ThE superior performance of nonsag tungsten wire in lamps has been ascribed to the large-grained micro-structure that can be developed in it. The orientations of these large grains have been studied several times; most published data1-' appear to be similar to those plotted in Fig. 1. These new data were obtained by X-ray back-reflection Laue technique from all of the large grains occurring in thirteen different wires that had been heated at the lowest possible temperature for the formation of large grains. Here the wire axis is plotted in terms of the principal directions of the cube. Rosi decided that the preferred orientation of the large crystals could be described by a single ideal orientation, (531), being parallel to the wire axis.' Rieck2,3 and Mannerkoski' have essentially confirmed this finding. Opinsky, Orehotsky, and Seigle argued that the data suggest that (211) is parallel to the wire axis instead of a single ideal orientation.5 This {211} contains the (531) ideal orientation and would appear to be a more general case. Ahlborn and Wassermann report that their orientation data stretch from ( 110) through (531) to (311) 8 This is part of the locus of (211). All these investigators have determined the orientations of the large grains by back-reflection Laue techniques. They have all obtained essentially similar results. On the other hand, Swalin and Geisler, who obtained their data by neutron diffraction, indicated that the preferred orientation of the large grains in doped wire is (110) .7 These findings cannot presently be reconciled with the pole density data described in the previous paragraph. Rosi1 and Rieck2 have advanced arguments about how their orientations could occur. Nevertheless, the crystallographic link between the (110) (cold-worked) fiber texture and the preferred orientation of the large grains has remained missing. This link can be provided through the concept of coincidence-type boundaries. Such boundaries separate two grains that have a certain number of common lattice sites. Coincidence relationships that result from rotations about low index directions are given by Brandon et a1 .' What is desired is a calculation of those orientations that bear a coincidence relationship with the (110) fibers of the cold-worked matrix. This situation arises in the following fashion. Heating the tungsten wire for a combination of time and temperature falling short of the formation of the nonsag structure yields a structure that is still fibrous in nature and the preferred orientation remains (110). During grain growth, the growing grain is in contact with these fibers. It is hence possible that the entire process may begin by the passage of a coincidence boundary into a (110) fiber. The calculations were carried out analytically and checked graphically. Following Brandon et a1.,8 coincidence relationships from 1 in 5 to 1 in 19 have been considered. The results of the calculations are given in Fig. 2. Of the coincidences examined, some of those occurring upon rotation about ( 110) come closest to the experimental points in Fig. 1. Nineteen of the twenty-three data points in Fig. 1 can be attributed to the ideal orientations A, B, C, and D in Fig. 2. As determined analytically, three crystals lie within 4 deg of point A, four lie within 21/2 deg of point B, eleven lie within 5 deg of point C, and one lies within 1 deg of point D-a total of nineteen. The off-lying points are near the |110| point of the triangle.

ACCORDING to recently published statistics, it is predicted that as much oil must be produced during the next 16 years as has been produced during the past 75, in order to satisfy the high rate of consumption of petroleum products. During 1934, over 17,000 oil wells were completed in the United States, and it is expected that over 20,000 additional wells will be drilled during the current year. Were it not for the remarkable progress made during recent years in the improvement of drilling technique and in the development of equipment used in the production phase of the oil industry, it is doubtful whether sufficient oil could be produced to meet present requirements. A few years ago, wells seldom were deeper than 3500 to 4000 ft., owing to the limitations of the drilling methods and equipment employed. Today, however, through the application of scientific drilling methods and the adaptation of modern equipment and improved materials, many wells range from 6000 to 8000 ft. in depth, and a few recent completions exceed 10,000 feet.

The well method of producing oil and gas is universally used in the development and operation of oil and gas properties. It consists essentially in the spacing of a number of wells on a given tract, and in drilling and operating them in accordance with established practices. The method is based on a fundamental energy principle. This principle governs the state and the change of state of fluids or fluid mixtures confined under pressure within a porous and permeable reservoir in such a way as to direct a flow from the reservoir into and out of a drilled well with a reduction of potential energy. The application of the well method of producing oil has given data which prove that the total yield of oil from a reservoir through wells is, in general, only a small fractional part of the total oil that is contained in the reservoir. It is generally recognized that a spacing of one well to each 160-acre tract of any good oil pool is too wide. However, one well to this 160-acre tract will yield a large quantity of oil and in time will dissipate most, if not all, of the potential energy that was originally stored and retained in the fluids by pressure. Two wells spaced and drilled on this 160-acre tract would yield approximately twice the quantity of oil, while four wells would yield approximately four times the oil. A well spacing is soon reached, with the addition of wells to this 160-acre tract, in which the drainage interference of offset wells will materially affect the yield of oil per well. The increased yield of oil, therefore, is not directly proportional to the added number of wells but the increased costs of development are directly proportional to the added number of wells. It is evident that while an added number of wells to this 160-acre tract yields an increased quantity of oil, there is an economic limit to the number of wells to be added. THE magnetic iron ores of the Rees & Wilder tract, Unaka Mountains, East Tennessee, and North Carolina, so far as examined by me, are peculiar in containing considerable quantities of the mineral zircon in dark red-brown crystals, ranging in size from one-tenth of an inch, or less, to five-tenths of an inch in length. As zircons are decomposed by fusion with alkalies, the constituents may exert some favorable influence upon the iron product, which is generally acknowledged to be of superior quality. THE migration of carbon in austenite under the influence of an electric current has been observed qualitatively several times.14 Lebedev and Guterman5 recently have reported quantitative measurements; their method consisted of welding a low-carbon to a high-carbon wire, passing current, and later estimating the carbon distribution metal-lographically. We believe the method reported in this paper is superior in principle since electrolytic migration and ordinary diffusion are not necessarily coupled as in the weld method; also for the first time the extent of migration is determined by combustion analysis for carbon. A uniform tubular specimen (S.A.E. 1045 or 1095) was mounted as illustrated in the figures. the whole assembly being in an atmosphere of purified nitrogen. Direct current (129 to 226 amp at 0.65 to 1.0 v) served as source both of heat and of potential gradient for carbon migration. The duration of experiment was 7.5 to 12 hr, during which time the temperature was controlled (±10°C) manually. The experimental conditions are indicated in the first five columns of table I. With this experimental arrangement, the temperature initially has a maximum value at the central plane. Also, in this vicinity (by virtue of the symmetry), the carbon entering any volume element is equal in quantity to that leaving; the loss or accumulation of carbon occurs near the electrodes since the carbon moves uniformly near the center and is "frozen" at the cold ends. Hence, providing the time of experiment is not sufficiently long to seriously influence the conditions at the central plane, carbon crosses this plane only under the influence of the electrical potential gradient and not under the influence of temperature or concentration gradient. The amount of carbon which has crossed this plane was determined by combustion analysis of the two halves of the specimen. The results of these analyses are shown in the sixth and seventh columns of table I. It will be noted that substantial amounts of carbon migrated from the anode portion to the cathode portion (except at 920°C, which temperature was too low to exhibit the effect in the allotted time). In spite of precau-tions taken, considerable decarburization occurred as may be seen by comparing cols. 8 and 5. In three cases (indicated by asterisks in table I) the specimen was ground on one side, polished, and examined metallographically before analysis. One specimen was normalized and re-examined. Micrographs of selected areas in specimens 4 and 6 are shown in figs. 1 and 2, respectively. Evidence of carbon migration from the anode toward the cathode is quite apparent. Fig. 2 shows abundant graphite as well as cementite in a region near the cathode. The temperature of this zone is estimated at about 800°C. In fig. 1, particularly in the micrograph on the extreme right (the right side of which is of unaltered carbon content), there is evidence of slight depletion of carbon in the immediate vicinity of the cathode as contrasted to the general increase in carbon of the cathode half of the specimen. Although this may be attributed in part to decarbur-ization, it is believed that it is occasioned also by thermal diffusion—migration (of carbon) from a cool to a hot zone4—a phenomenon superimposed upon the electrical migration. PROBABLY everyone is well aware that from April 1 to September 11, 1922, anthracite production was completely suspended; during those 163 days not one ton of coal was produced in the anthracite region. The production loss was about 30 million tons, and although production is now at its peak, there is no possible way by. which, within any short space of time, that deficiency can be made up. During that time the miners sacrificed in wages something over 100 million dollars. The anthracite companies paid out in cash, keeping their mines in condition to operate when mining should be resumed, something like 30 million dollars without taking in one cent of revenue. The tonnage of domestic sizes included in that lost output was about 21 million tons. The anthracite operators figured that between September 11, 1922, and March 31, 1923, they would possibly be able to produce about 60 per cent. of the tonnage that was mined the preceding year, that is, from April 1, 1921, to March 31, 1922. The problem then arose as to how that tonnage could be distributed equitably throughout the United States and Canada. We had in our records in Phila-delphia the distribution by communities, about 20,000 of them, to which anthracite had been shipped during the last five years, so that we were well posted as to what each community should be entitled to receive. We allotted to each of those 20,000 communities 60 per cent. of the tonnage that it had received during the preceding coal year, and we have endeavored to see that whatever tonnage we have been able to produce should be equitably distributed on that basis. It was a matter simply of voluntary cooperation by the anthra-cite operators who placed the distribution of their tonnage practically in the hands of the Pennsylvania Fuel Commission; the anthracite companies have almost without exception acceded to every request that we have made of them. When communities were reported entirely out of coal, a telegram or letter to the directors obligated to that community has resulted in some anthracite being shipped there, so that we have thus far kept the distribution on a fairly equitable basis. Prior to the suspension of mining operations, pre-liminary negotiations were carried on for the renewal of the wage scale, the operators thinking that it could be adjusted satisfactorily, and that the same method of procedure would be followed as during the 20 years succeeding the strike of 1902. At every termination of the wage agreement since that date, until last year, an agreement had been reached early in the season that mining operations should be continued, with the under-standing that any new agreement should be retroactive to April 1. At the meeting of the committees of anthra-cite operators and miners, on March 21, 1922, the opera-tors were presented with an ultimatum by the miners to the effect that unless an agreement were reached within ten days, mining operations would cease. That was protested against by the committee of operators as being unfair, not only to the operators and the public but to the men themselves. In spite of this protest the suspension occurred and, as you know, continued until September 11.

While a country is small and its coal fields are not many, it may be possible to classify its coals on some basis that avoids both overlap and inconsistency, and that may be satisfactory to the particular country, such as geographic distribution or geologic age, or regional uses. In the adjoining country, however, the coals may differ more or less; broad areas may have escaped the erasure of transition zones by erosion, and the stages of alteration of the coals may lead to a classification different from and even incompatible with that of the other country. Such classifications, developed primarily along national lines, are essentially opportunistic. Further, many even of the "use" terms that have been in more common employment with a degree of international application have lost their significance and value, due to changes in industrial methods and urban life. When the number of coal fields is large and the classification is designed to cover the coals of many countries, the groups or divisions into which the coals are integrated are found to verge one into another; and, though the main divisions may be so naturally composed and oriented that they are relatively distinct and readily separated as entities or units when taken by themselves, the sequence, through classes, groups, and subdivisions, is so complete that we find transition zones through which boundaries must be arbitrarily drawn with minute technical definition. This situation, which is conspicuously illustrated in the United States, is due to the progressive evolution of all coals, irrespective of geologic age, from peats to successively higher ranks, which, if the progressive alteration goes far enough, ends with graphite. This evolution is now firmly established and its complete acceptance is but a matter of time. A classification of all coals in all coal fields can not escape this fact and must take into account all the stages in the transformation of the fuel from rank to rank through division to division, and through group to group. The plan here outlined aims at a natural classification of coals based on their evolution from peats to graphite. As in other classifications, the differentiation of the various groups and divisions takes account of changes resulting from the progressive losses of moisture and .of oxygen of constitution; the relative conservation of carbon; the progressive increase in fixed carbon (inverse to the loss of volatile matter) in

Since the mid-1930's a number of plants, using the principles of heavy media separation, have been installed throughout the world. In cases involving lead, zinc or lead-zinc ores the reasons for the choice of this type of beneficiation process have fallen into four major categories: A) The economic recovery of additional distinctly separate products, such as dolomite limestone at the Mascot Plant (1) of the American Zinc Co., and the ferrosilicon produced by St. Joseph Lead Company. (2) B) The elimination of a large portion of run-of-the-mine ore prior to grinding and flotation, to allow increased throughput with low capital cost. Examples of this approach are the Levante and Ponente plants of the Montevecchio Company in Italy (3) and the frequent choice of the Sink-Float process by the Penarroya Company of Paris. C) The processing of a sedimentary deposit, in which the valuable mineral is contained in the matrix separating the boulders, as was the case at the St. Joseph Lead Company plant at Haydon Creek (4) and also at Bunker Hill Mining and Smelting, Kellogg, Idaho. D) The simplification of Around support programs in mines by allowing greater freedom of action in the extractive pattern. An example of this choice is Cominco’s Sullivan plant which came into being as part of an extensive proposal to update the mining, crushing, transportation, grinding and beneficiation processes. (5)

With the exception of eight wildcat completions, which were unsuccessful and abandoned, all of the 1935 new drilling was performed in the proven fields. As of Dec. 31, 1935, 22 drilling rigs were in operation, of which 9 were at wildcat locations and the remainder were being used in new drilling in proven fields; in addition, 25 workover rigs (exclusive of cleanout rigs) were operating, all in the major fields. Production of Crude Oil.—Notwithstanding the considerable decrease in new completions during 1935 as compared with 1934, crude production mounted to a new high of 148,893,225 bbl., clean oil at 60' F., representing an increase of 12,532,579 bbl. over the previous record year, 1934, total of 136,360,646 bbl. The Institute has established this lectureship to honor the memory of a great American metallurgist, one whose fame has continued long after his passing. As one scientist recently stated it, "All metallurgical texts gradually become outdated and outmoded, except those of the great Henry Marion Howe." It seems fitting, then, that, once every year, we shouId review, in his honor, some aspects of the science in which he was such a distinguished leader, and also discuss any new data that may help to clarify our concepts. It is my privilege, for which indeed I express the deepest appreciation to this Institute, to offer for consideration a few thoughts on the toughness and fracture of hardened steels. Before proceeding to the data, I wish to express my great indebtedness to many associates whose stimulating discussions, generous contributions of data and cooperation in experiments are gratefully acknowledged. (But I wish to absolve them of any blame that may arise from the way in which their discussions and data have been used!) First, Dr. Edgar C. Bain, Vice President, Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation, whose amiable but merciless criticisms and always constructive and thoughtful suggestions help unfailingly to guard against pitfalls. It was found that, when ferrite was precipitated in the (prior austenite) grain boundaries of hardened steel, the notch-bar toughness was much less than in pieces fully hardened. The brief comments made in this chapter deal mainly with shaft sinking, but don't assume that freezing techniques apply only to shaft sinking. They can be used on tunnel work, on such things as liquid gas storage in sediment, and I think you will probably see other applications for it as we go along. The method was first developed in 1883 and was used to sink shallow shafts through water-bearing overburden in Germany and in England. One of the early shafts was in Germany and was sunk by freezing to 310-ft depth. The project required 17 months for drilling, roughly 5 1/2 months for freezing, and another 7 months for sinking, giving an average progress of 10 ½ fpm. Fortunately there have been numerous improvements and new developments in this technique through the years. With equipment and techniques available today, we can take a 20-ft-diam shaft down through 2000 ft of water-saturated overburden and the time schedule runs roughly 4 months for site preparation, freeze-hole drilling, installing the casings, and setting up the plant; 4 ½ months for freezing; and 6 months for excavating and installing permanent linings. This gives a progress rate of about 140 fpm, on average. I might qualify that a little in that the special linings that are required for some formations can affect the time. If it's straightforward sinking where one can use a heavy concrete lining, up to 630-640 fpm may be achieved in a shaft; but with special cast-iron tubbing or types like that, 5 fpd is pretty good progress, so the lining does affect the time. The freezing method is used mainly for sinking shafts through unstable water-bearing formations which cannot be grouted either effectively or economically and which are too deep to enclose in pile casing. Even with overburden, grouting methods available today can handle roughly 100 lb water pressure; in the range of, say, 100 to 150 ft from the surface, it's very often best to grout 40 or 50 ft. THE gas-liquid metal diffusion cell technique1-3 has been used to study the diffusion of nitrogen in Fe-C alloys. The actual apparatus and technique were the same as employed by the authors to study the diffusion of hydrogen in liquid iron.' The diffusion cell' was formed by immersing an alumina tube in a stagnant melt contained in an alumina crucible. The tube (hereafter called absorption tube) contained nitrogen gas at 1 atm and was connected to a sensitive gas-measuring system. The change in the average concentration of nitrogen in the melt in the absorption tube was determined by measuring the rate of absorption of nitrogen in the diffusion cell. Eq. [I], 1-3 derived from the appropriate solution of Fick's second law, was used to examine the data and to calculate chemical diffusion coefficients (D) in situations where the absorption appeared to be controlled by diffusion in the liquid: where V is the stp volume in cu cm, d is the diffusion cell diameter in cm, p, is the density of the melt in g per cu cm, pg is the stp density of nitrogen in g per cu cm, C, is expressed in wt pct, D is in sq cm per sec, and t is in min. According to Eq. [I], a plot of v vs vt should yield a straight line passing through the origin if absorption is controlled by diffusion in the liquid. The slope of this line could be used to determine the value of D under appropriate conditions. As discussed in earlier reports,1,2 the initial thermal expansion of the gas upon immersing the absorption tube distorts the line in the initial stages of a diffusion experiment. However, this is not a serious problem since the slope of V vs 6 plots can be determined from the data points obtained after the initial expansion ceases. The volumes reported on the data plot presented here represent absorption after this thermal expansion ceased. Several preliminary diffusion experiments were attempted with melts of pure iron and with Fe-C alloys containing up to 0.6 pct C. In these cases, no or very little absorption was observed. The only data obtained were for an Fe-C melt which was in addition thoroughly deoxidized by successive hydrogen and vacuum-degassing treatments. These treatments introduced an appreciable amount of aluminum into the melt and reduced its omgen content. The original charge material for this melt contained 0.23 pct s and approximately 0.001 pct &. After repeated hydrogen and vacuum-degassing treatments two diffusion experiments were performed. IN the pumping of sands, slurries and slimes, practices developed over the years are the real keystones of successful operation. These practices are necessarily based on modifications of familiar theories. Practical methods used in the solution of problems involving the pumping of materials are set forth in the following discussion. BASIC REQUIREMENTS To pump sands and slurries economically, a few basic requirements must be met by the pumping system as a whole. A pipe-line velocity must be established that will move the fluid mixture throughout the entire system without any possibility of the solids settling out. To accomplish this, the velocity of flow must be slightly in excess of the critical velocity of the mixture. The critical velocity of a mixture varies from 3 ft. per sec. to 18 ft. per sec., depending on the screen analysis, concentration, and specific gravity of the solids in the mixture. Most tailings are pumped at a minimum velocity of 4 ft. per sec. if they include slimes, whereas the pipe lines of sand and gravel dredges require velocities as high as 18 ft. per second. A number of articles have been written on the determination of the minimum velocities required to maintain solids in suspension. Studies have also been made on the friction and pumping heads developed when handling solids in suspension.1-4 Our experience so far has shown that, within the normal operating limits of a pumping system, the friction factor follows more nearly the basis described by Howard,1 who says, among his conclusions: " ... values of ƒ (friction factor) .. . will decrease with an increase in velocity." This conclusion is borne out by our actual experience. When the velocity in a pipe line is not sufficient to keep the solids in suspension, the total friction head is greater than when the velocity is increased to a point where the solids are in suspension. A slight increase in the volume of feed to the pump and a slight increase in the pump speed are usually all that is necessary to put the system in balance. MAINTAINING CONSTANT VOLUME Within reasonable limits, the volume of mixture to be handled through a pipe line should be held constant, so that the required velocity will be provided at all times. There are several ways in which this can be accomplished. The commonest is to provide a sump of sufficient capacity to take care of slight surges in the volume of mixture being fed to the pumping system. This sump, however, should not be as large as a settling chamber. The use of a float-controlled, fresh-water make-up valve in a sump will guarantee a constant volume. The nature if this process and the general course of its development have already been described by me in two papers read before the Institute.* Since the latter paper mas read, in February, 1898, the development at Kladno has been almost altogether in the direction of using metal direct from the blast-furnace. This has now been the regular practice for about a year. The molten metal is brought from the furnace in ladles, without the intervention of any mixing- or accumulating-reservoir. The work of an engineer is to direct natural forces so that the: bring about the results that he wishes to secure. Heretofore he ha concerned himself chiefly with physical forces and inanimate objects until he has secured a truly marvelous degree of control over them The great problem of the present age is to secure a like degree of know1 edge and control of the human factor. Progress has already been made along this line, but it is only a beginning. Wilhelm Ostwald says tha scientific knowledge enables a man to be a true prophet; but it must be remembered that a good many people do not seem to be able to main tain a high average in prophecy. In short, 'the average of knowledge is not equal to the average needs of the present time, but continually fails to keep pace with it. It has been aptly said that the really essentia need of the period is for more brains; if we only had sufficient knowledg and sagacity we could not only solve all difficulties, but prevent then from arising. This generalization holds good for an industrial organization. Th most vital need of the management is for more brains. The logica course for an engineer in charge of an industrial organization is, therefore to direct whatever forces may be at his command toward the development training, and guiding of all the brains in his organization. This is easie said than done, for it involves the carrying on toward two objective: the maximum of productive work, and the development of the individual who perform it. This is essentially like the rebuilding and enlarging of plant, keeping it in full operation the while. On the other hand, if th aim is merely for maximum production from an organization, withou offering opportunity for development, the final outcome will necessari be like that of a plant that is driven at full capacity without stoppin for repairs or improvements; it eventually becomes so run down th either a complete rebuilding is necessary or else it has to be abandone

Between 250 and 500 psi there is a tyansilion range and, for the polycrystalline specimens al least, u high-stress regime for 500 to 1500 psi where n is 5 or 6. These results are such that none of the suggested stress taws can he used to extrapolate to very loir stresses. Meclianisms for deformation in Ike grains and toy grain boundary sliding in the low-strcss regime are outlined. In particular, the mechanism for grain boundary sliding involves sliding controlled by diffusion from tensile to compressire Ledges. predictions based on this model give promising numerical agree-nicul with experiment. II is suggested that the mechanism for grain boundary sliding may he important in other circumstances, e.g., in creep of ceramic materials or superplaslicity, because it can operate with lille or no dislocation aclirity. WhEN the stress dependence of secondary creep rate is represented by a power law the values taken by the stress exponent n are found to vary between 1 and 7, see, c.g., Garofalo.' In Eq. 1 11 u is the applied stress and A a constant. The case for accepting values of v = 1 rests principally upon tests at high temperatures (>0.9Tm) and there have only been isolated tests at lower temperatures (rather than plots of creep rate against stress) for which the creep rates are such that some form of Nabarro-Herring creep with n = 1 is applicable. Hanson5 and Greenwood and cole6 plotted creep rate against stress for tests made in the vicinity of 0.5Tw, and found a "creep yield", so that below a certain low stress the creep rate was linearly related to stress: these observations appear to have been subsequently ignored. Various models have been proposed which agree with a large body of experimental results in which n equals -5 at high stresses (e.g., weertman7 and McLean8). Various alternatives to Eq. [1] have been proposed principally as a means of unifying creep data, but sometimes, it seems, in order to obviate the necessity for assuming a series of regimes of deformation associated with the various values of n; further refer- ence to these will be made in the section on stress laws. This paper calls attention to extensive results which show n = 1 for the creep of lead at room temperature (0.5 T,). RESULTS Fig. 1 is a composite diagram based on figures in the literature6,9,10 with additional results obtained by the present authors and their colleagues11,12 in the course of a number of investigations not directly concerned with stress sensitivity. Lead I is of commercial purity (99.99 pct Pb) and lead IT a specially refined material, hydrogen-purified to remove oxygen; it contains 99.999 pct Pb. Curve A is for lead I in polycrystalline form (grain diameter 0.02 to 0.05 cm) at room temperature (22' to 26°C). Curve B1 is for lead I, polycrystalline, tested at 50C. Curve B2 is for lead 11, polycrystalline (grain diameter 0.02 cm), tested at room temperature (22 O- Curves C to F relate to tests made of bicrystals of lead 11: all of the same nominal orientation ("Y" in Ref. 12). Curves C and V are for creep within the component crystals of the bi crystals at 22°C (AB and CD in Fig. 2). Curve E is for creep measured in a gage straddling the boundary, approximately 0.15 mm either side (BC in Fig. 2). Curve F shows rates of grain boundary sliding (as distinct from strain rates in the other curves), obtained by averaging the offsets of six marker lines on the bi-crystal boundaries. The principal feature of the results is that the stress sensitivity falls into two distinct regimes, according to whether the stress is below approximately 250 or above 500 psi (there is a transitional range between 250 and 500 psi). The new result is that below -250 psi two of the curves (A and BI) give a value of n 1, and the other curves also drop below n - 2 to -1.5 but do not extend to low enough stresses to show clear evidence of n 1. At very high stresses the curves tend to give values of n - 6, as previously determined in other investigations. Curve R2 for the high-purity lead in polycrystalline form at room tenlperature almost merges with B, and thus gives new significance to the values for stresses of 150 and 200 psi; previously'3 these points had seemed to fall away from the curve of slope -3, but they now can be seen as almost completing a transition to n = 1. It should be noted that there was originally considerable apparent scatter in the results for the high-purity lead. However, this was found to be associated with annealing conditions or variations in residual content of oxygen and curve B2 was constructed using the highest rate (i .e., the rate for the purest lead) determined for each stress during the course of various investigations over the years: altogether, some forty tests were used in constructing curve R2.

The pllnse diagvam for the NaF-AlF3 system was used to calcutate an ionic model for the NaF-AlF3 system. Assuming an ideal solution,a series of simultaneous equations expressing equilibria be-tween solid and liquid phases at the euleclic, perilec-tic, and melting points were solved for the activities of the ionic species, the dissociation constants, and the entropies and heats of fusion. The calculations suggest the existence of A13F1415 ions in addition to the F-1+AlF6-3 , and AlF4-4 ions previously proposed by others. The calculaled valnes give better agreement with vapor pressures than the previous model without Al3Fl14-5. Additional possible vefinements of the model are proposed. CRYOSCOPIC1 investigations and density data2 for the NaF-A1F3 system have previously been used to study the dissociation mechanism of Na3A1F6 and to derive equilibrium constants for its dissociation to NaF and NaAlF,. Depending primarily on the heat of fusion assumed for cryolite, the dissociation constants ranged between 0.02 and 0.18 from cryoscopic studies, and from 0.09 at 1273°K to 0.16 at 1363°K from density data. In most cases the values were unable to reproduce satisfactorily the experimental liquidus lines very far on the A1F3 side of the Na3A1Fe composition. This suggested the existence of at least one other ionized compound in the melt besides NaA1F4 in the Na3A1F6-A1F3 side of the system. This is assumed to be liquid Na&13F14 (chiolite), which is already established as a stable solid in phase studies of this system. MODEL FOR THE MELT The melt is assumed to be an ideal solution with ion activities equal to anion fractions. The only cation in the model is sodium so that Temkin and simple anionic activities are identical. Although the compounds are completely ionized to Na' and the respective anion in the melt, molecular rather than ionic notation is used throughout this work. The Na3A1Fe is assumed to dissociate to NaA1F4 and NaF as in the former model, and Na&13F14 to dissociate to Na3A1Fe and NaA1F4. Other valid dissociation equilibria can be written involving these four compounds, but all of these can be obtained by combinations of the two described dissociation reactions and, thus, are automatically considered in these calculations. The model allows for no free AlF3 so that compositions for NAIF3 > 0.5 (mole fraction A1F3 on the NaF-A1F3 basis) cannot be treated. The question of the existence of free AlF3 in the melt will be discussed again later. The constants in the model were evaluated from points along the entire known liquidus line of the NaF-A1F3 system. Previous work employed only the liquidus line or densi- ties near the Na3A1F, composition. The liquidus line compositions used in the solution of the model are from unpublished work by Mr. P. A. Foster, Jr., for compositions between the Na3A1F6 melting point and the Na&13F14-A1F3 eutectic, and from the published works of Grjotheim,1 Phillips,3 and Foster4 for the remainder of the system. The relationships used in solving for the desired dissociation constants and heats and entropies of fusion are listed in Table I, and the points along the liquidus line at which each apply are indicated to the right of the relationships. The mole fractions of each of the separate species in the melt are symbolized by N. Relationships [I] and [2] are the respective dissocia-ation constants, Kl and K2, of Na3AIF6 and Na5A13F14 for this model. For simplicity, these constants will be assumed to be independent of temperature. Relationship [3] follows from the assumption of the ideal solution. The expression relating the values of N to the experimental values of NAIf3, is given in Relationship (41. Relationships [5], [6], and [7] each state the equilibrium between a compound in the melt and its pure solid phase for the portion of the liquidus lines where it precipitates. The heats of melting, AH,, and entropies of melting, AS,, used in [5], [6], and [7] are assumed to be independent of temperature. The compositions and temperatures of all five invariant points (two melting points, two eutectics, and one peritectic) along the liquidus lines from NAIF3 = 0 to NAIF3 = 0.5 were employed in the solution. The eutectic and peritectic compositions were particularly useful because each of these is involved in one more equation than other points along the liquidus lines and thus reduces the number of points required to solve for the constants. Also, their use assures that the inflection points in the derived liquidus line will correspond exactly with those on the experimental liquidus line. The total number of equations is 5k1 — 1, where n is the number of experimental composition points used. The number of unknowns is 4n + 5 (4n- 3 values of N, 3 values each of AH, and AS,, and 2 values of K). Thus, six points must be used in the solution to obtain an equal number of equations and unknowns. The one additional required experimental composition was taken on the liquidus line between the Na3A1Fe melting point and the Na3A1F6-Na5A13F14 peritectic. Previous work indicated this was a difficult portion of the curve to fit. The temperature used for the point was 1161°K, the same as for the NaF-Na3A1Fe eutectic. This choice of temperature gave two points with identical NNa3AIF6 values which simplifies the algebraic solution. The second point at this temperature is denoted 1161°'K. PROCEDURE FOR SOLUTION OF EQUATIONS Values were assumed for NNa,AIF and NNaF at the NaF-Na3A1F6 eutectic at 1161°k. By an iterative procedure, the corresponding values for NNa5A13F14 and NNaAlF4 at 1161°K were determined from 131 and 141. A value was assumed for NNaAlF4 at 1161°'K and

This paper describes the unusual hazardous conditions encountered in mining thick, inclined coal beds under heavy cover in Carbon County, Utah. This description includes heavy roof conditions, sloughing ribs, steep pitches, and severe bouncing experience. Emphasis is placed on the top bench system of mining and development in the top half of a 16-ft seam, under the roof rock, which is bolted, and the recovery of the bottom coal on retreat; success of bolted roof and ribs; and shuttle car haulage on pitches up to 25%. The use of protective cages for operators of face equipment, the guarding of belt conveyor systems to prevent injury associated with deliberate entry, and the positive lockout of electrical equipment is described and illustrated. Most coal mining areas of the Western United States are characterized either by thick beds, steep pitches or heavy cover. Individually, each of these may present inherent safety hazards that in- fluence mining. When all are met at one location, the combined effect is to make the safe operation of the mining property a challenge to management. These combined conditions are met in the coal mines of the Columbia-Geneva Steel Div. of the United States Steel Corp., in southeastern Utah. This coal bed measures up to 16 ft in thickness, the pitch is as much as 25% and mining is under a cover approaching 3000 ft. The Sunnyside coal bed is found in the Book Cliff Mountains, a great escarpment extending from west of Castle Gate, Utah, some 180 miles to Grand Junction, Colo. West of Green River, Utah, the Book Cliffs swing sharply to the north because of the domelike uplift of the San Rafael Swell to the southwest. It is in this northerly extension of the Book Cliffs that the Sunnyside coal in the Blackhawk Formation of the Mesa Verde Group, Upper Cretaceous Age is found. The strata are transected by numerous faults with from a few inches to as much as a hundred feet of displacement. All of these faults have had some effect on the mining operation, either in roof control or, in the case of major faulting, the pattern of mine development.
