The ten years, 1879 to 1888, inclusive, have been notable in the history of iron-making for the great rise during the latter part of 1879 and the earlier half of 1880; for the maximum of production in 1882 ; for the gradual decline and the reduced product through 1883,1884 and nearly to the end of 1885; then, for the recovery through- 1886 and 1887; and the extraordinary outputs of our iron furnaces during the last three years. The price of pig-iron might be taken as an index to the condition of the iron-mining industry, and if represented graphically, they would shorn approximately parallel curves. The mining industry cannot always respond quickly to a rise in price and an increased demand for ore; nor can its production drop simultaneously with sudden falls in price of iron and of ore. Hence, the irregularities of the one are not reflected in the other. The statistics of the iron mines collected by the United States census, for the year ending June 30, 1880, exhibit admirably their condition at that time. The reports received from mine owners and managers, of the production for the year 1888, furnish the basis for a comparison and supply data for some notes on the changes in the iron-mining industry in New York which have taken place in this period of time. The iron-ores of New York may be grouped in the following districts: I. The Highlands of the Hudson (magnetites). II. The Lake Champlain and Adirondack Region (magnetites). III. St. Lawrence and Jefferson Counties (red hematites). IV. Clinton and Wayne Counties (fossil-ores of the Clinton Group). V. Dutchess and Colnmbia Counties (limonites). VI. The Hudson River (carbonates). VII. Staten Island (limonites). The ores of the first and second districts, as enumerated, are almost exclusively magnetites; those of the third and fourth are hematites;

In view of the good results which have followed the wide discussion of the rail-specifications of the American Section of the International Association for Testing Materials, I now offer for discussion its specifications for steel forgings and steel castings. It is not necessary to emphasize the importance of reaching definite conclusions on these subjects. Engineers, consumers and manufacturers are alike interested in securing good, reliable, uniform steel. In this connection, I would call particular attention to the important paper read by Mr. C. H. Ridsdale, last September, before the Iron and Steel Institute, as bearing on them; and, for convenience of reference in the discussion, I append the Table in Section VI. of his paper, on a Manifestations, Classified mider Heads of Faults of Different Types. appearing after Treatment by the User, for Tracing their Probable Source."* The discussion of these specifications will be practically a continuation of our former discussions on "The Physics of Steel." We have passed through a period in which the chemical composition of steel has received the greatest prominence; but failures of steel forgings and castings of the best chemical composition have shown that we could not control the quality of the finished product by the chemical composition alone. It must be admitted that differences in the physical properties of the steel, greater than those due to small variations in composition,are produced by heat-treatment, both in connection with the mechanical work of forging and otherwise. The present result is a strong tendency to deem the heat-treatment more important than the chemical composition. I think the mean course is the safer. The subject of this paper is particularly appropriate, since Daniel C. Jackling was active in early exploitation of taconites on the Mesabi Range and contributed greatly to their later economic development. After his success in developing the low grade porphyries in the West he looked for more worlds to conquer, and so undertook the concentration of low grade taconites, from which he hoped to produce commercial ore. Mesabi Iron Co., organized in 1919, actually did produce merchantable sinter from taconites in 1922. The enterprise did not prove commercial at the time, as cost of production was high and the surplus of iron ore in the Lake Superior District already contributed to a low market price, but this same property has since been developed by Reserve Mining Co. The work done by Jackling had much to do with the success of this later venture. Iron ore was first discovered on the Marquette Range in Michigan in 1845. The first ore from this range came from the old Jackson mine in Negaunee in 1848. During these early years this property and others on the Marquette produced limited tonnages for transportation to Lower Lakes and for consumption by charcoal furnaces in the area, where a plentiful supply of hardwoods furnished the charcoal for iron smelting. The Marquette and other ranges tributary to Lake Superior did not produce much ore for transportation to Lower Lakes until the locks at Sault Ste. Marie were constructed, but from the time the first lock at the "Soo" was completed in 1855 these ores were transported through the locks to consumer centers in the East. The Marquette Range has a history of continuous production from 1848 to the present day. In 1877 the Menominee Range was discovered at the location of the old Penn Mines near Vulcan, Mich. There were further discoveries of ore on the old Menominee Range and at Florence, Wis., in 1880 and at Iron River and Crystal Falls, Mich., in 1882. Penn Mines continued in operation from the date of their discovery until they were finally exhausted by Pickands-Mather in 1945, but operations still continue on the Menominee in the Crystal Falls and Iron River districts. Ore is shipped to a lake port at Escanaba, Mich.

Front Range, Colorado: The majority of the rocks comprising the Front Range of Colorado are pre-Cambrian schists, gneisses, and intrusives which have been elevated to form part of the Southern Rocky Mountain physiographic province. The region is noted mainly for its production of gold and silver, but ores of tungsten, fluorspar, uranium, copper, and iron have been worked. Geological literature1-' describes pitchblende and other radioactive minerals occurring at Jamestown, Boulder County; Central City, Gilpin County; and Lawson, Clear Creek County (fig. 1). Manuscript received March 30, 1949. counties cover most of the highly mineralized section of the Front Range which extends from Jamestown to Breckenridge. As far as the writer is aware, uranium has been found only in the portion northeast of Lawson. Silver Deposits at Caribou Hill: The historic silver deposits of Caribou Hill, located approximately half way between Jamestown and Central City, and 35 miles in a straight line northwest of Denver, appeared particularly intriguing as an area to prospect for uranium for the following reasons: here exists an isolated group of high-grade silver veins in the center of a mining district containing occurrences of uranium, and, in two of the well-known uranium deposits of the world, those at Great Bear Lake, Canada, and Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, uranium is associated with silver in similar fissure veins. An exploration program, conducted in the spring of 1945, directed special attention to Caribou Hill and was rewarded with the discovery of heavy, canary-yellow stained specimens of'pitchblende. The veins are confined to shear zones cutting a north-south, elongated quartz-monzonite stock of Tertiary (?) age lying in the axis of a major anticline of the Idaho Springs biotite schist, the oldest pre-Cambrian formation in the district. The stock is one and three-quarter miles long by more than a mile wide, and Caribou Hill is approximately at its center. The ore zones vary in width from a few inches to 15 ft, and one structure has been traced for a length of over 4000 ft. The ore minerals are galena, sphalerite, ruby silver, native silver, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and pitchblende. They occur most common-

A PROSPECTOR stood atop a Venezuelan mountain called El Florero just 25 years ago, and shouted to the world that he had found a large, rich new source of iron ore. But his words were lost in the big green South American jungles and besides, the world had more iron ore than it could handle. There were no crises in 1926, no major wars on the horizon, no worries about mineral supplies. In the U. S., the populace was "keeping cool with Coolidge," and the solid foundation of the economy-the steel industry-rested on a still firmer basis, the Lake Superior iron ores.

This paper describes the results of microscopic examination of a series of brass pipes removed from apartment and office buildings in New York City, adjacent localities on Long Island, and Philadelphia. They were selected as typical of approximately four hundred pipe specimens obtained over a period of five years during an investigation of corrosion in hot-water installations. A part of the investigation is reported in this paper and includes a brief history of the pipes, a description of their inside surface and microstructure, and a study of the effects of corrosion, with particular reference to the structural aspects of local and selective dezincification. Although the bibliography on the corrosion of brass pipes is quite extensive, it refers almost entirely to corrosion in sea water. The authors believe that their examination of this series of pipes, which had been subjected to the corrosive action of fresh water for various lengths of time, may throw some additional light on the problem of corrosion. Pipes Examined The pipes were made by different manufacturers and their sizes range from 3/4 in. to 4 in. nominal inside diameter, the majority being within I to 2 in. They can be divided into two groups according to chemical composition: (I) with a copper content of 60 to 62 per cent and (2) with a copper content of 65 to 68 per cent. The first group (pipes made of Muntz metal) comprises 22 pipes and the second (pipes made of high brass) comprises 18 pipes. The pipes had been in service in various locations in the hot-water systems of the buildings involved. Some were taken from horizontal lines in the basement, some from overhead distributors and some from vertical risers. The distance, in terms of feet of pipe, of the specimens from the hot-water generator was no less than 75 ft. and often IOO to 300 ft. In the majority of cases the water-heating equipment was provided with a regulator to limit the temperature of the hot water supply. The normal range of temperature in pipe systems of this kind is Ioo° to 160°F. Water Supples The average chemical composition of the water supplies carried by the pipes is shown in Table I. In evaluating the corrosiveness of a natural water, four factors are considered of prime importance: namely, hardness, alkalinity, pH and silica content. The waters listed in Table 1 are characterized by relatively low hardness, 10, alkalinity, low pH and low silica content. The waters of lower pH and higher CO2 content are more corrosive. Geographically, British India includes India or Hindustan proper, Burma, and a part of Beluchistan. In ancient times India occupied a very important position anlong the producers of minerals and metals; in fact, as late as the middle of the seventeenth century, it contributed a very considerable quota of the mineral and metal supplies of the world. The branches of the industry worthy of special note are gold, silver, lead, antimony, copper, iron, diamonds and other precious stones. The famous " Damascus steel" was originally manufactured in India, Damascus being only a mart; and it is interesting to note that even at the present time this product is still made in India. Prior to the discovery of diamonds in Brazil in 1728, India was the sole producer of this important mineral; and while no diamond-mines are now systematically worked, fine specimens are occasionally reported to be found in river-beds and in alluvial diggings. For ages, nearly all of the minerals of present commercial value have been produced and worked in India, and many of the deposits may still play an important part in the world's mining and mineral history. Despite the patient work of the ancient Indians, the limited knowledge they possessed of pumping and ventilation precluded the possibility of attaining any great depth in mining. Under special conditions, shafts have been sunk to 600 ft., but the average depth was much less. As a result of this limitation, the ancient miners confinecl their work to the available ores in sight, leaving large bodies of ore intact, which can be profitably worked with modern methods of mining. As an evidence of this statement may be mentioned the mines of the Kolar gold-fields in Mysore, which have reached in some shafts a. depth exceeding 2,400 ft. Traces of ancient work in these

Peche1bronn.—So far Pechelbronn is the only producing district. Figures are given in Table 2 covering the main features of the field, but these figures call for the following remarks: First, Pechelbronn should not' be considered as a single unit, it appears, but as a succession of small oil fields, each of which is affected by very variable conditions. Consequently, certain figures concerning production per acre, production per acre-foot, pressure conditions and thicknesses of oil sands would be so misleading that they have been omitted here. Second, as regards production methods, attention is drawn especially to the fact that 42 per cent of the oil is extracted by the use of shafts and galleries and the remainder by pumping wells. Exploitation, formerly confined to Oligocene sands, has been extended recently to Jurassic and Triassic oil-bearing formations. Gabian.—This small oil field, discovered in 1924, is almost exhausted. Exploitation to date is restricted to three wells. There were no drilling activities in 1933. Exploration.—During 1933, two exploration holes have been started in France. The first, in the vicinity of Lavelanet (Ariége) on the Dreuille anticline, has reached the depth of 2400 ft,.; the second, in the Autun Permian Basin, is drilling at 1300 feet. Northern Africa Morocco.—Drilling operations have been on a large scale in Morocco. In the Gharb district (Souk el Arba area), the deepest well was abandoned in 1933 at 7014 ft. Small irregular productive horizons were encountered in the Miocene at shallow depth, oil and gas showing in the Eocene, but no commercial oil field has been discovered. In the Djebel Tselfat, near Petitjean, a small production of oil was obtained from a Jurassic horizon. In the meantime deeper formations are being explored and a new structure in the vicinity is being tested. In Eastern Morocco, a well is drilling near Taza. Production in Morocco, about 2400 bbl., has not been listed on Table 2, owing to its origin—exploration wells.

THE distinction btween price reduction as a re-sult of lowering of production cost and price re-duction through unrestricted competition cannot be made too clear, because they are often interwoven in actual experience. Take the whole population of a town whose principal industry is shoe manufacturing as a concrete example. If the manufacturer is able to cut his price per pair in half because he has found out how to make a pair at half the cost, he will com-monly let a number of his men go, because reduction in production cost usually results from substituting cheap mechanical energy for expensive human energy. These people will normally find other employment. The workmen who remain employed usually earn more in dollars than they did before, and in spending it give employment where there was less before. Mining companies that initiate considerable enter-prises in foreign lands where the economic level is low, and where most of the people are busily but in-efficiently engaged in raising enough food to support themselves and their families, often find themselves confronted with an acute labor problem. If any con-siderable number of workers leave the land to work in and about the mines, those left on the land cannot raise enough food to keep them all unless they are taught better methods of agriculture and provided with equipment that will enable them to produce more with less expenditure of effort. Add to this the fact that managers commonly find that the "natives," as our British cousins designate them, usually need more food and a better balanced diet than they have been accustomed to in order to show anything above the lowest order of efficiency in industrial work,. and it is clear that to make a new industry possible in what may be termed an economic province involves increas-ing the productivity, not only of those who are em-ployed in it, but of the whole social group. It has already been pointed out that the employ-ment of large numbers of men in automobile manu-facture is only possible because the others have in-creased their productivity enough to turn out every-thing else that is needed without the help of the auto-mobile workers.

HAVING been engaged during the past year in the manufacture of ferro-manganese in a blast furnace, I have imagined that some further information on this subject might be of interest to that large number of members of the Institute who are engaged in the iron and steel industries. The great question of the economical production of good steel, ingot metal, or homogeneous iron (we scarcely know now what to call it) from good materials, and at reasonable prices, has, thanks to the intelligence and energy of a few American engineers, been successfully solved in this country. Structural steels containing chromium have become widely used in the last 20 years. In the earlier part of this period the major applications were in chromium-molybdenum aircraft tubing and similar special high-strength steels. During the past 10 years there has been a notable expansion in the use of chromium-bearing steel for structural purposes when welding was utilized for fabrication. The chromium-bearing steels introduced by Saklatwallal (chromium-copper), Kinzel2 (chromium-manganese-silicon), and Schultz3 (chromium-copper) are being extensively used at the present time. General Effects of Chromium Chromium is so widely known for its carbide-forming tendency that its capacity to stabilize oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorus is often overlooked. In low-carbon steels of the structural type these so-called secondary characteristics become more prominent. For this reason also, chromium in structural steel is definitely a toughening agent. As the carbon content is increased, the more widely known hardening effect becomes more evident. In low-carbon steels chromium increases the notched-bar impact strength substantially. This property persists at subzero temperatures and is utilized for low-temperature service in chromium-copper steel.4 Chromium also reduces any tendency to strain-aging embrittlement. In addition to improving the toughness of steels with the usual impurities, chromium has the specific property of counteracting the brittleness induced by high phosphorus.5,6 In steels low in carbon and alloys, chromium has an almost negligible effect on tensile strength, and a hardening influence is noticeable only in the stronger steels. The ductility of welds adjacent to the base plate is also improved by chromium, both in the range of foolproof welding steels having strengths of less than 80,000 lb. per sq. in. as well as in the higher strength steels.

ALTHOUGH many oil fields have been, and still are being, discovered in Oklahoma, the geology and structure of most of them have not become familiar to the general public because of the delay in securing government geological surveys and the reluctance of oil companies and other interested parties to give out their "inside information." Therefore, until official surveys are available, it behooves us to publish geological results as soon as possible. Fortunately the writer has been authorized by the Cement Field Oil Co. to publish his data on the Cement field, Caddo County at this time. LOCALITY AND DESCRIPTION The Cement field is situated in the part of Oklahoma known generally, until recently, as "Healdton fields," and lies 60 mi. (96 km.) northwest of the Healdton field proper. Like the Healdton field, it forms an approximate ellipse, trending northwest and southeast through the village of Cement on the St. Louis-San Francisco Railroad, on which it is reached in 2 ½ hours from Oklahoma City. In its geological structure, the field constitutes an anticline over 13 mi. (21 km.) long and from 1 to 3 mi. wide; the point of greatest width being not far from its intersection by the above-named railroad. The major axis trends north 75° west from the village of Cement; but eastward appears deflected (if field interpretations are correct) to about south. 45° east. About 5 mi. south lies an approximately parallel syncline, which may be conveniently called the Cyril syncline, the south and west boundaries of which may be distant many miles, but forming a closed basin', south of the Cement anticline. The position of the offsetting synclinal axis, which is believed to lie north and east of Cement, has not been discovered.

LESTER GUTTMAN* The question of whether classical thermodynamics alone imposes any lower limit to solid solubilities was raised during a discussion among various members of the Institute for the Study of Metals. Although our conclusions are not new,1 they may be worth reiterating, since confusion on this subject seems to persist. In a binary system (A,B), the conditions for equilibrium, at constant pressure and temperature, between a solid solution and a liquid solution are µAs = µAl [la] µBs = µbl [lb] Here µ denotes the chemical potential either of component A or B, as shown by the subscripts, and the superscripts s and l refer to the solid and liquid solutions, respectively. These two conditions are just sufficient to determine the compositions of both phases. Suppose, however, that the solid phase is found experimentally not to contain any of component B; then we cannot evaluate µbs, which is defined by Here nAs and nBs are the number of mols of A and B, respectively, in the solid, whose free energy is Fs. Eq lb cannot be used, but it is no longer needed: we stated at the outset that the solid has the composition "pure A," and only the liquid composition need now be determined, from Eq la. All the equilibrium properties of the system can be derived from Eq la rigorously and simply. Hence there is no purely thermodynamic reason to exclude phase diagrams which show precisely zero solid solubility. Marsh2 has objected to such diagrams as implying that even the transformation of pure A begins at the eutectic temperature. In any case, the user of the diagram must have a certain minimum knowledge of how to interpret it, and it would seem simpler to remember the general rule that eutectic temperatures have no significance for pure components, rather than to show, say, by broken lines, on a scale which will often be exaggerated, a hypothetical solid-solubility about which we know only that it is less than a certain amount. The case of an intermetallic compound in equilibrium with a binary liquid solution does not require a separate treatment since nothing in the foregoing was dependent on the nature of the components. Therefore, thermodynamics alone does not exclude the possibility that (intermetallic) compounds may exist with compositions always precisely those given by their chemical formulas. With the aid of extra-thermodynamic methods, one may conclude that the solubility of one solid in another is never exactly zero. On the other hand, one would generally expect that the solubility will be small unless the components resemble one another (as do the metals), or form weakly-bound crystals. Therefore, it is useful to know that when there is no direct evidence for solid-solubility, one may neglect it without violating thermodynamic principles.

IN presenting this paper it is not intended to enter into any discussion of the theory of the blast-furnace, but simply to give the results of a number of determinations of CO and CO2 in furnace gases, and some conclusions arrived at, and the result of an experiment made in hopes of increasing the production of CO2. In the first table, on page 198, is given the averages of a number of analyses of gases of different furnaces, and in the second, of two stacks of different sizes under varying circumstances. The conclusions arrived at as to what influences the production of CO2 are as follows: 1st. Kind of fuel. Bituminous coal not permitting the formation of as much CO2 as coke. 2d. Kind of ores. Rolling-mill cinder being much less favorable to formation of CO2 than hematite ores, magnetites probably less than hematites, but more than cinder. 3d. Length of time of contact of gases with ore. Small furnaces and too rapid driving both waste fuel by not allowing enough time for conversion of CO into CO2. 4th. The temperature of blast. The hotter the greater the quantity of CO2. 5th. Regularity of passage of stock through the furnace. The hanging and dropping of the stock, however slight, seems to pack it more solidly in the hearth, increases the resistance to the blast, and decreases the quantity of CO,. These are the most common causes noticed which influence the production of CO2, unless we except the one that might be considered the greatest of all, the one that has spoiled so many tons of iron, and the amiability of so many furnacemen, the one most dreaded, the great unknown. It would seem a self-evident proposition that the better the contact of the gases with the ore and the less with the fuel, the greater would be the amount of CO2 produced. To prolong the contact of gas with the ore furnaces are enlarged with advantage, and pains are taken to charge the stock in such a, manner as will best promote it. Still, with furnaces of most approved construction and most skilful manipulation, the gases leave the furnace so rich in CO, that not half the heating power of the fuel is obtained, and the highest

The process of treating granular activated carbon for return to service in the recovery of gold in carbon-in-pulp and carbon-in-leach circuits has been investigated. Carbons from two US mines, one Canadian mine, and a South African pilot plant operation were characterized before and after regeneration. Thermal regeneration of the carbon was investigated using factorial analysis to determine the effect of interaction of furnace temperature, retention time, and use of supplemental steam. The operation of acid washing the service carbon was investigated, including a comparison of the use of nitric and hydrochloric acids. The effect of quenching regenerated carbon was also briefly studied. Prom the data obtained, guidelines are given for effective regeneration operation.
