Since Sept. 11, 2001, the author has been asked by several mining companies and mining publications to share some of his insights on how the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) and Pentagon might affect the mining industry globally. Until now, the author has been reluctant to express his thoughts in a publication that could possibly fall into the hands of terrorists and give them some ideas that they may not have been previously considering. However, the author discussed the contents of this article with several friends and acquaintances in the international intelligence community. They said that nothing commented on here is new to the terrorists. Potential terrorist targets Sources within the worldwide intelligence gathering community have told the author that current intelligence data indicates that it is likely that the Islamic fundamentalist groups responsible for the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001will likely be directing their effort at foreign business entities. Any overseas or any domestic businesses of highly visible companies that are part of the anti-terrorism alliance should consider themselves a potential target.

The purpose of the panel's examination of coal mining research and development is to explore how the various groups that make up this research community might work together more efficiently and be more productive. The community, as defined here, includes federal and state governments, coal producers, manufacturers, unions, universities, and industry sponsored research organizations. The framework chosen for these discussions consists of brief presentations by the panel members on their views of the proper role and function of the group they represent. The panel members were also asked to highlight the economic, technical and institutional constraints that affect the performance of research and development and the use of the results. Following these presentations, a number of prepared questions will be discussed by the panel, and audience participation is invited. These questions were given several weeks ago to the panel members for their study. Before proceeding with the panel member reports, a brief review of the importance of R&D to the coal mining industry would be helpful to setting the stage for a constructive dialogue. It is appropriate to begin this review by mentioning that there is complete agreement among the research community that the major goals are: Improve health and safety Protect the environment Increase capital and labor productivity Increase resource recovery Since the basic functions of the academic, industrial and government sectors are different, we should expect that the research and development objectives and priorities, roles and responsibilities under each major goal will be different for each research group. The differences do not represent problem areas. However, problems will arise if the objectives are not properly interfaced at the appropriate time. The consequences of railing to understand the need for integrated programs will be the classic result, best described by the phrase --"a technical success but a commercial failure."

"Ecstall Mining Limited was formed to operate the Kidd Creek mine, discovered by Texasgulf Incorporated in 1961 the orebody is geologically very complex, containing rich values of zinc, copper, silver and lead. The first phase of the operation involved an open pit, railroad and concentrator complex, which was under construction in 1965 and began operations in late 1966. The open pit, with rim dimensions of 2,000 by 1,000 feet, was computer-designed and highlights excellent wall control and efficient ore extraction and grade control. The railroad was built over the worst type of muskeg country, but it has been well maintained, resulting in an uninterrupted supply of ore in the trains. The 10,000-tpd concentrator, located 17 miles from the mine, is highly instrumented and automated. It features computer control of reagents and, in addition to the copper, zinc and lead flotation circuits, has a modern gravity tin plant. The concentrator is large, because very fine grinding is required for good metallurgy and nearly 2,500 tons per day of concentrates are produced. In 1969, work was started on the underground mine to take over from the open pit; it began partial production in mid-1973. The mine is highly instrumented, has a ramp from surface, a high-production shaft, an underground gyratory crusher and an efficient orehandling system, and employs the latest mining techniques. The electrolytic zine plant, rated at 120,000 tons of slab zinc per year, started operation in April, 1972, with batch leaching and purification circuits. It has been converted to continuous leaching and is now in the process of converting to continuous purification. Further modernization and automation will be carried out in the next few years. Five service departments support the five operating departments. These are maintenance, engineering and technical services, geology, administration and employee relations. How these ten departments function and work together using the most advanced technology to produce an efficient operation is the main theme of the Ecstall Story."

CANMET-MMSL, in cooperation with Dry Systems Technologies and Quinsam Mine, conducted a study to determine the effects of B50 biodiesel on the emissions of a flameproof diesel power package in comparison with mining diesel fuel for application in underground coal mines. The emissions testing for coal mine application requires that the intake air mixture to the engine should be at 1.25 percent methane by volume in air. The tested power package system included a naturally aspirated, mechanically-controlled diesel engine with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a heat exchanger, flame arresters, and a low temperature disposable diesel particulate filter. The engine dynamometer tests were conducted at the CANMET-MMSL Diesel Emissions Research Laboratory in Ottawa using the ISO 8178-C1 test protocol. The separate and combined effects of a B50 biodiesel blended fuel, and with and without 1.25% methane enriched intake air were measured on a diesel power package. Fuelling the baseline engine (without methane), with B50 biodiesel blend reduced carbon monoxide (CO) by 44%, and increased nitrogen dioxide (NO2) by 19%, and particulate matter by 31% relative to the mining diesel fuel. Similarly, injection of 1.25% methane to the intake air for baseline engine with mining diesel fuel increased engine power by 15%, CO by 124%, and NO by 15%, and decreased NO2 by 13%. The effect of B50 biodiesel relative to the mining diesel for coal mines application (with methane for both fuels) was to reduce CO by 27%, and NO by 6%, and increase NO2 by 23%, with no change in engine power. The overall results indicate that the minimum ventilation rate for the equipment application in coal mines with B50 biodiesel was 4.11 m3/s (8,700 cfm), slightly higher than the ventilation rate of 4.01 m3/s (8,500 cfm) with the mining diesel fuel. This slight increase in ventilation rate for B50 biodiesel fuel was due to an increase in NO2 at one of the operating test points, and the ventilation rate for this equipment was governed by NO2 in the exhaust gas.

The matte/slag tidal zone in a nickel-copper-iron-sulphide matte smelting furnace is subject to severe process conditions that can lead to premature failure of the lining. The MgO-FeO-SiO2 slag is aggressive to refractory bricks, while the Ni-Cu-Fe-S matte is aggressive to water-cooled copper cooling elements, and can penetrate and sulphidize refractory bricks. A novel approach to the lining design was taken at a PGM smelting furnace, where an indirectly-cooled graphite ring was applied in the matte/slag tidal zone, with refractory bricks on the hot face. The graphite was cooled by the copper cooling elements in the slag zone, obviating the need for copper cooling elements in the tidal zone. In this paper the effectiveness of different lining designs utilizing varying degrees of cooling in the slag zone and slag/matte tidal zones is compared. In comparison to water-cooled copper in various configurations, cooled graphite shows promise as an indirect refractory cooling system in the tidal zone area of furnaces. This paper intends to introduce the development of copper smelting and converting technologies in China in recent years, with a particular emphasis on the introduction of various continuous converting technologies, and moreover, it analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of those technologies, including their impact on the downstream anode refining from different points of view. INTRODUCTION At present, many converting technologies are used in copper pyro-metallurgical plants in China, including Peirce-Smith (PS) converter, flash converting furnace, multi-lance based top blowing, bottom blowing and so on. These technologies have spanned a wide range of time. PS converter technology has been applied in copper smelters for many years and most of the blister copper have been produced by this technology; flash converting technology has been developed since 1990s and been maturely applied in several plants up until now; top blowing and bottom blowing technologies have been revived in China in the past decade and boast good environmental protection performance, energy efficiency, throughput capacity and short process flow. All of the said technologies have reference operations in treating high-grade matte. As more and more attention is paid to environmental protection globally and copper smelters continuously seek for cost reduction, it is necessary to share those converting technologies, especially those new converting technologies derived in China, with copper smelting practitioners in the world. This paper aims to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of various technologies from a macroscopic view and discuss their actual application effects, current developments and future improvements. BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF VARIOUS CONVERTING TECHNOLOGIES IN CHINA China has seen a rapid development in copper smelting industry in the past 30 years and has become the largest gathering place of copper smelters in the world, most of which are operating with PS converting furnace technology, however, with the increasingly strict environmental requirements of the Chinese government in recent years, the low-level pollution issue and the disadvantage of large gas exhaust amount per unit of copper of converting furnaces are particularly prominent.

The microstructures and kinetics of a rich iron ore ( TFe = 65.84%) of Na Rua mine, Vietnam, used for the iron production were investigated in this study. Thermal behaviors of iron ores were well-examined by heating microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential thermal analysis. After being pelletized and then oxidatively fired at 500–1200 °C for 2 h, the pellets fired at 1200 °C (P1200) displayed a hard and dense structure with a decent compressive strength of 317.9 kg/pellet whereas those fired at 500 °C (P500) had a soft and spongy structure. The reduction of iron pellets conducted in a flow of a 60–100% CO2/ Ar gas mixture at 900–1100 °C showed significantly higher efficiency than the reduction using coal. The spongy pellets showed superior performance for the reduction in the CO/Ar gas mixture compared to the dense ones, compatible with the production of sponge iron. When mixed with an amount of coal, P1200 designed for iron production in the blast furnace demonstrated an impressive reduction activity compared to P500 and previous studies. The kinetics of pellet reduction was determined by the diffusion of substances through the solid product layers having the mathematical model of 1 − 2 3 f − (1 − f )2∕3 = kt . The microstructures of pellets during the oxidative firing and reduction were also examined by X-ray diffractometry; scanning electronic microscopy; energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy; and Brunauer, Emmet, and Teller method.

Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant that produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment the ore.An issue affecting production in 2011 was the stability of the E48 mine. A small portion of the drives on the extraction level began to deteriorate as the ground support system failed. The problem was temporarily fixed by stopping production in three extraction drives and tight filling selected areas within these drives (and drawpoints) with low-strength concrete. This action provided immediate support and stability whilst allowing time to investigate potential ground support remedies. From these investigations it was decided to use resin injection technology and additional ground support to stabilise the rock in the aforementioned extraction drives as the concrete plug was excavated in a controlled advance and sequence. This made the area safe and ensured the ongoing safe operation of the E48 mine. The redevelopment of one of these drives began late in 2011, with the remainder being progressively redeveloped over the next two years in order to maintain the extraction level stability.This paper looks at the strategies employed to safely re-open previously converged drawpoints and associated extraction drives that were subject to high abutment loading that was possibly associated with premature cave breakthrough.CITATION:Samosir, J and Snyman, L A, 2014. "The kaolin deposits of Aiken County, South Carolina (fig. 1), have been worked continuously since 1852. It has been long known that the deposits contain a high percentage of alumina and that large reserves exist. These facts led to the early selection of this area for examination in the search by the Bureau of Mines for high-alumina clays. An exploratory program was started by the Bureau, and drilling was carried on from June 27, 1942, to October 31, 1942.The kaolin-bearing district occupies an area approximately 25 miles long and 11 miles wide, running northeast, with its center at Aiken, S. C. (fig. 1). Within this district, a triangular area bounded by Horse Creek, Silver Bluff Road, and Hamburg Road was roughly prospected by boring 43 machine and 12 hand holes. As a result of the data obtained, a final smaller area was chosen for more systematic prospecting. This area is bounded by Pine Log, Tewkesbury, Silver Bluff, and Craig Sawmill Roads and covers about 4,000 acres.Mineral exploration agreements covering 11,272 acres were signed by 35 property owners, and 11,956 feet was drilled in 200 holes on these properties.The Bureau of Mines exploration work in the district has indicated 19,514,000 short tons of kaolin, of which approximately 10,000,000 tons would average over 35 percent alumina.The tonnages and grades of kaolin developed by this exploration are tabulated below.All grades of this kaolin average approximately 2 percent Fe203 and 1.5 percent Ti02.This project was under the general supervision of J. R. Thoenen, supervising engineer, Non-Metals Mining Section of the Mining Division, Bureau of Mines, until July 1942. The -project was then under the general supervision of E. J. Lintner and later Rowe McCrae, consecutively district engineers for Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida. The final report was prepared, under the general supervision of V..J. Lynch, chief, Raleigh Branch, Mining Division, by William A. Keywords: Undercooling, Convection, Dendrites, Stainless Steel, Levitation Certain Fe-Cr-Ni stainless steel alloys solidify from an undercooled melt by a two-step process in which the metastable ferrite phase forms first followed by the stable austenite phase. Recent experiments have shown that the lifetime of the metastable phase is strongly influenced by flow within the molten sample. The current research will provide insight to why flow affects the metastable phase. This new understanding will lead to the use of convection to control microstructural evolution in spray-forming of stainless steels. Simulations using a commercial computational fluid dynamics package, FIDAP, yield a range of convective flow velocities that cause mechanical damage to the dendrites which is compared to experimental results. If the convective velocities are great enough that the dendrites bend, then low angle boundaries form at the points of collision. These result in high energy sites that could serve as nuclei for the stable phase.

Since 1988, there have been thirteen documented incidents in the United States and Canada in which carbon monoxide (CO) is suspected to have migrated through near surface strata into structures or other enclosed spaces as a result of nearby trench blasting or surface mine blasting. From these incidents, there are thirty suspected or medically verified CO poisonings and one fatality associated with these incidents. To better understand the variables contributing to this hazard, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) carried out a small- scale field study to identify key factors that may contribute to the migration of CO through the ground. NIOSH conducted single- hole heavily confined experimental test shots to measure the radial pressure pulse as it propagated through surrounding monitoring holes to determine if a relationship existed between the pressure pulse and resulting CO measurements afterwards. NIOSH also monitored blasts at an airport construction site. Following the detonations, the concentrations of CO, nitric oxide (NO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were monitored for several days in the surrounding satellite holes. The peak CO measurements relative to distances from the shots were compared. Pressure histories and peak particle velocities (PPV) were measured at monitoring boreholes. It was found that the differential pressures recorded within the boreholes give some indication as to the likelihood of CO appearing, whereas the PPV measurements do not seem to be as good an indicator for potential CO migration. In this limited study, changes in barometric pressure had very little influence on removing the trapped detonation products, whereas applying a vacuum to the monitoring holes was effective in reducing the entrapped CO concentration.

Safety is the No. 1 concern of any drill contractor or mine operator. Everyone in the industry knows a safe site helps stabilize operational costs and enables higher productivity. When it comes to exploration drilling, research has proven a majority of injuries are caused by the mishandling of coring rods. A driller helper will typically handle up to 50 rods per shift or up to 15,000 rods per year. With an annual 340 t (750,000 lb) in rods managed by hand, the risk of serious injury is extremely high. "Introduction.During the past two years the Bureau of Mines has conducted a study of natural-gas heaters*** to determine (1) what types of heaters literate carbon monoxide; (2) why carton monocide is liberated; and (3) how, by change of design or construction, the liberation of this gas can be largely eliminated, In addition to the above study the bureau has investigated cases in the Pittsburgh dis¬trict where fatalities have resulted from carbon monoxide given off by natural-gas heaters.Since these fatalities were first brought to the attention of this bureau through the press, it is likely that some cases were missed and thus not listed. On the other hand, some cases reported as being due to carbon monoxide poisoning, on investigation were found to be due to causes other than carbon monoride.The cases listed herein were shown in all probability to be due to carbon monoxide. Those in which there is any doubt have been omitted; so have those in which there was part asphyxiation, where the victims later recovered."

The shift of mining activities to increasingly more diverse locations places the industry in conflict with local residents over land use and water access. In Perú, there have been significant rises in mining community conflicts with few long term resolutions being apparent. This paper examines the role of culture in these conflicts and suggests that progress maybe able to be made should deliberative engagement occur. Also, that mining conflicts are inevitable and that Peru’s cultural heritage, while contributing to the distance between parties is also the basis from which to start of a process of resolution, should both sides wish to gain the appropriate skills for a more deliberative approach.

"Abstract A seven storey Northbridge area of Perth, Western Australia presented residential apartment complex located in the an opportunity for a novel application of Cutter Soil Mix technology (CSM). The development included a two-level basement for car parking which covered the full site area. However, the basement was also required to extend under an existing single story heritage building. Soil conditions comprised 2m of fill overlying medium dense to dense sands that in turn were overlying a very stiff clay stratum at approximately 14-16m depth. The ground water table was located at a depth of approximately 1m below the natural surface level.A site boundary consisting of a reinforced CSM retention system and was designed and installed to allow the excavation to proceed to basement level. Two rows of temporary soils anchors or inclined struts were required to achieve this. A CSM support system for the heritage building was also designed and constructed to provide temporary support during excavation and permanent construction works. The brief for the contract works emphasised that it was vital that settlements of the heritage building be kept within strict limits.CSM is a relatively new introduction to the Australian construction market, using a modified trench cutter to mix a binder slurry with in situ soils, generally to form cut-off walls, retaining walls and soil improvement works. This project is understood to be first application of the CSM for underpinning work in Australia.This paper discusses the site background details leading to the decision by the client to adopt CSM technology, and the design and construction aspects to meet the challenges offered by this project.Introduction190 Newcastle St is a 7-level residential apartment complex located in the Northbridge area of Perth, Western Australia. The development includes a 2 level basement for car parking, which covers the full site area. The basement also extends under a single story heritage building, which remained in-situ throughout the building works.A site boundary retention system was required to allow the excavation to basement level to proceed. In addition, a support system for the heritage building was required to provide temporary support during excavation and permanent construction works."

The $980m (€750m) Dublin Port Tunnel, Europe’s biggest urban highway tunnel project, was opened in December 2006. The culmination of this immense scheme is set to transform the environment, mobility and road safety of Ireland’s capital city. This paper summarizes the key aspects of a project linking both sequential and parallel construction of individual tunnels and describes various approaches to bored, mined and pre-support cut-and-cover tunneling in a wide variety of ground types and depth of cover. Examples of innovative approaches to deal with structural and geotechnical problems while maintaining full operation of both road and rail traffic and the integrity of properties in a dense urban corridor are described.

A continuous pilot-scale test of the GranuFlow Process was conducted using a screen- bowl centrifuge for the dewatering and reconstitution of column flotation concentrate at a coal preparation plant in Virginia. In this test, a slipstream of the fine-clean-coal slurry from the column flotation concentrate was treated with a bitumen emulsion before dewatering. The treated products from the screen-bowl centrifuge appeared to be dry and in a free-flowing granular form, while the untreated products were wet, sticky, and difficult to handle. Specifically, test results indicated that the average moisture contents of the dewatered coal were 35.7, 35.5, 32.6, 29.9, and 26.5 wt% with Orimulsion additions of 0,0.7,3.2,4.8, and 6.4 wt%, respectively. The handleability and dust reduction of the dewatered coal product were also vastly improved.

"Since milling began in 1912, the Dome mill, now part of the Porcupine Joint Venture (PJV), has been expanded several times, the most recent increasing the milling rate from 3,500 to 11,500 tonnes per day. Dome uses conventional crushing and grinding followed by gravity concentration to recover free milling gold. A cyanidation/CIP process recovers the remaining gold in the gravity tails.Over the past few years, continuous gravity improvements have increased the gravity recovery from 20% to nearly 50% of the plant feed gold. This paper describes some of the factors that have contributed to this dramatic increase, and suggests how gravity recovery can be further improved. Gravity circuit availability has been improved to >98% with the implementation of a preventative maintenance program. More Knelson concentrators have been added to the circuit, and in 2002, an Acacia Intensive Leach Reactor was installed to replace the shaking table. In 2003, the entire gravity circuit was audited to evaluate and quantify the circuit performance. The metallurgical and mechanical operating conditions of the gravity circuit are now well understood, and areas for further improvement are well defined.INTRODUCTIONThe Porcupine Joint Venture was formed in 2002 between Placer Dome Inc. and Kinross Gold Corporation. One of the goals of the JV was to use the milling capacity of the Dome mill to process ore from Placer Dome and Kinross mines in the Timmins Camp. The PJV Dome Mill utilizes gravity concentration, cyanide leaching and carbon in pulp gold circuits to recover gold. Gravity recovery has been used in some form at the Dome Mill for most of its existence, first using conventional jigs, these being replaced in 1993 by two Knelson Concentrators, one for each of the two grinding circuits in the Dome mill. Over the years more concentrators have been added to improve the gravity recovery, most recently in 2002 for a current total of five. Also in 2002, an Acacia Intensive Leach Reactor was added to process the Knelson concentrate, replacing the shaking table."
