ALTHOUGH annealing twins are frequently observed in many fcc metals, their occurrence in aluminum is relatively rare. ~ahn' in his review of twinning has listed only a few references to observations of twins in aluminum, e.g., Refs. 2 and 3. They have also been shown to occur in evaporated aluminum layers.4 During the present work, several annealing twins were studied in aluminum. The specimens of 1099-grade aluminum had the following thermomechanical treatment: deformed 90 pct by rolling, partially re-crystallized, further deformed 60 pct to a final thickness of 100 p, then annealed for 24 hr at 120°C. This treatment produced several annealing twins—-about ten per electron microscope specimen. The specimens were produced by the window technique and examined in a Phillips E.M. 200 operating at 100 kv. A typical twin boundary is shown in Fig. 1. For several of the twins studied the twin plane could be tilted so that it was parallel to the electron beam, e.g., Fig. 2. The associated diffraction pattern, Fig. 3, shows the twinned relationship between the grains. The twinning plane in each case was (111). Use of a reflection common to both the twin and the matrix,* i.e., using reflecting planes parallel in the twin and the matrix, the coherent twin boundary becomes invisible and only the noncoherent segments of the stepped boundary are seen, e.g., Fig. 4. Trace analysis of the boundaries showed that the long straight portions were invariably the twin plane; i.e., these portions are coherent. The planes of the shorter segments are shown by Fig. 5 to be (551 1, (7111, and {211).

InteRmetallic compounds are formed in many binary metal systems. Some compounds are stable to their melting points, and others decompose at lower transition temperatures. Even those of the first class are dissociated in the liquid state, as indicated by the continuous form of their solubility curves at their melting points1. While the lattice structures of some of these compounds have been determined, their thermodynamic properties have not been investigated. In this paper is described the determination of the free energy and heat of formation of the compound CdSb, which is of the first class mentioned above, melting congruently at 455' C. This compound shows a rhombic structure, and the lengths of the edges of the elementary cell containing four molecules are: a = 6.52, b = 8.60, c = 4.16 A.' There are three possible methods of determining the free energy of formation of a compound of this type. The first method, applying the third law of thermodynamics, requires the measurement of its heat capacity preferably to liquid hydrogen temperatures, and a calorimetric determination of its heat of formation. The second method involves the study of the equilibrium of the compound in some gas reaction, such as: CdSb + CO² = CdO + CO + Sb From the known free energies of formation of CdO, CO² and CO the free energy of formation of CdSb could be calculated. The third method measures the electromotive force of a galvanic cell in which the cell reaction is the reversible formation of the compound from the elements. The first method is generally applicable, but requires elaborate experimental equipment. The second method can not be used for compounds melting at low temperatures, owing to the difficulty in establishing equilibrium. The electromotive force method, therefore, seemed to offer

"In the mines producing over 500 tons per day, skips have replaced the old method of hoisting ore by cars run onto cages. In the car and cage method, two men (station tenders) trammed the loaded cars onto the one-deck cage, and as the production increased the one-deck cage was increased to two decks and later to four decks. Landing chairs at the underground stations were necessary in this method and were the cause of many serious accidents by being carelessly left in the shaft by the station-tenders when leaving one station for anotherabove. The labor and time occupied in loading the leaving cages were con¬siderable, and, at times of rapid hoisting, four men were necessary in taking off empty and caging loaded cars. This also required at the surface landing, as many as ten men on a shift to remove the loaded cars and replacing them with empties, and tram the loaded ones to the surface ore bins, where the railway cars were loaded.The skips used in Butte are generally of 100 cubic feet capacity and hold five tons of ore, and weigh 7,500 lbs. The cage above, to which the skip is attached, weighs 2,300 lbs. The skips dump automatically into a pocket of 50 tons capacity. Two men are with the skips underground and load them from 125 ton capacity ore-pockets, under each station, the bottoms of the pockets having an inclination of 50 degrees from the horizontal. At the bottom of these pockets a gate is operated by compressed air. The labor of loading the skips amounts only to the opening and closing of a valve in the air-line, the ore running by gravity into the skips.Besides the saving in labor, the use of the skips has removed the necessity of underground landing chairs in the shaft and the accidents which are inevitable where such chairs are used."

No firms or supplies of dubious reputation are advertised in the Bulletin. If members, in buying any material, will refer to the advertisement of that material in the Bulletin, or if they do not find it advertised in the Bulletin, will, when ordering, ask the manufacturers why the goods were not advertised in the Institute publication, it will be of material benefit to all of us, because the chief reason why advertisers are unable to trace direct results is because purchasers do not mention the Bulletin when writing. Finally, if members, when in need of anything whatsoever, will write to the Institute headquarters, an effort will be made to send them a complete list of manufacturers able to supply the desired materials of good quality. The furnishing of these lists will be a benefit to our Advertising Department, as well as to the members. We need scarcely call attention to the advantages obtained by the members from the money which advertising brings in, because all this money is returned directly to the members in one form or another.

INTRODUCTION Though the use of continuous mining machines consolidated the operations of cutting, drilling, blasting, and loading in one machine that would theoretically provide uninterrupted production, it was soon realized that the face haulage and roof support operations remained as major impediments to continuous production. The ability to provide not only continuous cutting and loading, but also continuous haulage and roof support (see Fig. I), was the basis for the introduction of mechanized longwall systems in this country from Europe in 1951. The early systems employed friction props for roof support, but were to become obsolete shortly after introduction of the first hydraulically powered, self-advancing supports in 1960. Since then, use of the longwall technique has grown to the point where it is currently providing more than 5% of the annual output of underground coal mines in the United States. The shortwall system had its origin in Australia, but was first introduced into this country in 1962 following the development of powered roof supports. It, too, provides for continuous cutting, loading, and roof support (see Fig. 2), but has not experienced the widespread popularity of longwall due to its inherent inability to easily provide for continuous haulage. While there are in the neighborhood of 100 longwall systems currently in operation in this country, there are only a handful of short- wall operations providing production of slightly more than 907 184.7 t/a (1,000,000 stpy). Both of these systems provide uninterrupted roof support for face operations by means of hydraulically powered steel roof supports. In each case, the coal removal consists of open-end cuts made from the narrow end of a large rectangular pillar (panel) which has been blocked out by continuous miners developing entries around its perimeter. In March 1962, over three months ahead of schedule, production began from the Ventersdorp Contact Reef of the Western Deep Levels Ltd. mine on the West Witwatersrand. Few mines have captured the interest of mining men and the public as has Western Deep Levels. It has presented the gold mining industry with a challenge which involved the opening of an ultradeep mine with the attendant problems of exceptionally heavy capital commitments ($77 million to start of production), high rock temperatures and pressures at great depths, cementation and pumping in an area notorious for the volume of subsurface water, and the necessity for entirely new thinking and the application of new ideas. HISTORY Not all the problems facing Western Deep Levels were, however, new. Situated 43 miles from Johannesburg, just off the main road to Potchefstroom, Western Deep Levels was the sixth company to undertake mining operations on what is known as the West Wits line and it could draw on the wealth of experience gained by other pioneer mines in the area.

The Institute is represented on the boards of the John Fritz Medal, the Hoover Medal and the Washington Award, in connection with the three national societies of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering; and, also, in the case of the Washington Award, with the Western Society of Engineers. The Institute is represented with these four societies on the committee in charge of the Alfred Noble Prize.

This paper discusses the design and calibration of a Faraday pail for measuring electric charge. The paper also shows that at least for two minerals, quartz and calcite, the phenomenon that Johnson termed "reversibility" can be explained in terms of the contact electrification between the minerals and the metal rotor of an electrostatic machine. Each year the free world produces about 13 million tons of mineral concentrates by electrical separation. However, despite the rather general acceptance of electrical concentration as an industrial process, research in this area has lagged far behind the efforts devoted to competitive processes such as froth flotation. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design and calibration of a Faraday ice pail for measuring charge density on mineral grains and to show some of its applications in the area of electrostatic and electrodynamic research. THE DESIGN AND CALIBRATION OF FARADAY PAILS FOR ABSOLUTE CHARGE MEASUREMENT The electric charge on mineral grains at a given time during an electrical concentration process is de- pendent on many factors and cannot, in general, be accurately calculated a priori. It is thus important to devise a method of measuring absolute charge. One method of measuring electric charge is to note the potential rise of an electrometer when charged particles drop into a Faraday pail. Two types of Faraday pail have been constructed and calibrated. The first type, Faraday Pail I (Fig. 1), is a vertical pail originally designed to measure the charge due to contact electrification between mineral grains and a metal rotor or due to conductive induction when mineral grains are passed over a rotating cylinder in the presence of an electric field. The second type, labeled Faraday Pail II (Fig. 2), is a horizontal pail designed to determine the charge distribution of mineral grains after they pass through the separating zone of the electrical concentrator shown in Fig. 4. The main advantage of the horizontal pail is its low head-room requirement and the long opening which enables the experimenter to sample the entire width of the stream of minerals being separated. The Faraday pails were calibrated in the following manner: A calibration head was constructed in the form of a hollow brass sphere that could be held in an insulated metal cylinder by vacuum (Fig. 1). The capacitance of the sphere was calculated by measuring the capacitance of the sphere and cylinder combined and that of the cylinder alone and subtracting the latter measurement from the former. The sphere was then charged to a known potential (V) and allowed to drop into the Faraday pail which was attached to a Keithley Model 610A electrometer. STANDARD raises at Homestake are 150 ft long. Raises of more than 150 ft, driven with the use of a cage and hoist, are considered long raises- some have been driven more than 900 ft. Long raises have eliminated the need for access drifts on each level when transfer and ventilation raises are driven. These timbered cage raises, 7x9 ft in cross section, include a rock compartment and a combination cage, pipe, and manway compartment. To prevent excessive weight on the timbers, 10x10-in. bearing beams are cemented into hitches cut in the rock at 150-ft intervals. The beams also hold back timber movement caused by daily drawing of rock through the rock compartment.

since aluminum-alloy sheet may be used occasionally at moderately elevated ternperatures, the effects of temperature on the mechanical properties are of interest. Recently the short-time tensile properties of several high-strength materials have been studied at temperatures up to 3750°F.l This paper deals with stress-rupture and creep properties at the same temperatures. The work was done at the University of California as a portion of the project NRC-548. It was financed by the War Production Board and was supervised by the Office of Production Research and Development. This paper has been released for publication by the latter agency. The following materials were studied, all in the form of 0.040-in. sheet: Alclad 24s-T Alclad 24s-T8I Alclad 24s-T86 Alclad 75s-T R3oI-T (clad) Specimens were loaded in tension in the cross-grain direction. Testing temperatures included 94°F., 2II°F., 300°F., and 375°F. Stress levels were selected to cause rupture in times ranging from several minutes to 1000 hr. In each test the following data were obtained: (I) fracture time, (2) elongation at fracture, (3) the complete strain-versus-time curve (creep curve), (4) creep rate (defined in a later section). Current research in the phenomenon of liquefaction has indicated some of the in situ material properties which should be considered in the planning of waste deposits. Practical experience in tailings disposal, however, must be combined with the results of theoretical and laboratory studies to develop the most economical and safe techniques against liquefaction failure. One of the many responsibilities of mining engineers and mill superintendents is providing for the safe and economic disposal of wastes (or tailings) that remain after a mineral has been extracted from an ore. The cost of disposal of these tailings exerts a considerable influence on the minimum grade of ore extracted from the mine. It varies to a great extent with each project and is dependent on many diverse factors, such as the local topographical, meteorological and seismological conditions together with the applicable water pollution laws of the area. The process used to extract a mineral from an ore determines the physical characteristics of the tailings and, thus, is one of the more important factors to be considered in the planning of disposal facilities. Today's trends in ore-processing operations complicate the problems of waste disposal: recently developed extraction methods result in the production of finer tailings, the use of lower grade ores produces greater volumes of wastes, and the enhanced land values in the vicinity of industrial plants preclude the former practice of spreading wastes laterally and force the expansion of waste deposits upwards to greater heights. The frequent occurrence of stability problems in waste deposits indicates that many mining organizations may not be employing current soil mechanics concepts and practices. One of the most spectacular, and often most disastrous, types of tailings dike failure is that resulting from liquefaction of the fine particles combined with a breach of the main retaining dike. TAILINGS DISPOSAL Since the many variations in site conditions, ore bodies and extraction processes dictate the general disposal procedures and mill superintendents incorporate special facilities to provide the most economical disposal method consistent with accepted safety standards, it is only natural that there are almost as many different disposal techniques as there are disposal areas. Methods used in the construction of retaining dikes include: (1) transporting granular material from an adjacent borrow pit and (2) mechanically segregating the total effluent and allowing the coarse fraction to form a retaining dike by hydraulic deposition. The location of a plant and the surrounding topography exert the greatest influence on the layout of tailings disposal facilities. Most of the above-ground waste deposits can be classified as side-hill, (Fig. 1,) cross-valley, (Fig. 2,) or stockpile deposits. Side-hill disposal areas are probably the most common type of layout because of the natural advantage of gravity flow, without the disadvantage of river diversion usually needed for tailings ponds formed behind cross-valley dikes. Stockpiles, which are placed on relatively level ground, require four retaining dikes and the effluent generally has to be pumped up into the disposal area. Changing production techniques or developments adjacent to disposal areas have produced variations or partial combinations of these three categories. In a series of articles, Lenhart describes many of the problems encountered in the disposal of tailings and certain innovations used to overcome them. TROUGHS or launders are probably the oldest machines used for ore. concentration, and their development was suggested no doubt by the natural segregation and stratification of materials that take place in the bed of a stream. Trough washers for coal cleaning were first used in France and Germany about one hundred years ago and have been used in some form or other ever since. The early launders were intermittent or batch machines, and only comparatively recent developments have made them continuous. The chief disadvantage of early launder systems as applied to coal has been that when a satisfactorily clean: coal was produced the loss of good coal in the refuse was excessive. Other disadvantages have been the large quantities of water and the great lengths of troughs necessary to treat moderate tonnages of feed. One of the most widely used types of trough washers is the Rheolaveur, which has been developed in the last 25 years. Fig. 1 shows a more or less standard arrangement for fine coal. In this there are four troughs placed one below the other and sloped a few degrees from the horizontal. Rheo-boxes or draws are provided at intervals in the bottom of the trough for the removal of material deposited from the stream. These draws are spaced substantial distances apart. Some of the rheo-boxes are provided with upward currents of water to modify the horizontal current stratifica-tion. In operation it is the function of the first two troughs to remove all refuse material and permit only clean coal to be discharged over the end. In order to accomplish this, large quantities of coal are drawn through the rheo-boxes. The third and. fourth troughs are used to recover the coal discharged through the boxes of the first two troughs as a middling product and to discharge a clean refuse. The middlings are returned to the first launder and are usually about equal to 40 per cent of the raw coal being fed to the launder.

A capsule technique was successfully employed to investigate the effect of nickel on the activity of nitrogen in Fe-Ni-N austenite in the temperature range 600" to 1200°C. This technique consisted of equilibrating nitrogen among various Fe-Ni alloys within a sealed silica capsule. Nitrogen transfer among the specimens occurred by N, gas at 900°, lOOO? and 1200?C. Nitrogen gas pressures within the capsules were estimated to be as high as 22 atm. The activity coefficient of nitrogen, fN , in Fe-Ni-N austenite is adequately described by the linear interaction equation: log . wt pct Ni where the standard state is chosen such that fN = I as wt pct Napproaches zero in binary Fe-N. This relationship was determined over the temperature range 873" to 1473°K and for nickel contents of 0 to 35 wt pct. ALTHOUGH chemical thermodynamics of liquid iron alloys have been extensively studied, experimental data for the solid state are needed. These thermody-namic data will provide a basis for understanding phase transformations, precipitation reactions, metal-gas equilibria, and so forth. The interaction of sub-stitutional alloying elements with the interstitial elements is of particular interest. In this investigation the thermodynamic behavior of Fe-Ni-N austenite has been studied. The solubility of nitrogen gas in iron austenite is known to obey Sieverts&apos; law up to about 65 atm.1-6 In addition, the solubility of nitrogen in Fe-Ni austenite has been investigated5"8 using the classical method of equilibrating Fe-Ni alloys with nitrogen gas at 1 atm. A capsule technique similar to that used to study the activity of carbon in alloyed austeniteg&apos;&apos;&apos; was employed in the present work to determine the effect of nickel on the activity of nitrogen in Fe-Ni austenite over the temperature range 600" to 1200°C. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A series of Fe-Ni alloys up to 35 wt pct Ni was vacuum melted and cast into 1 by 3 by 6 in. ingots. Chemical analyses at the top and bottom of each ingot demonstrated that the ingots were homogeneous with respect to nickel content. The nickel contents are given in Table I. Additional chemical analyses showed that wt pct Si < 0.05, s < 0.01, C < 0.01, Al < 0.006, 0 < 0.004, Mn < 0.002, and P < 0.002. A 2 in. section of each ingot was cold rolled to 0.015 in. The material was then decarburized to a carbon content of less than 0.004 wt pct. A portion of the material of each nickel content was nitrided to various levels in a H2-NH3 gas atmosphere to provide a source of nitrogen during subsequent equilibration. The experimental technique consisted of equilibrating the series of Fe-Ni-N alloys in a partially evacuated sealed silica capsule at the temperature of interest. Both Vycor and quartz capsules were used. In general, the final equilibrium nitrogen content for each Fe-Ni alloy was approached from both higher and lower nitrogen levels. The criterion for establishing that equilibrium was attained was that the final nitrogen content for each Fe-Ni alloy was the same irrespective of the initial level. A schematic drawing of the sample configuration in a capsule is shown in Fig. 1. The samples were arranged so that there was a minimum of physical contact. The samples were also dusted with a fine, high purity alumina powder to help prevent sticking. Several different types of furnaces were used in this study. In each case, a thermocouple was placed immediately adjacent to the capsule during equilibration and the temperature was controlled to within *4?C of that reported. At each equilibration temperature, the following times were found to be more than sufficient to attain equilibrium: 600°C-250 hr, 900°C-150 hr, 1000°C-150 hr, and 1200°C-50 hr. After equilibration the capsules were quenched in water and the nitrogen contents of the specimens determined by a Strohlein analyzer. Analyses of samples after equilibration at 1000" and 1200°C showed no silicon pickup from the silica capsules. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Transfer Mechanism. The mechanism by which nitrogen was transferred among specimens in an initially hydrogen flushed and partially evacuated capsule equilibrated at 1000°C was investigated. ANYONE who wishes to make the patterns for statues in order to cast them later in bronze, even though he himself is the artificer who made them, must take many things into consideration: first, whether they are large or small, and whether they are wholly round or only in part; then of what material they are made, for the way that can be followed if they are of wax cannot be used if they are of clay, wood, marble, or even of plaster; likewise he must consider whether or not it has irons inside to support it. There is also a great difference in facility if the support is placed more in. one way than in another. Great consideration should be given to whether it is to be made hollow or solid. If you have not been the workman yourself, you must at least have been an active helper in this and in every other part in order to be able to observe everything without a fault. For if they are large it is necessary to make their moulds in pieces, with marks and measurements so that you can replace them-at will exactly in the same order and in the same places after they have been taken out. But if you are the artificer [as well as sculptor] the process is made easier. Taking the ordinary way and, over an iron, make out of well beaten moulding clay, compounded with cloth clippings a core exactly as the statue is to be or however large you wish the hollow to be. Dry and bake it. On top of this work the wax, thickening it all over as much as you wish the bronze to be and finish it completely, remembering to arrange that the base may come out solid with bronze so as to support the whole work. Then take some rods of hammered bronze one dito thick and one palmo long. Pass these throughs the thickness of the wax and fasten them in several places in the core of clay that you made. [81] Do it so that they, project out of the wax a good three or four dita. These are, put in so that when the wax is removed the core is held in the middle of the mould that forms the outer part, and this outer part is held by the inner part, namely the core, so that the mould may not move in any part from its place even when it is handled. This done, take some of that clay made with well-prepared cloth clippings as I taught you, and mix with it if you wish some wash ashes or
