THE Mahoning Valley coal region lies on the extreme northern outcrop of the Ohio coal-field, and all the mines, with one exception, are opened on the lower coal of the series, No. 1 of the Ohio Geological Survey. The coal ranges from an inch to five, six, and sometimes seven feet thickness, the workable height being between two and a half and six feet. There are two varieties of coal, known in market as "Briar Hill coal " and " Mineral Ridge coal;" both varieties are drawn from the same seam. The Briar Hill coal is generally called block coal, and is the kind so largely used in a raw state in smelting iron. It pos¬sesses a laminated structure, easily splitting into horizontal sheets, but is very difficult to break in the opposite direction. The faces of the layers are often covered with a soft, dead, carbonaceous material, like charcoal, and the whole seam throughout is marked by alternate layers of dead and bright-looking coal. In the act of combustion the coal neither swells nor changes form, the masses retaining their shapes until they fall to ashes in the furnace. The Blueberry mine is about 10 miles west of Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan. The property consists of about 2000 acres in sees. 3, 4 and 5, T. 47, N.R. 28W. and secs. 32, 33 and 34, T. 48, N.R. 28W., and, excepting one intervening 80-acre tract, contains the iron formation for a length of about 21/4 miles. The property is traversed by State Highway M-28 and is served by three railways, the Chicago & Northwestern, the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic, and the Lake Superior & Ishpeming. The Northwestern transports the ore to a dock at Escanaba; the other railways, to Marquette. Ore for Chicago goes via Escanaba and that for Lower Lake ports, as Detroit, Cleveland, and Buffalo, via Marquette. History The presence of iron formation in this property has been known for many years, and mining operations on a small scale have been carried on intermittently. The Dexter mine, on the SE.1/4 of the NW.1/4 of sec. 3, was worked from 1883 to 1897 and 118,000 tons of ore was mined. From 1907 to 1915 extensive exploration was carried on over the whole of sec. 3, including 79 diamond-drill holes with a total footage of 26,000 ft. The Chase mine, on the NE.1/4 of the NE.1/4 of sec. 3, was developed from this exploration work, but after about 200,000 tons had been mined the property was abandoned. From 1908 to 1910 exploration was carried on by another company on sec. 4, 47-28, including four drill holes with a total footage of about 5000 ft. Much of the drilling on sec. 3 and of the exploration work on sec. 4 are within the present developed area of the Blueberry mine. A general campaign of diamond-drill exploration was undertaken in 1924, and within a year a considerable amount of ore was developed. The Ford Motor Co. then took an option on the property and carried on check drilling and diamond-drill work until the spring of 1926, when enough ore had been developed to warrant the sinking of a shaft

There were no important changes in the producing situation in Colombia in 1930, because the emergency bill passed by the Colombian Congress in 1927 is still in effect, and therefore no change has taken place in the law governing petroleum. At the close of 1930 the Colombian Congress began to consider a new petroleum bill. This measure is an improvement on the preceding bills which had been the subject of so much debate in the Congress. However, it cannot by any means be regarded as perfect, and a number of criticisms may be justly leveled at it. The most substantial one probably is that the royalties on public lands, and the taxes on private lands, while apparently low, are deliverable at seaboard, or payable based on seaboard price at the option of the government. If the government exercises its option to take the oil at the mouth of the well, the cost of the transportation figured back into oil is also deliverable to the government. This phase of the law has the effect of making seemingly low royalties a burden on the operator. The fact that taxes on private properties are deliverable in kind is also an unusual provision for which there is no good precedent. The pipe line provisions are also noteworthy, and the government has authority to fix rates and also to deny permits to construct pipe lines for reasons affecting national economy. There are also clauses enforcing unit operation on both public and private lands, and collecting a tax of 1 c. per 1000 ft. of gas wasted. It remains to be seen whether this bill will be enacted, or whether it will be substantially modified. This much may be said, however, that unless it is modified, it will defeat its own purpose; i. e., promotion of petroleum development in Colombia. Company Activities The South American Gulf Oil Co. shut down its operations during the year, and now employs only watchmen at its camps, Las Monas and El Tigre. The Oil Shale Corp. (TOSCO) is investigating the application of its oil shale retorting technology to coal processing in its 25-tpd retorting pilot plant. Low temperature char, with a high heating value, plus tar and gas have been produced from high moisture content, low heating value, subbituminous coal. The process, which has been named the TOSCOAL process, uses heated ceramic balls to provide the heat for retorting the coal. One ton of as-mined, subbituminous coal produces approximately 1/2 ton of char, 1/2 barrel of tar, and 1600 standard cubic feet (scf) of gas when the retorting is conducted at 970°F. Properties and yields of the products are presented and compared with Fischer assay yields.

THE magnetic powder method, long used for roughly mapping magnetic fields, has recently been refined 1,2 for investigating the microscopic variations in the surface magnetization of ferromagnetic crystals. Bitter' first discovered regular powder patterns connected with the crystal structure of such specimens. Several other investigators3 have used Bitter's original technique, with slight modifications, to study the variation of the patterns with variations in the magnetizing field applied parallel to the surface, and their dependence upon the state of strain, of polish and of crystal cut. All of the explanations of these patterns on metallic ferromagnetics have been couched in general terms. In a preliminary report we have described an improvement in the powder technique which led us to the discovery of a new effect throwing considerable light on the magnetic secondary structure of alpha iron4 and of nickel' single crystals. We now report additional evidence confirming the existence and stability of a magnetic block secondary structure. SPECIMENS The following list describes the specimens used in the present investigation. DESIGNATION DESCRIPTION A1 Silicon ferrite furnished to us by Dr. W. E. Published tables of jaw crusher capacities are compiled for the most part from field performance data, interspersed with interpolations, extrapolations, various safety factors, and other modifications. Such a table attempts to balance and equalize field data from widely Werent materials, with differences of crushability, efficiency of feeding, sizing of the feed, and so on. The tests described in this paper were undertaken with the objectives of checking previously reported capacities; of studying the effects of various factors upon the capacity, including jaw plate curvature; and, if possible, of deriving a general capacity equation. Such an equation has been derived from the data obtained in these tests. It is given together with factors for its use. While more accuracy than is usually required may be obtained by careful application of the equation, it is of simple form and provides a convenient reference plane upon which the potential capacity of various crushers may be compared, and with which operating adjustments may be made on existing installations. The principal deviation in these tests from the usual approach consists of a laboratory technique which has been developed for the production of selected capacity data. Recording instruments are connected to crushers in such a manner that a continuous record is produced which discloses the inherent maximum capacity of the crusher and shows capacity decreases caused by hangups. The capacity effects of various crushing conditions are made more evident by this arrangement. The recording instruments were first applied to a standard sized 10 by 7 in. Blake-type jaw crusher in the laboratory. Suficient tests were run on this with various combinations of setting, throw, speed, feed sizing, shapes of jaw plates, and other operating features, to establish the individual effect of each on the capacity. The instruments later were applied to much larger crushers in the field, through the excellent cooperation of the managements in the Mesabi Iron Range, and data were obtained which closely corroborated the established trends. The capacity equation resulting from the test work is made up of a series of factors, each representing the contributing effects of setting, speed, width of chamber, nip angle, feed density, type of jaw plates, stroke, and the overall operating technique. Fortunately, most of these factors were revealed to be in direct proportion to the capacity for straight plate chambers. This equation is also applicable to chambers using curved plates, with slight modifications resulting from the capacity limitation of the upper portion of the crushing chamber. The equation has been derived from tests covering a very wide range of feed density and hardness. It has been found valid, providing that the feed material is either nonpacking in character, as is usual, or allowance in designing the crushing chamber shape has been made to accommodate this characteristic. Preliminary investigation has shown that the equation is also applicable to single-toggle jaw crushers. Conditions of this are that the top of the flywheel rotate towards the top of the crusher opening, and that the horizontal motion of the swing jaw relative to the stationary jaw at the discharge opening be considered as the stroke. Several investigators1-8 have reported evidence of the existence of native or connate water in oil-and-gas-bearing strata. Both water and salt have been detected in cores of oil sands that yielded oil and gas exclusively when produced. Electrical logs often reveal unexpectedly low resistivity through oil and gas sands, indicating the presence of some material that is a considerably better conductor of current than oil and gas. Furthermore, calculationsg of the oil and gas content of reservoirs based upon production and reservoir-pressure decline data indicate appreciably lower values than are arrived at under the assumption that the pore space is occupied completely by oil and gas. Origin and Occurrence of Connate Water in Oil-and-gas-bearing Formations The view has been expressed, 10-15 and is generally agreed upon, that the expulsion of oil and gas material from source beds and the subsequent migration and accumulation occurred in the presence of salt water. As the strata that usually form reservoirs for oil and gas were laid down by, or in the presence of, ancient seas, the pore space within the strata must have been saturated with salt water before the entrance of the oil and/or gas. Thus, the accumulation of oil and/or gas in the upper regions of structures suitable for reservoirs must have required displacement of the connate water therefrom. In the absence of any forces other than gravitational, it would be expected that the displacement of the connate water out of the zones finally occupied by gas and oil would be complete, and that the vertical distribution of gas, oil, and water in a reservoir would be strictly in the order of their densities. Apparently, however, surface and interfacial forces that will not permit complete segregation of the fluids are active within the capillary spaces comprising a reservoir. The effects of these forces on both accumulation and production of oil and gas have been the subject of study by a number of investigators.16-37 In general, the view is held that the character of most materials that make up the reservoir rock leads to preferential wetting of the rock by

The process to be described, whatever other merits (or demerits) it may have possessed, certainly proved a financial success under the conditions of the locality where it was introduced and where a refining process had been sought previously in vain. I have ventured to bring it to the notice of the Institute in the hope that it may prove of some interest as a solution of a practical problem, such as is often presented to the metallurgist in the remote mining regions of the West. The method was used first at the Lyon Mill at Dayton, Nevada, and has been adopted at other tailings-mills on the Cornstock. These mills treat two classes of tailings: "sand," or; material which has passed previously through the pans of the ore-mills; and " slimes," or the fine clayey material which, coming from the battery, is too light to settle in the tanks inside of the mills but is

The engineering and metallurgical assessment of the McLaughlin Project ore body concluded that an open-pit mine and cyanide leach mill process would be feasible, producing both waste rock and residual mill tailings. As a part of the planning and permitting process, site selection studies were conducted for the tailings and waste rock disposal. The site selection process began with a regional identification of potential disposal sites and proceeded through 1) regional screening, 2) elimination of sites with obvious fatal flaws, 3) qualitative ranking of site evaluation criteria, 4) quantitative ranking of sites, 5) field investigation, 6) evaluations of field data, and 7) selection of preferred sites. Based on this approach of site rankings and field evaluations, tailings and waste rock disposal sites were selected and recommended for the preliminary design phase of the permitting and project development process. The site selection study provided the documentation necessary to justify the use of these sites for waste disposal and enabled Homestake Mining Co. to anticipate and integrate environmental concerns with agency requirements into the planning process.

At Bingham Canyon, the world's largest open-pit copper mine, annual grease consumption is in the neighborhood of 109 000 kg (240,000 lb), all of which was 544 (120-16) purchased, warehoused, and distributed in 54-kg (120-1b) and 180-kg (400-1b) drums. While perhaps a menial and mundane chore, grease distribution shows on the ledger as a significant expense item. To improve labor and cost performance, Kennecott maintenance engineers undertook a study to find the most direct method for moving multi purpose grease (MPG) from the refinery to the point of final consumption. What they found was a direct vendor system for hulk grease so simple and flexible that long-established drum distribution is being phased out in favor of the newer method throughout 75% of the operation.

The D-7 zone of the Ventura Avenue field is of special interest because the initial reservoir pressure at 92.00 ft nearly equaled the pressure exerted by the overburden. While the phenomenon has been observed elsewhere in the world, there is no record of a previous case in California. Such high pressures have been attributed to sealing of the reservoir, followed either by emergence of the beds or by compaction of the sediments in various ways. Oil in the D-7 zone is undersaturated. At pressures above the bubble point, oil is recovered by the slight expansibility of the reservoir framework and its liquid contents. More than 40 pct as much oil probably will be recovered by this mechanism as will be recovered by internal gas drive after pressures pass below the bubble point. Operations are handicapped by sand and pipe troubles. Introduction The Ventura Avenue field has been under development since 1915. It has long been considered a "high-pressure" field, but interest was heightened by the extreme conditions encountered in the recent development of the so-called D-7 zone. The original reservoir pressure in this pool is estimated to have been 8300 psi at a depth of 9000 ft below sea level, or 9200± ft below the surface. A fluid pressure approaching that exerted by the overlying sediments has been encountered in other parts of the world, but never before in California to the degree observed in the D-7 pool. With few exceptions, the original pressure in California fields is about equivalent to the static head of water below the water table in the outcrop. Structure The Ventura anticline is a prominent feature of the Ventura basin, being traceable on the surface about 17 miles.' The Ventura Avenue field is at the apex of the anticline. It is about one mile wide and five miles long, the major axis lying in an east-west direction. The productive limits cover an area of about 2300 acres. The entire anticline has been severely folded and faulted. The productive portions in particular are broken up by three major thrust faults having a general east-west strike. The resultant four fault blocks are termed the A, B, C, and D blocks, respectively. Certain electric-log intervals are assigned numbers. Fig I is a diagrammatic north-south section of the field near the crest, looking west, and shows three of the four fault blocks. To the west, the upper fault divides into two branches, which define the B block. Wells penetrating a fault may duplicate over 1000 ft of formation. However, the greater fault movement is the strike shift, which is believed to exceed 2500 ft both between the A and C blocks and between the C and D blocks. The location of water is irregular and unpredictable. A few intermediate waters exist, while some strata have more than 2000 ft of productive closure.

Most lead-zinc mines worldwide have moved to further mechanized techniques to boost productivity, improve safety, and lower costs. The mining session, chaired by S. C. Fall, NL. Industries, and C. J. Beattie, Callahan Mining Co., reviewed mining methods at five operations in the US, Australia, Peru, and Japan. Where massive sulfide-type and irregular ore bodies are encountered, resourceful operators have modified and varied the mining method with the localized ore zones. In all cases, mechanization of operations has registered gains in productivity.

A simple means of predicting the flowing well pressure history in a natural gas reservoir has been developed. The differential equation for unsteady radial flow of gases through porous media was solved by numerical methods using electronic punch card machines. The results obtained from these calculations are presented in a generalized form which is believed to be most convenient for engineering use. These results are compared with those presented in a paper by Bruce, et al4. An effective radius of drainage has been defined which permits the equation of steady state gas flow to be used easily to predict well pressures in gas reservoir depletion. An equivalent effective radius of drainage is defined for liquid flow systems and a comparison is made of the gas solution to the liquid solutions. INTRODUCTION This paper presents a numerical method for describing the transient flow of gases radially through a porous medium from which the production rate is specified. The results obtained from these calculations are presented in a generalized form which is believed to be the most convenient for engineering use. The principal application of these calculations should be to flow in natural gas reservoirs, in the interpretation of pressure drawdown tests, in the estimation of reserves, and in calculation of injection pressures required in gas injection and cycling operations. The evaluation of natural gas wells is based upon back-pressure tests in which measurements of production rate and flowing well pressure are made for periods of one, two, or more days. The flow is assumed to have stabilized at this time, and the observed values of pressure and production rate are used with standardized formulae to determine the well's allowable production rate. Furthermore, the results obtained from such a test of short time duration are extrapolated in such a manner to allow a prediction of what the well pressure will be at some future time for a specified (but possibly untested) flow rate. The manner of conducting such back-pressure tests suggests several questions as follows: 1. 'What is the definition of stabilized flow and what factors determine the length of time required for the flow to become stabilized? 2. How may the recorded values of pressure and rate be utilized? 3. As the well is produced and the reservoir pressure falls, how will the flowing well pressure change? Can this flowing well pressure be predicted from the back-pressure test? 4. Are the results obtainable from the test influenced by a particular procedure used in obtaining the results? 5. Is it possible to estimate the gross reservoir permeability from back-pressure data? It is not within the scope of this paper to provide solutions Or even to discuss adequately all the above questions. However. in considering such matters, the

HE procedure of directional freezing by the Bridgman technique1 is frequently used in crystal preparation. On those occasions where the crystal is regrown, it can be advantageous to Crop part of the ingot before regrowth to achieve purification. This note describes some simple, yet interesting, observations concerning the effects of cropping an ingot between successive freezes. First, it is not effective to Crop the front end of an ingot, whether or not the distribution coefficient, k , of the impurities is greater or less than unity. This can be shown as follows. The concentration C, of an impurity in a directionally frozen ingot of length d with a uniform cross section is given by where x is the distance along the ingot, and C0 is the initial concentration per unit length. It is assumed in deriving this equation that diffusion is negligible in the solid, is complete in the melt, and that k is constant. Consider that a section of the ingot Ad is removed from the front end. Then the average impurity concentration in the remaining (d- Ad) section of the ingot can be shown by integration to be given by When the ingot is remelted and refrozen, the new impurity distribution is given by where xl is the distance along the refrozen ingot. Substituting the value of c into Eq. [3], one finds This is identical to Eq. [11 when x = (x, Ad), which represents the original impurity distribution in the (d - Ad) section of the ingot after the first directional freeze. Therefore, the cropping and re-freezing accomplished nothing. This can also be seen physically by realizing that the average impurity content in the melt after the first Ad section is frozen, is identical to that after the resulting ingot has been cropped and remelted. Hence, it is assumed in the following sections that only the tail end of the ingot is cropped. However, it must be realized that for impurities with k greater than one, the pieces cropped from the tail end are purer, and are therefore saved. After cropping an amount Ad from the tail end of an ingot, the average impurity concentration of impurities in the remaining portion of the ingot is given by wheref= d/d. For the case of k < 1, the purification is defined as c,/c. It is obvious from Eq. [5] that the purification increases asf increases, but the increase in purification is not large. For example, iff is doubled from 0.1 to 0.2, the purification increases by only 10 pct for k = 0.5, by only 24 pct for k = 0.1, and by 32 pct for k =0.01. Much smaller values off than 0.1 are not desirable since insufficient purification is achieved. These figures indicate that much larger values off do not lead to substantial improvement, especially considering that much of the original ingot is lost. Therefore, it is generally useful to Crop about 1/10 of the ingot to achieve purification. As compared to doubling the value off, it is much more helpful to remelt, refreeze, and crop the ingot twice. Using Eq. [51 reiteratively, and assuming f= 0.1, it is found that the purification after this process is found to be increased over the purification after a single freeze and cropping by 33 pct for k= 0.5, 450 pct for k = 0.1, and 4100 pct for k = 0.01. THIS paper outlines the geophysical investigation of the area covering the Darrow salt dome, Louisiana. Surveys with the refraction seismograph and torsion balance failed to disclose the dome, but reflection dip shooting was successful and was confirmed by later drilling.
