Procedures have been developed to study the performance characteristics of unconfined pilot water floods using scaled laboratory models. The effects of operating conditions on pilot performance for variozrs well patterns have been investigated. The limitations of the laboratory model studies are outlined. Relationships between the oil recoveries of pilots and large-scale floods have been established. The applications of model studies to the prediction of large-scale waterflood performance and pilot flood design are discussed. INTRODUCTION Pilot water floods are undertaken to evaluate operational procedures and to gain advance information about the performance of an extensive water flood. In general, however, the performance of a pilot flood is not directly indicative of what can be expected from a large-scale pattern water flood. This difference stems from the fact that the over-all flow configurations are not the same for the two systems. A water flood normally consists of an array of identical well patterns. In such an array, the perimeters of the well patterns are axes of symmetry and act as impermeable boundaries. Thus, an extensive, pattern water flood can be visualized as a repetition of "confined" floods. In contrast, a pilot water flood involving only one or a few well patterns is "unconfined". Here the well patterns are not balanced by other flood units; hence, the perimeter of the pilot area does not act as an effective boundary. Accordingly, only a portion of the fluids injected (and also of those originally contained within the pilot area) is captured by the producers of the pilot. The rest escapes into the surrounding reservoir. This usually causes the amounts of oil and water produced in the pilot to be different from those recovered by a producer in an extensive water flood. Moreover, the recovery observed in the pilot can be expected to be greatly influenced by operating conditions, i.e., by the bottom-hole pressures at the injection and producing wells. The above considerations show that full utilization of pilot test results and reliable prediction of large- scale water floods require a knowledge of the relationship between the recovery performance of confined and unconfined well patterns. To date, only limited basic information is available on the behavior of pilot water floods. Craig, et al,' have investigated the effects of initial gas saturation, oil-to-water mobility ratio, and well damage on the oil recovered from a single, "normal" five-spot pilot pattern (Fig. 1). Rosenbaum and Matthews2 studied the effect of initial gas saturation and mobility ratio on the ratio of production rate to injection rate for various groupings of five-spot patterns. Paulse113 investigated the effect of mobility ratio and distance from the pilot to the edge of the reservoir on the areal sweep in a single "inverted" five-spot (Fig. 1). However, none of these studies considered the effect of operating conditions on pilot flood behavior. Moreover, hardly any of the work to date dealt explicitly with the oil-recovery performance of the pilot floods. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of interrelation between pilot flood behavior and operating conditions, to illustrate this interrelation by means of experimental data and to compare the recovery performances of dif-

"The Rockets' Red Glare" of the Fourth of July is produced by strontium compounds. However, strontium has a number of less spectacular uses; i.e. in, or in connection with, the manufacture of ceramics, caustic soda, glass, railway and truck signal flares, beet sugar and steel. The principal ore of strontium for use both as the mineral and for production of compounds is celestite (SrSO4). This mineral varies in color from white to pink or blue depending on presence of impurities. It has a hardness of about 3.5 and specific gravity of 3.9. It is brittle and has perfect basal and prismatic cleavages. The high grade ore is obtained from England, hence it has become the standard for all other producing areas. (See analyses, Table 1.) The most objectionable impurity in English celestite is iron, coming mostly from adhering clay. On the other hand, Mexican celestite, while no higher in strontium sulfate content, is extremely low in iron (less than 0.2 pct), hence it is more desirable for certain uses. Most of the celestite in Spain and in the United States is high in calcium and barium, and commonly high in iron, and requires some form of beneficiation in order to be equal to English ore. The natural carbonate (SrCO3), or strontianite, is less important than celestite as a source of strontium, because it is less abundant and is not so widespread in its occurrence. Furthermore, it generally occurs with calcite (CaCO3) and lead sulfide (PbS), and for most uses these impurities are detrimental. This mineral is generally white or yellowish, forming needle-like crystals. It has a hardness of about 3.7 and a specific gravity of 3.68-3.8. The mineral is brittle and has an imperfect cleavage. A typical analysis of German strontianite is shown in Table 1. [ ] Distribution of Deposits UNITED STATES Occurrences of strontium minerals are known in Arkansas, Arizona, California, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington. Celestite occurs in the Vulture Mountains, Maricopa County, Arizona in beds three to ten feet thick associated with sandstone, gypsum, and barite. Because of the low strontium content, approximately 86 pct SrSO4, it has no commercial value. A large deposit of celestite occurs in San Bernardino County, California, in the Cady Mountains near Argus Station, about eight miles west of Ludlow. The celestite here is interbedded with shaly and clayey tuff in a zone about 300 ft thick. Massive, finely crystalline ore has been recovered with an analysis

The Research Division of The New Jersey Zinc Company (of Pa.) has conducted, over a period of years, numerous tests of the reducibility of various zinc ores and the reactivity of various kinds of coal, using a number of different experimental methods. Most of these tests have involved the reduction of mixtures of ore and coal. In such cases the following simultaneous reactions are believed to be mainly responsible for the production of zinc, as was shown by Bodenstein1 some years ago: ZnO+ CO = Zn + CO2 [1] C + CO2 = 2 CO [2] Each of these reactions is dependent upon the other for the supply of CO and CO2 , respectively, and the over-all rate of formation of zinc vapor will be determined by the slower of these two reactions. An analogous pair of reactions sometimes of importance is: ZnO + H2 = Zn + H2 O [31 C + H2O = CO + Ha [4] While it is possible to obtain an indication of the relative reducibility of various ores, or of a fine versus a coarse ore, by testing them with a given coal, and while coal reactivities may be measured in a corresponding manner, a more direct determination of relative reaction rates is possible by carrying out the desired reactions, such as I and 2, separately and under reproducible conditions. It is one purpose of this paper to present some of the results that have been obtained by the latter method. C. G. Maier2 discusses the relative rates of reactions I and 2 and concludes that while at relatively low temperatures reaction I is faster than reaction 2, this difference becomes less with increasing temperatures, although at smelting temperatures reaction I is still the faster. He also says (p. 48), "At temperatures . . . between IIOO° and I3oo°C., . . . the zinc oxide reduction reaction is intrinsically more rapid than its physical limitations; that is, it is limited by gas diffusion rates." In the course of numerous reactivity tests involving the separate use of reactions and I and 2, we have obtained data that show by direct experiment, we believe for the first time, the correctness of Maier's statements concerning these reactions. We also include data on the relative rate of reaction 3, involving reduction by hydrogen. Finally, some interesting results obtained by carrying out the reduction of a zinc ore-coal briquet in streaming atmospheres of nitrogen, carbon monoxide and hydrogen, respectively, are presented. *

The East Tintic district in central Utah has produced ores of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc valued at more than $120,000,000. All of this ore has been produced from blind ore bodies in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks that are concealed beneath hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks and cut by intrusive bodies of Eocene age. The Paleozoic rocks, which range in age from Early Cambrian to Mississippian form the core and limbs of a large, northtrending asymmetric anticline that is cut by low-angle thrust faults, high-angle transcurrent faults, mineralized fissures and faults, and normal faults that are both older and younger than the mineralized fissures. The ore bodies generally may be grouped into two classes: ( 1) massive replacement bodies that are rich in silver, lead, zinc and manganese and (2) fissure veins that are valuable primarily for their content of gold, copper, and silver. The replacement ore bodies are localized chiefly in the Middle Limestone Member of the Ophir Formation of Middle Cambrian age where it has been thrust-faulted against older or younger rocks and cut by northeast-trending mineralized fissure zones. The fissure veins primarily are productive only in the Lower Cambrian Tintic Quartzite. Extensive lowgrade deposits of lead-zinc-silver ore recently have been discovered in Devonian carbonate rocks in the Lower plate of the East Tintic thrust fault but as yet are unevaluated. The principal guides to ore include: ( 1) intersections of northeast-trending fissures and crossbreaking faults that brecciate the carbonate rocks; (2) zones of late-stage pyritic, calcitic, and sericitic alteration in the lavas; ( 3) primary geochemical anomalies in the altered rocks; and ( 4) mineral zoning patterns of the known ore bodies. The present development of the Burgin mine would seem to assure the continued productivity of the district for at least a decade.

Everyone in the coal industry from top management to the preparation engineer is vitally interterested in recovering as much salable coal as possible from the run-of-mine product. Coal losses from a preparation plant occur in the solid refuse material being discharged from the plant and in the bleed-off slurry from the water circuit. The refuse is generally hauled from the plant in solid form by trucks, conveyors, or aerial trams to the refuse or culm banks or it may be crushed and transported by hydraulic methods to refuse ponds or dams. The loss of coal in refuse material and the extent of this problem has been covered in another paver.' The loss of salable coal in the plant bleed-off slurry is one of the water circuit problems in coal preparation plants. Slurries originate at various places in the processing circuits and are usually disposed of by transportation to waste ponds known as slurry ponds. Even though the combustible material discharged as slurry and refuse from the plant is labeled a loss, the loss must only be considered temporary. There is a tendency at the present time to examine refuse and slurry losses and to reprocess these materials to recover valuable coal. Slurries from eight bituminous coal preparation plants in central and western Pennsylvania have been sampled and examined to determine the amount of recoverable coal in each. Examinations of the samples were made to determine the tons per hour of solids and the gallons per minute of water in the slurry; the size, ash, and sulfur analyses of the solids; and the sink-float characteristics of the larger solids. The extreme fines (—325 mesh material) from one of the samples has been examined further to determine the micron size fractions as well as the ash and sulfur content of the micron sizes. Collection of the Samples: Field trips were made to each of the plants where samples were obtained and discussions held with the preparation engineer prior to sampling. The flowsheet of the plant operation was studied and a time-period selected to obtain a representative sample. At least 20 1-gal samples of total plant bleed-off suspensions were collected at each plant in increments over designated periods belived to be typical of the plant flow Three of the samples were obtained from plants in the Pittsburgh area. Each plant supplied information on the capacity, operating time, type of cleaning equipment used, water and material balances, and auxiliary equipment. From the time required to collect given amounts of slurry and from the amount of solids in the slurry, total solids discharges from the plant were calculated and compared with the plant flow. Ash and sulfur analyses of the total solids were also checked, at some plants, with company figures. In all cases where checks could be made there was reasonable agreement between company figures and those reported here. Analysis of the Slurries: Representative fractions of properly agitated samples were examined in the laboratory to determine the specific gravities of the slurries. The solids and water were separated by filtration to check the weight of each so that the percent of solids in the pulp could be determined. From the resulting data, presented in Table I, it may be seen that the percent solids in the slurries ranges from 2.8 to 39.0 and the amount of solids from 2.61 to 45.61 tph. Size Analysis of Solids: Representative fractions of the slurries were permitted to settle and the clear water was removed by siphoning. The solids were then wet-screened at 28, 35, 48, 65, 100, 150, 200 and 325 mesh. Results of the size analyses are presented in Table 11. These results indicate the extreme variation of sizes and in most cases the degree of fineness of the solids. The amount of —325 mesh ranges from 22.5 to 84.5 pct and the amount of+200 mesh from 8.3 to 69.1 pct.

The electro-magnetic separator of Mr. G. Conkling, Glens Falls, N. Y., described by Mr. Birkinbine* in a paper at the New York meeting of the Institute, in February, 1889, has been in successful operation at the Tilly Foster 'mine for a considerable period, under the disadvantages which seem to be the inevitable attendants of pioneer enterprises in new technical fields. The results of a run of several months, which the Superintendent, Mr. S. P. Tomkins, has taken pains to collate, are here presented by his courteous permission, and that of Mr. E. S. Moffat, the energetic and skilful General Manager of the Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company, to whom our profession is already indebted for examples of bold and ingenious practice in mine-engineering. It is believed that these figures will assist those who are planning similar operations to decide intelligently what they may, and, more important still, what they may not, expect to accomplish. The local difficulties in the way of this experiment at the Tilly Foster mine were many and great. Only about two-thirds of the waste-dump, resulting from the assorting of previous years, is ore; and this varies in content of iron from 20 to 28 per cent. The remainder is rock, some (from horses in the vein) showing particles of adhering mineral, some (from the foot- and hanging-walls) entirely barren. The expense of overhauling the dump and removing this rock is by no means the least of the numerous items which must be charged against the concentration. Associated with the lean ore are hornblende and other minerals, carrying iron in the non-magnetic state, which must necessarily be washed away with the tailings. Analytic expressions were developed and applied in two preuious papers to predict effects of solidification variables on macrosegvegation. In this paper, experiments are reported to test the analyses quantitatively and qualitatively. Good quantitative agreement is obtained between predicted and measured compositions for the following types of segregation (all experiments were on laboratory-size ingots of Al-4.5 pct Cu alloy): (a) inuerse segregation, (b) composition distribution in ingots solidified with unidirectional heat and fluid flow, (c) simulated centerline segregation, and (d) segregation resulting fro, change in solidification cross section. In addition, qualitative agreement of prediction of theory with experiment is obtained for (a) segregation resulting from sudden change in heat extraction during solidification, (b) centerline segregation in a bidirectionally solidified ingot, and (c) under-riser positive segregation. IN two previous papers,''2 it was shown that a variety of apparently different types of macrosegregation result from the same basic mechanism. This mechanism is the flow of solute -rich liquid to feed solidification and thermal contractions. Analytic expressions were derived and examples given of their application to predict macrosegregation. Calculations were for Al-4.5 pct Cu alloy. In this paper, we describe a series of experiments designed to test results of the foregoing calculations. All experiments were on laboratory-size ingots (weighing 10 lb or less), of A1-4.5 pct Cu alloy, nominal composition. APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE A typical mold and chilling arrangement used for unidirectional solidification is shown in Fig. 1. Before casting, this assembly was placed in an electrically heated air furnace, and heated to 680" to 700°C. When the plaster reached the desired temperature (usually 1 to 2 hr after the furnace temperature), the mold was filled through a funnel extending from the outside of the furnace into the cavity. The assembly, with liquid, was held for several minutes to allow convection to subside. The coolant, either air or water (depending on the desired solidification rate), was turned on and the ingot solidified. With the four sides and top insulated, heat removal for solidification was through the bottom surface, resulting in a fully columnar structure. Design of the casting cavity was varied, as discussed below, to produce desired macrosegregation effects. However, for castings solidified with unidirectional heat flow, the top was always open to the furnace atmosphere and temperature. The bottom sur- face rested on a chill through which the heat was extracted, and all other surfaces were insulated with plaster. In one case to be discussed, the mold design was changed to obtain bidirectional solidification. In this case, two vertical chills were used (on two faces of the mold) and the bottom was insulated. In a last case discussed, that dealing with under-riser segregation, experiments were conducted in bottom-chilled sand molds at ambient temperature. Except for this one case, all experiments were conducted in the electrically heated air furnace as described above. In many ingots, thermocouples were used to obtain continuous records of solidification. In all cases, these were chromel-alumel couples with output continuously monitored on a twelve-channel recorder. Where thermocouples were employed, these were embedded in the refractory mold walls during mold-making so their heads extended to the vertical centerline. Six to nine couples were employed, placed at intervals from the chill. METAL-MEL TING PROCEDURE Aim analysis was A1-4.5 pct Cu; alloy was prepared from high-purity aluminum (99.9 pct Al) and A1-Cu master alloy (50 pctOFHC Copper, 50 pct high-purity Al). The A1-4.5 pct Cu alloy was cast in 5- to 7-lb ingots for subsequent remelting for the macrosegregation experiments. Melting for ingot casting was as follows. After preheating the melting crucible for an hour or more, the charge was melted and superheated to a temperature of 690" to 720°C. After stirring, the melt was degassed with chlorine for 10 min. Although considerable information has been published concerning manganese additions to the aluminum bronzes, these data refer principally to the two-phase alloys containing 8 to II pet aluminum, with some incidental information on the single-phase alpha solid solution alloys. Straussl gives an excellent review of the literature on aluminum bronzes up to 1927 and a bulletin2 of the Copper Development Association brings the bibliography up to 1938. The most extensive work on manganese addition is that of Rosenhain and Lantsberry,3 who investigated alloys ranging up to 10 pct aluminum and up to 10 pct manganese, and presented data on the physical properties of sand-cast, chill-cast, and several wrought alloys. The greater portion of the work, however, concerns alloys ranging from 7 to 10 pct aluminum in the cast condition and sheds little light on the properties of wrought single-phase alloys. Corson4 notes that alloys containing 10 pct manganese and 4 pct aluminum are not hardenable by heat-treatment, while one with 15 pct manganese and 5 pct aluminum can be hardened, but he gives no tensile data on it. In fact, no systematic study of the properties of single-phase wrought alloys containing substantial amounts of manganese has been reported. It should also be noted that most of the investigators worked with alloys containing significant amounts of iron and silicon, and that these impurities, whether intentionally added or accrued from the raw materials used in the preparation of the alloys, may be expected to have a direct bearing on the resultant properties. In the work on alloys made with electrolytic manganese, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken an investigation of the copper-manganese-aluminum system for the purpose of establishing the constitution and properties of high-purity alloys. In a recent paper6 the authors reported a metallographic investigation of the alpha solid solution area and the adjoining fields of the copper-manganese-aluminum system up to 50 pct manganese. This study established the alpha-phase boundaries at 50" temperature levels from 400' to 850°C. It was found that the addition of manganese to copper-aluminum alloys decreases the solub%ty of aluminum in the alpha phase (Fig I), curving the boundary toward the copper-manganese base line. The greatest change occurs in the first 20 to 25 pct manganese, which decreases the solubility of aluminum to approximately 4 pct. With larger amounts of manganese the alpha boundary tends to parallel the copper-manganese binary. At 13oo'F and higher,

By definition the word "grout" means a thin mortar, or a kind of plaster or cement, and "grouting" means to fill up or finish with grout. The words "cement," "plaster" and "mortar" mean a substance that is used in a soft state which subsequently hardens. Thus, grouting is the filling of void space with a substance that hardens. Construction cements are the most common substances used, either by themselves or in mixtures, but the term grouting is applied quite correctly when other substances such as plastics and certain chemicals are used. Also, the use of the term grouting to cover the filling of voids with materials that do not actually become hard, such as the flotation tailings used in grouting in the southeast Missouri lead district, should be considered correct, as some stiffening does take place and, anyway, it is a better descriptive term than any substitute. Engineers are interested in grouting because some of the materials with which they must work contain voids, and certain conditions can be improved if these voids can be filled with something solid and permanent. Grouting is done to accomplish several purposes: I. To stop the passage of fluids and gases, 2. To cement materials together to make them stronger, and 3. To prevent consolidation of materials by filling void space with something solid as a replacement for the air and water that could be forced out under load. The construction industry uses grouting extensively for all three purposes. Grouting is used to stop water percolation under and around dams. It is used to control water flow in tunnel driving and in shaft sinking. It is used to improve foundation conditions under civil engineering structures by permanently filling void space and thereby reducing settlement, or by cementing broken rock together and increasing its supporting strength. The oil and gas industry does a lot of grouting, primarily to stop the passage of gases and fluids. The search for oil at increasingly greater depths has meant greater investment per well, and the oil industry has spent large sums on development of improved drilling methods. This

THE claim is made in a number of patents1,2,3,4 that some compounds of the class known as aryl sulphides have collector properties. One of these patents generalizes the claim to include all aryl sulphides, whose generic formula is R-S¬R[=]-R’ (where x = r,2, . . . ), with the restriction that if the aromatic radicals R, R' contain substituent groups these groups may not contain nitrogen or oxygen. Moses, Hess, and Perkins cite as evidence for their claims the results of flotation tests on Anaconda and Miami copper ores using Biphenyl sulphide, ditolyl disulphide and dinapthyl disulphide as collectors. The use of alkyl sulphides as collectors has also been reported5 with the conclusion that the alkyl sulphides are better collectors than the corresponding aryl sulphides. The experimental work cited appears to confirm this contention. In order to test these claims with respect to diphenyl sulphide, a sample, purchased from the Eastman Kodak Co., was tested against Anaconda ore. The procedure followed was that of Moses, Hess, and Perkins. A sample of ore weighing 500 grams was placed in a laboratory ball mill. To this was added 220 grams of water, 0.06 grams of commercial diphenyl sulphide (1/4 lb. per ton of ore), and 0.8 grams of lime (3 lb. per ton of ore). The material was ground until 93 per cent passed a 65mesh screen. This pulp was diluted to 16 per cent solids. A sample of the diluted pulp was placed in a Minerals Separation type of laboratory flotation cell. After a 2-min. agitation period, pine oil was added and the froth collected for a period of 15 min. This test recovered 68 per cent of the copper, with a ratio of concentration of 6.8: 1. The tailing assay was 0.3 per cent Cu. Moses, Hess and Perkins attained a recovery of 75 per cent, with a ratio concentration of 12: 1. Although these results do not compare too well with those of Moses, Hess and Perkins, subsequent tests showed an improvement, as judged by vanning of the tails. It is concluded, therefore, that the patent results are confirmed. CONTACT-ANGLE TESTS In order to study the response of the various minerals, found in Anaconda ore, to commercial diphenyl sulphide, some contact-angle tests were made. Polished particles of bornite, chalcocite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and quartz were conditioned for 15 min. in a suspension of diphenyl sulphide in water. The concentration of this suspension was 0.284 grams per liter, this being the concentration of this reagent in the ball mill. The conditioned particles were rinsed with water (not rubbed with filter paper or boiled linen) and then tested against an air bubble in the bubble machine, with the following results: born-

DURING colonial times, Brazil was famous for the richness of her alluvial gold deposits. Paul Ferrand has estimated that the gold produced during the period from 1700 to 1820 was the equivalent of some 64 million pounds sterling. Since that time, most of the more prolific alluvial deposits have been exhausted. A few gold mines are still func-tioning, notably the Morro Velho mine, which is one of the deepest mines in the world. Today, the gold production of Brazil is insignificant when compared with world figures, but there are still many gold-bearing regions and it is probable that in at least some of them profitable returns would result from an exploitation program taking advantage of all the most modern innovations in gold mining and ore treatment on a large scale. In order to demonstrate the value of some of these abandoned pros-pects and stir up interest in increasing the national gold production, the government has stimulated research. Experimental plants have been and are being established in various places, and tests on large quantities of ores are being carried out on a semicommercial basis. The Geological Survey of the State of Minas Geraes is very active in this line and the Federal Institution is also showing an increased interest in the matter.

It is often necessary to calculate the size of a hoisting-plant required to raise a given quantity of material, either as a preliminary to the detail design of the machinery, or to decide whether machinery on hand or offered by a manufacturer is adapted to the work to be done. The first element of the problem to be determined is the load to be raised. In a mine that is already developed, this is limited by the size of car that can be hoisted out of the mine and that will pass through the underground gangways. If these place no limits on the design, the size of the load will depend on the output desired per day, and on the number of hoists that call be made per day. The latter are fixed by the time required per hoist and the number of hours available for hoisting, after deducting from the working-day the time required for raising and lowering men, sending down supplies, and for the many small delays in handling cars. It must also be decided whether the hoisting is to be done in one shift or in all of them.

SOME of the principal metallurgical difficulties en-countered in the differential flotation of lead-zinc-iron sulfide ores arise from the following causes: The oxidized, or partly-oxidized, condition of one or more of the minerals ; impurities in the minerals them-selves; composition and character of the gangue miner-als; soluble salts in the ore; and unfavorable metal ratios. In many of the ores received at a custom mill there are present appreciable amounts of oxidized' or partly-oxidized minerals, although the ores may be substantially sulfides. Often the ores are not oxidized at all when received but on account of operating condi-tions at the mill it is necessary to stock them for several months before they can be milled, and considerable oxi-dation takes place while they are lying in stock. In most ores received at Midvale, when oxidation is pres-ent, the lead and iron sulfides have been more affected than the zinc sulfide, but with some ores the zinc mineral has also become partly oxidized. Some ores, such as those taken from old mine-dumps or from old stopes, may show very little total oxidation, but the greater part of the valuable minerals has been sufficiently acted upon by oxidation to make the minerals very difficult to float. Ores of this character are among the most difficult the flotation operator has to contend with, be-cause the galena, sphalerite, and pyrite are all sluggish in their behavior in the flotation cells. Only a part of the lead mineral will float in the lead circuit. The re-mainder will lag badly and tend to come up with the zinc or, if badly oxidized, will go -through all the flota-tion circuits into the tailing. The zinc mineral, if it has also been affected by oxidation, will act in a man-ner similar to the lead mineral. A hard pull will be required to float a reasonable percentage of it, and this is likely to bring up so much pyrite that it will be difficult to make a zinc concentrate of commercial grade. If it happens that the zinc mineral has not been no-ticeably affected by oxidation it will tend to float in the lead circuit because a hard pull is also required in that circuit in order to bring up the sluggish galena. When only a fraction of the sulfide minerals has become partly altered, or completely oxidized mineral is present in relatively small quantity, it is usually possible to make reasonably clean concentrates of all three sulfides, that is, lead, zinc and iron concentrates. Most of the oxi-dized and semi-oxidized minerals will go into the tailing and the losses will be proportional to the oxidation.

Shooting Soot from Stacks In the DuPont magazine of June, 1916, S. R. Russell describes a method of cleaning large smoke or kiln stacks which he calls "simple,. economical- slid-most efficient" and-which- he -says can- be used in either-lined or unlined stacks, brick or steel, without fear of injury to the stack or lining. He gives the following specific directions: "The gun can be made out of air old piece of shafting about 4 in. in diameter and 14 to 16 in. long. Bore a hole 1 ¾ in. in diameter and 10 in. long in the center of the piece. Then bore a small horizontal hole ¼ in. in diameter through the piece-to the bottom of the center bore. This hole serves as a touch hole for inserting the fuse. "The-whole thing can be mounted on a pedestal about 6 in. in diameter so that it will stand in an upright position. "The -method of operation is as follows: Pour some FFF Blasting Powder into the mouth of the cannon to about 2 in. from the top. Tamp to the collar with dry clay. , A short piece of fuse is inserted in the touch hole and in contact with the main powder charge. Open the flue door at the bottom of the stack, set the cannon on the bottom and in the center of the stack, light the fuse and close the flue door. "The explosion shakes and loosens the soot adhering to the sides, causing it to fall to the bottom. It can' then be removed through the flue opening.

The stability of a 70/30 Mn-Cu alloy aged to peak damping has been investigated using electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and torsional pendulum measurements. Storage at room temperature or at 100" C causes a reduction in damping capacity. This is shown to be due to the formation of subdomains which "lock" the main domain structure and so hinder their movement. After storage the damping capacity can be restored by a retransformation treatment, which generates structures identical to those found in newly aged specimens. Plastic deformation by rolling also causes a decrease in damping capacity. In this case the damping capacity can only be restored by retransformation if the amount of deformation is less than about 5 pct. THE general metallography and structure of these high damping capacity alloys has been discussed in Part I of this work.1 Part II deals with some of the variables that affect the damping capacity. In particular, the stability of the damping capacity of a 70/30 alloy aged for 2 hr at 425° C and quenched has been investigated. The temperature sensitivity of the damping capacity of a 70/30 alloy aged for 2 hr at 450° C has been reported by Birchon.2 The damping capacity begins to decrease with increasing temperature, and is very low above the M, temperature of 125°C. The cubic — tetragonal transformation is completely reversible and there is no apparent thermal hysteresis associated with the change in damping capacity. Another important effect was first reported by Dean and his coworkers.3 They noticed a decrease in the damping capacity with time for specimens of a quenched tetragonal alloy. More recently workers at the Admiralty Materials Laboratory 4 have studied the stability of an aged 70/30 alloy. They found that the damping capacity decreased to half its original value after about 1000 hr at room temperature. EXPERIMENTAL The techniques used for electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction have been described in Part I. The damping capacity was measured by means of a torsional pendulum, using rectangular specimens, 3 by 0.3 mm with a 6 cm gage length. The specific damping capacity, S.D.C., was calculated as a percent amplitude decay in free vibrations over 10 cycles, starting at an amplitude which corresponded to a 700 psi surface shear stress. Because of the stress dependence of the damping,' the values obtained were about a third those reported for a 5000 psi surface shear stress.' RESULTS a) Effect of Aging Temperature. The effect of aging temperature on the damping capacity is shown in Fig. 1. The damping capacity reaches a peak of 12 pct after aging at 400° to 425°C) then begins to decrease as the volume fraction of a Mn increases. At higher aging temperatures the structure becomes cubic again with a low damping capacity. b) Stability of the Aged Structure. The damping capacity of the aged alloy decreases with time at room temperature. This process could be accelerated by storing at 100°C, when about 100 hr were required for the damping to fall to half its original value. The results of room temperature and 100°C storage, for times up to 1000 hr, are shown in Fig. 2. The damping capacity starts to decrease after about 24 hr at 18° C and 1 to 2 hr at 100°C. It was found, however, that the damping could be almost completely restored by retransformation. The specimens were held at a temperature above the M, for a short time, 250° C for 5 min, and then quenched. A formulation is given and a general analytical solution is presented for the problem of spherical phase growth in multicomponent systems. The results are valid for describing the rate of bubble growth in the absence of translational motion and, therefore, should be relevant to heterogeneous nucleation processes. Typical worked examples are given, which include bubble growth due to the simultaneous diffusion of hydrogen and nitrogen in molten steel, and the growth of CO bubbles in steel, due to the reaction: C + 0 = CO. The calculations predict that the presence of additional components would enhance the growth rate and also increase the absolute rate at which the individual components are transferred into the bubble. These findings should be relevant to degassing processes. THE problem of spherical bubble growth in the absence of translational motion is appropriate to the description of the heterogeneous nucleation and subsequent growth of gas bubbles while attached to a solid surface. Such problems are of considerable practical relevance to various vacuum degassing and steelmaking processes where bubble nucleation and subsequent growth play an important part in the overall reaction mechanism. A definitive formulation of spherical phase growth has been given in the now classical paper by Scriven1 and the analogous problem for solid phase growth has been discussed by Horvay,2 furthermore a thorough review of the relevant literature has also become available.3 All this previous work was concerned with one component or binary systems. The purpose of this paper is to show that the technique developed by Scriven may be generalized to alow the consideration of multicomponent systems. The results of this generalization would be particularly relevant, as gas bubble nucleation in the metallurgical systems previously mentioned frequently involves the simultaneous diffusion of several components. In the following a general formulation is given and typical worked examples are presented. FORMULATION Consider the growth of a spherical gas bubble due to diffusion in a quiescent liquid of infinite extent, as sketched in Fig. 1. The formulation of such problems requires the statement of the following conservation equations relating to the liquid phase: Equation of continuity Equation of motion Conservation of the diffusing species—Diffusion Equation. The following assumptions are made: a) The fluid is incompressible, quiescent, and of infinite extent b) The bubble is stationary, i.e., it undergoes no translational motion c) Spherical symmetry is observed throughout d) The mass diffusivity is constant e) Chemical equilibrium exists at the surface of the bubble, and any reactions occurring there are fast compared to the diffusion process f) Inertia and surface tension effects are neglected. Equations derived on the basis of these assumptions by previous investigators were found to provide a reasonable representation of bubble growth while attached to a surface in organic and aqueous systems4,5 For gas bubble growth in molten metal systems assumptions a) to d) chould hold reasonably well. The exclusion of chemical kinetics as a possible rate limiting step may not be universally valid, but should hold for many systems operating at high temperatures. The effect of hydrodynamic inertia may be neglected for moderate growth rates; finally, the assumption neglecting the effect of interfacial tension on the bubble growth was made for the sake of mathematical convenience; its inclusion would have required the use of quite cumbersome numerical techniques. While surface tension effects could be appreciable on the initial values of the overall growth rate, especially at low absolute pressures and in case of small bubbles, they are not thought to modify the relative effects present in multicomponent systems, the study of which is the objective of this paper. A METHOD was recently devised to indicate two or more successive stages of the migration of grain boundaries in aluminum, and to record the direction of the migration. This technique was used for the study of the various types of boundary migration occurring in high purity aluminum.' The method employs alternate annealing and electrolytic etching treatments, repeated as many times as desired. All successive sets of grain boun- dary positions revealed by the various etches appear superimposed on each other. The last etch is designed to leave an oxide film on the surface which is optically anisotropic. The orientation of the oxide film at each point is determined by the orientation of the underlying aluminum grain. When viewed with polarized light using crossed nicols and a Biot-Klein quartz plate, grains with differing orientations appear in different colors, as described by Hone and Pearson.' On June 15, Dr. E. E. Southard gave the following report to the Advisory Committee on Industrial Mental Hygiene of the. Engineering Foundation. Psychiatric social work, a new specialty in social work, was the topic of several section meetings (500-600 in attendance) at the National Conference for Social Work, held at Atlantic City, June 1-6. The new specialty was stated, by Dr. R. C. Cabot, to be the greatest single advance in medical social work since its establishment. Reports from three schools (Smith, New York, Philadelphia) indicate a good production rate of personnel, probably at least one hundred a; year, chiefly to be absorbed by hospitals, unless industrial psychiatry steps into the field. No detailed public announcements concerning industrial psychiatry were made; but private discussions elicited approval only for the program. Indications are that many non-medical social workers will decide to get additional training to go into medical social work and then to specialize in psychiatric social work and that many medical social workers will desire to specialize in psychiatric social work, with a view partly to entering reconstruction work, partly to entering industrial psychiatry. Suggestion has been made that psychiatric social workers may go into some kinds of, employment management and may look for special courses to that end. Evidence. has been brought that certain "compensated" psychopathic employees have been good (even very good) workmen: emphasis should be laid on this point to show the constructive aspect of industrial psychiatry:

A most stimulating event in the development of world mineral production and technology, the Eighth Commonwealth Mining and Metallurgical Congress was convened at Melbourne Town Hall on March 1 by Sir Maurice Mawby, President of the Congress. Continuing successively at Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, and Surfers Paradise in Australia and then at Wellington, New Zealand, the four plenary sessions, 50 technical sessions, and both local and extended mine and plant tours during the seven weeks of the Congress, provided a superb medium for assessing the present and looking into the future. There were more than 2300 participants from 32 countries in the various functions of the Congress, including 500 delegates and wives from countries other than Australia and New Zealand, and from 18 countries not members of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Registrants from South Africa numbered close to 200 and there were about 100 from Canada, 70 from the United Kingdom, 60 from the United States, and 20 from Zambia. Although most of the overseas delegates held administrative positions with companies, government agencies, and colleges or universities, professions identifiable from registrations included 100 engineers, 60 geologists and 30 metallurgists.
