A genetic model for the genesis of high-grade (>65 wt per cent Fe) Proterozoic, banded iron formation (BIF)-related iron deposits such as the Tom Price, Mount Whaleback deposits in the Hamersley Province (Australia), the N4E, N4W, N5 deposits at Carajßs (Brazil), the Aguas Claras, Conceitpo, and Casa de Pedra deposits in the Iron Quadrangle (Brazil), the Donkerpoort West, Kwagas East deposit in the Thabazimbi iron ore district (South Africa), or the Saksagan ore field at Krivoy Rog (Ukraine), needs to take into account the: timing of regional metamorphism with respect to the upgrade of BIF to high-grade iron ore; significance and relationship of the proto-ore to the hydrothermal alteration minerals and zonation and the process of iron enrichment; source and oxidation state of the hydrothermal fluids that caused the iron enrichment; types of geochemical processes that caused the hydrothermal alteration and iron enrichment; and significance of the widespread carbonatisation of the host rocks as a prerequisite for high-grade BIF-related iron mineralisation.We argue that a unifying model for high-grade BIF-related iron deposits cannot, presently, adequately explain the geological and geochemical characteristics observed in these deposits and, therefore, provide two end-member models that take into account the diversity of geological and geochemical ore deposit features. Our discrete model for the genesis of high-grade, BIF-related iron deposits is based on the interpreted tectonic setting, distinct hydrothermal fluid source of, and processes observed in, major BIF-related iron deposits. We divide two end-members: Proterozoic deep fault-magmatic (Carajßs) type, and Proterozoic rift-basin (Hamersley) type.Both end-members experienced varying degrees of deep weathering episodes that effected the hypogene enrichment and, ultimately, yielded the high-grade iron ore mined in many places today.

The process of mine planning at AnacondaÆs nickel and cobalt laterite operation located at Murrin-Murrin in the Northern Goldfields of Western Australia is carried out in a number of stages in an endeavour to determine the optimum mining sequence in order to maintain supply to the 4 Mtpa plant subject to operational constraints. The 296 Mt @ 0.99 per cent Ni and 0.064 per cent Co ore reserve (based on a cut-off grade of 0.8 per cent Nickel) is spread geographically widely over three regions comprising Murrin North (15 km + 15 km), Murrin South (7 km + 16 km) and Murrin East (5 km + 13 km) (refer Figure 2). The nickel mineralisation has been broken up further within each region into 18 separate manageable block models representing the 32 different deposits. The models are based initially on the 50 m + 50 m resource drilling for long term planning and updated with 12.5 m + 12.5 m grade control drilling prior to mining. Each of the individual block models are optimised using Whittle 4X software to provide the shells used as the basis for each of the 126 pit designs. The pits are generally nested with starter pits targeting the higher value shells with subsequent pits incrementally cutting back ultimately to the life of mine shells. A series of steps including: the coding of the individual pits into the block model; data export; TCL scripting (to calculate additional economic and tracking information); importing; and re-blocking; completes the transfer of the data into a MineMax (mixed integer linear programming schedule optimising software) model. Using MineMax and the application of operational and production constraints allows the optimisation, assessment and economic evaluation of alternative scenarios in order to determine the optimum life of mine plan and schedule.

A number of mines in Australia have experienced premature detonations caused by bulk explosives reacting with the rock type being blasted. Premature detonations are extremely high risk events as they are unplanned, occurring at any place, at any time, potentially resulting in high loss (personnel and equipment). Many Australian mines have also experienced spontaneous combustion where spilt explosive reacts vigorously with the rock type. Premature detonation in these cases does not occur due to the lack of confinement and the volume of explosive present, but these reactions could impinge on the surface initiation system and provide an early warning of future premature detonations. The explosive ground reactivity phenomena is not restricted to Australia with similar incidents being reported in North and South America, South Africa, China and South East Asia. All reported incidents have two common denominators, being the presence of sulphide rock types and nitrate based explosives. Both premature detonation and spontaneous combustion result from the same series of reactions of partially weathered sulphides that ultimately result in the violent decomposition of the ammonium nitrate based explosive. A number of relatively easily observable indicators can be used to assess a particular minesiteÆs potential for explosive ground reactivity. The presence of two or more of these indicators means that minesite personnel should contact their explosives manufacturer for assistance in determining if a problem exists and if so then developing strategies to overcome the situation. The paper describes the indicators as well as discussing, via a case study, the holistic approach required to efficiently develop a relevant æSafe and Efficient Blasting ProcedureÆ to deal with explosive ground reactivity problems.

Marvel Loch South Pit has had a number of stages of open and underground mining activities before acquisition by Sons of Gwalia. The historical pit had achieved a completed pit depth of 150 metres and the shaft and decline mine had reached approximately 220 metres in depth using open stope mining methods. The various mining methods reflect the various economics and industry practice at the time. The South Pit ore zones are medium grade (~2.5 g/t) but have a regular geometry and large tonnes per vertical metre. A number of studies have been completed up to a pre-feasibility stage looking at options to extend the pit depth and to lower the unit cost of gold production. The options considered were the re-optimisation of the pit to determine further cutbacks or the innovative use of an in-the-wall ramp. The in-the-wall ramp (tunnel) would permit the removal of the in pit ramp to expose additional ore that was within the footprint of the ramp design and to provide the opportunity to increase the final pit depth. Similar mining method has only been used at Three Mile (Coolgardie, WA) and Chalice Mine (Norseman, WA). The tunnel would serve as a gateway for further extension of the south mine and the central ore zone via underground mining methods. The ultimate depth of the South Pit has been extended to 310 metres below surface and significant additional ore has been recovered. This paper will give an insight into the various studies to optimise the Tunnel mining method, the determination of the various tunnel dimensions, and the phases of mining to arrive at the completed design.

THERE is available a considerable amount of literature concerning the practice, and, to a smaller extent, the theory of ventilation as it applies to coal mines. Publications considering the subject of ventilation of metal mines from a practical viewpoint are much less numerous, whilst the treatment of the theoretical aspect of the question (except in so far as is common to coal mining) appears to have been almost neglected. This may be due to one of two causes (a) That in many metal mines (especially those which have not attained a great depth), on account of the greater number of connections with the surface, as compared with coal mines, natural ventilation has sufficed.(b) That in metal mines where the foregoing is not the case the solution of the ventilation problem from theoretical considerations has been regarded as involving so many complications that any attempt at the determination of a set of concrete ventilation figures applying to and throughout the mine would be futile. Whilst it is freely admitted that the difficulties inherent in the application of theory to the ventilation of metal mines are numerous, it must also be admitted that few attempts have been made to overcome them. The ultimate aim, of course, would be the collection of sufficient data to enable the probable behaviour of the air-currents throughout the whole of the workings of any mine to be accurately predicted under any particular set of circumstances. There are a number of examples of how environmental factors have been integrated into the water management aspects of mining projects. The Kingston Lignite project in South Australia, Pine Creek Gold Mine in the Northern Territory, gravel and sand extraction from the Nepean River flood plain near Penrith, and the Olympic Dam Project have all illustrated that consideration of environmental factors can be integrated with project developments, with beneficial outcomes for both the project and the environment.Each of the above cases demonstrated an individually significant environmental issue, directly related to the interaction between the proposed project and its environment. In each case, careful research and an integrated approach to the problem resulted in a solution that gave both maximum protection to the environment and optimum consideration to the economic feasibility and success of the proposed project.The solutions ranged from alternative mining methods and improved waste and water management through to the ultimate objective of converting a mining project into a major water-based recreation source. These examples have set a precedent that will contribute ignificantly to the successful development of future projects.

In large companies with mining operations spread over multiple sites, it is essential that consistency between sites is maintained in preparing and classifying resource and reserve estimates. The endorsement by The AusLMM and AMIC of the "Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves" and the subsequent incorporation of reference to the code into the ASX listing rules for mining companies has provided a basis for the consistent classification of resources and reserves. However, compliance with other criteria more or less stringent than the Australasian Code can present some reporting difficulties. Examples include listing requirements for foreign stock exchanges, particular Acts of Parliament that may apply to individual leases, constraints imposed by individual companies on their own leases, and ultimately, reserves for short, medium and long term planning. Confusion can arise when any two or more sets of reserves for the same lease are compared.. To alleviate this confusion, a standardised procedure was developed for the calculation and classification of coal resources and reserves. The procedure which is geostatistically based incorporates a technique called "Irregular Block Kriging" where specific mining blocks are directly kriged. The procedure has enabled those engineers and geologists with only a basic understanding of geostatistics to apply the technique and not feel hampered by some of the complex mathematics which in the past has tended to inhibit and overcomplicate the use of geostatistics. The procedure has resulted in "cleaner" data bases and hence more reliable reserve estimates.

This paper describes the results of the field application tests at Miike Colliery on the integrated automatization of the longwall mining system for medium thick coal seam. The purpose of the research is to develop an automatic longwall mining system which can be controlled accurately from outside of the face, and the ultimate goal is an eliminate of men from the face. Presently, the field test is being conducted in Yotsuyama mine following to a success in the performance test on surface. Remote Batch Control System for shield supports has been adapted to operate all supports from the control panel located at the entrance of the face. Remote monitoring and control system of the drum shearer has also been tested. The system makes it possible to operate the shearer either at the main gate or full automatic. Productivity and safety will be substantially improved as those systems enable to eliminate all workers from the face under the severe working conditions with high ground pressure and hot and humid atmosphere due to increasing mining depth. So far, we have been satisfied with the results of the field test and those system will be an effective countermeasure to operate the face with a high risk of rock-burst.

Rational design of layouts for longwall operations is greatly facilitated by use of an accurate and economical method for predicting stresses and displacements. The displacement discontinuity method (a form of boundary element method) is based on replacing actual excavation geometries by thin slits of the same plan area. This approach allows three-dimensional stress- analysis at a fraction of the cost of alternative methods. The analyses can be readily performed on economical microcomputers, putting the analysis capability within the reach of mine-site personnel. This paper describes investigations associated with the German Creek Central Colliery, the first longwall operation in Queensland's Bowen Basin. The material properties used in the model, in particular the rock mass and goaf properties, have been 'tuned' to fit stress measurements obtained during extraction of the first and second longwall panels at the mine. The study shows that model predictions based on suitably scaled anisotropic rock strata properties are in good agreement with the stress measurements made to date. This model predicts average chain pillar loads significantly higher than predicted by models based on United Kingdom conditions. A working chain pillar design method is proposed using average pillar loads predicted by the numerical model and ultimate strength characteristics given by Bieniawski's formula.

Dilution in underground coal operations can be underestimated by up to five times during feasibility studies, with disastrous economic consequences. Every one per cent of stone waste introduced can reduce an in situ specific energy of 25 MJ/kg by some 0.25 MJ/kg and increases the abrasiveness of the run-of-mine coal. Where a wash plant is not in place, penalties imposed for not meeting contractual specifications alone can amount to some $A 1 million per year. This paper presents a method for monitoring, reporting and ultimately controlling dilution in an underground coal mining operation and presents the dilution trends from a continuous miner/longwall mine over an eight year period. The overall dilution level for the mine can be back-calculated by comparing the run-of-mine coal quality to the predicted in situ, undiluted quality. However, this will not identify the actual contaminant types, areas of the mine responsible for the dilution and the reasons for the dilution. This additional information is essential for controlling dilution to acceptable levels. Quality and horizon control using existing sampling information is generally only adequate for longer-term control purposes, and is not suitable for monitoring mining-induced dilution. The cost of close-spaced surface drilling to collect the information necessary for short-term control is prohibitive, particularly for deeper mines. However, much of this data can be collected through underground channel sampling and horizon control measurements taken during continuous miner development and longwall extraction. The mine runs the risk of not meeting contractual quality specifications and of increased equipment wear if this additional information is not available and the sources of dilution cannot be controlled. The information can also be used to plan longwall extraction heights on a short-term scale with resulting improvements in productivity.

In order to meet the increasing demand for coal for their Newcastle Steel Works, the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd., on June 5, 1937, approved of a scheme to sink a tunnel to the Victoria Seam at their Burwood Colliery. This seam was virgin at this locality and lay nominally horizontal at a depth of 320ft. vertical from the surface.For the purpose of despatch of the coal produced it was decided that the tunnel be equipped with a rubber belt conveyor system.This was a comparatively new departure in Australia, and, indeed, was one of the first installations of its kind in the world, designed to raise coal from considerable depth by this means. Later the tunnel was extended to the Borehole Seam, which lay nominally horizontal at a vertical depth of 600ft. from the surface. The whole installation is the subject of this paper.In planning a project of this kind, consideration had to be given to the following:-1. In nature, ilmenite (FeTiO3) undergoes weathering through oxidation and removal of Fe to form an apparently continuous series of compositions from ilmenite to pseudorutile (ideally Fe2Ti3O9), and with further weathering, to leucoxene. To determine the mechanism of acid-leaching of ilmenite to ultimately form rutile, we have carried out an experimental study of ilmenite alteration in autoclaves at 150¦C in HCl solutions. Resulting products were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe and Raman spectroscopy. In some experiments the solution was initially enriched in 18O and the distribution of the isotope in the alteration products mapped from the peak shift in the Raman spectra. The results indicate that the alteration may proceed in two stages, each with a sharp interface between the parent phase and the product. The alteration begins at the original ilmenite crystal surface and along cracks through which the fluid can migrate. The first alteration product is pseudorutile û no phases intermediate between ilmenite and pseudorutile were detected. The textural relationship between ilmenite and pseudorutile suggests a coupled dissolution-reprecipitation mechanism rather than a solid state continuous oxidation and Fe diffusion mechanism. The second stage involves a further dissolution-reprecipitation step to form rutile. Raman spectroscopy shows that the 18O is incorporated in the rutile during the recrystallisation. Throughout the alteration process the original morphology of the ilmenite is preserved although the product is highly porous. The rutile inherits crystallographic information from the parent ilmenite, resulting in a triply-twinned rutile microstructure.

WMC Resources Olympic Dam Operation located in South Australia, is a poly metallic underground sublevel open stoping (SLOS) mining operation with a current annual production rate in excess of 9.0 Mt. Stope size, geometries, geotechnical considerations, drilling and blasting are critical components in stope performance. These factors are further influenced by stringent ventilation requirements due to the presence of airborne radioactive contaminants from uranium mineralisation. Stope planning is complex and mass blasting methodologies have been trialled at Olympic Dam with the view to reducing the frequency of stope blasts, improving stope stability, productivity and ultimately improving overall stope performance. A key aspect in the ability to undertake underground mass blasts of this scale is the application of i-konTM electronic initiation technology by Orica. In the past two years in excess of three million tonnes has been initiated utilising this electronic technology, with an average blast of 250 000 t ranging to the largest to date being 580 000 t. By providing flexibility in blast designs, the use of electronic detonators has allowed mass firings over multiple sublevels. This has resulted in a significant reduction in stope extraction steps compared to conventional pyrotechnic firings. The benefits of this reduction in the number of stope blasts are wide ranging from improved stability of interim stope voids between blasts, reduced blasthole damage, improved blast vibration management and reduction of complex changes to ventilation systems for blasting.

The purpose of this paper is to explain the basic structure of how minerals are marketed, whilst highlighting the essential factors that mine management needs to be confident are incorporated into a mineÆs marketing strategy. The traditional mine management approach to marketing has been to defer its scrutiny to the marketing manager and take a largely passive role. It is this paperÆs assertion that mine management needs to become more proactive and provide greater strategic input into the marketing process. Irrespective of what mineral your mine produces, the key marketing principles remain constant and need to be understood and managed to extract the full benefit on behalf of the mining asset. From a mine management perspective, success is ultimately linked to understanding these marketing principles and ensuring that they are effectively addressed by your mineÆs marketing strategy. This paper will unashamedly attempt to simplify marketing by explaining how the basic fundamentals of supply and demand set market direction, the importance of a comprehensive marketing strategy, the importance of customer relationships and how contracts and prices are typically negotiated. This paper will use examples from the metallurgical coal (met coal) industry to highlight these points. The paper will also provide a template for developing the critical mine interaction that needs to exist between the marketing department and management to develop a æwhole of mineÆ approach to marketing. It is this core group that will be strategically responsible for delivering the commitments your mine has made to your customers. For mine management not to be actively involved in this process puts at æriskÆ the hard won production and cost efficiencies achieved at your mine and ignores the opportunity to maximise your current and future revenue streams. And whilst this paper recognises that is arguably unreasonable for mine management to become æmarketing expertsÆ, it also argues that it is unreasonable for a mine management to divorce themselves from the process.

IT is most remarkable and valuable property of mediurn and high carbon steels that they should be so susceptible to heat treatment, the wide range of variability in tenacity, ductility, etc, due to the normal influence of the carbon in the untreated material being enormously inereased thereby.The physical properties of steel and other metals are much more closely related to their structure than to their ultimate analysis.For instance, we may by chemical analysis determine the carbon content of a steel to be 0.5% ; but this information alone is insufficient to enable us to say what are the physical properties of the metal.Such a steel may possess 11 tensile strength of anything from 35 tons per sq. in., with much ductility, up to 80 tons per sq. in., with practically no ductility, according to its heat treatment. A microscopie examination, on the other hand, would show the structural composition of the steel, from which its physical properties could be approximately deduced. Don Hausen was a pioneer in the field of quantitative mineralogy. Methodology that he developed at Newmont almost 40 years ago is still employed today, only the technology has advanced. Petrographic methods were stressed with an emphasis on alteration, mineralisation and paragenesis. Methodologies employed by Don on the Carlin deposit were applied to developing the Carlin Trend by helping to work out lithology and structure, which ultimately led to the discovery of deep high-grade deposits. Quantitative methods used by Don on San Manuel, Copper Creek and Superior, Arizona were applied to the development of the Batu Hijau Deposit in Indonesia. Advancements in technology since DonÆs time have made the mineralogist much more efficient. Manual measurement of peak heights off of strip charts for semiquantitative XRD has been replaced by software that does Rietveld refinement and whole pattern fitting. Hand contouring of XRD data has been replaced by digitised data incorporated into geologic models. Optical point counting, which would take a dayÆs work to process 1000 points, has been replaced by automated SEM methods where 20 000 points are possible in an hour. The use of the optical microscope remains relatively unchanged, and still remains as Don emphasised the æeyesÆ of mineral exploration. However, the information can be relayed much more quickly with digital image capture and electronic data transfer. Don insisted on becoming involved in projects at the grassroots level and supporting the project through mine closure. This made the mineralogist a liaison between exploration geologists, mine geologists, metallurgists and mine engineers. The methodology that Don helped develop continues to provide invaluable support to Newmont geologists and metallurgists worldwide today.

THE power requirements of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company at Queenstown, Tasmania, have, since the inception of smelting operations in June, 1,,896, been derived continuously from the extensive forests in the watershed of the Queen River, adjacent to -the works, the firewood being of good quality, mainly composed of myrtle or beech (Fagus Ounninghami), eucalypts, and manuka (Leptospermum ericoides).The country is very rugged and mountainous, indented by numerous ravines and gullies, and intersected by many creeks, which are subject to periodical floods, under the influence of a heavy and persistent rainfall. The areas so far exploited aggregate a total of about 42 sq. 'miles, and this denuded country gives promise of ultimately becoming very valuable pastoral ground for cattle-raising. The tonnage of wood yielded per acre varies from 40 to 100 tons on stack measurement of 80 cub. ft. per ton, 60 tons per acre being considered a good average yield. The gross amount of firewood handled during the past 13 years approximates 1,200,000 tons, the greater portion of which has been obtained by ordinary tramming methods. The relative effects of the two basic mechanisms contributing to rock breakage during blasting, shock and gas penetration, are neither well understood nor well characterized, and need further clarification. Blasthole liner (BHL) tests separate the two effects, and by enabling direct measurement of borehole expansion give insight into the shock/gas energy partitioning in rock confinement. The hydrodynamic code DYNA2D is used to simulate the shock effect of the detonation of emulsion in a stainless steel lined hole, and the predicted expansion is compared with experiment. Workers in the past have neglected near-blasthole phenomena and have calibrated models based on stress measurements remote from the blasthole. Extrapolation back to the blasthole has inherent limitations, and indeed, one of the deficiencies of these models is that they have not been able to predict correct borehole expansions, as observed in BHL experiments. DYNA2D has been enhanced by the ICI group with a detonation model which resolves the explosive reaction zone. As a preliminary step towards the ultimate goal of devising a practical damage model, simulations are used to predict the maximum expansion that would take place if the rock were to remain undamaged. Various material parameters are investigated and it is shown that calculated liner expansions are appreciably lower than measured values for high rock yield strengths, while greater than values for low yield strengths.

This paper discusses the dewatering strategy adopted and the considerations and procedures required to incorporate a dewaterinq scheme into the Mt Whaleback mining operation. It concludes that in pit pre-dewaterinq has successfully allowed mining to progress below the standing water level with the minimum of disruption or radical change to the mining method. It is recognised however, that dewatering is not a static activity and there is a requirement for ongoing investigations and development. Pre-dewatering commenced in October, 1984. Purpose designed pumping trailers have been employed to minimise the loss of pump availability resulting from the frequent. need to remove and reinstall pumps when close vicinity blasts occur. To July, 1986, some 0.5 Mm' of groundwater had been pumped from the unconfined orebody aquifer. Mining has progressed to some 20 m below the standing water level without. any undue water associated problems. Ultimately, it is ,cheduled to extend some 300 in below the original water level in the West Pit. With the development of an increasing area of the mine below the standing water level, the influence of seasonal high intensity rainfall events, which had previously caused little concern, now need to be addressed.
