With the postwar emergency for new housing and for new industrial buildings, much research has been done on lightweight aggregates for use in concrete and plaster. The trend toward lighter weight aggregates to relieve the dead load on the higher, steel framework buildings started toward the end of the last century. Progressively the requirements became more stringent, crushed bank slag, weighing 80 lb per cu ft as compared to 100 lb for crushed rock, was supplemented in some sections by foamed slags and expanded shales weighing from 40 to 60 lb per cu ft. In other sections cinders were used weighing from 40 to 50 lb, including sand. Sections favored with more recent vulcanism turned to pumice weighing from 30 to 60 lb, whereas other localities made use of diatomite, from 28 to 40 lb. Exfoliated vermiculite weighing from only 6 to 10 lb per cu ft came into use. As the search for lighter weights in aggregates continued so did the search for other desirable properties such as nailability, ease of cutting or channeling, and good insulation to both sound and heat. This search eventually led to a widespread interest in the expansion of perlite, or similar volcanic glasses, with the result that in 1946, the Office of the Housing Expediter' listed eleven firms reporting the operation of processing plants either on pilot or commercial scale producing aggregates weighing from 2 to 16 lb per cu ft. Geology Perlite is one of the large family of rocks originating from a granitic or acidic magma and generally has a "rhyolitic composition with a marked perlitic structure."² The name "perlite" is a derivation from "perlstein" originally given "to certain glassy rocks (hyaloliparites, hyalo-rhyolites) with numerous concentric cracks, from the fancied resemblance of broken out fragments to pearls."3 The cause of the perlitic texture is somewhat controversial. Johannsen attributes the texture to strain set up in the glass by cooling and describes the finding of peculiar, glassy balls, called marekanite, more or less rounded and showing concave indentations, which may be left when perlite is broken. Frank Rutley, on the other hand, in 1881, while working on vitreous rocks from Montana, observed that there was incipient or partially started crystallization with segregation of water toward the un-crystallized portion in all specimens of perlite examined. Further he observed evidence of strain around focii of crystallization to which he ascribed the development of the spherical cracking which gives the rock its perlitic texture.4 Widespread over the western and southwestern United States where Tertiary vulcanism is exposed, perlite commonly is associated with andesitic, basaltic, and rhyolitic lavas with inter-bedded tuffs and ash of Eocene age although some deposits are associated with rocks assigned to the Pliocene age.5, 6 n nearly all cases the perlite overlies water laid tuff beds or agglomerates or breccias of explosive nature, an outstanding exception being the occurrence of perlite as the chilled selvage of andesite intrusions.7'8 Available chemical analyses of per-lites from the western and southwestern United States indicate that they are varieties of leucorhyolites rather than of normal rhyolites, leucorhyolites having less than 5 pct of dark minerals, normal rhyolites having more than 5 pct. This conforms with Johannsen's observation that leucorhyolites are the prevailing kind in North America.9 Tables 1 and 2 give

Electrolytic extraction of carbides from quenched and tempered steel and their examination under the electron microscope were found to be helpful in understanding the mechanism of secondary hardening in alloy steels1 and the same technique has been applied to isothermally transformed steels. A preliminary survey of the utility of the method has indicated that it has promising possibilities for investigating the characteristics of pearlite and bainite. The examination of a few carbon and chromium steels has suggested that pearlite is formed with carbides of two varieties representing the lamellar and nonlamellar forms and that bainite appears to form with a structure analogous to, but significantly different from, martensite. Procedure The method used for examining the carbides was similar to that described previously.1 The chromium steels used in the investigation were made from an Armco iron base in an induction furnace and were not treated with grain-refining deoxidizers. The composition of the steels is given in Table 1. Three-inch square ingots were forged and rolled to 1/8-in. thick sheet for use in the isothermal studies. After rolling, the sheets were sandblasted to remove the rolling scale. Specimens approximately 3/4-in. wide and l1/2-in. long were prepared from the 1/8-in. sheet. They were heated in a salt "bath at 2100°F (1150°C) for 1/2 hour, transferred to other salt baths at 1300°F (704°C), 1000°F (538°C), 800°F (426°C), or 600°F (315°C), held for various periods up to 100 hr and finally quenched in water. After quenching, the specimens were cut in half, one half being submitted to microscopic examination and the other half being used for the electrolytic extraction. The isothermally transformed specimens were submitted to examination under the light microscope to determine the degree of transformation and type of structure and were photographed at 2000 X. Carbide residues were obtained by electrolyzing in 10 pet hydrochloric acid and collecting the residue in glycerine to minimize attack by the acid. As pointed out in the earlier paper, the carbides are attacked to some degree during electrolysis. This attack is relatively minor on the coarser carbides but may be quite severe on the fine bainitic carbides. The residues were washed free of the glycerine with water and alcohol. The alcohol was removed by repeated washings of amyl acetate, and the amyl acetate suspensions were transferred to stoppered vials. Debye-Sherrer X ray diffraction patterns of the residues were prepared using a chromium target. A selection based on the microstructure and X ray data was then made of samples considered most illustrative of the progress of transformation. Electrolytically extracted residues from these samples were submitted to examination by W. D. Forgeng and A. C. Jenkins on the electron microscope at the Research Laboratories of The Linde Air Products Co. and electron micrographs were made at X 5000 and enlarged to 25,000 X. The micrographs obtained with both the light and the electron microscopes are mounted side by side in the accompanying figures. Although no effort was made to establish the T-T-T diagram for the chromium steels, the times for holding in the salt bath were adjusted with the intention of making the samples represent different stages in the transformation at temperatures of 600, 800, 1000, and 1300°F. The degrees of transformation and results of X ray examination are shown in Tables 2—4. The carbide designations refer to orthorhombic or trigonal carbide types and are not meant to imply that the compositions are exactly as indicated. X ray Diffraction Data The occurrence of Fe3C and Cr7C3 in these steels was found to be consistent with published data on comparable chromium steels. THE Star shaft is near the north boundary of the group of mining claims belonging to the Ground Hog Unit of the American Smelting and Refining Co., near Vanadium, N. Mex. The shaft bins and surface plant are served by a siding from the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad, and this factor of railroad transportation influenced the choice of site. This paper describes the shaft sinking only, and does not cover the surface plant or other parts of the mine or its equipment. Experience with this shaft seems of interest because of the mechanical mucking, good rate of progress, and the costs obtained at the present level of labor and material costs. The shaft has four compartments, as shown in fig. 1. Equipment: Riddell Mucker: The mucking was done by a clamshell bucket and a Riddell mucker, which, as in other shafts sunk with this machine, consisted of a carriage mounted on axles with double flanged wheels that traveled back and forth on a swinging track, parallel to the long axis of the shaft (fig. 2 to 6). Three air motors were mounted on the carriage; one hoisted the clam, one operated the bucket opening and closing device, and the third moved the carriage along the track. The carriage was designed with guide shoes and could be hoisted to the surface in either skip compartment without trouble (fig. 4). During blasting operations the clam was tied on the rails and the carriage was hoisted up a few sets to protect it from flying rock. No attempt was made to hoist the carriage and clam together lest the clam catch in the timbers. The track on which the carriage operated was built of extra heavy 6 in. pipe with 1x2 in. strap welded on top for rails. A 1/2x4 in. angle was welded on the bottom of the 6 in. pipe with a 1 in. round rod welded in the angle for a filler and additional strength. The end or cross pieces of the track which kept the track to gauge, were also made of reinforced, heavy 6 in. pipe and were bolted to the long members on which the carriage traveled (fig. 2 and 3). This section of track was used, instead of heavy railroad rails, for two reasons: (1) this section would bend before it snapped and was much safer for the men in the bottom; and (2) it was a better blasting shield, and protected the timbers better, in fact, only five wall plates were broken by blasting in 1926 ft of shaft, although 150 to 225 lb of 40 pct powder was loaded per round, depending on the ground conditions. The swinging track was supported by four 5/s in. hoisting cables anchored to the end plates. There were also four safety cables fastened two to three sets above the carriage, which would catch the carriage if one of the supporting cables should fail for any reason (fig. 7). Clamshell Buckets: Two clams were used, each of 3/s yard capacity, both manufactured by Blaw Knox, Nos. 662 and 663. The No. 663 clam was 4 in. wider and 5 in. shorter than the No. 662, but seemed to dig and load more satisfactorily. It was easier to hoist and lower when it came up for repair. The purpose of presenting this paper is to show: 1. The applications of aerial photography to the map requirements of strip mining. 2. The methods and procedures for producing accurate aerial contour maps. 3. The advantages of aerial contour mapping over stadia or plane table methods. Introduction Aerial photography was once a crude, uncertain tool. 'Today it is a precision mapping instrument which saves important time and money for strip mining and other industry. Aerial photography began in the boxkite days of aviation. The Army first used it for rough reconnaissance photographs. Then, in the early Twenties, industry began to use aerial photographs of their plants and facilities for advertising or annual reports. The quality of these pictures was not very good by today's standards, but this work began the development of better cameras, better lenses, better photographic techniques. Then, some farsighted engineers and aerial photographers found that if the camera's axis were vertical to the earth's surface, these pictures could be the source of valuable mapping information. By viewing these pictures in stereoscopic pairs, accurate measurements could be made and contour maps produced from this aerial photographic base. So the aerial mapping business developed, using the plane and aerial camera to collect the data, working with skilled ground parties who established a network of ground control for this map information photographed from the air. Over the following years, a whole new science developed, known as photogrammetry. Precision cameras and lenses were perfected, and the narrow view of the surveyor's transit was broadened to the vast perspective of the mapping plane. Stereoscopic Coverage Obtained Today in making aerial topographic maps, aerial photographs are exposed so that full stereoscopic coverage for the survey area is secured. To obtain true elevations these photographs are processed through a series of precision measuring and contouring instruments which employ a principle similar to the military range finder. Here is how aerial mapping is being used by your industry. Topographic maps are but one of three products from aerial photographic surveys. First, there are the individual photographs. These are taken in flight strips, exposed with an overlap, just as shingle on a roof overlap. Exposures are overlapped from 55 to 60 pct along the line of flight so that a large part of the area in one picture also appears on the adjacent photograph. Successive strips are flown with a side-lap of between 20 and 25 pct. Each point on the ground thus will be somewhere near the center of at least one photograph in the series. They may be studied under a stereoscope and relief seen in a third dimensional effect. Geologic features that may go unobserved in ground exploration are often detected under stereoscopic inspection. Moreover, though field checking is not obviated with these aerial photographs, it is directed toward critical areas and toward worthwhile anomalies. Aerial Photographic Mosaics The second product of an aerial survey is the photographic mosaic. This is an assembly of carefully matched aerial photographs in mosaic form. Although not as accurate as the topographic map, it does reveal a wealth of cultural detail in true relative scale. Since the mapping plane is flown over the area at a fixed altitude, the peaks and valleys are pictured at different scales. During compilation these scale differences are compensated by adjusting one vertical picture to another according to plotted ground control positions. The history of the salt industry in West Virginia dates back nearly two hundred years; howTever, the history of salt as an important raw material for the chemical industry is much more recent. The earliest record of West Virginia salt was in 1753, when a raiding party of Shawnee Indians attacked frontier settlements in Virginia taking captive a number of the pioneers. One of these, who later escaped and returned to her friends, described how the Indians camped at a salt spring on the banks of the Kanawha River and evaporated the water to obtain a supply of salt to take back to Ohio with them. Settlement of the Kanawha Valley began in 1774, that same year the Battle of Point Pleasant ended the Indian's power in the Ohio Valley; and settlement of the Kanawha Valley progressed rapidly with a consequent increase in the importance of the Kanawha Licks as a source of salt. In those days the evaporation of the brine was a family matter for which the family wash-kettle was commandeered. In 1797, Elisha Brooks erected the first salt furnace in the Kanawha Valley. It consisted of two dozen small kettles set in a double row, with a flue beneath, a chimney at one end, and a fire bed at the other. He obtained his brine at a depth of 20 to 30 ft by sinking hollow logs, called "gums" into the salt lick and dipping the brine with a bucket. His production was about 150 lb a day and sold for 8 to 10 cents a pound. In 1806, the Ruffner brothers, David and Joseph, prospected for and drilled the first well in America using a spring pole and steel chisel bit. After several failures they succeeded, in 1808, in drilling to a total depth of 59 ft where they secured a good flow of strong brine. Most standard drilling tools, jars, casing, and practically all the basic oil well drilling machinery now in use, were developed in the drilling of salt wells. To evaporate this brine, the brothers built a wood-burning furnace similar to that of Brooks but with a better arrangement and with more and larger kettles. When production was started they reduced the price of salt to 4 cents a pound. By 1817, there were some 30 salt furnaces in the Kanawha area. It was in this year that bituminous coal first was used as an industrial fuel. David Ruffner again pioneered the way by converting his furnace for the consumption of coal. This year also brought about the formation of the first trust which controlled production and set a price of 1 cent a pound for the salt.

Since water is present in natural gas and petroleum reservoirs, it is of engineering value to have accurate experimental data regarding the behavior of water in hydro-carbon systems. Since experimental data of this nature are so scarce in literature, a program is under way at the University of Texas to obtain experimental data regarding the distribution of water in petroleum hydrocarbons. This initial paper is subdivided into three parts: A. The apparatus and analytical procedure are discussed. B. The equipment has been checked by comparing the experimental data with data of literature on the solubility of methane in water at 77°F and pressures to 10,000 psia. C. Experimental data are presented at 100, 160, 220, 280, and 340°F on the solubility of ethane in water at pressures to 1200 psia. As the temperature is increased the solubility of ethane in water first exhibits a minimum and then a maximum solubility. The range of applicability of Henry's Law is discussed. INTRODUCTION Although considerable experimental data have been published on water-hydrocarbon systems in the hydrate region, the information on these systems in the vapor-liquid and the vapor-liquid- 'References are given at end of paper. A survey of the literature on hydrocarbon-water systems at elevated pressures was presented by McKetta and Katz12,13,14 showing the systems and phases investigated. In addition to these existing published data, Poettman and Dean" have reported the water content of propane in the three-phase region (only the propane-rich liquid and the vapor phases were studied) and Michels, et al.15 have reported the solubility of methane in water at pressures to 6800 pounds per square inch at 77°F and at pressures to 1500 psia at temperatures to 300°F. It has been shown12,14 that the presence of water will materially affect the phase equilibrium of hydrocarbon systems. In order to make experimental studies on the quantitative effect of the presence of water in naturally-occurring hydrocarbon systems, it is desirable to have data available on binary hydrocarbon-water systems. A program is underway at this laboratory to determine the phase relations of the hydrocarbon-water systems. Initially the investigation will be limited to binary systems with water as one of the components. Later ternary and complex systems will be investigated and reported. EQUIPMENT AND ANALYTICAL PROCEDURE Apparatus In order to avoid a description of the methods employed in each subsequent paper, a description of the apparatus and the analytical procedure will be given here. The apparatus is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The numbered items in Fig. 1 represent the high pressure valves. The equilibrium cell is of the totally enclosed type, with a volume of 550 cubic centimeters. The cell is mounted in an air bath which in turn is mounted on pillow blocks and connected to a rocking mechanism so that the cell and bath will oscillate approximately 30 degrees above and below the horizontal at 35 oscillations per minute. The air bath is heated by two resistance heaters. The first or primary heater is 250 watts and is controlled by a thermoregulator; the second heater is of 500-watt size and is manually controlled to aid in bringing the cell to equilibrium temperature. Air circulation in the bath is accomplished by means of a fan. the shaft of which is concentric to the heaters. The walls of the bath are insulated with 2-in. thick blocks of 85 per cent magnesia. Temperature observations are made with three calibrated thermocouples. One couple is sealed in a well provided within the equilibrium cell, and is used as the criterion of the cell being at the equilibrium temperature. The other two thermocouples are located on opposite sides of the cell to indicate temperature uniformity within the air bath. The thermoregulator, used in conjunction with a relay, gives a variation in the temperature of the air in the bath of plus or minus one degree Fahrenheit. As a result of using copper-containing scrap in the steelmaking process, the copper content of steels has been steadily increasing for years. Consequently the possible role copper may play in the steelmaking process and in the finished product begins to attract the metallurgists' attention. Some time ago one of the present authors forwarded the idea—based on the results of the analysis of nonmetallic inclusions extracted electrolytically from steels—that sulphur in plain carbon steels is distributed mainly between copper and manganese, the amount of iron sulphide being very small; and that, consequently, the problem of copper and that of sulphur in steel cannot be treated separately.' At the time of the publication of the quoted paper little was known about the relative affinities of copper and manganese for sulphur at high temperatures except that at moderate temperatures (below 1000°C) the affinity of manganese for sulphur is much greater. To gather more experimental data on this subject, the present authors undertook the investigation of the equilibrium constants of the reactions: 2Mn(8 or 1) + S2(g) = 2MnS(s) 4Cu(s or 1) + S2(g) = 2Cu2S (S or I)* 2Fe(s) + S2(g) = 2FeS (s or 1) over a range of temperatures wide enough to establish the dependence of these equilibrium constants on temperature. From the equilibrium constants (K = l/Ps2) the free energy of formation (affinity) can be calculated from F° = -RTln 1/PSt (1) where the standard conditions chosen are: 1 atm of sulphur pressure and the activities of condensed components equal one. The decomposition pressure, Ps2, of sulphur over the respective sulphides is too small to be measured directly, but there is a way of eliminating this difficulty by measuring the equilibrium constant of the reaction between the sulphide and hydrogen. From the latter and from the equilibrium constant of the thermal dissociation of H2S we then calculate Ps2 for the respective sulphide. 2Mn + 2H2S = 2MnS + 2H, 2H2 + S2 = 2H2S_________ 2Mn + S2 = 2MnS The numerical values of the equilibrium constant of the thermal dissociation of H2S at different temperatures were taken from Kelley's paper, "The Thermodynamic Properties of Sulfur and its Inorganic Compounds."² In previous experimental work published by Jellinek and Zakowski3 and by Britzke and Kapustinsky4 the equilibrium constants of the reactions Metal sulphide + H2 = H2S + metal were determined by passing hydrogen, at different rates of flow, over the sulphide, analyzing the resulting H2S + H2 mixture and then extrapolating the H2S/H2 ratio (which is a function of the rate of flow) to the zero speed of flow, a method necessarily involving considerable uncertainty. In the present work the equilibrium ratio was actually measured instead of being extrapolated. The apparatus is shown in Fig 1. Experimental Procedure The sulphides were prepared by the following methods: FeS Powdered iron which had been reduced with hydrogen (ferrum reduc-tum) was mixed in stoichiometric ratio with sublimed sulphur and carefully ground. The mixture was put into an alundum crucible, covered with pure sulphur, and the reaction started by touching the mixture with a glowing iron rod. After the reaction was completed the product (still containing some metallic iron) was again ground with sulphur, put into a Rose crucible, covered with sulphur, and heated in a strong current of pure hydrogen. Analysis of the final product showed 62.46 pct Fe and 36.59 pct S. Theoretical for FeS: 63.53 pct Fe and 36.47 pct S. MnS Manganese sulphide (precipitated and carefully washed with distilled water containing H2S) was dried in a Rose crucible in an atmosphere of H2S and heated in a current of hydrogen for 2 hr at red heat. The product was then ground and ignited for several hours at 1000°C in a current of hydrogen sulphide. Analysis showed 64.53 pct Mn and 36.63 pct S. Theoretical: 63.15 pct Mn and 36.85 pct S. Some MnS samples were prepared from metallic manganese and sublimed sulphur by mixing and grinding them and then heating in a current of hydrogen sulphide in an alundum tube.

A method of determining the lime content of drilling muds proposed by Battle and Chaney* has been examined both in the Field Research Laboratories of Magnolia Petroleum Co. and in field drilling operations. This proposed analytical method is condensed as follows: Titrate one ml of mud and one ml of mud filtrate, each with 0.02 N H2SO4, to the end point with phenolphthalein. The volume of acid in ml required for the mud titration is recorded as Pm and that of the mud filtrate titration as Pf Calculation of the lb lime/bbl mud is accomplished by use of the formula, lb lime/bbl mud = 0.6 (Pm - 1.3Pf) - 0.6 The analytical procedure outlined by Battle and Chaney was found to be quite satisfactory when reasonable precautions are used in mud sampling technique. Calculation of lime concentration by the method proposed in the above publication, however, has given values that varied as much as 100 per cent from the known lime content, for muds of either high or low solids concentration. By use of a formula, lb lime/bbl mud = 0.26 (Pm-F1.Pf), based on chemical equivalents of acid required for titration, both laboratory and field data have been satisfactorily correlated with the known amounts of lime present in the muds. In this formula a correction, F1, or volume fraction of liquid in the mud, is made for the solid content of the mud. Pm and Pf * Paper on "Lime Base Muds," presented by J. L. Table I shows typical data employing both formulas in calculating the lime content of various lime muds. This suggested procedure ignores lime which is in solution in the mud. The solubility of lime in water, normally about 0.5 lb per bbl, is greatly decreased by the addition of caustic soda, and, in a lime mud, it is probable that the concentration of dissolved lime is of the order of 0.1 lb per bbl. Such an amount of lime can be ignored, since it is within the range of accuracy of the method.

ROLLER—As one who has been privileged to read Mr. Poland's paper before its publication, I wish to express high praise for it and the record which it gives of the work done by the Research and Development Department of Revere Copper and Brass Inc. in developing a satisfactory furnace for the recovery of metallic zinc from secondary metals by distillation. I have also had the opportunity of studying the operation of the furnace when running on scrap brass at the Detroit plant of Revere, and I can therefore say from knowledge gained first-hand that the unit is efficient and economical when used in conjunction with distillation. However, when I read what Mr. Poland has to say in reference to the possibility of using the furnace for melting copper cathodes for the production of oxygen-free and tough-pitch copper shapes, I am constrained to be somewhat skeptical. No doubt the furnace can readily be modified so as to make it possible to melt cathodes, but that is only a part of what is required to produce refinery shapes. Because of its construction the atmosphere in the furnace is highly reducing and even without protective gases such as nitrogen the copper cathodes which are

In a previous technical note' by Walter Rose, evidence is offered in support of the contention that "the possibility of describing oil recovery features in terms of capillary pressure phenomena has not been established entirely." It is not the purpose of this note to present further discussion of this possibility but rather to point out that the argument presented there does not appear to be generally valid. In the cited note' reference is made to the experiments of Welge2 wherein it was shown that when water was displaced by oil from a core the pressure in the water phase was less than in the oil phase but that when this oil was then produced by water drive the pressure in the water phase was greater than in the oil phase. Rose has concluded from these observations that conditions of static equilibrium did not obtain since the fluid saturations were such that phase discontinuities seemed unlikely. The argument from which this conclusion was drawn is based on the contention that "the pressure is always greatest in the non-wetting phase at each static interstitial interface of contact with the wetting phase." This premise appears to have been reached from a consideration of capillary phenomena in cylindrical tubes, although it may a1so hold for other types of pore geometry, hut as will be shown below it does not hold for all pore shapes and hence is not generally applicable. Since the pore structure of porous media such as reservoir rocks i- in general so complex as to defy exact description. it is undoubtedly of great value to establish a model in terms of pore shapes of known geometry, provided of course that the limitations of the model are recognized. That the limitations of the capillary. or cylindrical, tube model have not always been fully recognized will be evident from the following discussion of a pore of different shape hut one which may a. logically he considered a.; the capillary tube. The pore space to be considered is that shown in Fig. 1, which may be thought of as the "hole in a doughnut."* Consider the interface, A-B-A', between two immiscible fluids, P, and P2, which interface meets the solid alone a line, A-C.A'-C'. A. C. RICHARDSON*—First of all, [ think that the paper represents a lot more work, study, and correlation than has been indicated by the brief talk by Mr. Price. I like the way he started out and described the areas from which the samples were obtained, the locations of the washing plants, the available tonnages, and other background information with which to evaluate the data he submitted later on. Then I like the way in which he described the various types of washing plants, the tonnages handled and the difficulties of the washing problems; showing the amount of material that lies close to the specific gravity at which the washing separation is made. Later he gave figures from washing plant operations showing recoveries and cleaning efficiencies. He then discussed his own plant at Pueblo. It is the same old plant, I think, that I worked around a good many years ago. It is unusual to find a plant treating nearly 5000 tons of coal a day on tables. But this table plant is, I believe, more efficient than is indicated by the figures that Mr. Price gave. To determine the efficiency of a cleaning operation or to compare it with another it is necessary to consider the quantity and character of the material close to the specific gravity at which the separation is made. It is not fair, I believe, to penalize the table operation by something like 4 pct of out-of-place-material as he has done here. The variety and difficulty of the coals that he has to wash, the continuous shift and change in their composition make a very difficult cleaning problem and the table performance is excellent. I believe that the information in this paper will be of interest and value to anyone operating or planning to build a coal cleaning plant in this or other areas; particularly where the cleaning of fine coal is a problem. The data may be used for comparative purposes in determining the relative efficiencies of other cleaning plant separations. E. D. HAIGLER*—What is a Baum jig? J. D. PRICE (authors' reply)—A Baum-type jig is one in which the pulsations of the water is secured by means of a pulsating air current applied on top of the water. I imagine you are all familiar with the old plunger-type jig which is in effect a U tube in which a plunger on one side of the U, moving up and down, causes a corresponding pulsation on the far side of the jig. In the Baum jig, the pulsating air current is applied on the surface of the water on one side of the U tube of the jig and gives a corresponding pulsation on the other. It is also commonly known as a pneumatic jig. The control of the rise and fall of the water in the jig body proper is under much better control than it is in any of the other type jigs. Mr. Richardson could enlarge on that feature, for I know that he has had considerable experience with these jigs. A. C. RICHARDSON—You have asked how to control a Baum-type jig. The pulsations in a Baum jig can be modified and regulated to a marked degree by the amount of water admitted to the jig and by the adjustments of the valve which regulates the manner in which air is admitted. The number of pulsations per minute is controlled by the number of cycles of the air valve. Thirty to forty cycles per minute is a good speed for large jigs treating coarse sizes of cod. With an air valve it is possible to modify the time-velocity curve of the pulsating water to some extent which in turn determines the action in a jig bed. Within limits the following parts of the air valve cycle may be regulated: (1) the rate and period of air admission, (2) the period of air expansion, (3) the rate and period of air exhaust, and (4) the period of air compression. The rate and period of air admission determines the acceleration of the water at the beginning of the pulsion stroke and the amplitude of the stroke. The period of air expansion, after inlet port is closed, is one in which the water has reached the desired velocity, positive acceleration reduced, and the bed held in a mobile condition. The rate and period of the air exhaust can be adjusted to modify the degree of suction and so modify the manner in which the particles in the bed stratify. The compression period, alter the exhaust port closes and before the intake port opens may be used to advantage in retarding the downward velocity of water during the suction stroke. An ideal jig stroke is one in which during the up stroke the bed is lifted slowly in a mass and opens up like an accordian with the bottom layers dropping away first. With the bed open and mobile the particles adjust themselves according to their hindered settling rates. During the down stroke, while the bed is still open the particles of high specific gravity are accelerated toward the bottom layers. It is possible to approach this stroke with all types of jigs but it is less difficult to approximate it with a Baum jig.

When manganese ores are leached with sulphur dioxide, a large part of any zinc in the ore usually is extracted with the manganese.1 In the dithionate process,2,3 in which the manganese ore is leached with dilute sulphur dioxide gas and the manganese is subsequently precipitated by adding lime to the pregnant solution, the zinc is precipitated with the manganese. These facts suggested the possibility of applying the dithionate process to the recovery of zinc from oxidized ores or calcined sulphide concentrates. Accordingly, an investigation was begun, and preliminary tests were made on several ores and concentrates. The results were encouraging, but the need to devote available funds and personnel to other projects made it necessary to drop the work before the various factors involved in the process could be studied in detail. A brief mention of the process,4 however, elicited a number of inquiries, so that it appeared desirable to report the results of the preliminary work. The dithionate process as applied to zinc may be summarized briefly as follows: The ore or calcined concentrate is leached with dilute SO2 gas to dissolve the zinc, largely as zinc sulphate, in accordance with the following equation in which [ZnO] represents the "oxide zinc" in the ore or calcine: [ZnO] + SO2(g) + 1/2 O2 = Zn++SO4— [1] If, in the leaching step, the ore or calcine is suspended in calcium dithionate solution, the sulphate ion, as it is formed, is precipitated immediately as calcium sulphate, which is subsequently filtered off with the insoluble ore residue: Zn++SO4— + Ca++S2O6— = CaSO4(s) + Zn++S2O6- [2] An alternative procedure is to suspend the ore in water, filter off the insoluble ore residue after leaching, add calcium dithionate to the resulting zinc sulphate solution, and then filter off the calcium sulphate precipitate. In either event the zinc is obtained in the form of a pregnant solution of zinc dithionate, from which it can be precipitated as relatively pure zinc hydroxide by adding milk of lime: Zn++S2O6— + Ca(OH), = Zn(OH)2(s) + Ca++S2O6- [3] The zinc hydroxide precipitate is calcined to form the final zinc oxide product: Zn(OH)2 = ZnO(s) + H2O(g) [4] Theoretically the process is completely cyclic with respect to dithionate ion, the calcium dithionate required for reaction 2 being replaced by that formed in reaction 3. In practice, of course, small amounts of dithionate would be lost in the various filter cakes, depending on the economic washing limits. In the leaching step, however, some of the SO2 is oxidized to dithionale instead of sulphate, accord- ing to the following overall reaction: ZnO + 2SO2(g) + 1/2 O2(g) = Zn++S2O6-, [5] so that the dithionate losses are made up, at least in part. Ores and Concentrates Tested The analyses of the ores and concentrates tested are summarized in Table 1, which also includes the analyses of the calcines produced from the concentrates. The concentrates were roasted in a laboratory muffle furnace at the temperatures indicated until evolution of SO2 could no longer be detected; shallow clay dishes ordinarily were used; but calcines 2a and 2c were prepared in iron dishes, with the result that these two calcines were badly contaminated with iron scale. The "complex" concentrate, sample 1, consisted essentially of sphalerite grains containing inclusions of pyrite and other sulphide minerals too minute to be liberated by grinding within economic limits. In the " marmatitic" concentrate, sample 2, the iron was present largely as marmatite (that is, as iron sulphide in solid solution in zinc sulphide) rather than as pyrite inclusions. The zinc was present largely as the carbonate in the two "oxidized" ores, samples 3 and 4, and as the silicate in the "willemite" ore, sample 5. Leaching Tests The leaching cell was a 3-liter glass beaker placed in an electrically heated water bath manually controlled to maintain a temperature of 35°C in the leach slurry. A. R. POWELL*—Mr. Doherty has outlined in a most thorough manner valid arguments for the development of an industry in this country making syn. thetic liquid fuels from coal. No thoughtful person will dispute the statement that it is essential to carry on fundamental and applied research and acquire engineering "know-how" by the erection and operation of two or three large plants in the near future. Considerations of national security indicate that this should be done, irrespective of any temporary present surplus of natural petroleum. It is the belief of the discusser and of many others interested in coal technology that our energy picture of the future will include an increasing utilization of coal directly, without any conversion to liquid fuel, as a source of energy. A fact that is sometimes forgotten is that petroleum fuels have often been cheaper than coal in many locations and over long periods of time, and this price factor has been of great importance in expanding the use of petroleum fuels at the expense of coal. Synthetic liquid fuel made from coal must necessarily be several times as costly as the coal from which it is made, and this fact alone will have a profound effect on the future energy pattern of our country. This complete change in the economic relationship between solid and liquid fuels will lead to the substitution of coal itself for many uses now supplied by the relatively cheap petroleum fuels. From the standpoint of conservation of our natural resources, the substitution of coal itself for liquid fuels wherever possible when the age of synthetic liquid fuel arrives is also logical. At least 50 pct of the energy of coal is lost during conversion to liquid fuel. Nor is this com-pensated for by a higher utilization effi-ciency of the liquid fuel in most cases. For example, modern steam-boiler plants can operate at equal fuel efficiencies with either coal or fuel oil.

MANY processes for cleaning coal that are in use depend primarily on physical properties of coal and refuse other than specific gravity and surface conditions relating to froth flotation. These properties are shape, coefficient of sliding friction, resilience, friability, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical conductivity. In many of these processes specific gravity does have some effect and many separators are designed to utilize more than one of the physical properties cited. Although the processes described herein do not have a widespread application, yet for specific coals and specific conditions, they are economically important. A problem confronting many coal-mining districts is the marketing of the slacks or screenings and dust passing the final sizing screens. Processes in commercial use installed primarily to increase the form value, and hence the market value, of these slacks and dusts include briquetting, packaging, and low-temperature carbonization. MECHANICAL PICKERS Machines utilizing shape, frictional resistance, and differences in resilience of coal and impurities are usually called mechanical pickers. They require a closely sized feed, therefore their use is confined to the pea, nut, and egg sizes. Various types of these devices are described by Berrisford, 1, 2 Taggart,3 and Peele.4 Shape In general, coal differs in shape from its accompanying dirt throughout the range of commercial sizes. Coal, breaking into roughly cubical particles, contains a greater number of axes that are approximately the same length than does the dirt. The latter, consisting of pieces of slate and shale and lenses of pyrite, is flatter in nature. Further, flat coal often has a dirty, slaty appearance, even though of high quality. Mechanical pickers known as flat pickers, or "flatters," are widely used in the Pennsylvania anthracite region to remove flat coal .from the final clean coal. This practice greatly improves the appearance of the final market product. Flat pickers for removing impurities or flat coal ("flats") are usually installed on shaker screens, shaking conveyors, and chutes. In Fig. 1 three

A study of data obtained during laboratory tests to determine the suitability of bituminous coals for use in residential underfeed stokers of the clinkering type has led to the following general conclusions: 1. Performance data obtained during the test furnish useful and practical information upon which to judge the performance of stoker coals. 2. Conclusions derived from the results of evaluation tests are in general agreement with use experience of the coals in the field. The method is of practical use in this regard. 3. Few direct relationships were found between data furnished by the evaluation test and determinations by standard laboratory tests. This is particularly true with regard to coke formation and clinker formation, two of the most important factors in determining the degree of satisfaction to be obtained in applications of the small underfeed stoker. It has not been the intention in this paper to prescribe this evaluation test as the best method for the evaluation of coals for use in residential stokers. That there are other test methods having similar objectives serves to point out the necessity for full-scale laboratory tests. At the present time, a standard test procedure for the evaluation of coals for use in residential stokers is not available. For the past several years a joint committee, appointed from the membership of the Residential Stoker Committee of Bitulninous Coal Research, Inc., and from the Engineer- ing and Research Committee of The Stoker Manufacturers Association, has been working to develop a standard procedure for testing and evaluating bituminous stoker coals. This procedure has been completed to the extent that it has been drawn up in tentative form. It is now planned to install the equipment in several laboratories and to run check tests, using portions of identical lots of coal, to determine the degree of reproducibility offered by the method. Completion of this standard test procedure should greatly facilitate the evaluation of coals for use in residential stokers. Kaiser*—AS a former fuel engineer assigned to residential stokers at Battelle, the writer has read with considerable interest the paper by Messrs. I'urdy and Nelson. It is gratifying to note that earlier test techniques have been developed and that criteria found important in the years 1935 to 1938 are still important in judging the performance of stoker coals for residential heating. The authors have plotted a number of the primary coal data singly against performance data of the stoker in an effort to establish relationships. Unfortunately, wide scattering of points usually resulted, which did not illustrate what experience generally indicates to be the case. For example, Fig 3 indicates almost no trend in the percentage of released ash converted to clinker with change in ash-softening temperature. Other factors, such as fuel bed temperatures and zones of heat release must have influenced the results. In the present state of our knowledge, we cannot explain all of the reasons why suitable stoker coals perform satisfactorily, nor why one satisfactory coal may be better than another. Coal washing assumed an important role in the mining industry of the Pacific Northwest long before washing practice became firmly established in the Appalachian field. A Scaife washer was operated in the state of Washington in 1887; and by 1927, the fist year for which complete statistics were compiled, nearly a third of the state's coal production was washed, in comparison with only about 5 pct for the country as a whole. Mechanical preparation was adopted in Alaska in 1922 in a plant constructed by the United States Navy at Chickaloon to provide bunker coal for naval forces operating in northern waters. Many of the coal beds mined in Washington and Alaska contained more impurities than those mined elsewhere, and this circumstance contributed to the early interest in mechanical cleaning. A much more important factor, however, was the inclination of the coal beds. With steeply pitching beds, hand sorting by the miner at the face is impossible; consequently, all material must be loaded and dealt with on the surface, just as is now proving the case with mechanical mining of flat beds. Thus "full-seam" mining afforded the same stimulus to the early development of coal washing in the Northwest that it is providing under mechanization in the rest of the country today. Objeet and Scope ' This report is intended to provide a general summary of the status of coal-washing practice in Washington, Oregon, and Alaska—an area in which some of the coals mined are more difficult to wash than those mined elsewhere in the country. Detailed flowsheets of plants, statistical data on production, and cost figures have been omitted, largely for the sake of brevity but also because such information is principally of only local interest. On the other hand, considerable washability data have been included because they are Washington At present Washington leads all other states in the percentage of its total production that is cleaned mechanically, 82.1 pct in comparison with the national average of 25.6 pct in 1945.' The washing problems encountered in this state are highly variable because the mountain-building forces that created the Cascade Range caused such intense folding and faulting of the beds in some fields that the rank of the coal was increased to anthracitic, while in other fields more distant from the mountains the beds were relatively undisturbed, and the rank of the coal ranges down through subbituminous to lignitic. The complicated and burdensome schedule of sizes prepared in most coal fields has never been required by the Washington market. With but few exceptions, lump is prepared on a round-hole screen of about 3 in. size, egg is about 3 to 1 5/8 or 1½ in., and nut is 1 5/8 or 1½ in. to either 1 or ¾ in. Some mines screen no finer than ¾ in. and market a slack coal of that top size, but generally the coal is screened at about ¼ in. to give a stoker coal of ¾ or 1 to ¼ in., and a ¼ in. to 0 "buckwheat." The objective of this paper is to present practical methods of applying radioactivity logs to problems of interest both to those engaged in evaluating fundamental reservoir data as well as to those engaged in subsurface structural work. The basic theories underlying the operation of radioactivity logging methods are briefly discussed along with some of the problems arising in the interpretation of the log. Relative methods of quantitative interpretation are described, with a discussion of relative reference lines and specific examples are given showing the application of these relative quantitative interpretation methods. To show the variation of the methods described, specimen wells penetrating formations widely divergent in point of geologic age were selected to demonstrate the application. A relative reference line is determined for the Neutron Curve and by comparison to known petrophysical data such as porosities from diamond cores, a direct quantitative relationship is developed. The application of this relative calibration curve to logs of unknown wells will permit a reasonably accurate determination of porosity in limestone and dolomite formations. Specific examples are given showing the application of these relative methods of interpretation to logs of the Smackover limestone in Louisiana, the Edwards limestone and dolomites of South Texas, and Permian dolomites of West Texas. Radioactivity logs have been used extensively by the petroleum industry for a number of years and recognition of their value has grown steadily, not only as tools to aid in the solution of specific stratigraphic problems, but also as potential sources of the basic data necessary for the estimation of net pay and reserves. The value of radioactivity logs for stratigraphic work has been pointed out in the literature,1,2,4,5,6 and now has long been recognized by the industry, but the quantitative application of the logs has advanced but little beyond the stage of a strong conviction that radioactivity logging curves will some day provide the information on such important quantities as the porosity and the liquid saturation of the formations. During the past few years the staffs of the Lane-Wells Company and Well Surveys, Incorporated, have devoted a great deal of time, thought, and experimentation to the relationships existing between radioactivity curves and the lithologic conditions encountered, and this paper is, in a manner of' speaking, intended as a progress report of this work and includes suggestions which the authors have found useful in the interpretation of radioactivity logs. The section on theory is not intended as a complete exposition of the physical processes involved, but rather as a brief introduction to the reader of these processes so that he may acquire a better understanding of the behavior of the radioactivity curves under the varied conditions encountered in normal well logging. Three relative methods for using neutron logs for the quantitative estimation of porosity in limestone or dolomite are presented. These methods are based on the comparison of logs and porosity data from wells in Louisiana, South Texas, West Texas, and New Mexico. These areas were selected because not only were there more core data available from these areas but also the majority of these data were from limestone or dolomitic zones. The correlation between core data and logs is simpler for limestones and dolomites than it is for sandstones due to the fact that sandstones are more complex than limestones and differ more widely among themselves as to composition of cementing materials, siltiness, etc. When data applicable to the various types of sandstones are available, the authors hope to present a discussion similar to this paper covering sandstones or possibly a more general discussion covering all types of reservoir rocks. The relative methods for estimating porosity which are presented in this paper fall short of the absolute method sought. However, these methods possess the advantage that they can be applied to almost any neutron log as long as the range of application is held within the limits imposed by the local lithologic conditions which prevailed during calibration, i.e., these methods are for short range application only. THE THEORETICAL BASIS FOR RADIOACTIVITY LOGGING The two redioactivity logging curves commercially available today are the

According to conventional crystal mechanics, a face-centered cubic single crystal slips on the system {111} <110> which receives the highest shear stress in terms of the stated orientation of the stress axis of the crystal.l However, in brass, the slip process is never as simple as this conventional analysis indicates. There is always a second cooperating plane which contains the same slip direction as the primary plane.2&apos;3 There is still another cooperating slip system commonly called the conjugate system3 previously observed to function with considerable lag only after the rotation due to the action of the first plane had produced a symmetrical condition of equal shear stress on the two systems. In the 1943 Campbell Lecture,4 a slip mechanism was outlined in which the {111) planes moved step-wise in two adjacent <112> directions integrating into the <110> slip direction. "... the slipping process would be visualized as a succession of steps 30" to the right and left of the resultant, microscopically observed, slip direction; a first step setting up the twinned configuration in the single spacing involved and an ensuing slip returning the atoms to the untwinned configuration while completing a fully integrated <110> movement."4 This process is shown diagrammatically in Fig 1 which shows two close packed layers of atoms at a slip site. A movement of the full circles through the "valleys" into the adjacent sites would produce a twin configuration with respect to the open circles. The term, "twin fault," seems most appropriate to define this faulted condition of the lattice. Annealing twins in face-centered cubic metals may arise from preformed nucleii which could be described as twin faults produced by the first movement of this two stage slip process. However, it is clear that this kind of slip does not take place so as to embrace a measurable number of adjacent planes because careful X ray examination has not conclusively shown the existence of ponderable twin lamellae (as in the case of Neumann bands in the body-centered ferrite). In view of the imponderable character of these hypothetical twin faults, the search for evidence of their existence seems restricted to indirect methods. The most obvious experimental technique serving this purpose is the determination by micrographic and X ray methods of the alignment of the composition planes of annealing twins with the former slip planes in axially strained and recrystallized single crystals. In previous attempts of this sort not all of the annealing twins could be traced to slip planes known to be operative in the conventional sense and hence evidence appeared negative or inconclusive. With the discovery of additional slip systems2&apos;3 operating in conjunction with&apos; the major system of highest resolved shear stress in axially strained brass it became apparent that the simple technique outlined above might be re-employed with more gratifying results. If, on annealing single crystals of alpha brass previously strained in tension, twins are found with their composition planes parallel to all three operative slip planes and with no participation of the fourth plane there is good evidence in favor of the existence of twin faults and of the two stage slip process. Experimental Procedure and Resuits Single crystals of alpha brass of the 70-30 composition were grown by solidification from the molten state.
