(written discussion *).-From a theo¬retical point of view the best method to maintain the cold junction at a constant temperature is by means of a pipe driven in the ground, to which the so-called cold-junction compensating leads are run, ;and of course there are many times and places where it can be successfully used. There are, however, several objections to this method. In the vicinity of any furnace there are apt to be underground flues for preheated air or gases, recuperators, water mains, etc., which will eliminate the probability of a constant temperature. These, of course, can be avoided by carrying the leads to distant locations known to be free, but this is not good practice because the so-called compensating leads have a rather high re¬sistance, which materially affects the accuracy of even the high resistance instruments, unless they are specially calibrated for it. Moreover, the cost of these long leads is almost prohibitive. A better way is to run short lengths of compensating leads to electrically heated constant¬ temperature boxes conveniently located near the furnace in a place that is of fairly uniform temperature. These boxes are on the market and can be procured at a cost that is approximately equal to the cost of 100 ft. of compensating leads. They can be connected to any power or lighting circuit and once set require very little care. One box will ac¬commodate a number of couples.

THE Tri-State zinc and lead-mining district is in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, the southeast corner of Kansas and the southwest corner of Missouri. The area throughout which active mining has been conducted is about 45 miles long and about 5 miles wide, extending northeasterly from Commerce, Okla., to Alba, Missouri. Although the lead ores were mined on a very small scale in the vicinity of Joplin, Mo., as early as 1848, nothing of any importance was done in the district until 1870, since when both mining and smelting have been prosecuted with considerable vigor. In the beginning the lead ores only were exploited, but within a few years extensive deposits of zinc ores were found and since that time the production of zinc ore has far exceeded that of lead. Both the surface and mineral rights in Missouri and Kansas were under individual ownership by the time ore was discovered. Although some of these rights were purchased by mining companies, most of the mining has been done under leases covering small areas, usually 40 acres, although in the past many leases were given on much smaller tracts. In Oklahoma most of the mineral land had been alloted by the Government to various Indian tribes and although the title to some of these lands had been acquired by various white men before the discovery of the rich Picher field, the title to most of the land has remained with the Indian tribes and the leasing of the mineral rights has been done by the Federal Government for the benefit of the Indians. The Indian allotments were of 200 acres each and some of the mining leases covered entire allotments, although many leases were granted for only 40 acres or even less.

Metallurgy was included with mining in the early curricula, two students who took the B.S. in mining engineering from the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania in 1863 wrote their graduation theses on the metallurgy of copper and zinc, respectively. Even after Columbia School of Mines established, in 1868, a separate curriculum leading to the Ph.B. degree in metallurgy, very few students elected it,* preferring to take the mining degree, since they received in its curriculum nearly all the metallurgical instruction they would have in the metallurgical curriculum. For many years a large proportion of the men who attained prominence in metallurgical enterprises had taken mining rather than metallurgical degrees. METALLURGY Clifton Sorby's study of thin sections of rocks under the micro- scope, beginning in 1850, and its subsequent development by Zirkel and others, had made microscopic petrography a recognized department of, geological research as early as 1873. It was inevitable that the idea of studying polished metal surfaces under the microscope by reflected instead of transmitted light would occur to investigators. Sorby himself did it in 1864, and Adolph Martens and Floris Osmond may be especially named ', among the many European workers who, by the late eighties, had so developed the necessary techniques that they were able to photograph polished metal surfaces at magnifications as high

GREATER depth of exploration drill holes and increasing cost of drilling have been principal factors in reviving interest on the Marquette Iron Range in controlled directional drill-hole deflection. This deflection is obtained by the application of the Hall-Row wedging technique. Modifications were made in the technique and equipment in the effort to simplify and strengthen the procedure. The practice is similar in many respects to the oil well type of deflection with a whipstock.

FOR a number of years up to the economic setback of the 1929-1931 period, the greatest proportional advances in the mineral industries in California were made among the substances in the nonmetallic groupings, particularly among the so-called industrial minerals and the salines. During the past year or two, although these have not regained the stride that marked their progress in the preceding decade, we can still record, -some new developments. California produces annually between 55 and' 60 different minerals on a commercial scale. DEVELOPMENTS in Venezuela during the past few months have been obscured by the hap-penings in Seminole and, more recently, those in southwest Texas. The question has been asked whether or not the opening of these vast new, prolific areas in the United States may not have depressed prices to a point so low as to give the developments in the Caribbean countries a serious setback. Nothing of the kind, however, has taken place, and on the contrary, there has been demonstrated the fact that Venezuela can profitably produce great quantities of oil under existing market conditions, and at the same time finance the foundation for further large expan-sion in the future. The three big factors which contribute to place Venezuela in a unique position and tend to insure the steady expansion of its oil industry are, in the order of their importance: I. Reasonable oil laws backed by a sound govern-ment, which comprehends the all-important fact that the country's prosperity depends on the prosperity of its industries, in a word, perceiving that the goose which lays the golden egg merits considerate treatment. II. The low cost of placing Venezuela oil on our At-lantic seaboard; not over $0.60 per barrel. III. The uniformly high average production per well and the large area of some of the individual pools. Under these conditions Venezuelan producers may be expected to continue steady and profitable ex-pansion even in the face of further market slumps. Their position is analogous to that of the low-cost copper producers, and unless artificial barriers, such as tariffs, come into play, Venezuela will steadily grow in importance. Within less than five years it should be second only to the United States among the oil-producing countries of the world.

PROSPECTING for oil in Spain has been going on for many years but only in a very haphazard way and without adequate geological or technical advice. Shallow wells have been drilled in several provinces but, for the most part, they have been doomed to failure from the beginning because of unfavorable geological locations, inadequate drilling equipment inexperienced operators, or lack of sufficient capital. Geologists seem to agree that the most favorable chances for commercial fields are in the northern part of Spain where the petroliferous Triassic beds underlie Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments. The prov-vinces of Santander, Burgos, Alava, Vizcaya, Navarra, and Guipuzcoa seem to offer the most promising localities. Several shallow wells have been drilled near Villamartin about 60 Km. northeast of Cadiz. One of these wells produced a small quantity of light oil but was never operated. The Spanish Government has been drilling on a well in this district for some time, using the Russian free-fall drilling system. The present depth is about 3000 meters. Several years ago the Compania Petrolera Franco-Espanola drilled a well to a depth of about 700 meters near Elorrio, province of Vizcaya. A diamond-core drill was used. The well was located on vertical Cretaceous beds near an igneous dike. The same company, in March, 1923, made a new location about 500 meters away from the first well and the same distance from the dike, in beds dipping about 80°, and is now drilling its No. 2 well. The last depth reported was about 200 meters.

ALTHOUGH Kennecott's orebody has long been outlined, it is still necessary to define further its limits. This mine, long an advocate of churn drill methods, recently supplemented its practice by using a diamond drill. So far, the diamond drill holes have been along the main canyon floor which traverses the mine area. This zone, highly fractured, is cut by numerous friable quartz veinlets encountered within the porphyry. These veinlets, formed by filling contracted porphyry fractures with hot, siliceous, mineral-bearing solutions, are often more highly mineralized than adjacent porphyry. They pulverize on contact, yielding only slight amounts of core.

THE most important non-metallic mineral industries from a tonnage standpoint are those that are allied with the construction industries and are engaged in handling sand and gravel, crushed stone, building stone, cement, lime and gypsum. The greatest problem facing a number of these industries at this time is over-production. They have experienced un- usual, and in some instances phenomenal, growth during recent years, stinlulated by extensive highway and building construction, but in some localities expansion of producing plants has far outstripped industrial needs. The cement industry is operating at about two- thirds capacity. Over-production tends toward price- cutting and unprofitable and interrupted operation, involving maintenance expenses for idle plants and disorganization of working forces. This condition has encouraged active efforts toward reducing production costs by the introduction of labor-saving equipment. Also, there is a tendency toward the location of manufacturing plants, wherever possible, near the centers of consumption rather than at points of production of raw materials. In order to reduce overhead expense, or for other reasons, many consolidations of companies into larger units have taken place. An economic study of conditions in these industries is highly desirable. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has taken one step forward in this direction in the issuance of Economic Paper 7, entitled "Economics of New Sand and Gravel Developments." Briefly, this report emphasizes the importance of making a thorough study of all the economic factors involved before undertaking new .enterprises.

SOME idea may be gained of the tremendous consumption of refractories by the open-hearth steel manufacturers from a statement made by A. T. Green at a meeting reported by T11.e Industrial Chemist of London, as follows: "At a very progressive steel plant in the Midlands, with a battery of five open-hearth furnaces working. twelve months and making 3000 tons of steel per week, the cost of refractories per ton of steel produced averages about $0.50 for the actual open- hearth casting and $0.12 for those operations incidental to the rolling of the metal." .These figures, when translated into the annual tonnage of steel, represent a very considerable expenditure.

PREPARED BY THE PETROLEUM DEPARTMENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE, LONDON THERE is very little to add to the report printed last year by the Institute as no developments of importance have taken place during the year. The following is a brief note on the various countries: GREAT BRITAIN The United Kingdom is a very small producer of petroleum, practically the whole output being derived from the oil-shale deposits of the Lothians of Scotland. The crude oil produced by distillation of shale in 1922 amounted to 180,000 tons, and the estimated production for 1923 is 207,000 tons. Because of the recent- decline in the market value of petroleum products, the production of oil, from shale can no longer be regarded as remunerative, and the future outlook for the industry is serious unless prices recover. As regards naturally occurring petroleum, the drilling operations undertaken by the Government have now been closed down. Out of the eleven borings undertaken only one, that at Hardstoft in Derbyshire, proved to be a producing well; its output was 125 tons in 1922 and 136 tons in 1923.

(communication to the Secretary *) :-Professor Hofman's paper brings the art up to . date. As I was one of the pioneers in this business, I beg to give the following incomplete data regarding my efforts in this line. In the year 1883, while I was in charge of the smelting-operations at Mine La Motte, Mo., there was at the concentrator an unusually large production of a middle product, locally called "iron," which carried considerable values in nickel and cobalt, and which it was desirable, for this reason, to treat by itself. The works could not spare a furnace for the purpose; and to handle this product I improvised a "roast-hearth " from an old " lead-hearth." This was a small cast-iron furnace of the usual construction, about 2 by 4 ft. in dimensions, with a hollow cast-iron back, through which the wind circulated before entering the tuyeres. I had a cast-iron grate made to fit this hearth, and placed it flush with the lip, or apron, and above the tuyeres. On this grate, which had round holes about 0.25 in. in diameter, and a total surface of about 20 by 40 in., I roasted the nickeliferous pyrite product; starting the fire with kindling, then adding charcoal, and then gradually feeding the sulphides with a shovel, so as to cover the fire, choke down blow-holes, and get an even bed. Blast at a pressure of 3 or 4 oz. was supplied by a fail-blower. When a cake of roasted material had formed, it was removed with a steel bar, or fork, to the lip of the furnace, and thence into a wheel-barrow.. The fine material which had remained unmelted, but very hot, on top of the cake would promptly ignite when the cake was broken up and removed. THE substance of this paper was prepared for the Seventh International Congress of Applied Chemistry, held in London, May, 1909, under the title, Some Developments in Blast-Roasting. In the absence of the author, a -short abstract of the paper was read, and the abstract only will appear in the proceedings of the congress. The present paper has been partly rewritten and considerably enlarged by information gained since the original was prepared ; also some illustrations have been added. Blast-roasting' is a generic term for the process of forcing air through finely-divided. metallic sulphide with the object of roasting and agglomerating in a single operation. At first the process was confined to a galena-concentrate ; lime, limestone, or gypsum was added, to serve both as a diluent to keep separate the particles of galena that they might be thoroughly oxidized, and as a flux that the partly-roasted ore might be agglomerated by the formation of some slag. Later it was extended to treat other metallic sulphides. The leading processes were the Huntington-Heberlein and the Savelsberg of Europe, and the Carmichael-Bradford of Australia. In the United States and Canada, the Huntington-Heberlein process has found application in some instances with galena-concentrates, for which it was originally intended; but this class of ore is not often treated alone, hence the process has had to be modified to suit conditions. The Savelsberg process has been transplanted to this country in about its original form. The Carmichael-Bradford is not used at present. The changes called for in the Huntington-Heberlein process to adapt it to the class of lead-bearing ores usually smelted have been the 1 A. S. THE subject assigned is rather a broad one but it, is doubtless expected that it will be dealt with as applying to metals and alloys and not to the ob-taining of metals from their ores. The liberty will further be taken of confining the matter discussed to copper and some of the copper alloys. Everyone is familiar with copper, at least everyone who attends the meetings of the A. I. M. E., so no gen-eral description of the metal is necessary. There are still to be recognized two classes of copper and each of these has some sub-divisions. The two general classes are electrolytic and fire-refined copper. Since there is some misunderstanding about these materials, definitions are in order. Electrolytic is just what the name implies. It may and it should be very pure but with high current densi-ties or very impure anodes, or both, impurities such as antimony, tellurium and lead may be carried over to the, cathode. Any one of these, or a combination in which they occur, are alike fatal to good working quali-ties in the resulting metal. Of course, these metals are not supposed to be deposited with copper, but slimes containing them may be 'occluded. in the deposited cop-per or held in rough cathodes if not washed with suffi-cient thoroughness.

IN both Sweden and England rapid progress is being made in metallurgical development, and the steel industry in both countries is distinctly on the mend. There has been some industrial trouble in Sweden in the iron mines and the wood pulp mills, but at the same time all the steel works have a sufficient stock of pig iron and ore to continue their operations for many months to come. Consequently the strike, unless long protracted, will not affect the output of steel in Sweden. Several of the steel manufacturers in Sweden, most notably Forsbacka and Sandviken, have been very suc-cessful recently in securing large orders, particularly from the continent, for ball-bearing steel, both hollow and solid. Whereas some years ago they ran into-se-rious competition with the German mills, the quality of the steel from these Swedish mills is such that they are now firmly established, and are selling some of the lead-ing manufacturers of bearings on the Continent, as well as automobile manufacturers. The secret of their success seems to lie in a better selection of ores, in more careful control of blast-fur-nace operations and better equipment. Rule of thumb in steel making is taboo, and strict reliance is placed on the laboratory. They are constantly experimenting, and metallurgists and chemists are sent to different countries for study and investigation. In their native ores they have, of course, a unique advantage in pos-sessing iron ores extraordinarily free from phosphorus. At Forsbacka, they are not content with the ordinary chemical analysis of the ingot; but also test the physical properties, as well as make metallographic investiga-tions for slag inclusions, segregations and oxides. In both England and Sweden they watch the nitrogen con-tent of the steel very carefully, a feature which does not appear in the ordinary analysis. In testing carbon, they do not use the color test, but employ an electric .induction device.

INTRODUCTION MINERAL deposits that have formed by the various geologic processes, when exposed to air and water at or near the surface of the earth, break down and form new compounds that are stable under surface conditions. Mechanical disintegration of the ores proceeds along with chemical alteration which generally is attended by oxidation, carbonation and hydration. Essentially all minerals are affected-silicates, carbonates, native metals, sulphides, etc. Where iron sulphides are present, oxidation yields sulphuric acid, and in the presence of oxygen and iron, ferric sulphate, a powerful solvent, is formed. Above the water level, in the vadose or shallow zone, both air and water are present. Below the water level air is excluded and that which is carried down with water is removed from the solution by reactions with reducing materials. Above the water level, solution is the pre-dominating process; below the water level, precipitation generally is equally important. In some deposits, particularly above the hater level, valueless materials are removed from the ore, leaving certain metals in a more highly concentrated state. This type of alteration, which has been termed negative enrichment, is common in ores of iron, aluminum, manganese and certain other metals. Some gold deposits, particularly those in which the environment is unfavorable for solution of gold, have been enriched near the surface by removal of material other than gold. Certain metals are readily dissolved in an oxidizing acid environment. These include copper, silver and, under certain conditions, gold. In the presence of iron sulphides, deposits of these metals are likely to be leached above the water level. The metals are carried downward to depths where air is excluded, and where they may be redeposited, generally below the water level. Such enrichment by addition of metals has been termed positive enrichment.

OUR early knowledge of history and geography attracted most of us to the mineral resources of South America. The romantic tales of the Spanish activities, which were curiously alluring, and Prescott's exceptional bi-Conquest histories-Mexico and Peru-no doubt fired our minds with the .then metallic wealth of the Spanish colonies. Later developments, intensified within the past eighty years, have, however, changed its fame which now rests on such metallics as copper and tin, and among the non-metallics on nitrate of soda and petroleum. South America proper, excluding Panama, is made up of thirteen countries, a coincident parity with our original thirteen States. Its area is given as 7,231,300 square miles, or slightly less than North America (8,037,000 square miles), is made up as follows:

STRIKING new developments in the field of industrial minerals include the employment of lime, salt, coal, and air for the manufacture of stockings, and the substitution of paper for granite and marble in making tombstones. Certain minerals that have heretofore been regarded as valueless except as museum or laboratory specimens, are now being applied commercially. Serpentine, in forms neither fibrous nor ornamental, massive topaz, pinite, and zoisite are examples. For certain other minerals, notably pyrophyllite, bentonite, vermiculite, and sulphur, extension of established uses into new fields has occurred. Substitution takes a toll in many industries, but producers of industrial minerals as a class have gained more than they have lost in recent years. Encouraging progress has been made in developing at long last a suitable substitute for certain of the uses of mica, the only industrial mineral on the strategic list of commodities established by the War. and Navy Munitions Board.
