The agriculture industry has made great strides during the past decade to increase agriculture yields through increased use of fertilizers. Increased use of fertilizers may prevent, or at least delay, mass starvation due to the alarming increase in world population. Phosphate was added to soil as a plant nutrient in the form of calcined bones at least 2000 years ago (Anon., 1964), and man has used phosphate minerals as a source of fertilization in one form or another for at least 100 years. During 1977 the world produced about 116 Mt of phosphate rock, with about 86% used for fertilizers and another 4% for animal feed supplements. More than three-fourths of the total production comes from the United States, Morocco, and the Soviet Union. From a mineral beneficiation point of view, the major sources of phosphate rock and the methods of beneficiation can be classified as follows: marine deposits not containing appreciable carbonate minerals, marine deposits requiring a francolite carbonate mineral separation, igneous deposits not containing appreciable carbonate minerals, and igneous deposits requiring apatite carbonate mineral separation. [ ] Guano, mostly from Chile and Peru, accounts for 0.1% of the total world production, and the calcium phosphates from Ocean, Nauru, and Christmas Islands and the aluminum and iron phosphates from Brazil and Aruba account for less than 4% of the world production and are thus not considered in this classification (Lawver, et al.). At present, marine phosphorite deposits account for about 75% of the world's production; the igneous deposits account for 20%. The igneous deposits low in carbonate minerals are easily concentrated by crushing, grinding, and apatite flotation. The most important igneous deposits are those of the Kola Peninsula, USSR (Woodrooffe, 1972). The igneous deposits high in carbonate materials are of corn appreciably more difficult to beneficiate, but they have been concentrated by froth flotation for a number of years. An interesting but rather complicated flowsheet of this type is at Phalabonva, in the Republic of South Africa (Lovell, 1976). The Phalaborwa deposit is an igneous complex of pyroxenite with a central core of carbonatite surrounded by a serpentine- magnetite-apatite rock called phoscorite. The phoscorite containing about 10% P2O5, 35% magnetite, and 35% calcium magnesium carbonate is currently being processed. The process involves comminuting the material for fiberation and subjecting it to a copper float using a potassium amyl xanthate as collector and triethoxybutane as a frother followed by a magnetic separation of the tailings to produce a feed for phosphate flotation. This process produces a phosphate concentrate containing greater than 36% P2O5 at a P2O5 recovery ranging from 75 to 80%. Considerable success has been claimed for recovering apatite from carbonate-bearing ores at the Jacupiranga Mine of Serrana S/A (Silva and Andery, 1972). The carbonatite currently being mined contains an average of only 5% P205 and is concentrated using a unique flotation process (Andery, 1968) to yield 96% P205 concentrates. The ore contains about 12% apatite, 5% magnetite, 80% calcite plus dolomite, and minor amounts of phlogopite, olivine, zircon, ilmenite, and pyrochlore. Feed preparation consists of crushing to -31.75 mm (-1 M in.), rod milling in closed circuit with hydrocyclones to about 92% (-50 mesh), and two-stage cyclone desliming of the -50 mesh sands at 20 m. Weight recovery in the deslimed feed is normally 85 to 88% and the corresponding P2O5 recovery is usually about 90%. The deslimed feed is conditioned at 60 to 70% solids for 15 min at pH = 8-10 with 0.6 kg/t of causticized starch for iron oxide and calcite-dolomite depression. The conditioned slurry is diluted to 20 to 30% solids, about 0.2 kg/t of fatty acid or soap collector is added to the conditioner discharge, and the reagentized ore is subjected to rougher-scavenger flotation with additional fatty acid added to the scavenger float. The scavenger concentrate is returned to rougher circuit distributor, and the rougher concentrate froth is subjected to two stages of cleaner flotation to yield a final apatite concentrate analyzing 36 to 38% P205. Flotation recovery of P205 is, in general, above 90% when treating fresh carbonatite. The high-carbonate flotation tails normally analyze 1 % P2O5 or less and are suitable for portland cement production. The marine deposits. Types 1 and 2 of central Florida are representative of enormous reserves of phosphate rock that will undoubtedly account for much of the world's production in the near future. Until very recently the sedimentary deposits high in carbonate minerals (Type 2) have not been considered reserves due to the difficulty in making a francolite-carbonate separation. Although no commercial plant has yet been built to beneficiate Type 2 ore, laboratory and pilot plant data indicate the process is viable. If so, the reserves of Florida and similar deposits throughout the world will be substantially increased. A discussion of the beneficiation of these two types of sedimentary deposits and the relation of the resulting concentrates to the fertilizer industry of the United States is the subject of this paper.

Autogenous grinding, broadly defined as the self-comminution of ore in a cylindrical tumbling mill without using auxiliary grinding media, was first applied in the early 1930s in the so-called Hadsel mills (Hardinge, 1955) as seen in [Fig. 1], mainly used in gold mines on the US West Coast. A number of these mills were built in sizes of 6.1 to 7.3 m (20 to 24 ft) in diameter and 1.5 to 1.8 m (5 to 6 ft) in length but were later abandoned because of operating and maintenance problems. Further development of autogenous grinding led to the Hardinge wet grinding mill, the Aerofall dry grinding mill, and others. A tabulation of all known autogenous and semiautogenous installations around the world was sent recently to the authors by G. J. Kushner of Koppers Metal Processing Division. In the size range of 7.3 to 9.8 m (24 to 32 ft) in diameter, it lists a total of thirty mills used in the processing of copper ores. An additional 120 units are listed in the same size range for the processing of iron ores and other minerals. The largest mills in existence are 11.1-m-diam X 4.6-m-long (36-ft-diam X 15-ft-long) mills in Minnesota, powered by 8950 kW (12,000 hp) motors and used in taconite beneficiation. It is indicative of the phenomenal growth of this technology that none of the above 150 mills was in operation prior to 1964. Grinding rates in autogenous mills are very sensitive to variations in ore breakage characteristics and even with fairly constant ore type can exhibit large fluctuations in throughput. Autogenous grinding also depends on availability of a fraction of the ore to be ground in the form of "competent" rock which can withstand to a certain degree the tumbling and impact action within the mill. If the ore is uniformly "soft", it will soon be crushed into small size particles and further grinding, which depends on the existence of large size rocks in the mill, becomes impossible. This apparently is the case with most copper ores, as discussed by Bachman, Last and Nabbs (1970) who described pilot testing of a large number of ore samples from Kennecott 's Chino Mines. Under circumstances where autogenous grinding is impractical, it is possible to realize most of its benefits by utilizing large grinding balls in place of the "competent" rock and practice what has become known in the mining industry as semiautogenous grinding. In semiautogenous grinding (SAG), a grate discharge tumbling mill is fed the product of a primary crusher or run-of-mine rock. Forged steel or alloy grinding balls, in proportions ranging from 3.10% of the total volume in the mill, are used to complement the self-grinding ability of the ore. Semiautogenous circuits can be either designed for single-stage closed-circuit grinding which produces a final product for recovery processes, or for two-stage operation in which the SAG mill product is fed to a second stage of grinding in a conventional ball mill.

LIX63 In combination with DNNS selectively extracts nickel and/or cobalt from acidic leach liquors with pH values as low as 10 Nickel/cobalt and cobalt/nickel selectivities are achieved by varying the relative concentrations of LIX 63 and DNNS Increasing LIX63 concentration retards both extraction and stripping rates while DNNS has the opposite effect. Slope analyses of equilibrium data Indicate that both LIX63 and DNNS are present in the extracted complexes. Examples of possible flowsheets are presented.

Frontino operates three underground lode mines at Segovia in the area of northwest Antioquia, Colombia, which has been an important gold producing district since the late 1800s. Auriferous pyrite, the pre-dominent sulfide, carries very finely disseminated gold. Other minor sulfides are galena, pyrrhotite, and sphalerite in quartz gangue with the host rock being granodiorite. Silver is associated with the galena and also occurs as a sulfo-salt. In 1.973 and 1974, at an annual milling rate of 145,000 mt (160,000 st), average mill heads were 7.80 g per mt (0.23 oz per st) Au; 20.0 g per mt (0.58 oz per st) Ag; and 0.37% Pb; with a production of 1,150 kg (35,700 oz) Au and 4,500 kg (141,000 oz) Ag. Over 300 mt (330 st) of Pb concentrate were shipped. The ore is crushed to minus 16 mm (5 18 in. ) and fed to a rod mill with the discharge passing over a 1.07 m by 1.07 m (42 in. by 42 in. ) jig operating in closed circuit with the underflow from a cyclone in closed circuit with two ball mills. Cyclone overflow is bulk-floated for sulfide recovery from which the tailings are sent to the river as waste with the flotation concentrate joining the jig concentrate for cyanidation. The combined gold bearing concentrates, after cyclone classification, are reground to a very fine mesh in closed circuit with cyclone classification, with the overflow going to the primary thickener. Regrinding, classification, and thickening is done in cyanide solution, and the primary thickener produces a pregnant solution for Merrill -Crowe precipitation. The thickener underflow is the feed to the agitators, thickener, and filter from which the overflow and filtrate are sent to precipitation. The washed filter cake is repulped and floated for the recovery of a galena concentrate for shipment. About 40% of the recovered silver is in this concentrate. In the refinery the precipitate is melted into a dore bullion. This 600 mt (660 st) capacity mill employs several interesting techniques. Gold recovery of 85% to 90% from a complex sulfide denotes good practice. While total power at 42 kwh per mt (46 kwh per st) is high, it would be recognized that the grinding units are small in size and the flowsheet is complicated due to the gold occurring in the sulfide minerals. One of the most interesting of all the subjects required of persons studying the different facets of coal mining is coal mine gases. Some mine gases have been a real problem since the very beginning of underground mining, and in the early days there was insufficient knowledge to cope with them. The history of mining shows that until about the last 50 years, much work was done primarily by the hand methods which are primitive by today's standards. Miners had to contend with gases without the aid of enclosed lighting, permissible mine machinery, sophisticated testing devices, and high-pressure ventilating fans. In early days the miners were not educated about the different mine gases nor did they have the technical equipment to determine the actual composition of the deadly atmospheres they encountered. They simply applied a descriptive term to each gas or mixture of gases depending on its, effect on a person or the surrounding atmosphere. The gases or mixtures of gases were then referred to as "damps," a term which was probably derived from the German word "damps," meaning vapors or gases. The more common damps encountered were : Blackdamp A condition of the atmosphere in which a miner's light would be extinguished and in which breathing would be difficult, sometimes even resulting in suffocation. An atmosphere deficient in oxygen which could contain a combination of any of the mine gases. Firedamp A flammable mixture of methane and air which would either burn or explode when ignited. White Damp A mixture of gases containing carbon monoxide, most often found in mines during fires or after explosions.

Models for interphase mass transfer rates in the solvent extraction of metals are developed for zinc and copper chlorides being extracted by trilsooctylamine and for copper extraction by LIX 64N from ammonia solution. The approach is to adopt a stagnant film model on which film thicknesses are known and to derive the interfacial metal fluxes for the case where all reversible reactions are fast and locally equilibrated. A growing drop mass transfer cell is used to measure extraction rates. It is found that for the cases studied the transfer rates are mass-transfer limited On the other hand, copper extraction by LIX from acidic solution exhibits slow reaction kinetics, and earlier kinetics models are confirmed. Interactions that cause varying selectivity in the simultaneous extraction of copper and zinc chlorides are demonstrated.

A population balance model accounting for the transient variations in drop size distributions in a stirred liquid-liquid system is analyzed for its effect on chemical reaction conversion in a stirred, batch reactor. The analysis is applied specifically for phase transfer catalytic reactions, which indicates that transient effects of evolution of drop size distributions may be important in such systems.

The Mather Mine property is composed of a 5.2 sq km (2 sq mile) area within the Cities of Ishpeming and Negaunee which are located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Production in this mine started in 1943; it ran continuously until its closing in 1979, having produced slightly over 55 million tons of iron ore. This mine was a joint venture between several steel companies and The Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Company (CCI), with CCI being the fee holder and operator. For the first 17 years of operation, the ore was shipped in its natural state directly from the mine to the steel mill. By 1960, iron ore pellets were on the market and they proved so superior to the natural soft Mather ore that the latter became difficult to sell except for the coarser portions. It was decided to develop a pelletizing process for the Mather ore, and this was accomplished by 1965 when the first Mather pellets were produced. From this date, all but the coarse fraction of the Mather ore was shipped as pellets. The geological setting is that of a large east-west trending synclinorium which plunges to the west. The lowest member of this trough-like structure is, for the most part, a quartzite-like graywacke, the upper 20 m of which grades into a softer, fine grained slate. Lying conformably on this graywacke footwall member is an iron- formation member which is over 1,300 m in thickness. This iron-formation is cow posed of thin alternate bands of iron oxides and chert and is intruded by a number of diorite sills - some up to 122 rn (400 ft) in thickness. The north limb of this synclinorium dips at approximately 45' and bottoms out at about 1,000 m from surface in the central part of the mine. There are two sets of faults, many of which are intruded by diorite dikes, which trend east-west and southeast-northwest. Displacements are varied, reaching a maximum displacement of 243 m (800 ft). The ore is found lying directly on the slatey footwall and its position is largely controlled by the faults and dikes, with the bulk of the ore being on the upper side of these structures. The ore is composed of soft earthy hematite and martite with vertical thicknesses up to 122 m (400 ft) although the average thickness would be closer to 46 m (150 ft). The ore averaged 60% iron and 7% silica on a dried analysis. The Mather Mine is located on the north limb of the syncline and was worked from two shafts, the deepest of which. was 1,09 7 m. These two shafts are about 2 km apart and serviced a total of 8 working levels between them during the life of the mine. The level spacing was about 61 m (200 ft). The main haulageways were driven parallel to the ore/footwall contact in the hard cow petent graywacke wherever possible. On the lower levels, deeper into the footwall, naked development was common. This material graded into roof bolting ground towards the upper stratigraphic portion. As drifting progressed further into the upper stratigraphic portion of the footwall, progressively stronger steel sets had to be used. From the main haulageway, cross-cuts were turned into the orebody on 61 m (200 ft) centers and extended as far as needed to recover the ore available to that particular cross-cut. The main haulageways and cross-cuts were driven 3 m (10 ft) high, 3 m (10 ft) wide at the top and 4.6 m (15 ft) wide at the bottom. This configuration would accomodate a set composed of a 2.7 m (9 ft) cap on top of two 2.7 m (9 ft) legs angled out at 18'. A sill plate was used under each leg to prevent its sinking into the ore below. The type of steel used was dependent on the expected weight to be experienced. Sets were placed on 1.63 m (5 ft 4 in.) centers; however, in extremely heavy areas, it was sometimes necessary to install sets on 0.8 m (2 ft 8 in.) centers. On the top two levels (5th and 6th), the ore was considerably hard-er and was mined by sub-level stoping and long hole drilling. Very light steel sets were used in the main haulageways and cross-cuts and timber was used in the production drifts. Some con- crete production drifts were installed on 6th level, but proved to be uneconomical. However, as mining reached greater depths, the ore became softer and more massive, reaching its maximum vertical heights on 11th and 12th levels. On levels 7 through 10, yielding steel sets were used extensively in the slusher drifts. While they were satisfactory on 7th and 8th levels, their success diminished with depth and they were

VRD started producing pellets in 1969 with one 2-million-t straight grate plant. In the beginning of April 1973, the second unit came on stream with an additional capacity of 3 million t/a of pellets. In January 1977, the third unit started, bringing the annual capacity to 8 million t/a. In the coming year (1978-79), three more units, 3 million t each, are expected to begin production. CVRD's experience with different binders and additives is described. Over the years several kinds of pellets have been produced to satisfy market requirements. General quality information is given for each.

INTRODUCTION Situated 23 miles east of Pretoria the Premier Mine started diamond production in 1903. Two years later it produced the largest diamond yet discovered, the 3 106 carat Cullinan stone. For the period to 1932 when the mine was closed down due to economic circumstances, open cast mining was practised using inclined rope haulage traction and by this time had produced 48.5 million carats of predominantly industrial quality diamonds from 148 million tons of ore. In 1945 it was decided to re-open the mine using underground mining methods. A system using long hole benching was devised (Hodgson and Sewel 1960). This system was later modified but still forms the basis for approximately fifty percent of production. Following the successful introduction of block caving on associated diamond mines in the Kimberley area (Gallagher and Loftus 1960) this mining method was introduced to the Premier Mine in the late 60's and now accounts for nearly 50% of production. This paper will discuss block caving at Premier Mine in the light of our experience and discussion will be directed to the main geological and structural features of the orebody and host rocks and the related constraints imposed on the mining methods. Reference is made to the long hole benching mining method for comparative purposes. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONS The ore from the block caving and bench mining areas gravitates via ore passes to a twin haulage, 500m below surface. Electric 13 tonne locomotives, each hauling a train of 10 Granby type cars, deliver the ore to two 42" x 48" (1.06m x 1.22m) jaw crushers. The ore is reduced in size to minus 0.15m before being hoisted to the treatment plant on surface. Hoisting is done with 12.5 tonne bottom discharge skips in a five compartment rectangular shaft using two 3 240 H.P. semi automatic Ward Leonard winders. A small single drum service winder operates in the other compartment. Men and materials travel in a separate shaft in a 5,4m x 2,8m cage operated by a Koepi winder. These two shafts are also the main intake airways to the mine. The two main extraction fans capable of 250 m3/s at 3,2 kPa are situated on surface and are connected to the underground workings by an incline and a network of air passes and return airways. GEOLOGY Although there are numerous occurrences of kimberlite bodies in the district, the Premier Mine kimberlite pipe is the only economic orebody. It is roughly oval in shape with surface dimensions of 900m on the long axis and 450monthe short axis. The surface area is 320 000 m2. The kimberlite has intruded a massive body of felsite and norite which is intersected by a number of faults. The contact between the kimberlite and host rock is clear cut and dips inward at an average angle of 80°. Cutting across the pipe and the country rock is a 75 metre thick gabbro sill, the top of which intersects the pipe below the 347m level and dips at 15' to the north west. The kimberlite has been metamorphosed a distance of some 20m both above and below the sill contacts. Age measurements on biotite from the gabbro date the sill as 1 115 million years, thereby providing a minimum age of the pipe. (Pre Cambrian). All other pipes in South Africa are of Cretaceous age (60 million years). A simplified geological plan and section of the Premier Mine orebody is shown in Figure 1. It is thought that the kimberlite intruded in at least three distinct phases. The kimberlites of these different phases can be distinguished most easily by their characteristic colour. BROWN KIMBERLITE. This is the oldest kimberlite and forms a crescent shape in plan on the south eastern side of the pipe. In depth it increases in relative area. Although the brown kimberlite carries the highest diamond grade in terms of carats per ton all the various kimberlites in the Premier pipe are economic to mine.

The Rio Tinto - Cerro Colorado operation was the first major cyanide plant built out of South Africa since the Carlin and Corte mills came on-stream in 1965 and 1969. Its flowsheet was presented in the original monograph, "Gold and Silver Cyanidation Plant Practice, " published in 1975, with a brief description of the plant but without the operating costs. The authors have recently received these data and it was believed worthwhile to present them in this volume along with the aforementioned flowsheet. The Cerro Colorado ore deposit is located at Minas de Rio Tinto in the province of Huelva, Spain, approximately 88 km (55 miles) north- west of Seville. The previously mined copper ore bodies lie on either side of the deposit which is mainly copper ore. The crest of the deposit is a capping of "gossan" containing hematite, limonite, gold, and silver. Separate facilities for primary crushing, concentration of copper ores and cyanidation of gold-silver ores are provided. Fine crushing is common to both ores. The run-of-mine open-pit ore is fed from a stockpile via a surge bin and apron feeder to a jaw crusher. After crushing to minus 150 mm (6 in. ), the ore is washed in a rotary scrubber to remove the clay material ahead of fine crushing. Minus 6 mm (1/4 in. ) screen undersize is pumped directly to the grinding circuit with the screen oversize being crushed to minus 19 mm (3/4 in. ) for feed to the primary ball mill; this is followed by two subsequent stages of ball mill grinding to 80% minus 43 microns (325 mesh). Grinding is with water only; no cyanide is used. After thickening, lime is added to the first two of seven Pachuca tanks for conditioning ahead of cyanide addition in each of the five remaining Pachuca tanks. This flowsheet indicates rapid cyanide consumption and the need to maintain a high strength cyanide solution for silver extraction. Agitation for dissolution of the gold and silver is followed by standard CCD practice employing four 67 m (220 ft) washing thickeners in series, with repulping between each thickener. A departure from American and Canadian practice is the use of Stellar filters developed in South Africa for pregnant solution clarification and recovery of zinc-gold-silver precipitates. The precipitate is treated with acid for zinc removal, the sludge filtered in presses, dried, calcined and smelted to produce dore bullion of 900 fineness containing 12% gold and 78% silver.

INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY The Kimberley Division of De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited includes four underground mines in Kimberley viz. Dutoitspan, Bultfontein, De Beers and Wesselton Mine and two outside mines, viz. Finsch, an opencast operation and Koffie- fontein, an underground operation. Figure 1 is a map of the Kimberley district showing the location of these mines. Finsch is 150km west of Kimberley and Koffiefontein is 80km south of Kimberley. The head office of the De Beers Company is in Kimberley. The diamond sorting and trading companies for diamonds produced in South Africa are also in Kimberley. Diamonds were first discovered in the Kimberley area at Hopetown in 1866 on the banks of the Orange River. This, and later finds, triggered the start of the great "Diamond Rush". In 1870 the Jagersfontein (now closed) and Dutoitspan pipes were discovered, followed by those at Bultfontein, De Beers and Kimberley Mine (now closed) in 1871, Koffiefontein in 1880 and Wesselton in 1891. Finsch Mine was a more recent discovery in 1961. Finsch, due to go underground in 1986, and Koffiefontein, are fully self-contained with their own treatment plants, housing, services etc. The four Kimberley mines deliver ore by conveyor to a central treatment plant and use joint ser- vices. ,+lining is presently carried out mainly by Block Caving which has replaced the earlier Chambering method. De Beers Mine, on a limited scale, and Wesselton Mine have recently started to use Sub-Level Caving, and both Bultfontein and Du- toitspan are scheduled to use the same method at a later date. The combined ore tonnage produced by the Kimberley Mines is 17 400 tons per day, Koffiefontein 12 000 tons per day and Finsch Mine 17 000 tons per day. THE EVOLUTION OF MINING METHODS Initially, the open-cast mining was carried out to as great a depth as safety would permit. In the early stages of open-cast mining, the Kimberlite was removed in horizontal slices from levels 13m to 20m apart. The rock broken in the workings was raised to the surface by means of endless rope haulage inclines. As lower levels were attained these rope haulages were replaced by aerial hoists, inclined shaft haulages or inclined skip-ways. These methods were dependent upon the strength of the unsupported pipe walls, which became increasingly unstable with depth and a system was adopted whereby the ground mined in open excavations was tipped down passes to tunnels connecting with vertical hoisting shafts sunk in the country rock. As work in the open pit became more and more impracticable due to extensive falls of ground, this system was replaced by a combination of open-cast and underground mining, and eventually by wholly underground methods. Chambering With the advent of underground mining, a system known as "Chambering" (or "Inclined Chambering") was evolved. It was essentially a combination of shrinkage stoping and caving, whereby advantage was taken of the high pressure exerted by the loose rock that had accumulated in the open excavations due to the collapse of the pipe walls. This mining method was introduced around 1890 and was successfully employed, with little change, up to the early nineteen seventies. In this system each mine was served by a main hoisting shaft situated about 300m in the country rock. Main haulage cross cuts were driven from the shaft to the pipe at 200m (600ft) vertical intervals. A sub-vertical shaft, situated close to the pipe provided access to the working levels. Chamber levels were established from the sub-vertical shaft at 13m (40ft) intervals. See figure 2. On each of these levels successive 6,8m wide “cuts" were mined out across the pipe, from one rock contact to the other, and extended vertically to the footwall of the level above. Surveying and mapping are used to locate and visually portray objects, lines, or areas in relation to a reference point or line. The actual making of the measurements to locate the objects and points falls under surveying while mapping is concerned with putting the survey information into a graphical form. Generally, the type or class of proposed survey depends on the precision required. Some surveys may need only approximate measurements which can be obtained by simply pacing or by using an ordinary measuring tape; others may require much accuracy, thus calling for the use of an engineer's transit or theodolite along with a graduated steel tape for horizontal measurements, or a level and a graduated rod for measuring vertical distances. Mapping is likewise dependent on accuracy requirements. For example, a general layout showing the relative position of surface facilities may not call for a large scale of dimension or great precision whereas for detailed work, a large scale plus care in plotting points and drawing lines and curves are important factors. SURVEYING METHODS There are many kinds or types of surveying methods. Some examples include : land surveying for determining boundaries of land areas ; route surveying for locating roads, highways, right-of-ways, and haulways; city surveying for laying out lots, streets, and alleys; and mining surveying for projecting mine openings and locating mining operations. See Fig. 1. There are other types of surveying than those named, but in general, the type of method to be used will depend on the purpose for which the survey is to be made.

Longwall mining which has a long history abroad, was used only on a limited scale in the United States until less than 20 years ago. Modern longwall mining in this country can be said to have begun in 1960 with the first installation of self-advancing props in a coal mine in southern West Virginia. In Europe, because of adverse natural conditions, longwall mining is frequently the only practical method, but, in the United States, the system has had to compete economically with highly productive room-and-pillar systems. However, because it is inherently continuous, it has greater productive potential than room-and-pillar systems, and, therefore, although only about 5% of the total U.S. underground production today is the result of the longwall system, its growth potential is great. As mining, by necessity, progresses deeper and must be done under poorer natural conditions, less opportunity will exist for the room- and-pillar system, and the longwall system will have to be used.

Pyrometasomalic mineralization occurs within meta-morphosed Paleozoic carbonates intruded by Laramide granodiorites. Two types of alteration developed shams in the district. The dominant type is post-magmatic which developed an early hydrous endoskarn phase, and intermediate anhydrous exoskarn phase, and a late hydrous phase affecting both sham types. A rare, second type is magmatic in age, lacks the hydrous phases, and developed a mineralogically-zoned endoskarn. Garnet exoskarns lacking associated plutonic rocks are stratigraphically controlled and contain an early anhydrous phase, an intermediate hydroxyl-bearing phase, and a late hydrous phase associated with base metal deposition.

Coal mining historically has been a hazardous occupation but, in recent years, tremendous progress has been made in reducing accidental coal mine deaths and injuries. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the basic principles of accident prevention as they are related to coal mining. Accident prevention fundamentals are no different for coal mining than for any other type of work. The fundamentals apply to all industries. Construction workers may be struck by falling tools and materials, and miners may be struck by falling slate and coal. Sailors may be trapped by shipboard fires, and miners may be trapped by mine fires. Railroad brakemen may lose hands and fingers positioning couplers, and miners may lose hands and fingers positioning couplers. Many other examples could be cited, but the point is that accidents that happen in coal mines are basically similar to accidents that happen in other industries. Thus, the basic principles for preventing accidents apply in coal mining as they do in any other type of work. COAL MINE ACCIDENT EXPERIENCE The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) is the main source for accident experience data in coal mines. Coal mine operators are required, by law, to forward to MSHA monthly the number of fatal and disabling injuries, man-hours worked, and tons of coal mined. This information is compiled and published quarterly, with annual summaries, by MSHA. Trends in the number of fatalities and fatal injury rates are shown in Fig. 1. Major coal mine disasters, with number of miners killed, and dates of coal mine safety legislation are shown in Table 1. The fatal and disabling injury frequency rates for the coal industry are shown in Fig. 2.

Numerous articles have been written about the coal miner ; he has been compared with brave men who have gone out to conquer some unknown hazard throughout the ages. Now, however, modern mining is no longer something to be avoided, but a vocation that anyone can be proud of, with remuneration equal to or above that of almost any industry. A concerted effort is being made each day by both the operators of most mines as well as the state and federal inspectors to see that coal mines are as safe or safer than work places in any other industry. How- ever, it is true that mine fires and explosions have occurred in the mining industry since its inception. One of the earliest accurate references to such an occurrence is found in the transactions of the Royal Society of London. In the Colliery Managers' Handbook, 1898, Caleb Pamely writes of an explosion that occurred ,at Fatfield, England in August 1708, resulting in the deaths of 69 persons. He states: "Three of them, viz, two men and a woman, were blown quite up from the bottom of the shaft, fifty-seven fathoms deep, into the air, to a considerable distance from the mouth of the pit." It is interesting to note that women were employed ,as miners in England during that period. In the United States, the first record of coal mined was in 1702 by the Jamestown colonists. In 1786, about 20 years after Pittsburgh, PA was first settled, a charter was granted by William Penn to mine coal on the banks of the Monongahela River. Then in 1803, the first important coal company, the Lehigh Coal Co., was established. From this beginning, the mining industry continued to grow in importance and the first state mining law was formulated in 1870. The Pennsylvania state mining law was followed in 1873 by Ohio's, and in 1876 by Maryland's. A mine explosion at Avondale, PA in 1869 stimulated state legislatures to formulate these early laws. In 1907 near the town of Fairmont, WV, there were, within three days, two explosions resulting in a total of 597

Pulverized coal has been introduced at the anode where it is oxidized during the electrowinning of metals from their aqueous solutions This substitutes an electrochemical reaction between coal and water for the usual oxygen-evolving half-cell reaction at the anode, with the result that overall cell potential is significantly lowered and the consumption of electrical energy is correspondingly reduced. Experimental results are reported for electrowinning copper as an example of this novel modification of the electrowinning process in this example, the use of coal lowered the consumption of electricity by two-thirds of the requirement of the conventional process When the potential electrical energy of the coal consumed is considered the new, coal-assisted process consumes about 45% less energy, and the energy costs (combined costs of coal and electricity) are reduced by about 50%.

INTRODUCTION The administrative processes of coal mines are becoming increasingly complex. As society evolves into a more complicated structure with greater emphasis on individuality, government regulations reach deeply into every activity in an effort to force individuals into a standardized mold. These contradictory pressures add an extra burden to the administration of a mining operation. Recent years have brought a substantial change in the skills needed by mine supervisors and managers. As a result, a better understanding of the administrative functions is necessary. The mine superintendent has the overall responsibility for the mine; for effective operation he must be sufficiently knowledgeable to oversee all the complex functions that make up the mine. This chapter does not cover all the administrative requirements because of the variation in mine operation and in company policies and organizational structure. It does attempt to identify the administrative functions that would be required at a large mine with a preparation plant. It is assumed that the mine operation is decentralized with very little duplication of functions at the organizational levels above the mine. Thus each function is assumed to be relatively complete at the mine and under the general supervision of the mine superintendent. EMPLOYMENT PROCEDURES Throughout the mining industry, in deep or surface mining, in union or nonunion companies, the success or failure of an organization is directly related to the caliber of employees who make up the organization. A hydrometallurgical process has been developed for the recovery of high-purity silver from sulfated residues. The process eliminates the high temperature operations ordinarily associated with silver recovery and refining. The crux of the process is a metathetical leach which maintains the sulfate ion concentration at a level which both allows silver nitrate to be freely soluble and simultaneously depresses the solubility of lead nitrate. The subsequent hydrolytic purification of the silver nitrate solution, the recovery of high-purity silver by electrowinning in a diaphragm cell, and the final product purity are discussed.
