AT Dominion Steel & Coal Corp. it has long been recognized that continued mechanization of mine operations is necessary in the Pictou, Cumberland, and Sidney coal fields of Nova Scotia. The varied physical conditions in these fields call for special consideration of individual cases before planning is finalized. Because standard equipment cannot be procured which would operate successfully, many experiments have been necessary over the years to keep pace with the progress made in other countries. There are two mines, producing 2000 tpd, located in the Pictou coal field. The field is badly distorted and crossed by many faults. Seams are highly inclined and irregular and vary in thickness from 5 to 40 ft. Entries are difficult to maintain because of squeezing of the coal. ribs and movement of the roof and pavement. Output from the three operating mines in the Cumberland field is 3000 tpd. The field is highly inclined, inclination varying from 12° to 32°. Overlying beds consist of shales and massive sandstone lenses of extreme toughness and are responsible for bumps when the stresses are relieved by extraction. At greatest depth these are among the deepest coal workings in the world. Depth of cover ranges from 2300 to 4000 ft. This prohibits room-and-pillar working and necessitates longwall operation. Working of contiguous seams concurrently to maintain output increases the already difficult conditions. The Sydney field, with a frontage of about 30 miles, is the most important of the Nova Scotia coal fields. With the exception of one small area it is now wholly submarine. Output is approximately 21,000 tpd. Seams are 21/2 to 8 ft thick, and cover in the areas varies from 600 to 2300 ft, with an average of 1500 ft from sea bottom to the top of the seam. The seams dip in a seaward direction, pitches ranging from 6" to 4.0". The shoreline is the last place of entry to the seams and distance from the bank to the working faces is generally over 3½ miles, in some cases as much as 6½ miles. Ventilation is a problem and requires the construction of large permanent airways. Getting and Loading Coal: In 1925, in view of heavy pressures exerted by thickness of cover overlying the seams, roadways and pillars of the room-and-pillar system being worked began to break up and coal was lost. It was decided that a change in the method of extraction in areas with heavy cover was necessary, and experiments were made with many short walls and longwalls varying between 90 and 250 ft. Trial and error proved that the best operating length was between 400 and 500 ft, delivering all coal to the dip, with roadways to the face following a level course. The change-over was gradual, and the technique of roof control developed with the system, so that falls to the face are now very infrequent. An advantage of longwall mining is that it yields 95 pct extraction, especially important in coal seams of high quality or in seams where faults or disturbances restrict the workable areas. This percentage of extraction is based on the fact that the longwall advancing system takes development faces where pitch permits instead of driving headings and leaving roadway pillars. This system yields high tonnage during development and limits loss in extraction to duff left during operations. Accompanying disadvantages, on the other hand, are the heavy construction cost of main roadways and the necessity of driving all new flank face roadways through the gob. If the main roadways are driven through the solid, and large enough pillars are left on each side for protection against flank face weights, then the width of solid coal is approximately 1700 ft. This represents 10.6 pct of the coal available, or 89.4 pct extraction of the whole. These pillars, however, are of such size that they provide a useful pillar drawing area as a final operation of the mine. Time and experience have demonstrated that by means of the Waelz process zinc, lead, cadmium, arsenic, antimony, bismuth and tin can be volatilized satisfactorily. In this way difficult gold ores are being treated to allow for the recovery of the precious metal. Iron ore containing zinc is being treated to remove the zinc and recover the iron. In Germany, thallium is being recovered in commercial quantities from the zinc oxide fume; indium, germanium and gallium are also concentrated to a degree warranting recovery, even though these rare metals are only recognizable in the ore by means of the spectroscope. The physical, chemical or mineralogical condition of the raw material affects very little the applicability of the process. The name Waelz is derived from the German word Waelzen, meaning a "trundling motion," which very aptly describes the movement of the charge through the slowly rotating kiln. The recovery of zinc and lead by volatilization in a rotary kiln has its origin in a process patented in 1910 by Edward Dedolph, of British Columbia. The Dedolph patent was taken over by the Metallgesell-schaft of Frankfurt-on-Main, Germany, which in cooperation with the Griesheim-Elektron, now a part of a large industrial combine, introduced certain improvements (Ohlmer, Specketer patents), but without bringing the process to a state suitable for large-scale operations. The war temporarily stopped all work on the process, and it was not until after the war that the Krupp Grusonwerk, of Magdeburg-Buckau, Germany, quite independently of the Metallgesellschaft, instituted research work in this field of metallurgy, which in 1923 led to the Waelz process proper. The Krupp Grusonwerk and the Metallgesellschaft A.G. later on collaborated, and by their joint efforts further developed and perfected the Waelz process, which they are marketing together as "Waelz-Gemeinschaft." The process is capable of treating a varied type of material; for instance, oxidized and sulphide zinc ores, calamine (zinc carbonate ore) waste dumps, jig tailings, jig slimes, table concentrate slimes, brass ashes, zinc-bearing iron ores (where the iron sinter is the real objective and the zinc oxide a by-product), electrolytic-zinc leach residues, zinc muffle residues and works sweepings, lead-furnace slags, tin ores and slags, anti-

Coal has been fighting a rear-guard action since the last World War. The battle against competitive fuels has been largely guerilla warfare with more sniping within the ranks than of organized opposition. Oil and natural gas are the fuels that over these twenty odd years have driven coal backward and out of many profitable markets. Now, somewhat timidly, the coal industry is trying a new weapon; namely, Research, or let us more properly say, Organized Research. Engineers have been designing this weapon for many years, supported by those interested in coal, including some coal producers. A part of this pioneer work has been Fundamental Research, the Ph.D. kind that is over the heads of most of us. Another part has been aimed at immediate objectives and realizable profits, the practical, man-in-the-street sort. That is Industrial Research. Enough has been accomplished to make a fair exhibit, but whether this new weapon will have sufficient fire power to rout the opposition, whether the industry will really go into production and use it, the next few years will tell. Need foR Coal Research To utter "Research" is to use the modern magic word; to conjure up the miraculous—rubber from weeds; radar; magnesium from sea water; yes, even gasoline from coal. Research is a very general term. It means something different to every man. What is the coal industry seeking with its research; or what should it seek? And, specifically, how is it going about the job; and is it taking the best way? There are many who say that Coal has been asleep at the switch, while Oil and Gas have been taking the energy business. In an organized way this is true. Large-scale, privatelyfinanced research is just started in the Pennsylvania anthracite industry, and it is still a dream for bituminous coal. What has been done so far collectively is purely defensive; as, for instance, to improve mechanical devices for burning coal so as to be able to recover markets for house-heating fuel long since abandoned to oil and gas. To appreciate just how seriously bituminous coal has slipped back in the national economy in the past 2 5 years, one has only to recall that, in the last war the Navy required for its operations all the high-grade, low-volatile coal that could be produced, and that anthracite was withdrawn from the middle and northwest markets to keep the eastern seaboard warm. All coal was "rationed" by zones, if not to individuals. Now the Navy, the Armed forces and the Merchant Marine are propelled by oil and gasoline. Gasoline and heating oil are rationed to individuals. Production of all coal in this country in 1918 reached the historic figure of 678,200,-000 tons, and in 1943, after 25 years, it is expected to reach a special wartime total of 660,000,000 tons. Meanwhile, production of crude oil this year may exceed 1 ,500,000,000 bbl., and like that of natural gas, reach four times the amount produced in 1918.

THE literature of geophysics as applied to the discovery of mineral deposits has been very extensive during the past few years,1 but there seem to be few references to the use of the method of least squares for obtaining better interpretations of the observed data .2 There seems to be a general reluctance among geologists and engineers to acquire the technique of least squares, in spite of the fact that a thorough knowledge of the theory is not necessary for the use of the method.

Joseph K. Stone, Jr. (Kaiser Engineers, Oakland, Calif.)—I would like to compliment the authors on their clear presentation of the results of their study of the pneumatic processes. We hope that the Inland Management decision to make this information available to all will induce others to release additional valuable fundamental data which they have accumulated in the field. There are two points upon which we would like to comment. In the discussion of Table VII it was indicated that the "oxygen consumptions were about the same as has been reported for other oxygen steelmaking processes". This conclusion is apparently based upon the consumption of 2100 cu ft per ton shown in Table VII. The data in Table IV also permits calculation of 2520, 2280, 2250 and 2700 cu ft per ton in heats 1 to 4, respectively. These figures are in the same general range as those reported for the Kal-Do and Rotor Processes using Thomas iron, but considerably above the following figures for four of the operating L-D Process Plants while using iron which is similar to American basic iron: Donawitz 1760 cu ft per ton Adapted from Cuscoleca' LinZ 1900 cu ft per ton Trenkler & Hauttmann2 Dofasco 1850 cu ft per ton D. The natural emulsion samples used in this study were shipped directly from twelve California oil fields, through the courtesy of the superintendents of the main producing companies in those fields. Representative parts of each sample were chosen for the slides. Preparation of the slides was generally made in less than two minutes, including time of exposure; in a few cases, about five minutes was required. The short time was intended to minirmize the changes in conditions. Whenever comparison was of value, standard conditions were established. Spreading by gravity was adopted instead of smearing. Cover glasses were not allowed to rest on the films. General Characteristics of Emulsions The main purpose of the general views (Figs. 1-16) is to illustrate the general characteristics of the dispersed droplets together with any other constituent or impurity that may be found in each emulsion. The magnification is given so that dimensions could be measured from the plates. The slides used for these views had spherical recesses; they gave the best light. Where crystals were intended to be shown in the picture a filter (green was the best') was usually used. Emulsions that showed a tendency to move by concentrated light were pictured without a condenser.

The four nomograms presented in this article were designed to simplify and make more rapid the calculations connected with the compression and transmission of air. The formulae involved are rather complicated, but the graphic solutions are simple; their use requires an ability to follow explicit directions and to interpolate values on a logarithmic sca1e. † For the sake of convenience, the nomograms will be divided into two classes, and the purpose and accuracy of each will be discussed. Power foR CompREssion It is frequently desirable to determine the horsepower necessary to compress a given amount of free air from atmospheric pressure to a certain final pressure. The nomograms in Fig. 1 and 2 present a rapid method of calculating the horsepower required to compress 1 cu. ft. of free air per minute by single or two-stage compression. The general formula for the horsepower required to compress air adiabatically is: S X 144 PVn [(P')n-1/sn -1 (1) where: P = absolute atmospheric pressure at compressor, in pounds per square inch. P' = final absolute pressure of compressed air, -in pounds per square inch. V = volume of free air compressed per minute, in cubic feet. S = number of stages. n = exponent of the compression curve.

A series of studies has been carried out at a shortwall panel to develop the methods of monitoring support resistance and determining load density of the chocks. THE methods that may be applied to the treatment of slurries and water, as these are related to practical coal-preparation problems, are concerned essentially with the movements of solids suspended in water. It is assumed that there are no fundamental differences between the principles involved in the treatment of coal slurries and the phenomena encountered in general mineral-dressing practice, and the latter are-presented in some detail. Basic principles are correlated with present practice for both the anthracite and the bituminous coal fields, and methods are discussed which are designed to utilize best all the material subjected to treatment and suggest a sound approach to the solution of problems relating to the return of clear water to process or to streams. In order to approach the practical phases of the subject with sufficient understanding of the basic principles, it is necessary to discuss two types of phenomena that are applicable. The first is flocculation and the second is sedimentation. Descriptive matter is given covering the various methods and types of equipment employed to conduct these operations, with emphasis on their application to water and coal-slurry treatment. DEFINITION OF TERMS Definitions of terms are consistent with modern developments, and conform, in general, with their usage in mineral-dressing practice. Because of variations in coal-preparation methods, it is impossible to define a rigid upper limit of particle size for a coal slurry or sludge which will apply generally. Limits vary somewhat with the particular treatment method employed at a given plant. For purposes of definition, this limit is chosen as the particle size for which preparation methods such as Chance comes and jigs are usually dispensed with, and other methods, such as the Hydro-tator, tables, and froth flotation, are employed. Generally the limit will be 10 to 6 mesh.

WITH capacity of 51,000 tpd, the Morenci concentrator produces approximately 49,000 tons of tailing for final deposition. Disposal involves distribution of thickened tailing to dams in such a manner that solids can be used for dam construction and water can be impounded for reclamation. During early operation, although tonnage treated was lower, it was necessary to use orthodox disposal practices in the areas available for tailing. Trestles mounted on a series of dams, constructed of borrow material, carried the pipelines from which tailing were spigoted behind the dams. When adequate disposal areas were finally established, it became desirable to look for more efficient methods. The idea of placing the distribution pipe or manifold directly on the crest of the dam was advanced in 1945. After a period of testing, that procedure in modified form replaced the older trestle arrangement. Marked economies resulted, and time required to prepare dams for succeeding storage cycles was greatly reduced. The tailing disposal area for the Morenci concentrator lies south and southwest of the concentrator building. Ample storage space is available. A wide valley contains three sharply defined ravines lying on an average slope of 4 pct. The more central of these ravines, and the largest of the three, is known as Morenci canyon, which provides substantially more tailing storage area than the other two. Stargo canyon lies to the west; the other is appropriately named East canyon. Total area of the tailing disposal site is nearly 31/4 sq miles, or about 2000 acres. The storage area in use was somewhat more than 850 acres at the end of 1954, or 16 acres per 1000 tons of tailing to be stored daily. At the present time none of the east side dams are in regular use but they are available in emergency. There are five dams on the west side (in Morenci and Stargo canyons) as well as two auxiliary dams adjacent to No. 4 West and No. 5 West. This has made it possible to concentrate men and equipment in a smaller area with consequent savings in both manpower and machinery. Tailing Thickening: Tailing from the flotation process reaches the thickeners with a solid content of about 18 pct. The launder carrying this pulp is subdivided at a central point into seven launders carrying a proportional share to each of seven tailing thickeners, which are located in Morenci canyon close to the concentrator. Five of these thickeners are 300 ft diam and two are 325 ft diam. Thickeners are of the peripheral traction type and rakes travel at the rate of one revolution in 37 to 39 min. The entire installation provides 500,000 sq ft of settling area, or approximately 101/2 sq ft per ton of tailing to be thickened daily.

He who enters a mining claim within an Indian reservation of the United States of America acquires no rights thereby, because of the fact that the lands within such Indian reservation are not a part of the public domain, and cannot be located or acquired as mineral land. However, where such an entry is authorized as to a particular reservation by an Act of Congress, such claims as may be ontered under such authorization are thereby segregated from the reservation, and the Indian title is oxtinguished. Under the Choctaw Constitution, any citizen of that nation, in other words any Choctaw Indian, who discovered a coal mine, acquired an exclusive right to all coal within a radius of 1 mile. The laws of the Chickasaw nation provided for the formation of corporations to develop coal and other mines, with authority to contract with others to develop and work the mines. Under these laws, leases were made; but Congress subsequently abrogated all existing leases, prohibited all persons from receiving royaltics from such mines, and provided that all coal within the nation should remain the common property of the tribes. , Such leases are now expressly prohibited by an Act of Congress (32 United States Statutes at Large, 655). All leases of mineral lands upon Indian reservations must now be made under regulations promulgated by the Secretary of the Interior, and the royalties must' be paid into the United States Treasury for the benefit of the tribes. In Canada the Indians have no rights to the royal mines and minerals, and the government can make no stipulation with the Indians which would affect the rights of the Province in which the lands are situated. Therefore, while it is true that under our present law no rights can be acquired to a mining claim within an Indian reservation, it seems to be fully within the authority of Congress to make laws, giving such rights to mineral locators as it may deem necessary or expedient. There is a demand for a general law that will permit mining upon Indian reservations, and I am informed that most of the members of both houses of Congress from the Western States are in favor of Congress pass-

Before 1957 a number of investigators reported stress determinations made on or near the surface of underground excavations. The usual procedure was to measure surface strains and to calculate the stresses using laboratory-determined values of the elastic constants of the rock. In some instances strain gages were stress-relieved so that the measured stress was absolute. Also, several investigators reported near-surface absolute stress determinations made by the flat-jack procedure. In 1958, Hast1 described a procedure for making absolute stress determinations within a body of rock. In this procedure a diametral deformation gage was placed in a borehole and then the borehole was overcored to produce stress relief. The secondary principal stresses in the plane normal to the axis of the borehole were calculated from measured deformations and the elastic constants of the rock. During the past nine years a number of investigations have been reported1-20 in which this technique, or modifications of it, have been reported. Both the stress distribution in the walls of underground openings and the stress field at points as great as 200 ft from these openings have been determined. Considered collectively, these reports shed some light on the nature of the stress distributions in the proximity of underground openings and on the stress field, that is, the state of stress outside of the zone of influence created by openings. To summarize these findings first consider the stress distribution in the wall and structural components of openings. Fig. 1 (a) shows a typical theoretical stress distribution curve in a linear-elastic, isotropic, homogeneous material. This paper presents some of the problems encountered and solved by the construction industry during recent years while pressure grouting the foundation rock of dams. Pressure grouting has become "Standard Operational Procedure" and consequently many hundreds of thousands of bags of cement have been used for that purpose. There is nothing weird, mystical, or even particularly difficult about the basic idea. Holes are drilled in the rock and grout is pumped into them. This procedure is used to shut off the flow of water under the dam and to reduce the uplift on the dam. Like most other engineering and construction problems, the fundamental principle is simplicity itself, but some of the "minor details" are rather complex. When faced with the problem of actually forcing the grout into the rock, or keeping it there once it has been injected, an engineer frequently has need for all of the ingenuity and initiative that he has at his disposal. It is proposed to discuss these minor details at length, even at the risk of boring the reader. The difference between success and failure in a grouting program can well hinge upon some such detail that may not be fully understood. Pressure grouting is a method used to make good foundations from bad ones by plugging actual or potential passages within the rock through which water might escape and thereby diminish or even destroy the usefulness of the dam. In some special cases, pressure grouting has been used for the purpose of consolidating broken rock to increase its bearing power. Lacking this useful method, many of the dams constructed during recent years could not have been built. Most of the really excellent dam sites in this country have been utilized long ago. Consequently it becomes necessary to find methods of utilizing the less desirable sites. Pressure grouting plays a vital role in the methods developed. Engineers have learned the hard way, that the term "solid rock" is a misnomer. Solid rock does not exist to any considerable extent in nature. Practically all rock contains imperfections such as shrinkage cracks, bedding planes, joints, solution channels, folds, shear zones, crush zones, and the like. All these imperfections are weaknesses through which ground water is likely to flow. The function of rock grouting is to rectify these imperfections and make the rock as nearly "solid" as practicable. The location, direction, depth and number of grout holes to be drilled are important. Clearly, a hole must pierce fractures in order to serve a useful purpose, for grout cannot be forced into the rock itself. Were it possible to determine the pattern and extent of the cracks within the rock, it might be feasible to drill two or three strategically placed holes so as to make practicable the grouting of the whole integrated network of cracks from them. Such is not the case. While a study of the geology, surface indications, and drill cores is helpful in gaining an idea of subsurface conditions, in the final analysis, the seams must be located by trial and error methods. The effects of crude oil cornponents on the wellabil-ities of sandstone and limestone were investigated. Fractions containing cornponents differing in molecular weight and molecular structure were obtained from crude oils by distillation, extration and chromatography. Individual fractions were then tested for their effects on rock wettability. Tests indicate that sundstone wetta-bility may he changed by a complex variety of surfactants varying both in molecular structure and molecular weight. Limestone appears to be particularly sensitive to basic, nitrogenous surfactants. INTRODUCTION Investigations in recent years have shown that petroleum reservoir rock wettability can exert a significant influence on the efficiency with which oil can be produced by water flooding. While most reservoirs are presumably water-wet, they niay range in their degree of water-wettability from near-neutral to strongly water-wet.'" Reservoir wettabilities other than strongly water-wet are likely to be induced by adsorption of surface-active components froni the crude oil on the pore walls of reservoir rock.:' Little is known, however, about the nature of the surface-active materials which are likely to be adsorbed by the reservoir rock. Due to the complexity of crude oils. attempts made in the past90 isolate these surface-active components have met with only limited success. It is probable that many different types of surface-active materials arc indigenous to crude oils and that many of these may be adsorbed to varying degrees by reservoir rock. This was cxolored in the studies discussed in this paper. The over-all objective in these studies is to ascertain whether the wettability of a given reservoir can be determined by examining the surfactant content of the reservoir crude. To this end, crude oils were examined to determine the variability of indigeneous surfactants with regard to chemical type and molecular weight. Crude oils were separated by distillation into fractions differing principally in molecular weight, by chroma-tography into fractions containing compounds differing in polarity, and by solvent extraction into nitrogenous and non-nitrogenous fractions. Individual fractions were then tested for their effects on the wettabilities of sandstone or limestone rock samples. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Fractionation of the Crude Oils Samples of Miocene, Eocene and Jurassic crudes were distilled at temperatures not exceeding 200°C. The final stages of distillation were completed in a molecular still at pressures down to three microns of mercury. Fifteen to 30 fractions were obtained from each crude oil. These cuts were sufficiently broad that separation can be considered to have been effected principally on the basis of the molecular weights of the constituents of the crude oil. A considerable portion (20 to 40 per cent) of the crudes would not distill under these conditions. The residues were recovered and tested with the other fractions. Fractions differing in polarity were separated from a crude of Pennsylvanian age and an extracted sample of Miocene oil by chromatography, using a solid adsorbent. Since surfactants are, for the most part, polar compounds, chromatography should separate many of the surfactants from the crude oil. Such a separation should provide fractions containing compounds differing in molecular structure. Nitrogeneous compounds were extracted from Miocene crude oil with a solution of sulfuric acid in meth-anol. The residual oil was further processed by chonia-tography. Each of the fractions obtained by thesc procedures was dissolved in a non-polar solvent (xylene) and diluted to its original concentration in the crude oil. No attempt was made to maintain an anaerobic atmosphere above the samples while they were being dissolved. These solutions of the fractions were then tested for their effects on the wettability of sandstone and limcstone as discussed in the next section. Measurement of the Effects of Crude Oil Fractions on Rock Wettability No entirely satisfactory method for measuring rock wettability has yet been developed. All methods used are empirical. The imbibition test was used in these studies. This test is based on the tendency of a rock to imbibe the wetting phase spontaneously. For example, if a strongly water-wet rock is first saturated with oil and then placed in water, the water will quickly invade the rock by capillarity and much of the oil will be displaced. If the rock is slightly water-wet, water irnbibition will proceed more slowly and, in many instances, considerably less oil will be displaced. A water-saturated, oil-wet rock will imbibe oil. The initial rate with which water (or oil) imbibition takes place indicates, qualitatively, the degree of water (or oil) wettability of the rock.

This paper discusses the metallurgical testing procedures and their applications at the laboratories and mills of Pima Mining Co. The author shows, using discussions and case histories, that routine sampling and evaluation of daily and monthly data can be as valuable as thorough laboratory investigations and mill test work. A great deal of valuable information can be made available this way. This paper discusses laboratory and mill metal-lurgical testing procedures and their applications at Pima Mining Co., located about 25 miles southwest of Tuscon, Ariz. The Company, incorporated in 1951 (the year the orebody was found) in California to operate the Pima mine, is jointly owned by Cyprus Mines Corp., Utah Contruction and Mining Co., and Union Oil Co. Milling started in December 1956. The main Pima orebody is a contact metamorphic vein of copper-bearing hornfels with an average dip of 45° to the south with an east-west strike. The hanging and footwalls are quartzitic pyroclastics (arkosite) containing some sulfides. Barren igneous intrusions are also present. Conglomerates and alluvial wash cover the deposit to a depth averaging about 200 ft. The principal copper mineral is chal-copyrite. Native copper, chalcocite, and minor amounts of chrysocolla and other copper minerals are also present, together with sphalerite and some molybdenite. Generally, it has been noted that the ratio of chalcocite to chalcopyrite is higher in the lower grade ores, while as the grade increases, there are only minor amounts of chalcocite. Open pit mining is employed at Pima, using both trucks and an inclined skiphoist system. A detailed description of Pima Mining Co. operations was presented by Spaulding et all. More recently another orebody to the north and east of the present pit has been discovered and will be placed in operation within a few years. This ore is of a porphyritic rather than a lode nature since values are disseminated in both igneous and metamor- phosed sedimentary rocks. The new orebody is expected to be harder and cleaner than the present deposit. PlMA MILL The following outline of milling practice is presented to furnish a background for later chapters of this report wherein specific problems will be detailed and analyzed. Run of mine ore is crushed in three stages, using conventional equipment to 85% minus 1/2-in. for feed to two 10 x l6-ft rod mills operating in open circuit. Each rod mill discharge is split between two 10% x 13-ft ball mills in closed circuit with three 20-in. cyclones. In addition, a 7 x 12-ft ball mill with one 20-in. cyclone receives part of the discharge from one of the rod mills. This equipment was manufactured by Allis Chalmers and Equipment Engineers. The cyclone overflows are combined, sampled and, after joining the regrind cyclone overflow, are distributed into 12 10-cell Fagergren 66-in. flotation machines. BARITE probably was first mined in the United States in 1845, when a small deposit was operated in Prince William County, Virginia1. The next state to produce barite was Missouri, and according to Weigel2, mining began about 1860. Virginia was the leading producer during the early period of barite mining, but by 1893, Missouri was producing almost an equal amount3. From this date, Virginia, although not the leading producer, furnished large quantities of crude barite until oper-ations gradually declined about 1907. Since 1910, there has been only one producer in Virginia. It is not known when barite was discovered in each of the Virginia areas (Fig. 1), but it is reliably reported that mining on a commercial scale began in Campbell-Pittsylvania counties about 1874; Smyth County in 1877; and in the Russell-Tazewell area about 1890. Barite is widely distributed in Virginia, occurring in nineteen counties. The localities that contain material of some economic value have been grouped into six areas (Fig. 1), each designated by the county or counties in which the barite is found. As many of the smaller areas show a similarity in geologic occurrence, they will be considered in this paper as two major groups; namely, Appalachian Valley and Piedmont Province. The first group, which includes the barite deposits of Russell, Tazewell, Smyth, Botetourt and Roanoke counties, lies northwest of the Blue Ridge and its foothills and southeast of the Appalachian plateaus. The other group includes deposits from the Blue Ridge on the west to the western margin of the Coastal Plain, in Campbell, Pittsylvania, Bedford, Grayson, and Fauquier counties.
