Used as a classifier in a plant expanding capacity or changing to closed-circuit operation, the liquid-solid cyclone offers the advantage of being adaptable to existing conditions. This paper presents the costs involved and experience gained from operating a unit of this kind. BY now application of the liquid-solid cyclone to various classification problems in the chemical and metallurgical fields is more or less familiar. A less publicized application receiving wider consideration as time goes on is its use as a classifier in closed-circuit grinding operations. This paper presents the costs involved and the experience gained from operating a unit of this kind. In May 1951 the Tennessee Copper Co. installed in its London mill at Copperhill, Tenn., a liquid-solid cyclone in closed circuit with a 6x12-ft ball mill. The circuit in which this cyclone is used is the regrind or secondary grinding circuit of a copper flotation plant. Originally it consisted of a 7x1-ft conical ball mill in closed circuit with a bowl classifier. Changes made in the primary grinding circuit of the mill necessitated a regrind circuit of greater capacity. The bulk concentrate to be ground was raised from 900 or 1000 tpd to 1200 or 1300 tpd, and to accommodate this increase a 6x12-ft ball mill which had been in the primary grinding circuit was moved into the regrind circuit. When this was done it was found that the classifier was too small to give efficient operation. Space in the plant was at a premium, and since use of the cyclone offered considerable economy the installation shown in Figs. 1-3 was made. The unit installed is a 24-in. diam cyclone classifier with a 20" cone angle. Diameter of the vortex finder is 8 in., the feed entrance area 20 sq. in. Maximum diameter of the adjustable apex valve is 6 in. and minimum diameter approximately 3.5 in. To refer again to Figs. 1 and 2, the cyclone* is mounted motor. It is charged with 18 tons of 1-in. balls. The overflow, or fines, passes by gravity directly to the copper flotation plant. The ball mill discharge and the new feed combine in a sump from which they are sent to the cone by an 8x6 SRL pump at a rate of 497 gpm. Pressure at the cyclone is 5 psi. For reasons dictated by the nature of the ore treated, particularly the bonding of fine grains of chalcopyrite to pyrrhotite, the froth from the second cell of the copper rougher circuit is returned to the regrind mill. This flow, which somewhat complicates the standard closed-circuit calculation, is seen in Fig. 1 to be 156 tpd of solids. This combines with the cyclone classifier underflow to constitute the ball mill feed. The requirement of the regrind product is that it be 77 to 80 pct —200 mesh. The liquid-solids cyclone operating in conjunction with the 6x12-ft mill adequately met this requirement. Of primary importance is the fact that this arrangement provided sufficient classification capacity to replace the undersized classifier and was capable of building up a circulating load to 87 pct, large enough to give an efficient grind. In this instance the circulating load is taken as the ratio of sands to new feed. Any comparison of performance between this liquid-solid cyclone and the replaced classifier would of course be unfair, since the bowl classifier was

Adsorption of a nonionic polyacrylamide (PAM), an anionic polyacrylamide with sulfonate functional groups (PAMS), and a cationic polyacrylamide with amine functional groups (PAMD), on hematite was investigated as a function of different solution conditions. Adsorption results indicate that the major mechanisms of adsorption of polyacrylamides on hematite is through hydrogen bonding, with electrostatic forces playing a secondary role. All the polymers exhibited irreversibility of adsorption upon dilution. Also, entropic effects were determined to be important in adsorption. Surface chemical properties of hematite and solution chemistry of the polyacrylamides are considered to explain the polymer adsorption behavior on hematite.

INTRODUCTION THE situation in the United States, at the present time, regarding the supply of manganese ores and alloys of manganese is one of great seriousness and is likely to become increasingly so while the European war continues. The two principal iron-manganese alloys, ferromanganese and spiegeleisen, are indispensable in steel manufacture, being used extensively in the Bessemer and openhearth processes.. Spiegeleisen, the lower alloy, contains between 15 and 25 per cent., and ferromanganese, the higher alloy, between 60 and 80 per cent., of manganese. Besides manganese the alloys contain iron and carbon. On the market ferromanganese is usually quoted on the basis of 80 per cent. manganese, and spiegeleisen on the basis of 20 per cent. manganese. The consumption of ferromanganese has been increasing during recent years at the expense of spiegeleisen, because larger quantities of the latter must be used to ac-complish the same purpose with the result that the amount of carbon introduced with it into the molten metal is frequently injuriously great. Manganese ore proper, in the form of manganese dioxide, is used extensively in many chemical industries, especially for oxidizing purposes. It is also used for the manufacture of both wet and dry electric cells and in the manufacture of paints and dyes. The manganese ore used in this country has been derived hitherto from three principal sources:. Southern Russia, Southern British India and East Central Brazil. The following tables show the quantity of manganese ore imported from these countries, and (for comparison) the domestic production, during 1912, 1913 and 1914. The imported manganese ore has been used largely in the manufacture of iron-manganese alloys and in addition large quantities of the alloys themselves have been imported, chiefly. from Great Britain, Germany and other European countries.

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from Sept. 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so, that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining, reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will, use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

This article discusses methods of improving airborne capture by conventional dust suppression systems. The work was performed in a full-scale plywood model of a mine entry with a wooden mockup of a Joy 12 CM continuous miner. Dust was introduced at the front of the entry, and water sprays knocked down part of the dust cloud. Sampling in the return air determined the percentage dust reduction. Based on the results, guidelines are offered for continuous miner spray systems to control dust. Empirical relations have been developed to determine the effect of changes in water spray pressure on air movement, dust knockdown, and pollutant concentrations in the face return. Nozzle selection and arrangement are discussed for high dust knockdown efficiencies.

AT the joint session of Blast Furnace and Open Hearth Committees, April 7, 1937, at Birmingham, the subject of the quality of basic open-hearth pig iron was so well presented and discussed from so many different viewpoints that it was the general opinion that progress had been made and that such meetings were conducive to the advancement of the art of making pig iron of the right quality for the open-hearth man to produce the most satisfactory quality of steel. It was agreed that there is a decided differentiation between the chemical analysis of pig iron and the "quality" of pig iron. Paul J. McKim said that open-hearth furnace operators frequently make refer-ence to certain types of iron as "bad iron," "dirty iron," "cold metal,' etc., claiming that when using these irons, although they are within specified chemical analysis, it is impossible to produce quality steel. Mr. McKim gave a list of the suggested causes of those "certain types" of bad irons that have a thoroughly respectable analysis but a thoroughly disreputable character. Another open-hearth man, P. A. Maclsaac, of Nova Scotia, said that: The effects of iron flint is below standard in analysis or in that mysterious property called quality, are well known to all open-hearth operators. It has been shown that iron of this type results in the production of steels on which the rejections of finished product, run high. What is to be done about it? I would say that the burden of producing high-quality iron should be placed squarely on the shoulders of the blast-furnace man, even as that of making good steel is shouldered by the open-hearth luau. It is the purpose of this paper to bring out into the open this 'mysteri-ous property called quality"; that is, in those "certain types" of basic pig iron that make it impossible to produce quality steels; and at the same time to point the way for the blast-furnace man to be able to shoulder the burden that Mr. MacIsaac and all other open-hearth men and foundry-men have placed upon him.

Equations are developed which describe the growth of graphite nodules during a-phase graphi-tization under various limiting conditions. When carbon diffusion is rate controlling a modified Birchenall-Mead equation predicts an "apparent activation energy" of 31 keal mole-1 for the parabolic growth constant. If reaction at the graphite or cementite interface is the slowest process growth kinetics are linear and the activation energy must be >50 keal mole-1. A comparison with the experimental observations confirms that carbon diffusion determines the rate of reaction. Apart from minor approximations associated with Lou! carbon solubility in a iron the theory may also be applied to I-phase graphitization. It is well-known that cementite exists as a meta-stable phase in Fe-C alloys and that if a specimen is held at diffusion temperatures for a sufficiently long period the cementite decomposes and graphite is precipitated. Graphitization occurs by the nu-cleation and growth of carbon nodules and several impurity elements catalyze the reaction when present in minute amounts.1 The growth kinetics of nodules have been extensively investigated in the fee ? range2, 3 and recently in the bee a range.1, 4 Experimental growth curves (nodule radius vs time) have slopes which decrease with time, but the scatter of points is generally too great for the precise shape of the curves to be determined with certainty. Birchenall and Mead5 concluded that they are parabolic in ? iron, indicating diffusion control, and that the migration of carbon atoms determines the growth rate. Harris et al, 1 advanced similar ideas for a-phase graphitization. On the other hand, Burke3 chose to regard the initial growth region as a transient followed by a linear law indicating interface control (i.e., cementite decomposition or graphite crystallization as the slowest process). Jeminson and Higgins6 originally considered the initial steep portions of "parabolie" to represent a linear growth law also. In support of these ideas it has been noted that the apparent ac-

The problem of surface support in coal mining is naturally divided into three branches: 1. Surface covered with improvements of such value as compared with the value of the underlying coal, or with such elements of danger to mining, that absolute support is essential. 2. Surface with improvements of less value than the underlying coal such that moderate settlement may be permitted, but destructive settlement must be avoided, either by reason of danger to human life or unwarranted property damage. 3. Surface of relatively small value as compared with the underlying coal where destructive settlement may be permitted. First Problem In the first case it is evident that the original support must be maintained either (a) by leaving ample pillars and confining the coal recovery to a very conservative first mining, (b) by so supporting less conservative first mining by filling or flushing that the gradual deterioration of the pillars may be prevented and subsidence avoided, or (c) by incompressible support as masonry either as an adjunct to insufficient pillars or in place of the original coal support. a. THIS country was faced with the possible necessity of utilizing nonbauxitic ores for producing aluminum during World War 11. Construction of four experimental plants to treat such ores by four different processes was authorized1-4 including one at Salt Lake City, for the conversion of Marysvale alunite to metal-grade alumina and potassium sulphate by the Kalunite process.' An aluminum reduction plant in Tacoma, Wash., with a capacity of 50 tons of aluminum per day, was constructed to handle the Kalunite alumina produced at the Salt Lake City plant. The alumina and aluminum plants were Defense Plant Corp. projects operated by Kalunite, Inc. and Olin Industries, Inc., respectively. Kalunite alumina differs from Bayer alumina in several respects, particularly in that the former contains potash instead of soda. The presence of potassium in the alumina feed to the cryolite bath was stated by aluminum technologists to be undesirable under the usual operating conditions of aluminum furnaces. In 1940, about 20 tons of Kalunite alumina produced in the Kalunite pilot plant, were reduced electrolytically in a 10,000 amp furnace at Battelle Memorial Institute and at the aluminum reduction plant at Neuhausen, Switzerland. These relatively small scale tests indicated that satisfactory commercial aluminum could be produced in a practical manner. The Tacoma plant reduced about 2,500,000 lb of Kalunite alumina to produce more than 1,200,000 lb of aluminum, in accordance with the accepted gractice for reducing Bayer alumina. It was desired to determine whether commercial aluminum could be produced on a large scale and to establish the technological differences in commercial reduction practice between Kalunite and Bayer alumina. In the course of collecting data, the effects of the abnormal chemical composition and physical properties of Kalunite alumina were observed wherever possible. Tacoma Reduction Plant The reduction plant had two pot lines, each with 120 cells in series, operated at approximately 32,000 amp. Each cell was provided with a single rectangular Soederberg continuous anode, with side-pin electrical contacts. Each cell was hooded and ventilated through a stack connected to 14 other cells, with 25,000 cfm blower. When the plant started operation in 1942, all of the cathode linings were of block construction. Rebuilt cells were of rammed paste construction.

The alloying of various elements with gold to produce different colors is an old art, but the effect of each element or combination of elements is not generally known. Investigations have been made in this field by F. E. Carter,' E. M. Wise,2 and L. Sterner-Rainer.3 It is the intent of this paper to present in schematic diagrams the effects of various elements upon the color and the melting point of gold alloys. In this investigation 2-oz. melts made in a high-frequency inductiorl furnace were used for all tests. The melting points were determined by the use of a calibrated chromel-alumel thermocouple sealed in a thin-walled alundum tube. The couple was then submerged in the molten metal and the freezing and melting points were determined by using a Leeds and Northrup potentiometer. By checking several melts using copper, zinc and gold, it was found that the accuracy of determining the melting point was within ± 5" F. To determine the differences in colors and to classify them, a wet tissue paper was placed over the polished samples and examined under a uniform white light. The 2 by 45 by 0.045-in. samples were cut from 50 per cent cold-worked strip. The original ingot was 3 by % by % in. This visual comparison, although not scientifically exact, served as a quite satisfactory means for determining and classifying these differences. The base alloys, or "hardeners," were first made up and analyzed, after which the gold and silver were added. This method of making up the alloys was chosen so that the same base alloy could be used for the gold alloys of different karats. The first series consisted of gold, copper, zinc and nickel, the copper comprising from 85 to 65 per cent of the content of the "hardener" and the zinc and nickel replacing copper. The second scries consisted of gold, silver, copper, zinc and nickel, the copper comprising from 85 to 65 per cent of the content of the hardener with the silver, nickel and zinc replacing copper. There was no particular reason for choosing these combinations, except that they gave a color range from red-pink to white.

IN order not to deviate from the proposed order both in speaking of melts and of things necessary for guns, I shall tell you at present the method by which iron balls are made. This is surely a very fine invention and a horrible one because of its very powerful effect. It is a new thing in warfare,* because (as far as I know) iron balls shot from guns were never seen in, Italy before those that King Charles of France brought here for the conquest of the Kingdom of Naples against King Ferrandino in the year 1495. Now, although I spoke to you briefly of these when I told you above of the purification of iron, it seems to me necessary to show you again in more detail here how they are made. Therefore I tell you that in addition to iron, bellows, blast furnace, and charcoal, it is necessary to have the moulds, without which they could not be cast. At first, when this work was begun in Italy, it was customary to make these moulds of bronze so as not to be obliged always to be making them of clay. Now the present masters cast the moulds of the same iron in order to save expense. Although I am aware that you should already know how to make these from the methods of moulding taught you before, still I shall tell you the method that is followed in making these, because in the practice of every particular thing there is some divergence from the general procedure. For these balls, first make a ball of wood or of clay, or have one made of lead or iron, round and of exactly the dimensions that you wish. This is if you wish to make only one in your mould; otherwise take as many as you wish it to contain. Bury half of this, or these, in a board or in clay and, having greased them with oil or lard, make a mould over them of plaster of Paris, or of clay if you have no plaster, exactly as you wish it to be in iron or bronze. Then make the other half opposite this. After having taken out the balls make little openings for the gates and vents and like- wise four holes for pegging the parts together. ONE of the most important applications of the zone-melting process of Pfann1 concerns the refining of materials with respect to impurities whose distribution coefficient k differs from unity. The repeated passage of molten zones along an ingot concentrates the impurities for which k < 1, for example, towards the end to which the zones move. It is desirable to know the ultimate distribution of impurity after the passage of an infinite number of zones of constant length; this is also the distribution which is unchanged by the passage of a further molten zone.

Albert Sauveur writes, on Apr. 16, 1918, while the German offensive was at its height, as follows: "In spite of the German guns and air raids we are all in good health and spirits and shall leave Paris only as a last extremity. Our unlimited confidence in Foch, however, makes us believe that it will not be necessary. I trust that everything is well with you at the Institute." Harold Whittingham entered the active service with the heavy artillery in England at the beginning of the war and has been fighting in France since February, 1915. He now holds the rank of Major. On Dec. 17, 1917, after being wounded, he was taken prisoner by the Germans, and, so far as is known, is still in a prison camp in Germany. Charles W. Wright, who is a Captain in charge of the work of the American Red Cross in Sardinia, Italy, writes that the service there is giving aid to about 80,000 soldiers&apos; families and is upholding the good repute of America in that place. W. S. Holloway in 1914 joined the Sportsmans&apos; Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers as a private, but is now a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers, Mining Corps. A FEW copper-zinc-base alloys meet die-casting requirements reason- ably well, although improvements are desired. Aluminum bronzes, high-tinbronzes and some copper-nickel-zinc alloys can be die-cast, accordingto Herb,1 but seldom are because of such factors as higher melting ranges and greater cost than certain of the brasses. Fox2 has summarized the copper-base die-casting alloys that were in commercial use in 1937 and has given the effects of different alloying constituents. Table 1 gives some of the properties of these alloys as reported by Fox. TABLE 1. THE rapid increase in reliability, the low cost f operation, the ready application of safety devices, and the growing availability of central-station power have made the question of installing a hoist of the electric type no longer debatable. Where adequate electric power is available, there are few cases where it would be advisable to install a steam or air hoist. The type of electrical equipment depends largely on the nature of the power supply, its capacity, and the form of the power contract under which power is purchased. In a large majority of cases, the available electric power is alternating current, three phase, 60 cycles. There is, however, considerable 25-cycle power in use; and in a few instances constant voltage direct current is the only power available for a small or an occasional medium-size hoist. Where a new hoist is to be installed, the designer of the mechanical parts can readily take care of the maximum stresses likely to be imposed by the&apos; motor. Where the hoist is already installed and operated by steam or air and it is desired to substitute an electric motor for the engine, a careful check should be made to determine the advisability of using the old mechanical parts. In most cases it is better to install a complete new hoist than to attempt to use old mechanical parts. A steam engine has a definite maximum torque, which the hoist has been designed to withstand, while a motor may be able to deliver momentary torques beyond the strength of the mechanical parts of the hoist. The selection of the proper type of electrical equipment can only be made after complete information is obtained and certain calculations made to determine the capacities required. There are several methods used in making hoist calculations, but no matter what method is utilized a fair degree of familiarity with hoists and hoisting conditions is necessary before an intelligent analysis and proper selection can be made.

Oxide and silicates respond to flotation with a large number of anionic collectors. These include carboxylates (fatty acids), sulfonates, alkyl sulfates, and certain chelating agents. In contrast to sulfide mineral flotation, relatively long-chained collectors (generally longer than 10 carbons) are required to effect flotation of this group of minerals. The structural formulas of these various anionic collectors are presented in Table 1. Formulas and solubilities of various fatty acids are presented in Table 2. These solubilities are those of the dissolved and undissociated species of the acid, e.g. oleic acid, HOl(aq). Of the compounds listed, oleic acid and abietic acid, which IS a major constituent of talloel, are used most commonly in commercial applications. The usage of these two collectors is related to cost and effectiveness. In addition to their high molecular weights, oleic acid contains a double bond in its hydrocarbon chain, while abietic acid is comprised of aromatic rings containing double bonds. The presence of double bonds increases solubility significantly over that of saturated homologues. Stability of metal-collectors assumes a most significant role in these systems, and the solubility products of various metal carboxylates and sulfonates are listed in Tables 3, 4 and 5. In addition to these properties, strength of the acids of these various anionic collectors is also important. The carboxylic and hydroxamic acids are weak acids whereas sulfonic and alkyl sulfuric acids are strong acids. All of the carboxylic acids fall in the range of pK = 4.7 ± 0.5 ([2]); the pK of hydroxamic acid is around 9 ([3]); and the pK of sulfonic acid is about 1.5 ([4]).

STAINLESS iron, as mild stainless steel is usually called, an alloy ranging from 11.50 to 15.00 per cent chromium with carbon under 0.12 per cent, has been considered to be not appreciably affected in respect to corrosion resistance by heat treatment. This metal, while one of the most widely used of the "straight" chromium stainless alloys, has failed in many applications because of insufficient information regarding heat treatment. These failures have been attributed to many possible causes from an inherent lack of resistance to corrosion and misapplication to mysterious electrolytic effects or comparatively minute non-metallic inclusions. Many uses for a steel with such excellent physical properties is are latent in this alloy have been lost on account of corrosion failures which could have been avoided by applying proper heat treatment. The alloy has not received the recognition or attention it should because of the fact that&apos; the details of its metallurgical behavior were not thoroughly understood. Response to heat treatment of the steel is well known as regards tensile properties, 1,2 but its application has been for improvement in tensile characteristics or on account of machining considerations rather than for corrosion prevention. The potential user of this steel has not been clearly advised in papers, either technical or commercial, that have been written about it in the last 10 years or more, of particular features that are of prime importance in developing the excellent properties of this metal. The data to be presented in this paper are concerned mainly with the effect of heat treatment on the corrosion resistance, but a study has also been made of the concurrent microstructural changes and an explanation developed for the phenomena revealed, as well as a correlation to the other physical properties-hardness, tensile characteristics and impact strength.
