In the crushing and grinding of metallics for beneficiation, the sizing is normally done to liberate the metals or sulphides for further processing to improve recoveries of the basic metals or minerals. The objective is to reduce the ore in size through various closely controlled stages to that degree of fineness which gives an economic liberation of valuable mineral, but which avoids as much as possible the production of sliming fractions. A different philosophy applies to the crushing and grinding of Gypsum. Our requirements normally demand controlled grinding and/or crushing of the material not only to a fineness suitable for further processing of the mineral into end products, but to produce various sizes of material which are them- selves saleable products. The majority of our tonnage ultimately ends up in stucco for Wallboard. Therefore, our mineral reduction is normally designed toward this end, but it is done in a manner that permits drawing off inter- mediate products to meet various Customer requirements. This forces us into compromises at times in our equipment installations, and our equipment must sometimes be more versatile and complex than we would like it to be. We try to process our basic rock, Gypsum, for the most efficient size reduction. We market 5 to 6 different sizes intermediate to the end product, which generally is the fineness of material to be used for stucco for Wallboard, and we do this with controlled crushing, grinding and sizing cycles of the material. To summarize, we use a different philosophy of crushing and grinding than the metallic field which uses comminution or crushing and grinding to improve recovery, whereas we choose our equipment to crush and grind primarily for product performance.

One need be neither an historian nor technologist to recognize that activi¬ties related to the conversion of coal to other usable energy forms have been active for nearly fifty years. The degree of such activity and its evolution to significant commercial proportions has, however, fluctuated widely with world circumstance. For the past decade there has existed both a consistent technology evolution effort in classic R & D proportions, and a mainstream commercial acti¬vity but in rather modest proportions when viewed from the vantage point of world energy needs. But the chain of events wherein it became increasingly obvious that we were in energy trouble irrespective of world politics, spurred alternative energy source activities in the fossil fuels areas. The oil embargo of 1973-1974 made the obvious even more so and provided additional emphasis for the need of such alternatives. Yet the preponderance of these added expenditures and activities (with one notable exception which is the subject of this discussion) has been focused on the intended identification of the best or ultimate process by means of analytical and modest empirical means, whereas our circumstance dictates a bold, higher-risk effort to prove the viability of coal conversion as an industry on a real-time, real-size, real-economics basis. With such proof on hand, industry demands in all related areas will provide the stimulus, motivation and environment for all processes. There is both need and room for many who will compete for a meaningful segment of this new industry which can grow at a rate never seen before in our growth history. The single program in the world today oriented specifically toward the goal of proof of industry viability is the Energy Research and Development Administration's CBF (clean boiler fuels) Program for which COALCON is proud to be the prime contractor.

"INTRODUCTION Over the past twenty years this Linear-Regression Modeling has become widely accepted for ensuring limits are not exceeded at a site, using the Scaled-Distance variable. In today’s industry, numerous equations are present for different scenarios, geologic environments, hole sizes, and numerous other factors with an emphasis on site-specific equations developed for all major projects; however, underground blasting applications have not been analyzed to a great degree of detail. Without previous knowledge this puts underground blasting operations into a guessing-game to ensure that vibration levels are not exceeded. This paper will review two recent projects that have been worked on by the authors and linear-regression models that were used with both burn cuts and stope blasts. BLAST VIBRATIONS MODELING The first major research project conducted in the United States on blasting vibration was Bulletin 442 (Thoenen & Windes, 1942) which looked at the relationship between blasting and blast vibrations in the fall of 1940. This study examined numerous blasts and began the investigation into topics such as damping, structural damage from vibrations, frequency dependency on vibration, resonance vibration, delayed blasting, and numerous other factors. Bulletin 442 had two major conclusions which are: 1. The vibration from a blast can be predicted with a relationship of size of the shot and distance to the structure (now known as scaled distance) 2. “The vibration of a structure at resonance does not in itself cause damage because of the restraining effect of damping inherent in the building” (Thoenen & Windes, 1942) Due to the increase of blasting near homes and busier areas the USBM commissioned an additional study to further develop a few of the topics covered in Bulletin 442; this study would go on to be published as RI 6561 (Duvall, Johnson, Meyer, & Devine, 1963) with the study looking into delayed blasting and the relationship between charge weight, distance, and peak particle velocity of the blast. Since the beginnings of, the human struggle for survival and improvement, mining has been one of the basic endeavors of life. Until relatively recent times it was classed as an art. Now we are at work trying to, raise mining to the level of an engineering science where it belongs if we are to prosper. It should be self-evident that this goal can be attained only through industrial progress: based on education and research. It is true that our industry, left to itself, will develop a few new ideas and techniques through the years. However, we mining' engineers are relatively few in number compared to the other disciplines, and the rate of our improvement by such "accidental" discoveries is simply tooslow to keep pace with the rest of our technical civilization. It will be evident in the remarks that follow, that the rapid development of mining education, research, and the industry are extremely interdependent, and will be largely controlled by the amount of cooperation, support, and cross-fertilization that can be developed among all three.

The Cresson Deposit is located in central Colorado within the historic Cripple Creek Mining District. The deposit has moved from its initial discovery in 1990 to full production in less than five years (current reserve nearly two million ounces). This accomplishment required a great deal of cooperative teamwork between the exploration, development, permitting and corporate groups. Nowhere was this cooperation more evident than in the construction of the geologic block model. The detailed modeling of gold and its metallurgical characteristics formed the foundation upon which critical financial and design decisions were based.

Electric utility response to certain amendments of the Clean Air Act has resulted in a production of several types of alkaline coal combustion byproducts. Alkaline combustion byproducts are gaining increasing usage for acid mine drainage mitigation as research leads to a better understanding of their beneficial applications. Since January of 1997, Mettiki Coal Corporation has been injecting alkaline flue gas desulfurization material from Virginia Power's Mt. Storm Unit #3 wet limestone scrubber into abandoned portions of the active Mettiki mine. This paper provides an overview of the key design, transportation, regulatory, and environmental issues faced in the project.

The need to feed an established talc mill from a crude are source located closer to the mill prompted the drilling in 1986 of a previously mapped talc-carbonate deposit. This talc-bearing rock had never been considered as a potential source of crude talc are because of the high carbonate content and other deleterious minerals that were observed in outcrops. Selective mining, in-pit grade control and creative processing has allowed this deposit to be developed into an orebody. By definition, an orebody has to be a source of positive cash flow. With industrial minerals, this is determined as much by market acceptance as by are tenor.

"Foreword by Emily SarverAssistant professor, Mining and Minerals Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VAThe Mineral Processing Division hosted its fifth Student Poster Contest during the 2014 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Salt Lake City, UT – and, by all accounts, it was a huge success! This year, the contest more than doubled in numbers of individual entries and schools represented. A total of 30 students participated, including 23 graduates and 7 undergraduates, representing 13 US and international institutions: Colorado School of Mines, Michigan Tech, Missouri University of Science and Technology, Montana Tech, New Mexico Tech, South Dakota School of Mines, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Virginia Tech, West Virginia University, Autonomous University of Chihuahua (Mexico), UNAL Medellin (Colombia), University of British Columbia (Canada). In addition to constructing their posters, students submitted abstracts and gave short oral presentations highlighting their research. Based on tallied scores from all three components of the contest, the judging panel selected 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners at the undergraduate and graduate levels, which were announced during the MPD Luncheon on February 26.In the undergraduate division, University of Utah’s Lucas Pich was awarded the 1st place prize for his poster “Solid-liquid mixing studies in lab-scale flotation tank using electrical resistance tomography.” His extended abstract is included in this issue of Minerals & Metallurgical Processing. Joshua Chidester, also of Utah, won 2nd place for his poster presenting “Evaluation of detectors for radiotracer RTD measurement by MCNP.” And Lucas Rojas-Mendoza, of UNAL Medellin, took 3rd place for his poster on “Preg-robbing in Colombian gold ores.”In the graduate division, 1st place went to Caelen Anderson, of the Colorado School of Mines, who also placed in this contest in 2012 and 2013! The 2nd and 3rd place prizes were awarded to Jacob McDonald and Joseph Halt, respectively, both of Michigan Tech. Extended abstracts describing the work of these up-and-coming researchers are also included in this issue.The 2014 Contest was chaired by Emily Sarver (Virginia Tech) and Lisa Schlink (Freeport-McMoran Copper and Gold, Inc.). In addition to products available from private vendors, many useful programs are developed at universities - in fact, many of these programs led the way to commercial development. Other projects are assigned to consultants with backgrounds in system design and mining. Both types of development have led to programs that can be acquired for the cost of a tape or disk. The restructuring of mining operations in Valea Jiului coal basin imposed by the transation to the market economy calls for an increased coal production. Under the circumstances, the role of drainage networks grows ever more important. The paper describes an original mathematical model and software developed on its basis, with enables the ventilation engineer to assess the configurations of different systems, as well as to test their reliability and prognose their future performance before conceiving another methane drainage system or changing the existing one. The paper also includes the underlying principles of an optimization program for methane drainage networks, which will enable the detection of the optimal methane drainage system, both from a technical and an economic point of view.

Silver is an economically important component of many complex, massive sulfide ores. Current beneficiation for these ores is almost entirely by flotation. Silver recovery often is low, but little is known about the flotation behavior of the silver-bearing minerals. Floatability studies were conducted using silver-bearing tetrahedrite and lead-zinc ore. The effects of xanthate collector concentration, conditioning time, potentiostatic control of the mineral potential, and pH on mineral floatability were evaluated. The floatability of the silver-bearing minerals was shown to depend on collector concentration and mineral potential. The effect of controlling mineral potential during the flotation process is discussed.

"While wearable technology has been garnering attention in the consumer market, enterprise and industry have just begun exploring its potential applications. Since February 2014, Motion Metrics International has been working in collaboration with Vandrico Solutions Inc. to apply wearable technology to improve productivity and safety in the mining industry.This article discusses the value proposition of using wearable technology to deliver critical notifications in mining. The advantages and disadvantages of various form factors are explored. The challenges, both specific to mining and in general to wearable technology, are defined. Finally, the concept of MetricsGear, the first wearable technology platform developed for mining by Motion Metrics International in collaboration with Vandrico Solutions Inc., is described. MetricsGear is designed to notify the user with minimal distraction to keep the user focused on his or her primary task and aware of mission-critical events. This focus and awareness allows the user to work more efficiently and safely. The mining process consists of a series of intricate stages, where certain events or conditions in one stage can have a huge impact on other stages. The notification of these critical events or conditions is vital for ensuring the overall efficiency of the mining process. Critical notifications can be classified as two types: timecritical events and contextual information. Time-critical events are situations where a timely response from a responder can have a significant impact on seizing an opportunity or mitigating cost. Some human-computer interaction (HCI) experts classify notification types based on the interruption, reaction and comprehension (IRC) framework. Time-critical events are classified to have high interruption, high reaction and low comprehension due to their urgency. The responder should have just enough information to identify the crisis and react as soon as possible (Chow, 2014). For example, when a tooth is lost during shovel operation, it is necessary to recover the missing tooth before it jams the primary crusher. The consequence of missing this critical time period is a jammed crusher that can cause the mine to be out of production until the jammed tooth is extracted (Baumann, 2013). In this case, the responder only needs to see an image to confirm if the tooth is missing and information to identify which equipment and when the tooth went missing (Fig. 1)."

The terms environment and environmental control, when used in today's context, generally imply to the average individual, something to do with pollution and pollution control. These latter terms, likewise, impart visions of fouled air and dirty water attributable largely to the industrial segment of American society. We have been conditioned, by various means, over the past ten years to equate environ¬mental control with pollution control. We have been trained to think of industrial environmental control programs as efforts conceived only to comply with one or more of the recently imposed pollution control regulations. Almost automatically we; approach consideration of environmental control with a degree of pessimism that is we assume that pollution prompted the control program. It is the purpose of this discussion to demonstrate that environmental control. at least as it exists and has existed within the crushed stone industry, involves far more than simply control or reduction of air and water pollution. It involves a dedication to the enhancement of each of the several "mini-environments" which together comprise the total world surrounding any given crushed stone operation. Environmental control, exercised properly, is an optimistic, constructive, forward-looking, enhancing type of activity. It is a function which has been, and should continue to be, willingly and expectantly undertaken by informed management personnel. In short, environmental control. is an activity from which both industry and society can and should benefit.

They are not as urgent as time-critical events, but provides more detailed and informative information to assist the receiver. For example, when a shovel’s worn tooth is predicted to require replacement soon, a notification to a GET technician can help him or her schedule a pre-emptive replacement of the tooth in an already planned maintenance to prevent having to reactively schedule another one when the tooth is critically worn. This helps reduce the amount of equipment downtime to maximize production (Baumann, M. 2013). In this case, the receiver will look at the information when he has a moment to spare to get a quick forecast, and make use of this information as needed (see Figure 2)."

Project scheduling is a deterministic technique utilizing single estimates of activity durations. In reality, activity durations are stochastic and can be better represented by probability distributions. This paper describes the development and utilization of a project scheduling simulation which combines analytical scheduling with stochastic activity durations. The purpose is to provide a method to analyze the sequencing of mining production processes and predict the effect of any planned changes. The simulation is demonstrated through realistic examples, such as longwall face-to-face transfer sequencing and the effect of varying advance rates on longwall development sections. Statistical data, to make more informed production decisions, are generated in the form of project activity/path criticality and project duration distributions.

Advantages of water recovery and environmental sustainability are the driving forces for paste as an alternative to conventional thickening and the slurry pond. It is a common observation that objects having, different; temperatures exchange energy by radiative transfer. The quantity of radiant energy emitted by an object is a definite function of its temperature. Therefore, a measurement of emitted radiation, by means of a calibrated radiometric instrument, provides a temperature measurement without contacting the emitting object. The physical laws describing radiant energy transfer and their application to remote temperature measurement form the substance of this paper. The energy radiated by bodies having temperatures up to 4000°C is largely in the infrared spectral region. The infrared spectral region is that part of the electro-magnetic spectrum having wavelengths longer than visible light and extending to the microwave region. The wave-lengths range from 0.7 micron (1 micron = 10-4 cm) to 1000 microns. In general, infrared radiometry deals, with the methods of measuring energy flux in the 1 to 15 micron region of the infrared spectrum.
