The intermetallic compounds MgzSn and Mg2Pb are two of the important series of stoichiometric compounds which magnesium forms with elements of the fourth group of the periodic system. Since there is a complete series of compounds, all possessing the same comparatively simple structure, a unique opportunity is presented to study their properties with respect to increasing atomic number of the anion as it varies from silicon and germanium, through tin and lead. The present work deals with the two lower members of this group, and it is hoped eventually that additional data regarding the silicide and germanide will be obtained. The results of such a complete study provide part of the essential basis for the empirical correlation and theoretical treatment which, in other systems, has contributed to an understanding of inter-metallic compounds and the metallic'state in general. Some experimental data are already available in the literature. However, they are fragmentary and limited in significance owing to the methods of preparation employed and the impure materials available at the time. It was our objective, therefore, using pure metals and improved metallurgical methods of preparation, to produce stoichiometric compounds of high purity for the study of their electrical and chemical properties. We felt that a detailed investigation of chemical properties, about which relatively little is known, combined with electrical properties, would be a significant contribution to the understanding of these compounds and in particular to the mechanism of corrosion associated with types of bonding in alloy systems. The chemical studies are reported elsewhere. Previous Investigations Previous work concerning the electrical properties of these compounds was undertaken in connection with the establishment of the two phase diagrams which are available in Hansenl and Beck. The first comprehensive investigation of the electrical conductivity of magnesium-tin and magnesium-lead alloys was made by Kurnakov and Stepanov.3 This was followed by Grube and Voss-kiihler4 who studied electrical conductivity and thermal expansion over a wide range of temperature and who, unlike Stepanov, appreciated the significance of the large solid solubility of tin in magnesium and took some precautions to obtain an equilibrium state. Financing the acquisition of a going coal mine operation has not had the exposure other finance-oriented projects have had. Therefore, C.I.T. feels that coal mining people and financial people should improve their understanding of the factors involved in this important type of acquisition. The discussion consists of two major subjects: analysis of the acquisition of the property, and sources and terms of funding the acquisition. Source and Terms of Funding There is a need to keep the competent medium-sized independent operator in the coal business, especially in these times of energy shortage. The creation of a resale market for coal mines encourages new investment in the coal mining business by medium-sized operators and their financial backers. Who provides debt and equity financing to acquire going coal mine operations and on what terms?

Lying to the east of the Rio Grande, in central New Mexico, is a long N. and S. mountain range, broken into separate ridges at several points. These have received separate names; the mountains at the south end, near El Paso, being known as the Franklin mountains, and then, following successively, to the north, the San Andreas range, Sierra Oscura, Manzano and Sandia mountains. At the eastern base of the Sierra Oscura there are several low ridges, remarkable for their red color. All of these red ridges contain reefs of copper-ore. The eastern flanks of the Sierra Oscura are composed of limestone. Some fossils in the limestone were examined by Prof. J. P. Smith of Stanford University, who says they are Fusulina and indicate an Tipper Carboniferous age. The sandstones and shales containing the copper-reefs directly overlie this limestone (Fig. I), and are very likely of Permian age, like the similar beds in Texas, described by Mr. W. F. Cummins.* Overlying the copper-beds are red sandstones and shales in which very little copper has been found. The cupriferous zone and the red sandstones and shales are everywhere associated, and as one stands on a high point, he will see that these rocks form three main belts or lines of hills. These may be referred to as the northern, middle and southern belts. The northern belt was not visited by me, but is known to contain copper-deposits. The middle belt has a trend of N. of W. and S. of E. The copper-reefs have been traced for a distance of more than 2 miles. The southern belt has a trend of about N. 30' W. and S. 30°

INTRODUCTION Summary of Factors Influencing Comminution Circuit Design The selection of an appropriate comminution circuit for a specific ore is one of the most important decisions in the design of a processing plant. The importance is related to the fact that the capital and operating costs for crushing and grinding plant generally represent, as is well known, the major portion of the plant costs. This chapter will, therefore, identify as many as possible of the factors which influence the selection of a comminution circuit. The number of factors which will have to be considered for any comminution project will depend, among other things, on the type of project. If, for example, the project is an entirely new mining development, then most, if not all, the factors identified will have to be analyzed. If the project is an expansion of a developed mining operation or if the new orebody is adjacent to a viable operation, then the existing operation will influence the choice of factors or design constraints which need to be considered. The existing infrastructure or supporting systems may be quite adequate to accommodate the requirements of any expansion or new development. Hence, those factors may not have to be considered. To cover, however, the widest spectrum of projects, the factors which have been identified in this chapter are those which will have to be considered for the most complex of projects, that of developing an entirely new mining operation. The range of factors is as broad as the range of different ore types. Thus, each development must be treated with individualized care. The most important step in the development is the analysis and understanding of the ore characteristics. The hardness of the ore, its abrasiveness, friability, moisture content, grade, mineralization including gangue mineralization, liberation size, chemistry, and other characteristics should be the first to be analyzed in the investigation. The next should be the determination of factors such as plant size, throughput, location, climate, accessibility, and availability of water. No mystery shrouds the discovery of chromium. The indefatigable French chemist Vauquelin, in reporting his discovery of this chemical element to 1'Institut National in 1798, concluded his discourse with the statement: "I place before the eyes of the Institute a small quantity of chromium and several of its most re- markable combinations." Working with the so-called "red lead of Siberia, Vauquelin not only prepared numerous chemical compounds of the new metal, but he reduced the oxide to the metallic state. These chemical compounds possessed a variety of remarkably distinctive colors; so, acceding to suggestion, Vauquelin named the new element chrome (chromium), a derivative of the Greek word chroma, meaning color. Siberian "red lead" (crocoite) was not plentiful; however, it was not long before Vauquelin's prediction was realized that the chemical compounds of chromium would become useful in the arts when sources of chromium became more readily available. Although chrome-iron ore (chromite) became obtainable in France, the United States and elsewhere during the early part of the nineteenth century, it is interesting to note that from 1828 to about 1860, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and others of the eastern United States furnished almost the entire chrome-ore requirements of the world. THE Pacific Northwest's joint meeting of the Industrial Minerals and Metals Branch in Spokane, Wash., drew 260 members, 72 students, and 30 ladies. Theme of the meeting was to acquaint men in the industry with students and younger men. The special appeal to the students was coupled with an attempt to attract young technical men from the companies located in the northwestern area. The activities of the meeting were available without charge to students. Contributions were made by the industries in the area to assist student attendance. Following the special student and faculty trip to the Trentwood rolling mills and research laboratory on Friday afternoon everyone enjoyed a complimentary dinner. A. Y. Bethune of the Sullivan Mining Co., spoke to the group on the operations of Kellogg, Idaho electrolytic zinc plant. The Industrial Minerals Div. session was opened on Saturday morning by R. G. Vervaeke, Conference Chairman who introduced A. O. Bartell of the Raw Materials Survey, Portland, Ore. Mr. Bartell in turn introduced C. W. Sweetwood who discussed Open-Pit Phosphate Mining.

THE Southeast Missouri division of the St. Joseph Lead Co. normally hauls and hoists over 5 million tons of lead ore each year. This ore is mined in the stopes and headings of 20 mines, hauled to a main line system, see above, and transported up to 6.4 miles to ore-hoisting shafts. Average haulage distance is 2.16 miles. A few years ago a distinguished mining engineer visiting this area for the first time remarked, "You do not have a mining problem; yours is a haulage problem." Its relative importance may be gaged by the fact that mine haulage represents about 25 pct of the total cost of mining ore, the most costly single underground operation. The Southeast Missouri lead belt is a mining district located about 65 miles south of St. Louis. This district is roughly 6 miles wide and 10 miles long. The ore horizon lies about 400 ft below the surface where most of the ore is mined from flat-lying beds of dolomitic limestone. This paper deals with the central part of the district, namely, that portion which contains a group of interconnected mines all in a central haulage system, serving four hoisting shafts. The two major hoisting operations are carried out at Federal No. 17 shaft and Leadwood No. 12 shaft. No. 17 accounted for about 70 pct of the ore hoisted in the district during 1950, averaging about 14,000 tons per operating day. The underground dumping and skip-pocket system at this shaft is similar to those of the other shafts except that it has two rotary dumps. The other ore-hoisting shafts have only one. It might be mentioned that waste rock is hoisted at still other shafts, hauled off, and dumped on the surface by trucks. The hoisting shafts are on a connected system of about 200 miles of underground 24-in. gage main line railroad. There is also the Bonne Terre system, with its own ore-hoisting shaft, which consists of 13.5 miles of 24-in. gage main line, located in the extreme north portion of the lead belt area. Smaller outlying mines such as Doe Run No. 12 and Hayden Creek operate on trackless or shuttle car haulage. In addition to the system of main line haulage, each contributing mine group has its own extensive system of stope or heading railroad. Trackless mining is making considerable headway in the Lead-wood and Desloge mines. Here the shovel loads into a shuttle car which in turn dumps into mine cars spotted on the main line track system. The tensile behavior of magnesium single crystals at a temperature of 26º ± 2ºC was investigated at varying pressure levels from 760 to 8 X 10-8 tow. For crystals deformed at a constant linear strain rate of 0.061 min-1. there was no apparent effect of the vacuum environment down to 10-8 torr. However, from a vacuum of 10-5 torr down to the lowest pressure attained (8 x 10-8 tor,), the effect of the vacuum environment was to increase the strain at the end of the first linear (or easy-glide) stage and to decrease the slope of this stage; the magnitude of this effect was found to be dependent on pressure. The slope of the second linear stage was also decreased at the lower pressure levels; however, this effect appears to be caused primarity by the vacuum effect on the first linear stage. The magnitude of the vacuum-environmrnt effect was also found to be dependent upon strain rate. The reduction in flow stress at 5 x 10-8 torr, as compared to the stress in air, was obserced to be about 10 pct for a strain rate of 0.0250 min-' and 70 pct for a strain rate of 0.67 min-1. No systematic effect of pressure on the critical resolvled shear stress was observed. The data interpreted in terms of a modified form of Mott's work-hardening mechanism for hexagonal metals. It has long been known that surface conditions influence the mechanical behavior of materials. Roscoe 1 demonstrated the importance of surface conditions on mechanical behavior by testing cadmium crystals with oxide layers. He found that the "apparent" critical resolved shear stress for cadmium was increased approximately 2.5 times by the presence of an oxide layer 1000 atoms thick. The magnitude of this effect was dependent on film thickness with crystals having films less than 20 atoms thick still showing a definite increase. This observed strengthening could not be attributed to any strength of the oxide film because of 1) the thinness of the films and 2) an observed increase in the flow stress as deformation proceeded. Harper and cottrel12 obtained similar results on zinc crystals which had been etched and steamed to give artificially thick oxide films. However, in the course of this study, they also carefully examined the very early stages of plastic flow for zinc crystals which in one case had been electrolytically polished and in the other had been lightly etched to produce a thin film. They then found that the critical resolved shear stress for both surface treatments of the crystals was actually identical but that the etched crystal exhibited a much more rapid initial hardening rate. This had not been noted previously. This result indicated that, in fact, the film caused an increase in the stress for continuation of slip, rather than for the initiation of slip. Lipsett and King3 investigated the effect of evaporated gold films on the plastic behavior of cadmium single crystals. For large angles (=75 deg) between the specimen axis and the normal to the slip plane, they found that the stress-strain curve of the coated specimen always lies above that for a clean specimen. THE increased strength of a polycrystal-line metallic aggregate compared with that of its individual crystals generally has been associated with complex stress distributions at the grain boundaries resulting from atomic irregularity between grains. This disregistry, together with the necessity for adjacent crystals to deform 'compatibly regardless of the single crystal crystallographic strain mechanism, complicates this mechanism so as to increase the metal's resistance to deformation. Although Taylor1 has shown from purely mechanical considerations the requirement for at least five active slip systems to absorb the complexities during the homogeneous deformation of polycrystalline face-centered cubic metals, experimental studies by Barrett and Levenson2 indicate that this is feasible only in a qualitative sense because of deviations from homogeneous deformation. Seitz and Read in their review3 state: "Unfortunately . . . present knowledge of the grain boundary influence is not sufficient to complement the work in single crystals and provide us with a good foundation for treating polycrystals." The purpose of this investigation was to attempt to clarify the gap between single crystals and crystalline aggregates by an analysis of the effects of deformational stresses. Some of the results were described by C. H. Mathewson in his 1943 Campbell Memorial Lecture.21 PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS Since the performance of single crystals deformed under pure stresses has been relatively thoroughly investigated, the most significant researches are concerned primarily with deviations from single crystal behavior of large grained specimens. Qualitative grain boundary effects involving the observed amount of slip were reported by Carpenter and Elam5 in 1921. Individual crystals in a two or three grained aluminum specimen deformed by tension acted in the normal manner described by Taylor and Elam4 except for marked modifications at the grain boundaries. There the power to withstand deformation was considerably increased, leaving a ridge on the specimen where decreased slip occurred, often noticeable 34 in: from the boundary. Adcock,6 Yamaguchi,7 Seumel,8 Hirst9 and others have also reported this phenomenon as a qualitative trend. Yet attempts by O'Neill10 and Ljunggren11 to measure a difference in hardness at grain boundaries in undeformed specimens were unsuccessful. Miller12 measured quantitatively the reduction in slip near the boundary between the single crystal and polycrystalline areas of zinc specimens. These effects consisted of two parts: I. FROM its inception, a limestone quarry or mine should be under the direction of a capable engineer. Before it becomes a reality, he should outline the future results, plan the most economical methods for moving the materials and the most efficient equipment, and pilot the undertaking along the narrow pathway of success, avoiding the pitfalls of uneconomical production and the precipitous walls of scanty profits. Inspection of successful limestone properties shows that all have had difficult engineering problems, the solution of which have required keen engineering ability. In approaching a subject of this nature, it is logical to follow the progress of the limestone operation from its inception to the end, as reflecting the engineering required. There are four major divisions: Investigation, equipment, development, and operation.

A method has been developed for evaluating acid treatments in fractured limestone fields by breaking down pressure drawdown into three component parts: (I) pressure differcntial across "skin" near the borehole face, (2) pressure differential due to flow resistance in the coarse communicating fissures and (3) pressure differential between the fine voids and the coarse fissures. It is apparent that in most successful acid treatments the first term, skin resistance, has been reduced or eliminated. Further, it is often possible to estimate the volume of coarse fissures associated with the second term, coarse fissure flow resistance. In cases where this volume is comparable with practical acid volumes it seems likely that this resistance also may be attacked with a suitably retarded acid. INTROD UCTION Acid treatment has been successfully applied as a general practice in the limestone wells in the Mara/ Maracaibo districts of Venezuela for some 10 years. At the same time the need has been felt for a more precise method of: (1) evaluating the effect of an acid job and (2) selecting wells which should benefit from an acid treatment. The following method, based on an analysis of build-up curves for wells producing from fractured limestone, provides a means of forecasting the effect acid will have on a well and in many cases the probable order of production rate increase which may be expected. In certain cases it is also possible to calculate the fissure volume through which the acid has to be displaced for best results. Various approximations are introduced in the method, but within the limitations of these the analysis gives an indication of how a well, whether previously acidized or not, may be expected to respond to acid treatment. Suitable build-up curves cannot be obtained on "tight" wells which do not give sustained production and the method is not applicable to such wells. Figs. 1 through 7 illustrate various types of build-up curves obtained from limestone wells in Western Venezuela. Curves are included showing (1) both skin and coarse fissure resistance, (2) skin resistance only, (3 and 4) reduction of skin resistance by acidization, (5) fissure resistance only, (6) reduction of coarse fissure resistance by acidization, and (7) acidization failure. This theory has been successfully applied for over three years during which 22 acid treatments have been carried out specifically to reduce skin resistance and three treatments to reduce coarse fissure resistance. The method has been found to be a useful aid in the selection of wells for acidization.

To THE average person, the purport of the items and figures on the balance sheet of a mining company are hazy and the real financial condition of the company is cloaked in obscurity. It is also likely that the satisfaction of the stockholder in his investment, as well as the determination of the prospective investor, rests more on the reputation of the company, his confidence in the management, the stated earnings per share and the dividends paid, than on a comprehension of the information contained in the balance sheet. The balance sheet of any company at best can only closely approximate the true financial condition as of a given date. Any item of asset, except cash, can probably be altered if another's viewpoint is applied. It is difficult and expensive to drill and explore an orebody to determine the entire tonnage of ore therein. Those inherent difficulties render it practically impossible to prepare an absolutely correct balance sheet of a mining company. It is possible, however, to present the facts of a mining company more intelligently and comprehensively than is usually done. With this in mind, a balance sheet of an imaginary mining company is submitted, with supporting schedules. The same fundamental principles hold true whether we consider a large or a small company. Less complexity is involved in dealing with the affairs of a smaller company. Therefore, for this purpose, the assumed company operates but two mines and a smelting plant. It has been deemed advisable to introduce the features of the operation of a mine acquired prior to March 1, 1913 and one after that date. The presentation therefore is concerned in one mine with the appraisement as of March 1, 1913 and in the other with the appraisement by reason of discovery. A consequential factor pertains to dividends paid from depletion reserves and therefore free of surtax to the stockholders. While supporting schedules, when necessary, give details of certain items on the balance sheet, it seems desirable to give further explanations with respect to some of them. This seems to be important because some mining companies do not treat the items as indicated on the statements submitted.

Equilibrium data are reported on the composition and densities of coexisting vapor and liquid phases as a function of Pressure and temperature for four hydrocarbon systems prepared from crude oil and natural gas. The data were observed over a range of pressures from 1000 to 8220 Ib. per sq. in. and at temperatures ranging from 35' to 250°F. The compositions of the hydrocarbon systems were such that the critical temperatures of the mixtures were lower than the range of the investigation. Under these conditions, it is shown that the composition of the systems has a marked effect upon both the absolute value of the equilibrium constants and the change of the constants with pressure for the several components comprising the system. From weight-balance considerations, it has been possible to construct the partial phase diagram of a mixture of a 49.9" A.P.I. crude oil and natural gas having a gas-oil ratio of 3660 cu. ft. per barrel. Descriptions of the apparatus used, the analytical procedure, the material used, and the equilibrium measurements are included. A knowledge of the physical behavior of naturally occurring hydrocarbon mixtures is fundamental to the treatment of many problems in the production, transportation and rehing of petroleum. The recent discoveries of pools having formation pressures up to 7500 lb. per sq. in. and higher, and the development of full-scale equipment to operate at pressures of 5000 lb. per sq. in. or more have greatly increased the need for knowledge of the composition, temperature, pressure and density relationships of coexisting vapor and liquid hydrocarbon phases. The following paper presents the results of investigations upon 22 mixtures of natural gas and crude oil of known com~o~itio~ that had been brought to equilibrium under controlled conditions of temperature and pressure. Data are presented upon the densities and compositions of the coexisting vapor and liquid phases for four different systems containing hydrocarbon material having boiling points from minus 2 5S°F. to well over I000 F. The data were observed Over a pressure range from Iooo Ib. per Sq. in to 8220 lb. Per sq. in. and a temperature range from 35' to 2 50°F. The accepted method of computing the physical relationship between two coexisting phases of a hydrocarbon mixture is by use of the "equilibrium constant" K as proposed by Souders, Selheimer, and Brown. definition,

THIS interesting application of the laws of thermodynamics to metallurgical practice has not been discussed by any writer, within my reading, except the late Prof. Gallon of Paris. In his Cours de Machines,* Prof. Callon has given a short but lucid discussion of this subject in the admirably clear style for which he was remarkable. Although the interest attached to the subject is rather theoretical than practical, I have thought that an attempt to explain the mechanical action exerted in the hot-blast oven might not be entirely devoid of utility, especially in the suggestions which it involves. The statement, that the mechanical work performed in heating the blast is, when high temperatures are produced, considerably greater than the work performed by the blowing-engine, may seem incredible to many who are practically acquainted with the subject, appearing, as it does, to conflict with the results of their experience. It is, nevertheless, literally true, and I shall attempt in this paper to prove it, and to explain why it has not rendered itself palpably manifest in practice. Before proceeding to the mathematical demonstration, it will be well to recall to mind the definitions of some terms employed by writers in mechanics and thermodynamics. The actual energy of a moving body, as defined by Rankine, is the work which it is capable of performing against a retarding resistance before being brought to rest, and is equal to the energy which must be exerted on the body to bring it from a state of rest to its actual velocity. A GREAT labor, surely, is that of the coppersmith, since his every work must be hewn from the mass of copper by force of the hammer. At the beginning, middle, and, end all his works are inconvenient pieces and unpleasant to handle. If the work is done on the forge with the fire, it is done in order to refine or compose it into masses again, for drawing these out while hot with the blows of some heavy hammer, or in order to put the works in a condition that allows them to be drawn out while cold and worked. In this he puts all his labor and industry. He who works at this art often makes use of large hammers, sometimes of small ones, and sometimes of those that have a long iron head and a short handle. With these he is obliged ever to proceed in one of these activities, either extending the work lengthwise, narrowing it, or widening it. This is achieved by the manner and direction of striking and therefore it is sometimes hammered on the inside, sometimes on the outside, sometimes with the peen, and sometimes with the flat head. For instance, when he wishes to close it up he strikes it on the outside with the peen, and if he wishes to widen it he strikes it on the inside with either the flat head or the peen. In this way he proceeds to shape it with constant patience, and to make all the vessels that he works graceful. This metal, as I have told you, is soft, flexible, and tenacious under the hammer. It yields with a certain toughness, provided, however, that it is fine and without admixture of a trace of tin or other metal. That craftsman is a good master of this art who best makes every desired work

Coal mining is one of the major activities that may affect the natural or existing hydrologic equilibrium of a basin. Consequently, the mining industry is committed to the conservation and protection of the hydrologic balance within and around mining environments. This commitment embodies thorough and careful consideration of the quantitative and qualitative variations and, in general terms, the environmental impacts of mining activity on the natural water systems. A research program was undertaken to study the impacts of full extraction coal mining on the ground water systems at one of the coal basins in the Appalachian region. The primary objective was to provide reliable information for determining the local and possibly the regional effects of longwall mining on well yields, and the hydraulic and hydrogeochemical parameters of the immediate surface and subsurface water resources.
