"INTRODUCTION Adoption of rubber-tire shuttle cars underground in conjunction with mobile coal-loading machines has introduced new problems in the control of dust on mine roadways. Where this type of loading and transportation is used, development and extraction are generally rapid, with the result that much coal is spilled from the shuttle cars during normal operation, Coal in the roadways from this source and from sloughing of the ribs is ground to fine dust by the wheels of the 'shuttle cars and by the treads of the loading and mining machines. The coal dust usually is somewhat contaminated by pulverized rock, and the mixture could not be loaded with the run-of-mine coal without undue contamination of the product even if it were cleaned up promptly.The presence of large quantities of fine, loose dust, which is constantly stirred up and kept in suspension in air by the traffic, constitutes a grave explosion hazard, reduces visibility along the roadways, and is physiologically harmful to the workmen who breathe the air. From the operating standpoint the loose material is undesirable along the roadways because it provides poor traction for the trucks and thereby increases wear and power consumption. The dust-explosion hazard could be eliminated or reduced by frequent application of sufficient rock dust on the roadbed; but this would not remedy the other difficulties, and in fact it might intensify them. Where practicable, the most direct and effective safety measure is to clean up and remove promptly all dust that forms and settles on the roadways. Unfortunately, in many cases this procedure is not feasible. A third Suggested remedy is to prevent dispersal of the dust into the air and to promote its consolidation on the floor by wetting the dust particles.During the past few years several mines have used calcium chloride on shuttle-car roadways to allay the dust thereon. When exposed to the' humid atmosphere of the mine this salt absorbs Moisture from the air and deliquesces, and in this way wets the dust on the floor of the roadway. In a survey conducted in coal mines in southern West Virginia and in eastern Kentucky where calcium chloride has been in use, somewhat conflicting re- ports were received regarding the merits of the application, and several operators have abandoned the practice either because of actual or assumed disadvantages. The purpose of the study described in this report was to collect and correlate evidence and, on the basis of experimental data obtained in the field and in laboratory tests, to present a clearer picture of the factors involved in the allaying of dust by use of salts."

The King Mountain study area is centered about 120 air km northwest of Blackfoot, and 30 air km north of Arco, Idaho. The study area makes up the southern one-third of the northwest-trending Lost River Range--the highest mountain range in Idaho. The area is predominantly underlain by Paleozoic-age marine limestone and lesser dolostone, with a relatively small inlier of silica-rich, Ordovician-age quartzite. There are vast, unquantified resources of these industrial minerals present; however, special markets need to be developed for these resources which are near enough for transportation costs to be competitive. Five prospects were found in the study area; however, only one, the Elbow quartz silica prospect, contains resources and current claims. There has been no mineral production in the study area.

The Bureau of Mines developed methods for fragmenting oil shale formations with chemical explosives to prepare oil shale for in situ retorting and to evaluate the extent of fragmentation by various methods. A combination of three methods of explosive fracturing was used: (1) The displacement and detonation of a liquid chemical explosive in a natural fracture system; (2) the use of 60-pct dynamite to relieve stress conditions of the rock around the wellbore; and (3) the use of pelletized TNT in a series of wellbore shots to fragment the oil shale. An attempt was made to seal or grout around the fragmented oil shale by drilling 67 holes and displacing approximately 200 bbl of neat cement in the fracture system to aid in evaluating the fragmented zone, Seven methods were used to evaluate the fragmented zone. The primary evaluation method was the recording of seismic waves to delineate the fragmented zone with results based on arrival time, amplitude, and record quality. The data from the seismic measurements indicated the extensively fragmented zone was approximately 95 ft in diameter and 70 ft thick. Results of the remaining methods of evaluating fractures--including air-flow tests, coring of the expected fragmented zone, elevation measurements to indicate overburden crowning, and surveys with high-speed camera, impression packer, and down-hole camera--agreed with and supported the data from seismic measurements. Further field application of explosive fracturing and evaluation methods is needed to determine when a zone of oil shale is effectively fragmented for efficient in situ retorting.

Accurate measurements of physical dimensions of a section of stainless steel capillary tubing are presented and used to develop two final working equations for an absolute gas viscosimeter. The effects of pressure and temperature on these dimensions are considered. The internal surface finish and nonuniformity of the capillary bore are discussed, as well as entrance, kinetic energy, gas slippage, and gas compressibility correction factors.

"The potential health effects of quartz-bearing airborne dust in mine and mill atmospheres point to the need for the quantification of quartz content in the source material for determining the source-sink relationships and for choosing applicable control measures. While a standard method exists from a regulatory point of view for the sampling of coal mine atmospheres for determining (i) respirable dust concentrations and (ii) the amount of quartz in the samples, there is no generally accepted standard method for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rocks. Generally, the bulk sample is reduced to a powder for producing quartz analysis samples. Extensive controls arc necessary to ensure representativeness of the analysis samples when these are very minute fractions of the bulk samples. Since the amount of analysis sample is not limited, alternative methods for quartz analysis may also be tried. It is, however, necessary to adopt a procedure which will satisfy several statistical requirements to guarantee representativeness of the quartz analysis samples.In this paper, the important factors in the preparation of quartz analysis samples from the host rocks and bulk samples are discussed. The method developed to prepare the analysis samples is outlined. The results of application of the procedures are presented. The procedure developed for quartz analysis sample preparation is based on sound statistical foundations. The procedure has been validated for reproducibility and homogeneity.The current methods used for quartz analysis in powders are the P-7 infrared spectrometry and quantitative X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Both have similar restrictions concerning the sample characteristics and operational problems, which arc intrinsic to radiation beams, device geometry, mechanics and controls of the radiation behavior. Although improvements can be made in the spectrometers and diffractometers, some of the most important steps are the procedures for analysis sample preparation from bulk samples and for calibration of the instruments. The sample preparation process is often referred to as one of grinding and sizing the bulk sample to generate the powder for the scanning devices. The particle sizes are referred to and their influence emphasized but the representativeness of the sample is assumed. Assuring sample representativeness during the sample preparation procedures is critical.For the sampling of airborne respirable dust in coal mines, the collection devices, the collection procedures and the analysis procedures are defined. This is not true for bulk samples where weights must be reduced thousands of times to generate the analysis samples for the scanning devices. The specifications to be developed may include bulk sample amount, sample reduction procedures, sample particle size distribution and sample amounts. However, the common problem of insufficient sample amount which is often encountered with mine airborne dust samples need not exist for bulk samples. Further, the same bulk sample can yield analysis samples for several experiments. The latter, of course, requires sample homogeneity.Three concepts are important in the selection of any procedure for sample preparation and analysis. These arc accuracy, reproducibility and representativeness. The adopted procedure has to guarantee a homogeneous sample representative of the population, a defined level of accuracy and reproducibility. Important statistical concepts are embedded in these requirements, particularly with respect to estimation and dispersion errors. Accuracy and reproducibility are totally different though not independent concepts. Estimation is related to accuracy and the true value. Dispersion is related to reproducibility and is measured by the classical statistical standard deviation of the distribution of a series of measurements or analysis performed over the same lot or analysis sample. Eight blasts were fired in a 2-1/2-ft bench in the Stewartville member of the Galena Limestone formation in an aggregate quarry near Stewartville, Minn. The shots were dimensionally proportional to production-size bench blasts and were about 5 to 10 percent of full scale. The effects of site, timing of initiation, and burden-to-spacing ratio were studied in a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial experiment, using three boreholes, caw;, containing a 1/2-in charge diameter of high-density ammonia dynamite, in each blast. Detonation velocity measurements indicated that the dynamite detonated satisfactorily in the 1/2-in charge diameter. The effects of the three experimental variables were analyzed by weight for the percentage of oversized material produced and for size distributions determined by screening the entire muckpiles. The bench faces were painted before each shot in an effort to determine the origin of the oversized material. The square pattern (burden and spacing = 15 in) produced finer overall fragmentation and less oversized material than the rectangular pattern (burden = 15 in; spacing = 22-1/2 in). Sites 1 and 2 were about ft apart. Although site 2 produced slightly better overall fragmentation than site 1, the amounts of oversized material produced showed no significant difference. The timing of initiation (instantaneous or delayed) did not significantly influence the overall fragmentation or the amount of oversized material produced.

The production operation of a Kerpely gas producer at Louisiana, Mo., is described. This unit, originally designed for airblown operation was modified to permit using oxygen in the blast in place of air. The first runs J for test purposes, were made in June 1950. After this, seven production runs were made and these are the subject of this report. Total gasification time was 245 days. In each run, Nut or Pea coke or mixtures of both at a rate varying from 1,700 to 2,300 pounds per hour was converted with oxygen and saturated steam to produce synthesis gas - primarily carbon monoxide and hydrogen -approximating a predetermined rate of 80,000 to 95,000 cu. ft. per hour and a predetermined hydrogen-carbon monoxide ratio, The requirements per 1,000 std. cu. ft. of (CO + H2) were 21.6 to 30 pounds of coke, 213 to 267 std. cu. ft. of oxygen, and 3L4 to 47.B pounds of steam.

The Burgin shaft of Bear Creek Mining Co. near Eureka, Utah, was sunk during 1956 and 1957 as part of an exploratory program, searching for lead, zinc, copper, silver, and gold ore bodies hidden from the surface by several hundred feet of volcanic rocks. This paper describes the sinking methods and operating practices of Centennial Development Co., contracting firm for Bear Creek Mining Co., in sinking a 3-compartment vertical shaft 1,100 feet. The operation featured the Cryderman positive-action, clam-type shaft mucker. The shaft was completed in 142 days by a shaft crew of 10 men and a top force of 10 men, including supervision.

For many years it has been considered that an average of 50 percent of the coal in the deposits exploited has been recovered. Owing to many changes in mining methods during the past two decades, this study was initiated to obtain an up-to-date measurement of recovery percentage and thus establish part of the basis from which presently recoverable reserves may be estimated. Recovery percentages were determined within mined areas of 200 underground coal mines. These comprised a statistical sample selected to be representative of operating mines in relation to their significance to depletion of reserves. The results ranged from 29 to 91 percent and averaged 57.0 ± 1.7 percent (95-percent confidence limit). Six factors were identified mathematically as significantly affecting recovery percentages: (1) Pillaring system, (2) top rock and conditions, (3) bottom rock and conditions, (4) marketability, (5) coalbed thickness, and (6) productivity. Skill and attitude of mine operators toward recovery, although not measured, were probable factors. Five other variables that were tested did not show any significant relationship with recovery percentages. Also, five mining equipment features were identified, through discussions with mine officials, as affecting adversely recovery percentage at some mines.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines explored new methods and technology for extracting coal from the Appalachian Mountain region of the Eastern United States. These methods were aimed at extracting coal from thin seams and focused on the use of "roof-fall-tolerant" (RFT) mining concepts. These methods could be used on existing, abandoned highwalls or in conjunction with new highwall mining. The research was conducted using small-scale and quasi-full-scale physical models to obtain experimental results. Details are provided on (1) the quasi-full-scale model for cross-ridge mining, (2) the quasi-full-scale model for down-ridge mining, (3) the test results of these models, and (4) recommendations for future research. Significant results include demonstration of the RFT concept, a discussion of expected coal produced from these methods, and recommendations for future research.

THIS PAPER is concerned with two aspects of the behavior of coal: (1) Dispersion by solvents atmospheric pressure and high temperature and (2) the destruction and regeneration of the coking properties of coal. Several pure polycyclic compounds and a coal-tar fraction were found to extract 95 percent of the organic material of a bituminous coal. About 20 percent of the extract was soluble in benzene, and this fraction contained the ?coking principle? of the coal. From an extensive chemical spectroscopic, and x-ray study of the benzene-soluble material, some conclusions could be drawn concerning the composition and structure of this fraction of coal. A possible commercial application of the extraction technique is in the preparation of low-ash carbonaceous material for the manufacture of electrode carbon.

Domestic expenditures by the U.S. petroleum industry have exhibited distinctive shifts in emphasis over the past 20 years. From the end of World War II to 1955, expenditures for all phases of the industry expanded. Although over one-half of all expenditures were for production, the relative emphasis was changed after 1956-58 from production toward processing and marketing. The period 1967-69 marked the beginning of a return to emphasis on exploration and production. These trends in expenditure patterns are logical and rational when related to domestic and international economic conditions and to the widespread application of improved production technology. As the immense job of developing the oil resources of Alaska and other regions begins, the petroleum industry will continue to turn to external sources for working capital. Long-term debt will probably be the principal method of external financing through 1970, but a definite shift toward new common and preferred stocks will be made. Higher product prices may be sought by the petroleum industry, but the economics of crude-oil production, changes in the tax structure, and possible changes in the oil imports control program make the price structure of crude oil and crude-oil products unpredictable at the present time.

The investigations described herein are concerned with a portion of a systematic research, by the Federal Bureau of Mines on ductile titanium. The Bureau's work on the metal has resulted in development of a semi commercial process for the preparation of titanium and has also made available significant information on the fabrication and physical properties of this new strong, light, corrosion-resistant metal. Considerable interest has been aroused by this work, and a number of other laboratories have begun similar investigations. However, the necessity for Consolidating titanium by normal powder metallurgy methods presents difficulties in producing commercial forms and shapes on a large scale. This investigation was therefore undertaken for the purpose of improving the technique for consolidation of titanium powder into solid nonporous metal.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the potential of in situ leach mining a variety of Cu, Mn, and Au-Ag ores. Geologic characterization of ore samples from laboratory leaching experiments is conducted both prior to and after leaching to assess the effects of leaching on the chemistry, mineralogy, and texture of the rocks. The identification and chemical compositions of ore, gangue, and reaction products are determined by a combination of techniques such as reflected and transmitted light microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, electron microprobe analysis, and backscattered electron imaging with scanning electron microscopy. The distribution of the desired metal in various mineral phases can be illustrated using elemental X-ray maps. The potential of reactive gangue minerals to rob Cu from leach solutions is investigated with the aid of transmission electron microscopy. Porosity and permeability are measured to determine how effectively the host rock can transmit leach solution. Textural relationships between ore, gangue, secondary reaction products, and fluid channelways are determined by petrographic examination and are documented by optical photomicrographs and secondary electron imaging. Representative sample selection is described, and several epoxy impregnation and sample mounting techniques are discussed.

This report is in partial fulfillment of Contract S0241051 awarded to COMINEC on June 27, 1974. 'Me purpose of the work under this contract is to develop a conceptual design for an automated longwall mining system. The conceptual design will serve as the basis for future design and development of an automated longwall mining system capable of sustained production in excess of 2,500 tons per shift with reduced manpower which will ultimately be demonstrated in an area where conventional longwall mining has been successful. 1.2 DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM 1.2.1 Why An Automated System The most obvious benefit of automation and remote control in a longwall mining system is the reduction of accidents consequent upon a reduced working force in the hazardous face areas. However, another important aspect of the problem is the skilled labor shortage which is being compounded by the need for vastly increased coal production. The United States coal mining industry had a working force of almost 600,000 miners in 1928 but was able to muster only 145,000 miners in 1970. The miners required to staff the additional working sections and the new mines necessary to meet our energy needs are simply not available. Only automation and remote control will permit a reduced work force with increased production by keeping the face equipment operating continuously.

This report describes investigations of the economic merits of multiple zone mining and beneficiation versus selective mining of altered Western phosphate rock. The same deposit was considered in both instances and it was assumed that the grade of selectively mined ore was comparable to the grade of the concentrate from beneficiation. The beneficiating scheme used for the investigation was one proved by small continuous circuit operation. All economic factors were found to favor multiple zone mining plus beneficiation. Capital requirements and production costs were lower, and production life of the deposit was extended 4.5 times. The concentrate from beneficiation would be a uniform high-quality feed for acidulation and would be low in stable metallic oxide (R203) content. Such a feed would permit improved plant operating control, and the low R203 would promote more rapid filtration and minimize sludge formation in the phosphoric acid. With the proposed treatment, the concentrate produced by flotation from this deposit would cost about 1.5 times as much per ton as the concentrate produced by classification sizing. Therefore, inclusion of a flotation step in treatment schemes requires an economic analysis for each ore deposit.

Noise control of existing pneumatic drills is difficult and runs into cost, performance and weight penalties. A need exists for a start-from-scratch approach for quiet pneumatic rock drills. The designs based on Leavell Principles which has been successfully used in demonstrating a quiet and vibration free paving breaker, is the concept chosen here. This report shows the feasibility of a quiet stoper for drilling roof bolt holes in coal mines. The work is directly applicable to pneumatic percussive rock drills. The report shows an oscillator based on patented Leavell concepts which results in a vibration free tool and noiseless exhaust. Dynamics of the oscilator is analyzed. Independant rotation of drill rod is provided by an air motor (screw expander) and flushing of cuttings is accomplished by an air ejector in a compact lower housing. The feasibility of no exhaust noise, low drill machine noise, and vibration free casing is discussed.

In 1990, the Bureau of Mines (BOM) conducted a mineral investigation of the mines and prospects in the East Mojave National Scenic Area (EMNSA). San Bernardino County. California During field work. BOM identified 701 mines and prospects in EMNSA for which the geology, mineral resources, and mining history were compiled and summarized. Analytical results for 1.188 rock samples collected are tabulated. Total value of identified resources in EMNSA is $5.0 billion. Twenty-four mines and prospects were deemed profitable under current economic conditions. Development could generate considerable economic benefits to San Bernardino County. Potential economic benefits from mining the deposits were evaluated under the following access restrictions for EMNSA: 1) fun access, 2) HR 3460, and 3) S 11/HR 780. Under the full access scenario, cumulative mine revenues are $3.0 billion, cumulative personal earnings at mines and supporting industries are $0.94 billion, and annual jobs at mines and supporting industries are 2,379. Under HR 3460, mine revenues, personal earnings, and annual jobs are $2.9 billion. $0.88 billion, and 2,165, respectively. Under S 11/HR 780, mine revenues, personal earnings, and annual jobs are $1.0 billion, $0.32 billion, and 936, respectively.

"INTRODUCTION Byproduct-coke manufacture is one of our country's most essential in¬dustries; its importance was strikingly accentuated by the demands of World War II. This paper reviews recent progress in various phases of byproduct-coke operations for the production of metallurgical coke particularly that used as blast-furnace fuel.In the early days of the by-product-coke industry in the United States high-grade bituminous coking coals, both high-volatile or gas coal and low-volatile Pocahontas coal, were plentiful, and the selection and mixing of coals for coke-oven use were minor problems.The demands of World War I for the production of iron, steel, and coke aroused and stimulated new interest in the investigation of the reserves, characteristics, and properties of our coking coals. During that war the increased demand for coke reached a critical stage, and the shortage of high-grade coking coals necessitated the use of cols of inferior quality and of different coking characteristics than those previously used.The period of prosperity following World War I brought much progress and development in the by-product-coke industry. Methods of testing coal and coke were improved. The search for satisfactory coking coals was continued, and construction and design of byproduct ovens were improved."

This report describes two goniometers that, by simple manipulation, can be used to ascertain the attitude of a joint, vein, or fracture plane observed on the planar projection of a borehole photograph taken with an NX borehole camera of the type developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. One goniometer was designed to interpret photographs taken in vertical drill holes and the other for photographs taken in inclined drill holes. In practice, several measurements are made on each photograph with the goniometer. These data are then substituted into mathematical equations, which are derived in this report and the attitudes of fracture planes are determined.
