The solubility of chromium in liquid silver and that of molybdenum and tungsten in liquid tin have been determined by equilibrating Ike Liquid in a crucible of the solule metal. Generally the weight of solute in solulion was delermined both chemically and from crucible weight losses. The resulting weight percent solubilily of chromium in silver as a function of absolule temperature T is given by log w = -6660/T + 4.02 in the range 960° to 1445°C, and that of molybdenlttrl in tin by log w = —5050/T + 1. 79 in the range 1200° to 2200°C. The values appear unaffected by minor changes in solute composition. Calculations aye made of the parlial molar heal and excess entropy of mixing. The estimated solubility of tungsten in tin is 0.001 pct at 2000°C. Evidence is presented that molybdenwm dissolves in tin without compound for mation and that tungsten and tin form W10Sn. RECENT developments in coatings, heat transfer, and brazing require a knowledge of equilibrium solubilities in a variety of systems at elevated temperatures. Of particular interest are solid-liquid interactions in metal systems involving dilute solutions. This investigation was undertaken since little is known about the phase relations or solubility of chromium in liquid silver or of molybdenum and tungsten in liquid tin.1,2 EXPERIMENTAL WORK As indicated in Table I, high-purity metals or those of known impurity levels were used. Crucibles were machined from chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten bar stock 1.3 cm diam and 2.2 cm long. Chromium rod was prepared by arc melting and extruding iodide process crystals.3 The five chromium impurity alloys were in the form of 0.6-cm-diam swaged rod. A Cr-0.06N* alloy was prepared by exposure to NH3 at 1150°C in a closed quartz capsule for 24 hr. Because significant nitrogen was lost during annealing in argon at 1600°C,4 the estimated level was 0.01 pct N. Chromium and Mo,W crucibles were outgassed at 1200" and 1600°C, respectively, at 3 X 10-5 mm. The solvent was placed In crucibles of the solute metal- 6 g Ag in chromium, 0.4 g Ag in the five chromium impurity alloys, and 4 g Sn in Mo,W crucibles. The silver and tin series were outgassed at 900" and 110O°C, respectively, and held at the desired solution temperature in a tantalum resistance furnace under 1.05 atm 99.995 pct Ar. An equilibration time of 0.5 to 1 hr was chosen since 0.3-, I-, and 4-hr anneals at 1235°C for Cr-Ag yielded similar results. Temperatures were measured optically to +10°C under essentially black body conditions which were checked against the melting point of silver. The Cr-Ag and Mo-Sn,W-Sn series were respectively equilibrated at 990° to 1400°C and 1200" to 2000°C. Vaporization losses were generally held to <1 pct by the argon. In the 1800" and 2000°C anneals for 0.5 hr, the crucibles were placed in tightly sealed tantalum cans which kept tin losses to <5 pct. After the anneals, the specimens were furnace-cooled. One anneal was made on small Mo-0.02 C, Mo-0.5Ti-0.lZr, and tungsten crucibles containing tin at 2200°C. The metals were sealed in an electron-beam-welded tantalum can of minimum volume. After the anneal, tin was still present in each crucible, none of which was severely attacked. After equilibration, the saturated solvent metal was selectively removed from the crucible by acid leaching. Weight losses sustained by the crucibles were determined from the initial weight minus the final blank-corrected weight after acid leaching. Chemical analyses were performed on some of the samples. Hot 1:l HNO3-H2O removed silver from chromium with the blank running <0.1 mg or <0.002 pct on measured solubility. Tin was removed from molybdenum and tungsten by hot concentrated HC1 with the respective blanks amounting to -0.004 and -0.0004 pct in the presence of tin. The insoluble residues were weighed and checked for composition. The leaching solutions contained traces of the solute metals which were analyzed by colorimetric methods, Diphenyl Carbazide for chromium, Thiocyanate for molybdenum, and Dithiol for tungsten. The total of the two percentages found from the residue and leaching solution minus the blank gave the desired solubility values. On the basis of annealing empty molybdenum and tungsten crucibles, weight losses due to MoO3 or WO3 volatilization were found to be generally 10.4 mg and affect measured solubilities by <0.01pct. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Chromium-Silver . Since no intermediate compounds are reported to form in the Cr-An system,&apos; crucible weight losses and chemical analysis of the entire melt should provide reliable measures of the chromium in solution. Values obtained by the two methods are in agreement as shown by the results for unalloyed chromium in Table II and plotted in Fig. 1. Furthermore, the results are consistent with those previously determined by melting equilibrated silver out of the crucible and analyzing calorimetrically for chromium.&apos; On the basis of limited thermal analysis data, the solubility of chromium in silver has been quoted as 8 pct at the monotectic temperature of -1445°C.1 This investigation indicates an extrapolated solubility of 1.38 pct which is believed to be more reliable. Iwo major studies of the Fe-Cr-C system are available in the literature. The earlier one of Kinzel and crafts&apos; forms the basis for the data most commonly quoted in works of reference (e.g., Metnls HandDook) though the later work of Bungardt el a1.&apos; is more extensive and amenable to analysis in terms of isothermal sections and so forth. However it is evident from examination of either of these studies that the delination of phase boundaries on the basis of the data obtained can only be very approximate. Indeed in several instances the data are so inconclusive that this delineation is a matter of opinion. This note is to report an analysis of experimentally determined carbon activity data in this system, which, originally intended as a means of checking the self-consistency of the data for a number of alloys, enables some conclusions to be drawn concerning the 10503C isothermal section of the iron-rich corner of the system as deducible from the data of Bungardt

The general properties of diffusion in GaAs are reviewed. A total of .fourteen atoms have been studied to date, and activation energies for eleven reported are (in ev): Ga (5.6), As (lo), Zn (2.49), Cd (2.43), Sn (2.5). Mn (2.75). S (4.0). Se (4.2). Ag (0.33), Cu (0.52). and Li (1.0). The dijfusion of the first eight atoms, as measured by Goldstein using radiotracer techniques, established the principle of sub lattice diffusion for both host and impurity atoms, since atoms substituting for gallium have lower activation energies than those substituting for arsenic. The diffusion constant of interstitial copper has been determined for the first time by Hall and Racette using heavily doped p-type samples in which interstitial copper predominates. The anomalous behavior of zinc, which has an abrupt diffusion front and a strong dependence on zinc concentration, has recently been quantitatively explained in terms of an interstitial-substi-tutional equilibrium-diffusion mechanism. Lithium and silver diffuse mainly interstitially, while the diffusion of phosphorus is complicated by the continual formation ofGap. Junction-migration measurements indicate diiferent results than radiotracer techniques, and this is one problem that still remains, together with discrepancies in cadmium-diffusion results, and an unexplained dependence of impurity diffusion on arsenic pressure. BESIDES the usual insights into the behavior of atoms in solids, studies of diffusion in semiconductors have additional importance for device applications. In fact, the amount of diffusion studies performed on a semiconductor might serve as a simple barometer of its technological importance. Thus, the information accumulated for GaAs is not yet quite comparable to that for germanium or silicon, but considerable knowledge is available. The diffusion of at least fourteen atoms has been investigated for GaAs, and the diffusion constants have been determined for eleven of these. Interesting results were found for GaAs that elucidated problems not previously solved for germanium or silicon. For example, the interstitial-diffusion constant for the very fast diffusant, copper, was first measured in GaAs. Also, solutions for interstitial-substitu-tional equilibrium diffusion in extrinsic material were provided first for GaAs, although they are ap- plicable to germanium, silicon, and other semiconductors. Studies in GaAs firmly established the concept of sublattice diffusion, which should have application in many different compound systems. The purpose of this paper is to review briefly the general state of knowledge concerning diffusion in GaAs. First some general aspects of diffusion will be covered, and next attention will be given to the results mentioned above. Diffusion in GaAs has been measured both by radiotracer and junction-penetration techniques, and some discussion will be given of differences in the two sets of results. The comprehensive work of oldsteinl-&apos; has served as the primary reference for the diffusion of well-behaved substitutional atoms in GaAs. Since a review has recently been presented of many of these reults, details of the diffusion data will not be repeated. Neither will any discussion be given of the experimental techniques of diffusion measurements, except to note here, in passing, the simplicity and effectiveness of the precision lapping device employed by Goldstein.&apos; I) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION A) Summary of Experimental Results. Diffusion constants D = Do exp(E/kT) have been determined for eleven atoms in GaAs: a,&apos; AS,&apos; n,&apos;" Cd,&apos;" n,&apos; n,8 s, e,&apos; Ag,O CU," and i." These results are summarized in Table I. In addition, diffusion was investigated for phosphorus,4&apos;12 germanium,I3 and ilicon,&apos; but Do and E were not determined. Radiotracer techniques were used for most of the studies except for lithium, where a combination of chemical and electrical techniques was employed, and germanium and silicon, where junction-migration techniques were applied. It takes off an average of 20 per cent. water besides topping the oil. Part of the crude oil is run through an electrical separator before running to the topping plant, but the entire crude averages about 20 per cent. when it enters the topping plant. DAVID T. DAY, Washington, D. C.-I suppose most of the work contemplated in these large topping plants is simply to deal with topping the oils with only a small percentage of water in them. A. F. L. BELL.-Not more than 2 per cent. of water can be handled in ordinary stills without causing trouble. At our Gavotte refinery, where the oil runs from 15 to 30 per cent. water, we carry 20 lb., pressure oil our stills to hold the framing down, we can do that with small stills, with large one&apos;s it would not be safe; but with a retort, the quantity of water contained in the oil does not affect its working. It simply means additional fuel to evaporate the water.

BEFORE the present company was formed, in 1916, each group of mines comprising the old organizations made its detailed daily and monthly mine cost records along the lines used before the consolidation; that is, there was no attempt made to standardize and compare the stope costs of all mines. The general cost sheets for all mines, however, were standardized, and cumulative labor cost sheets were compiled in the general superintendent&apos;s office. At most of the mines, a daily record or distribution sheet for each working place was kept, showing the number of men, hours of drilling, hours of timbering, hours of tramming, cars of ore, cars of waste, sticks of powder and feet of fuse. This information was kept by each shift boss and entered on the distribution sheet by him or, at some mines, by a tram boss. The superintendent solved his own problems under the direction of the general superintendent, but without coming in touch with other superintendents, either through records or general conferences. Probably 95 per cent. of the stopes were square-set worked by day&apos;s pay; there were some back-filling and shrinkage stopes. Many of the development places, such as shaft sinking, station cutting, drifting and raises had always been run by contract. These contracts were given, for no definite period, at so much per linear foot and were measured monthly, or when completed; the men being paid monthly. In some cases, fairness to the employee, was not maintained. On the whole, there was no standardization. There were no stope contracts, because of the objections of the Western Federation of Miners to general contracting in the mines.

Ball wear in wet grinding mills has been the subject of considerable discussion in the last few years. Its importance to millmen is obvious in view of the fact that ball wear may cost from 2 to 4 per ton of ore for the more fortunate operators and many times this cost when a refractory ore must be reduced to a fine state of comminution. Consequently, any factual information that may be obtained on the nature of ball wear may be applied to introduce changes leading to lower ball consumption and therefore also to lower costs. In 1940, while employed with the Britannia Mining and Smelting Co., Britannia Beach, B.C., I had occasion to investigate factors that might affect ball consumption. We performed a number of tests, which will be briefly described. These tests originated as a result of changing from a 3½-in. ball to a 2-in. ball of different type of manufacture and were motivated by the desire to obtain the best possible type of 2-in. ball. Our testing was helped by the fact that the company operated a one-ton electric furnace, so that it was quite easy to make steel changes. It should be emphasized at the beginning that these tests produced results that in their general application to milling should be interpreted qualitatively rather than quantitatively. As will be evident in the description of the method used in testing, the balls were subjected to an intermittent batch grinding treatment, which may have produced results in rate of steel wear that may not have an accurate correlation with steel consumption in full scale mill operation. However, with this bed and rather arbitrary method of testing, results were obtained that may be of some interest and may stimulate further work on this subject. Unfortunately, owing to pressure of war work, our tests, which we had intended to repeat on a continuous grinding operation, had to be discontinued. Method of Testing Tests Were made in a Small cylindrical mill, rotating at 72 r.P.m. Internal dimensions of the mill were 10½-in. dia. by 9 in. The cylindrical inner surface was lined with rubber and the two ends were formed by steel plates. A charge of 2000 grams dry feed and 2000 C.C. of water was added evev 2 hr., the mill being drained of pulp before the addition of each charge, by tilting and sluicing with water. The mill was run On afternoon and night shift for daily periods of about 15 hr. total grinding time, and each test lasted from 60 to 150 hr. This batch method of testing involved a higher average pulp temperature in the mill, which undoubtedly affected comparative results in Some of the tests. In November, 1926, the American Engineering Standards Committee (now the American Standards Association) called a meeting of representatives of various professional societies and industrial, educational and governmental organizations to consider what action, if any, should be taken on the classification of North American coals. This meeting was called because a system for the use classification of coal, proposed by George H. Ashley, had been referred to the committee by the Coal Mining Institute of America. This meeting, at Pittsburgh, was well attended and was definitely in favor of taking up the whole question of scientific and use classification of coals, including all the various ranks from lignite to anthracite. The American Society for Testing Materials was recommended as the sponsor organization to take charge of the work and organize the sectional committee according to the rules of the American Standards Association. The American Society for Testing Materials proceeded with the organization of the sectional committee, holding a meeting in Philadelphia, June 10, 1927. Officers were elected, regulations adopted, and general plans for carrying out the work were outlined. The total membership of 28 comprising the sectional committee consists of 8 producers, 2 distributors, 9 consumers and 9 members representing general and scientific interest. From this committee three technical committees of 10 to 12 members each were organized: Scientific Classification, H. J. Rose, chairman; Use Classification, W. H. Fulweiler, chairman; Marketing Practice, F. R. Wadleigh, chairman. The Technical Committee on Scientific Classification was requested to formulate a system of coal classification based on chemical and physical properties of coal and with reference to origin and constitution. The Technical Committee on Use Classification was charged with developing a system of classification, if possible, based primarily on the uses of coal and commercial practice; this system to be correlated with the scientific system as far as possible and desirable. The Technical Commitlee on Marketing Practice was formed to collect and collate information on commercial practice for the benefit of the other two committees. The first meetings of the technical committees were held on Nov. 17, 1927, and the first informal progress reports were submitted to the

The results of repressuring (or gas-drive) have been very encouraging to the several companies doing experimental work along these lines in California. The most notable examples are the Shell and the Union Oil companies at Dominguez, the Marland Oil Co. at Seal Beach, and the California Petroleum Corpn. at South Mountain. The results of the Marland test at Seal Beach are interesting in that re pressuring was started while several wells were still flowing; also, on account of the high pressures required to overcome the hydrostatic pressure exerted by high-head edge water. The well first chosen for repressuring is about halfway up the flank of the structure and had been on the beam making about 250 bbl. of fluid daily, cutting about 60 per cent. emulsion. The fluid lcvel was 230 ft. from the surface and the top of the sand was 4393 ft. Tubing was run to 4000 ft. with a packer and the space above the packer was filled with water to balance the high pressures. Gas was started in slowly to allow the fluid to be pushed back into the sand, and required three days at a pressure of 1500 Ib. per sq. in. before starting into formation. The pressure was once built up to 1800 Ib. and the compressor was shut down for a few hours. When again started, the well took gas at 1500 Ib., and after about three weeks the pressure was dropped to 1450 Ib. The present pressures required range between 1400 and 1450 lb. Volumes as high as 1,500,000 cu. ft. per 24 hr. were put into the well. Increases as high as 50 per cent. in production were obtained in wells up-structure with very little increase in wells down-structure. Also, the water cut on one edge well materially decreased. After about 40 days the repressuring was moved to two wells farther down-structure and the well originally repressured was put on production. The result of this was a great increase in the production of wells one location farther down-structure, a rapid increase in one well one location up-structure, and a decrease in production of the wells farthest up-structure. Later the gas started to short-cut to the nearest well down-structure, nullifying to a certain extent the effects of the repressuring work. THIS paper is the result of an investigation made in association with Dr. Charles H. Fulton. Early in 1918 a search was started for methods of utilizing, in the manufacture of basic refractories, certain domestic resources in magnesites, dolomites, and magnesian limestones. Much information was collected during that year and during 1919 regarding magnesite and dolomite deposits. During 1920 and 1921 a research was made into methods of calcining dolomite and separating magnesia therefrom. Some success was attained and many new ideas were brought out in connection with the preparation and utilization of magnesia in the form of "caustic" or light-burned material as well as in the form of refractory or "dead-burned" material. Stimulated by this success, much advance has been made in manufacturing processes for the "plastic magnesia," so called, used for magnesia cement, stucco, flooring and otherwise in the structural industries.

The introductory paper1 of this series described the potential behavior of tin in sodium carbonate and bicarbonate solutions whose pH ranged from 8.4 to 11.2 and demonstrated that significant and reproducible results could be obtained by proper attention to experimental technique. In examining the corrosion of tin under such conditions, it is desirable to know the effects of anions, aside from carbonate, that are likely to be present in commercial materials packaged in tin. Therefore, in this paper the potential behavior of tin in carbonate solutions to which sodium fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, nitrate, monobasic phos-phate, dichromate, perborate and acetate have been added will be dcscribed. For most of the additions, solutions containing 0.001 and 0.01 moles of the added material were studied. Abstract-Activated carbon is a strong adsorbent for amyl xanthate, capable of removing from solution up to a quarter of its own weight in xanthate. In selective flotation systems where depression is unstable, separation efficiency increases with activated carbon additions. The improvements observed are brought about by two mechanisms. First, by removing stripped and residual collector ions from solution, competition between depressant and xanthate is reduced and depression is stabilized. In addition, the texture of the froth phase at high pine oil concentrations is modified by activated carbon such that better drainage between the air bubbles takes place, alleviating the mechanical entrapment of depressed mineral particles. In treating a bulk copper/lead concentrate produced from GECO ore, selectively between galena and chalcopyrite is increased when activated carbon is used. Although the rate of flotation of galena is marginally lowered by activated carbon, a small extension in the duration of flotation allows the lead recovery to increase by 19% at the same recovery of copper. An addition rate of 0.75 kg/ton (1.5 lb/st) of bulk concentrate is suggested as optimum from this testwork. However, the actual level wed in the mill is dependent upon the residual concentrations of collector and frother in the bulk concentrate Pulp.

Modern developments in alloy steels have been so rapid and diverse that engineering practice has scarcely had time to re-appraise all items of past experience wherein conclusions became axiomatic under conditions that no longer apply. A case in point is the wet screening of abrasive ores within the fine range still looked upon as belonging exclusively to classifiers. By virtue of the development of stainless steels (18 per cent Cr, 8 per cent Ni), it is no longer true that classifiers are more economical than screens in closed circuit with large-tonnage ball or rod mills at 65 or even 100 mesh, provided a selective overgrind of the higher-gravity constituents of the ore is not desired. Wet screening of ores is a highly corrosive as well as an abrasive operation, because of the inevitably high degree of oxygenation of the water. Screen cloth of ordinary or spring-steel wire almost at once becomes pitted and covered with a film of corrosion products, which causes rust-blinding of fine-mesh screens and offers high frictional impedance to the flow of ore particles. On the other hand, the well-known properties of stainless steel enable it to maintain a bright surface, and so to eliminate blinding either by ore particles or by corrosion products. That a large-tonnage mill grinding hard ore to 65 mesh can be operated economically in closed circuit with screens instead of classifiers has recently been demonstrated at the Copper Cliff concentrator of the International Nickel Co.; in the test to be described, a 6½ by 12½-ft. Marcy rod mill ground from 625 to 820 tons of ore per day to approximately 65 mesh, operating in closed circuit with three 4 by 5-ft. Hum-mer screens, without any classifier. Stainless-steel cloth gave an indicated life of several months. There was no difficulty with blinding, yet dilution and spray water could be controlled so that screen undersize averaged not less than 40 per cent solids. In contrast, ordinary carbon steel was pitted and blind with rust within 40 hours.

IN connection with certain coöperative work carried on between the Ordnance Department of the U. S. Army, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and the U. S. Geological Survey during the year 1918, it was the writers&apos; privilege to make metallographic examinations of a great many test bars and other pieces of nickel-steel gun forgings. The material studied came from many different steel plants throughout the country and consisted both of forgings that had been accepted by the Ordnance Department and those that had failed to pass the specified physical tests. In general, these tests require a minimum tensile strength of 95,000 lb. (42,091 kg.), an elastic limit of 65,000 lb. (29,483 kg.), an 18 per cent. elongation, and a 30 per cent. reduction in area. An average chemical composition of the steel studied is 0.38 per cent. carbon and 2.9 per cent. nickel. The steel was of both basic electric and basic open-hearth manufacture. The object of the metallographic work was two-fold: to assist in detecting defects in the steel and, if possible, to suggest remedies for the same; and to obtain as much information as possible in regard to the relation of the microstructure of the metal to its physical properties. The greater part of the investigation was devoted to defective metal that failed to pass the ordnance specifications. Many types and kinds of more or less serious defects thus came under observation, but most of these were due to the attempts by the manufacturer to meet the enormous demand for ordnance steel with more or less inadequate equipment, and were soon remedied. Two defects, the so-called "flakes" or "snowflakes" and a certain "fibrous" or "woody" fracture, were encountered so frequently and were so disastrous to the steel that the greater part of the study was devoted to them. A statistical technique to identify and describe naturally occurring zones in a reservoir and to correlate these zones from well to well is described. The technique is particularly useful in describing a reservoir where cross flow between adjacent strata is important in determining reservoir behavior. Although it has been used primarily for permeability zonation, the technique is general and can be used to correlate any reservoir property or related data, such as the information contained in well logs. INTRODUCTION One of the first problems encountered by the reservoir engineer in predicting or interpreting fluid displacement behavior during secondary recovery processes is that of organizing and using the large amount of data available from core analysis. Permeabilities pose particular problems in organization because they usually vary by more than an order of magnitude between different strata. Due to the sheer volume, it is almost always necessary to group data and to use an average value to represent a number of measurements. Perhaps the most common method now used to group permeability data is the capacity-fraction technique, which ranks permeabilities in order of magnitude, regardless of the physical location of the permeabilities within the reservoir. The cumulative per cent capacity is plotted against cumulative per cent thickness. This plot is divided into an arbitrary number of zones, generally of equal thickness. Five zones (or averaged groups of data) usually are obtained, each of which is treated as homogeneous in subsequent calculations. The division so obtained has no physical meaning; strata in the same zone, calculation-wise, are usually not adjacent in the reservoir. Reservoir engineering techniques being developed will handle crossflow that occurs between adjacent communicating reservoir strata because of imbibition and gravity segregation. Since crossflow occurs between physically adjacent layers within the reservoir, a new zonation technique recognizing the actual location of strata within the reservoir is necessary. Similarly, the recognition of natural zones is important for predictions of oil recovery by processes involving diffusion. One such process is miscible displacement, where predictions of lateral diffusion within the reservoir must recognize the actual location of the invaded zones in relation to the rest of the formation. Natural zones must also be adequately recognized to account for heat transfer within the reservoir during thermal exploitation. Because of the complexity of the problem, statistics appear to offer the only practical hope of dividing a reservoir into physically-meaningful natural zones. This paper presents a statistical technique for identifying these natural zones and for ascertaining which ones are likely to be continuous between adjacent wells. The zones defined have minimum variation of permeability internally and a maximum variation between zones. The technique is general and can thus be applied to reservoir properties other than permeability. The method will guide the reservoir engineer in estimating which zones are likely to be continuous between wells. However, a statistical correlation based on permeabilities in two different wells is no guarantee that the zones so defined are, in fact, continuous. Rather, the assumption of continuity must be consistent with geological data concerning the depositional environment, as well as justified on the basis of engineering judgment in combination with statistics, just as judgment is required with conventional zonation methods. CALCULATION PROCEDURE The reservoir zonation technique is a two-step operation. The steps are individually described, and a sample calculation is presented in the Appendix. ZONATION OF INDIVIDUAL WELLS First, the set of permeability data at a single well is zone, into Zones. These zones are selected so that variation is minimized within the zones and maximized between the zones. THE Montana Phosphate Products Co., subsidiary of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, operates three phosphate properties north and northeast of Garrison, Powell County, Mont. Production of all three is from the same phosphate bed, a 3 to 4-ft. member of the Phosphoria formation, whose outcrop is traceable across the mountains of the Garnet Range in a series of southeasterly pitching folds. Because of topographical differences and of variations in the attitude of the bed, each property has its own mining methods and problems. Most of the phosphate rock produced since I930 has been shipped to the plant of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. at Trail, B.C., where it is treated with sulphuric acid for conversion to phosphoric acid, which in turn is used to produce various fertilizers. HISTORY The occurrence of rock phosphate in Montana has been known. since 1910, and the Garrison area was mapped by the United States Geological Survey in 1913In the nineteen twenties William Anderson, owner of a ranch 8 miles north of Garrison, discovered phosphate on his land, and the Montana Phosphate Co., which later became the Montana Phosphate Products Co., was formed to work the deposit. Montana Phosphate Products Co. later obtained United States leases on two adjoining parcels of ground, and this combined property, known as the Anderson mine, has been the main source of Consolidated&apos;s phosphate rock. The mine now includes an adjoining parcel leased from Anaconda and mined from the Anderson workings. In 1940, the Graveley mine, a small privately owned property 6 miles east of the Anderson, was leased from the owner by Montana Phosphate Products Co., and a U. S. lease held by Graveley on some adjoining ground was subleased. In 1943 the Luke mine, on the Mineral Hill property, 1 ¾ miles south-southwest of the Graveley, a U. S. lease, which previously had produced a few thousand tons, was optioned from the lessees by Montana Phosphate Products Co., and is now being developed. At both these mines the rock is appreciably higher grade than at the Anderson mine. GEOLOGY The Phosphoria formation is the Permian member of an extensive sequence of Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks. It is underlain by Pennsylvanian (Quadrant) quartzite and Mississippian limestone, and overlain without any marked unconformity by Jurassic (Ellis) shale and Cretaceous shale and sandstone. In the study 208 heavy mineral concentrates (pan samples) from Jameson Land, East Greenland, are considered. Each concentrate has been analysed (by spectroscopy) for the content of (approx.) 25 elements. Furthermore the exact sampling position and the geological characteristics of the environment have been registered. In the study is shown how different multivariate methods combined with geological knowledge of the area can be used in the interpretation and classification of the data. Special emphasis is put on the problem of finding reliable expressions for the background level of the element concentrations in the area. This is done by means of severel discrimination procedures. The other main subject is a demonstration of the applicability of isoscore maps - originating from factor analyses - in the evaluation of the co-variability of the data, and thus give another way of classifying the individual samples according to the content of different elements.

Substantial priming was a considered necessity for proper initiation of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixes as ANFO began to carve its niche in the mining industry in the latter fifties. Heavy priming accompanied the introduction of prills and oil to many blasting operations, large charges of high explosives were commonly used at the bottom, top and frequent intervals throughout the column. As the quality of ammonium nitrate improved and operators became more experienced, primer costs began to diminish. Increased experimentation continued with reduced primer costs a main objective. Cast primers were introduced and became accepted as an excellent companion for ANFO. Although the trend toward larger diameter boreholes became increasingly popular, emphasis on lower and lower priming costs continued. A primer was simply required to produce any type of initiation within the ANFO column to be considered adequate. Suddenly ANFO priming had digressed from excessive to marginal. Early experimental data from test site and laboratory indicated that ANFO had a tendency to react inefficiently in the initiation region of the column unless substantially primed. This was evidenced by the presence of unstable reaction rates detected with newly developed detonation velocity measuring equipment. These low order or "transient" velocities were believed to originate because of inadequate primer strength or a primer diameter to column diameter mismatch. However, the nature of this experimental work was generally confined to small diameter column charges detonated in iron pipe simulated bore-holes. It was questionable whether the smaller scale laboratory data was applicable to large 12 1/4 and 15-in. boreholes.
