Heavy metal contents in stream waters, sediments, and selected aquatic algae were determined for the upper Meramec River basin, Missouri, of 3905 km2 (1508 sq mi) area and site of the proposed and controversial Meramec dam and reservoir. Six distinct drainage areas within the basin are: (1) a lightly industrialized and farm area, (2) a primitive forested- ranch area, (3) an area which includes the Northern New Lead Belt, (4) the westward drainage of an old and extensive barite mining area, (5) the main trunk of the Meramec River, and (6) short north-divide tributaries of the Meramec River. Lower Paleozoic sediments rest nonconformably upon eroded and hilly Precambrian igneous basement. This locally rises as major inliers and also makes up the St. Francois Mountains to the east. Major lead, and lesser zinc, copper, cobalt, and nickel mineralization occurs in the buried Cambrian Bonneterre dolomite. Residual barite is present along the eastern fringe of the basin and is derived from the Potosi formation. Some 62 water samples, active stream sediments (AS), bank samples (BS), and 11 selected aquatic algae samples were collected in the various drainage areas and analyzed for copper, lead, zinc, cadmium, nickel, arsenic, and mercury contents. Heavy metals in water have a maximum range of 1-120 ppb (parts per billion), and this for zinc. The AS and BS sediments have orders of magnitude greater acid leachable metal contents in the -80 mesh fraction, with lead hawing the greatest range of 11-1028 ppm. Heavy metal content of stream-algae approaches that of the sediments in which they grow. Most anomalous heavy metal accumulations occur near mining and milling activities and in the streams draining such areas. Significant distortions of the primary dispersion pattern militate against geochemical exploration for hidden ore zones, but do demonstrate the mining, milling, and smelting activities of man, and sporadic mineral occurrences in younger horizons.

Since advances in the understanding of gravity thickening reflects the development of knowledge about suspensions themselves, the paper starts with the discussion of flocculent and nonflocculent suspensions. The properties of flocculent suspensions and their behavior in different concentration regions (zone settling, channelling, compression) are defined and discussed. In the main portion of the paper, the behavior of flocculent and nonflocculent suspensions during batch as well as continuous thickening, is presented, together with a brief review of the gravity thickening theories and sizing methods. The classical as well as the most recently developed methods are presented and their use and limitations are discussed.

TOTAL DIRECT IMPACT The uranium mining industry's principal economic impacts on the Texas economy are the result of three flows of money from the industry into the remainder of the state's economy. These three are: (1) money paid to individuals (personal income) ; (2) money paid to other businesses (business income); and (3) money paid to state and local governments (government revenues). As these direct payments from the uranium industry to various other sectors of the Texas economy subsequently circulate and recirculate within the state, the indirect effects of uranium mining's direct impacts multiply to reach amounts significantly higher than the direct income flows alone. Over the past decade, the uranium mining industry has substantially increased its role as a provider of jobs, personal income, business income, and government revenues in Texas. The growth has come almost exclusively in a largely rural, seven-county area that lies within the triangle formed by the Laredo, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi metropolitan areas. The uranium mining industry, in fact, has been the major dynamic element in this rural area despite relative stagnation in most of the region's other basic economic sectors. Over the three years from 1976 to 1978, the South Texas uranium mining industry directly contributed a total of $115 million to the economy of the seven- county region in which it operated and $164 million to the economy of the entire state of Texas. In 1979 alone, the total direct contribution of the industry to the Texas economy had climbed to $124 million in personal, business, and government income. PERSONAL INCOME IMPACT In the period from 1976 through 1978, the South Texas uranium mining industry provided an average of $12.5 million in personal income each year directly to residents of Atascosa, Bee, Duval , Karnes, Live Oak, McMullen, and Webb counties -- the seven Texas' counties that make up the South Texas Uranium Belt. A1 though 84 percent of this resulted from the employment of area residents in uranium industry jobs, some amounts were also provided by the payment of rents and royalties to land owners for the use of their land and mineral rights in uranium mining operations. In 1979, the uranium industry provided approximately $38 million to residents of the Uranium Belt and the rest of Texas. This was more than double the average of $16.1 million provided to Texas residents during the 1976 to 1978 period. The full importance of the uranium industry as a source of personal income, however, should not be reckoned merely by the amount of wages and salaries that it pays directly to its own employees, nor by its rent and royalty payments paid directly to land and mineral rights owners living in Texas. The added payments that the industry makes directly to other Texas businesses and state and local governments in Texas are themselves converted into personal income as those business firms and government units in turn pay their employees. All of the direct income payments made by the uranium industry circulate and recirculate within the state's economy, multiplying their impact as they go, until they eventually all leak out of the state as federal taxes or as payments to individuals or businesses located outside of Texas. The combined circulation and recirculation of the direct personal, business, and government income that was provided by the-uranium industry in Texas during 1976, 1977, and 1978 resulted in an average annual amount of indirect personal income of more than $83 mill ion. This alone was $20 mill ion more than the industry's average annual sales during the same years. The total of combined direct and indirect personal income contributed to the Texas economy by the uranium mining industry in that same three-year period thus averaged almost $100 million annually. In 1979, the amount of indirect personal income contributed to the Texas economy by the circulation of uranium mining's direct contributions had risen to about $196 million, more than double the average of the previous three years. The combined direct and in- direct personal income impact in 1979 thus amounted to $234 million. BUSINESS INCOME IMPACT The income provided directly to other Texas business firms through the purchase of needed goods and services by the uranium industry has been twice as big as the industry's payrolls. In 1976, 1977, and 1978, the South Texas uranium industry spent an average of almost $36 million each year to buy both goods and services from other Texas businesses. By 1979, this direct contribution to the Texas economy had swollen to $76 million. The biggest share of the uranium industry's payments to other businesses have gone to contracting firms, including both construction firms and those providing specialized mining services. In the past four years, about 40 percent of the direct payments made by Texas uranium producers to other Texas firms have been to contractors. Texas wholesale and retail firms have also shared in the business sales provided by the South Texas uranium mining industry. Over the past four years, Texas wholesale and retail trade businesses have accounted for about 34 percent of the uranium mining industry's purchases from other Texas businesses. Public utilities firms have received another six per- cent, while Texas manufacturers and transportation firms have accounted for about five percent each. Ore estimation at Cyprus Pima mine begins with estimating average copper grades for mine model blocks. Accuracy of the estimates has been checked four times in the last several years by comparing the estimates with arithmetic averages of corresponding blasthole (BH) assays. The data file now contains 3.567 estimated blockgrades and more than 10,000 blasthole assays. These data were compared by straight-line regression analysis at appropriate intervals as the body of data grew. Arithmetic averages of the estimates differed each time from arithmetic averages of the BH averages by nearly the same amount. More significantly, regression curves of the new total sets of data did not change position appreciably showing that copper grade estimates of blocks in all grade ranges from the lowest to the highest grade ores remained in error by nearly the same amount. Other studies revealed that core hole assays of the dominant ore type are biased and that that bias almost equals the error in estimation. Discovery of constancy in error indicated that regression analysis could be a means for correcting estimates of average block copper grades. A correction for estimated block grades was developed. It required determining which regression is appropriate for the particular problem, and a mechanism that is demonstrably sound. This paper describes the problem and the solution: No comparable study has been, found in the literature. Two other applications of regression analysis to metal grade comparisons are presented. Each adds a bit of support to a generalization which was suggested by correction of average block copper grades, namely, when performance of an estimate is to be evaluated, the variable taken to be the yardstick for the performance should be regressed on the estimate.

In the past decade, numerous large scale drilling projects have made use of reverse circulation air lift methods. Reverse air lift pumping can be established by injecting gas into a column of liquid; the subsequently decreased density of the gas-liquid mixture allows atmospheric pressure outside the lift conduit to establish flow. The rate of flow can be controlled by varying the gas to liquid ratio. A typical reverse circulation air lift system is depicted in [Fig. 1]. Allen 1 has described a number of reverse air lift drilling projects. Although cited examples are generally related to large diameter holes, the method has seen use in other applications such as sand dredging, chemical pumping, water well pumping. and continuous coring. One particular benefit obtained with enclosed reverse circulation drilling is elimination of lost circulation. The required air/water ratio for pumping at a given submergence and lift has been established experimentally by Gibbs.2 His data, however, do not reflect sensitivity of flow rate to air/water ratio. Introduction Great Salt Lake Minerals & Chemicals Corp. (GSL), a subsidiary of Gulf Resources & Chemical Corp., is located on the east side of the Great Salt Lake, approximately 20 miles from Ogden, UT. GSL processes brine from the north arm of the lake to produce potash, salt cake, salt, and magnesium chloride brine. Potash fertilizer, in the form of K2SO4 is GSL's primary product. The CSL Sulfate of Potash Complex: The GSL potash complex (depicted in [Fig. 1]) is divided into a solar evaporation pond system and the process plants. The solar evaporation system consists of a 17,000-acre (68.8 km2) ponding operation where the various salts deposit during the summer evaporation season and a harvesting operation which recovers the deposits during the remainder of the year. The harvest is either preconcentrated in the flotation plant or processed directly in the chemical plant where sulfate of potash (SOP) is produced. The chemistry of the lake brine results in a solar deposit containing primarily kainite (KC1 . MgSO4 . 3H20), schoenite (K2SO4 . MgS04 . 6H20), and halite (NaCI), with some carnallite (KC1 . MgC12 . 6H20) and epsomite (MgSOq . 7H20). Other minerals may be deposited, depending upon the weather during the evaporation season. Each year, the solar deposit in the evaporation ponds will greatly depend upon the summer weather conditions, which have in the past proven to be quite unpredictable. Weather may alter both the quantity of the solar deposit and the composition of this deposit. During a "short" evaporation season, the tonnage deposited decreases, but depending upon the short-term weather, the potash mineral content can vary greatly. The removal of heavy metal compounds from a synthesized waste cyanide solution is achievable by a precipitation-flotation method. However, the differential separation of constituting metals by this method was thought to be very difficult. The present author found that addition of ferrous salt to the synthesized waste cyanide solution of cadmium and copper can modify the separation characteristics of these metals. In this paper, the separation of cadmium from copper in the synthesized waste cyanide water by the precipitation-flotation method is discussed. This differential flotation uses ferrous salt as a precipitant and sodium oleate as a collector. Based on a series of fundamental flotation tests, actual differential flotation tests were made. The separation of cadmium from copper in the synthesized waste cyanide water was found to be satisfactory. This method can be effective for the removal of difficult-to- separate colloidal precipitates from liquids by the sedimentation method, provided the applicability of this method to the separation of the other metals is promising. This consists of the intensive studies which have been conducted at author's laboratory.

This paper addresses a process by which both the disposal and utilization of preparation plant coal refuse can be simultaneously accomplished with an attendant benefit of significantly increasing the percentage of extractable coal. A laboratory study is described in which coal refuse was successfully utilized as an aggregate in low cost concrete (coal-crete) mixes under simulated mine environments. Coal-crete specimens with compressive strengths of 14 000 kPa (2000 psd were consistently produced. A construction sequence and mining plans are offered for placing the low-cost coal-crete pillars in accessible areas in room and-pillar mines so that a substantial portion of the remaining coal pillars could be extracted. The method could be applicable in areas where mining procedures do not permit pillar extraction because of possible surface subsidence, roof problems, or other conditions. Possible structural difficulties with the coal-crete pillar support system are discussed. Using a discounted cash flow analysis, the economic feasibility of mining with the coal-crete pillar system is investigated. The cost of the system is compared to the cost of a mining system which would have less coal recovery. The analysis indicates that although at higher coal selling prices the coal-crete mining system may yield an acceptable rate of return, the alternative of leaving the coal pillars is more attractive at the present time.

This study initiated to explore the potential of commercial chelating extractant for beneficiation of minerals revealed "LIX "65N to be an excellent collector for cuprite and chrysocolla. The collector action of the LIX is proposed to result from its chelation with copper species on the surface of the minerals. Thus, the syn-isomer of LIX65N, which is unable to form a chelate with copper ions, failed also to act as a collector. The proposed mechanism takes into account partitioning of LIX between the mineral surface (to form a surface chelate) and the copper chelate dispersed in the bulk aqueous phase (either due to formation of the chelate with dissolved copper, or due to detachment of chelate formed at surface). The efficiency of the collection is dependent upon this partitioning since the bulk chelate is found unable to collect. The marked decrease in flotation obtained when copper was added to the system supports this mechanism. The dependence of flotation of chrysocolla and cuprite on pH and reagentizing time is discussed on the basis of the proposed mechanism. Batch laboratory flotation tests using synthetic mixtures of oxide, sulfide and mixed oxide-sulfide copper minerals with quartz demonstrated the ability of LIX to separate the copper minerals from quartz.

Introduction This paper is a general description of current central Florida phosphate mining, beneficiation, and product transportation. It is directed and believed to be of interest to engineers not familiar with this industry. Deposit: The phosphate deposits of central Florida are generally located in a five county area which includes Polk, Hillsborough, Hardee, Manatee, and DeSota counties. Geologically, the deposit is of marine origin and is identified as the Bone Valley formation. This formation is Pliocene to Recent in geological age and overlies a Miocene limestone formation known as the Hawthorn. The Bone Valley formation sediments are regionally characterized by equal proportions of apatite, quartz, and clay. The clay is predominantly of the mont-morillonite family. On a local scale, however, the proportions of these three major constituents vary considerably. The phosphate occurs as the apatite mineral (Ca 10F2(PO4)(6) and with the clay and sand, the minable ore is commonly referred to as matrix. This matrix is overlain by unconsolidated overburden of sand and sandy clays, ranging in depth from 10 to 45 ft. The matrix usually occurs in fairly horizontal continuous beds from 3 to 25 ft in thickness. The bedded limestone formation lies directly below the matrix and is generally well defined. The phosphate particles range from 3/4 in. to 200 mesh (Tyler) in size. The phosphate particles coarser than 14 mesh are called pebble phosphate and those less than 14 mesh are termed flotation feed which, when beneficiated, subsequently become concentrates. Through mining and beneficiation, phosphate quality is measured in BPL percent which stands for bone phosphate of lime units. In subsequent chemical manufacturing, the quality is indicated by P205 content. The deposit is economically characterized by various ratios such as tons of product per acre and cubic yards handled per ton of product. Magnesium, iron, and aluminum content are also considered in evaluating ore reserves. These elements are often critical to the chemical fertilizer processes. Presently, an ore body is considered economically minable if it meets the criteria shown in [Table 1]. These, of course, are general guidelines and specific costs and returns on investment must be considered in each case for acquiring reserves. On a new grass-root venture, a 20-30 year life is generally expected with a mineral recovery of 80%. History and Uses Phosphate mining in central Florida began around the turn of the century. However, in the early days, only pebble phosphate was produced until about 1930 when technology was available to beneficiate the -14 + 150 mesh particles. The -150 or -200 mesh material was discarded as it is today. The basic processes for beneficiation are washing, scrubbing, desliming, sizing, and flotation. These basic unit processes are essentially the same today although many improvements have been developed since the early days. Phosphate is used primarily in the production of high analysis fertilizer chemicals, typical of which are triple superphosphate, monoammonium phosphate (MAP), and diammonium phosphate (DAP). Phosphate is also used in the production of food preservatives, dyes for cloths, vitamin and mineral capsules, steel hardeners, gasoline and oil additives, toothpaste, shaving creams and soaps, bone china dishes, plastics, optical glass, photographic films, light filaments, water softeners, insecticides, soft drinks, road fill, and livestock feed supplements. Florida produces over 80% of the nation's marketable phosphate rock and one-third of the world production, according to the US Bureau of Mines. This amounted to approximately 35 million tons in 1975. Exports of Florida phosphate rock were to such countries as Canada, Japan, West Germany, Italy, and India, with Canada and Japan being the major users. Almost 95 o of all outbound cargo shipped through the port of Tampa is phosphate rock or related products. Beneficiation Following is a description of Agrico's new Fort Green beneficiation plant which is typical of the newer large capacity plants being built in the field. Agrico's Fort Green mine was completed in 1975 and is located in the southwest corner of Polk County and is directly adjacent to Manatee, Hillsborough, and Hardee Counties. With some minor differences, Fort Green is typical of a modern central Florida plant. The rated capacity is 3,000,000 plus tons of product per year and this varies according to the richness of the ore being handled. A simplified flowsheet is presented in [Figs.1 and 2]. This plant is served by three draglines of the 40-cu-yd class. The phosphate beneficiation is usually divided into three major functional steps: (1) washing and screening to produce a pebble product and flotation feed, (2) feed preparation and (3) flotation to produce concentrates. The typical plant is similarly divided into these three functional areas. Washer: Briefly, the slurried matrix is pumped from two draglines simultaneously at a combined rate of about 20,000 gpm at 2000 tph (solids) to rotary trommel screens sized to make a 7/8-in. separation. ([See Fig. 1]-) The trommel oversize is sent to hammermills where it is crushed and returned to the trommel screens, or pumped to tailings if minor impurities (Fe203, A1203, MgO) are too high. The trommel undersize is pumped to 14 mesh stationary (static) flat screens. The flat screen over¬size is subjected to three stages of 14 mesh vibrating screening and two stages of log washing in order to produce a final pebble product. The pebble product (+ 14 mesh material) is conveyed by belt conveyor to a large on-ground storage pile. Pebble product is reclaimed through a tunnel and loading system below

The potential application of magnetic and electric separation techniques in beneficiation of fine-particle feeds are reviewed. Special features of these techniques are considered and compared with a view to increased amenability of such feeds to separation in electro- magnetic fields. The following techniques are discussed, with reference to those already developed and in use to-date: - Differential-susceptibility separation (DSF). - High-gradient differential-dielectric separation (HGDDS). - High-gradient magneto-gravimetric separation (HGMGS). In this context the new approach - whereby selectivity of solid- solid separation processes, in wet high-gradient magnetic and electric separation, can be improved - is described, including experimental results from DSF and HGDDS tests.

INTRODUCTION Mineral explorationists range throughout the world looking for mineral deposits which can subsequently be made into mines. Mines are not found! Mines are made, usually at great cost and not often without significant risk. The process of making a mineral deposit into a mine involves a great deal more than a complete appraisal of the deposit. The making of a mine demands detailed feasibility studies of many factors, any one of which, if shown to be negative, could prevent the deposit from becoming a successful mine. Total feasibility analysis involves at least three major fields of study: (1) economic analysis, (2) financial analysis, and (3) political and environmental analysis. Economic analysis is essential for proper decision making at many stages in the evaluation of a mineral deposit. It is the yardstick by which the proposed mining project and alter- native investment opportunities are measured. Economic analysis is concerned with costs and potential profits and can be applied at various stages in the evaluation of a mineral deposit to determine if the project merits the additional funds necessary to bring about each succeeding stage. The nearer any deposit approaches to becoming a mine, the more carefully the economic analysis should be made. Financial analysis has reference to how, where, and at what cost the investment funds can be obtained to finance the proposed mine project. Political and environmental analysis has reference to the many intangible factors that can affect the making of a successful mine. These factors loom larger today than ever before, due to the profusion of government regulations and various environmental constraints now imposed upon the mineral industry both by law and by the weight of public opinion. Ultimately, many of these intangible factors can be resolved back into the economic analysis as an added cost to mine development, but more and more often they have become insurmountable obstacles to any development of certain deposits. The role of financial analysis and the analysis of intangible factors must never be underestimated when making a feasibility study upon which to base investment decisions; however, the emphasis of this text will be upon economic factors. THE PARAMETERS OF MINERAL ECONOMIC ANALYSIS The two major elements of economic analysis are: 1) The potential earnings or annual generated cash flow of the project. 2) The investment costs necessary to realize such earnings. If the difference between the two elements is large enough, i.e., if the return on investment from the cash flow is high enough to attract investors, the project can be said to be financially feasible. The mineral economic analysis must take into consideration many parameters, some of which are known or knowable within certain limits, and others of which are unknown or unpredictable within certain limits and for which estimates must be made. Because both known and estimated parameters enter into the same analytical computations, it is important for the analyst to realize the nature of each when considering the results of an analysis. Some parameters such as the grade of mining block, although estimated, are said to be known within mathematically defined limits. Other parameters, such as the future price for minerals produced, etc., can only be estimated or "guestimated" within reasonable limits for which no precision can be assigned. Known or Knowable Mineral Economic Parameters Known or knowable parameters are: 1) Tonnage and grade of valuable minerals for the total mineral body and for individual mining blocks. 2) Metallurgical recovery of valuable mineral. 3) Minimum operating life of mineral de- posit at any specified production rate. 4) Royalty schedule, property payments, etc. 5) Sales-purchasing agreements, smelter schedules, marketing contracts, etc.

An attempt is made to explain differences in the size-by-size response to flotation of some sulphide minerals. Physical factors involved in particle-bubble collision and adhesion, and also in possible subsequent disruption of aggregates, are considered especially in relation to flotation of the coarser sizes. Emphasis is on practical observations and their significance, with an essentially qualitative theoretical treatment designed to form hypotheses for further experiments. In particular, the theoretical effects of contact angle and induction time are examined. An argument is developed which suggests a rapid increase in induction time as particle size increases, except for particles small enough to be moving under laminar flow conditions. This can adequately explain poor recoveries of coarse particles in flotation without a need to assume disruption of particle-bubble aggregates in turbulent zones in a flotation cell. Flotation recovery is shown to be very sensitive to small changes in induction time. Consideration of the physics of disruption of particle-bubble aggregates leads to the conclusion that this mechanism does not adequately explain differences in flotation recovery of coarser sizes of some sulphide minerals. For example, to explain differences in recovery of coarse galena and chalcopyrite by this mechanism would necessitate accepting that conditioning with ethyl xanthate which would promote a 60º contact angle at a galena surface would promote only an 11º angle at a chalcopyrite surface. Small differences in induction time arising from differences in surface chemical characteristics of the various minerals offer a more satisfactory explanation of differences in recovery of coarser sizes.

The structure of flotation reagents is important for their adsorption on mineral surfaces and thus for their flotation effectiveness. The influence of the structure of organic depressants on the flotation of fluorite and barite with anionic and cationic collectors was investigated using a modified Hallimond microflotation cell. In addition, adsorption, desorption, and electrokinetic results were employed to further elucidate the role and the correlation of the structural parameters for adsorption and the depressing effect. As hydrophilic reagents, different aliphatic and aromatic compounds capable of forming chelates with alkaline earth materials were used. For the depressing effect, the kind, number, and position of the polar groups in the molecule, as well as the structure of the reagent films play decisive roles.

Extensive research, ,development and plant application work has been done on automatic control systems for wet grinding and sulphide flotation circuits during the past twenty years. The result is that there is a good understanding of the process mechanisms, the effects which changes in different variables have on these processes, the procedure for design of control systems to satisfy particular objectives and the problems in the implementation of control systems. There is also an appreciation of the problems which are still to be solved. These are reviewed briefly in this paper. Other processes used for the beneficiation of fine particles have been studied in lesser detail. The control of dry grinding, coal flotation and gravity separation are mentioned briefly in this paper.

During the 1920's, approximately 11,000 small gasifiers were in operation in the United States. They converted about 15 million tons (13.6 Mt) of coal per year into low Btu gas. In some cases, hot raw gas was used for applications such as firing open hearth furnaces or brick kilns. In other cases the gases produced in the gasifiers were cooled, cleaned and desulfurized for various utility and industrial purposes. The steel industry was by far the largest user. The most important fact was that the conversion of coal to a usable fuel gas was demonstrated to be commercial. During the late 1940's and early 1950's, this form of energy was largely replaced by natural gas as the pipeline net work was expanded. Producer gas was no longer economically competitive. Over the past 25 years, government controls on the interstate price of natural gas have maintained this situation. At present only three commercial small coal gasifier plants are still in operation in the United States. These facilities are operated

A number of novel but increasingly-important methods of size enlargement in liquid systems are reviewed. These techniques use relatively strong bonding and specialized equipment to form dense and substantially permanent agglomerates directly from particles in liquid suspension. In addition to separation of particles from suspensions, these methods have other broad objectives, including the production of granular (often spherical) materials, displacement of suspending liquid from the product and the selective agglomeration of one or more components of a multi-particle mixture. The underlying principles of the methods discussed include agglomeration by immiscible liquid wetting and by polymeric flocculants. Other procedures to produce granular, free-flowing products based on dispersion and solidification in liquids are also noted briefly. Applications in a variety of fine particle systems are considered with emphasis on minerals and fuels beneficiation and on waste treatment.

Several simplifications have been accepted in filtration theory during the past fifty years in an effort to avoid apparently intractable mathematical problems. In effect, these simplifications ignored the variation in average cake porosity and average filtration resistance with variation in pressure drop or with time. This study examines the traditional approach and shows that, in many cases, it cannot give correct design guidance. Using a set of dimensionless parameters because of the large number of significant variables, a revised theory is developed which does not require that porosity and resistance values be set constant. Graphs developed in the traditional approach (e.g., dt/dv versus v or t/v versus V) have substantial curvature near the ordinate; but this curvature is frequently ignored in theory and is easily missed in experiments. The revised theory allows more accurate design calculations, especially for compressible cakes.
