Chemical and mineralogical data on 25 apatitic phosphate ores of diverse origins from commerical deposits around the world were widely variable. From 14 to 18 chemical constituents of each sample were determined, and each sample contained four to ten mineral phases. Altogether there were 34 different mineral phases, many of which occurred in only one sample. Samples contained varieties of francolites, fluorapatites, and mixed hydroxyfluorapatites. The apatite compositions calculated from chemical data showed that certain types of substitutions were characteristic of different apatite varieties, but every variety had some degree of substitution of (CO3)2- for (PO4)3-, and the P205 contents of the apatites ranged from 35.1 %for a North Carolina apatite to 41.9% for a Missouri apatite. In a concentrate with a grade of 32% P2O5, the North Carolina sample should contain about 8.7% gangue and the Missouri sample about 23.7% gangue. To optimize the digestion process of a phosphate ore, it is necessary to consider the dissolution behaviors of different mineral phases during acidulation and their possible effects on chemical properties of a fertilizer intermediate. In the production of wet-process acids or superphosphates, acidulation of certain minerals may cause foaming and formation of sludge, filtration, corrosion, and handling problems.

COAL preparation, or coal washing, is not a new subject to the Pacific Northwest. Most of the coals mined in this state smaller than lump, and nearly all such sizes mined on the Pacific slope of the Cascade mountains, require washing before marketing. A large proportion is being put through some washing process, but coal washing in this state, has not reached the efficiency it is practicable to obtain. In fields where the coal, as mined, contains less impurities, where working conditions make it practicable to eliminate some of these impurities under- ground, or where a large proportion of the run-of-mine coal is lump, coal preparation does not present the problem it does in our local field. Here the coal is associated with considerable impurities and the slack, or steam sizes, aggregate about 80 per cent. of the output. Therefore, approximately 80 per cent. of the coal mined must be washed to become a valuable fuel. Washing then becomes a major operation, as hand picking of the 20 per cent. of lump is a standard and comparatively simple operation. Some coal beds here are so interstratified with bone, of a more or less massive nature, that hand picking of lump is not economically efficient. In such cases the coal must be crushed fine enough for it to be freed from the bone, so that the two may be separated. Coal cleaning in this field, therefore, must receive skilled attention to purify this fuel and raise its stand- ard. Without greater efficiency in cleaning, the importation of coal from outside the state will be even greater than in the past.

BECAUSE of the attention that has re¬cently been given to the health and safety of miners by various organizations such as the A.I.M.E., The American Congress, Mining Section, National Safety Council, as well as the Bureau of Mines and various state mining departments, your committee on health and safety deemed it best to call attention this year to the mine-accident cause that is by far the most important; namely, injuries due to falls of ground, rock, roof and coal. Each of several members of the committee contributed a brief outline of the importance of this accident cause in his district. While these papers were brief, it would require too much time and space to give them in full, therefore we present an outline of each and summation of all. REPORT OF M. D. In mechanized mining, there is a tendency toward reduction in this class of accidents because the operator of the machine is usually at a distance of 10 to 20 ft. from the face, whereas. in hand loading the miner is close to the face during most of the shift. No doubt the use of aluminum and light steel beams supported at regular intervals by jacks, a common practice in mechanical mining, has contributed to the favorable record so far developed. Fies, Vice-President, DeBardeleben Coal Corporation, Birmingham, Ala., says: With reference to the types of mining, it is suggested that a clear understanding be had as to the character and thickness of the directly overlying strata, with especial consideration to the strength and in some cases an analysis of it. In coal mining, generally speaking, overlying strata higher in silica than others is stronger. In changing from narrow to wide places, the procedure should be experimental, both as to the width and depth of places and as to the nature of the necessary timbering. Since most of the accidents in coal mining particularly are due to falls of roof and coal, this phase of mining should be attacked with vigor. There is no substitute for discipline and, in this connection, under present conditions it is important that cooperation by the labor organizations be sought and that a spirit of fairness prevail. Frequent and thorough inspection of all active working places should be made.

This article discusses principal areas relevant to financing natural resource projects using as an example a hypothetical newly proposed direct reduction facility. The issues most directly affecting the project from the standpoint of financing are categorized in four groups: 1. Lenders' differing requirements with respect to projected cashflows; 2. The impact of leveraging on project viability; 3. The importance of appropriate debt structure; 4. The significance of accurate and complete capital cost estimates. The findings emphasize that the economics and the financing of a project are not only inseparable, but that they should also be viewed as directly interactive during the project planning process.

CHANGES in coke hardness affect the working of the blast furnace, for soft coke is an obstacle to proper furnace operation. Soft coke is due to a low hydrogen-oxygen ratio in the coal charged; increasing this ratio increases the hardness of the coke. The best means of determining the hardness of coke is the combined tumbler and ball-mill. Soft coke is a great hindrance to proper blast-furnace operation and changes in coke hardness affect the working of the furnace. The best method of determining the hardness of coke is by using a combination tumbler-ball-mill. Soft coke is due to a low hydrogen-oxygen ratio in the coal charged. An increase of this ratio improves the hardness of the resulting coke. WHAT IS GOOD COKE? It is not always appreciated that the correct answer may be such a reliable forecast to the physical condition of the blast furnace, and incidentally its entire operation, that among the ordinary variations in other raw materials and also in operating conditions, it assumes a position of primary significance. Inasmuch as coke forms two-thirds of the total bulk of material charged, this assertion will not seem exaggerated, and in the subsequent discussion its applicability will be presented. Coke is the ideal blast-furnace fuel because it is strong and hard enough to resist the crushing and grinding effects of the furnace burden, and its porosity allows the ready passage of gas upward through the charge, and rapid combustion before the tuyeres. Coke deprived of its strength and with a cell structure physically frail and chemically susceptible to solution by carbon dioxide, has its chief asset eliminated. When the melting zones are approached the fluid cinder trickling toward the hearth will envelope the small pieces of coke and form a sticky mass that will retard the free passage of gas. RISSER] There is a tendency among laymen to relegate America's coal industry to Pennsylvania and West Virginia, completely overlooking-or unaware of- the vast reserves, both those developed and those untapped, situated in the 1.4 million square miles between the Appalachians and the Rockies. At the 1965 AIME Annual Meeting, Hubert E. Risser, Principal Mineral Economist of the Illinois State Geological Survey, presented an interesting picture of the wealth of mineral fuels occurring in that area. In his talk entitled "Trends in Mineral Fuels in the Central United States", Mr. Risser underscored the fact that "more than half of the nation's known reserves of each of the three major fuels-oil, gas and coal-lie within the Central area." The highlights of his speech, with emphasis on the coal situation, are excerpted below.

MUCH has been written of late regarding the flotation of coal as a means of reclaiming the valuable portion of the fines encountered in nearly all methods of coal preparation. Whether the process be wet or dry, whether the dust be sent through the entire process or removed prior to the cleaning by some such method as screening or aspiration, one of the final products consists of a considerable proportion of -48-mesh material. The percentage of this -48-mesh material depends upon the mining method, transportation, storage, and method of preparation. The ton-nage of this dust material ranges from 1 to 10 per cent of the total output of the cleaning plants. Four methods of disposal are available for this coal: 1. Disposal with the refuse from the plant. 2. Addition, after being reclaimed from the wash water, or dust collectors, without cleaning to the larger sizes. 3. Separate disposal as a pulverized fuel. 4. Cleaning so that addition to the larger sizes benefits the product as a whole. It is also true that flotation in one form or another is the only known way to effectively clean this material. While some processes do a reason-able cleaning job down to and including +100 mesh, by far the greater-majority stop at or short of the +48-mesh size.

ROCK is no doubt the most abundant of all material things because the planet on which we live is made of it. All animal and vegetable organisms and the multitude of natural and manufactured products that occupy a comparatively insignificant film on the outer surface of the planet are derived from rock. Processes of Nature acting for untold centuries have transformed rock into soil, making possible the development of vegetable and annual life; and rocks have supplied the numerous raw materials, metallic and nonmetallic, wherewith the innumerable appurtenances of a complex civilization have been fabricated. As time goes on we live with increasing speed and with enlarged desires. Time and space are shortened by man's ingenuity, and products for human use must be manufactured with greater and greater celerity. It was inevitable that Nature's slow processes of rock alteration should fail to keep pace with human demands and that the variety of natural products should fall far short of the requirements of an industrial age. Man therefore supplemented these processes by attacking rock in its native bed amid using it to supply needs not otherwise satisfied.

The kinetics of the important reactions occurring in an electrowinning cell have been determined. This information has been used to quantify relationships between the operating variables of current density, solution composition, agitation, and temperature and the resulting current efficiency and deposit quality. Analysis of these results has shown (1) the importance of dissolved iron in determining maximum possible current efficiency and corrosion rate at the cathode suspension loop, (2) the role of agitation, current density, inert salts and temperature in*determining deposit quality and (3) the effects of non-uniformity in the hydrodynamic conditions from the bottom to top of the cell. The significance of the results of this study to the operation of a commercial plant directly treating acid leach solutions is discussed.

THE milling of talc, as is the case of many non-metallic minerals, until recently, has not received adequate technical consideration, for the talc industry has become of importance only within the last decade. At first, talc was used only in the massive form, for foot warmers, griddles, and so on, and milling methods were unnecessary. As the demand for ground talc increased, producers adopted the machinery used in the milling of flour; in fact, many talc mills were rebuilt flour mills. Improvement has been slow, but today several types of grinding and separating machinery are in use; many of them, however, are still inadequate and inefficient. To determine the best methods of milling talc, it is necessary to understand the essential properties a talc must possess to fit it for a particular use. For toilet purposes, whiteness, freedom from lime and grit, fineness of grain, and good "slip" are essential. As a paper filler or coating, the talc must be white, have a good slip, be free from grit and iron, uniform, and fine grained; freedom from lime is a disputed point. Fibrous talc is supposed to be superior to massive on account of the interlocking of grains in the paper, thus increasing its strength; this point, though, is in doubt. In general, talc for the paper industry need not be of as high quality or as fine grained as that used for toilet purposes. Talc is usually bought by sample, for which reason it is difficult to state the essential properties for use in paint, rubber, roofing, and so on. The adoption of standard screen tests and standard grades by producers is necessary before an accurate basis for manufacturing or selling standards can be established. Off-color tales might be utilized, as in Germany and-Austria, by the establishment of standard grades of colored tales.

PRESIDENT SCOTT TURNER officiated as chairman of the opening session on mining methods, Monday morning, Feb. 15. The first paper was that of Max H. Barber on open-pit mining in the Lake Superior district, read by C. F. Jackson. W. L. Taylor stated that liquid-oxygen explosive had been tried but that the operators are satisfied with the explosives used; lb. of dynamite breaks one ton of rock. Although black powder is considered the most effective explosive, the factor of safety has decided in favor of high explosives. Lucien Eaton told of the Michigan Lime and Chemical Co.'s large L. 0. X. plant at Rogers City, Mich. Mr. Turner referred to this plant, also said that the Bureau of Mines is shortly to issue Bulletin 349 completely covering the use of L. 0. X. from its inception. W. D. B. Motter, Jr., gave some items concerning Chuquicamata, Chile. Twelve years ago the blasts moved 850,000 to 1,000,000 tons, but average shots now move 250,000 to 300,000 tons. One pound of L. 0. X. breaks 3.7 tons, against 3.1 tons by dynamite. Another speaker told of some large dynamite blasts in open pits, one of 360,000 Ib. in March, 1931, and another of 430,000 lb. to be shot in 1932. Tests have been made to determine the effect of large shots on the surrounding country. Mr. Taylor said that 4- and 5-yd. shovels were preferable to those of 8 yd.; their performance is better and cost is lower.

WE are all interested in our ou7n lines of endeavor and consider ourselves the center of the universe. The farmer thinks he is the most important man because he feeds us. The doctor knows he is the real center because he keeps us well. The lawyer says that he is indispensable because he keeps the peace. The banker furnishes us a place to keep our money and tells us how to make proper use of it. The miner sags that without metals there would be no civilization. I think that my branch has sufficient interest and exhilaration. of accomplishment to fully occupy any man's mind and attention. Mining and metallurgy are as old as the human race. It did not have much, if any, importance in the stone age as there are not found remains of iron and copper, but in the bronze age, which was co-existent with the stone age, it came to the front. Iron and copper were the most important metals. Copper, as bronze, was known in ancient Egypt, I\~:IS important in Rome and other parts of Europe and in Asia; in South America among the Aztecs and farther North were the Mound Builders and the early inhabitants of Lake Superior. At a very early date the Egyptians conquered the Sinai peninsula for the sake of the copper produced there. The history of copper metallurgy can be compared to that of a flower. The seed is sown in darkness and in the Dark Ages the crude metallurgy of copper began. As the shoot comes up from the seed it may be compared to the age of alchemy; the branches of the plant can be compared to the Middle Ages; the flowering shoots to the 17th century, the budding to the 19th and the blossom to our own time from 1870 on.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) . PRIOR to 1908 the oil production in the State of California, had been almost entirely a heavy fuel, oil, with a high flash point, hut changed within a-short period to a large percentage of refining oil with a low flash, by reason of the coming in of the Santa Maria field, the Midway field, and the increased production of the Fullerton field. This is clearly shown in the following tabulation of California's production: Year Barrels . WILLIAMS, San Francisco, Cal.-Is the Union Avila plant run as a topping plant or as a dehydrating plant? A. F. L. BELL, San Francisco, Cal.-Both. It takes off an average of 20 per cent. water besides topping the oil. Part of the crude oil is run through an electrical separator before running to the topping plant, but the entire crude averages about 20 per cent. when it enters the topping plant. DAVID T. DAY, Washington, D. C.-I suppose most of the work contemplated in these large topping plants is simply to deal with topping the oils with only a small percentage of water in them. A. F. L. BELL.-Not more than 2 per cent. of water can be handled in ordinary stills without causing trouble. At our Gavotte refinery, where the oil runs from 15 to 30 per cent. water, we carry 20 lb., pressure oil our stills to hold the framing down, we can do that with small stills, with large one's it would not be safe; but with a retort, the quantity of water contained in the oil does not affect its working. It simply means additional fuel to evaporate the water.

L. C. GRATON, professor of geology in Harvard University, addressed the New York Section on April 24 on-his impressions of the Rand. His beautifully clear and concise address was delivered without notes, so that what follows is merely a resume of the principal points made. The world is apparently coming to the end of ore discoveries easily made, yet we need metals at a steadily increasing rate. If surface discoveries are to decline, then we must find other ores or use less metals. The probable chances of finding ore are greater in the centers of big production than in new districts, as proved statistically. It is unsafe to say that a field is worked out. Therefore, deep mining holds possibilities and is an interesting study that will progressively gain in importance. The origin of the gold in the banket of the Rand has been a geologic football for a long time. Of the various theories, two have survived: 1. Infiltration into permeable conglomerate beds from deep-seated sources; 2. the placer hypothesis, which holds that gravel beds originally had the gold in them. At present, the second theory is accepted by the majority, as a result of the studies by the Union Geological Survey and by E: F. Mellor which were published about fifteen years ago.

Of the many opportunities in the mining industry to invest funds to improve operations, there is always some limit in every company as to how much can be spent each year for the acquisition of capital assets. Generally, there are many more opportunities for investment than funds to make the investments. As such, one of management's goals is to select the most profitable of all the opportunities available. Each opportunity must be carefully analyzed for its potential percentage rate of return. This percentage return or return on investment concept is an accepted financial yardstick of business profit- ability. For today's mining engineers, this problem resolves itself in the job of determining how to in- vest most productively the cash that is flowing from their operations so that it will multiply in value. There are four basic types of capital investments: Strategic investments, such as selecting a plant site, are those that affect virtually all long-run plans of a company. Change in a company's product line and expansion of company facilities are two other types of capital investments.

The division in which the metals for conversion are melted. 2. The division in which the metals are converted into steel and cast into ingots, or the converting department. 3. The engine and boiler department which supplies the hydraulic power required to move the machinery, and which furnishes the blast used for converting the crude metal into steel.
