A CLEAR understanding of the factors that deter-mine the consumption of zinc metal is essential to a proper survey of the future of the industry and the relation of the several producing districts. With a view of explaining a sound basis for the consider-ation of some of the problems facing the zinc-mining industry of the Oklahoma-Kansas and Missouri district some of these factors are here set out. The zinc industry of the United States furnishes metal for three major uses, viz.: (1) zinking iron and steel (galvanizing); (2) brass making; (3) sheet rolling. Other important uses are for lead desilverization, the manufacture of castings, including die castings, and the manufacture of zinc oxide by the French process, which consists in burning spelter. The use of zinc for galvanizing comprises the coating of sheets, tubes, wire and shaped products, the latter ranging from chains to buckets. The brass-making industry may be sub-divided into manufacture of red brass, yellow brass and white brass, the percentage of zinc in these products being roughly 30, 40 and 80 respectively. The use of white brass is relatively a new thing and it may attain considerable proportions as a substitute for yellow brass. Experimental work on the combustion oil recovery process has consisted of both laboratory and field studies. Although field experiments are the ultimate test of any oil recovery process, they are costly, time consuming and difficult to analyze quantitatively. Laboratory combustion tube experiments can be opertzted far more rapidly and cheaply, but are subject to scaling and interpretation problems. This paper points out some important design problems, operational criteria and considerations in2portunt to interpretation of results. An analytical hcut model of movement of a burning front axiully along a cylinder with heat loss through an annular insulation was developed. The result was used to identify steady-state temperatrrre distributions both ahead of and behind the burning front, with and without heat loss. Results indicate potential operating limitations on the minimum burning front rielocity (or air flux) which may be used for any given combustion tube. Results also enable estimating the effective thermal diffusivity and over-all heat loss from experimental data and thickness of the brnning zone. Resu lts of operation of a combustion tube constructed recently verify this preliminary theory in the region immediately ahead of and behind the burning front surprisinRly well. INTRODUCTION Many field and laboratory studies of the forward combustion oil recovery process have been conducted since the early publications of Kuhn and Kochl and Grant and Szasz2 in 1953 and 1954. In view of the complex and costly nature of this type of investigation, it is not surprising that no complete theory of the nature of the forward combustion Drocess is yet available. However, gross effects are understood well enough that reasonable design procedures are available for planning field operations. Nelson and McNeil 3,4 have published two comprehensive papers concerning design procedures. One major consideration in planning field operations is the fuel concentration at the burning front. Fuel concentration controls air requirements — an important cost factor in forward combustion. Although fuel concentration can be estimated from field test results by various methods, results are subject to great uncertainty in view of natural limitations on experimental observations. Nelson and hlcNeil4 recommend that fuel concentration be determined from laboratory combustion tube studies. Fuel concentration is only one of many important factors which can be studied by combustion tube experimentation. An obvious goal of imporrance must be development of a comprehensive theory of the forward combustion process. If a theory of this process can be established which matches controlled laboratory experimentation, it should be possible to apply this theory to field operating conditions with some confidence. Laboratory combustion tube studies have already yielded important information concerning the combustion process. However, details concerning the design, construction and operation of combustion tubes are rare. Combustion tubes used by various investigators vary in size, length and mode of operation. Therefore, one purpose of this paper is to present considerations important to design, construction and operation of a combustion tube. In regard to previous combustion tube studies, attention is called to Refs. 1 through 9. These references describe a wide variety of equipment types and present a great deal of pertinent experimental data. In general, combustion tubes usually consist of thin-walled stainless steel tubes containing an oil sand pack mounted within a pressure jacket. Provisions have often been made to heat the tube ex tern a lly by separately controlled heaters to reduce heat losses. This step usually permits operation at low air fluxes (air rate per square foot burning front surface) similar to those encountered in field operations. Burning is usually conducted from the air inlet end of the tube to the outflow end. The tube orientation used has been vertical or horizontal. In a reservoir when gas comes out of solution and rises, additional pressure is created because of the change in position of this gar in the bounded volume. If this pressure effect is not taken into account as a pseudo-influx ill mate rial balance calculations on reservoirs in which there is evolving gas, an error is introduced that is directly proportional to the length of oil column and amount of gas evolved and inversely proportional to the reservoir pressure. In reservoirs with small oil column this pseudo-influx is of little importance. The larger the oil column the more important the effect becomes. The most important application, however, will be for reservoirs with declining pressure in which increasing water entry has been indicated by material balance calculations. It could be that this indication is the result of the cited pseudo-influx and not water entry at all. This paper attempts to explain this phenomenon in relation to material balance calculations and prevents an approximate method of determining tile pseudo-influx. INTRODUCTION Only recently has the pressure-volume relationship of gas rising in a liquid appeared in engineering literature, although its effect has been discussed for several years—especially among engineers engaged in drilling operations. The writer published a paper in 1957 in which this phenomenon was examined in relation to blowouts in drilling wells.' Also, in 1957 Stegemeier and Matthews' authored a paper in which the relationship was presented with respect to pressure build-up tests when shutting in producing wells. In this paper the effect will be called "pressure inversion" which is descriptive of the phenomenon. Fundamentally, the effect just mentioned is the result of changing the position of a quantity of energy contained within the gas itself (as a result of its compression) within the bounded volume in which the gas exists. If the gas were allowed to expand "beyond all bounds" there could be no pressure inversion effect. This is because all of the energy contained within the gas as a result of compression would have been re- PRESSURE INVERSION A phase that has not been discussed in the literature is the effect of pressure inversion upon material balance calculations in reservoirs in which the reservoir pressure drops with reservoir withdrawal and is below the bubble point. This action releases solution gas which, after the critical gas saturation has been reached, will tend to rise and collect at the top of the reservoir. The pseudo-influx caused by this effect could be great enough in reservoirs of large oil column and high permeability to render invalid any analyzer studies made on them — if pressure inversion has not been taken into account. Most suspect would be those reservoirs with large oil column in which increasing water entry has been predicted but the bottom wells have not yet produced water. Example 1 Simply stated, this phenomenon exists in oil reservoirs because of the difference in density and expansibility between gas and oil. For example, if a bubble of gas exists at the bottom of a 1,000-ft column of oil having a gradient of 0.30 psi/ft with the pressure at the top of the column zero, the bubble of gas will be compressed to a pressure of 300 psi. If temperature and the combined volume of the oil column and the gas bubble remain constant, as the gas bubble rises in the oil column it will have the same volume and consequently the same pressure at any point. Under these conditions when thc bubble reaches the top of the oil column, the pressure will be approximately 300 psi at the surface and approximately 600 psi at the bottom of the oil column. If it is assumed that the oil is incompressible the pressures will be exactly 300 and 600 psi, respectively.

S. F. EMMONS RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP. The movement was started by a number of the friends and admirers of the late S. F. Emmons, Economic Geologist of the United States Geological Survey, to perpetuate his name through a fellowship to be known as the " S. F. Emmons Research Fellowship," and they have succeeded in raising some $13,000 for the purpose of carrying on research work in economic geology. The Committee in charge of this Memorial Fund has succeeded in obtaining the co-operation of Professors Kemp, of Columbia, Irving, of Yale, and Lindgren, of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in the administration of this fellowship. These three gentlemen are respectively geologists of the institutions mentioned and are exceptionally qualified to determine in what direction the fund can be best administered. An investigation was conducted on fine grained airon wire to measure the influence of the temperature of deformation on strain aging near room temperature. Specimens were deformed various amounts at 77°, 195°, or 273°K and aged. The strain aging was followed by either internal friction or return of the yield-point measurements. The results show that strain aging occurs in three stages. During the first stage there is small, almost immediate return of the yield point. The solute carbon concentration, as mesured by internal friction, remains constant in stage I but is lower than the concentration in the unstrained condition. In the second stage, the solute concentration decreases while the magnitude of the yield point increases. In the third stage, the solute atoms continue to drain from the solution, the yield point approaches a maximum, and the strain-hardening coefficient and flow curve increase. The kinetics of the strain aging reaction are not the same for the two sets of measurements since the internal friction results lag behind the yield-point measurements. However, the strain-aging kinetics measured at 44° and 64°C showed no effect due to the difference in initial deformation temperature; nor were the strain aging kinetics influenced by low-temperature anneals at 77°, 195°, and 273°K. 1 HE object of this investigation was to measure the effect of initial deformation temperature on the strain aging of a-iron by tensile tests (i.e., return of the yield point) and internal friction methods, to correlate the results of the two measuring methods, and to measure the effect of low-temperature annealing (<273°K) after low-temperature deformation upon strain aging. The experiments were performed on fine-grained a-iron wire containing 0.02 wt pct c.l According to Thomas and Leak,&apos; return of the yield point and internal friction are similar measures of strain aging since both are dependent on solute atoms leaving the solid solution. The decrease in internal friction as a function of aging time is indicative of the removal of solute atoms from the solid solution, while the return of the yield point as a function of the aging time gives the rate of arrival of solute atoms at the dislocations. According to Cottrell and Bilby,3 during aging the solute atoms create an "atmosphere" which locks the dislocations and causes a return of the yield point on subsequent testing. It has been shown that after low-temperature neutron bombardment, a-iron goes through a stage of recovery at low temperatures which can be attributed to the annealing of iron interstitials&apos; and/or vacancies.4 If, after low-temperature deformation, there is an interaction during a low-temperature anneal between mobile point defects and the solute atoms (i.e., carbon atom interaction with vacancy or iron interstitial), it is possible that some solute atoms will be found at defect sites other than dislocations. Such changes in the sinks for the carbon atoms might be expected to alter the strain-aging kinetics sufficiently to be detected by either inter-

ALTHOUGH the open-hearth charge contributes CO, C02, H2, A and water vapor to the combustion gases and absorbs oxygen from them, in the main the thermal effects in the melting charge and molten bath can be considered independently of those in fuel combustion; the latter then is regarded simply as the source of the net heat required to finish a heat of steel. First of all, it should be remembered that a large percentage of the heat supplied to the bath is furnished by oxidation of the various elements in the charge itself. If this charge consisted of 80 to 100 per cent of hot metal and the oxidation were accomplished by blowing in air or oxygen, as in the bessemer converter, the net heat absorption would be negative; that is, the bath would contribute part of the heat required to keep the melting chamber hot, in addition to that contained in the finished steel and slag. In actual open-hearth practices, probably the nearest approach to this is in the duplex furnace, charged with bessemer-blown metal and some hot metal, where very little heat is required to complete the refining and nearly all the heat energy from fuel combustion is used to keep the roof and walls of the melting chamber up to around 2900 to 3000 F (1600 to 1650 C), so that the bath will not cool off during the refining. The other extreme is with all-cold charges containing around 80 per cent steel scrap and 20 per cent cast iron or cold pig iron, in which case a very large proportion of the heat in the bath at tap is supplied from the fuel combustion. THERMAL EFFECTS IN MELTING In a typical heat, the fuel furnishes about four million British thermal units per ton of steel produced. The heat required, for the metallurgical processes is not easily defined in useful manner but it ranges downward from about one million Btu, depending not only on the charge but on the manner of calculation. The airborne geophysicist is a busy man these days. In his plane he may have the airborne magnetometer, the airborne scintillation counter, and the airborne electromagnetic surveying system. Each of these is an independent tool, but all require additional auxiliary equipment for locating the aircraft in space: recording altimeters and Shoran or aerial cameras. Now there is still another piece of equipment, the airborne magnetic gradiometer, an accessory to the magnetometer. To understand its uses, consider the function of the magnetometer itself. Aside from detecting magnetic ore, the airborne magnetometer finds greatest use in spotting intrusions of igneous material. Where there is enough contrast in magnetic susceptibility of igneous rock and adjacent formations, it outlines the intrusion. Certain minerals also influence the magnetometer directly, but with the exception of magnetite and possibly one or two others, their effect is weak and can be detected only when there is sufficient ore and the magnetometer flight passes very close to it.

(written discussion *).-Mr. Stone refers to cadmium as one of the worst impurities in ores used for the production of zinc oxide for pigment purposes, because it is very volatile and its dark brown oxide and bright yellow sulphide both have strong coloring powers so that small fractions of 1 percent. injure the whiteness of the oxide. Numerous tests have recently been made by the American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. to determine what effect the percentage of cadmium, as ordinarily present in zinc ores, has upon the color of oxide made from such ores by the usual grate-furnace process. It has been found that while the cadmium is readily volatile and may be detected in the oxide product by chemical analysis, the oxide product is not discolored, but is of a clear white color. Analysis of the 12 leading brands of zinc oxide, French process, lead-free, and leaded grades now on the market for pigment purposes, show them to contain from 0.02 to 0.35 per cent. cadmium, figured as metal. If these proportions of cadmium were present as oxide or sulphide, the percentages would run from approximately 0.022 to 0.40 per cent. in the first case and 0.025 to 0.45 per cent in the latter case. All these grades of oxide are widely used for pigment purposes and are of a clear white color, except the leaded grades, the whiteness of which may be diminished by the lead sulphate. LEAD and tin mixed together make an alloy through an attachment of natural affinity which they have with each other, so that when they are mixed it is difficult to recognize by the sight which one it is, if the essences of their qualities are not surpassed by more than half. If, indeed, one can be recognized, it is the tin which gives off a certain sharp odor to the sense of smell, besides having a greater hardness and whiteness. The best of these is the one that is the purest in its kind. In the alloy of tin it is the one that is the whitest and hardest, or, when it is bent or some thin end of it is held tightly by the teeth, is heard to crackle as frozen water does. Because this happens more with this than with other metals, I do not wish now to inquire into it. It is enough that it be a sign for recognizing when tin is pure or mixed. Pewterers say that it should be joined in alloy with lead and that it is better for working when it contains four or six pounds to the hundred because it makes it softer to the hammer and more fluid in casting. But I do not like to hear this, even if all they say is true, for I see that the tin that comes from England, when worked as well as in cakes that show it to be pure, is much more beautiful and better in all works than is that made in Venice. And I believe that it is not better for any work when mixed than when pure, except for the advantage of the master who, if he does nothing else, sells lead that is worth little for tin that is worth much. I find that when mixed it serves in only two things. One is when it is wished to make a solder for copper, for use when it is not worth while to solder the bottoms and large pieces of vessels with low-grade silver as should be done. The other is when master potters calcine it in order to make glazes and to apply white to their vases. I consider lead to be useless in all other works of any kind of metal, since it unites with none of the other metals of good company except tin.

THE original trucks at Castle Dome were 30-ton Knuckeys with 150 hp, H-series Cummins engines and 15-ton Euclids with the same engines. The Euclids were used early in the operation, working with 2 1/2-yd Diesel shovels on stripping and later in opening new benches where the lack of room favored the smaller trucks because of their shorter turning radius. They have also been used on road building and similar jobs. On regular production, where the 30-ton trucks can be used, they are not economical.

Miners have observed for many years that as pillars are removed in mining operations the pillar adjacent to those mined out frequently shows evidence of being compressed. Although this has been known for a long time, little or no information is available concerning how far from the mining area the pillars are affected in this manner, or how great is the magnitude of the compression, or concerning the manner or characteristic way in which the compression acts, as the mined-out area approaches the pillar under consideration. The writer made a study of pillar action in the Mona mine of the Arkwright Coal Co., partly to get some quantitative data on the deformation of coal-mine pillars. The study was not completed but it seems best to present the information that was obtained. Method of Measurement Fig. 1 shows the details of the apparatus used for measuring the deformation. This is permanently attached to the pillar. Fig. 2 shows the details of the gauge that records the deformation. This gauge is removable and was used to measure the deformation at all the stations. The recording dial is graduated in thousandths of an inch and records measurements up to one inch. Fig. 3 shows how the removable gauge is placed in the instrument. When installing the instrument in the side of the pillar, all loose coal near by was removed and a trench 4 to 6 in. deep, and approximately 1 ft. wide, was dug in the pillar. In this trench near the top and the floor, the holes holding the instrument were bored. These holes were then partly filled with thin cement and the rods were inserted. The remaining space in the holes was tamped full of cement. At this time, by carefully manipulating the permanent rods and clamps and adjustable pin, it was possible to adjust the instrument so that the removable gauge would stand true and measure any vertical deformation between the top and bottom rods. Fig. 4 is a photograph of one of the instruments installed, showing the removable gauge in place.

THE chief ore of lithium is spodumene, a lithium-aluminum silicate containing up to 3 pct lithium. The preparation of lithium salts from spodumene is costly because of the low concentration of the metal and the difficulty of separating it from the other alkali metals present. Dr. Kroll&apos;s and Dr. Schlecten&apos;s recent paper&apos; has reviewed various methods proposed for preparation of lithium. It will be seen from this paper that the methods proposed to date have required one or another of the lithium salts as a raw material. The high cost of these salts has been the chief item of expense in the lithium metal produced. This situation has made it interesting to investigate the possibility of producing the metal directly from spodumene. When spodumene is calcined at 1000°C in the presence of lime, lithium oxide is replaced in the ore as is evidenced by the fact that it may be leached from the reaction mixture with water.2 Free energy calculations suggested that lithium oxide might be reduced with aluminum or silicon and the lithium produced distilled from the reaction mixture by heating to about 1000°C in a vacuum. These facts taken together suggested that it might be possible to prepare lithium metal directly from spodumene by heating a mixture of the ore, lime, and a suitable reducing agent in vacuum and distilling off the lithium metal as formed. THE REPLACEMENT OF Li20 IN SPODUMENE A series of experiments were undertaken to determine the ratio of lime to spodumene necessary to free substantially all the lithium oxide present in the ore. The spodumene used in these experiments was supplied by Foote Mineral Co. in the form of powder of about 200 mesh. Analysis of the spodumene was as follows: [ ] Lime (cp -200 mesh) was added in various ratios to spodumene and thoroughly mixed in a ball mill. Two hundred gram samples of spodumene-lime mixtures were charged loosely in fireclay crucibles and held at 1000°C in a gas-fired furnace for 5 hrs. The product in each case was ground to pass 140 mesh and then placed in a thimble in a soxhlet extractor. Extraction with water was carried on for 6 hrs. After this period the extract was reduced in volume by evaporation in order to precipitate dissolved lime and was then filtered and titrated with 1/4 normal hydrochloric acid. After correcting for residual calcium oxide in solution, the alkali present was calculated as lithium oxide. The results of these experiments are shown in Table I and Fig I. At lime-spodumene ratios less than 1.5, the products were invariably fused. At the ratio of 1.5 and above, the product was loosely sintered with little evidence of fusion. MINING by hydraulic process of the important gold-bearing gravels of the Sacramento Valley in the basins of the Yuba, Bear and American rivers began in 1853, and continued at an ever-increasing rate for 30 years. In its most active days it reached an annual production of $15,000,000, and averaged $10,000,000 per year over the 30 years. During that period no provisions were made to prevent the debris from being dis-charged into the water courses, and ultimately large quantities of silt, sand and gravel were washed down to the lower valleys; filling channels, causing overflow of agricultural lands and difficulty in maintaining navigable depths in the Sacramento River. Agitation and suits filed because of these damages finally resulted in the injunction decision of Judge L. B. Sawyer,1 in the U.S. Circuit Court, Jan. 23, 1884, which closed down practically all hydraulic mining operations not having means to restrain their debris. In 1893 (approved March 1, 1893), Congress passed the act introduced by Representative Anthony Caminetti, of California, creating the California Debris Com-mission, composed of three officers assigned from the Engineer Corps of the U.S. Army, and since that time it has been legal and possible within the drainage systems of Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers to conduct hydraulic mining of gold-bearing gravels behind dams built under this commission&apos;s permit and supervision. In the watersheds of the Trinity and Klamath rivers, which flow directly to the Pacific Ocean and do not affect navigation or agriculture, operating permits from the California Debris Commission are not required. There is a measure of restriction there, however,. through what is known as the Trinity and Klamath River Fish and Game Dis-trict. Chap. 215, Stat. 1931, in order to secure relatively clear water for the fishing season, provides that between July 15 and October 15 each year there must not be discharged into these rivers debris that will cause a turbidity greater than a content of 50 parts per million in the

R301 is a clad aluminum alloy, composed of a core of a duralumin-type alloy clad with a magnesium silicide alloy. It differs from other well-known clad alloys in that the cladding and the core respond to the same heat-treatments, and therefore the cladding contributes appreciably to the mechanical properties of the material. In Table 1 are reported the compositions of the core and cladding alloy for the material used for the experiments. [ ] In clad aluminum alloys where the core contains copper and the cladding does not, at elevated temperatures the copper tends to diffuse from the core through the cladding. This fact is well known and many investigations have been conducted to determine the features of this diffusion.1-7 Most of those investigations cover materials clad with pure aluminum; the present investigation covers a material clad with an alloy. Since the cladding thickness on R301 varies with the gauge, as shown in Table 2, several gauges were investigated. [ ] MATERIAL AND PROCEDURE The material used was sheet of the following gauges: 0.025, 0.040, 0.064, 0.102, 0.170. Cut in pieces approximately 3 by 5 in., it was in the cold-rolled state and was soaked for increasing times at the following temperatures: 910°F., 940°F., 970°F. A Lindberg cyclone furnace was used for the experiments. The procedure was as follows: The furnace was started empty with controlling pyrometer set at the determined temperature. After the furnace had reached that temperature, it was run for some 20 to 30 min. empty, in order to allow the temperature inside to become stabilized. Then the first samples were introduced. A load thermocouple, with recording pyrometer, was connected with the sample of the heaviest gauge. About 10 min. was required for the material to reach temperature and the soaking time was counted from that point. After 200 min. soaking, the second group of samples was introduced without stopping the furnace. After 200 min. more, the third group of samples was introduced, and so on, until the last sample had been introduced. Every time the furnace was opened and new samples were added, a drop of temperature was registered by the thermocouple connected with the material

This paper deals with the Asarco method for the determination of equipment availability. It is apparent that no single availability equation will provide all of the information necessary for the complete record of equipment availability. In the Asarco system, three separate availability records are carried on major equipment. The first is mechanical availability, the second is operational availability, and the third is a historical record of equipment use. The derivation of the three items and the definitions of the time elements used in the various availability equations are presented and discussed. The Mission unit of American Smelting and Refining Co. is located in Pima County, Ariz., approximately twenty miles southwest of Tucson. The unit consists of an open pit copper mine and concentrator. The concentrate is shipped by rail to company smelters at Hayden, Ariz., or El Paso, Tex. Mine stripping began at Mission in the fall of 1959, and construction of the 15,000 tpd concentrator was started in the spring of 1960. The first ore was treated in midsummer of 1961 and full ore production was reached in August 1961. At that time over 46 million tons of material had been moved from the pit. Current production (ore and waste) averages over 100,000 tpd. Total production to date (ore and waste) is over 120 million tons. The distillation of bituminous coals at what is commonly termed low temperature, and the quantities, nature and adaptabilities of the products have been the subject of considerable experimentation, during recent years. Fortunately, the earlier work in this country was done by men whose scientific training qualified them properly to record and interpret the results of their experiments. The work of Prof. Parr, of the University of Illinois, is especially notable in this respect. Prof. Parr&apos;s work, added to that of English experimenters, demon-strated-certain things to a degree which is generally regarded as convincing. They have proved that a caking bituminous coal, when subjected to a temperature of not more than 1000" F. (preferably somewhat less) will yield light tar having low specific gravity (about 1.06) and high value; also, that this yield, with a given coal, will depend upon the percentage of hydrocarbons in the coal, the maximum temperature used, and the promptness with which the distillate gases are removed. It is assumed that air is excluded from the retort, and that the coal is subjected to heat for a sufficient time to drive off all of the tarry hydrocarbons. The results attained in the first, or low-temperature stage of the car-bocoal process, recently described by C. T. Malcolmson,1 corroborate these general principles. It is the purpose of the writer to describe other work of a practical nature, directed toward the commercial adaptation of these principles, which was begun nearly two years ago; this investigation was assisted by A. J. Sayers, of the Link-Belt Co., and Carl Scholz. The first step was to draft tentative designs for the handling of the coal and coke so as to produce a coke having a suitable structure for sizing, storage, shipment, and handling, without the necessity of briquetting. Prof. Parr&apos;s results had indicated that the rather open-pored volatile coke produced by him had a low ignition point, which would contribute toward easy control of the fire in stoves, house furnaces, fire-boxes, and boilers. Desulphurization of liquid iron by reducing slags of the electric-furnace type was studied from 65 heats. Variations were made in basicity over a wide range and in FeO up to about 5 pct for their effects on desulphurization. The role of FeO in desulphurization from the blast furnace, to the electric furnace, to the oxidizing conditions of the open hearth is shown to fit a relatively simple pattern of behavior. THE mechanism which controls the desulphurization of molten iron by basic slags has been the object of several investigations. In particular, equilibrium determinations have been made both in the field of basic open-hearth slags, which have a high iron-oxide concentration, and in the field of blast-furnace slags which have a very low iron-oxide concentration. In both cases the desulphurization ratio has been found to increase with increasing basicity of the slags; however, the mechanism of desulphurization differs in the two cases. In basic open-hearth slags desulphurization occurs mainly as a partition of iron sulphide:&apos; FeS * (FeS) and the desulphurization ratio is approximately independent of iron-oxide concentration in the slag. In blast-furnace slags the concentration of iron oxide is very low as a result of the highly reducing conditions in which they are formed. The controlling reaction for desulphurization is then:2,3 FeS + (CaO) <=* (CaS) + (FeO) The slags of the reducing stage in the electric furnace have an iron-oxide concentration which is intermediate between blast-furnace and open-hearth slags. The study of the mechanism of desulphurization for these slags has been the object of this investigation. The importance of low (FeO) in the slag for desulphurization was first verified by Bardenheuer and Geller,& who found that high desulphurization ratios were obtained in highly reduced slags. It was recognized" hat iron oxide in the slag becomes a controlling factor in desulphurization only at FeO concentrations approximately under 5 pct. A recent investigation conducted by Buehl,7 upon the suggestion of one of the authors, confirmed this opinion from the results obtained from a heat conducted in a small arc furnace. In the present investigation, slags of very high basicity, such as often are encountered in the basic electric furnace, could not be studied, but equilibrium data have been obtained for slags in a wide basicity range. The iron-oxide concentration in these slags ranged from 0.08 to 15 pct and was controlled by the addition of silicon to the metal. Other constituents of the slags were mainly CaO, MgO, SiO2, A120,, and CaF,. The experimental technique was essentially the same as that of previous investigations.1 8-lo In an open magnesia-lined induction furnace, 65 lb of Armco ingot iron was melted. An atmosphere of hydrogen was maintained over the melt for 1 hr to bring the carbon content down to approximately 0.010 pct maximum. The bath then was exposed to air for 25 min to remove hydrogen. The electrodes were put in place, and the furnace was operated from this point on in an atmosphere of nitrogen. A synthetic slag was added to which additions of silicon and iron sulphide were made. MANY direct processes have been proposed for the treatment of oxidized ores of copper by reducing the copper oxide to the metallic state, and by separating it from its impurities by a subsequent fusion. The radical objection common to all the methods which have come to my notice, except those in which sulphur plays the prominent part, is that the very deoxidizing agent which effects the reduction of the copper oxide, inevitably reduces at the same time a very considerable part, if not the whole, of the iron which almost invariably accompanies copper in its ores. The result is that, when the ore is subsequently fused, a very great quantity of the already reduced iron separates from the slag along with the copper, alloying with it, and necessitating costly subsequent operations for its separation. Thus, at Perm, in the Urals,* the product of the fusion of ferruginous copper oxides is a mixture of one hundred and fifty-five parts of highly cupriferous pig iron with two hundred and five parts of very impure and ferruginous black copper, containing some 10 per cent. of carbon and iron, though free from sulphur, and of course very difficult to refine. If, in order to avoid this reduction of iron to the metallic state, the reducing action be made feebler, it inevitably results that a considerable part of the copper as well escapes deoxidation ; and, consequently, the slags are so rich that it becomes necessary to treat them subsequently in order to recover the copper which they contain. Thus, in treating native copper, at Lake Superior, where the reducing action is purposely made feeble in order to prevent the deoxidation of the iron, the slags from the first fusion of the ore carry so much copper as to render it imperative to treat them again, which is done in a cupola. And yet, in spite of so far weakening the reducing action as to cause a notable slagging of the copper, a very considerable reduction of iron actually takes place. These are the two dangers which threaten the smelter of oxidized copper ores. In this volume, which is divided into chapters on a commodity basis, many subjects inevitably have a common interest with others, or are interrelated in one way or another. No group of commodities is so outstanding in this regard as is that group of which the basic raw material is a carbonate rock. There are chapters in this book on dimension stone, on crushed stone, on chalk and whiting, on cement, on lime, on magnesite, on sodium carbonate; all of which are entirely, or partly, products of the "carbonate rocks." Rhodochrosite, witherite and strontianite are other carbonates described respectively in chapters on manganese minerals, barium minerals and strontium minerals; and travertine and cave onyx are carbonate materials used as ornamental stones. High grade marble is used for monuments and statues and as a decorative building stone. The aggregate tonnage of the basic raw material, the carbonate rock, is so enormous that it exceeds the tonnage of any metallic ore mined and quarried in the United States, and in turn is exceeded only by coal, sand and gravel, and by water in the gross tonnage produced by the mineral industry in this country. The specialties, including magnesite, sodium carbonate, and rhodochrosite, witherite and strontianite are produced from uncommon rock types of limited occurrence. They are described adequately in the chapters devoted to these subjects. This chapter is concerned with the limestones and dolomites. No other solid rocks are as important as these in the industrial life of the world, nor are any so widely known. Massive units of some carbonate formations form many of the spectacular features of some of the most rugged mountains in the world, such as the Dolomite Alps, the Canadian Rockies, some rugged peaks of the eastern flanks of the American Rockies in Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico and in many ranges in Utah, Nevada and Arizona. These continue down the Sierra Oriental in Mexico and on around the world to the flanks of the Himalayas, in the South China Highlands, and separating Asia and Europe in the flanks of the Ural Mountains where they form many reexhumed hills called Shikhany.50a Less rugged and more nearly flat-lying carbonate rocks underlie most of the area of our great Middle Western plain, the southern part of England and the northern part of Africa. These are the common rock formations known from boyhood to a large part of the world&apos;s population. The use of lime, produced by the burning of limestone, goes back to antiquity, and mortar was used widely in Biblical times. The cement made by mixing volcanic ash with lime was a basic material of construction when Pompeii was built. Our Eastern states are dotted with abandoned limestone quarries, and the ruins of old lime kilns which were operated in Colonial days. Many limestones and dolomites are found in flat-lying strata of a thickness convenient for quarrying as a building stone, so that houses and other structures have been built with them for centuries. In order to replace the muddy and rutted dirt roads with surfaces that could stand the hard usage of his wagons and carts, man learned to crush stone and put a layer of it on his old trails. Iron ores occur in such a wide variety of forms that nearly every kind of prospecting, geological knowledge, and geophysical technique has some application in the search for them. The type of orebody that is considered desirable depends on political and economic considerations, on transportation and markets, on the characteristics of the orebody, on the metallurgy of the ore, and on its comparison with other available ores. In North America, materials that can be efficiently processed into high grade concentrates and pellets are now the object of most exploration work. These are usually shallow, relatively unoxidized, metamorphosed iron formations that are particularly suitable for geophysical methods of exploration. Magnetic surveys are used for the direct discovery of new orebodies, for mapping stratigraphy and structure, and at times to locate oxidized zones in magnetic iron formation. Gravity mapping provides supplementary information, indicates gross tonnages, is useful in regional studies, and can discover non-magnetic orebodies. Electrical methods have not been fully exploited but self-potential, resistivity, applied potential, electromagnetic and perhaps induced polarization surveys all have restricted but highly useful applications. The use of all geophysical techniques promises to increase as the number of exposed easily discoverable orebodies decreases. A high consumption of steel, and consequently of iron ore is the chief characteristic of an industrial society and this consumption has been increasing at an average rate of about 35% every ten years for the past century. To supply this demand, iron ores and iron bearing materials in a wide variety of forms have been exploited on every inhabited continent and in nearly every country. Nearly every kind of prospecting, geological knowledge and geophysical technique has some application in the search for them. The type of orebody that is con-
