The three-dimensional finite element technique combined with the progressive failure approach was utilized to simulate stress distributions in a mine section which occur in response to a longwall mining operation. Due to the availability of the Cray supercomputer, a large-scale three-dimensional finite element model was developed for the analysis. The Hoek-Brown failure criterion, which describes a realistic behavior of rock masses, was used for the simulation of progressive failure. A comparison of calculated and monitored stresses in the mine has shown that the model gives a good representation of stresses in the mine structure.

"A wind tunnel was designed to examine air flow, heat transfer and layering near an active fire at a working face. This tunnel simulates an active entry in an underground coal mine including an attached cross-cut of similar dimensions. A steel rectangular duct 1 ft. (0.305 m) tall, 3 ft. (0.914 m) wide and 10 ft. (3.05 m) long composes the main body of the tunnel and represents a mine entry. Air flow is generated by an exhausting centrifugal fan attached to one end of the crosscut. This fan was sized to supply air velocities based on Froude scaling. A 6 in. (15.25 cm) propane burner is used to simulate fires of various heat release rates at the working face. Thermocouples are used to map heat layering in the tunnel. Ports are installed for the introduction of tracer gases into and from sampling the system. Barometric, differential pressure, and temperature sensors are also included to monitor environmental conditions. Details about the design and testing of the system are presented including an overview of how the tunnel was scaled to accurately represent fire and flow phenomena. Finally, the proposed use of the tunnel for better understanding of mine fire phenomena and prevention is given. INTRODUCTION Fires in underground mines have been a concern since the dawn of mining. While technological advancements, regulations and best practices have improved both fire detection and firefighting techniques, mine fires continue to represent high risk events. From 2006 through 2015, fires accounted for 1.06% of fatalities in underground coal mines and 0.85 percent of fatalities in all underground mines in the United States (U.S. Department of Labor, 2006 to 2015). In addition to the risk of loss of life, mine fires can cause millions of dollars in equipment damages and lost production revenue. Extensive research has been conducted on how fires occur and spread in underground mines. In addition to testing conducted by government agencies such as the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the National Institute for Safety and Health (NIOSH) (e.g.(Liming, 2006), researchers like Verakis and Dalzell (Verakis, 1988) and Lowndes, et. al. (Lowndes, 2004) have furthered this field by studying ignitions and propagation of conveyor belt fires. While the studies of belt fires in mines are extensive, studies focused on fires at the working face are few in number. The particularly confined space and limited access to a working face, coupled with less robust, temporary ventilation controls create a unique environment that warrants special attention. Separate from studies on mine fires, the use of tracer gases to characterize flow patterns in normal mining ventilation is well established. In 1982, Timko and Thimons (Timko, 1982) outlined current and future applications of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). However, little experimentation has been conducted to study specifically how tracer gases might be used to evaluate active mine fires and the fires’ effect on the surrounding mine environment (e.g.(Lindsay, 2014). In order to better understand the dynamics of smoke layering from a fire in an enclosed space, a small-scale apparatus was designed to map smoke layering and to examine other aspects of fire behavior at a working face. In addition to studying smoke flow around an active fire, experiments will be conducted using tracer gases in order to determine how they might be used to evaluate an underground fire."

The national Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health, Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multi-element ground support system, it is necessary to know when the material has developed a compressive strength of approximately 1 MPa (145 psi), the early threshold for safe re-entry of miner and machine into shotcreted mine workings at this value, the material has developed enough strength to be self-supporting and to allow for installation of other ground support components that require drilling of the shotcrete layer without degradation. NIOSH researchers have developed methods and portable test equipment to measure shotcrete strength on site in the first six hours after application using a partial beam test standard, a STM C 116-90 (1990). These advances were demonstrated in tests with five commercially available shotcrete mixes, sprayed as dry shotcrete using field expedient methods and equipment. The strength values from these tests allowed for real-time identification of the early strength threshold and were consistent with strengths reported using laboratory-type equipment. Measuring the early strength properties of shotcrete directly at the mine site can improve mine safety by identifying appropriate re-entry times and providing a convenient means of conducting on site quality control during shotcrete applications.

The findings of this NIOSH research for determining shotcrete early strength can improve mine safety by providing a method for determining initial site specific material property values to be used for design and as a means to conduct on-site quality control and monitoring during production.

Mining operations have long been accused of causing a disruption to local, domestic and agricultural water supplies. More recently, concern for water supplies has increased with the advent of high-extraction mining techniques, namely longwall mining. Theoretically, any water bearing zone in the overburden above a high-extraction mining operation may be affected by mining. In some cases, a confining bed may be fractured causing a loss of water to a particular zone. In other cases, increased fracture permeability may enhance the ability of an aquifer to transmit and deliver water. Unfortunately, only a limited amount of studies have been conducted that characterize hydrologic changes and also quant1fythe magnitude of mining-induced subsidence. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted such a study at a mine site located in Greene County, PA. A total of 8 water wells were drilled and hydrologic parameters such as specific capacity, transmissivity and well yield were determined both before and after mining. Electronic water level recorders were installed on each water well to provide continuous observations of water level fluctuations.

"Within the framework of the European project NeTTUN, the Laboratory of Civil Engineering and Building Sciences of ENTPE in Lyon (France) is in charge of a large experimental campaign to investigate the impact of tunneling on neighbouring piled structures. For this study, an original reduced-scale (around 1:10) physical model of EPBS is used. This ""1g"" laboratory model is able to reproduce the main features of the excavation method. For this new experimental program, the miniature EPBS advances inside a large tank filled with a model soil (dry sand), in which instrumented piles were pre-installed. In this paper, the authors describe briefly the original 3D device and present results concerning the impact of tunneling on a single pile located above the tunnel. Different tunneling face pressure are studied in connection with the practice. Machine parameters, pile solicitations and stress-strain behavior of the soil mass monitored under real time conditions are discussed. INTRODUCTION When tunnels are constructed in urban areas, they often come close to pre-existing structures, such as pile foundations. Perturbations of tunnel construction on these neighbouring structures must be considered during design and construction of the tunnel. Ground movements due to tunnelling may induce bending moments, lateral and vertical loads, settlements and lateral deflections in the piles, which may lead to structural damage or failure of the piles or the supported structure. The interaction between piles and a tunnel in construction is a complex three dimensional problem. To date, several experimental approaches have been carried out to analyse the effects of tunnelling on piled foundations (Bezuijen et al., 1994, Loganathan et al., 2000, Jacobsz et al. 2004, Lee and Basset, 2006, Marshall and Mair, 2011, ). These different studies carried out in the laboratory on 1 g or centrifuged models aim at a better understanding of tunnel - piles interaction and a quantification of the influence of each dominating parameter on the structural responses. Parameters like foundation type (single pile, group of piles) and geometry, relative tunnel – pile position, volume loss induced by tunnelling, ground characteristics, pile loading history were considered. However, most of these experiments were carried out under plane strain conditions by modelling the volume loss due to tunnel excavation by decreasing the tunnel diameter or the radial support pressure. As a result, these models do not adequately account for the variations of settlements both in the longitudinal and the transverse direction, which can induce significant flexional and torsional effects on the structures. These effects are particularly critical and detrimental in the case of historical monuments."

Improved desulfurization of Illinois coals is a widely Shared research goal. The development of a physical cleaning strategy and the results of a project to demonstrate technical and economic feasibility of producing a low sulfur compliance coal from the Illinois Basin are reported. Processing flowsheets to extend or retrofit existing preparation plants are considered. Comminution, conventional and micro-bubble flotation, and selective agglomeration technologies were investigated to maximize pyrite rejection while maintaining high product yield. Batch bench scale testing was followed by continuous pilot plant studies. Parameters included grind size, flow rates, pulp density, aeration, agitation, and reagent dose. An economic evaluation of targeted processes is included.

Salar basins in the Andean Highlands of Northern Chile contain ground-water resources which could be used to satisfy requirements for the mineral industry in the region. Salars occur in arid zones; average precipitation is about 200 millimeters per year at altitudes of about 4,000 meters, and average annual evaporation is two meters or more. The salar basins are hydrogeologic sinks where water flows from recharge areas at the margins of the basins to discharge areas at the salt encrusted salar at the lowest point of the basin floor. Groundwater circulation occurs principally in the alluvial and fractured bedrock aquifers. Results of pumping tests for exploration and production water wells indicate a range in maximum sustained pumping yield of 62 to 126 liters per second, and where abundantly fractured, ignimbrite comprises the most prolific aquifer. Chemical quality of groundwater is good. Long-term pumping from properly located production wells in the salar basins would result in lowering of groundwater levels and salvage of water in areas where groundwater is lost via evaporation.

Barrick Goldstrike Inc.'s Betze/Post Open Pit is located at the north end of the Carlin Trend, in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S.A. (see location Map, Figure 1). About ten open pit gold mines exist on the trend, which strikes northwesterly, through the north end of Eureka County and into Elko County. The final Betze/Post Pit configuration is shown in Figure 2, Pit Configuration. The final pit will be about 2450m long by 1550m wide, elongate in a west-northwesterly direction. The pit straddles the Barrick/Newmont property boundary. The highest elevation of the pit perimeter is 1800m at the south wall, with the east end pit bottom elevation at 1200m.

This paper describes the implementation of specialized software in mine planning at the Cleveland-Cliffs' managed Empire Mine on Michigan's Marquette Iron Range. The application puts together years of mining experience on the eastern end of the Marquette Range beginning in the early 1960's. The Empire Mine, in its thirty-fifth year of production, uses the software to model a complex and highly variable low grade magnetite ore body, capturing the economics of mining and processing to the final product. With special attention given to geostatistical methods, the software is used for all geologic modeling, ore reserve estimation, ore control, pit design and short and long range planning.

AMAX Coal Company's Belle Ayr coal dryer is the first industry attempt to commercialize sub-bituminous coal drying which has been the subject of laboratory and pilot plant tests for almost two decades. This paper presents the historical background, construction, start-up and operation of this adaption of fluidized bed coal drying technology to Powder River Basin coal. The flowsheet and operational problems encountered during plant start-up are discussed together with general material balance and product quality.

"INTRODUCTION The expansion of the Suez Canal, which runs between the Mediterranean and Red Sea, is at the top of Egypt’s economic agenda. The £8 billion development plan includes a new channel alongside the existing one which will double the number of ships able to pass each day and several tunnels to connect the Sinai peninsula to the main part of Egypt. The Egyptian government ordered three new tunnels under the Suez Canal in the area of Port Said as part of the Canal Region Development Plan. The three tunnels will contribute to the North Sinai expansion, helping to create a vast industrial zone and completing the coastal road extension from Rafah to Nuewiba. Two of these three tunnels will be allocated for roads and the third for railway traffic. A further part of the Suez Canal development mega project are an additional six tunnels in the area of Ismailia and Suez. The focus of this paper is on the two road tunnels in Port Said and will give an overview of the project and the challenges encountered regarding the technical complexity and tight time schedule both in its design and execution. PROJECT OVERVIEW The tunnels will be built in the area of Port Said (see Figure 1) which is the most northern part of the Suez Canal.The road alignment connects the Port Fuad Road in the east bank of the Suez Canal to the Port Said-Ismailia highway in the west bank with a dual carriageway section. Each of the carriageways has two lanes. The bored diameter of the 2.8 km long road tunnels is 13.050 m and will be driven with two Mix-Shield TBMs. The distance between the two tunnel axes is planned with 42.5 m (discussion about a reduction are ongoing). The width of the Suez Canal is around 340 m at upper level and around 170 m at the bottom. During the TBM drive, three main geological layers are expected. Below a depth of around 40 m in a very soft clay layer, a dense to silty sand layer is predicted. Within the sand layer another silty hard clay is expected in different depths with variable thickness. After finishing the excavation of the road tunnels, the same TBM will be used for the railway tunnel. The lowest points of the road tunnels will be located 59 m below the surface (tunnel invert to surface) and only 18 m of ground cover exists between the tunnel crown and the Suez Canal invert. Minimum ground cover over the tunnel crown is approximately nine meters at the tunnel portals."

Cortez Gold Mines, the United States' third largest primary producer of gold, commenced continuous operations on January 10, 1969. The decision to proceed to production was made in March of 1968 and construction of the mill and stripping operations for the pit began in April and July, respectively. Anomalous conditions on the slope of Mt. Tenabo along the Roberts Mountain thrust fault zone were discovered by the U.S.G.S. while conducting geochemical surveys in the old Cortez silver district. Following the discovery of gold an intensive program of drilling was organized. Drilling outlined an orebody with 3.5 million tons of ore averaging 0.28 ounces of gold per ton. It was on the basis of this reserve that a 1700 t. p.d. cyanide plant was designed. Needless to say, with such a limited ore reserve, economies in design and construction would have to be observed. Cortez Gold Mines is a joint venture with American Exploration & Mining Co., The Bunker Hill Company, Vernon F. Taylor, Jr., and Webb Resources, Inc. , as partners. The long and arduous process of bringing aggregate produced in Mexico to the Gulf Coast of the United States really began in the 1970s when the first exploratory trips were taken by Vulcan's geologists. It was not until the middle of the 1980s that all of the elements of the project seemed favorable and the largest capital investment in Vulcan's history was given the green light. The history of the project will be covered along with a discussion of the role that market forecasting played in the process. Is this the first of many or a once in a lifetime project? In July 1987, Vulcan and its joint venture partner broke ground in Mexico for a world-class limestone quarry and crushed stone production facility. This project is the largest ever undertaken by Vulcan's Construction Materials Group, with a total cost of over 200 million dollars -a cost shared equally by Vulcan and its joint venture partner, Ingenieros Civiles Associados, or ICA, a diversified Mexican company which is also the largest construction firm in Latin America.

"Construction of the largest desalinization plant in the Americas has commenced in northern Chile. It is part of a several billion dollar expansion at a copper mine whose operations nearly stopped due to the challenge of securing a reliable source of water from the Pacific Ocean in a safe and environmentally sound manner. This paper discusses the risk management, design and construction of a quadruple chamber intake and outfall shaft, high capacity pump station, three 7m diameter vertically drilled marine shafts and three subsea tunnels constructed through challenging Andean hard-rock geology. The three 2.5m diameter subsea microtunnels are being mined with vertical curves through variable quality rock 30 meters beneath the ocean and retrieved in the wet from the 7m diameter marine shafts. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The battle for securing the rights to a constant water supply is a worldwide issue and nowhere is that more evident than the Atacama Desert of Chile, the world’s driest place with areas of the desert that have not seen rainfall in recorded history. The Atacama Desert also happens to be home to some of the world’s largest ore deposits which require huge amounts of water to extract and process. What available water there is comes from three main sources: deep seated wells, glacial water from the Andes Mountains, and desalinated water. Vying for water from wells and glacial streams and lakes are numerous agricultural and domestic facilities in the valleys surrounding the Atacama Desert. Environmental regulations and legal rulings have limited the amount of “natural” source water which can be used for mining purposes. Desalination plants are a known solution for combating water scarcity, albeit a costly one. The total estimated cost of constructing this desalination plant is over $3B USD, which will include a 2500lps capacity and an approximately 118km pipeline from the coast up to the mine located in the Andes. The overall scope of the project includes design, procurement, and construction packages for the 2500lps desalination plant including the seawater reverse osmosis plant, water conveyance to the mine, power transmission, the reservoir and the marine works package which forms the basis of this paper. Discrete Element Method (DEM) software has been successfully used to simulate various machine/soil interactions and provide insight for industries such as mining and bulk material processing. This paper will investigate typical calibration techniques used in particle models for DEM simulation and physical calibration experiments with soft ground TBM cutting tools to incorporate parameters such as tool drag forces that contribute to required TBM torque. With a well calibrated DEM model, it is expected that TBM simulation results will be more meaningful and provide better insight into TBM performance, power requirements, cutting tool placement, and overall cutter head design.

The use of the underground space has been a recurring issue in human history, whereas the reasons for building subsurface structures have changed over time. In the decades to come, the world will be marked by a variety of underground projects never before seen. This paper describes a series of characteristic challenges of designing and building underground freight transportation systems, with reference to the example of Cargo sous terrain, a privately funded underground logistics project in Switzerland. It provides an overview of contracting practices that allow these challenges to be addressed with success.

Open pit mines are getting deeper with time and transportation expenses are increasing because of the increasing haulage distance. In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) is getting popular in deeper open pit mines as a suitable alternative to truck haulage because it offers a lower operating cost due to shorter haulage distance and less truck requirement. Semi-mobile in-pit crusher, currently the most popular IPCC system, is relocated every two to five years and the short-term plan needs to be updated accordingly. Short-term planning with IPCC is an area of research that has not been explored extensively yet and hardly any model can generate short-term extraction sequence considering an IPCC in place. This research work proposes a mixed integer programming model to generate short-term production plan within a time horizon of 12 months. The objective of the model is to optimally allocate shovels to minimize cost of material handling and maximize revenue subject to meeting plant requirement, maximum allowable tonnage variation and IPCC location constraints to achieve production and NPV targets set by strategic plan. The proposed model has been implemented in a hypothetical case study for verification. The comparison of results between scenarios with and without IPCC is expected to justify the use of IPCC in large open pit mines from a short to medium term perspective. A semi-mobile IPCC system with one relocation is considered in the case study.

Tunnel inspections have traditionally been carried out manually by inspectors writing up observations and taking photos of defects. The results from the inspection and the defects observed are dependent upon the rigor of the inspectors and may be subject to repeatability and consistency issues and is often time consuming with elevated health and safety risks. This paper will discuss work that is being carried out in developing and implementing an innovative hardware and software solution integrating machine learning to automate the process of capturing objective tunnel condition information, offering cost and programme savings as well as health and safety improvements

The Rondout Bypass Tunnel in New York has two access shafts. The upper sections of the shafts are lined with steel pipe to resist a substantial net internal water head . Initial design included a ¾-inch-thick cement mortar lining (CML) for all three components. Because of concerns with CML application on large-diameter pipes, the protective lining was redesigned for shotcrete application. This paper discusses the details of that design, mock-ups, and shotcrete application.
