The Monterey Coal Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Carter Oil Company of Houston, Texas, recently awarded a contract to build the Monterey No. 1 Preparation Plant, which will be located near Carlinville, Illinois, to the McNally Pittsburg Manufacturing Corporation. The preparation plant will be one of the most modern jig preparation plants in the State of Illinois. Illinois No. 6 coal will be delivered by a 48" slope belt having 35-degree carrying idlers, operating at 650 FPM and operating on an incline of nearly 17 degrees. The slope belt is driven by two 450 BP motors and will deliver the mined coal at the rate of 1800 TPH to a stationary step-type ' screen having six-inch openings. The overproduct from the stationary screen will discharge into a 10' x 24' McNally Rotary Breaker and the underproduct will bypass the rotary breaker. The rotary breaker is equipped with heavy manganese screens with 6 ½" diameter openings. The sized 6" x 0 coal from the stationary step screen and the rotary breaker will be discharged by gravity to a 4%" raw coal incline storage belt. The 48" raw coal storage belt will deliver the 6" x 0 sized coal at the rate of 1800 T?H to an 8000 ton concrete raw coal silo, 70 feet in diameter and 1x7 feet high. The 6" x 0 sized coal will be drawn from the concrete storage silo by seven (7) 36" wide reciprocating plate feeders. Five feeders are to have constant speed drives at a rated capacity of 145 TPH each. Two (2) feeders will have remote con- trolled variable speed drives, to provide a varying feed.

Since 1950, rotary-drilled, large-diameter holes, "big holes", with depths to over 300 feet and diameters of over 30 inches have become numerous and widespread. Fifty such holes have been drilled for access shafts to LPG mined caverns, Over 70 holes have been drilled for various other commercial activities. Over 150 holes have been drilled by the AEC for atomic testing purposes. These holes have ranged up to 300-inch diameters with 1600-foot depths, 120-inch diameters with 570-foot depths, and 72-inch diameters with 4800-foot depths. Equipment is now available to drill a wide range of ?big holes? for varied requirements. At least a dozen drilling contractors are participating or have participated in the drilling of "big holes". The accompanying tables show pertinent historical, technical and economic data on over 250 holes. The illustrations to be presented concurrently with this paper show the various equipment and accessories now in use. (See Appendix I for captions of illustrations.)

The Riverside Badlands Tunnel segment of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California’s Inland Feeder Project, was lined with a segmented concrete primary lining and a welded steel final lining with the annulus filled with Low-Density Cellular Concrete (really a grout). The paper describes a numerical modeling technique that was developed to determine safe grout placement procedures to avoid pipe flotation, and shows the relationship between flotation and the rheology of the liquid grout. Design details of the steel liners are often not well suited to grout placement, and recommendations are given on how to improve this.

The South Lake Union Pipelines contract for King County Wastewater Treatment Division and Seattle Public Utilities in Seattle, Washington included three 1.8 m (72-in)inside diameter microtunneled pipeline segments totaling about 793 m (2,600 lf).Tunnel alignments were within street right-of-way of heavily traveled urban roadways. Project challenges recognized in the design included: high groundwater levels; contaminated soil and groundwater; variable soil conditions, including fill; and timber piles and other obstructions remaining from historic land uses. The tunnels were built using a Lovat MTS Microtunneling machine, beginning in spring 2003. Conditions encountered during construction presented additional challenges beyond those anticipated in the design process, and were successfully addressed by the owners, designer, and construction management consultant all working with the contractor. Problems included highly variable soil conditions, cracking of reinforced concrete pipe joints during pipe jacking, a timber pile trestle uncovered during shaft construction, and obstructions encountered in the second and third microtunnel runs.

Traditional methods of creating a water tight shaft liner involve the use of segmented or welded steel. When shafts are located in ground that exhibits extremely difficult conditions of high water inflow and hydraulic pressure, composite liners are often combined with ground freezing during construction. The authors were searching for a cost effective and more flexible solution to hydrostatic liners design than the traditional concrete/steel composite design used so far. Searching through new technologies developed for tunneling applications, sprayed on membranes systems seemed very promising but were not developed for the specific circumstances encountered in shaft sinking applications where ground freezing is involved. Even though freezing is a very effective technique, it creates adverse temperature conditions for the application of spray on membranes. In addition, application and hydrating cure times for those membranes products ranged between six to twenty-four hours under ideal conditions (usually temperatures well above freezing point), which eliminated them from consideration in a shaft sinking cycle. While researching different spray on membrane materials, it was discovered that Stirling Lloyd Polychem Ltd. has developed and proven a different membrane material for waterproofing liners in different tunneling applications. The characteristics of the membrane exceeds the pressure parameters encountered in frozen shaft sinking operations, and the chemical cure times were reduced to one hour per layer which worked well into the shaft sinking cycle times. More over their system included a quality control procedure that allowed insuring integrity of the membrane at application time, a very desirable feature for shaft liner construction. However, the frozen rock surface still presented an unknown in the cure time and stability equation. As all membrane products a shotcrete substrate is usually required prior to application. The hypothesis used by the author was to use this shotcrete layer, not only as a substrate, but also as a thermal insulation against the frozen rock and the membrane during both application and curing time. The authors knew from experience that shotcrete could be applied successfully over frozen rock. But the shotcrete temperature curve over time was unknown and no information were found in the available literature. Testing was required to determine whether a suitable mix of shotcrete could be applied to the frozen shaft wall to provide enough heat of hydration for a suitable period of time to create conditions suitable for membrane application and curing.

Introduction There is a misconception that mineral-project economic evaluations in the former Soviet Union are either nonexistent or very limited. This is not the case. In fact, there are at least two basic methods that can be utilized to evaluate the vast mineral resources of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Evaluation procedures are based either on a comparison to known projects, which may rely on limited available data, or on potential-profit calculations, which generally uses more extensive databases. Significant philosophical differences between these systems and those utilized in the Western world include the following: •Under the centralized-government system, the economic evaluation of a mineral project was based on artificially determined mineral prices and costs. Every ten to 12 years, prices for concentrates and metals were established by the Council of Ministers and remained unchanged until the next reconsideration of prices . •The time value of invested money was not considered to be important under these "stable" prices, and inflation was assumed to be nonexistent in the planned economy. •An overestimation of the value of social and economic factors such as keeping the local population employed and providing the country with strategic minerals biased the economic evaluations of projects. Sequence of exploration Geological exploration in the CIS countries typically includes two major phases: prospecting and exploration. Prospecting consists of the following: •Regional geological studies. •General prospecting. •Prospecting. •Prospect evaluation. Regional geological studies are conducted within large territories and utilize satellite images, deep seismic zoning and other state-of-the-art methods. Geological and geophysical maps on a scale of from 1:200000 to 1:1000000 are developed to help identify regional anomalies and mineral prospective areas. The areas of primary interest are then subjected to general prospecting, beginning with geological mapping of the area at 1:50000 (1:25000) scale. The prospecting phase determines mineral potential based on further geological mapping (mostly 1:10000 scale), surface geophysics and geochemistry. Finally, the most attractive targets are subjected to further detailed evaluation (prospect evaluation) to help identify "possible" projects by means of trenching and wide-spaced drilling. The results of the prospect evaluation are analyzed and conclusions regarding the economical potential of the project are drawn. If the initial-prospecting phase results are positive and the prospect is recognized as economical, it then moves into preliminary exploration, which is followed by detailed exploration. Preliminary exploration determines the feasibility of the project on the basis of limited data. For example, in some underground projects, the initial exploration drilling and tunneling is done at two or three times wider spacing than would be required by the assumed mining method. Detailed exploration focuses on preparing the project for mining development, such as completing drilling and tunneling, particularly in the portion of the ore body to be first mined. During the project's mining phase, further exploration is usually conducted along the flanks of the mineralized structures and deeper sections of the ore body. Finally, during exploitation, it is sometimes necessary to delineate the ore body within the mining-block limits. A comparison between the United States (US) sequence of exploration activities and the CIS system is given in the Table 1. There is no "additional" and "exploitation" exploration shown in the US system, but it is common knowledge that all mineral projects are subjected to "additional" and "exploitation" exploration while being mined. The Blue Ridge Low Level Outlet (LLO) was a design/build contract to provide a secondary means of discharging water from the Blue Ridge Reservoir. The project involved driving a 3.25 m (11 ft) modified horseshoe tunnel by 293.5 m (963 ft) long utilizing conventional drill and blast methodology. The intake shaft and structure were constructed inside of a sheet pile cofferdam surrounded by a maximum of 20.1 m (66 ft) of water. The shaft was excavated 4.87 m(16 ft) diameter to a depth of 12.8 m (42 ft) below the tremie slab elevation. Steel lining, including a transition from 3.66 m to 2.74 m (12 to 9 ft) diameter and a90 degree elbow were installed in the inlet shaft and then backfilled with concrete. This paper will describe the RFP phase, the design phase, challenges of the underground construction and contractual challenges.

Introduction As ore grades decline and deposit depths increase, problems and costs of mining construction increase rapidly. Ground water greatly impacts the cost of mining construction. In developing or exploiting ore bodies or coal mines, stored ground water in waterbearing formations is often encountered. Man-made conduits or shafts are constructed, as are raise bores for ventilation (up to 6-m-diam or 20-ft-diam), or smaller diameter drill holes, used for either power cables or rock dust. In underground construction and mining, it is possible to inherit unmapped and abandoned drill holes either from oil or gas exploration, or from previous geological investigations. There also exists within underground work exposure to faults, fissures, and jointing. A mine development may encounter unknown aquifers or, unluckily, have an ore body that is an aquifer. Water may invade an existing underground structure, due to concrete deterioration or to damage that may occur to an existing shaft or tunnel concrete lining. An underground development may intersect a drill hole that was not properly grouted when abandoned. It subsequently formed a conduit or an active path to conduct water into the mine. Water inflow may range from insignificant to a magnitude sufficient to inundate an area or an entire underground development. Corrosion imposes major costs. In shafts, it can cause accelerated wear and deterioration, and subsequent early replacement of hoisting ropes. It can also cause deterioration, misalignment, and subsequent accelerated wear and replacement of timber and steel guides and buntons. Utility maintenance (power cables, air, water, and ventilation lines) also can become a problem. Corrosion imposes major costs. Skips and skiploaders provide a never-ending series of maintenance headaches when exposed to an ingress of water. Numerous problems are found in declines with invert and rail maintenance and with partitions in over-under coal mine slopes. Ground water interacting with an underground ventilation system can result in: • Increased ventilation resistance due to roof falls and the spalling of ribs caused by ice heaving. • Restriction in shaft or slope cross-sectional area due to ice buildup during winter months. This may be a safety hazard to access as well. • An increase in the moisture content entering the ventilation air that condenses underground and causes electrical and equipment maintenance problems. Underground structures also incur water-caused problems. The concrete lining in shafts, slopes, and tunnels may be subject to: • Active mine waters causing concrete and reinforcing steel to deteriorate - perhaps to the point of collapse. • Load redistribution around a concrete lining, caused by soil dislocation due to water movement. The resulting stress may be in excess of the calculated design loading. Backwall injection with grout of the completed concrete lining may solve these water inflow problems through low-pressure injections of cement and chemicals. This fills voids at the interface of the concrete lining with either the soil or rock excavation. Surface structures may be jeopardized by lowering the ground water table, resulting in surface settlements. Surface settlements can occur in buildings, headframes, hoist foundations, mills, conveyor structures, or in rail haulage. Areas of differential settlement can lead to derailments, improper wear of hoisting ropes on sheaves in headframes, and the misalignment of bearings and brakes. Mud jacking and compaction grouting may remedy these problems. To reduce operating costs, increase efficiency, and increase safety, inflow water to the mine should be minimized. For an operating mine with a water problem, a water inflow survey should be taken. Quantities of water flow should be examined at all accesses (shafts, slopes, bore holes, and raise bores) at the faces, haulages (rails or conveyors), and sump discharge. The paper describes a technique by which large concrete boxes are unobtrusively inserted beneath existing highway and railway infrastructure to form new subways, culverts and under-bridges, thus avoiding the inconvenience and costs of disruption to traffic associated with traditional cut and cover techniques. A series of project examples, undertaken in the United Kingdom and United States, are used to illustrate the design and construction of the box structures, together with the technology required to control ground disturbance in the tunnel face and around the box, and the jacking systems necessary for box installation.

The Nonel Primadet is a non-electric blasting initiation device. The system incorporates the safety advantages of a cap and fuse system with the precision blasting afforded by electrical blasting caps. Each unit is made up of a delay blasting cap factory-crimped to a Nonel® shock tube lead line. The delay elements in the blasting caps are manufactured in both millisecond and long period series. There are 16 periods available in both series - period 0 through period 15. The units are manufactured in 12', 16', and 20' lead lengths. The hollow shock tube is made of surlyn plastic and it is coated on the inside with a reactive material. The powder train has a density of only 1/10 grain per linear foot of tube. A typical blast round is timed precisely the same way it would be with electrical caps. After the round has been timed and loaded, the tube leads are gathered in convenient bunches and tied into a detonating cord trunkline. The Nonel® tube bunches are initiated by the output of an 18 grain per foot detonating cord trunkline. Once initiated, the Nonel® shock tube will reliably propagate at 1800 meters per second. The energy from this shock front initiates the delay elements in each delay cap. The shock tube is inert to electrical energies, including; stray current from AC/DC power sources, as well as, electrostatic discharges. The tube is also inert to initiation by impact. The system has proven to be particularly advantageous in both tunnel and shaft blasting applications. The major advantages in using the Nonel® system in this type of work are: 1) faster and easier tie-in techniques through the use of bunch-blasting. 2) electrical power can be left on during loading and tying-in. a. electrical lights can be turned on at the working face - better lighting facilitates loading and tying-in. b. electrical pumps can continue to function throughout loading and priming procedures (this is particularly advantageous in shaft work with water problems). 3) down-time due to approaching electrical storms is minimized. 4) increased overall efficiency in the blasting cycle: a. it is easier to train a man in the proper use of the system. b. fewer missed holes per round. c. less time required for tie-in. 5) safety-advantage--The system is not susceptible to involuntary initiation from extraneous electrical energies.

Introduction Operation is underway at the Dutch Creek No. 1 mine of the first US longwall panel to be mined under the cooperative agreement between the US Bu¬reau of Mines and Mid-Continent Resources. The 244-m (800-ft) wide longwall face is part of a multilift longwall demonstration. A 3-m (10-ft) top slice is being extracted from the 8.5-m (28-ft) coal seam. This occurs in an area of the property where the Coal Basin A and Coal Basin B beds have come together to form one seam. This face, longest ever operated in the US, is being worked on an advancing longwall system. During the first months of its operation, this longwall face has been very productive and safe. Mid-Continent Resources operates two coal mines in the Coal Basin, located in the White River National Forest near Carbondale, CO. The Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. originally opened this property in 1895, and conducted a small mining operation for 10 years on the north rim of the basin and then abruptly shut down. Mid-Continent began operations in 1956, after the Coal Basin fields had lain idle for about 60 years. Operations commenced at the outcrop of the Coal Basin B bed situated at the 3-km (10,000-ft) elevation. At this time, coal was produced from Coal Basin A and Coal Basin B seams in the area. Since 1981, operations have been centralized at two mines, the Dutch Creek No. 1 and the Dutch Creek No. 2, both located in the center of the basin. Since 1981, Mid-Continent has shifted its emphasis to longwall mining as the primary method of production, and each of these mines is equipped with state-of-the-art longwalls using shields as the method of roof support. A 4-km (13,000-ft) long twin-bore rock tunnel is being driven at a lower elevation of 2.4 km (8,000 ft) to intersect the coal seams at depth, as they dip 12° in a westerly direction. This tunnel will enable the company to reduce costs by replacing trucks with conveyor belt haulage (Fig. 1). Mid-Continent began longwall operations in May 1976 with the US's first modern, mechanized advancing longwall face, using chocks. In August 1978, a second advancing longwall face was started. Results from two faces showed that the mining system could be used effectively to manage the difficult conditions encountered in both the Dutch Creek No. 1 and the L. S. Wood No. 3 mines. Unfortunately, low productivity and high costs plagued the company's advancing faces. The problems resulted principally from major equipment failures, poorly designed chocks and face conveyors, and the lack of an efficient, cost effective system for building packwalls. Flushing of rock between chocks and roof control were also major problems. In Sept. 1979, Mid-Continent and the US Bureau of Mines entered into a cooperative agreement to demonstrate the feasibility of mining thick coal seams using the multilift longwall mining method. Two lifts are to be used to mine the 8.5-m (28-ft) thick coal seam in Dutch Creek No. 1 mine. The Bureau provided mining equipment for 180 m (600 ft) of longwall face. This included the shields, face conveyor and drive units, shearing machines, panel belt, and stageloader. As a result of previous experience in advancing longwall mining, Mid-Continent purchased an additional 60 m (200 ft) of face, including roof supports and an additional face conveyor. Current extensions of the European railway network require long TBM drives in the diameter range of 10 m under critical and varying rock conditions. In view of that and in particular for a 7 km long high-speed railway tunnel in Spain to be started in mid-2003 a new design for a hard rock Double Shield TBM has been developed by SELI (Italy) and Jäger (Austria) in collaboration with Mitsubishi (Japan)and Robbins (USA). Due to the new design and operational features that new type of TBM has been named Universal Double Shield TBM with a further extended area of application. Special attention has been given to outstanding torque and thrust capacities combined with the shortest possible length of an innovative shield arrangement, different advance modes in various ground conditions and further developed exploration and treatment facilities.

Introduction Fracture mechanics is the study of the behavior of cracks and their modes of propagation. During cracking, energy is consumed in creating new surface area. The more energy a material absorbs, the higher is its fracture resistance. This fracture energy is provided either by work done externally, by the release of elastic strain energy within the cracked body, or by a combination of these two effects. Fracture resistance is measured in terms of either the stress intensity factor, K, or the energy release rate (also referred to as crack driving force), G. For linearly elastic materials, these two quantities are related by the following equation: [ ] where [u] is Poisson's ratio and E is the modulus of elasticity. Both K and G are direct functions of the applied force and the crack length. The process of rock cutting with full-face tunnel boring machines (TBMs) involves the indentation of a rock surface by rolling disc tools. Excavation occurs as fractures, extending from the locus of chip indentation, propagate between concentric disc grooves and liberate rock chips from the intact rock face. Since disc cutting is achieved by a fracture process, it is logical to anticipate that differences in cuttability of a variety of rocks should be related to the variation of fracture material properties among the rocks. Such a relation has been demonstrated between the performance of full-face TBMs and the critical crack driving force for excavation in relatively high strength, brittle, low porosity, isotropic rock (Nelson et al., 1985). The objective of this paper is to report on the results of a continued investigation of the relationship between fracture material properties and the effectiveness of disc cutting. Additional reliable data on full-face TBM performance is difficult to obtain, so that the results of disc linear cutter tests performed by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) (U.K.) are utilized in this study. Fracture Material Property Evaluation If a crack tip is subjected to a perfectly plain strain condition, many materials will behave in a brittle manner, and the material resistance to fracture is constant during crack growth. This resistance is referred to as the plain strain fracture toughness, believed to be a material property. The standard testing procedure for this parameter is given in the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) test designation E399. To ensure plain strain conditions, acceptable specimen geometries are specified. Unless these geometric specifications are adhered to, the measured fracture resistance is regarded as the apparent fracture toughness, and a subscript Q is used, as [ ]. The methodology adopted by ASTM E399 is within the framework of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM). This approach assumes that material resistance against cracking is developed instantaneously, without initial stable or subcritical crack extension. Prior to crack advancement in rock, however, much of the crack driving energy is absorbed in a localized volume in front of the crack tip, referred to as the plasticity or microcracking zone. This capability for energy absorption substantially increases material resistance, and a crack may be arrested unless an increased crack driving force is applied. The LEFM or plain strain assumptions would underestimate the actual fracture resistance of such a material. Such a conservative approximation may be desirable in the design of structures against fatigue or brittle failure. In mining or tunneling, however, an underestimation of crack resistance can lead to the selection of underrated excavation equipment and a decrease in production efficiency. The development of fracture resistance in rock is best described by the material resistance curve, or R-curve, which is a plot of fracture resistance as a function of crack extension. Typically, peak resistance is only reached after a finite amount of subcritical crack growth. The

The Manapouri Power Station is an underground hydro-electric station located in the South Island of New Zealand, and was constructed in the 1960s. Between 1997and 2002, a second 10m diameter tailrace tunnel was constructed to increase the out-put and to improve the overall hydraulic efficiency and output of the station. A critical economic and project approval consideration for the second tunnel was the outage time required for the breakthrough into the power station. The power station is in part dedicated to providing power to an aluminum smelter with the balance to the National Grid, and apart from the physical problems associated with providing an alter-native power supply to the smelter, the loss of generation revenue and supply risk were significant issues. Innovative planning reduced the planned outage time from several months to21 days, and the breakthrough was eventually achieved in 11 days as a result of additional value engineering measures implemented during construction. This paper describes the engineering optimization that took place during the planning stages of the project and later during construction, as well as describing the construction methodology used.

In underground construction and mining work, situations occasionally occur where hard rock or concrete must be excavated at locations near critical structures or utilities. Fearing damage from blasting, contractors and engineers often explore the viability of using mechanical methods or expansive concrete to facilitate the excavation work. However, for moderate to large excavations, the prolonged duration and high cost of using these methods is often impractical. In these situations, under the right conditions, controlled blasting and blast-management methods can be used to speedup the work and lessen costs. The process of determining whether or not blasting is practical is often complex, particularly when risks are high. In this paper, general methods of conducting blasting risk evaluations and outlined and considerations for blast design and risk management are reviewed. This paper also includes three blasting case histories demonstrating how these techniques were used at recent projects. In the first case, a cautious blasting program was developed to facilitate the removal of concrete and rock within a large section of an active mineshaft. The second case involved critical blasting to excavate a dry lake-tap connection between a tunnel and a shaft at the Southern Nevada Water Intake No. 2 project in Henderson, Nevada. The third case history describes how novel blasting methods were used to carefully drop a 2,721,500-kg (6,000,000-lb) concrete caisson into a1.2-m (4-ft) rock socket at the Detroit Outfall No. 2 project in Detroit, MI.

INTRODUCTION The rapidity of onset, rate of increase, and magni¬tude of loads in an underground support system can be measured using load cells or pressure cells, whichever is appropriate to the type of support. These instruments should be installed at the various instrumented station locations immediately after excavation. If the loading of a member is of interest, the load should be measured, whereas if the deflection or strain of a member is of interest, the strain should be mea¬sured. It makes as little sense to use a load cell to allow computation of strain as it does to measure the strain and then back calculate the load. Tunnel steel set de¬signers today invariably rely on the early work of Karl Terzaghi, the basis for which is load, so load measure¬ment should be the main concern. The current trend of using strain gages on steel sup¬port systems stems from the inability by some to eval¬uate unusual loading conditions caused by uneven block¬ing. In fact, uneven blocking will obscure almost any attempt (whether with load cells or strain gages) to properly evaluate support performance. The load curve in Fig. I shows the development of a characteristic early peak load sometimes called the "rear abutment load" seen in many underground open¬ings. It is thought that the peak reflects the coupling of the rock and the support system, and that the magnitude will increase until some yielding, or minor failure, of the support system occurs. At that time, the slight deforma¬tion of the support system promotes the formation of minute shears in the opening walls, and these shears tend to distribute stress between the support system and the adjacent rock in proportion to the relative rigidity of the support elements and the rock. In normal rock, as a result of this stress redistribu¬tion, subsequent load magnitudes generally do not reach the magnitude of the early peak load. In physically unstable (squeezing) or chemically un¬stable (swelling) rock, however, the loads experienced after passage of the early peak load may in fact show a slow, continuous increase. One of the very important purposes of load instrumentation is to provide the means for recognizing such long-term adverse trends, thus enabling the proper remedial steps to be taken. Another purpose of load instrumentation is to pro¬vide a comparison between the magnitudes of the early peak load and the subsequent stable load. The ratio of these two loads is analogous to a safety factor, and may be used to evaluate the efficiency and economy of the support system design. Aside from considerations of economy, it may be well to design support systems which do not have excessively high ratios of early peak load to subsequent stable load. Should these ratios be exces¬sively high, the support system may be so rigid that the yield or failure associated with stress redistribution may occur with explosive violence. Load cells for use in mines, tunnels, and on con¬struction projects come in many forms. Almost all, however, employ the same procedures for installation, readout, etc. Therefore the following comments are almost universal in application. LOAD CELL INSTALLATION Load cells should be installed with bases parallel to the surfaces against which they bear. Care must be taken to orient the cells so that their signal cables are protected from accidental damage as a result of con¬struction, maintenance, or cleanup activities. Most electronic load cells are compensated for tem¬perature variations likely to be encountered during nor¬mal operations. However, if a large difference is an¬ticipated between the calibration temperature [21°C (70°F)] and the average operating temperature, the cells should be conditioned to the operating temperature for at least 8 hr prior to installation. This is to insure that the initial reading, made under no-load conditions prior to installation, provides a stable value to which subse¬quent measurements can be referred. Hydraulic load cells tend to be temperature sensitive and should be used with that in mind. Also, hydraulic load cells tend to be soft compared to electronic types and will sometimes allow movement to take place in a system intended to be semirigid. Furthermore, hydrau¬lic load cells tend to be difficult to read remotely. Care must be taken to use bearing plates on both sides of load cells which are sufficiently rigid and of high enough bearing capacity to prevent bending and crush¬ing under load. This is very important with tieback load cells (basically a ring of steel) which can easily dig into bearing plates. MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING Except for a direct hit by a miner's axe or flyrock from a blast, most hydraulic load cells are nearly in¬destructible and require little, if any, maintenance. Hy¬draulic oil on the bearing plates is a good indication of a leak and the need for corrective action. Field maintenance of electronic load cells involves protecting the instrument and signal cable from mechani¬cal damage and from unnecessary exposure to dirt and moisture, and recognizing and correcting damage and the effects of normal wear and tear.

An engineering endeavor involves the creation of an expansive, environmentally conscious reinforced sloped MSE wall system. The objective is to enlarge a flat mining work area. Situated in southern Arizona, this mine is dedicated to extracting essential resources such as Manganese, zinc, silver, and lead, crucial for advancing clean and renewable energy initiatives. The project necessitates the implementation of a Mechanically Stabilized Earth retention system. This system aims to both expand the mine’s working area and facilitate access to underground tunnels. The expansion pad must be robust enough to endure the substantial loads exerted by heavy mining machinery. The wall’s reinforcement components are strategically designed to counteract the challenges posed by aggressive soil conditions with low resistivity. Furthermore, they must be resilient against potential damage during installation. The system’s ease of transportation is crucial due to challenging access conditions, and its design must allow for efficient drainage. A significant consideration is the integration of a face system that fosters vegetation growth and seamlessly merges with the existing flora of the area. In addition, plans include the construction of an access road downslope from the wall. The chosen solution involves a reinforced sloped system with a 70-degree incline. The wall’s surface is adorned with an erosion control mat, intended to promote the proliferation of vegetation. For added durability, the wire basket units are equipped with galvanized wire featuring a polymer coating. High tensile strip bonded geogrids, featuring a robust polyester core, provide essential reinforcement. The completed wall is an impressive feat, spanning 1500 feet in length and soaring to a height of 45 feet. It stands as a testament to innovative engineering in harmony with environmental and functional considerations.

INTRODUCTION Shabanie mine, situated some 180 km east of Bula¬wayo, has been a producer of chrysotile asbestos for more than 50 years. The ore bodies occur in serpentinized dunite, which overlies talc-carbonate schist. A zone of relatively competent rock of varying thickness occurs between the schist and the ore bodies, which are gen¬erally less competent. The hanging wall of the ore bodies is economic, and the hanging-wall serpentine carries a variable subeconomic amount of fiber. It is important to note that, in general, the ore body competence is less than that of the foot and hanging-wall formations. Historical After surface operations ceased, cut-and-fill stoping was used to win ore from underground; this was success¬ful until the increasingly stoped-out area caused insta¬bility in the stope pillars and back. Consequently, dur¬ing the early 1950s, a gradual change to cave-mining methods was made, the ore being won by hand lashing in drawpoints, situated in the basement of the stope blocks, and passed through orepasses under gravity to the haulage level some 13 m below. About this time, interest was focused on the sub¬level caving method in use in Swedish iron ore mines: it was felt that it might be applied economically to the Shabanie ore bodies. Accordingly, in 1958, an experi¬mental stope block was laid out in which sublevel inter¬vals and extraction tunnel spacing were 9 m. The tun¬nels (ring drilling drives) were oriented on strike-in contrast to the Swedish system, in which crosscuts that retreat from hanging to footwall are used. The advantages of the method were quickly appre¬ciated by the operating personnel and, despite the in¬evitable teething troubles pertaining to the introduction of any new mining method, it was not long before sub¬level caving was providing a high proportion of the mill feed. The disadvantages also became apparent at an early stage, however, and, from that time to the present, continuing modifications have been made to mining lay¬outs in an effort to improve ore recovery. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF METHOD The mine is served by a vertical hoisting shaft, in which two skips, a man cage and a service cage, provide adequate capacity for production requirements. The rock hoist is a Ward Leonard control hoist, in which two electric motors drive a common gearbox. The man winder is driven by an a-c motor. Several auxiliary shafts provide secondary egress and intake and return ventilation. Main haulage levels are above (Fig. I a and b). Blasthole fan patterns are drilled by drifters of 100 mm bore, drilling 41-mm holes; when a sufficient strike length has been drilled, a slot is cut in the upper¬most sublevel and the rings are broken into the slot. Initially, a limited tonnage is drawn, since it is essential to ensure that the hanging wall caves behind the retreat¬ing stope face. Once this has been established, maxi¬mum tonnage can be drawn, as described later in this chapter, under the heading "Draw Control." The broken rock is loaded by 0.14 and 0.20-m3 load¬ers into cocopans (rocker-dumping type of tipping truck), which are hand trammed to orepasses, discharg¬ing on the haulage where 11-t electric trolley locomo¬tives haul 3.95-m3 Granby cars to the main shaft bins. As is evident from Fig. 1, the layout is simple, the block is brought rapidly into production, there is a high degree of selectivity and flexibility, and the result is a low-cost high-productivity mining method. DEVELOPMENT Main haulages are developed at 3.2 x 3.2 m, and once the service winze connections have been completed the development of the sublevels is undertaken. The footwall drives are cut first, to obtain access to the block. These ends are of the standard section, 2.4 x 2.8 m, and from them crosscuts at intervals of 70 m are driven through the ore body to the hanging wall. These crosscuts are used to supplement the geo¬logical information previously obtained from diamond core drilling, and they provide additional and more de¬tailed data on fiber percentages and lengths, structural features, and other relevant criteria which are used to build up the geological assessment of the area and to classify it in terms of the geomechanics rock classification (Laubscher and Taylor, 1977). The crosscuts also allow the necessary orepasses to be sited conveniently so that tramming distances from the loading points are not excessive. Development Drilling Once the skeleton development has been completed, the extraction headings are developed at 2.4 x 2.4 m as shown in Fig. 1. Standard development practice is to use crews of a machine operator and his helper, equipped with air-leg mounted jackhammers, to drill rounds of 1.8 m with integral tungsten carbide tipped drill steel. 6.1 PRINCIPLES OF PLANNING GROUTING OPERATIONS FOR SHAFTS, DRIFTS AND TUNNELS The planning of integrated grouting of vertical, inclined or horizontal underground workings in saturated, fractured rock includes the following phases: 1. Planning for the collection and analysis of geological information concerning the characteristics of the struc¬tural deformation(s) that produced the details of the frac¬ture system being studied. 2. Planning for the acquisition of initial hydrogeological information produced by the flowmetric and hydrody¬namic investigations (described in Chapters 2 and 3). 3. Computing the initial engineering calculations of the ex¬pected or planned dimensions of the isolation curtains for each water-producing stratum (fracture zone) and the expected areal spreading pattern of the grout in each of these water-producing horizons. The selection of the lo¬cations, the initial optimal number of holes and the vol¬ume of grout needed to create each isolation curtain also are included in this phase. 4. The selection or development of a grout formula for the specific hydrogeological conditions that exist at the site. 5. Identification of a resource (deposit) required to produce the grouting clay. The planning of grouting operations must be supported by the acquisition of all necessary initial data, which in¬cludes: 1. The geographic location and administrative responsibil¬ity (ownership and regulatory constraints) of the mineral deposit and any peculiar features of the area where ex¬cavation of the underground workings is planned. The surface relief, the hydrographic network of the region, and the local climatic conditions must be evaluated prior to planning for buildings and waste discharges if any. 2. The economic status of the region, the available trans¬portation, the nature of the energy base, the water and heat supply sources, the location of construction mate¬rials suitable for making the grout all must be deter¬mined. 3. The geological and hydrogeological characterization of the work site must be accomplished. 4. The technical features of the shaft(s) and underground works must be characterized. 5. The organization's principal initial design plan features and the construction sequence of all buildings and struc¬tures must be developed. These must be correlated with the organization and schedule for excavating the under¬ground works. The technical characterization of a shaft or of other un¬derground workings must contain information about the purpose of the workings, the design depth, the planned excavation procedures along with cross-sections, and the parameters of the lining, if a lining is required. The geology of the section to be penetrated must include geological data obtained from existing exploration activities at the mineral deposit and conclusions about the shaft ex¬cavation conditions obtained from drilling technical moni¬toring holes and exploration drillholes. The interpreted stratigraphic regime, including the thickness, strike and dip of each stratum, must be shown in cross-section. The tec¬tonics, including all geologic structures, must be presented by cross-sections. The bedding orientations must be used to identify anticlines, synclines, monoclines and faults. The lithologic composition and the drillability of the rock com¬prising the section must be examined. The character of the rock's fracture pattern must be presented. Finally the per¬meability, porosity and storage characteristics of each aqui¬fer must be determined by in situ hydraulic property testing (injection tests or pumping tests, as described in Chapter 3). The fracture pattern of the indurated rock is presented in reports derived from geo-exploration borehole studies and from studies of outcrops on the surface and in all nearby underground workings. The extent of each fracture zone is mapped in three dimensions. The distribution of fracture apertures, the nature of the fractures according to each litho¬logic stratum, and the relationship of bedding planes to each fracture system are all determined. Acoustic logs, downhole cameras, caliper logs, oriented core, and any other appro¬priate geophysical tools available are used to construct the data base for this purpose. The hydrogeological characterization of the geologic section to be penetrated by the workings is based on the analysis of hydrogeological data collected during the drill¬ing and testing of technical monitoring holes and from in¬formation on ground water inflow collected during the ex¬cavation of nearby underground workings, if such workings exist. The hydrogeologic characterization must contain the following information: 1. The identification of all aquifers, their thicknesses and their locations in the section, 2. The distribution of hydrostatic head in the ground water in three dimensions, 3. The coefficient of saturated hydraulic conductivity (per¬ meability) of each aquifer, 4. The porosity and storativity of each aquifer, and 5. The projected rate of water inflow into the shaft, drift or tunnel for each aquifer prior to grouting. This step is used to identify the zones to be grouted.
