This paper describes the acquisition, exploration, development, initial operation and subsequent financing of the Bulawan mine by means of a listing on the Toronto Stock Exchange of a subsidiary of the parent company, Philex Mining Corporation.Located on the island of Negros in the Philippines the property is unique on at least two counts: it is a disseminated gold deposit that occurs in a region of predominantly porphyry copper mineralisation; and it is a gold deposit that is mined by a bulk method of extraction (front and block cave) instead of the normal selective mining methods.

"Current methods for acid rock drainage (ARD) mitigation revolve around insulation of the waste from oxygen in the atmosphere with water and dry (soils and liners) covers. Both are of limited effectiveness and present significant drawbacks. Furthermore, while they reduce oxygen influx, they reduce but do not prevent ARD.The inert gas mixture (IGM) technology has been designed to overcome the deficiencies of gas transfer into tailings and waste rock materials across the surface and instead block oxidation by controlling the transfer of oxygen from the atmosphere. Inert gas is injected into the mine waste at low flow rates and the positive but low flow purges the oxygen that tends to diffuse into the sulfide waste across the surface. The positive flow of IGM compensates for inward oxygen diffusion and creates a pressure drop across the cover layer preventing inward diffusion of oxygen and, hence, acid generation.The IGM processes are evaluated in this paper: theoretically, with a review of the theory of ARD and the current state of knowledge about the performance of notably dry covers as atmospheric oxygen barriers via models to predict the performance of the IGM technique practically, with a bench-scaled experiment.The results demonstrate the effectiveness of IGM to prevent oxidation of sulfide minerals and ARD in waste rock. The laboratory experiments further identified key variables to be used to monitor performance and control efficiency of IGM, which is now awaiting field-scale application.The IGM technology is a patented process by Terraquest Technologies Ltd (Canada) in USA, Canada and Australia. The IGM technology can be cost-effectively manufactured on-site with commercially available compressors and gas filtration membranes. The paper outlines the 17 Mt/a Telfer Project plant process design from sample selection to feasibility study design. The 366 Mt Telfer mine reserve consists of a diverse range of copper and gold mineralisation, from massive sulfide reef ores to stockwork ore, oxide copper minerals to chalcopyrite, siltstone to competent quartzite, all with relatively high levels of gravity recoverable gold. The complexity of the orebody demanded a flexible plant that could recover copper and gold values by a combination of gravity recovery, flotation and concentrate leaching. The demands of treating ore from a high grade underground mine and a variable grade open pit (that includes underground old mine workings) necessitated a dual train approach from primary crushing to concentrate production in order to minimise the requirement for campaigning of different ore types. An extensive sampling, testwork and technical evaluation program was undertaken to identify processing characteristics and the optimum process route for each ore type. The design experience included: the development of robust primary stockpiling and pebble crushing concepts; detailed review of scale-up of SAG and ball mill pilot plant data to plant scale; the selection of two 15 MW SAG mills and two 13 MW ball mills for the grinding circuit; and detailed modelling of the pyrite concentrate carbon-in-leach (CIL)/sulfidisation acidification recovery thickening (SART)/acidification volatilisation recovery (AVR) process to optimise design for copper and cyanide recovery from leach liquors. The Telfer plant design also measures the development of process design based on experiences at the Cadia Hill Cu/Au concentrator, commissioned in 1998. The differences between the two plants are compared and contrasted.

Most iron ores occur in mine benches as complex mixtures of lithologies and ore types. This significantly complicates their characterisation for both blast design and fragmentation modelling. A great deal of technical and research effort has been applied to the development of models to predict fragmentation from rock blasting. A number of quite useful engineering models are currently available to blasting engineers and consultants, and more sophisticated approaches using mechanistic descriptions of rock breakage continue to be developed and applied by researchers and explosives companies.The engineering or empirical models that are in more general use within the industry, such as the Kuz-Ram model, require appropriate data if they are to generate useful fragmentation predictions. Some of these models have reached significant sophistication and have made very useful contributions to both routine blasting operations and the exploration of new blasting paradigms. However, these models struggle to adequately deal with rock that is as complex as iron ore. This paper reviews the characteristics of the most successful blast fragmentation models available to the industry and discusses approaches to the derivation of suitable rock mass properties to adequately describe blast fragmentation in a range of iron ores.CITATION:Scott, A and Onederra, I, 2015. In this paper we describe the leaching characteristics of pure gold in thiosulfate solutions that contain a known chelator; meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA). The interfacial and chemical characterisation of the system was accomplished using both electrochemical methods and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis after pure gold samples were exposed to solutions composed of 65 mM Na2S2O3, 1 mM NaOH and a range of DMSA concentrations. In the absence of DMSA, cyclic voltammetry revealed the onset of thiosulfate mediated gold dissolution, the degree of which was reduced at more positive potentials due to the formation of oxidised thiosulfate products on the gold surface. The addition of small amounts of DMSA (<10 ¦M) to the electrolyte resulted in minor changes to the voltammograms indicating a subtle interaction of the additive with the gold surface that may improve leaching. However, at higher concentrations of DMSA (up to 100 ¦M), electrochemical evidence suggests the formation of new oxidation products in solution as well as the formation of more compact monolayers of DMSA on the surface, which contribute to partial repassivation of the surface. The influence of DMSA on thiosulfate leaching of pure gold electrodes at the open circuit potential for a period of 90 minutes was tested and the corresponding gold leaching performance evaluated with ICP-MS analysis. Our data shows that small amounts of DMSA (1 ¦M) doubled the amount of total gold in solution when compared to the same study in the absence of the additive. However, higher concentrations (5 ¦M DMSA) reduced the overall amount of dissolved gold. These results may point to a mechanism where small amounts of DMSA improve leaching by adsorbing onto the surface in a highly defective monolayer that partially blocks or disrupts the formation of passivation products caused by thiosulfate oxidation, but excess DMSA can limit the leaching process itself by forming too coherent a monolayer on the gold surface.CITATION:Uceda, M, Choi, Y, Shepherd, J L and Guerra, E, 2013. With the theme of û æUnderground Ore Handling SystemÆ, Kopanang Mine completed an extensive project on a specific system with technologies for the handling of ore from a dedicated drawpoint to the shaft system. The intended rail haulage tramming system had to be capable of handling the shaft design and Life of Mine (LOM) requirements. Kopanang is an AngloGold Ashanti gold mine situated in the province of the Free State in South Africa. In the Sotho language the name æKopanangÆ means to come together as a team. ItÆs an appropriate name given that 25 companies worked on this project. The future focus at Kopanang is to establish four mining levels between 3 to 4 km south-west of the shaft and two mining levels to the west. The mine has an expected life of almost 20 years and capital was approved in order to access this reserve to establish the infrastructure to handle the ore, hence this exclusive rail haulage tramming system of close to R40 million (SA rands), which took three years to construct. Apart from the fact that this system had to be capable of handling 6500 t per shift at a depth of over 2 km over a length of 3.2 km, some of the major considering factors were: safety, economic factors with improved labour productivity, efficiency and reliability, risk termination, and ergonomics. The system comprises two 20 t locomotives operating in a double header configuration from a dedicated draw point to a dedicated tip area for the reef and waste ore. With the objective of handling high speed and high capacity, this 200 t payload train is capable of running at 35 km/h powered from a 500 volt ac overhead line. Each loco consists of two 90 kW dc motors with ac/dc power conversion on the locomotive. For the system to operate at this speed, the rail system is constructed with Class 1 rails over the entire hauling distance. The tipping mechanism is unique and the span of 11 hoppers each with a load of close to 20 t is capable of tipping the pay load of 200 t in about 20 seconds hands free.

Raise caving is a novel cave mining method, which has been proposed for mass mining at increasing mining depths in LKAB operations. The method makes use of the raise mining technology and an active stress management approach. For the implementation the method is split into two phases, namely a de-stressing phase and a production phase. In the de-stressing phase, a slot-pillar system is established. The purpose of slots is to provide stress shadows and the purpose of the large pillars is to control stress and seismicity. The production phase follows after the de-stressing phase. Required infrastructure in the production phase is developed delayed in stress shadows and bulk extraction takes place in de-stressed zones. Eventually the pillars crush and they are extracted in the production phase. A comprehensive research and development program has been launched to develop the raise caving method towards implementation. As part of this program a full-scale test site of raise caving will be conducted as well as raise caving operations are planned for depth extensions in LKAB mines. This paper discusses the design of raise caving operations in practice at the LKAB mines. In particular, the purpose of the paper is to focus on requirements for the development and design of a raise caving operation. The development of raise caving is discussed from a systems engineering perspective as well as from a management perspective. The functional requirements in the destressing and production phase are outlined and discussed in the paper. The discussion is on basis of the main elements of the raise caving system, such as slots, stopes, pillars and infrastructure. Critical rock engineering design requirements in the de-stressing and production phase are highlighted and dependencies between individual main elements are identified. The analyses show that pillars are especially important for the success of the mining method. Overall, the analyses show that raise caving is a complex system and that its development demands a multidisciplinary approach.

Air quality is a big topic of discussion in regional mining communities as well as urban environments situated close to port terminals handling bulk solids. Community perception of poor air quality can significantly affect the reputation of the mining operation and handling facilities. Dust monitoring for regulatory compliance relies on using a handful of accurate but very expensive sensors, usually situated at the boundary, relatively far from the activities that generate the airborne dust. These reference monitors measure dust leaving the site but dust mitigation and management on-site largely relies on operator judgement. At a fraction of the cost, small wireless solar powered units can be used to supplement reference monitors in real-time. Due to their compact nature, portability and low price, these units can be implemented on a mass scale to increase spatial resolution of dust measurements and, more importantly, in much closer proximity to both the dust generating activity and the sources of dust. This can provide valuable insights into the origins and timing of dust generation thus producing datadriven decision-making while minimising subjectivity. Similarly, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is another supplemental technology that can be used to increase the spatial resolution of dust measurements in near real-time, however, the cost of commercial systems even exceeds that of regulatory monitors. LiDAR also presents difficulties in quantifying dust plume concentrations. This study presents learnings of implementing both technologies for dust emissions management. Several low-cost sensor units and a fast-scanning custom-built 3D LiDAR system operating at a range of 1.5 km with a resolution of 1.5 m were deployed on a surface mine to monitor dust emissions from different activities. The project explores the use of real-time sensor data to quantify LiDAR measurements in parallel with integration into mine planning. The approach can assist in prioritising dust mitigation activities thereby reducing instances of emissions exceedance and minimising water use through databased and targeted application. Demonstrated is an opportunity for a step-change in industry best practice as well as commercialisation and operationalisation of the method across different industries, including future mineral extraction.

The Intec Copper Process is an environmentally advantageous hydrometallurgical process for the production of high purity copper and associated precious metals from copper sulphide concentrates. The process uses a mixed chloride-bromide lixiviant in an elegant cyclic circuit to leach the copper into solution, rejecting the iron as stable hematite rather than as unstable jarosite. After purification of the pregnant liquor, copper is electrowon at London Metal Exchange Grade A purity, while the anodic energy of the cell is stored as the soluble species, HalexTM, for recycle as the regenerated lixiviant to the leach circuit. Both gold and silver are leached and recovered directly from this cyclic process without resorting to cyanide leaching of the residue. No liquid emissions result from the Intec Copper Process, whilst spent air and water vapour from the leach are released to the atmosphere. The sulphur in the minerals reports to the solids residue in elemental form, without the need for expensive handling of voluminous gaseous sulphur dioxide streams found in smelters. A significant difference to competing smelting and hydrometallurgical processes is that any mercury entering the process from the sulphide concentrate feed is recovered rather than reporting directly to waste or polluting the environment. Outside the process circuit itself, the Intec Copper Process has several notable environmental advantages over competing technologies: Flexibility of scale with low capital and operating costs allow operation directly at the mill head at production rates as low as 15 000 tpa, significantly reducing environmental impacts from concentrates transport. The ability to handle low-grade and dirty concentrates often allows greater recoveries in the mill, improving both the economics and environmental acceptability of a mine by reducing metal losses to tailings. A comparison of the total energy requirements of the Intec Copper Process with those of competing technologies shows that the Intec Copper Process has the lowest energy consumption of any of the known hydrometallurgical processes, as well as improving upon pyrometallurgy under appropriate conditions.

Production mine geology must be accurate and efficient in order to reduce risk and ensure that ore value and mining operation revenue are maximised. Present grade control practices are commonly based on outmoded and inaccurate 2D geological mapping techniques where spatial relationships are estimated by eye, sketched by hand and projected to arbitrary reference planes. The 3D mapping approach outlined in this paper integrates 3D photogrammetric imagery with implicit modelling techniques to enable more accurate grade control and reconciliation in underground mines. High-resolution stereo photographs are taken of daily ore development headings. Ore contacts are traced directly on a 2D face photo using a stylus and rugged tablet. Area-weighted face grades are estimated and calculated on mapped 2D face planes. In the office, a 3D photorealistic mesh is processed and georeferenced. 2D face mapping data is transformed into its actual 3D location and true 3D mine mapping is performed by digitising oriented 3D polylines representing ore contacts and other geological features directly onto the image surface. Three-dimensional spatial relationships are fixed, eliminating the projection error of traditional 2D methods. Ore envelope and waste solids are modelled within the closed, drift-round mesh. Volume-weighted ore envelope and round grades, as well as round volume and tonnage, are calculated. Ore/waste classifications, grade, tonnage and per cent dilution are quantified per round, visually assessed in 3D and reconciled with short- and long-term models on a daily basis. Updated geological continuity models provide geological guidance in development headings under geological control and accurate 3D structural and form-line mapping improves definition drilling and stope planning. Three-dimensional imagery provides a permanent detailed survey and geological record of mine workings that can be revisited virtually to reinterpret geological ore controls in light of new observations and insights. In addition images can be used to monitor daily production performance, create training scenarios for miners, engineers and geologists and prepare management presentations. This approach adds value to underground mines by improving the accuracy and efficiency of mine geology practices. In recent years there have been many changes in mine ownership due to the on-going rationalisation towards larger mining companies. Larger companies inevitably find it hard to manage small mining operations and in many cases smaller mines do not fit corporate resource, production and profit criteria. Smaller companies are more suited to managing these medium or small scale mines and are tendering for the purchase or lease of mines that larger companies wish to dispose of. In addition to these factors there has also been a trend (especially in Western Australia) for mines to continue operating at ever increasing depths. This in turn has led to more mines operating in high stress environments and experiencing damaging seismicity. Assessing the viability of seismically active mines from a takeover or purchase point of view should involve analysing the risk profile of every aspect on mining that could be affected by adverse seismicity. This includes assessing current and alternative mining methods, mine designs, support systems, extraction sequencing, monitoring and blasting. This paper includes discussion on items that need to be assessed when considering the purchase of seismically active mines, with experience gained from some recent studies in Western Australia. In these cases it was apparent that quantification of previous seismic history on itÆs own was a totally inadequate method of assessing minewide seismic risk potential. A more holistic approach is required, taking into account all aspects of relevant data, all the minewide effects of seismic activity and all possible means of mitigating those effects.

WMC has mined the Perseverance disseminated orebody exclusively by SLC (sublevel cave) methods. Deteriorating ground conditions in the vicinity of an orebody inflection forced a re-evaluation of future mining at Perseverance and a strategy to drop down below the inflection zone and recommence the cave was implemented. This strategy has led to increased production at higher grades, resulting in lower costs and better mill recoveries. This paper describes the evolution of mine planning, development, support and production strategies through the successful process of implementing the ædrop-downÆ and re-establishing the SLC.

Centennial Coal operates the Springvale and Angus Place longwall mining operations that extract coal beneath the Newnes Plateau in the Western Coalfields of New South Wales. Springvale and Angus Place mines have a history of difficult geotechnical conditions, where mining operations are conducted with a thick coal roof interbedded with numerous claystone units and relatively high levels of vertical and horizontal stress. The combination of a relatively high stress regime and weak laminated roof has led to numerous roof failures throughout the mine’s life.Following underground roadway development, the mine roadways can experience high levels of roof movement that can lead to roof falls. Two-point wire extensometers (known as ‘telltales’) are extensively used for roadway condition monitoring. Along with extensive other geological and geotechnical data, monitoring data is used to prepare geotechnical hazard plans that are then used in all areas of mine planning to allow for safe and efficient operation of the mine.This paper presents a case study of the use of a new software tool that allows time-scaled visualisation of monitoring data in the context of longwall and development face positions and installed strata support. It can be used in the identification of geotechnical risk factors and their interaction with the mining process to allow a more robust geotechnical hazard process. The aim of this paper is to discuss how to form work and organisations in the mines of the future. The Kiruna underground iron ore mine in the far north of Sweden is used as an example on how technical development affects organisational issues like skills, work identity and gender. Over a period of 50 years one can see a transformation of work from manual underground work to automation and remote control from surface level. What characterised the old underground workface was the close relation between man and the hard rock and with arduous physical work under dangerous conditions. Today, the face miners are located on the seventh level of an office building close to the mine. There is also an emerging, and in many aspects already evident, knowledge transformation û from the old and obsolete physical and tacit knowledge and skills (for example the ability to æread the rockÆ) to something new, which can be described as abstract æhigh-techÆ knowledge and skills. The modern technology has created a new type of work û new in terms of competencies and knowledge as well as workload and organisation. At the same time the mining company are recruiting more women and promoting the former pure male work as attractive workplaces for both women and men. All this has effects on how individuals and company create and recreate skills, identity and gender. To some extent the technological development predestines these changes, but there are some choices to be done when forming good work and organisations for the mines of the future. The traditional mining workplace culture and behaviours and the old type of masculinity, the æmachoÆ style, will be challenged by the new æhigh-techÆ work and new competency demands. The changes risk meeting restoring responses, which can have negative impact on the performance of the organisation, for example making it inflexible and perhaps ælaggingÆ behind the technological development. These questions need to be handled when planning future mining.

Valuers of mineral properties should be aware that accountants are a major user of their opinions of value. Reliance by accountants can range from obtaining comfort that book values in balance sheets are not overstated to establishing values by which to assess the fairness of a takeover offer. Accountants using mineral property valuations clearly can't be expected to have the same level of expertise as the valuer and ""second guess"" the valuation. But they do have an obligation, under the ASC guidelines and their own professional standards, to'check the logic and reasonableness of the valuation before being able to rely on it. This means reviewing the valuation report for general sensibility, discussing the methodologies and assumptions with the valuer and being satisfied as to his competence and independence. This paper outlines how accountants use mineral property valuations, the level of scrutiny applied to such valuations and the problems commonly encountered in practice by accountants seeking to rely on them. The paper also explains how values of-mineral properties are established in company balance sheets and why these often differ, quite validly, from fair market values.

Python Underground Processing Plant Critical Design The use of continuous gravity recovery in combination with a controlled breakage fine crushing and screening system followed by flash flotation has been incorporated into the Python processing plant. This provides miners with a flexible, robust, low cost, low energy pre-concentration process for the recovery of gold and/or heavy minerals. The Python plant incorporates fine crushing utilizing either High Pressure Grinding Rolls or Vertical Shaft Impactors in combination with the InLine Pressure Jig and Flash Flotation to continuously liberate and recover the valuable minerals. The use of these technologies has enabled a narrow, transportable pre-concentration plant to be produced which can easily be installed and operated in underground drifts and tunnels.

Fire suppression systems are now recognised by both NFPA 502 and PIARC as legitimate tools for both life protection and asset protection. The effectiveness of these tools for life protection demands extremely rapid and accurate incident detection coupled with rapid response. This rapid response must be integrated with other emergency systems such as emergency ventilation. The March 2007 fatal Burnley Tunnel incident in Australia graphically illustrates the potential of effectively integrated fixed suppression systems to protect people from harm and save infrastructure from damage. Despite the raft of technology available in that instance to the operator it was the human operatorÆs ability to effectively control the emergency equipment and not the equipment itself which so positively influenced the threat to life and property.

The massive 1100 Orebody in Mount IsaÆs X41 Copper Mine has been extracted over the last 40 years form north to south utilising sublevel open stoping methods.De velopment has continually stepped ahead of production to provide access to new primary stoping blocks. The remaining secondary pillars contain stopes with one, two or three fill mass exposures and were constrained by access requirements and stope extraction turnaround time.The remaining southern mining areas consist of large 40 m wide by 300 to 400 m long east-west transverse pillars that have been left to provide access for ventilation and service requirements. Three large transverse cross-cuts or transverse pillars û 4180 x/c, 4010 x/c and the Panel pillar now remain. The 4180 x/c was the last major transverse pillar to be successfully broken.This transverse pillar is being extracted in a retreating sequence, creating 3SLOS stopes due to the surrounding backfilled stopes.In recent years the extraction of the first, and most critical, stopes in the transverse pillars have resulted in large changes to the induced stress field. This paper describes the extraction of the 1.1 million tonne stope P418 in the 4180 x/c pillar.T echnical challenges that were faced and how they were overcome to allow for the successful extraction of the stope are described.Critical to the success of the P418 stope extraction were the rehabilitation methodology used; extraction strategy modifications to address deteriorating ground; mass firings with multiple directional changes; managing the exposure of backfill of variable strengths; and geotechnical monitoring prior to, during and after extraction.

In many mineral processing operations, the reported production figures for an accounting period may not make the best use of available data. While most of the mathematical approaches, such as check-in/check-out, mass balancing, used in effective metallurgical accounting strategies are well understood, the sources and magnitude of measurement errors generally are not. As part of the æAMIRA P754-Metal Accounting and ReconciliationÆ project, a study was undertaken at the Northparkes copper/gold concentrator near Parkes, New South Wales to examine the data used in their concentrator metallurgical accounting system. This paper summarises the results of a detailed examination of the mass measurement systems around the concentrator as well as the primary sampling system used for grade estimation. The goal of this work was to develop practical techniques to quantify the error (ie both accuracy and precision) of the measured metal accounting information. With this information, statistical confidence levels for this data can then be calculated. If the errors are small, the effect of error in each piece of measured data can then be propagated to other calculated production figures such as recovery and feed grade using a statistical technique called æthe propagation of errorÆ.

The mining industry is faced with imperatives to improve worker safety and productivity, adapt to skills shortages, high worker turnover rates, and provide more effective maintenance to new and ever more complicated plant and equipment. While more effective use of data combined with advanced analytics offers opportunities for improvement, providing this information to the worker in the field, in real-time, has proven expensive, cumbersome and ineffective. New capabilities are now emerging which address some of the limitations experienced to date. Augmented reality (AR) provides a means to overlay interactive digital information on top of the physical world. Combining the latest visual display, mobile computing and ‘track and trace’ technologies, AR provides an experience similar to a heads-up display in a fighter jet through small, personnel devices, such as smart phones or wearable glasses. Applying AR would allow a mobile worker to ‘see’ all relevant information for a given task, in the context of their physical environment and at the time they require it. The technologies behind AR are rapidly maturing and becoming available at a price point that is viable for commercial applications. It is anticipated that AR will become ubiquitous at a consumer level within the next five years. The specific challenges faced by the mining industry make it an ideal early adopter of AR technologies. This paper examines a number of use-cases of how AR can be applied to the mining industry and the benefits that can be realised. The paper will identify areas of further work and viable opportunities for immediate adoption within the industry.
