The Agua Fria mine is in eastern Honduras at Lat. 140" 06' N., Long. 86" 36' W. Danli, the seat of the local municipal government, is the nearest town. The property is approximately 44 miles east of Tegucigalpa, the terminus of a truck road from the Pacific coast. The mine lies at an altitude of 3300 ft. with surrounding elevations as high as 6000 feet. For 20 years the oxidized croppings of the Agua Fria vein had been worked intermittently when in 1927 an attempt was made to open the property. A shaft was sunk 300 ft. and considerable ore was blocked out, but before a mill could be installed financial difficulties arose and the mine reverted to the original owners. Erle Y. Halliburton, of Los Angeles, purchased the property in 1934. At that time a careful consideration of all factors involved showed that air transport was the only practical method of moving the equipment and machinery necessary to commence production. The other alternative was by muleback, which required sectionalizing all equipment to a maximum load of 200 lb., and during the rainy season this type of freighting was subject to serious delays. It was decided to purchase a trimotor Ford powered by three Pratt and Whitney Wasp B motors developing 400 hp. each. There were several reasons for the choice: (1) this type of plane was available at a reasonable price, owing to its replacement by faster models on most of the airlines in the United States; (2) the ship was capable of carrying a pay load of 3000 Ib. over the required distance; (3) since this airplane had been widely used there would be no difficulty in securing competent personnel or in purchasing spare parts. It was necessary to rebuild the plane for cargo servicc. The windows were removed and the fuselage was entirely covered. A hatch was cut in the top of the fuselage to receive heavy crane loads and pieces of freight that were too large or too long to go through the rear door. The seats were removed and the interior of the plane was lined with Duralumin sheets. A heavy-duty landing gear was installed and the floor was reinforced. The nearest site for an airport was two miles north of the mine. The necessary grading was done by a small track-type tractor with a wheeled grader, which was brought in overland. Prediction of ventilation needs in long range mining projections requires serious consideration when formulating those projections. Predicting the behavior of the ventilation system of an old, complex mine poses an especially provocative problem. Air-flow around and through mined-out areas via bleeder systems, leakage flows through stoppings or other air control devices, and the use of multiple fans all add to the basic complexity of a ventilation system and make predictions of ventilation changes very difficult. Fortunately, the task of making ventilation decisions can be greatly assisted by ventilation surveying and computer simulation. The Nemacolin Mine of Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation, located in Southwestern Pennsylvania, is one such old mine which used the computerized approach successfully. A mine-wide pressure-quantity survey was used to obtain realistic values for airway resistance factors. These values, together with network topology, formed the basic input for computer simulation. Results from this simulation indicated that air quantities generated at critical airways by the model were generally within a couple of percent of those measured in the actual survey. It was then concluded that the model was acceptable for practical application, and it was used immediately for studying the effects on the ventilation system of changing the blade settings of fans. Additionally, the model was modified to incorporate projected mine development and used to predict future ventilation.

GENERAL Broken Hill lies at latitude 31º58'S longitude 141º27'E on the semi-arid western plains of New South Wales. From discovery in 1883 until the end of 1969 the lead-silver-zinc orebody has yielded 107,570,000 tons of ore for an overall grade of 13.1% Pb, 6.9 oz Ag/ton and 9.4% Zn.* The orebody currently supports the activities of four mines which are, from north to south, North Broken Hill Limited, Broken Hill South Limited, The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited. It is estimated that in 1969 these mines produced about 8 ½ % of world lead production and about 6% of world zinc production. In 1905 The Zinc Corporation, Limited was founded to recover zinc from tailings dumps and moved into mining in 1911 on leases purchased from Broken Hill South Limited at the then southern extremity of the "line of lode". New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited was formed in 1936 to explore and mine for deep ore in the leases to the south of The Zinc Corporation which were purchased from Barrier South Limited. The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines are both managed by Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Limited, which wholly owns The Zinc Corporation, Limited and has a 32% interest in New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited. * Throughout this paper tons referred to are long tons of 2,240 lbs.

Extrapolation is a useful technique, but it can be overdone. Seldom is it justified to study over a range of 1 to 6 and extrapolate the results to 150,000. It is especially dangerous if the extrapolation is based on a false assumption. The authors assume settlers scale-up by residence time rather than by area, admit their result (a settler depth of 7 m) is "unreasonable" and suggest longer, wider, shallower settlers might be better. Various authors have noted for a copper-LIX system a total flow basis of 2 gpm per sq ft for sizing settlers. The results of this are compared with those in the paper in [Table 7]. The authors note that flooding of their settlers was never approached. Thus the smallest unit calculated is understandably twice too big. The largest however, is 5% of the required size. I note that the figures in [Table 6] for 1/min/cm2 are based on plan area rather than cross section as titled and are wrong by l0 4. A flow of 2050 1/min/cm2 is about Mach I. It is also 10 5/3 or 46.5 times that of the little one, although the abstract says the design was based on constant flow rate per unit cross section.

RECORDING that the latest annual meeting was the largest and most successful ever held has be-come almost a habit, but when, as this year, the registration on the first day exceeded any other first day by two hundred, the annual dinner attracted nearly 1200, as compared with 750 at the previous largest one, and the number of technical sessions was larger than ever before, there seems no escape from so regarding it. In spite of the third day being a legal holiday (Washington's Birthday) no slackening, in attendance and interest was noted, and throughout the four days the greatest problem was to find enough meeting rooms and chairs to provide for the sessions, of which as many as twelve were in progress at one time. Solution of the problem would not have been possible (since the Engi-neering Societies building, was designed to provide only three general meeting rooms) except that a part of the eighth floor happened to be temporarily vacant. As these extra rooms will not be available next year, it may become necessary to adopt measures to keep the annual meeting down to the limit of facilities for handling it. The meeting opened on Monday with simultaneous sessions on iron and steel, geophysical prospecting, mine ventilation, non-metallic minerals, and milling, methods. The first four, which were continued after the usual recess for lunch, are reported in more detail elsewhere.

It is known 1,2 that the equilibrium between titanium metal, TiCl2 , and TiCl3, in a solvent of molten metal chlorides, is influenced both by the total amount of dissolved titanium and by the type of solvent. Assuming that the trivalent titanium forms the complex ion Ti111 Cl4, the equilibrium reaction may be expressed by the following equation, (Me) TiIII cl4+ 1/2 Ti = 3/2 TiII cl2+ (Me) Cl The ideal ionic equilibrium constant for this reaction is, Where the N's are the molar ionic fractions in the equilibrium melt, and (Me) the different types of cations present in the equilibrium mixture. The following thermodynamic relation is derived between Kand the concentration of cations in the equilibrium melt, mix The N"S are the equivalent ionic fractions, and so forth are constants corresponding to the standard changes in free energy for reactions in melts where only the cation indicated is present, and f (y1) is a function of the activity coefficients in the equilibrium mixture. When this term vanishes, a simplified linear relationship between In Kideal and the concentration is obtained. The simplified relationship has been applied with satisfactory results to the experimental data of Mellgren and pie,' and Kreye and Kellogg.2 MANY existing methods for the production of light metals involve the reduction of their respective metal halides in the presence of salt melts composed of alkali or alkaline earth chlorides. In such a solution phase, the light-metal halide may undergo stepwise reduction from a higher, to a lower valence, and finally to a zero valent state. In this connection, the disproportionation equilibrium is of great interest. In the case where the higher valence is three and the lower valence is two, the disproportionation equilibrium may be written as follows, 3 Me11 = 2 Me111 + Me [I] If this equilibrium occurs in a salt melt containing a large excess of alkali chlorides, a typical ionic melt is obtained. It is then possible to formulate the cation equilibrium: 2 Me+h' + Me = 3 Me++ [II] Reaction [11] is analogous to a cation exchange reaction. THESE notes should be considered as a further discussion of Mr. S. W. Miller's paper on "Some Structures in Steel Fusion Welds."1 In that paper and the resulting discussion; several conflicting opinions were expressed as to the identity of the needles or small crystals present in oxyacetylene and electric welds. An interesting specimen of an electric weld examined by the writer seems to afford new evidence regarding the needles, that may be worth presenting at this time. The specimen consisted of a piece of 3/8 -in. (9.5-mm.) steel plate, about 2 ¼ by 1 ¾ in. (5.7 by 4.5 cm.) in size, on which some iron had been deposited by arc-welding to a depth of about 3/16 in. (4.7 mm.). The weld appeared to be a very good one, with no noticeable break or boundary between the plate and the deposited iron. Sections for microscopic examination were cut in three planes at right angles to each other through the deposited metal, two of these sections also extending through the steel base. After polishing in the usual way, the microscope showed that the deposited metal was full of very small, round, gray, oxide spots, while the steel plate contained quite a number of alumina inclusions and a little slag. The sections were etched with nitric acid in ordinary alcohol, and structures similar to those described by Mr. Miller were then displayed. Fig. 1 shows the typical appearance of the deposited metal, which was quite uniform in all three of the planes examined. The round dark-gray spots are oxides, and the pale angular crystals are evidently what, Mr. Miller called cementite and Mr. Jeffries martensite, while Dr. Ruder and Prof. Boylston suggested that they might be nitride. The boundary between this structure and the steel base was sharply defined under the microscope. Fig. 2 shows the structure of the plate just under the weld; this is almost martensitic and resembles a coarse-grained casting. This coarse cast structure soon became finer as the distance from the weld increased, finally, becoming very fine, with numerous small particles of sorbite. This very fine structure, shown in Fig. 3, became coarser in turn and finally merged into the original normal structure of the steel plate, shown

The progress made in testing the strength of rocks and minerals as they are encountered in mine operation is reviewed. An attempt is made to correlate these physical measurements with abrasive hardness, grindability, and behavior in comminution on one hand and fracture of rocks in pillars and roof control on the other. THIS paper reviews the progress made in testing the strength of rocks, ores, coal, salts, and other minerals as they are encountered in mine operations. It attempts to correlate the results of these physical measurements with technological properties more useful to the mining engineer: abrasive hardness, grindability, and behavior in comminution on one hand, and roof control, fracture of rocks in pillars, and mining methods with controlled caving on the other. In the following pages, the materials discussed will be referred to as rocks. Basic to rock mechanics and comminution are the problems of strength, elastic behavior, and failure, common to all brittle materials. A distinction will be drawn as to theoretical and applied research, and discussion of the progress made in each field will include test data obtained by the U.S. Bureau of Standards,1-1 the U.S. Bureau of Mines," the Iowa Engineering Experiment Station,"." the Committee on Geophysical Research at Harvard University,'" Basic Industries Research of the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co.,11,12 by Philipps,13 and by Mueller," to name only a few. With refinements of testing methods and increased standardization. more useful and more comparable results have been achieved. This is especially important in testing a material like rock, as the inherent heterogeneity demands careful and exacting procedures. New measuring procedures that appear to supersede well known standard methods have contributed to faster and less costly testing yet have introduced new concepts, with implications as to comparability of results which must be watched. Reference is made to the sonic method for determining elastic properties," to be discussed in detail below. Basic Investigations Historically, all work in the field has started with the simplest determinations such as those for crushing strength, abrasive hardness, and grindability. These serve the limited objectives in the researcher's field of specialization: building construction, road ballast, roof control in mines, comminution, and seismic prospecting. Occasionally, fundamental properties like the modulus of elasticity E and Poisson's ratio v have been determined with the idea that they might have some bearing on the technological properties of the material under investigation. But it was not until the work of Philipps,13 of Harvard University,'" and of the U.S. Bureau of Mines"' that sufficient basic data were collected to allow researchers to go beyond the technological test and find the fundamental laws behind the behavior of rocks in mine and mill operations. The properties to be looked for are those that describe the elastic behavior of any material, the modulus of elasticity E and Poisson's ratio v being the ones determinable with least difficulties. Only two such properties are required to compute any other property such as the shear modulus, the modulus of rigidity, and the bulk modulus, all of which are related to each other according to well known equations of the theory of elasticity." In spite of their heterogeneous character, all rocks tested have possessed elastic properties. This does not mean that rocks of the same type always have the same modulus of elasticity, which varies exactly as the crushing strength or any other physical property of a rock can spread over a wide range. This has been explained by imperfections of the material always found in rocks, but to some extent this scattering of data is caused by inaccuracies inherent in the testing methods. Modulus of Resilience, a Criterion of Failure Increased availability of E values should allow us to test the validity of the quantity of strain energy theory which has been used in the solution of roof control problems by Philipps13 and by Holland.'" Recently Bond and Wang12 have applied this theory to explain the failure of an elastic material in comminution. Actually it is a very old theory, proposed as far back as 1885 by Beltrami.16 By its assumption the condition of yielding is determined by the term S2 M, = — x volume. Here M, is the modulus of 2E resilience, and its dimension is inch-pounds per cubic inch, that is, work per unit volume. Its numerical value is equal to the area under the stress-strain diagram. In the foregoing equation S is the yield stress (in psi) in tension or compression, whatever the case may be. E, the modulus of elasticity, is in psi. The great appeal of Beltrami's concept of stored energy lies in the fact that the two properties which seem to influence failure most, strength and elasticity, occur in the formula for the modulus of resilience. As an illustration of this, the moduli of resilience in compression of some typical materials tested by the U.S. Bureau of Mines" have been plotted in Fig. 1. The sample of concrete of conventional mix is shown only for the sake of comparison. Its determination was made in the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, University of Illinois. This paper describes the use of the magnetometer, under geological direction, in exploration of the Sudbury nickel district. The writer's experience at Falconbridge has led him to the belief that only through detailed work, and by careful correlation of both geological and geophysical results, can geophysical prospecting methods be applied successfully to mining exploration problems. It is hoped that the basic technique described in the paper will be found to have general application.

Research was conducted into cold briquetting dross arisings and metallurgical coke fines from an Imperial Smelting Furnace (I.S.F.) as an economic means of agglomerating fine materials for smelting in a blast furnace. A mechanism was postulated whereby strong bonds were developed within the briquettes; laboratory scale smelting trials and full scale plant trials are included in the paper with a description of a two tonne/hour briquetting pilot plant. Benefits from smelting briquettes in an I.S.F. were measured directly in metallurgical coke savings and, indirectly, by a significant improvement in sinter plant productivity.

THE present study was rude to determine the laws governing the formation of the primary? crystal structure during solidification. Most of the experiments were carried out on chill castings, but from the results it will be possible to draw certain conclusions as far as sand cast-ings are concerned. It is necessary to discuss first a number of theories, which are generally adopted for explaining the structure of an ingot. Usually, the structure FIG. 1.-VARIOUS ZONES IN A CHILL INGOT. off an ingot consists of the following three zones (Fig. 1): (1) a chill layer of small at. random oriented crystals; (2) a layer of columnar crystals; (3) a zone of equiaxed crystals. The tensile properties of the chill layer and the equiaxed range are usually much better than in the columnar range, particularly the planes that are formed by the columnar crystals growing from two sides at right angles leave low tensile properties. This is one of the reasons why colum-nar crystals in ingot structures are undesirable.

Chemical analysis shows the partition of the magnesium addition between the metal and the graphite is independent of whether the graphite is in the form of nodules or flakes. The bright central spot observed in nodular graphite polished sections is shown to be due to the structure of the nodules. DURING the past few years numerous papers have been published on the production1-7 and heat treatment" of nodular cast irons. However, very little information is available on the structure of the nodules and the reason for their formation. It would appear that an explanation of the phenomenon of nodulation must await a detailed knowledge of the nature of the nodule. Disagreement exists among various workers on such a fundamental point as to whether or not a nodule actually contains a microscopically visible, nongraphitic nucleus.9-11 Work was initiated with a view to obtaining definite information on this and other aspects of the problem. Chemical Separation and Analysis Microscopic appearance had indicated9-11 that a nongraphitic core might exist in nodules (Fig. 1). It appeared that a chemical comparison of separated nodules and flake graphite would be profitable, for if the core is nongraphitic a relatively large amount of certain elements would be found in the nodules as compared to the flake. This comparison could best be made by obtaining nodules and flake from the same melt of cast iron, part of which had been in-noculated with a suitable addition reagent for the formation of nodules. A 300 lb melt was produced. About half of this was innoculated in the ladle with an Fe-Si-Mg alloy to produce nodules and cast into keel blocks; the remaining half of the melt had silicon added in an effort to compensate for the silicon in the innoculant used in the other half of the melt and this was cast into similar keel blocks. The analyses of the resultant irons are given in Table I. Nodules and flake were chemically extracted from 2 kg samples of metal as described in the appendix. While this method dissolved the iron and chromium carbides, it did not dissolve the titanium, vanadium, and molybdenum carbides. These latter carbides could have been removed by nitric acid, but in other experiments it was found that it attacked pools of metallic iron entrapped in the nodules which had, until the nitric acid treatment, been protected from the attack of the sulphuric, hydrochloric, and hydrofluoric acids. It will be shown in the next section that entrapped iron exists in nodules but not in flake. On microscopic examination many tiny irregular particles were observed to accompany both the nodules and the flake. These were identified by tabling a sample of nodules from which a sufficient fraction was obtained for X-ray analysis. A good pattern of titanium carbide was obtained indicating that this was the predominant compound present. Since it was not possible to determine how completely the carbides could be removed mechanically and since their removal from flake is much more difficult, it was decided not to resort to any separation as this would render further comparisons more difficult. IT is well known that many properties of a given metal vary with the size of grain or cell. For most industrial purposes, where high ultimate strength and high elastic limit are desired, the manufacturer tries to produce a. fine-grained structure. For some purposes, for example in transformer iron, a coarse-grained structure is desirable. The terms fine-grained and coarse-grained are used only in a relative sense. For example, a fine-grained cast copper might have grains 100 times larger than coarse-grained high-speed steel. Similarly, a fine-grained steel rail might have grains or cells 100 times larger than coarse-grained wire, which was made of steel from the same heat. In some metals, the change in grain size is more appreciable than the changes in any of the properties determined by the tensile test. Furthermore, in metals which have been annealed or subjected to high temperatures, grain size may prove to be a better indication of the life of the metal in use than the tensile test. One of the authors was able to supplant the tensile test with grain-size determinations in the control of. metal for a specific use, the latter determination being more indicative of. the life of the metal part than the tensile test. A grain-size determination with a tensile test is, of course, more valuable than either singly. At present there is a decided dearth of data on actual grain-size determinations in metals, and consequently a corresponding lack of ability to interpret the determinations after they are made. It would be desirable to have correlation made between grain size and properties of metals, comparing thousands of determinations. In this way, grain-size determinations might be interpreted in much the same manner that tensile tests are now.

Eight binary iron alloys were examined after ion nitriding experiments to determine the behavior of the following elements: Al, Mo, Mn, Si, Ti, V,Cr, and C. Only Al, Cr, Ti, and V additions caused hardening in binary iron alloys. A few steels were examined to see the effect of Cr, Cr + Al, Cr + Ti, and Cr + V. It is suggested that a useful new class of ni-triding grade steels might be those containing about I pct V. The nitriding of steel, first described by Fry1 about 45 years ago, rapidly attained commercial application with very little knowledge of the fundamentals involved. While Fry,' in describing the status of nitriding in 1932, apparently correctly postulated hardening by precipitated nitrides, the details of the nitriding process were not understood, nor has the situation changed much since that time. It is also interesting to note that the compositions of some typical nitriding steels given by Fry at that time have changed little in the intervening years. Currently used nitriding steels owe their surface hardening to either chromium (as in 4340 steel) or aluminum plus chromium as in the Nitralloy grades, where both CrN and AlN appear to contribute to harden ing. Titanium additions have been studied experimentally, but thus far titanium steels have not won wide commercial acceptance. This subject will be expanded later. The orthodox ammonia nitriding process has been reviewed very adequately many times as in Jenkins3 and Case and VanHorn,4 and their is no need to outline the process here. Ion nitriding is not as well-known, although there have been several descriptions5-9 of the process given, sometimes with comparisons with the ammonia process. Most of these papers are primarily concerned with a description of the equipment, or of the physics or electrical engineering aspects of ion nitriding, but Noren and Kindbom9 gave the results of a metallurgical investigation using both processes. In brief, ion nitriding is carried out in a vacuum chamber from which the air is exhausted and replaced by a N2-H2 mixture, typically containing 10 to 20 pct N2, at about 5 to 10 torr pressure. While ammonia gas has also been used in ion nitriding, there is no evidence that ammonia makes any improvement in the ion nitriding process. A few hundred volts dc is applied between the grounded container wall (positive) and an insulated center post supporting the work (negative) to be nitrided. A glow discharge is created in the ionized gas, accelerating positive nitrogen ions to the work. These ions contain enough energy to form the normally unstable Fe4N "white layer", thus establish- ing surface nitrogen solubility characteristic of the a Fe/Fe4N equilibrium. This creates a substantial concentration gradient, driving dissolved nitrogen into the steel. The temperature employed is in the same range (around 500" to 550°C) as in ammonia nitriding, but because of factors which are not understood at present the nitriding time is ordinarily considerably reduced in ion nitriding. Other advantages have been cited,9 but it is not the purpose of the present work to contrast the two processes. The present objective was to examine the behavior of binary iron alloys during ion nitriding with respect to the microstructure, hardness level, and depth, and to examine some of these factors in steels as well. In this way it was hoped to be able to find out something about the individual role of these elements in steels. While all the work was done by ion nitriding, there seems to be no reason why any conclusions reached would not equally apply to ammonia nitriding, excepting only the kinetic aspects of the process. Another objective was an exploration of the critical-ity of the ion nitriding variables: gas composition, pressure, temperature, and time. EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS The equipment used was substantially as described by Jones and Martin.8 The vacuum tank was about 12 in. in diam by about 18 in. high, and consisted of water-cooled stainless steel, with a single small window at the top for viewing inside. This sat on a heavy mild steel base equipped with the main pumping port, pressure control port, and vacuum gaging. A series of variable resistances was interposed between the glow discharge and a large-capacity -40 amp variable primary transformer feeding a 1000-v transformer, but 600 v were about the maximum ordinarily used. With the small l-in.-round, 4-in.-thick discs used for nitriding, the electrical load was usually about 500 v at 0.8 amp. The specimen temperature was controlled by a stainless-steel sheathed chromel-alumel couple, whose junction was in the steel stool upon which the flat discs were placed. These were ground through 400 Sic paper. Cycling of the temperature controller caused -0.2 amp variation in ion current, providing an ample control band. The binary iron alloys were made from vacuum-melted hydrogen-deoxidized electrolytic iron and alloys of 99.9 pct purity. Cast ll-lb-square tapered ingots were forged and hot-rolled to about 11/4-in.-diam rounds. Discs of 1/4 in. thickness by about 1 in. diam were machined from the rods for nitriding specimens. The following alloys were prepared: 1 pct each of Mn, Mo, Cr, Ti, Al, V, Si, and an Fe-0.8 pct C alloy. EXPERIMENTAL VARIABLES Of the variables total gas pressure, nitrogen partial pressure, temperature, and time, only nitrogen partial pressure was found to be critical to the operation. AT the first meeting of the Institute, a paper was read by Mr. Rothwell, calling attention to the importance of at once considering the great waste of anthracite coal under the present system of mining and preparing that fuel for market, and a committee was appointed to examine and report upon the method now in use. About the time the committee were selected, a general resumption of work, after the long strike, took place in the coal regions, and the members of the committee have not in consequence had as much leisure to devote to the study of the question as its importance de¬mands. In the present preliminary report we shall merely sketch out the plan which we propose to pursue in our investigations, so that when our fellow-members are called upon to assist us in our work by fur¬nishing statistics, etc., they may understand more clearly for what object our inquiries will be made. As one of the most practicable methods of obtaining the informa¬tion requisite for an intelligent consideration of our subject, we pro¬pose to send, from time to time, to members and others interested in the mining of anthracite coal, printed sets of questions relating to points under consideration. We would here impress upon our fellow¬-members the importance of filling up these papers as far as they can from their own knowledge. We would, of course, wish each ques¬tion to be answered as fully as possible, but we do not expect every one to answer them all. One question well answered would be of more use to us than the whole paper filled up with answers, many of
