Geostatistics originated as an application of a classical statistical concept, multivariate linear regression, to the solution of a practical problem, estimation of reserves in the South African gold mines. In this respect, geostatistics should only be considered as one statistical method among many that can be used to evaluate mineral deposits. R.F. Shurtz has studied possible applications of power spectrum analysis to the same problem, and these studies may result in future improvements over the presently accepted geostatistical methodology. The intention of R.F. Shurtz's paper, as stated by the author, is to "relate geostatistical doctrine to classical statistical and mathematical concepts." However, in this comparison the "geostatistical doctrine" appears to include only the simplest among the geostatistical concepts advocated by G. Matheron, while "classical statistical and mathematical concepts" are limited nearly exclusively to power spectrum analysis. The author attempts to compare the two methods, and to prove the theoretical superiority of power spectrum analysis. Unfortunately, a number of errors and incorrect statements are made concerning both the theory and application of geostatistics, which invalidate the comparison and the conclusions drawn from it. The errors made in this comparison are understandable since few scientists can claim to have expertise in two theories as diverse as those compared here. In many respects, this paper is reminiscent of polemics which occurred 15 to 20 years ago when geostatistics and trend surface analysis were compared. Each method has its own merit and limitations, and none can claim absolute superiority. The most misleading statements found in R.F. Shurtz's paper are: The definition of the semivariogram given on page 1923 is incorrect. If the maximum difference between two assays is 1, the maximum value of the semivariogram is not 1, as stated, but 0.5. The comparison of geostatistics and linear regression made in the section entitled "Insufficiency of Classical Statistics?" is not valid. The semivariogram of the sample values given in Table 1 (page 1919) has a parabolic shape indicative of a linear drift. When such a semivariogram is observed, the simplest method of geostatistical estimation (linear kriging with unknown mean) is not applicable. Universal kriging must be used that takes trends into account. On page 1921 it is stated that the use of trends "is officially disparaged in geostatistics." Again on page 1924 mention is made to "Matheron's commitment to random process (intrinsic) models and his present categorical rejection of deterministic (trend) models for mineral deposit evaluation." Indeed, from articles published by geostatisticians in the 1960s one could infer that geostatistical methods are not compatible with the presence of trends. However, even the simplest

IN spite of the large amount of work which has been carried out on the recrystallization of aluminum and its alloys, there has been no complete investigation of the recrystallization characteristics of A1-Mg alloys. The most complete investigation is that reported by Bungardt and Osswald' who, working with commercial-purity materials, found that the temperature both of beginning and of complete recrystallization increased with magnesium content up to about 2 pct Mg, then decreased with a further increase in magnesium up to 5.0 pct, and thereafter increased again. Michaud and Segolz working with 99.93 pct A1 also found the temperature of beginning of recrystallization to decrease as the magnesium content increased from 2.13 pct to about 4.5 pct. Chossat3 using aluminum of 99.99 pct purity found that 0.12 pct Mg had no effect but that 0.4 pct Mg increased the recrystallization temperature by about 30°C. That no effect was found for 0.12 pct Mg does not agree with the later results reported by Demer and Beck4 who found that 0.025 pct Mg in 99.99 pct A1 increased the time for complete recrystallization and furthermore increased the activation energy for the recrystallization process. Kratz" using 99.997 pct A1 found that 0.5 pct Mg increased both the temperature of beginning and of complete recrystallization by 100°C. Chadwick and Hooper" working with commercial-purity material found that 1 pct Mg increased the temperature of complete recrystallization by about 40 °C for cold reductions in the range 17 to 72 pct. With smaller amounts of cold work produced by stretching (10 pct strain), they found no significant effect of magnesium. The latter result agrees with that obtained by Williams and Eborall' who found no effect of 2 pct Mg on the recrystallization temperature of commercial-purity aluminum strained 10 pct or less by stretching. Experimental Procedure Material Used: The chemical analyses of the materials used throughout this investigation are given in Table I. Fabrication: The alloys were cast in iron molds which had been washed thoroughly with alumina. After scalping, the ingots were annealed for 16 hr at 450°C, pressed, annealed at 450°C for 16 hr and hot rolled to 0.25 in. After hot rolling, the slabs were alternately annealed and cold rolled to 0.036 in. Cold-rolling reductions between intermediate anneals were kept at about 30 pct and a high intermediate annealing temperature of 450°C was used so as to obtain, as nearly as possible, similar starting grain sizes for the different materials. All intermediate anneals were done in a salt bath and were followed by cold-water quenching so as to retain all the magnesium in solid solution. The final cold reductions investigated were 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 80 pct. The initial grain sizes, that is, the grain size before the final cold reduction, were all very similar. Annealing Procedure: Specimens, 1 in. sq, were cut from the 0.036 in. sheet and annealed in a salt bath, the temperature of which was controlled to k2"C. Separate specimens were annealed for different times at 350°, 375", 400°, and in one or two cases at 415°C and after annealing were quenched in cold water. The time taken for a specimen to reach temperature was approximately 5 sec. Metal-lographic examination after annealing showed that no precipitation of Mg+413 occurred during cooling. Procedures Used for Determining Recrystallization Characteristics: All specimens were electrolyti-cally polished and etched by the method described previously1° and polishing was continued until about 0.002 in. had been removed from each side of the specimen. IT is a distinct privilege to participate in this meeting convened to honor the memory of Henry Marion Howe, a distinguished scientist and metallurgist. Many have added to our rapidly growing fund of metallurgical knowledge but few have made the unique contribution of formulating basic concepts essential to an over-all comprehensive view of the subject of metallography. Of those previously selected to deliver this lecture, several have added a personal touch to their discourse because they were able to refer to their associations with Dr. Howe. It was not my good fortune to know him or to enjoy his inspiring influence. Like most of you, my contact has been with his published works, which are outstanding in that they provide lucid, detailed expositions of the nature and behavior of metals and alloys. His deep understanding and clarity of expression have greatly accelerated our progress in metallography and in the use of metals. The degree to which a man's thinking, experimentation and writing contribute toward an understanding of basic laws and phenomena determines whether his life's work is of transitory or permanent value. This occasion appropriately recognizes the fundamental importance of Dr. Howe's pioneer work in the field of metallurgy. On two former occasions, gray iron was selected as a subject for discussion. The fact that the production of pig iron has not been discussed before does not reflect any lack of interest on the part of Dr. Howe or former lecturers in the process that under- lies the production of steel. Although Dr. Howe's work in his later years centered around metallography, his earlier publications show a considerable interest in the production of iron and steel. He recognized that in the ascending spiral of metallurgical advancement we are not winding a single thread but are weaving a complex fabric. Specific evidence of his interest in the production of pig iron may be found in his book1 on The Metallography of Cast Iron and Steel. In explaining why blast furnaces have been in constant use for about 600 years, he says: "The process is economical because it utilizes with extraordinary completeness the calorific power of the coke due to the thorough transfer of heat from the gaseous products of combustion to the charge." This emphasis on heat transfer, overlooked in many more extended and more recent discussions of the blast-furnace process, illustrates Professor Howe's ability to see the essentials. Other distinct advantages of the blast furnace, such as the removal of much of the sulphur and practically all of the oxygen, were mentioned. It was also stated that although the blast- furnace process is complex in nature, its outward form is comparatively simple, thus permitting large-scale production at small labor costs. The effect of rolling reduction on the textures of Cu-A1 alloys has been investigated both by pole figure and by modulus methods. In alloys which exhibit complete copper or brass types of rolling texture, the rolling reduction has little effect on the texture except to increase the degree of preferred orientation. In alloys which exhibit a transition texture, however, increased rolling reduction increases the amount of brass-type texture at the expense of the copper-type texture. The present experimental results show that there is no one-to-one correspondence between the SFE and the rolling texture of fcc metals. Additional data taken from the literature for fcc metals also support this conclusion. On the other hand, the present and previous experimental results are shown to be in good agreement with the suggestion that the texture transition occurs at a critical value for the separation distance between two partial dislocations—a consequence of the "dislocation interaction" hypothesis for texture. formation. This critical separation occurs when the parameter .r/ub is 3.75 x 10'3. From this, a value for the SFE of 39 ergs per sq cm may be deduced for a Cu-2.85 at. pct A1 alloy. ThE correlation between the rolling texture of fcc metals and the stacking fault energy, SFE, was one of the first attempts to relate atomistic properties with the type of rolling texture.' This correlation gives a qualitative explanation for the experimental observation that the addition of alloying elements, which generally lower the SFE, changes the copper-type texture to a brass-type texture. The simplicity of this correlation had led to its general acceptance and even its quantitative use.' However, it is only a correlation and is largely based on descriptive features of pole figures, and on the poorly known SFE values in dilute alloys. Quantitative verification of this phenomenologi-cal correlation is, in fact, completely lacking. One purpose of the present study is to test this correlation. Another atomistic description for the formation of rolling texture is the "dislocation interaction" hypothesis of texture formation.3 In this hypothesis, the factor controlling the type of rolling texture depends on whether or not the separation distance between two partial dislocations exceeds a critical value. Materials having a separation of less than the critical value are supposed to exhibit a copper-type texture while those with a separation above the critical value are supposed to have a brass-type texture. At the critical value, it is expected that the material should show equal amounts of copper- arid brass-type orientations in their textures, i.e., a 50 pct transition texture. The SFE appears in this hypothesis as only one of several factors which determine the separation distance between partial dislocations. It is possible to test the validity of these two concepts by studying the rolling texture as a function of rolling reduction. Since the SFE per se is an intrinsic property of the metal, it should not, by definition, be influenced by local irregularities, such as variable stress conditions. Thus, no change in texture-type is expected to occur with changes in rolling reduction. On the other hand, according to the "dislocation interaction" hypothesis, any factor that effectively influences the separation distance of partial dislocations would be expected to change the rolling texture. Since the separation distance between partial dislocations is known to depend upon local stresses,4-6 it is anticipated that there would be an effect of the degree of reduction on the texture-type. Also, since applied stresses are more likely to increase, rather than to decrease, the separation between partials,4'5 the overall effect would be to increase the amount of material in the brass-type orientations as rolling reduction is increased. Furthermore, this reduction dependence would be most prominent in alloys exhibiting the transition texture since the distance between partials in those alloys is thought to be close to the critical value. Experimental data in the literature is insufficient to distinguish between these two alternatives. Haessner studied the effect of rolling reduction on textures in a series of Ni-Co alloys by means of the X-ray intensity-ratio technique,' and found that while one texture parameter indicated no reduction dependence the other indicated a slight dependence of the rolling texture on reduction in the range of 96 to 99 pct. As has been noticed previously, the intensity-ratio technique is a convenient but controversial method7 because there is no a priori reason to suggest which intensity-ratio would describe the texture most meaningfully. A more quantitative method of describing textures is found in terms of the orientation dependence of Young's modulus. Here, the type of modulus aniso-tropy associated with the copper-type texture is sufficiently different from that observed for the brass-type texture to allow the two types to be easily distinguishable and a quantitative measure of the amount of each can be deduced from the numerical results. This ability to provide quantitative data is particularly valuable when the two textures occur simultaneously in one alloy as is the case for the transition textures. In this paper the modulus method, supplemented by pole figure data, is used to look for an effect of roll: ing reduction the texture. Also by combining the texture measurements with recent determinations of the SFE in Cu-A1 alloys'0'" it should be possible to test for a relationship between the SFE and textures.

This district commences near Pigeon River, the northeastern boundary between Minnesota and Province of Ontario, and extends entirely around the north shore of Lake Superior, terminating for the present at the Bruce Mines on Lake Huron. The discoveries of mineral-bearing veins have been confined for the most part to the lake shore, or to the country opened up by the Dawson Red River road. As yet the country back from the lake has been but little explored, on account of its roughness, being intersected by steep, rocky trap bluffs, 1000 or more feet high, and alternating white cedar and tamarack swamps. The forests are exceedingly difficult for prospectors. In many places Titanic piles of rocks, protected by chevaux-de-frise of dead cedars, with their hooked, tough, sharp branches, and a covering of spongy moss, sometimes several feet thick, successively guard against the discovery of hidden treasure. The Hudson's Bay Company for nearly a century have maintained trading-posts at Fort William and other points, which probably opened the way to the first discoveries that were made at Prince's Bay, near the western limit of the district. At this point a large vein was worked by Colonel Prince, the owner, as early as 1846. The richest part of the vein seems to have been on Spar Island, but work was stopped on account of excess of water. Sir William Logan states that a mass of ore weighing several hundred pounds and carrying 3 per cent. of silver was taken out. On the mainland small quantities of native and sulphide of silver were found, together with iron and copper pyrites, zinc blende, and galena, in a large spar vein. A detailed breakdown of mining costs, available to management on monthly and year-to-date bases, is mandatory for a controlled and efficient mining operation. A simple lump sum reporting of costs may indicate a profit or loss differential, but it does not allow an effective search for areas of possible cost reduction. Moreover, functional reporting is necessary on a timely basis so as to note trends of increasing costs In specific areas, which in turn allow possible preventive action by management. Definitive cost information helps to eliminate the tendency to overlook areas where cost Improvements can be made. A good cost control system points out salient operational weaknesses by: ( 1 ) allowing comparison of functional costs with similar costs of other mines and (2) pinpointing sudden increases over unit empirical costs within the organization. In general, the cost accounting structure is relatively uniform within large open pit mines, but surprisingly some systems will overlook the need for detailed breakout in comparatively high cost areas. In some other systems, unrelated costs will be lumped together, preventing careful analysis of cost accrual.

VENTILATION may be defined as the process by which vitiated air of an inclosed or partly inclosed space is continuously replaced by fresh air. Fresh air has been defined as invigorating pure air. Pure dry air at sea level contains the following gases:1 Analysis of Air at Sea Level PER CENT. It was, however, well known that the untoward effects produced on those exposed to such air was not due to the concentration of the carbon dioxide. It has been found that the untoward effects on the comfort and efficiency of those so exposed are due to the increased temperature and humidity. It has been found that men can breathe air containing many times the amount of carbon dioxide found in our worst ventilated theaters and assembly halls, which, according to Rosenau, do not contain above 0.5 per cent. carbon dioxide.

Underground coal mine planning has traditionally focused on the mine design aspects concerning safety and efficiency in the quest to produce low cost coal. Very little attention has been given to coal quality control aspects of mine planning at most US underground coal mines. With the enactment of the Clean Air Act of 1970, the generally high sulfur content of coal has become a major concern for the coal-fired power plants in the east. Similarly, the ash and the Btu content of coal are equally important for boiler efficiency. Coal mine planning must incorporate coal quality control aspects as well as traditional safety and efficiency aspects. According to an article in Coal Age (March, 1982), nearly one-half of the US coal exported to Europe does not meet the contract specifications regarding ash, sulfur and Btu contents. Although one of the reasons cited for this problem was "inadequate sampling at the US ports," the more fundamental cause probably lies in the inadequate quality control of run-of-mine (ROM) coal at the source. To perform adequate quality control of ROM coal, mines need predicted short-term in-situ coal quality information. Such predictions are generally based on whatever available sampling information is around the mine workings. Unfortunately, the closest sampling information, in the form of diamond drill hole assays, is often several thousand feet away in most underground coal mines and is inadequate for short-term coal quality prediction purposes. This is because the diamond drill holes (DDH) were traditionally placed in the coal deposit during the mine development phase to determine coal seam continuity and overlying roof conditions. They were not placed for short- term mine planning. A study was undertaken by the University of Arizona for the Homer City Owners in Pennsylvania to show that there is a need for more closely spaced samples, if the short-term coal qualities are to be predicted with any "reasonable" degree of accuracy. Prior to this study, a short-term quality prediction model, STPM, had to be developed. This model uses not only DDH, but also other sample information obtainable during face development work to predict the qualities of in-situ coal that are available in the immediate future.

The magnetic iron ores of the Rees & Wilder tract, Unaka Mountains, East Tennessee, and North Carolina, so far as examined by me, are peculiar in containing considerable quantities of the mineral zircon in dark red-brown crystals, ranging in size from one-tenth of an inch, or less, to five-tenths of an inch in length. As zircons are decomposed by fusion with alkalies, the constituents may exert some favorable influence upon the iron product, which is generally acknowledged to be of superior quality. Phosphorus nitride has been used as a diffusant for introducing phosphorus into silicon under various conditions. It has a temperature -dependent rate of decomposition beginning in the 500°C range, increasing very rapidly above 1000 C, producing gas -eous phosphorus and nitrogen. Best control was obtained with a two-temperature arrangement, with silicon at the proper higher diffusion temperature. It is an easier compound to use than the usual P2O5 because it is nonhygroscopic and yields temperature-controlled surface concentrations together with excellent final surfaces. Surface doping nearly as high as that produced by phosphorus pentoxide has been observed for sources at 850" to 900°C. Reproducible high sheet resistances were obtained by using slow flow rates (1 linear in. per min) and staggered-baffle gas mixing with the nitride at 550°C. Both inert gas (argon, nitrogen) and oxidizing ambients have been examined. Oxygen reacts to produce anhydrous P2O5, consuming the source at a rapid rate. Nitrogen, except for short diffusion times, suppressed the dissociation reaction and sometimes produced inferior surfaces. Argon appears to be a more useful ambient. PHOSPHORUS is a common impurity atom which may be introduced into a semiconductor lattice to create a p-n junction or an nn contact region. Various investigators1-4 have described techniques which can be used with either elemental phosphorus or certain of its compounds. This paper discusses a newly available compound of phosphorus, phos- some processes silicon wafers are precoated with a phosphate glass which acts as the doping source. Although a nonoxidizing form like elemental phosphorus or a phosphine can be used, most diffusion methods usually involve the use of phosphorus pentoxide. Because of the rapid volatility of this compound, a two-step process is often used, combining a gaseous deposition to introduce a predetermined quantity of phosphorus into the silicon with a later redistribution to obtain the desired distribution and surface concentration. Such a process usually involves predepositing phosphorus at surface concentrations greater than 1020 cm-'. At such doping levels the phosphorus-diffusion coefficient appears to be strongly concentration-dependent.596 Distribution profiles5'9 for these high concentrations of phosphorus do not follow Fick's laws, having extended subsurface regions which appear electrically to be nearly uniformly doped with ionized impurity atoms. Radioactive-tracer experiments also show near-surface anomalies in the distribution profile. Additionally, it has been shown1' that the introduction of very high surface concentrations of impurity atoms into silicon (a step necessitated by the subsequent lowering of concentration during the redistribution) creates dislocations, even in material having no dislocations originally. For device fabrication the use of oxide masking introduces certain difficulties and limitations.7'8 The standard practice of using phosphorus pentoxide as an impurity source adds other problems to these because of the speed and ease with which this compound reacts with moisture present in any gas in contact with it. In fact, P2O5 is one of the fastest and most effective drying agents for gases. Because it is such an excellent desiccant, completely anhydrous phosphorus pentoxide is difficult to obtain and is even more difficult to keep dry. Adequately dry gloved boxes must be used for storage and transfer of the chemical. The presence of even traces of moisture will cause formation of phosphoric acids which, during the high-temperature diffusion, results in polyphosphoric acids of variable composition. The refractory linings of open-hearth steel furnaces above the bath line are subject to severe wear not only from the heat caused by the combustion of the fuel and the reactions of the bath, but also from the melting action of the gases when not controlled and directed, and from the scouring of the oxides, etc. with which the products of combustion are charged. The framework that encases or binds the furnace is made up primarily of an iron or steel pan in which the furnace proper is built, side and end buckstays, and tie-rods. The expansion and contraction are so great and variable that the bindings may be subjected to severe stresses unless the tie-rods are carefully adjusted in heating up the furnace, but they are most affected by direct heat and usually become deformed from that cause when the lining is worn thin and, sometimes, when sections of the lining fall in and expose some of the framework. A deformed framework displaces the skewback of the roof arch and tends to distort or crush the roof. Bent buckstays deform the front wall, causing the door frames to stand away from the lining so that the gases burn between the lining and the frames, destroying both of them. Frequently the frames are attached to the buckstays; then when the latter bend the frames usually break. Preventing the distortion of the framework and maintaining the economy of the refractories are real factors in the cost of steel making. Nat only does the cost of general repairs and reconstruction add directly to the cost of steel produced, but the time lost in making repairs cuts down the steel production and increases the overhead expense of both the furnace shop and its allied foundry or mills. Many years ago water-cooled equipment applied to iron blast furnaces made it possible to increase greatly not only the size and production of the furnaces but also the life of the lining. It also cut down the loss from frequent repairs. The open-hearth furnace is a much later invention, especially as a commercial factor; for though it dates from the Fred Siemens patent of 1856, much more progress was made in the Bessemer process until the latter eighties and most of the development

THE mineral trona was discovered on Government land in 1938, about 18 miles west of the town of Green River, Wyo., in the core of the John Hay, Jr., well, a test well drilled for oil by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co. in sec. 2, T. 18 N., R. 110 W., sixth principal meridian. Although no oil or gas was reported, the drilling led to a discovery of great potential economic importance and exceptional scientific interest. Trona is a relatively rare mineral found at various places in playa deposits but not previously found at any great depth. It is composed of hydrous sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate (Na2CO3.NaHCO3.2H20). Pure trona contains the equivalent of 70.35 per cent of sodium carbonate. Total sodium computed to carbonate times 1.42 equals the percentage of trona in the absence of other sodium carbonate minerals in the sample. ANALYSES Two short pieces of core sent to the author a few days after the completion of the Hay well were analyzed by R. C. Wells[t] and found to be exceptionally pure trona. A brief article on this discovery has already been published.1 Arrangements were then made through W. T. Nightengale[$] for the author to inspect and sample the core. The company log of the well included notations of sodium salt crystals from a depth of 1190 to 1820 ft. Not being able to identify all the minerals present, the author selected several specimens of the core for petrographic examinations and sampled the sections of trona for analysis. J. J. Fahey, of the Geological Survey, examined the specimens and reported most of the crystals to be a new anhydrous sodium carbonate and calcium carbonate mineral (Na2CO3.2CaCO3), which he named shortite,2 after Maxwell N. Short.* He analyzed the samples of trona, with the results shown in Table I. [ ] In addition to the 10 ft. I in. of trona in the first section, it is reasonable to assume that the 9 ft. 8 in. for which no core was available for sampling is either mostly trona or some other soluble salt, but it should not be included in calculating reserves. In the part of the core between 1590 ft. 3 in. and I600 ft. 4 in. the material insoluble in cold water, amounting to about 5 per cent, was estimated petrographically to contain 70 per cent clay, 25 per cent shortite, and 5 per cent pyrite. FLOTATION requires the existence of a definite contact angle. This contact angle, the surface tension of the solution, and adsorption at the solid-fluid interface are quantitatively related. Adsorption of dodecylammonium acetate on hematite was measured for a wide range of concentrations of reagent in solution. Similar measurements for quartz have already been made. Contact angle measurements were then made on polished surfaces of hematite and of quartz immersed in aqueous dodecylammonium acetate solutions, and a functional relationship was sought between adsorption density at the mineral-solution interface and the contact angle. Finally, the surface tension of the aqueous amine acetate solutions was measured. These data were combined to give an evaluation of the work of adhesion for the three-phase system. Specular hematite was crushed and then ground dry in a laboratory porcelain mill, with flint pebbles, to pass a 200-mesh screen. The ground product was sized in a Haultain infrasizer, and one of the granular sizes (cone No. 3) was used in all adsorption tests. A hand magnet was used to remove magnetite and abraded iron. Quartz was removed in a Frantz isodynamic magnetic separator. The purified hematite was leached in aqua regia, washed with distilled water until the washings appeared free of electrolyte by conductance measurement, dried in a low-temperature oven, and stored in a pyrex container. The specific surface of the closely sized hematite was determined by the krypton gas adsorption method.' Three measurements gave an average value of 1350 sq cm per g. Chemical analysis showed Fe -69.37 pct, insol = 0.72 pct. The quartz used in the flotation tests had been prepared by Chang" for an earlier investigation. Demineralized distilled water was used for all test solutions. Dissolved salt content was of the order of 0.03 ppm, expressed in terms of sodium chloride, as estimated from conductance measurements. Dodecylammonium acetate was obtained from Armour & CO. in two forms, the unmarked compound and a preparation marked by carbon 14 in the hydrocarbon chain of the aminium ion. Specific activity of the active salt was 0.134 millicurie per g. The important physico-chemical constants for the primary amine salt have been reviewed by de Bruyn. The calculated effect of hydrolysis of amine salt on pH of aqueous solutions and the effect of pH on the distribution ratio of the alkylammonium ion to free amine are of particular interest. All other chemicals used in this investigation were of analytical reagent grade. A column method' was used for adsorption work. Attainment of equilibrium distribution in the adsorption column depends on the solid-solution contact time, hence upon the volume of solution passed. It was assumed that contact time required for equilibrium would be a maximum for the lowest reagent concentrations. On this premise it was demonstrated experimentally that the passage of 500 ml of solution through the mineral bed was adequate. An aliquot (1 to 5 cc) of the solution to be analyzed was transferred to a small pyrex cup and allowed to evaporate to dryness at room temperature; 4 or 5 mg of unmarked amine acetate were added to the dried sample and the cup and its contents were transferred to the combustion system for analysis. Evaporation at room temperature must be emphasized, as even slightly elevated temperatures result in loss of reagent. A laboratory model G Beckman pH meter equipped with a glass electrode was used to measure pH of amine acetate solutions. The technique of internal gas counting of radioactive carbon dioxide in a Geiger-Muller counter was used. Developed originally by Brown and Miller,- his method was adapted to the analysis of carbon-14 marked flotation reagents by Chang, de Bruyn, and Bloecher. nalytica1 method and procedures have been described in detail by Bloecher.' Contact angles were measured by the captive-bubble technique." The mineral specimens were carefully selected to avoid cracks and inclusions of other minerals. A large amount of time has been devoted to the microscopical study of the copper-zinc alloys, emphasis naturally being placed upon the commercially important alloys of the system. Suitable methods are available for microscopically recognizing the two phases richest in copper, Per cent,by weight FIG. 1.-COPPER-ZINC EQUILIBRIUM DIAGRAM. (Frond National Metals Handbook, 1933.) but none appear to have been developed for the positive identification of the other phases. This is, however, accomplished, for the phases normally encountered, by an electrolytic method described in the following pages. Five phases of the copper-zinc diagram (Fig. 1) are considered for the purpose of this paper: the solid solution of zinc in copper, alpha (a); the intermediate phases, beta (ß), gamma (y), and epsilon (e); and the solid solution of copper in zinc, eta (n). Fused alumina or silica crucibles were used as the containing vessel. X-ray powder photographs were taken with CrKcll radiation and the use of Straumanis type Norelco cameras of 114.6 mm diam. Crystallographic data for these compounds are shown in Table I. These results are in agreement with others of this series reported previousiy by Wernick and Geller.l The abnormally large atomic volume of Eu and Yb metal3 is manifested in EuAl2, and YbAl2, when one compares them with the compounds reported in Ref. 1. However, the behavior of Yb in the Ni compound is the same as that observed in Ni5Yb having the Cu5Ca structure.4 Thus, it appears that Yb has a valence closer to 3 only in the Ni compounds; i.e.. the 2s and Id electrons are lost to the conduction band.1,4 Europium in EuAl2 appears to have a valence closer to 2. In previous work.' X-ray patterns of ingots of NdCo2 indicated a multiphase material with faint indication of the presence of a phase having the MgCu2 structure. It was thought that NdCo2 formed peri-tectically from the melt, resulting in a multiphase system when cooled under nonequilibrium conditions. An X-ray pattern of a sample from a melt cooled more slowly than in past work showed that the major phase was NdCo2. The lattice constant, Table 1, is in excellent agreement with the value one can predict from the data of Ref. 1. One of the other phases was identified as Co5Nd. The author wishes to thank J. H. A reinvestigation of the lattice parameters of Ti-Sn alloys by the present authors has revealed consistently hiher c and a values than those obtained by Worrier. The difference is most pronounced in the c-parameters which are, therefore, used as a basis of comparison. This discrepancy was not due to air contamination, since precautions were taken to exclude this possibility. Specimens for Debye-Scherrer photograms were prepared by arc-melting 15-g buttons of Bureau of Mines titanium and 99.99 pct Sn, with compositions of 6, 8, 10, and 12 at. pct Sn. These buttons were forged under an oxygen-acetylene torch to 1/8-in. sq rods to produce relatively fine grained material. Scale and some surface were ground off, and the rods, after wrapping in molybdenum and titanium sheet, were vacuum annealed 15 min at 800 °C to remove hydrogen. Heat treatment of one of the samples at 875°C to produce ß and reveal a at the surface showed no surface contamination. Following the vacuum treatment, the specimens were wrapped in molybdenum and annealed for 1 week at 800°C under two atmospheres of argon. After water-quenching, the rods were ground so that the thickness tapered to 0.1 mm at the tips. The ground specimens were then recapsuled as previously and reannealed 1 hr at 800°C to remove cold work. The
