Keywords: biosorption, cadmium, copper, biomass, spent zeolite. The majority of the industrial activities produce some kind of solid wastes. In this work two industrial residues (spent zeolite and wood sawdust) were chemically modified to increase their heavy metals sorption capacities. Manilkara longifolia (a Brazilian plant known as parajú) sawdust was first treated with NaOH and modified with different citric acid concentrations (0.6-1.2 mol/L) at 120°C, for 90 min. Infrared spectroscopy confirmed the presence of carboxylate groups in the wood structure as result of their mixing. Similarly, spent zeolites were also submitted to a chemical treatment (NaOH) to remove carbon deposited during oil cracking and to recover its sorption capacity. Batch experiments carried out at ambient temperature showed that both materials present sorption capacity for copper and cadmium comparable to weak acid ion exchange resins. A maximum of 78 mg-Cd/g and 59.7 mg-Cu/g as well as 29.9 mg-Cd/g and 14.6 mg-Cu/g were observed for the sawdust and the zeolite, respectively. The results were modeled according to the Freundlich and Langmuir equilibrium isotherms and compared with results of other studies.

Thallium is one of the rare metals that has come into commercial use within recent years . Its comparative scarcity , combined with a resemblance to the common metal lead , have retarded the development of uses for thallium . Although production is still measured in pounds rather than in tons , it is now finding application in a number of fields . Perhaps the earliest commercial use of thallium was as a constituent of optical glass of higher refractive power than similar glasses containing lead . One of the later applications to attract attention was the use of the oxysulphide in a sensitive electrical device similar to the selenium cell . The " Thalofide " cell , which was patented in 1919 , constituted for a time the most important outlet for thallium. During the next few years the limited use of thallium and its salts in other fields was insufficient to absorb an annual production of a few hundred pounds , and the price dropped from $ 16 or $18 per pound in 1922 to $ 5 per pound in 1924 . Beginning in 1925 several new uses were developed , especially as a poison for rodents and ants , and as a result the demand for thallium increased sufficiently to cause a recovery in price to the present level of from $12 to $15 per pound .

"This paper summarizes the Wren CAT (Clarifier and Accelerated Thickener) deep bed thickener operation at the EKATITM Diamond Mine in Canada’s Northwest Territories. EKATITMs’ thickener project is presented in terms of initial design considerations and present day operating practices. A circuit description summarizes process equipment, reagent systems, and typical process conditions, and details of Wren CAT operating principles are provided. Operating strategies are discussed, with emphasis on process instrumentation and control and operating challenges.INTRODUCTIONThe EKATITM diamond mine, operated by BHP Diamonds, Inc., is located in the Northwest Territories near Lac De Gras, approximately 300 km NNE of Yellowknife, NT. 9000 dry metric tonnes of diamond-bearing kimberlite ore are processed daily. Processing operations commenced in October, 1998.The EKATITM process plant flowsheet features typical steps in diamond recovery plant design. Figure 1 shows the general plant flowsheet. Size reduction and feed preparation are accomplished by crushing, scrubbing, and high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) through closed-circuit classification with vibratory screens. Heavy medium separation (HMS) is used as the initial stage of heavy mineral concentration. Secondary concentration is accomplished in the recovery plant by attrition milling; wet, high-intensity magnetic separation (both wet and dry); and X-ray sorting.The present budget throughput rate is 9000 dry tonnes per day. This will be increased to 18,000 tonnes during the first ten years of operation. Unlike most kimberlite treatment facilities, which process material from a single ore body, EKATITM’s process plant was designed to accommodate ore from five different kimberlite pipes, each with its own treatment characteristics.All processing, except for primary crushing, is carried out in a temperature-controlled environment in the main process plant building."

The feed of flotation unit in Angouran mine, as a part of Iranian Lead and Zinc National Corporation, contains about 34.26% zinc (about 12% Zn sulphide) and 10.14% lead (about 2% Pb sulphide). The grade of Pb and Zn in the final concentrate (rougher+scavenger), under optimal conditions (200 g/ton PEX, 500 g/ton zinc sulfate, 30 g/ton MIBC and pH = 7.5), was 63.18% and 13.01%, respectively, and the total Pb (sulphide-oxide) recovery was about 19% which included 95% Pb sulphide. The grade of Pb and Zn in rougher concentrate step was about 71.86% and 5.97%, respectively, when PEX (Potassium Ethyl Xanthate) was used as collector. While in the presence of PAX (Potassium Amyl Xanthate), the grade of Pb and Zn in rougher concentrate step was 66.8% and 10%, respectively. Tailing of the galena flotation (with 8.48% Pb grade and 34.92% Zn grade under the optimal conditions) was used as a feed for sphalerite and oxide section flotation.

Traditionally, the blast furnace (BF) has maintained a dominant position as the primary source of iron units. Notwithstanding the efficient nature of the process in respect of its material and energy consumption, the conventional blast furnace route is faced with limitations such as stringent quality metallurgical coke, high capital investment, etc. While BF will continue to retain its predominant position as the foremost ironmaking technology, the alternate processes may also have a role to play. Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) or sponge iron industry is all set to take a firm root in India as one important solution to the problems of shortage of metallurgical coal and ferrous scrap and high investment costs faced by the country's steel industry. The commercial proven DR processes coupled with electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking have also offered a viable alternative to the blast furnace - basic oxygen furnace (BF - BOF) route for the installation of integrated plants under specific local conditions. The performance and efficiency of DRI processes mainly depend upon the chemical and physical behaviour of the raw materials especially the iron bearing materials. Iron oxide pellet and sized lump ore constitute the oxide feed stock, while pellets form an ideal feed stock for direct reduction, use of lump ore is economically advantageous because of its lower price. National Mineral Development Corporation Limited (NMDC), being one of the major producer of iron ore in the country since last four decades, has established technology and developed process flowsheets for production of suitable calibrated lump ore for DRI production, besides supplying the natural lump ore for conventional blast furnace requirements. In addition to the above, extensive pilot plant tests have been carried out at the R&D Centre of NMDC for preparation of iron ore concentrates suitable both for direct reduction and blast furnace grade pellet feed using the iron ore fines from its own mines and as well as from the other iron ore mines in the country. For utilisation of the huge quantity of slimes generated in its ore processing plants, NMDC has planned to set up the first commercial plant adopting the smelt reduction process (ROMELT Process) for production of pig iron from Bailadila slimes. The paper mainly deals with various beneficiation techniques adopted for production of DRBF grade pellet feed from iron ore fines. Also presented in the paper, the extensive work carried out at R&D Centre on preparation and evaluation of calibrated lump ore (Natural Pellets), based on which, suitable modifications are incorporated in the ore processing plants of NMDC for production and supply of the same to sponge iron industries.

On-stream determination of xanthate concentrations can be made by photometric measurements at 313 nm.A simple double-beam instrument was developed for this purpose. A mercury lamp is used as the light source and a composite filter of UGll glass and chromate solution is used to isolate the required spectral region. The light beam is split into two components of approximately equal intensity. One component is passed through a reference cell containing water to a photo detector; the other component is passed through the xanthate solution to a second photo detector. The reference signal controls amplifier gain to eliminate effects of lamp intensity changes and the amplified sample signal can then be used to measure xanthate concentration.Plant trials showed that provided a clear solution free of air bubbles was obtained from an on-stream filter, the instrument indicated the xanthate concentration and operated satisfactorily for long periods.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Block caving is a distinct caving method applied mostly to large, massive, ore bodies because of its in¬herent low cost and high production capabilities. Areas of sufficient size are removed by undercutting so that the mass above will cave naturally. Drawing of the caved ore at the bottom of the ore column causes the caving action to continue upward until all of the ore above the undercut level is broken into sizes suitable for handling. When properly applied, block caving results in a lower mining cost per ton than any other under¬ground method. There are three distinct forms: (1) dividing the horizontal area into rectangular or preferably square or nearly square blocks, drawing evenly over the entire area to maintain an approximately horizontal plane of con¬tact between broken ore and caved capping; (2) divid¬ing the horizontal area into panels across the ore body, retreating by undercutting manageable areas from one end of the panel to the other and maintaining an in¬clined plane of contact between the broken ore and caved capping (thus the name panel caving); and (3) no division of horizontal area of the ore body into defi¬nite blocks or panels (this is termed mass caving). Undercutting may be from wall to wall, retreating from one end of the ore body to the other, maintaining an inclined plane of contact between the broken ore and caved capping. The total active caved area is deter¬mined by the size of block that will not produce undue stress on workings below the undercutting level and by total production requirements. This type of operation is also referred to as panel caving at some properties. SUITABLE ORE BODIES Block caving in its various forms is applicable to deposits of various shapes and ores of various strengths. Its success is governed by rigid requirements and limi¬tations. In unsuitable deposits or where improperly em¬ployed, the loss of ore may exceed that of any other mining method. Good planning, systematic work pro¬cedures, careful supervision, and good judgment con¬tribute to its success. Ore Characteristics Included as a necessary characteristic in an ore body suited to a successful block-caving operation is a proper fracture pattern. Ore hardness should be another gov¬erning factor, and the toughness or softness of the ore should be considered. There must be sufficient horizon¬tal area available for expansion of the undercut, if neces¬sary, to start the caving process. Large, massive, ore bodies usually meet these conditions. Veinlike deposits must be wide and dip rather steeply to conform to the block-caving limitations. The capping must be of such a nature as to cave when the underlying ore is being removed since the weight of the overburden aids in crushing the ore. The most favorable capping character¬istic is that it breaks into coarse pieces and resists attrition as the block is drawn. Soft capping, by breaking into fine pieces and sifting into the ore or channeling through the ore to the drawpoints, can seriously dilute the ore and hinder the extraction of clean ore from the blocks. Types of Ore In block caving, a fairly uniform distribution of val¬ues in the ore is necessary. Grade values may range from low grade to high grade, but most often the sys¬tem is applied to low-grade ores. Wide veins, thick beds, or massive deposits of homogeneous ore overlain by ground which will cave constitute suitable ore bodies. The ore must be such that it can be supported while blocks are being developed and undercut but breaks up readily when caved. Some applications include porphyry copper, disseminated molybdenite, hematite in the Lake Superior iron district, limonite deposits in northern Spain, the diamond mines of South Africa, asbestos and nickel in Canada, and massive magnetite in Pennsylvania. Size and Shape Outline of the ore body should be fairly regular, and the sides of the ore body should dip steeply. It may not be economical to mine small portions of ore extending into the walls of the deposit, and low-grade inclusions in the ore cannot be left unmined. Some dilution of the ore, as mining progresses, by low-grade or barren cap¬ping is inevitable and, unavoidably, some clean ore is left between drawpoints. Determining Cavability The use of rock mechanics is sometimes advantageous in helping to determine the cavability of an ore deposit. The US Bureau of Mines has information and testing ability which can assist in determining the cavability of ore types. Several competent consulting orga¬nizations knowledgeable in rock mechanics can also as¬sist in evaluating the cavability of an ore body. Some recent work has been done to better define the cavability index of various ore bodies; an example of how this was determined is discussed by McMahon and Kendrick (1969). The intensity of the fracture pattern is a critical parameter to be analyzed. The question to be answered is, "How intense must the fracture pattern be?" Table 1 is a tabulation of the size of rock fragments that appear at the drawpoint of various block-cave mines around the world. These are indicative of the fracture-pattern spac¬ing and, as can be seen, they vary substantially from the almost sandy material at the Mather mine to fairly sizable blocks at the Grace mine. Several sets of fractures are essential to promote good caving. Ideally, two vertical sets at nearly right angles to each other and a third set nearly horizontal are required to insure a good caving ore body. Aqueous oxidation is a possible alternative to roasting for the processing of gold bearing arsenopyrite (FeAsS) concentrates. The reaction has been studied by voltammetry and this has shown, for the first time, that FeAsS can be readily dissolved without passivation at room temperature in dilute sulphuric acid at relatively modest oxidation potentials (0.7 V SHE). The reaction forms sulphur on the mineral surface and the oxidant consumption is thus minimal. Two practical modes of slurry oxidation are listed.

The disasters between 1920 and 1979 in coal mines in Queensland and New South Wales due to underground fire, gas or coal dust explosion or to gas or coal outbursts, have been assessed. The evidence relating to disasters caused by gas explosion points strongly to divergence from safe mining practice as the main cause. There is a need for greater training and education of personnel, closer analysis of gas reports, better monitoring and testing procedures, improved ventilation standards and a policy where safe working practice is actively encouraged. Conditions in the New South Wales occurrences of gas explosion were similar to those at Collinsville, Queensland in that dykes, igneous sills, burnt out coal and faulting were common to all. Information on outbursts indicates that contributing factors were intrusions, depth of cover, fault zones and other geological disturbances, methods of work, pressure and type of gas.

In 1943, diamond drilling by the Bureau of Mines, comprising 11 holes which totaled 1,295.6 feet, showed that the pegmatite at Black Mountain consisted of shallow lenses in interbedded biotite-quartz-schist and impure quartzite. The average thickness of the pegmatite was 9.7 feet. Mineralization had a zonal arrangement. Beryl was most abundant near the footwall contact of the pegmatite. The average estimated beryl content of the pegmatite exposed at the surface was 0.81 percent, and the highest content of any pegmatite area was 1.75 percent. Other economic minerals were scrap mica, feldspar, spodumene, and lepidolite. Representative samples of the Black Mountain deposit failed to yield high-grade boryl concentrates by straight flotation owing to the presence of considerable spodumene. By employing heavy medium separation to remove the spodumene, 75.4 percent of the. BeO wan recovered in a flotation concentrate assaying 10.4 percent BeO.

Correias transportadoras de alta temperatura são ativos críticos para a pelotização devido ao prejuízo que sua falha pode trazer para a produção. Nesse sentido, deve-se avaliar a vida útil da correia em uso, visando, principalmente, auxiliar sua manutenção, e nesse contexto o presente trabalho tem como proposta utilizar a caracterização dos componentes e o estudo da degradação térmica do material da cobertura de correias transportadoras de alta temperatura. As caracterizações foram realizadas de modo comparativo entre três tipos distintos de correias transportadoras de alta temperatura fornecidas para a VALE S.A. Os reforços das correias foram caracterizados por FT-IR para análise qualitativa do polímero. De maneira semelhante, as borrachas foram caracterizadas por meio da análise do produto de pirólise via FT-IR e a densidade de ligações cruzadas por meio da técnica de inchamento do polímero e aplicação da equação de Flory-Rhener, o que ajudou a justificar o comportamento das diferentes marcas de correia perante a degradação térmica, estudada em um trabalho anterior. A partir desses resultados e utilizando dados de variação das propriedades mecânicas do material em função do tempo e temperatura de processo, pôde-se avaliar a taxa de dano causado a cada correia e, aplicando-se dados reais de processo, avaliou-se o desempenho das correias em trabalho.

"AbstractHigh strain dynamic pile tests (HSDPT) on driven piles have been carried out on a routine basis in Sweden for more than 30 years. The Swedish Commission on Pile research established, in the early 1980s, safety factors based on the percentage of piles tested. The safety factors could then be reduced, creating economic incentives for the contractor to carry out testing.Energy formulas adopted by our neighbour countries, Norway and Denmark, were not accepted in Sweden as a reliable method since the dynamic testing method was considered to be a more scientific and reliable method. It has become almost the only in-situ method used to verify geotechnical bearing capacity on driven piles.The typical Swedish geology of soft soils overlaying very hard strata makes it possible to verify high design loads, typically 20 kN per cm2 of pile cross sectional area for steel piles and 1,5 kN per cm2 for concrete piles.Conventionally a certain percentage of the piles have been tested in Sweden. The EC7, on the other hand states a number of piles to be tested, regardless of the total number of piles. The Swedish NA (National Annex) states a maximum distance between tested piles, which results in better distribution of the test piles over the foundation.For shaft-bearing piles in soft clays, dynamic pile tests have to be correlated by static load tests.Historical backgroundOn a research basis stress-wave measurements have been carried out for a long time in Sweden. One example is a project in the city of Gothenburg, conducted by Fellenius and Pejrud (1964). Strain gauges were glued on the reinforcement bars in 60 m long, precast concrete piles at 3 m and 25 m above the pile tip respectively. Evaluation was done with different methods such as dynamic formulas,stress-wave measurements and in addition compared with static load tests.In the 1975 Building Code in Sweden, driving criteria for concrete piles based on stress-wave theory were introduced, as summarized in Table 1. The driving criteria are intended for 3 and 4 tonne gravity hammers. For hydraulic rigs, which have free-falling hammers, the drop height indicated should be reduced to 80 % of the values in the table. The criteria were considered to include a safety factor of 3,0. For 330 - 450 kN pile load, pile with a standard a cross sectional area of 235 mm x 235 mm was used. For 600 kN load, the standard cross sectional area was 275 mm x 275 mm."

Lumwana is an open pit Copper mine located in the Northwestern Province of Zambia approximately 80 km west from the provincial capital of Solwezi, approximately 300 km northwest from the Copperbelt and 700 km northwest from the national capital of Lusaka. The mine has two major Copper deposits: Malundwe and Chimiwungo. Copper mineralization includes Chalcopyrite, Bornite and Chalcocite. In addition to Copper, these deposits also contain the undesirable element Uranium contained in vein hosted and disseminated Uranite. The processing plant was designed using conventional technologies: semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mill for grinding, and mechanical cells for rougher and cleaner flotation. Soon after commissioning in early 2009, it was recognised that two stages of conventional cleaning were unable to produce plant final Copper concentrates with the desired Uranium grades. Studies have shown that a significant quantity of liberated and fine Uranium particles (up to 80-90%) is recovered with the concentrate by entrainment. Lumwana Operations sought the use of the Jameson Cell technology after observing successful implementation at other sites in rectifying similar issues. In late 2009, Jameson Cell pilot-plant test work was conducted at the site and this quickly led to the installation of a full-scale B5400/18 model into the existing cleaner circuit. Inclusion of the Jameson Cell resulted in the plant being able to effectively produce clean and saleable concentrate with Uranium contents consistently below acceptable levels. Initially designed to be used as a cleaner scalper cell at the head of the existing conventional cell circuit, subsequent operational issues with the existing recleaner cells forced reconfiguration of the cleaner circuit and reintroduced the Jameson Cell for the recleaning duty. This paper reports the Lumwana Operation from the first two years of operation where it struggled to produce a saleable concentrate with Uranium grades below 150 ppm, which is the maximum allowable limit set out in the smelting contracts, to steps taken in the subsequent years to implement a satisfactory solution. The plant can now consistently produce a clean Copper concentrate with Uranium grades well below 130 ppm and the overall improvements implemented at site have seen the overall plant recovery improve by 1.3%.

Este cambio demanda mayores flexibilidades de los sistemas de información que deben ser totalmente abiertos, y permitir el intercambio instantáneo de información que facilite reaccionar oportunamente a las diferentes variables de la operación. Por ello, la colaboración electrónica permite a la minería adaptarse a un mundo que está cambiando.

Over the course of Dr. Robertson’s career, the ferrous and non-ferrous plants have seen enormous changes in technology and increases in plant capacity, essentially amounting to a “technological revolution”. In iron and steel, the “mega” blast furnace of some 6,000 m3 working volume is now standard (~10,000 tonnes (mt) of pig iron/day). Similar huge changes in process technology and plant size have occurred in the non-ferrous industry. As an example, the fuelfired reverberatory furnace, once the mainstay of the copper industry, has disappeared - replaced by large capacity flash and bath smelting technologies. The energy consumption per unit mass of metal produced has also been reduced considerably. Our understanding of the thermodynamics and mechanisms of metallurgical reactions, a field to which Dr. Robertson has significantly contributed, has made great strides. This paper reviews these changes with particular reference to the copper smelting industry, providing also comments on expected future trends.

This article describes two new concepts regarding the CFA (Auger Cast) piles. The first one, MALI Effect, is an approach to control the casting phase, while the second one, NETA Shear, is a technique which converts the drilling rig into a geo-mechanical tool. We look upon the system of the auger and the ground as a piston inside a cylinder. When concrete (grout) is pumped into that system, an up lift force is generated (We call that force MALI Effect). That up lift force reduces the needed tension in the pull up cable. By analyzing the tension force in the cable we detect the up lift force of the concrete. That pushup force is the product of the real concrete pressure at the bottom of the auger by the area of that bottom. As the area is known, the real pressure is accurately calculated. A control loop which is based on MALI Effect is very sensitive, precise, objective, reliable and easy to be used. All the process is based on pure real physical measurements. The system has no assumptions, no comparisons, no parameters, no zeroing and no adjustments. When we penetrate into the ground like a theoretical screw, for about a meter in depth, and then brake the main cable while rotating the auger, a set of forces generates. As the auger tends to keep penetration, but the cable holds it - a tension force develops (We call that force NETA Shear). Analysis of that tension force shows that it relates to the ultimate shearing capacity of the ground.

The Thabazimbi iron ore deposit comprises a series of stratabound orebodies, on average 18 - 25 m thick that are aligned along the faulted basal contact between the Penge Iron Formation and dolostones of the Malmani Subgroup, Transvaal Supergroup. Field geological relationships and petrographic observations suggest that the formation of high-grade iron ores took place after contact metamorphism related to the intrusion of the Bushveld Complex (2.06 Ga) but before the deposition of red beds of the Waterberg Group at ca 1.9 Ga. Hard, high-grade iron ores are predominantly composed of martite and microplaty hematite. Goethite is restricted to supergene-modified ores close to the Late Cretaceous û Early Cenozoic Old African land surface. At depth, the high-grade hematite ores interfinger with low-grade dolomite-hematite and calcite-hematite ores. Iron oxides (martite, microplaty hematite) present in these low-grade ores are texturally indistinguishable from those in the associated high-grade ores, ie ore formation is genetically associated with carbonate metasomatism. Microthermometric studies of fluid inclusions in sparitic carbonates and rare megaquartz reveal their hydrothermal origin. Two compositionally distinct aqueous fluids of shallow crustal origin are identified, namely a Ca-Na-rich high-salinity brine (26 wt per cent NaClequivalent, TH ~160¦C), and an aqueous Mg-K-bearing fluid of intermediate salinity (8.3 - 12.6 wt per cent NaClequivalent, TH~120 - 150¦C). The results confirm that high-grade hematite orebodies at the Thabazimbi deposit owe their origin to an event of extensive oxidative carbonate metasomatism (calcification), similar to that recognised at other important high-grade iron ore deposits in the world. Hydrothermal ore formation is both structurally and lithologically controlled. Size and quality of the orebodies was improved by Late Mesozoic-Cenozoic deep lateritic weathering as carbonate-hematite ores were enriched to friable high-grade ores, but this supergene modification is second in importance compared to the primary event of hydrothermal ore formation.

Ore from the Hill 50 Gold Mine, consists essentially of pyrrhotite, with minor amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and gold, replacing "jaspilite." The gold is associated with the sulphides as shotty particles. About 8 per cent. of the particles are less than '0.010'mm.The Hill 50 Gold Mine, at Boogardie in the Murchison goldfield, about 300 miles north-west of Kalgoorlie, was first operated in 1898. From 1898 to 1917 it yielded 20,000 short tons of ore for a recovery of 6,225' fine oz. gold, equivalent to a recovery grade of 6.22 dwt. gold per ton.The present company since the beginning of its operations in September 1936 to June 30, 1954, produced 811,081 short tons of ore for a recovery of 242,554 fine oz. of gold, equivalent to a recovery grade of 5.98 dwt. gold per ton.The grade of ore (recovery grade) has shown a remarkable variation with depth. From the 120 ft. Ievel to the 300 ft. level, it averaged about 7.5 dwt. Au per ton. Below the 300 ft. level it declined, and from 300 ft. to 400 ft. averaged 4.9 dwt. per ton, falling further with increasing depth to about 4.5 dwt. per ton at the '600 ft. level.On the 820 ft. level the grade improved sharply to about 14 dwt: per ton, and this grade has persisted down to and on the 1060 ft. level.The orebody has been described by Finucane (1953) as a series of lenses of finely banded jaspilite conformably enclosed by greenstones. The jaspilite is tightly folded and faulted and intruded by dykes of felspar porpnyry.Mineralization is practically restricted to the jaspilite.

You are a geologist, geometallurgist, or metallurgist/process engineer and are fortunate enough to work for an organisation who asks you to design/execute a geometallurgy program. What seems like a simple request is actually not a trivial exercise. æRecipeÆ style manuals are not readily available. Even though similar ore deposit styles (e.g. porphyry Cu, IOCG, Ni-laterites, calcrete hosted U, etc.) have many similar characteristics, each ore deposit is unique. Hence your geometallurgy program needs to be æfit-for-purposeÆ.
