This paper reviews practices used In the selection and sizing of belt conveyors and stacker systems commonly used in crushing and grinding plant facilities. Historical and modern methods of sizing this equipment are presented. The new methods Include: 1) probability theory applications for establishing component reliability, 2) "Monte Carlo" simulation techniques used in evaluating alternative system designs and in establishing service factors and corresponding availability Indices of each system, 3) quantifying the system and component operating characteristics using computer assisted modeling tools simulating rigid body and elasto-mechanic behavior for starting and stopping large and/or complex belt conveyors.

A POWDER pattern for the (Cr, Mo, Co)R-phase annealed at 1200°C was reported in 1951.1 Through the courtesy of Prof. D. P. Shoemaker of Massachusetts Institute of Technology the authors became aware of inconsistencies of this pattern with that to be expected from the structure of the R-phase, as determined by Komura, Shoemaker, and Shoemaker.' In addition, Professor Shoemaker also noted that the powder pattern reported8 for the (Cr, Mo, Co)D-phase, annealed at 1300°C, agreed fairly well with that to be expected from the newly determined structure of the R-phase. In view of these findings, the previously reported powder patterns of the R-phase and of the D-phase were compared carefully. It was found that most lines in the two patterns (22 lines) were to a fair degree of accuracy related to each other by a single conversion ratio for the corresponding d spacings. The value of the conversion ratio was found to be 1.0058, so that the d spacings of the D-phase pattern previously reported were larger than the correspond- ing d spacings for the reported R-phase pattern by approximately that factor. The intensity relationships between corresponding lines in the two patterns were similar, as judged visually. The following exceptions were noted: Lines Nos. 2, 3, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 of the D-phase pattern,:' all designated weak or very weak, were missing in the apparently somewhat fainter R-phase pattern used.' Lines 1, 2, 3, 5, 15 and 34 (all weak or very weak), reported for the R-phase, were missing in the D-phase pattern, Table I. In view of these observations it seemed probable that the two patterns differed from each other mainly by a slight change in lattice parameters (with c/a remaining approximately constant), and that the pattern previously reported for the R-phase contained some weak extraneous lines, most likely to be attributed to impurities. In order to check the foregoing assumption, two specimens of an alloy containing 43 pct by weight of cobalt, 41 pct molybdenum, and 16 pct chromium, which was within the composition range of stability of both the D-phase at 1300°C and of the R-phase at 1200°C, were homogenized at 1200 and 1300°C, respectively, and quenched. THE past year has been of unusual interest for industrial minerals. It is increasingly evident that requirements for these raw materials move with general economic trends. Thus, with a peak year in the construction, chemical and petroleum industries, the nonmetallic mineral industries have been brought into the complex maze of an economy in which military spending is in the billions and in which the national income and wholesale commodity prices reached new levels. Many industrial minerals are of first rank essentiality in the defense effort and its supporting industries, and since some of these are of limited supply and others dependent on imports, the problems of procurement, distribution and conservation of available supplies make a complicated pattern. Despite some drawbacks and weak spots, the industrial mineral industries have, in general, met the national situation with great credit and many new production records have been set. The general accomplishment in 1951 should be one of satisfaction with confidence for the future. Difficulties, unsolved problems and uncertainties should not obscure the general trend which many consider optimistic. Prices in the main have been upward, in line with the inflation spiral, but nonmetallics appear with some exceptions to be behind the general increases. Labor difficulties have not been serious throughout the year. Retarding influences in expansions and planning have been the uncertainty of the Korean and international situations and a lack of confidence by many in the government economic program and its ultimate impact on the economic structure. It must also be kept in mind that stockpiling, unless all-out war develops, reaches a level and then ceases to be a major sustaining factor in the mineral markets. In accordance with the Defense Production Act of 1950 various control agencies have been set up to establish the desired rate of stockpile acquisitions. The objectives are subject to change depending on availabilities and needs-military, industrial, and civilian. In some minerals there has been disagreement on actual stockpile requirements, and there is some feeling that the needs of defense might be better met if more funds went into the development of new sources of supply of scarce raw materials and more materials were released to industry at this time. Nonmetallic minerals on the strategic and critical list of the Munitions Board as of July 1951 were: Group I; asbestos, some types; bauxite, refractory grade; beryl; celestite; chromite, chemical and refractory grades; columbite; corundum; diamonds, industrial; fluorspar, acid grade; graphite, some types; kyanite; manganese ore, battery and chemical grades; mica, some types; quartz crystals; rare earths; sapphire and ruby; talc, steatite, block; and Group II; bauxite, abrasive; cryolite, natural; diamond dies; graphite, crystalline fines; iodine; mica, muscovite block, stained and lower; rutile; selenium; talc, steatite, ground; zirconium ore, zircon. Details on the current status of stockpiling inventories are not available. The Defense Minerals Exploration Administration has, since April, executed 39 contracts for the exploration of nonmetallic minerals, including twenty for mica, seven for beryl-mica, six for asbestos, three for sulphur and one each for monazite, steatite talc and fluorspar. Total value of these contracts came to $892,059, of which the Government's participation amounts to $689,247. This paper presents a method of predicting the recovery and performance of a five-spot steam injection project, in which a realistic approach to pattern sweepout efficiencies is made. Published methods for radial systems were modified for the five-spot pattern by approximating the stream lines with straight lines radiating from the injection well and then converging to the producing well. In each radial segment, the position of the steam front and the temperature profile ahead of the steam front were determined by heat balance equations, which included an estimation of heat losses to surrounding formations. The location of the saturations behind the cold water front was determined from a Buckley-Leverett solution to the material balance equation. Results from this program show steamflood recovery in a five-spot pattern to be considerably less than that predicted for true linear or radial flow systems. For a specific reservoir containing 900-cp oil, a steamflood in a purely radial flow system was predicted to recover more than 75 percent of the original oil in place when 2 PV of water had been injected as steam. A five-spot steamflood with otherwise identical properties was predicted to recover 10 percent of the original oil in place when 0.15 PV of water had been injected as steam and to recover almost no oil thereafter. A cold water five-spot flood in this system was predicted to recover approximately W percent of the oil in place with I PV of water injected. For a five-spot pattern in an example reservoir with 10-cp oil, steam injection similarly showed lower ultimate recovery than water injection but no improvement in recovery rule. Introduction The thermal recovery method considered in this study is steam injection in a five-spot pattern. Pattern steam injection has been given little attention in the past, possibly because of some rather obvious disadvantages. Unless steam temperature is maintained throughout the entire swept area, the process will revert to simple waterflood with all heat being lost prior to reaching the oil bank. Also, the oil viscosity reduction takes place near the steam front and not around the producing wellbore, so that low producing rates must still be endured. This is the reason for the success of the steam stimulation, or cyclic injection, in which the fluids are produced from the same well used for injection. On the other hand, steamflooding can offer some advantages. Oil displacement is by four methods: (1) mechanical displacement by the condensed water, (2) viscosity reduction of the crude oil, (3) swelling of the crude oil, and (4) distillation of the crude oil in the steam zone. Although dependent upon the crude, laboratory experiments have shown displacements up to 80 percent by steamflooding. In addition, steam is a good heat transport medium, since it is cheap and has a high heat content. Previous Investigations Previous publications have reported methods for predicting recovery in a steamflood for linear and radial systems. Since no pattern sweep efficiency is taken into consideration, the recovery even from a radial system must be greater than from more realistic geometries such as the very common five-spot patterns. Probably the broadest coverage is given by Willman who reported experimental results and offered a method of predicting recovery for a radial flow system. They concluded that both hot water and steam injection recover more oil than an ordinary waterflood, and that steam injection could yield recoveries "as much as 100 percent greater than by water flood." They also concluded that both the heat requirements for a reservoir and the residual oil remaining in the reservoir after steam injection were independent of the amount of oil originally in place, that short exploitation times were desirable, and that a high percentage of net sand in the reservoir with a high initial oil saturation was desirable. The method assumes that the flood occurs in three concentric cylindrical zones: (1) an inner steam zone, (2) a central hot water zone, and (3) an outer cold waterflood zone. Displacement in the steam zone is based on laboratory-determined residual oil saturations while the hot water and cold water zones use the conventional Buckley-Leverett equations. Shortly after our previous paper on this subject was printed1 we located a source of uncertainty in the results arising from the unexpected fact that hydrogen slowly reduces silica at 1100" C. in presence of iron, even when the iron nowhere touches the silica, although in absence of iron it does not do so. This difficulty has been completely obviated by the use of a small high-frequency furnace, which enables us to heat the specimen for analysis without raising the temperature of the silica vessel to a point at which any appreciable reduction of the silica glass occurs. We now describe this modification of procedure, and present some typical results obtained with it. For any given specimen of steel, the results are entirely definite and reproducible, but their precise significance is still open to some question, as indeed is true of all methods of oxygen determination SO far developed. Further elucidation of this question is to be expected from the cooperative comparison of the several methods now under way under the auspices of the Bureau of Standards at the instance of the Iron and Steel Division of the A.I.M.E. Apparatus The final form of apparatus we have used is identical with that described and illustrated in our previous paper, except for the substitution for the Globar furnace of a small high-frequency furnace actuated by a vacuum tube oscillator2 0f about 1.5 kw. capacity, and for a slight modification of the containing vessel. This transparent silica vessel is illustrated in Fig. 1 of this paper. Its enlarged portion is about 5 cm. in diameter and 13 cm. long. The silica tube for inlet of hydrogen is fused into this bulb and ends beneath the metal "bucket" holding the steel sample. This sample is in the form of fine millings. The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

Published data on the activity of carbon in binary and ternary austenite at 1000°C are reviewed. The composition variables are . The coefficient, Vj, has the value for substitutional elements but may be assigned a ualue -1 for silicon to effect a simplification on the mathematical treatment. The activity coefficient PC = is obtained from gas equilibrium data. For the ternary systems studied the Henrian activity coefficient is given by the expression: The principle advantage in cornparison with the analogous expression in terms of atom fractions is found in the fact that for most systems the final term and in many the last two terms are zero. Values of the interaction parameters are tabulated and the graphical comparison of the equation with experirt~ental data is sho,wn in several figures. The thermodynamic properties of the solid solution, austenite, are of considerable importance in the heat-treatment of alloy steels and in other aspects of ferrous metallurgy. Early studies embodied in the Fe-C diagram have been extended to include other binary and some ternary diagrams. Our best hope of obtaining a useful thermodynamic treatment of reactions in complex alloy steels will not be found in quaternary and quinternary phase diagrams but in determinations of activities and interaction relations among the several solute elements. The foundation for such a development was laid by smith' in his early studies of the activity of carbon in Fe-C alloys and his subsequent work on Fe-C-Si, Fe-C-Mn, Fe-C-Ni, and Fe-C-Co solid solutions.2"4 Other observers have also made noteworthy contributions and these will be discussed and correlated here in the light of a somewhat simplified mathematical treatment of solute interactions. Fe-C AT 1000°C In a recent review of the thermodynamic properties of binary Fe-C austenite it was shown that the simple mathematical treatment employed by smith' was capable of describing all the published results on this solution. The treatment utilizes the atom ratio, yc = nC/nF,, rather than the atom fraction. The activity of carbon is proportional to the equilibrium gas ratio, either measured on a scalk in which the activity of graphite is taken as unity or, alternatively, aC may be set equal to yc at infinite dilution. In either case the ratio aC/y = (PC, the activity coefficient. It was found that the experimental data of smith1 and those of Diin-wald and wagner; Bungardt, Preisendanz, and Lehn-ert,' and Scheil, Schmidt, and Wiinnings at temperatures of 800" to 1200° C as well as reliable data on the solubilities of graphite and cementite could be represented by the equation for which graphite is the standard state: The data on alloyed austenite have been obtained at 1000°C. For this temperature, the "Henrian" activity coefficient (which is unity at infinite dilution) is: FOr an interstitial solute such as carbon in austenite it has been shown by statistical mechanicsg that the activity in the infinitely dilute solution is proportional to the ratio of the number of lattice sites occupied by carbon to the number of yet unfilled lattice sites. A variable zz proportional to this ratio serves as a useful measure of concentration:" in which b is the number of lattice sites provided by each atom of solvent; in austenite b = 1. The Henrian activity approaches zz at infinite dilution and the ratio a is the activity coefficient. The effect of a change in concentration is then given by: It has been shown further that in some systems the derivative in Eq. [4] remains constant over a wide range of concentrations. FATIGUE crack propagation in some aspects can be viewed as being a result of localized plastic deformation concentrated near the tip of the crack.' Deformation is influenced by microstructure which in turn can affect the fatigue crack growth significantly. To study the effect of localized microstructural changes on fatigue crack propagation, cantilever-type notched specimens were subjected to cyclic bending at constant load amplitude. The extent of fatigue crack propagation was obtained by measuring the length of the crack by periodic observation with a microscope on the polished side of the sample,2"4 and these data were used in preparing the curves in the figures which follow. Figs. 1 (solid lines) and 2 show experimental results obtained in austenitic type 302 stainless steel containing higher than standard carbon (0.24 pct C) and 310 stainless steel. Both steels were homogenized for 8 hr at 1120°C and then water-quenched in order to prevent the precipitation of carbides. Fig. 3 shows experimental results obtained on 9440 low alloy steel in the normalized condition and in the quenched and tempered (580°C) condition. Indications of microstructural influence can be seen in scattering of the experimental data. The degree of scattering depends on both the microstructure and the amount of cyclic stress applied to the sample. For microstructures which are more easily deformed plastically, e.g., normalized or annealed as compared with hardened and tempered structures, the scattering is greater. Similarly, higher stresses produce greater scattering in the results, regardless of whether the cause of the stress increase is due to initial loading conditions or the growth in crack length. Scattering is believed to be a result of partial redistribution in the stress field around the tip caused by plastic deformation. This opinion is borne out by much smaller scattering of experimental results in the austenitic 302 high-carbon (0.24 pct C) steel. In this steel, plastic deformation in the neighborhood of the crack causes partial mar-tensitic transformation of metastable austenite,5 which in turn restrains further plastic deformation. This paper discusses recent Federal Bureau of Mines research on the selective flocculation of various minerals with insoluble cross-linked starch xanthate (ISX). ISX is insoluble, has a shelf life of more than a year when kept cold, and has a higher molecular weight due to cross-linking than the soluble, non-cross-linked starch xanthate used in previous flocculation studies on nonsulfide minerals. ISX readily flocculates a number of sulfide mineral fines, but no silicious gangue. Floc formation, floc size, and settling rate are dependent on pH. The pH dependence, however, differs for each mineral. Bornite has been selectively flocculated from bornite-quartz mixtures, and the bornite-containing flocs were separated from the unflocculated quartz using decantation and washing procedures.

The division in which the metals for conversion are melted. 2. The division in which the metals are converted into steel and cast into ingots, or the converting department. 3. The engine and boiler department which supplies the hydraulic power required to move the machinery, and which furnishes the blast used for converting the crude metal into steel.

Six examples of the peritectoid transformation were selected from the literature and studied by the method of isothermal transformation. The kinetics and mechanisms of five of the examples are presented as TTT diagrams and photomicrographs. The exist-enc- of a peritectoid in the sixth case is doubtful. ALTHOUGH the peritectoid transformation per se has been known for many years, no precise published data exist concerning the kinetics or mechanisms involved in transformations of this type, except for the brief treatment by Rhines, et al. 1,10 Bearing in mind the fact that investigations of recent years are uncovering more and more peritectoids and suspected peritectoids, a thorough study of the well-established peritectoids appeared to be in order. It was for this reason that a study of the kinetics and morphological mechanisms of six binary peritectoids was undertaken. The six peritectoids selected from the literature for study were those reported at 7.02 wt pct Al-Ag, 26.0 wt pct Sb-Cu, 30.5 wt pct Sb-Cu, 32.3 wt pct Sn-Cu, 8.35 wt pct Si-Cu, and 21.2 wt pct Al-Cu. These selections were based on availability and purity of components, ease of preparation and heat-treatment, and estimated reliability of the available equilibrium diagrams in the regions of interest. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys used in this investigation were induction melted in electrode-grade graphite and chill-cast in cast-iron split molds. In all cases, the alloys were so brittle that they could easily be broken into samples weighing 1 or 2 g. Chemical analyses showed that the alloys used were close to the respective peritectoid compositions reported in the literature and that the impurity levels were low in all cases. Metallographic examination showed uniform distributions of phases in all samples, indicating uniformity of composition in the samples studied. Isothermal transformation studies were carried out in fused-salt media, using the familiar inter-rupted-quench method. Uniformity of temperature in the salt baths was maintained by continuous stirring with a stainless-steel agitator. On the basis of actual observations of the temperature fluctuations, the estimated temperature control was + 10C for the Ag-Al and Cu-Sb alloys and ±30C for the Cu-Sn, Cu-Si, and Cu-Al alloys. The accuracy of all temperature measurements was estimated to be ±1°C. It was found necessary to mount metallographic specimens of the Ag-Al alloy in cold-curing methyl methacrylate, since the temperatures encountered in mounting in bakelite or lucite caused an appreciable degree of transformation to the ß phase. For the other alloys, wood-flour-filled bakelite mounts were used to avoid extraneous X-ray diffraction lines during the later examination of the metallographic specimens on a Norelco Geiger-counter d if f r ac tomete r. In the X-ray diffraction procedure, agreement between the published diffraction patterns and those obtained in this study was good. This was particularly important for phase identification, since the literature contained little in the way of micrograph description in some cases. Etching of the silver-aluminum alloy for metallographic examination was done by swabbing with either of the following reagents: 1) 10 g CrO3, 1 g (NH4), SO2, 0.5 g NH4NO3, 100 ml H2O, or 2) 10 ml NH4OH, 1 ml 20 pct KOH, 4 ml 3 pct H2O2, 5 ml H2O. The other alloys were etched with the usual bichromate etchant: 2 g K2Cr2O7, 1.5 g NaC1, 8 ml conc. H2SO4, 100 ml H20 (swabbed vigorously). EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) The Ag-Al peritectoid at 7.02 wt pct Al— The phase equilibrium involved in this peritectoid is shown in Fig. I.2 The phase boundaries in the vicinity of the peritectoid were most comprehensively established by Hume-Rothery, et al,3 who placed the equilibrium temperature at 448 °C and the equilibrium compositions of the a ß' and y phases at 6.11, 7.02, and 7.24 wt pct Al, respective The alloy used in this study analyzed4 6.95 wt pct A making it slightly hypoperitectoid according to the accepted equilibrium diagram. The phenomenon called "water-coning" is that, observed in many oil wells, in which bottom water gradually and frequently sudderlly displaces a part or all of the oil production when a certain rather critical production rate from the well is exceeded. To follow in detail the process of the formation of a water cone as it breaks through the oil zone and enters the well bore is a problem so complex as to make a theoretical analysis practically impossible. However, an analytical treatment of the flow system before the water has broken through and during the time that it lies statically beneath the oil zone with an elevated or "coned" surface can be carried through under certain approximations. To present an analysis which shows the essential characteristics of the coning mechanism is the purpose of the present discussion. Physical Basis of Theory and Meaning of Approximations As will always be true for flow systems where true water-coning is at all possible, the water will be supposed to lie beneath the oil zone because of its density contrast with respect to the oil. In fact, tinder the usual field conditions, when the pay horizon is reasonably homogeneous, the water most frequently enters the well through the lower zones, but even when it enters from intermediate zones it may, in the later life of the well, displace the bottom layers of oil, thus resulting in a system wherein the oil is effectively floating on the water.

ACQUISITION JUSTIFICATION There are many reasons why companies consider acquisitions as a means to expand their operations. Some wish to reduce the impact of business cycles on their businesses. Others seek firms within the same industry for expansion and increased market share. Still others diversify in order to avoid takeovers. Whatever the reasons or justification, an evaluation of an acquisition candidate should be systematic and thorough. To many financial managers the concept of a systematic acquisition evaluation indicates the need for a regular set of evaluation criteria. While these are available from numerous sources, one basic parameter frequently overlooked is the application of these criteria to an industry which is different from the acquirer. This becomes particularly important when evaluating firms within the mineral industry. The mineral industry is significantly different from other industries to require different valuing techniques. • This paper will present a number of reasons why an acquisition candidate in the mineral industry should be evaluated differently from other acquisitions, including by other mineral firms. Additionally, this paper will review the most appropriate means of valuing a mineral firm. • Firms considering the acquisition of a mineral firm should understand the nature of the industry before ever making a tender offer. Some of the general considerations include the following: • Level of Capital Intensity: In the mid-1980's the start up cost for a gold mine has been between 20-200 million dollars and 500-1,500 million dollars for a bauxite operation. • Global Nature of Competition: Except for certain industrial minerals, most minerals and metals are traded worldwide and many on national exchanges, such as COMEX. • Start-Up Time: Many mining operations in developed and developing countries have long lead times, 7 to 10 years in some cases, prior to the start-up of production. • Long Term Nature of Investment: For most mineral operations payback usually occurs at least 7 years after production has started. Additionally, many mining operations will continue producing for 80-100 years. • High Level of Risk: The number of factors that a mining firm cannot control such as grade, volume, world supply and demand, plus the long payback periods tend to classify mineral firms at a higher than average risk compared to other investments. • Cyclical Nature: The mineral industry is cyclical in nature, experiencing long troughs and explosive peaks, thus making timing a critical issue. • Labor Intensive: Even with the large capital requirements needed to operate a mine, most mines are labor intensive in proportion to their capital equipment. • Location: Obviously, the nature of this industry requires operators to work in difficult locations, frequently far from civilized localities, in poor weather conditions and without proper supply and distribution infrastructure. One of the most important considerations is an understanding of asset replacement and asset value. Unlike manufacturing concerns, firms in the mineral industry are working toward the elimination, through depletion, of their asset base. Product flexibility is not available to a mining operation. A mineral firm basically has two options as its resource base is depleted: 1) replace the asset with new production, or 2) deplete the asset and close down operation, as in the South African gold mining model referred to later in this paper. Recent experiments with II-VI compounds have shown that they hazle considerable potential for laser applications over a broad region of the optical spectrum. It may be possible to cover the spectrum continuously from 3200A (ZnS) to the far infrared (CdHg:Te) since HgTe is a semimetal. At this writing laser action has been observed in ZnS, Zn0, CdS, CdSe, CdS:Se, CdTe, and some of the CdHg:Te alloys. Of particular interest are those lasers operating in the zlisible and near ultraciolet regzons of the spectrum where detectors of high sensitivity are available. The lasing transitions in II-VI compounds are bound exciton transitions some of which have been identified in auxiliary experiments. High efficiencies and low thresholds for lasing hare been achieved almost exc1usively in plutelet-type crystals. The greater crystalline quality exhibited by the phtelet-type material is shown to result from the crystal growth habit. Phonon scattering- of conduction electrons to the ground-state exciton is discussed ill relution to Lou thresholds and high efficiencies for lasing- observed in the CdS:Se solid solutions. The first successful semiconductor laser operation was achieved in the III-V compounds. It is possible to choose a material in this group that will operate between approximately 0.65 and 8.5 . There are at least two reasons why one would like to have a laser operating at shorter wavelengths. First, it would be easier to experiment with a laser operating in the visible region of the spectrum, and also more desirable to have high-in tensity visible light sources. Second, the most sensitive photomul-tiplier detectors are available in the visible and near ultraviolet regions of the spectrum. It is known that II-VI compounds are direct-band-gap semiconductors and as such offer the potential of operating at any specified wavelength between 3200 (ZnS) and 7772A (CdTe). Light emission from II-VI compounds has been the subject of numerous investigations for many years. These investigations were all primarily concerned with noncoherent emission. It has been only recently that coherent emission from these compounds has been observed. To date, laser operation has been demonstrated in CdS, CdSe, and the solid solutions of CdS:Se, ZnS, ZnO, and CdTe. These compounds cover an appreciable portion of the optical spectrum from the ultraviolet to the near infrared. In considering laser applications, the use of lasers in communication's systems offers many desirable features. In any operation of this type one must consider the losses in transmitting the radiation from the source to the detector. Atmospheric absorption in the visible and near ultraviolet is variable and greater than in certain regions of the infrared. It might be concluded that for long-range communication systems an infrared laser operating in a spectral region that is coincident with a transmission window in the atmosphere would be preferable. However, one cannot overlook the possibility of operating a system in the sensitive region of a highly sensitive photomultiplier detector or other light-amplifying system. LASER CONSIDERATIONS To produce a source of coherent radiation it is necessary to achieve a population inversion. In the case of semiconducting materials it is necessary to raise the electrons from one energy state to a higher-energy state relative to it. In semiconductors, this population inversion can be achieved by three different techniques: 1) Current Injection. This technique uses a p-n junction biased in the forward direction. Large numbers of electrons are injected from the n region into the p region, and recombination occurs close to the junction. An inverted population is obtained in this region and the recombination radiation propagates parallel to the junction. This type of pumping has been used in the GaAs junction-type lasers but has not been successfully employed in the II-VI compounds. 2) Optical Pumping. In this case, one uses photons to obtain a population inversion by exciting electrons to higher-energy states. The pump sources are flash lamps or arc lamps and, occasionally, other laser sources when such sources have the appropriate energy for exciting the electrons. The disadvantage of this type of pumping is that flash lamps put out a rather broad spectrum of radiation, whereas the laser material has a rather narrow region of absorption. This results in an inefficient process. Laser sources provide efficient pump sources but the number of usable wavelengths is limited. 3) Electron Beam Pumping. In this technique, the laser sample cavity is bombarded with electrons having energies in the range from approximately 10 to a few hundred kv. The bombarding radiation excites electrons from valence to conduction band states in the semiconductor, giving rise to an inverted population. This type of pumping has been used successfully in several 11-VI compounds.

A method is presented by which the displacement efficiency of a steam-injection process may be determined. The method consists of a determination of the position of the steam front at a particular time and the application of the Buckley-Leverett theory to the hot and cold regions of the reservoir with the appropriate hot or cold fluid properties. A uniform, linear flow system is assumed for this study. The method is applied to a number of reservoir conditions. The primary properties which affect the results of a steam-injection process are the oil viscosities at steam and reservoir temperatures, injection rate, pay thickness and oil saturation. The efficiency of steam injection is compared with that of water injection for a 10-acre, linearly flooded reservoir. In reservoirs where the oil viscosity is about 35 times the water viscosity, the steam process yields recoveries about 20 per cent higher than the water flood. Where the oil viscosity is near 500 cp, the steam process may recover from three to four times as much oil as a water flood. INTRODUCTION In a previous paper,' a method was suggested for evaluating a steam-injection process. Emphasis was placed upon the determination of the steam-front position in the reservoir at various times. In the present paper, the displacement process is studied in more detail. The approach is essentially that employed by Jordan, Rayne and Marshall3 in their study of hot-water injection. The steam-injection process is quite complex, and an exact description of the process has not been found; however, a qualitative description can be made. When a quantity of steam is injected into a relatively cold reservoir, the leading edge of the steam front continaally flows into cool sand, and some steam condenses. As more and more steam condenses, a bank of condensed water will form which is augmented by displaced connate water. The reservoir may be divided in three regions—(1) a region containing displaced fluids at reservoir temperatures, (2) a region contain- ing water at reservoir temperature and (3) a region occupied by steam. The reasons for the lack of a region of hot water or oil of any appreciable size have been discussed.' A method has been presented by which the location of the steam front can be determined even when heat losses to the regions surrounding the reservoir are sizable compared with the amount of heat injected. It remains to show the effectiveness of steam injection in increasing the ultimate oil recovery. To illustrate the technique for determining the increase in displacement efficiency and, hence, the increase in ultimate production, two sets of hypothetical reservoir conditions will be studied in detail.

A study of the structures arising from the decomposition of the ß solid solutions in the Cu-Zn and the Cu-A1 systems is of peculiar interest in the study of the mechanism of precipitation from solid solutions. It is possible in these alloys, by varying the composition within the ß field, to precipitate from the same basic lattice phases having different lattice structures. It has been rather generally assumed heretofore that the type of structure originating from the decomposition of a solid solution— the Widmanstätten structure—-is determined by the lattice structure of the parent solid solution alone. In the first paper of this series1 evidence was advanced which threw doubt upon this hypothesis; but definite proof of the correctness or incorrectness of the hypothesis should be forthcoming from a study of these alloys, for if the structures originating, for example, from the precipitation of the a phase from ß and of the ? phase from the ß in the Cu-Zn system should be shown to be crystallographically different, the hypothesis would necessarily be held as definitely disproved. Furthermore, the newer proposal enunciated in the first paper of this series—that the origin of the Widmanstätten structure lies in a cooperation between the lattice of the parent solid solution and that of the precipitate-—which at present seems the only a1ternative hypothesis, would in such an event be given added weight. The work here reported shows that the Widmanstätten structures originating in the precipitation of the a phase from the ß and in the precipit'at.ion of the y phase from the y in the Cu-Zn system are indeed crystallographically different; and incidentally presents some new descriptive information on the Widmanstätten structure from a more general point, of view.

The selective dissolution of pyrolusite (MnO2) in presence of goethite (FeO•OH) in aqueous ammoniacal ammonium carbamate solution has been investigated: various reducing agents were studied, in particular sodium sulfite (Na2SO3,) and hydrazine hydrate (N2H4•H2O). Sodium sulfite was found to be an unsatisfactory reducing agent for both goethite and pyrolusite, for the leaching rate decreased steadily with time to an impractical level because of the limited solubility of the reactions products. Hydrazine hydrate was an effective reducing agent for pyrolusite even at low temperature, whereas goethite required much higher temperatures for any appreciable dissolution. A 1-hr leach at 35°C dissolved 90% of the pyrolusite but only 0.1% of the goethite. An activation energy of 17.0 Kcal per mole was found for the dissolution of pyrolusite with hydrazine. A reaction mechanism for the leaching of pyrolusite with hydrazine is proposed in which a reduction reaction on the surface of the mineral is the rate-determining step. The application of ammonium carbamate to the beneficiation of ilmenite is briefly described.

The nodulizing process described converts finely divided zinc calcine into a dense purified nodule. These zinc nodules are suitable for direct use in zinc reduction furnaces, especially the horizontal retort type, for the production of metal or American process zinc oxide furnaces for producing lead free zinc oxide. The basic reactions are carried out in a rotary kiln fired with fuel oil or natural gas. The combustion gases travel countercurrent to the flow of the zinc bearing material. Volatile impurities are carried out of the kiln with the combustion gases and a small portion of the finely divided feed material. The gases are cooled and the larger solid particles are separated from the stream before the resultant fume is collected in a conventional cloth filter baghouse. The fume collected can be further processed by conventional wet processes for the recovery of metallic values such as lead and cadmium. In order to nodulize the calcine properly it is elevated to a point of incipient fusion. The agglomerated material falling from the kiln is cooled and then sized by passing through a screening and crushing system consisting of a jaw crusher and a roll crusher in closed circuit with a vibrating screen.
