The electromagnetic levitation technique has been successfully applied to rate studies of the de-carburization of liquid Fe-C alloys from 5.5 to zero pct C at 1660°C using gas mixtures containing 1 to 100 pct CO2 with CO or helium as diluents. The rate was shown to be independent of carbon concen -tration in the melt and only slightly affected by total pressure. The results were shown to be consistent with control either wholly or predominantly by gaseous diffusion. As well as avoiding side reactions with the crucible, levitation allowed precise calculation of reaction rates since the geometry of the system was accurately known. It also enabled interpretation using the established mass-transfer correlations for a gas flowing past a single sphere, The existence of gaseous-diffusion control and the extremely high rates of reaction reported for gas flowing past small spheres are of great practical significance in relation to current investigations into the use of spray-refining techniques in continzcous steelmaking. PREVIOUS work on the kinetics of carbon removal from liquid iron has generally involved the use of oxygen as the gaseous oxidant. Investigations have been made on commercial steelmaking furnaces and in addition laboratory-scale experiments have been attempted with a slag phase present. The general lack of agreement and the obvious difficulty in interpreting the results is at least partly due to the complexity of the systems used. This work has been reviewed by carter1 and more recently by Bods-worth2 and ward.3 The gas-liquid metal reactions have also been studied with slag-free melts by the conventional technique of blowing oxygen onto the melt contained in a crucible. The reaction between the oxidant and carbon could be followed by sampling either the melt or the gas phase. Side reactions with the crucible material have precluded direct interpretation of the results. Fujii, 5-7 using O-A mixtures, attempted to correct for the crucible reaction and reported that the reaction between carban and oxygen occurred at the melt surface and was controlled by gaseous diffusion for carbon contents greater than a critical value and by carbon-diffusion control in the metal for carbon contents less than the critical. The critical value was given as approximately 0.15 pct C. However, whereas this was the case for oxygen contents in the gas stream up to 10 pct, between 10 and 20 pct the rate was found to be approximately independent of oxygen content, and Fujii attempted to explain this observation by postulating the presence of an oxide "film".7 Turkdogan et a1.' have studied iron fuming during decarburizing and suggested gaseous-diffusion control of the reaction above a critical carbon concentration, given as approximately 2 pct C. Filippov9-12 reports in a similar manner to Fujii but makes no mention of the crucible reaction with the carbon in the melt, even though this would be expected with the temperature, crucible material (MgO), and carbon contents used. Both CO2 and O2 were used as oxidant gases. In the present work the decarburization of liquid Fe-C alloys was studied using an adaptation of the electromagnetic levitation technique, and thus the complexities introduced by crucible side reactions were eliminated. In this technique a single sphere of the Fe-C alloy is freely suspended and heated by electromagnetic induction in a flowing stream containing the oxidant gas. The full range of carbon levels up to saturation was studied, the temperature of the melts in this instance being held constant at 1660°C. The oxidant was CO2 which was used either pure or in association with a diluent gas, the total gas pressure being maintained either at 1 atm or at a reduced pressure. A PRIMARY substitutional solid solution is a solution that has the same crystalline structure as the solvent metal, and in which solute atoms have replaced solvent atoms at random on the host lattice. This replacement usually results in an increase in hardness as measured by conventional penetration tests. The factors controlling this hardness increase have been investigated in some detail for copper and silver aneys.1-5 It has been shown that at least, four factors are involved: (I) concentration of solute, (2) row of the periodic table from which the solute is taken, (3) increase in lattice parameter of the solvent produced by the solute, and (4) work-hardening produced by penetration of the hardness indenter.2,4 The last factor is of the utmost importance. An investigation of the available data2.4 leads to the conclusion that the solutes that produce large hardness increases in copper or silver do so principally because they increase the rate of work-hardening. Furthermore, it is doubtful whether any solute produces appreciable hardening in the absence of plastic deformation and hence work-hardening. Thus it is clear that an understanding of the effect of solutes on rate of work hardening is essential to an understanding of the hardness of solid solutions. This effect of solutes is also important in forming operations such as rolling or deep drawing. The presence of elements that confer rapid rates of work-hardening will increase power consumption and may well decrease the amount of deformation possible between anneals. This paper is the report of an investigation of the factors that control rates of work-hardening in copper and silver solid solutions. The silver and copper alloys considered are those in which all solutes are from the B subgroups or second short period of the periodic table. Experience with hardness, with structure of alloys, and with electrical conductivity has proved that results of a fundamental nature are most likely to be obtained if alloys are made up on the basis of the positions of the constituent elements in the periodic table. In previous work, Meyer analysis data on high-purity copper and silver solid solutions were obtained through careful measurements with fully calibrated equipment and these data were corrected to correspond to a standard grain size. From these corrected Meyer analysis data rates of work-hardening have now been calculated. THE objective of this investigation was to determine the high-temperature plastic deformation behavior of stoichiometric uranium mononitride as a function of stress and temperature. Interest in the properties of this material stems from its potential use in high-temperature nuclear reactor systems. The creep of other refractory compounds containing uranium (e.g., U02, UC) has been studied by various investigators.1"4 Fassler et al.4 have studied the creep of UN in vacuum from 1100° to 1350°C at stresses of 6000 and 8000 psi. In the present work, the creep of stoichiometric UN was investigated from 1500° to 1800°C at stresses from 2000 to 5000 psi in a partial pressure of 200 mm of nitrogen. The specimens were prepared by hot isostatic pressing of UN powder into cylinders of $ in. diam by about 1 in. high. After pressing, the specimens were heat-treated in nitrogen at 1900°C for 50 hr. The densities of individual specimens were determined by the water displacement method. All specimens were theoretically dense, based on a value of 14.32 g per cu cm.5 Principal metallic impurities in ppm by weight were: Ca, 50; Cu, 5; Fe, 30; Mg, 5; Ni, 10; and Si, 20. Oxygen content was 400 ± 50 pprn and carbon content was 100 i25 ppm. The nitrogen content was 5.56 ±0.05 wt pct. The average grain size for five specimens, as determined by the intercept method, was 0.14 i 0.01 mm. One specimen had a grain size of 2.0 mm. This large grain size is an anomaly, since all specimens had the same chemical and thermal histories. Specimens of 1/4 in. diam by 1/2 in. high were creep-tested in compression in a clam shell furnace heated by W-25 pct Re sheet elements. Temperature was measured to ilODC by an optical pyrometer which had been calibrated by a standard source. The distance between fiducial marks on the specimen was measured before placement into the furnace. The furnace chamber was evacuated to 10-5 Torr and back-filled to 200 mm N2. After heating rapidly to temperature, the load was applied and controlled to ±2 pct by an Instron testing machine. Upon initial loading, the specimen was deformed until a constant crosshead rate was obtained, then quenched to room temperature, remeasured, and replaced in the furnace. Upon subsequent reloading at temperature, the crosshead rate was constant for the selected condition indicating steady-state creep.

Reaching the miner with safety education" is R the ultimate goal, the main objective, of every safety program in the mining industry. If we can get safety education to every worker, and it is properly learned, enforced and obeyed, we should eliminate at least 85% of all potential accidents. We should then have very few accidents as a result of unsafe behavior, which, in turn, would allow us to concentrate most of our future efforts on preventing the types of accidents which are caused by faulty or defective machinery, equipment, tools and materials. An uninformed or uninitiated person would think that it should be a rather simple process to reach the miner with a safety education. Theoretically he would be right because here we get involved in a matter of semantics. When we say "reaching the miner with safety education" we actually mean that this education must also be accepted and learned by the miner; we intend to mean that safety must be observed and followed at all times. But in order to realize our complete meaning of the phrase, we must find the solution for a number of problems and obstacles which are well known to management and safety personnel.

THE four nomograms presented in this article were designed to simplify and make more, rapid the calculations connected with the compression and transmission of air. The formulae involved are rather complicated, but the graphic solutions are simple; their use requires an ability to follow explicit directions and to interpolate values on a logarithmic scale. ? For the sake of convenience, the nomograms will be divided into two classes, and the purpose and accuracy of each will be discussed. Compression It is frequently desirable to determine the horsepower necessary to compress a given amount of free air from atmospheric pressure to a certain final pressure. The nomograms in Figs. 1 and 2 present a rapid method of calculating the horsepower required to compress 1 cu. ft. of free air per minute by single or two-stage compression. The general formula for the horsepower required to compress air adiabatically is: HP = S X 144/33,000 PVn/(n-1) [(P'/P) n-1/Sn -1] (1) where: P = absolute atmospheric pressure at compressor, in pounds per square inch. P' = final absolute pressure of compressed air, in pounds per square inch. V = volume of free air compressed per minute, in cubic feet. S = number of stages. n = exponent of the compression curve.

THIS paper outlines a time-saving graphical method of calculation for application to the interpretation of observations with the Eötvös torsion balance. Preliminary to the treatment of this short cut method which has been found practicable, the principal formu-las by which the student of interpretation can calculate the gradient and differential curvature produced by different types of bodies in different types of situa-tions are presented and discussed. It is necessary to split most geologic bodies into a series of simpler ones for which not too complicated formulas are avail-able. The gradient and differential curvature effects are calculated for each of the simple bodies and then summed to the total effect for the whole body. The calculations are considerable in number and, though more tedious than difficult, should be' entrusted to an experienced calculator. Considerable facility in qualitative interpretation can be acquired by the geophysicist from experience and from a thorough study of the types of gradient and differential curvature anomalies produced by the dif-ferent types of possible structural situations. How-ever, semi-quantitative calculations' of the probable structure bring out many relations that are not evident in a simple inspection of torsion balance results ; it throws out as impossible or improbable certain of the alternative structural possibilities that may seem equally probable under simple inspection of the results; it will determine more accurately the position of the crest of the structure; and reduce considerably the un-certainty in the interpretation and it is necessary to intelligent interpretations. The calculation of such cross-sections consists of a trial-and-error calculation of a body that will give gradient and differential curvature effects as closely as possible the same as those observed. From his knowledge of the gradient and differential curvature produced by different types of bodies, the geophysicist sketches a tentative cross-section of the structure as indicated-to him-by the observed results of the torsion balance survey, and the calculator then splits the struc-ture into blocks, and calculates the gradient and differ-ential curvature block by block. If, as rather usual, the calculated .gradient and differential curvature pro-files diverge considerably from, the respective observed ones, it is necessary to add and subtract blocks from the cross-section until a close agreement is obtained .between the calculated and observed profiles. The com-plete calculations have to be gone through for each block that is added or subtracted.

Nickel, copper, and elemental sulfur can be recovered from a low-grade pyrrhotitepentlandite type concentrate by leaching with HNO3 in a pressure reactor at moderate temperature and pressure. The bulk of iron is converted to an oxide. Same results can be achieved by leaching in an open vessel under a reflex condenser for an extended period of time.

SINCE I have mentioned the art of alchemy in. many parts of this treatise of mine, especially when 'came to the description of the practice of various operations,* I do not here intend to argue as to whether it may be called true or not. But in case it is true, inasmuch as it is seen in operation to be a result dependent on the actions and virtues of fires, I should not pass by in silence without speaking at all of this art here, nor would I wish to do so, especially since I think that you do not really know what it is except in so far as common report is heard everywhere to the effect that whoever carries it to completion makes silver and gold with it. Because of this belief, many seek it with much time, labor, and expense, as I know you have often heard related, if not elsewhere, by me in the chapter on gold that I have written in this volume. Now do not think that I wish to teach you this art here, for I am one of those who do not know it. Therefore I shall tell you here, so that you may know more, only. that those workers who so eagerly follow after and seek it proceed by just two pathways. One is that which takes its enlightenment from the words of the wise philosophers, by means of which they think to attain it. This they call the just, holy, and good way, and they, say that in this they are but imitators and assistants of Nature, indeed, manipulators and true physicians-of .mineral bodies, purging them of superfluities and assisting them by augmenting their virtue and freeing them from their defects. In this way they sometimes proceed to corrupt these bodies in order to be able to separate the elements they contain so as to reduce them, if possible, to their primary materials, as they call them, or sometimes they convert them into new substances by means of this art or by adding another spirit different from the first one. Thus they seek in this way to bring these materials to a certain point of corruption or to a separation of elements, or to remove or add spirits to things, or to make coarse materials subtle and sometimes to make subtle materials coarse. Therefore, as you can understand, these persons, with bridle broken, run a circular track night and day, without ever having rest; and surely I do not know whether anyone has ever arrived at the desired goal. A TREMENDOUS volume of the metal rolled annually into sheets, strips and coil stock finds its way to a host of stamping and manufacturing plants which are the quantity production units of the country. Considerable in volume, too, are the rolled and extruded rods which go into forging and manufacturing plants for conversion into the same general line: those widely sold metallic necessities and luxuries of the household, the office, transportation, farming and building construction. Yet, in spite of its age and its importance, the stamping trade has been doing its "engineering" largely by trial and error. Its distinctive method is shearing out and plastically working metal to finished shape in a few quick strokes with high loads and expensive tools which are warranted only by large quantities to be produced. The principal operations have many features in common with rolling and wire-drawing methods. Combinations of stresses are different, however, and details of operations are infinite in variety. An engineering study of the subject begins with stress analysis, but must go back to metallurgy for its foundation. A grouping of pressed-metal working operations according to whether the metal is (1) sheared, (2) bent, (3) drawn or (4) squeezed has proved useful. All of these groups include instances of both hot and cold operations. For discussions of metal working properties, the division between hot and cold working is taken as the recrystallization range of temperature. This, of course, brings tin, lead and often zinc into the hot-work range at or near room temperature. The outstanding hot-working press field is in forging: particularly of brass; all of which is included in the squeezing group.

SUMMARY THE possibility of colloidal deposition of cinnabar has been neglected. In opalite deposits cinnabar exists in particles within or near the colloidal size range. Colloidal processes have been admitted to be operative in hot springs and low-temperature deposits similar to most cinnabar deposits. Mercuric sulphide sols are stable to elevated temperature and pressure, and in nature probably are chiefly affected by the electrolytes in solution, dilution of colloid, and presence of protective colloids as silica. The stability of mercuric sulphide sols to electrolyte is measured, and shown to be greatly increased by dilution and by the protective action of silica. Mercuric sulphide sols follow the Schulze-Hardy valency rule, therefore the precipitating power of complex mixtures of electrolytes can be computed roughly. The stability of mercuric sulphide sols is shown to be greater than the equivalent precipitating power of the electrolytes in a hot spring depositing mercuric sulphide. It is concluded that finely divided or earthy types of cinnabar are colloidally deposited. POSSIBILITY OF COLLODIAL DEPOSITION While colloidal solution has been suggested as a means of transport for a number of minerals, such as the sulphides of antimony, arsenic, and iron, it has been neglected in connection with mercury. This is surprising because there exists positive evidence that cinnabar is present in certain deposits in particles of colloidal or near colloidal size. Colloidal transport could result from either the rapid dilution or neutralization of alkaline sulphide solution bearing mercury coming in contact with deep ground waters, or from colloidal solution near the original source and subsequent flow to the point of deposition unchanged. That the dilution of a mercuric alkaline sulphide solution will precipitate mercury sulphide in colloidal form has been demonstrated a number of times and is easily confirmed. The dilution hydrolyzes the alkaline sulphide Na2S to the corresponding hydroxide and hydrosulphide NaOH and NaHS, and the diminution of the concentration of alkaline sulphide reduces the solubility. It is not the contention of this writer that colloidal deposition is the mode of transport of mercuric sulphide in all mercury deposits, but that the stability of a mercuric sulphide sol, as demonstrated below, in waters that are similar to those that have deposited mercuric sulphide necessitates consideration of this possibility in many deposits, especially those of the hot-spring and so-called opalite type. EVIDENCE OF COLLOIDAL DEPOSITION Ross1 has shown that most deposits of quicksilver are formed at low temperatures and pressures, and probably by solutions that have relatively simple chemical compositions. In most cases the solutions are probably similar to those observed in hot springs, and in two instances-at Steamboat Springs, Nevada, and Sulphur Bank, California-hot springs have been reported by Becker as actually depositing cinnabar.2 Opalite deposits were believed by early investigators to be surface phenomena

THERE are about sixty bodies which chemists call elements ; the simplest forms of matter which they have been able to extract from the rocky crust of our earth, its waters, and its atmosphere. These substances are distributed in very unequal quantities, and in very different manners. As regards the frequency of these elements in nature, neglecting for the present those which constitute air and water, and confining ourselves to the solid matters of the earth's crust, there are a few which are exceedingly abundant, making up nine-tenths, if not ninety-five hundredths, of the rocks so far as known to us. The elements of which silica, alumina, lime, magnesia, potash, and soda are oxides, are very common, and occur almost everywhere. There are others which are much rarer, being found in comparatively small quantities. Many of these rarer elements are, however, of great importance in the economy of nature. Such are the common metals and other substances used in the arts, which occur in nature in quantities relatively very minute, but which have been collected by various agencies, and thus made available for the wants of man. It is chiefly of the well-known metals, iron, copper, silver, and gold, that I propose to speak to-night ; but there are two other elements not classed among the metals, which I shall notice for the reason that their history is extremely important, and will, moreover, enable , us to comprehend more clearly some points in that of the metals themselves. ALL the domestic. production of magnesite during 1925 came from two states, California and Washington. Of a total of 120,660 tons of crude ore, 64,600 tons, or 54 per cent., were produced in California.1 Of .this quantity California produced about 99 per cent. of the caustic calcined, but only 10 per cent. of the dead-burned. The largest producer was C. S. Maltby, of San Francisco, who operated the Red Mountain mine, in Santa Clara County, and the Sampson mine, in San Benito County, under lease. These two mines have been studied by the author, and offer interesting comparisons as to mining and treatment methods and final products. GEOLOGY The general geology of the magnesite deposits of California has been described by Hess,2 Bain3 and others,4 and although a detailed discussion is not necessary here, a brief summary will assist in understanding mining conditions. California magnesite, when comparatively pure, is usually a white, fine-grained rock, with a conchoidal fracture, occurring in veins and lense-like masses in serpentine. The veins vary considerably in width, and usually occur in a series of more or less parallel veins intersected by other series or systems of veins, probably following original or secondary fissures in the enclosing serpentine. The most generally accepted theory of origin is that the magnesite was formed by the action of surface waters charged with C02 percolating downward through fissures and changing the magnesium silicates of the serpentine into magnesium carbonate.

An analytical method is developed to determine the variation of the ultimate lateral resistance of a plate in a cohesionless soil with depth. This analysis is based on a modification of Rankine's classical earth pressure theory and the theory of plasticity as applied to soils. The ultimate resistance is defined as the product of the effective stress at the midpoint of the plate, the area of the plate and a dimensionless variable termed the ultimate resistance factor. This variable has been plotted us the depth ratio: i.e., the ratio of of the depth of embedment us the height of the plate. The resistance of a plate may then be calculated using the values af the ultimate resistance factor from the chart provided or the equation may be programmed for use in an analysis of anchor systems in cohesionless soils. It is emphasized that the analysis is semitheoretical. The theory has been compared with experimental results reported in the literature and results indicate general agreement. Actual field tests are necessary to further verify this theory. INTRODUCTION With the exploration for oil offshore in waters all over the world, it is of importance to determine the behavior of the various soils in relation to their ultimate resistance to deformation. Examples of such problems are the holding capacity of anchors and the lateral resistance of piles. Very little information is available in the published literature on the design and performance of anchors, in either cohesive or cohesionless soils. The analysis developed in this report is the first step in obtaining a solution for the determination of anchor holding capacity in a cohesionless material. DISCUSSION The theory used in the analysis is based on the ultimate strength of the soil and is the maximum resistance developed by the plate against further movement. In such a state the elastic deformations are disregarded in comparison with the plastic deformations. Hence, the plate can be considered as completely rigid. The theory of plasticity determines the three unknown stresses at any point by means of two equilibrium conditions for a small earth element in combination with the failure condition. However, the exact solutions can only be carried out in a few simple cases such as, for example, when the rupture or failure lines are straight (Rankine theory) or with spiral and straight rupture lines (Prandtl theory).l Kiitter 2 derived a single equation expressing the variation of the stress in any given rupture line. To utilize this equation, it is necessary to know the stress in the rupture line at a certain point. Unfortunately, this is difficult to obtain unless the rupture line intersects the free surface at a certain angle or when the earth is cohesion-less and unloaded. A method to overcome this is to consider only the boundary conditions at both ends of a rupture line without investigating the equilibrium of the earth above the rupture line. This assumes that the rupture lines meet the surface at statically correct angles, so that boundary stresses may be determined. As Kiitter's equation furnished a relation between these stresses, the unit earth pressure may be calculated at the point where the rupture line meets the wall. Another way in which Kotter's equation may be applied is in investigating the equilibrium of a soil mass above a rupture line. This method assumes that the failure or rupture line is known and that the boundary stresses in the rupture line at the ground surface can be determined. In this case it is possible to determine the earth pressure from the equations of equilibrium.

HOT-DIPPED heat-treated zinc coatings on sheet steel were examined with X-rays. The phases identified were compared with those listed in the modern literature of the zinc-iron system. The zeta (FeZn13) phase is shown to correspond to the phase found by Schueler (1925) in heat-treated zinc coatings. An investigation was undertaken to determine the phases present in hot-dipped FIG. I.-SYSTEM IRON-ZINC ACCORDING TO J. SCHRAMM.11 heat-treated zinc coatings on steel sheets and wire. This kind of coating on wire was studied some years ago by Schueler1 by microscopic and chemical methods. He reported a new phase, FeZn10. Later, Clark and Stillwell,2 using X-ray crystal analysis, identified a new phase in ordinary galva-nized wire, which was assumed to be the FeZn10 phase.

The hot-working of iron and steel is an art dating back to antiquity, but until about 25 years ago, relatively few alloying elements were used, and these were present only in small percentages. With the exception of sulphur, the amounts of other elements in steels did not markedly affect their hot-workability. The references in the literature on the effect of other elements on the hot-workability of steel are usually reports of failure of these steels in forging or rolling.1-8 With the increased use of alloying elements, and their use in larger amounts, it was observed that many of the new steels were red short in certain critical ranges or at all hot-working temperatures. The stainless steels are particularly difficult to hot-work. The determining of the correct conditions for piercing, rolling and forging of these alloys by experimentation in the mill often results in large losses of these expensive metals. It also is found that the hot-workability limits of many types vary from heat to heat, and hence poor results are obtained on changing to a new heat after a previous one has rolled satisfactorily. To determine the effect on hot-workability of iron to which various elements have been added, it was necessary to devise a method that could be used on small quantities of metal. In such a method, the minimum number of variables should be present, and the procedure should be simple, quick and correlatable with large-scale hot-working operations. Sauveur,9 in the first Henry Marion Howe lecture in 1924, described the effect of carbon on the ductility of steels in torsion near their critical points. He found that carbon increases the plasticity of gamma iron. In the 1930 Campbell Memorial lecture,10 he gives the effect of carbon, chromium, and chromium and nickel on the ductility of steels under 2000°F. in torsion. Ellis11 has studied the malleability of steels at various elevated temperatures by means of a single-blow drop-hammer test. In this test the percentage decrease in height of standard cylinders is taken as a measure of their malleability. He has shown that in the low-alloy steels studied, carbon has a greater effect than nickel, chromium and vanadium. In 1938 the first tests were run on a new quantitative hot-workability test in the laboratories of the Globe Steel Tubes CO. Thum12 mentioned it in 1940. An illustration of the apparatus was published in January 1942.'' The effect of a few alloying elements on the hot-workability of metals was shown in a description of the test in 1944.14 Description of Test Method The method adopted after a trial of several others is a rapid twisting of bars to failure in a furnace. Theoretically mobile primary crushers at the mine working face can be considered the ideal comminution system. A crusher which follows the ore can reduce materials handling costs because it eliminates about one ton of truck deadweight per ton of ore hauled to the crusher. It also eliminates the backhaul of this same deadweight ton. Development of mobile primary crushers has centered in Germany where many soft iron ore and limestone deposits are flat-lying and thus readily adaptable to the use of shiftable conveyors which easily followed the working face. These ores were easily crushed in impact- type mills which had extremely large receiving openings and therefore large reduction ratios. The feeding of such a unit was done with a front-end loader which dumped its load to an inclined apron feeder, which in turn fed the impactor. Under the crusher was an inclined conveyor which transferred the crushed ore to a belt wagon for delivery to the shiftable overland conveyor. Low headroom overhead eccentric single-toggle jaw crushers and short-shaft gyratories were also used on these units, which generally travelled on tracks. While these early mobile primary crushers were versatile and served their purpose, they generally suffered from low capacities. Manufacturers have quickly responded with larger crusher, feeders, and moveable supports, however; and today mobile crusher s have capacities of up to 1500 metric tons per hour, a figure comparable to the capacity of some 54 in. by 74 in. gyratories. An example of a quarry portable crushing plant is at the Bath cement plant of Canada Cement Lafarge, Limited. Two 12 cu yd front-end loaders are digging the stone and hauling it to the portable crushing plant which feeds a field conveyor system. The crushing plant is moved and the field conveyors extended whenever the length of the haul exceeds 300 ft. At the crushing plant, the loaders discharge the stone onto a pan feeder which feeds into the hopper of a Weserhutte-Hazemag compound crusher which combines primary and secondary rotors in the same housing. These are driven at 1200 rpm by 800 hp and 1,000 hp motors (600 and 750 kw). The maximum 3 ft feed (914 mm) is reduced to 3/4 in. (19 mm) at 800 tph. The Weserhutte steered walking mechanism, operated by hydraulic cylinders, takes five -foot strides. Another example is at Alcoa of Australia's operation at Huntley in Western Australia. At the mine face, front-end loaders load 50 mt rear-dump trucks that transport the bauxite ore to the mobile crusher which follows the mine operation.
