A long the mighty Andean Cordillera, there is splendor beyond imagination-in the natural beauty of the mountains and in daring engineering and lavish investment in the mines. This is the story of the great copper mines of Chile and Peru. Each mine has a special quality which has tested the physical and spiritual resources of the founder. In the early days of the older mines, the mining engineer of song and story was more the rule than the exception. He was physically tough, ingenious and a leader of men. In the current political and social environment of Chile and Peru, the foreign contract mining engineer is still needed; but he must be a different type of man. To John J. Selters at Cerro's Rio Blanco, the principal ingredient is still "toughness," but it is "toughness of mind" that is needed. "He probably should be a teacher." The copper mines are not new. They were, almost without exception, worked by Indians (La Exotica might prove the rule), and later by the intrepid Spaniards. Modern mining began after the turn of the century. In Chile, the first of the big ones was the Braden Copper Co. founded on the El Teniente deposit. This development was followed by Chile Exploration Co. at Chuquicamata and Andes Copper at Potrerillos. These properties have been developed over the years by vast expenditures of money and a monumental amount of labor. None was free of technical problems-metallurgy at Chuqui, marginal grade of the old mine at Andes, avalanches and the great fire at El Teniente. The evolution which has brought the established mines of Chile, and the new ones coming on stream, to their present state of development is in reality the work of wonders of input-money, engineering and responsible management in an atmosphere of political stability. Without any one of these, the result would have been failure.

Copper production in the. United States in 1972 amounted to 1,658,000 tons according to the USBM. This figure is up over 1971 but falls below 1970 production of 1,719,101 tons. This report is essentially about the status of copper mining operations in the U.S. and is an update and expansion of the report "Southwest Copper-A Position Survey" published in [A=], October 1965. At that time, the trend was toward using larger equipment to mine lower grade ore and toward the expansion of dump leaching practice. That trend continues today but, it is overlain by intensive activity to comply with existing environ¬mental legislation and uncertainty over proposed revisions of venerable laws governing mining. In the U.S. today there is, practically speaking, no excess smelting capacity so that expansion of copper production through the startup of new mines is inhibited. Owners of a large undeveloped orebody would have to decide before going into production whether to sell the concentrates offshore, which has many problems, whether to try one of several unproved chemical processes for producing refined metal from concentrates or embarking on the construction of a traditional pyrometallurgical plant in the face of considerable uncertainty over the pollution standards that eventually must be met. The situation is such that not only is the present rate of U.S. copper production threatened but the ability to meet projected increased demand in the years ahead may have been severely retarded.

During the first ten months of 1943 copper was produced at a higher rate than in 1947. However, on Oct. 24 one of the large mines was shut down due to a strike. As of Dec. 31 the strike was still in effect and had already resulted in a loss of production of 50,000 tons of copper. The demand for copper was considerably greater throughout the year than the supply. The price of electrolytic copper delivered at the Atlantic Seaboard refineries advanced from 21.20 to 23.20 cents per lb during the year. This sustained demand for copper, together with the increase in price, has had the natural effect of spurring interest in uncovering new deposits, and in re-examination of known low-grade deposits and old tailing clumps. This is in addition to the usual reevaluation activities which normally result from the constant improvements in efficiency of ore concentration.

The brightest spot in the mineral economy of the Philippines is the rapid development of reserves and production of copper. If economic conditions remain favorable and the political climate is encouraging, production of this metal should increase at a rate of 25% per year for several years, long enough to rank this country as one of the major copper producers of the world. In 1965 the copper content of the Philippine concentrates was approximately 60,000 tons. It should total about 80,000 tons in 1966. A major part of the increase will come from the rich Lepanto mine located in Mountain Province, North Central Luzon. Daily production of ore increased from 1200 to 2000 tons at the end of 1965. The ore, consisting of enargite and luzonite, averages nearly 3% copper and 0.12 oz. of gold per ton. It is an under- ground operation with a cutoff grade of 2%. The ore is associated with extensive silicification under a volcanic cap rock. Further expansion to increase ore production to 2600 tpd is under way.

THE copper industry operated at high capacity throughout 1947, with no serious tie-ups in operation as was the case in 1946, when almost the entire industry was shut down by a four-month strike. Refined copper production in the United States averaged 94,250 tons for the first eleven months and deliveries to domestic consumers, including foreign copper for domestic consumption, averaged 114,000 tons per month. On April 29 the import duty of 4d per lb was suspended until March 31, 1949. Copper prices fluctuated considerably for a short time thereafter. Over the year the price of domestic electrolytic copper at refineries on the Atlantic seaboard advanced from 19.225¢ on Jan. 2 to 21.200d on Dec. 24.

B ECAUSE of its remote geographical position and inaccessibility, little is generally known of the mining and prospecting in Northern Rhodesia. In this rather new and promising region, the development of mines presents many difficulties. Although many mineral discoveries have been made, progress in .prospecting the huge mining concessions has been handicapped by the lack of roads, communication, transportation, native population and incomplete knowledge of geology.

THE copper-bearing rocks of Lake Superior are composed of a series of metamorphic rocks, comprised under the names of amygdaloid and conglomerate, in which the copper and silver found with them are pseudomorphs. These rocks, generally, have well-defined walls which cause them to separate easily. Generally, the country rock is sterile, but it occasionally rises into the copper-bearing rock, and then carries copper. Usually, the amygdaloids carry copper, and the greenstones or melaphyres which encase them do not. There is a very generally received opinion that the copper in these beds occurs in shoots. This does not appear to be proved, though the opinion seems to have some foundation from the experience of the Calumet & Hecla Mine, where a body of poor rock has been left, which, on the mine map, shows a general direction. The theory may be true of that individual mine, but too little work has been done in the other mines to draw any decided conclusion. The copper is very unequally disseminated in the rock, if any given piece be taken as an example, but, if the whole copper-bearing series be considered, its distribution is uniform. It may prove that there are certain directions in which the copper has been deposited more abundantly than in others, and these may be found to correspond with certain geological causes, but up to the present time the knowledge gained is not sufficient to warrant any general conclusion. These rocks are supplemented by a series of true fissure veins, of which there are several systems, making the amount of native copper very large. Unfortunately, except in the fissure veins, known as "mass-mines," the copper is so scattered through the rock, and is in such a fine state of division, that, although it is not always difficult to mine, it is always difficult to dress it sufficiently too make it pay. The metal is so uniformly distributed through these copper-bearing rocks that detached pieces, called " float," are found in digging on almost any land in the country. COPPER operations in the Congo mean the operations of the Union Miniere du Haut Katanga, because there are no other copper industries there. There is a mine at Bwana M'Kubwa, a little way to the South, in Rhodesia, which has been operated on a small scale, and-another farther south, the Falcon mine, but in quite a different section of the country. This Bwana M'Kubwa mine has recently been reorganized financially and the Minerals Separation interests have taken an extensive share in it, so that it may come into operation. The Union Miniere's operations are in Katanga, the most southeastern province of the Belgian Congo, and the company's concession is in the southeastern part of that province. The usual route for going into the country is by way of Cape Town, thence over the South African Railways through Kimberly and Mafe- king to Bulawayo, then by the Beira, Mashonland and Rhodesia Railways to the Rhodesia-Congo border, passing Victoria Falls on the way, and finally by the Belgian road, the Chemin de Fer du Katanga, to Elisa- bethville, the African headquarters of the company. From Cape Town to the border it is about 2150 mi. and from the border to Elisabethville about 158 mi., making a little over 2300 mi. from Cape Town, by rail.

The material presented in this chapter is supplemental information on those significant aspects of open-pit copper mining that are to an extent unique and therefore not detailed in previous sections covering the fundamentals of open-pit mine planning, operations and maintenance. In addition, tabulated cost and operating data are presented for a variety of open-pit copper mines. 13.3-1 History. The history of the civilized use of copper began at the end of the Stone Age when man discovered that the red metal, in the form of native copper, could be readily worked into a variety of weapons and tools which simplified the primitive requirements for survival. Almost concurrently, the high value of these early copper products became so widely known that they soon assumed major importance as trading commodities. Copper and copper-alloyed artifacts, even though produced in very limited quantities by ancient miners and metalworkers in a few parts of the Near East and the Western Hemisphere, were so valuable that early warriors and traders carried them into nearly all the world's known areas of importance. As far as copper is concerned, the Bronze Age, at sometime around 8000 BC to 6000 BC, marked the vague, little-known beginning of metallurgy. Man learned to alloy the valuable red metal to make it harder and tougher; its use multiplied as did the variety of weapons and tools made with the gradually increasing metallurgical and fabricating skills. By 3000 BC bronze alloy products became relatively widespread ; copper mining activities assumed tremendous importance and the mines on the Isle of Cyprus developed into prized possessions of each Mediterranean empire from the times of Egyptian supremacy to well beyond the decline of the Roman Empire.

IN the copper industry, the year 1942 was one of striving for larger tonnage and increased production. The demands of the war program placed copper high in the list of strategic metals and the Government encouraged production by offering a premium of 5c. per pound for copper output in excess of the 1941 quotas. This had the effect of increasing the tempo of existing operations and also of initiating a number of projects which will eventually result in production from sources not hitherto exploited. No radically new methods of copper reduction were reported.

Introduction. THE New London copper mine, about 81, miles east of Frederick, Md., was visited by the Writers for a few hours in the spring of 1909 and the following brief notes on ore specimens collected are presented as a contribution to studies in chalcocite ores. For certain data on the structural and areal geology of this portion of Maryland the writers are under obligation to the unpublished notes and maps of Arthur Keith. The detailed study of the ores is the work of B. S. Butler. The deposit here discussed has many similarities to those of the Virginia district of Virginia and North Carolina, which have been described y Graton1 and Laney2, except that in the deposits of the New London mine chalcocite is by far the most important ore mineral, while in the Virginia deposits bornite is commonly-the most important sulphide. In the New London occurrence calcite is the most important gangue mineral.

There is an underlying surge to mining in the Philippines." So said A. R. "Ham" Reed, general manager Itogon-Suyoc Mines, Inc., to this reporter last November. Itogon-Suyoc is a small company with a struggling gold mine, a mixed sulfide mine and some prospects. In the Republic of Philippines (ROP), politics, which have an effect on mining, create some uncertainties. By July 1974, no mining company may have more than 40% foreign ownership. The ownership provision is a matter of concern to such important companies as Atlas and Benguet Consolidated and is generally considered a deterrent to new foreign investment. Under these circumstances, Reed's comments are of interest. On foreign prospectors: Don't come in cold; find a Philippine partner or buy into a company already here. Physical conditions of exploration are tough-terrain, communications -but the mineral potential is excellent.

"Copper was first made in Butte by the use of iron for its precipitation from mine water in 1890. In consequence of a fire breaking out in the St. Lawrence mine of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company in November, 1889, a large quantity of water was poured into the workings, with the intention of flooding the mine and extinguishing the fire. This proved to be impracticable, but this water, on being pumped to the surface, was found to be high in copper sulphate,—tradition says 75/100 of 1 per cent. The Anaconda Copper Mining Company gave Wm. Ledford a lease on this water. He first (lug holes into the ground, filled them with scrap iron and allowed the water to flow through them. Later he built an open-top flume which he partially filled with iron and passed the water through the by the iron precipitation method. An assay in- the year 1890 from Gagnon mine water, showed .0016 per cent or 28 lbs. copper per day. The mine was then opened to the 1,000 level.None of the mine waters encountered in the solid rock in the mines of Butte contained copper in sufficient quantity to produce the metal profitably by the iron precipitation method. At Weed Heights, Nev., precipitation plays a major role in the plant operation. Almost two-thirds of the present copper production is leach-precipitation plant copper. The entire plant complex processes about 135,000 tons of low grade copper ore per week. Of this tonnage, 49,000 tons of about 0.78% sulfide ore are treated in the concentrator. This is handled in the conventional manner of crushing, grinding, and concentration of the copper sulfide by flotation.

THE world production of copper for the first eight months of 1927 shows an increase of 3 per cent over the same period in 1926. Since February of this year, however, production has been considerably curtailed. The United States reduction in the last four months has been offset by the increased South Ameri-can and Belgian Congo production. The United States is now producing 58 per cent of the world production, Chile and Peru 17.3 per cent, Belgian Congo 5 per cent. In 1926 the United States produced 54 per cent, Chile and Peru 16.3 per cent, Belgian Congo 6.3 per cent. ON FEBRUARY 4, 1952, the Phelps Dodge Corporation signed Contract GS-00P(D)-12068 with the United States Government. This interesting document dealt with the "Bisbee East" project as part of the Government's program to increase the supply of needed copper by encouraging private enterprise to expand production. The ore deposit involved was a relatively small body of low-grade ore lying east of the remnants of the old Sacramento Hill deposit that was exploited with indifferent success from 1923 to 1931, as related in THE PORPHYRY COPPERS. Planning for the entire enterprise had been directed from the start by Harrison M. Lavender, who in 1945, succeeded Percy G. Beckett as vice-president and general manager for all of Phelps Dodge's Western mines and smelters. The untimely death of Mr. Lavender in 1952 prevented him from seeing his plans brought to fruition; but in his honor the mine was fit- tingly named "The Lavender Pit" and was so dedicated on August 7, 1954. The Copper Queen Branch operates under- ground mines at Bisbee (production in 1955 was 28,000 tons) ; but, as this volume is concerned only with Porphyry operations, this chapter deals only with the Lavender Pit project, or as the Government knows it, Bisbee East. My reason for going into some detail regarding the floor-price contract is that it is fairly typical of contracts made by the Government in connection with a half-dozen other copper-expansion projects; and, incidentally, with various projects involving other strategic metals. Phelps Dodge did not seek a loan or other financial aid. The only encouragement asked consisted of (a) the privilege of a five-year write-off (commonly called rapid tax amortization)

PORPHYRY mining in the Bisbee district in Arizona did not begin until 1923, though Bisbee had been the scene of profitable copper-mining operations since 1880, and during the interval had contributed roughly 2,000,000,000 lb. of copper to the world's supply. At that time it ranked third among the copper districts of the United States, first place for total production going to Butte, Montana, and second to the district centering around Calumet, Michigan. Bisbee's production had come from the so-called "limestone" mines operated principally by the Phelps Dodge Corporation and the Calumet & Arizona Mining Co. Each of these companies had a large smelting plant at Douglas, 25 miles southeast of Bisbee on the Mexican border. The town of Douglas owed its existence primarily to the copper mines of Bisbee, the particular location having been determined, first, by the fact that water in adequate supply could be obtained by sinking wells; and, second, by its position about equally distant from Bisbee and the mines in Sonora, Mexico, of the Moctezuma Copper Co., a Phelps Dodge subsidiary. Three partners, Martin, Reilly, and Ballard, conducted the first operations of consequence at Bisbee about 1880; and in 1881 a smelting plant consisting of two 36 in. water-jacketed blast furnaces was erected near by. The ore came from open-cut workings on the later-to-be-famous Queen orebody. The furnace charge is said to have averaged 23 per cent copper-twice as rich as the concentrates from the mills and four times as rich as the smelting ore shipped from Bisbee in recent years. As early as 1881, disputes arose among owners of various claims, and groups of claims, over the ownership of orebodies under the law of apex and extra-lateral rights.
