THE Province of Ontario in recent years has come strongly to the front as a producer of metals, especially nickel, copper, silver, and now gold. Of the last named, the output for 1922 was in the neighborhood of $20,000,000. The law governing the mining industry in a community where such develop-ments are taking place will be of interest, therefore, in other places where mining laws are up for revision The first mining of importance done in this province was for copper on the north shore of Lake Huron, where the Bruce mines were opened in 1846. These deposits of copper sulfides, notwithstanding the remoteness from markets and the cost of transportation, were vigorously worked for 12 or 15 years and also intermittently later, but the active career of the mines came to an end in 1875. From first to last, a little less than 10,000 tons of copper was produced, valued at $3,300,000. All the product was shipped to England as dressed ore, contain-ing up to 13 per cent. of the metal. In. 1866, a rich pocket of gold was found on the Richardson farm near Madoc, Hastings County, but was not followed by further discoveries of a like kind and in time the excitement it caused died away. Rich silver ore was found in 1868 on Silver Islet in Lake Superior, a speck of land not larger than a good-sized ball-room. The assemblage of minerals here was practically the same as that at Cobalt, discovered 35 years later, namely, native silver, cobalt, nickel and arsenic; in addition, there was considerable argentite, which has always been scarce at Cobalt. In all, the silver produced amounted to about $3,500,000. The belief persisted that the deposit was not mined out, and in the summer of 1922, some rich ore was extracted from the roof, perilously near the bottom of Lake Superior.

The influence of deoxidation practice, prior thermal history, and aging time and temperature on the strain-aging behavior of low-carbon open-hearth steels was investigated. The criterion of aging employed was the increase in yield strength in the tensile test, after straining and aging. Composition, prior heat treatment, and aging conditions were all found to be important in governing the strain-aging characteristics of these steels. THAT deoxidation changes the strain-aging propensities of low-carbon steels has been known for a long time, but there has been little agreement, and even contradiction, between results obtained by different investigators and between results obtained in the laboratory and in the mill. This investigation was begun in the hope that some of the uncertainties connected with the strain aging of commercial steels could be eliminated. In considering this problem, it was necessary to define strain aging and to examine the methods used to measure this property. Strain aging can be defined as the changes in properties of a metal or alloy with time, after cold working. The rate at which these changes occur increases as the temperature is raised above atmospheric. The requisite plastic strain is the principal distinction between strain aging and quench aging, the latter being due to precipitation from supersaturated solid solution. Strain aging is also characterized by rapid attainment of maximum hardness at high aging temperatures and lack of softening (overaging) at low aging temperatures. Several possible criteria of strain aging have been listed by Sachsl and by Davenport and Bain.' Because changes in mechanical properties are the most easily measured and the most commonly used, consideration of methods to be used in this investigation was confined to three tests: tensile, notch-impact, and hardness. Hardness tests are the most economical and easiest to perform, but produce only one measure of strain aging. Also, as pointed out by Felmly, Hartbower, and Pellini,³ hardness changes due to aging are not pronounced for steels containing more than 0.15 pct C. Notch-impact tests require careful preparation of large numbers of specimens. Above and below the transition temperature the test lacks sensitivity; furthermore, it is extremely difficult to impart a uniform strain to the specimens, followed quickly by aging and final testing; machining must generally take place after straining. For these reasons, the tensile test was selected for use. Although this test requires a considerable expenditure of time, labor, and money in preparation of the specimens and performance of the test, more information can be gained than from any other single mechanical test, information which includes upper and lower yield points, yield-point elongation, tensile strength, strain-hardening exponent, reduction of area, and elongation. Low and Gensamer' and Schwartzbart and Low5 lso used the tensile test, taking the increase in flow stress after straining in tension and aging as a measure of strain aging. DENSITY data are reported on 16 saturated hydrocarbon vapors at pressures ranging from 1000 to 8220 lb. per sq. in. and at temperatures ranging from 35° to 250°F. These data have been used to extend the compressibility-factor chart for natural gases up to 10,000 lb. per sq. in. The relatively large quantity of high-boiling constituents present in high-pressure vapors in equilibrium with crude oils makes it necessary to include in the analysis of the gas the molecular weight, density, and possibly boiling range of the heptanes and heavier fraction. Relationships have been presented by which the density of gases may be obtained directly from the temperature, pressure, and gas gravity provided the gases have a common source or are similar in composition. INTRODUCTION The densities of natural gases are necessary in many engineering computations in petroleum production and utilization. Gas reserves, changes in reservoir pressure, gradients in gas wells, metering of gases, pipeline flow, and compression of gases are typical problems requiring the density of the gas. A decade ago, engineering computations used ideal gas laws with deviations up to 500 lb. per sq. in.4 Recent discoveries of pools having pressures up to 7500 lb. per sq. in., and installation of pressure-maintenance and recycling plants, have increased the need for data on gas density at high pressures. METHODS OF COMPUTATION The accepted method of computing the density or specific volume of natural gases is the use of the ideal gas law corrected by a compressibility factor. The method proposed by Kay7 of correlating compressibility factors for gaseous mixtures on pseudocritical properties5 appears to be satisfactory for natural gases.2 The methane-compressibility factor has been shown to deviate systematically from the behavior of natural gases2 and a chart giving these corrected factors is available. A method of computing specific volume of gaseous mixtures from partial molal volumes has been reported by Sage and Lacey.8 Complete data for the computation are not yet available for all hydrocarbon gases. Most of the reported data on gas densities have been in the single-phase region removed from the dew point or saturation condition. Since most gases in the reservoir or while on contact with liquid during flow are saturated, the determination of densities under conditions of saturation is particularly important. Although there is no reason to believe that the saturated gases differ in behavior from those considerably removed from their dew points, the usual experimental determinations find difficulty on approaching the dew-point conditions. This paper reports the density of 16 saturated gases in equilibrium with crude oils. The relationships developed to compute the density of gases to high pressure' have been modified and enlarged. A simplified method of obtaining gas density is presented in the form of charts, which apply for specific groups of gases.

The study of earthquakes long ago developed the fact that by study-ing the travel .times of the various groups of waves from the same earthquake, as received on seismographs :it varying distances, major discont'inuities in the earth's crust, could be reasonably well defined. Using this original discovery, and adapting the mathematical methods originally devised in seismology for determining the depth below the surface at which such discontinuities occur, other investigators were able to develop a new branch of seismology which promises to be extremely useful in extending the boundaries of our information on local conditions Below the earth's surface. As an outstanding example of the applications of this work, we have the so-called " seismograph " exploration of the Gulf Coastal region, which has resulted in the discovery of a large number of salt domes, from many of which oil fields may be developed. The original seismological investigations, from which different major discontinuities in the earth's crust were deduced, as well as these later successful experiments in locating salt-dome structures, involve relatively simple problems. In each case we arc dealing with surface materials in which elastic waves will be propagated with a fairly definite velocity. Under this material we have something quite different', in which the elastic waves will be propagated with a much higher velocity. The transition from one medium to the other is likewise relativtly abrupt. For example, in the Gulf Coastal region the sedimentary formations have a velocity of 6000 or 7000 ft. per sec., while the velocity of elastic waves in the cap rock of a salt dome may exceed 15,000 ft. per sec. Under such conditions, delineation of the formation is a relatively simple matter, and, furthermore, there is very little opportunity for ambiguous results. A blotter-type electrolytic model was utilized to prepare flow diagrams for a field test of the in-situ combustion process. It is pointed out that the areal sweep of a combustion pattern is similar to sweep patterns that would be developed at an infinite mobility ratio, which exists (approximately) across a combustion front because of the complete removal of liquids from the sand behind it. The precision of the blotter method was tested by comparison with results obtained by other techniques and was found to be satisfactory. The blotter-type model will not furnish as much information as more elaborate and expensive potentiometric models, but its speed of operation and ease of construction make it a highly satisfactory tool to determine areal sweep patterns. A tabulation of sweep efficiency and mobility ratio is furnished for various well geometries. INTRODUCTION In connection with the first field experiment with the in-situ combustion method of oil recovery," flow diagrams for the unique well geometry and boundary conditions involved in the subject test were developed. From these diagrams, information concerning the areal sweep and distribution of flow was obtained. A survev of the literature on potentiometric models, utilized to solve two-dimensional flow problems,1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9,10 indicated that the information desired could be obtained by means of a blotter-type model by making certain modifications in the technique. The following discussion describes the application of the modified blotter-type electrolytic model to the solution of the problem of the flow of gases in an oil reservoir for an engineering appraisal of the progress of the combustion front during the first field experiment. Considerable information has been published on the theoretical aspects of electrical model techniques. One author stated that:' "The models are based on the observation that since the velocity of an ion in an electrolytic system is proportional to the potential gradient, just as the velocity of a fluid particle in a porous medium is proportional to the pressure gradient, the paths of the ions in the electrolytic systems must be similar to those of the fluid particles in a porous medium with the same geometry and equivalent boundary conditions." This suggestion of a real analogy has been established repeatedly by comparisons of analytic derivations with model results. The analogy between the movement of a combustion front and the model results is not as apparent, since the combustion process differs from water flooding and gas cycling in that the velocity of the burning front is different from the velocity of the injected fluid at the front in combustion. Analogy between electric current flow and movement of the burning front exists because the local velocity of the burning front is proportional to the air (mass) velocity at this point (assuming frontal temperatures are at least as high as the ignition temperature of the fuel). Most model studies fall into one of two categories: (1) electron conduction, or (2) ionic conduction models. Examples of these are models which employ as flow media either a thin metal sheet, or a porous blotter saturated with an electrolyte, respectively. Of the two, the porous blotter model, an ionic conduction model, appears to be the most adaptable to the flow problem that results when using in-situ combustion. This problem requires that the mobility of the particles in the model be controlled analogous to the mobility of gas flowing through burned sand of high permeability to gas and then through oil sand of lower permeability to gas. A priest at Shenandoah, Pa., one day persuaded the president of the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co. to slush breaker waste and culm into old mine workings in order to save his church from being destroyed by surface subsidence. The year was 1864, the project was successful, and history recorded the first use of hydraulic backfilling. Shortly afterward, the method was applied to several eastern coal mines for area fill to control subsidence. In 1884, hydraulic backfilling was used to control a mine fire in the Schuylkill region of Pennsylvania. The idea was taken to Europe by German engineers and developed successfully at the Myslovitz colliery in Upper Silesia in 1901. From there it was applied to several mines throughout Europe.

An investigation of trends in exploration expenditures for a selected group of mining companies was undertaken for the interval 1968-1971. These trends were compared with financial factors that are associated with various groups of companies and the implications of these trends are indicated. The sample consists of 21 mining companies, of these, 19 are listed on the New York Stock Exchange and 2 are listed on the American Exchange. Twenty are American, one is Canadian. All are fundamentally "mining companies" in that they derive the bulk of their income from the ex- traction, sale, and at times, fabrication of metals from their own mines. This is in contrast to companies which have mineral exploration departments but derive the bulk of their revenues from sources other than mining, such as oil and gas sales. No companies which can be considered strictly as exploration companies are included in the sample. This definition held up in 1968, however, its strict application became more difficult through the years. In 1971, three or four of the companies were changing their character in that they were phasing out of the mining business and deriving a substantial part of their income from activities other than mining.

Coal treatment by oil spraying receives special attention at the Georgetown plant for the dividends it pays in satisfying present customers and attracting new markets. Customer satisfaction requires care, quality control, and use of suitable oils. REPRESENTED here are the ideas and varied experiences of many people in the Hanna Coal CO. who have helped develop, over a number of years, an efficient and flexible method for spraying controlled amounts of oil on coal. Since the Georgetown preparation plant began operations early in 1951, oil treatment of coal has received special attention. It is believed that oil treating will satisfy present customers and also attract new markets. The first step in developing the new method of oil spraying was the construction of a dust cabinet for testing 50-lb samples of treated coal with the available oil sprays on the market. Tests results were tabulated for both indoor and outdoor storage. The graph, Fig. 1, shows results of the original tests made with a 700-sec residual blend and a 500-sec lubricating oil on Georgetown stoker coal of 1¼x3/8-in. size.* The advantages of better price, improperly blended can raise havoc. Some.,pale oils also, although odorless when delivered, give off a sweet sickening odor when atomized under pressure. It is recommended that all products be tested before they are used. There is a specific place for all spraying oils. For example, at a power plant a severe dust condition exists around the stockpile area and in parts of the plant. The cheapest spraying oil made, regardless of odor, will do an excellent job in this case and will save the company 3 to 5c per gal or more. Domestic trade, on the other hand, must be carefully handled to prevent complaints about odor, and the only way to do this is to stay with the proved products after the odor tests have been made. The preparation plant at Georgetown has facilities to handle either tank car or tank truck deliveries. Steam is available at the unloading point if the weather is severe, and there is an indicator at the unloading point to prevent overflowing the 20,000-gal underground storage tank. Systematic test samples are removed from each delivery and sent to the lubrication engineer to insure quality control. Fig. 3 illustrates the chutes in which smaller sizes of coal are treated. Fig. 4 shows the entire spraying system. Buried in the ground is a 20,000-gal tank with immersion heaters grouped around the feeder line to insure adequate gravity flow to the pump under all conditions of weather. Oil flows to a 500-gal preheating tank where the temperature is kept about 150°F by six 1½-kw immersion heaters thermostatically controlled. Hot oil is fed through a self-cleaning disc-type filter to the hydraulic pump. Valves and piping make it possible to transfer oil from one tank to another or to drain the lines for maintenance purposes. All this equipment is below ground level in a covered pump room,

THE data in this paper were collected to show both the volume and speed with which bituminous mines have indefinitely suspended operation while economic advantage in the industry has so gravely declined. The study was limited to the bituminous coal-mining states east of the Mississippi River, wherein conditions affecting production and demand are more common respectively to all of the mining districts included and represent about 95 per cent of the nation's coal mining. Data for the compilation of these statistics and for the construction of these graphs have been obtained in all cases from state mine depart-ment reports, except from those of Ohio and Virginia. In Virginia essential individual mine data were secured from an authentic source, but no individual Ohio mine information is obtainable, because all Ohio fact-gathering agencies are prohibited by law from revealing such data. In other states the facts were tabulated and later checked with the cooperation of Chief Mine Inspectors. In all, excluding Ohio, over 17,000 individual annual mine returns were examined. Special infor-mation was secured from each state mine department about suspensions in 1932. Accurate information was not available from all states about mine abandonment due to exhaustion of coal reserves, and while these were completed for several states, it has not been shown because it was not perfected for all states. However, the total observed sample was comprehensive enough to show that exhaustion accounts for a very limited part of the suspended production. Wherever mention is made of "suspended production" the largest annual output of the mine in the five years prior to suspension has been taken as the measure of its probable production had it continued to operate. A mine is not regarded in this category, as having suspended, when it merely ceases to produce. The word "suspension" is used only where there is a complete abandonment of activity for an indefinite period, as evidenced by the fact that both ventilation and pumping are discontinued.

In my former paper (Bans., xii., 410) I quoted the ruling of Judge Hallett, of Colorado, in the "Iron-Smuggler" case, tried before him in June, 1882. Under his charge, the jury in that case found for the defendants, practically declaring that the deposit on the outcrop of which the Iron Silver Mining Company's claim was located was not a " lode," or else that the portion of it within that claim was not the apex. The case was appealed, and the decision of the Supreme Court, given in February, 1886, is reported in 116 U. S. Reports, p. 529. It simply declares that there is nothing in the charge of Judge Hallett to warrant the setting aside the verdict. The definition of a legal lode given in that case, and quoted in my paper at the page above-named, is perhaps the best of several which Judge Hallet has pronounced. That is to say, his earlier definition, that " a lode or vein is a body of mineral, or mineral-bearing rock, within defined boundaries in the general mass of the mountain," is here accompanied with further explanations, which relieve it from the requirement on one hand, that the body shall be continuously ore-bearing if it he only well-defined, and, on the other hand, that the boundaries shall be well-defined if the ore-bearing body be proved to exist. So far as this particular case is concerned, the approval of this ruling by the Supreme Court merely prevents any re-hearing as to the face. I. INTRODUCTION THE geology of the Tintic mining district, fully treated, would occupy an elaborate monograph. This less comprehensive paper is devoted primarily to the occurrence and origin of the orebodies of the district, while space is given to those phases of the general geology only which seem necessary to a proper setting of such a discussion. The first geological report on the Tintic district to be issued was that by Tower and Smith, published in 1899, in the form of a paper in Part III of the Nineteenth Annual Report of the U. S. Geological Survey, and also as Folio No. 65, Geologic Atlas of the United States. About four years ago a second investigation was begun by Waldemar Lindgren and G. F. Loughlin, of the U. S. Geological Survey. With the exception of a paper on the oxidized zinc ores of the Tintic district by Mr. Loughlin, the results of their work are still unpublished. The writer's acquaintance with the district began in the fall, of 1913, and has extended over a period of about two years.

"Who is the man who views the mines and promptly turns them down? Who is the one that thinks this is the short cut to renown? Who is it gives the bum advice to the innocent financier? The knowledge-feigning, theory- straining mining engineer." -Anonymous INTRODUCTION Taxes levied against mining properties and operations are a critical cost in the economic evaluation of mining investments. Indeed, taxes represent a substantial cost of doing business in the minerals industry and often have a significant impact on corporate investment decisions. A good example was the postponement of mineral development in the state of Wisconsin, primarily because of what was perceived to be excessive taxes imposed by that state. In many respects mining investments are no different from other industrial investments. Astute taxing authorities should recognize that geologic endowment is a necessary but clearly not a sufficient condition for mineral investments. The fact that a mineral deposit exists does not necessarily mean that it will ultimately be developed-a point that many taxing authorities fail to recognize. While it is true that ore deposits are not mobile in the sense that they cannot be physically moved to a district having more favorable taxes, corporate investment capital certainly is mobile and flows to ventures which maximize wealth to the firm. In short, higher taxes reduce project yields and tend to drive investment capital elsewhere. The appropriate type and level of taxation imposed upon the mining industry continues to be a very controversial and emotion-charged topic. Mining activities have been taxed at various levels over the years due to widely differing taxation philosophies. Location has also influenced taxation policies, as evidenced by the diversity of tax laws and assessment procedures applied to mineral deposits by the various states. Indeed, mineral taxation varies from state to state, from county to county, and from one mineral commodity to another. Whether or not a given tax is appropriate for a specific mineral deposit, or even an industry, is a difficult problem to assess. First, the type or kind of tax which should be imposed must be considered. Second, it is most important to define a fair and unambiguous base against which to levy the tax. Finally, one must consider the tax rate to be applied to this base. It is the combination of these two components

During the heat-treatment of silver specimens for tensile tests it was observed that the bars blistered and became brittle when heated in a hydrogen atmosphere. To check this unexpected result, a wide variety of commercial silvers were heated in hydrogen at 850°C. Only a few of the materials developed blisters, the most severe of which is the tube pictured in Fig. I. The microstructure of a cross section of the tube is shown in Fig. 2. The embrit-tlernent is extremely severe at the edge; the blisters result from the severe deformation of the surface material by large under- lying gas pockets. The effects resulting from hydrogen embrittlement of silver have been observed by numerous investigators over a long time l,2,3 although it was only recently that a clear explanation was offered.4 However, the damage resulting from hydrogen embrittlement has not been generally recognized; and it is of advantage to know more about this phe- 1 References are at the end of the paper.

A core sample porosity-check program is described. A number of laboratories participated in the investigation. which comprised measuring the porosities of ten selected natural and synthetic core samples. Each laboratory employed its own method (or methods) of measurement. These included Boyle's Law, water-saturation. and organic liquid-saturation methods. Brief descriptions of each method employed are given. In general, the measured values of porosity were in reasonably good agreement. The average deviation of porosity from the mean or average values for the group of samples was ±0.5 porosity per cent. The results of these measurements are compiled and presented in graphical form. INTRODUCTION The total hulk volume of a porous sample is derived from the sum of two volumes, the void or pore volume and the solid* or grain volume. The porosity fraction of the sample ia defined as the ratio of the void volume to the bulk volume. Multiplication of this ratio by 100 converts it to per cent porosity. Distinction is made here between total porosity and effective porosity. The former includes all void space, both interconnected and isolated, while the latter includes only those voids which are interconnected. This investigation deals only with the effective porosity.* Numerous cases had been noticed in which there appeared to be appreciable discrepancies in the results of porosity determinations on core samples. Differences of as much as 10 to 15 porosity per cent had been reported from different sources

THE first report of the deposition of single-crystal silicon on sapphire (single-crystal aluminum oxide) was made at the American Physical Society Meeting in Canada' by one of us and was subsequently published in the Journal of Applied physics.* This paper summarizes some of the work carried on in this area since that time, in addition to reviewing some of our earlier observations. The initial single-crystal deposits of silicon on sapphire reported were obtained on sapphire planes produced by cutting a sapphire rod perpendicular to its fastest growth direction, which is approximately 60 deg from the C axis. Direct correlations between the microstructure and X-ray data as to the single crystallinity as shown in Fig. 1 are evident. These deposits were identified as (111) silicon on the substrate oriented near the (1123) of sapphire. (Sapphire notations are designated according to the c over a ratio of 2.73.) It became evident that substrate quality and surface play an important part in successful epitaxy. For example, in Fig. 2 we observe an interesting

"IRON for iron" may soon be the primary concept of Mexico's mining industry. If reports that President Adolfo Ruiz Cortines intends to extend federal control over mining are true, Mexico will export iron ore to the U. S. only in return for machinery. Actual exporter will be the Federal Government, with negotiations through the Bank of Mexico. Shipments of iron ore, under this kind of arrangement, can be tightly controlled, assuring that machinery and heavy equipment instead of dollars are the means of payment. Expansion of this policy in the next few years can be expected according to reports.
