It has been found that cold work and annealing treatments greatly retard subsequent grain growth and re-crystallization in thoria-dispersed nickel and NiCr. It is suggested that this is due to cavities which form at the particle-matrix interface durilzg cold work. Some of' the cavities formed are stable at elevated temperatures and prevent the mouement of large-angle grain boundaries. The movement of these boundaries at elevated temperatures is known to start recrystal-lization and when they are pinned by voids recrystal-lization is made more difficult. TD Nichro,me had a maximun resistance to recrystallization when the initial structure was coarse-grained and had a low dislocation density. A precipitation reaction occurred between 700° and 1200° F in cold-worked TD Nichrome. It has been shown by Grant and his coworkers1-3 that a large part of the strength of dispersion-hardened materials is a result of the cold-worked structure produced during fabrication. In a comparison of the strength of cold-worked copper with and without an oxide dispersion, Grant4 has demonstrated that there is little difference in strength at room temperature. The function of the dispersion is essentially to maintain the cold-worked structure at higher temperatures than is possible in the base material. The dispersion accomplishes this by making recrystallization more difficult. The mechanism by which this is achieved is discussed in this paper. The fabrication history of the material has been found to greatly influence recrystallization behavior and this aspect is discussed in some detail. I) MATERIAL Three different thoria-dispersed materials were examined. 1) DuPont 2 pet thoria-dispersed nickel (TDNi) in 0.050-in. seeet. The effects of mutual interactions between elements on the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys containing chrormium, columbium, molybdenurn, nickel, or silicon have been determined. The equilibrium nitrogen solubilities in the liquid iron alloys were measured by the Sieverts method. The second-order effects caused by the presence of chrormium, columbium , or silicon in the melt were found to be significant. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys containing several alloying elements has also been measured as a function of melt temperature and nitrogen pressure. The heat of solution of nitrogen in microcomponent iron alloys has been found to be a function of the logarithnz of the activity coefficient of nitrogen, irrvespectilje of the composition of the melt. The heat of solution of nitrogen in pure liquid iron was determined to be 1265 ± 450 cal per g-atom of N over the temperatxue range 1600° to 1800°. Sieverts ' law was obeyed for all melt compositions studied in the pressure interval 0.4 to 1.0 atm. The solubility of nitrogen in liquid pure iron and in many dilute binary liquid-iron alloys has been the subject of many investigations. Pehlke and Elliott' made a comprehensive investigation on this subject in which they summarized and compared previous researches. However, the practical application of these solubility studies requires prediction of the nitrogen solubility in the multicomponent alloys encountered in operating practice. The interaction parameter as defined by wagner2 has been used to predict the behavior of a solute in a complex alloy, and a modification of this approach has met with reasonable success in several instances.'1"5 The necessity for extending the nitrogen solubility data on binary alloys is caused by the lack of direct measurements of the solubility of nitrogen in molten alloy steels. A direct comparison between measured solubilities and those predicted for multicomponent alloys based on data in binary systems has been made in only a few instances, and most of these were reviewed by Langenberg,6 who developed a graphical technique for predicting nitrogen solubilities in multicomponent iron alloys. The solubility of nitrogen has also been studied over the entire Fe-Cr-Ni ternary system by Humbert and Elliott.? Both studies compared the solubilities computed from binary iron alloy data with those measured in ternary alloys in the liquid state at 1600°C. Most of the nitrogen solubility measurements referred to above were for iron alloys at 1600°C; thus, the ability to predict nitrogen solubilities in molten iron alloys has been restricted primarily to alloys at 1600°C. Recently, Nelsson8 devised an approximate method for calculating the change in nitrogen solubility in molten iron alloys as a function of temperature, but an assumption of regular solution behavior limits the applicability of the method. Chipman and Corrigan9,10 have developed an empirical correlation. based on the activity coefficient of nitrogen in the iron alloy at 1600°C, which facilitates the estimation of nitrogen solubilities at higher temperatures. This method also has limitations, due to the necessity of calculating the activity coefficient for nitrogen in a multicomponent iron alloy at 1600°C from the nitrogen solubility data for binary iron alloys. The shortcoming of such a straightforward approach to the problem of predicting nitrogen solubilities is the disregard of mutual interactions between elements in a complex iron melt. This investigation was conducted in an attempt to provide a more reliable method of predicting nitrogen solubilities in multicomponent iron alloys. The effects of the mutual interactions between chromium, nickel, silicon, molybdenum, or columbium in iron were studied, using the Sieverts' technique1,7 to measure the effects of alloy composition, temperature, and pressure on the solubility of nitrogen in ternary liquid iron alloys.

THE Rocky MountainClub brought into the East the spirit of the West; the impulse to build, to develop, to accept unquestion-ingly the comradeship and help of any straight shooter who had it in him to accom-plish things and a will to work. That this was the spirit of the Club was due to its leaders. It was their spirit and they attracted around them men of the same stamp. Among those who made the Club what it was no one had larger in-low fluence than William Boyce Thompson, the vice-president and chief of financial staff. It was characteristic of him that the same financial genius that was employed in building up Nevada Consolidated, In-spiration, Magma, Texas Gulf, and as director of the Metro-politan Life and the Federal Reserve Bank, was freely placed at the service of the Club. It was equally char- acteristic that the generosity that financed the Red Cross Mission to Russia inspired the use of the Club funds for Belgian and war relief. "W. B.," as he is known to his many friends, was born at Virginia City in Alder Gulch, Mont., on May 13, 1869. His father, William Thompson, born at Cobourg, Ont., had drifted into the old Northwest and, hearing at Yankton of the gold strike at Bannack, crossed the plains on the Oregon trail in the summer of 1863, arriv-ing in Alder Gulch at the inception of a mining boom that lasted several years, during which something like $60,000,000 in gold was yielded by the placer diggings. His mother was a daughter of Maj. James R. Boyce, Sr., from Logan County, Ky., who had served under General Sterling Price of the Confederate Army. Major Boyce's ancestors were early settlers of the Old Dominion, and his grandfather had seen military service in the war for American independence. Major Boyce's mother was a descendant of the Marshall and Smith families of Westmoreland County, Va. When Thompson was eleven years old, the family moved to Butte, then a silver camp. He attended the public schools of Butte, but desiring a better education, entered Phillips Exeter Academy and later the Colum-bia School of Mines. Returning West, for a year or two he ran the Boulder Chief mine near Basin, Mont., which earned him a sobriquet, "Boulder Thompson." While here, some old ore sacks, oil-soaked, introduced him to flotation. He was also the first to leach some of the ore dumps of Butte.

The Ch-H phase diagram was determined for by-drogen concentrations up to ChHo.9 at temperatures below 400°P'. The phase diagram includes a mis-cibility gap and a eutectoid transformation. A peri-tectoid transformation is postulated at the hydrogen-rich end of the diagram, Phase diagrams were determined for two levels oj purity, of the columbium. A single solid solution exists in the Cb-H system above 400°F. There has been considcrable disagreement among investigators concerning the system at temperatures below 400°F. Albrecht, Goode, and ~allett' proposed a miscibility gap containing two bcc phases with the two lattice parameters converging at about 140°C (285-F), and Brauer and ~erman' found a two-phase room-temperature region between 10 and 41 at. pct H. At sufficiently high hydrogen concentrations in the one-phase region, the hydrogen-rich phase was found to be face-centered orthorhombic. Wainwright, Cook, and Hopkills3 recently reported that the face centered orthorhombic hydride phase is derived from a unit cell which is slightly tetragonal with a small departure from 90 deg of the angle (y) opposite the r axis. The orthorhombic hydride phase was observed for hydrogen concentrations between 0.2 and 0.8 H/Cb atom ratio. Paxton and coworkers4 found that needlelike hydride plates formed in a hydrogen-charged columbium single crystal and suggested that this transformation possessed the characteristics of a diffusionless phase transformation. On the basis of room-temperature, X-ray diffraction data, komjathy' suggested that an order-disorder or martensitic transformation occurs. In the present study, the Cb-H system was investigated to resolve the discrepancies found in the literature for this system. PROCEDURE The columbium specimens were prepared from two heats of wrought 1/2-in.-diameter electron-beam melted columbium rod and from two columbium powders of -80 mesh size of different impurity contents. The columbium bar stock was pur chased from Urah Chmg Corp.; the 99 and 99.5 pct purity colulnbium powders were obtained from Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. and Kern Chemical Co.. respectively. The chemical analyses of the columbium bar and powders are listed in Table I. Hydrogen charging was performed by exposing the columbium specimens to hydrogen at 1 atm pressure at various temperatures. After exposure the specimens were quenched to prevent the hydrogen pickup which would take place if cooled in hydrogen, or the hydrogen loss that would occur if cooled in an inert gas. Adequate hydrogen purity was achieved by passing high-purity tank hydrogen (maximum 5 ppm total impurities) through an Engelhard catalytic Deoxo unit, magnesium per chlorate desiccant, and finally through activated charcoal at the temperature of boiling nitrogen. Activated charcoal at -321°F has been reported6 to remove impurities from hydrogen to a nondetectable level. A schematic representation of the heat-treating apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. IN their recent complete review of the subject of age-hardening,1 R. F. Mehl and L. K. Jetter classify the main types of precipitation-hardening alloys under two headings, depending upon the nature of the precipitate and the character of the precipitation. In the alloys falling under the first heading, which display "continuous precipitation" and are typified by the aluminum-copper alloys, "precipitation seems to occur without much regard to grain boundaries and apparently at much the same rate at every point," although an acceleration in regions plas-tically deformed has definitely been established .2 In the second type of alloys the precipitation is "discontinuous," as in the copper-silver system for example, and "seems to start in restricted regions, primarily those contiguous with the grain boundaries, and to spread inward in an advanc-ing wave." The reasons for the occurrence of these two greatly different types of precipitation are unknown, as are those for many other reactions that take place in the solid state. In the present paper only the first or "continuous" type of precipita-tion will be dealt with, for which a complete crystallographic mechanism has been worked out for the process of precipitation from a supersaturated solid solution of copper in aluminum. Based upon this mechanism, an explanation of the various property changes found experimentally will be developed in the second paper of this series. In later papers "dis-continuous precipitation" in copper-silver alloys will be explained, and an effort will be made to rationalize the two processes and types of precipitation.

Meetings of this committee were held at the Institute headquarters on April 18, May 2 and 15, and June 19. At the meeting of June 19, the Secretary reported that letters of invitation to apply for membership in the Institute had been sent to all the alumni of the School of Mines of Columbia University and also to all State Mine Inspectors and their deputies. He also reported the securing of lists of the alumni of the Harvard Engineering Schools, and of the Mining Schools at Houghton, Mich. ; Butte, Mont. ; State College, Pa.. ; Seattle, Wash.; Fayetteville, Ark. Laramie, Wyo.; Montreal, Canada, and Worcester and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institutes. Arrangements were made to invite all these to join the Institute. It. was suggested that a member of the Institute resident in Australia be appointed to this Committee, also one from Japan. Attention of the members of the Committee was drawn to the fact that letters requesting others to join the Institute will be written in the offices of the Institute if desired. In a recent study1 this author has investigated the effect of an electric field upon the solute redistribution accompanying solidification of Sn-Bi alloys. It was concluded that the primary effect of the electric current upon the solute redistribution resulted from electrotransport within the liquid boundary layer at the solid-liquid interface. In order to maximize the electrotransport effect all of the experiments were conducted at the highest current densities experimentally attainable. It was found that these high current densities produced considerable convective mixing within the liquid metal. This mixing reduces the boundary layer thickness and consequently reduces the effectiveness of the electric field in producing solute redistribution. Consequently, it is quite possible that the condition of maximum achievable current density would not correspond to maximum solute redistribution. It may be that, as the field intensity is increased, a point is reached where the additional solute redistribution from the increased electrotransport is more than offset by the decrease in solute redistribution resulting from the increased mixing in the liquid. In order to check this possibility the effective distribution coefficient has been determined as a function of current density in a series of experiments. The opening of a new large-scale beneficiation plant is always news, but the start-up of Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co.'s Eagle Mills near Ishpeming in Michigan's Upper Peninsula early in October is of particular interest because of the completely different type of operation being carried on at this plant. The ore boat which left Marquette, Mich. on the 3rd of October bound for the plant of Wisconsin Steel Division of International Harvester, not only carried the first output of this new mill, but also carried the first agglomerate made from the Upper Peninsula's jasper ore, the first commercial output from an updraft traveling-grate furnace, and the first large-scale commercial application of the balling disk, also called the flying saucer, to the agglomeration of an iron flotation concentrate.

THE present work was carried out as part of a general program to study the magnitude and concentration dependence of exothermic heats of solution of various metals in liquid tin. Thermodynamic data for the Te-Sn system are very limited, particularly for dilute alloys. Indeed, apart from the prior heat of solution determinations of Pool,1 the only other published values are those of McAteer and seltz2 who carried out electromotive force measurements on solid alloys of compositions from 75 to 95 at. pct Te at temperatures between 543° and 668° K, of Colin and Dro-wart3 who made mass-spectrometric studies of the vapor in equilibrium with solid SnTe, and of Robinson and Bever4 who determined the heat of formation of SnTe by solution calorimetry. The present work thus provides further thermodynamic information for this system, specifically in a temperature range where the solubility of tellurium is very limited. The liquid metal solution calorimeter used in this investigation has been described previously.' No further discussion of its design or operation will therefore be given here. For each series of measurements a tin bath consisting of approximately 70 g of 99.99 pct pure Sn was carefully weighed out and inserted in the calorimeter which was maintained at the desired temperature to within ± 1/4°c. Tellurium, of 99.999 pct purity, was supplied by Atomergic Chemetals Co., a division of Gallard-Schlesinger Chemical Manufacturing Corp. Approximately 0.0006 to 0.001 g-atom specimens of tellurium were used for each experimental run and these were added to the calorimeter from a temperature of 273" K. Heat of solution values were calculated by analysis of a strip-chart recorder plot of the heat effect accompanying the solution of each sample in the tin bath. The heat capacity of the latter was determined at regular intervals during a series of tellurium drops by using pure tin or tungsten calibration samples, the heat contents of which were obtained from the standard compilation of Hultgren et al5 The composition of the bath was calculated after each drop from a knowledge of the weights of tin and tellurium added. Values of the heat of solution of tellurium at 725" and 775° K are listed in Table I together with the corresponding tellurium contents of the alloys. The data are also plotted as a function of tellurium concentration in Fig. 1, which includes the equivalent data obtained by pool' at 750° K. It can be seen that the heat of solution remains

It has been known for some time that there was some relation, but it has been but recently. that careful study has been given to this subject. Like all the criteria used in this district, this relationship must be used with caution, for what-is true in one part of the district is not necessarily true in another.

One of the results of the work of the Committee on Precious and Base Metals is that the present Bulletin is as large as some of. the annual volumes of Transactions of the Institute, and we extend our. compliments and thanks to the Committee and express to the members thereof and to. the authors, who have so bounteously given of their time and information, the. sincere gratitude of the Institute. In order to get all these papers printed and distributed to the membership in advance of the meeting, it was necessary to divide the work between two printers. This accounts for the discrepancy in the pagination of the Bulletin; and we also ask the indulgence of our readers in case errors have crept into this preliminary edition during the period of unusual pressure. Program of the Butte Meeting.-The program of the Butte meeting will include six technical sessions for the presentation and discussion of papers and five half-clay visits to mines and metallurgical works. The following program is practically in final form, with slight additions which may be necessary later. Every effort will be made to have papers presented and discussed on scheduled time, so that members who are unable to attend the entire meeting may so plan their trip as to hear and discuss papers in which they are especially interested.

The results of an extensive experimental program relating to the effectiveness of gravel screens have been correlated. The factors considered in some detail include gravel size and condition of packing, sand size and size distribution, fluid velocity, fluid viscosity, and thickness and arrangement of grave! screens. Good agreement between calculated values based upon probability considerations and experimental results relating to the influence of the thickness of the gravel screen was obtained. All of these factors are treated in the correlation in order that their influence may be taken into account in ascertaining the characteristics of an effective gravel screen for a particular set of conditions. The details of the experimental program are not given in the present paper but a description of generalized behavior and typical experimental results are recorded in graphic form. Introduction Gravel screens have been placed in water and oil wells for a number of yearsl,2,3 with the dual objective of increasing the productivity and decreasing the entrance of sand into the well bore. An understanding of the factors controlling the effectiveness of gravel screens in this connection is of industrial interest because it will lead to the proper selection of gravel. Some of the fundamental considerations involved in the migration of sand through a coarser body of porous materials were investigated by Coberly and Wagner4 and further experimental work has been carried out by Gumpertz.5 Apparently the pertinent phenomena are somewhat complex and are influenced by many variables. The present paper deals with the prediction of the behavior of gravel screens under the conditions encountered in practice but does not attempt to discuss the experimental methods or results that were obtained as a background and upon which the prediction is based. Influence OF Gravel Screens upon Productivity The use of a gravel screen may increase the productivity of a well by increasing its effective diameter, and this constitutes one of the objectives of its use. The permeability of most gravels and coarse sands that are employed in practice is so large compared to that of the sand in place that relatively little loss in production rate will arise from the use of material fine enough to cause the desired resistance to sand migration. For example, in Fig. I is depicted the approximate variation in the permeability of closely sized spherical gravels under the conditions of packing likely to be encountered in screens. The dotted lines indicate the variation that might be found because of differences in packing. It should be realized that the permeability is not a single-valued function of the average grain diameter but is related to a large number of factors, including the size, the size distribution and the shapes of the particles. However, Fig. I does permit a rough estimation of the permeability of closely sized spherical gravels and shows that the permeability with even the smaller particles is very large compared to that of most petroleum production horizons.

IF IT IS true that Sir Walter Raleigh lost his head for his failure to find gold in the Guianas, the trumped up charge of "treason" might better have been "con-tributory negligence." That systematic investigation and development of the gold-bearing areas of both Dutch and French Guiana have not been accomplished is not due so much to the lack of gold as to the geo-graphical, physical and climatic conditions of the two colonies. The Dutch, as a people, are not prospectors. The French look upon "Cayenne," or French Guiana, as DJOEKA BOATS USED IN RIVER TRANSPORTATION. just what it is: a penal colony, which produces a certain amount of balata, gold and essential oils, all of which can be purchased from the natives with far less physical exertion than they can be secured from the "bush" or jungle. The colonies have had their gold "booms," and dur-ing these periods the production has increased to a considerable amount, but the hardships to be endured in reaching the fields, the cost of transporting tools and supplies, the ever-present fevers, the bite of the "57 varieties" of insects and, lastly but not leastly, the abundance of rum in the seaport towns, dampen the ardor of even the strongest; the production of gold is left to the "pork knocker" or illegal gold digger and to the comparatively few producing "mines."

ThE Golden Cycle Mining and Reduction Co. operates its custom mill at Colorado Springs on Cripple Creek ores exclusively. These ores are straight sulfo-tellurides, with practically no base metals such as Pb, CU, Zn, As, or Sb. Upon entering the mill, the ore all passes through the sampler to storage bins, where beds of 5000 tons each are made to insure uniformity in roasting. Classification of ORes For efficiency, it has been found advisable to separate the ores into two classes according to their lime content. Other constituents have their effect, such as alumina and magnesia, but, speaking generally, these are roughly proportional to the lime, which, as CaO, is used as the indicator. Class A contains not more than 2 per cent. CaO and comprises about 66 per cent. of the ore treated. Class B contains over 2 per cent. CaO, and comprises 34 per cent. of the ore treated. Each roaster will handle 50 per cent. more of class A ore than of class B, with practically the same results. This necessitates changing the rate of feed for each new bed and tends toward a poor roast and loss of tonnage at each change.

When a furnace-manager is '(blowing in," he generally has no time to consider the composition of the waste gas, and does not bother with it, except to take care that he does not get " gassed." Moreover, the analysis of the gases while the wood is still burning has not much to do with the economy of the normal working of the furnace; yet, on account of the deadly effects of the " blowing-in " gas when inhaled, and of its high explosive qualities, it is interesting to know its composition. ACCORDING to recently published statistics, it is predicted that as much oil must be produced during the next 16 years as has been produced during the past 75, in order to satisfy the high rate of consumption of petroleum products. During 1934, over 17,000 oil wells were completed in the United States, and it is expected that over 20,000 additional wells will be drilled during the current year. Were it not for the remarkable progress made during recent years in the improvement of drilling technique and in the development of equipment used in the production phase of the oil industry, it is doubtful whether sufficient oil could be produced to meet present requirements. A few years ago, wells seldom were deeper than 3500 to 4000 ft., owing to the limitations of the drilling methods and equipment employed.. Today, 'however, through the application of scientific drilling methods and the adaptation of modern equipment and improved materials, many wells range from 6000 to 8000 ft. in depth, and a few recent completions exceed 10,000 feet. DRILL TOOLS Modern rotary drilling tools are the product of ingenious design and careful selection and adaptation of materials used in their construction. They must withstand terrific abrasion and, because of their compactness, must be designed to resist exceedingly high unit stresses. A decision was made by the management of International Salt Co. in 1960 to eliminate all waste products which were entering the waters of Lake Seneca. This was to be accomplished by the injection of waste slurries into an abandoned brine cavity. The effluent from the cavity was to be treated and used for the manufacture of salt or disposed by deep well injection into the Cherry Valley limestone. After several years of research and design, a construction permit was granted by the state of New York; the injection, recovery, and disposal wells were constructed and after a public hearing an operational permit was issued. A summary of the operational results of the system is given.

IN this paper I shall attempt a description of the successful extraction of coal from this property after it had been on fire for probably fifty years, or more, and after attempts, made at various times, which had still left considerable coal behind. The Richmond coal-field has a well-founded bad reputation, arising from the circumstance that many of its collieries have had to be abandoned, from time to time, if not entirely, on account of fires, caused by spontaneous combustion, to which the character of the coal in this field renders them peculiarly liable. While I fully assent to the opinion that this trouble lies in the nature of the coal, which is highly bituminous, and the seams of which are, moreover, divided by slaty bands, through which, as also in the coal, iron pyrites is more or less disseminated, often in microscopically small particles, I must, nevertheless, declare that many lamentable disasters, causing great loss of life and property, could have been avoided if a suitable system of mining had been pursued in all the collieries. If this could not have been done from the beginning of mining in this section of country (the history of which can be traced back to over one hundred years), at least experience enough existed upon this subject thirty and forty years ago to dictate the avoidance of the dangers to a considerable extent. It is therefore necessary here to refer first, in a few remarks, to the character of the coal deposits, particularly in this immediate neighborhood, the Midlothian being one of the oldest and most extensive mines, and some of its coal being much subjected to spontaneous combustion. I must also refer to the history of former managements to explain more clearly the results which were arrived at. An address before the Meeting of the New York Section, Nov. 4, 1914. As life advances one is inclined to look backward instead of forward, and the vista over which my memory carries me has been filled with such a shifting panorama of changes in metallurgy that the whole practice of the art seems to have been re-created. The first cupola furnace that I saw in operation was at one of the group of mines at Capelton, Quebec, from which the Nichols company still draws some of its sulphur supply. At that time it was operated by a Hartford, Conn., company, under a General Adams. When its small brick furnaces made a campaign of a week and smelted 10 tons a day, the feat redounded to the credit of the operator. The introduction of the water-jacketed cupola dates forward to the next decade. I was using one in Pennsylvania, making copper matte, to the horror of a noted metallurgist, who could not conceive it possible that you. could bring fused sulphides in contact with steel without rapid corrosion. In our ignorance we were doing what seemed to be an impossibility, and it is just that recklessness and disregard for precedent which has characterized so much of the work of American metallurgists, and carried us forward at such headlong speed. Once the water jacket was accepted as the type of the. copper cupola, its almost unlimited expansion in length, but not in width, was a matter of convenience rather than of skill. In Butte the cupolas have been enlarged by adding furnace to furnace. The first reverberatories which I saw in operation were those in Professor Hill's Black Hawk establishment, where the concentrates from the Gilpin County gold mills were run down into matte for separation in England. Sixty dollars per ton was the usual deduction in those days before gold and silver was paid for. Smelting was done with wood as fuel, and the capacity of the furnace was about 10 tons per diem. Shortly after this Professor Hill formed an alliance with Richard Pearce, who was running what, if I recollect aright, was called the Swansea Works, at the bend of the river approaching Georgetown.
