THE purpose of this paper is to invite attention away from the obvious, direct monetary costs of oil-field overdevelopment (as dis-tinguished from "social costs") to a consideration of the role played by the exercise of freedom to create even allegedly excessive1 plant facilities in contributing to the maintenance of equilibrium in the whole economy and in promoting material progress. The obvious and most commonly discussed effect of overdevelop-ment of oil fields is illustrated by the allegation that already the excessive development of the East Texas field has cost upward of $162,000,000;2 in other words, the drilling of 12,500 wells more than the number esti-mated as the requirement for economical recovery of the reserve has unnecessarily raised the total cost of development that amount. Many other illustrations of so-called excessive development of oil pools could be presented. Some of them, like Cushing, Powell and Long Beach, might be drawn from the era antedating widespread discussion in the trade of such matters as optimum well spacing, reservoir energy, the conservation rate of depletion of reserves, etc. Numerous other cases can be found in the records of the current era, which began with the introduction of rationalized restriction of production. Besides East Texas, there may be mentioned Oklahoma City, Centralia and, more recently, the town-lot development of Bloomingdale, Michigan.

During the year 1941, there was another increase in the production of oil in Argentina, to which the fields in the Comodoro Rivadavia zone in the Territory of Chubut and those of the Provinces of Salta and Mendoza all contributed. The total production for this period reached 22,013,472 bbl., which represents an increase of 6.8 per cent over that of 20,609,538 bbl. in the preceding year. This result is again attributable to the Government oil company, the Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales, which had a total production of 14,006,559 bbl. representing an increase of 1,531,904 bbl., or 12.3 per cent over that of the 12,474,655 bbl. of the year before. The presence of calcium and magnesium ions in iron ore pulps that are upgraded by selective desliming can result in indiscriminate flocculation of both iron oxide and siliceous gangue slimes. The removal of these alkaline earth cations in pulp solutions by chemical precipitation was ineffective as a means of deflocculation of quartz. It was shown by using various techniques (electron micrographs, abstraction, and streaming potential measurements, and cationic flotation tests) that heterocoagulation between the precipitates [Mg(OH)2, hydroxyapatite, and CaCO3] and quartz particles was the reason behind that observation. In addition, the precipitates adversely affected the recovery of quartz by cationic flotation, due to slime coating, a case of heterocoagulation. Magnesium hydroxide produced a uniform layer of coating across the quartz surface, while hydroxyapatite and calcite produced discrete, localized deposits dotting the surface.

IN the establishment of the relationship between weldability and hardenability, two methods have been employed in correcting for the grain growth produced in the heat-affected zone: first, the hardenability calculated from chemical composition1 may be corrected to the grain size observed in an actual weld,2 or, second, a hardenability test may be made on the steel quenched from a temperature high enough to produce a grain size comparable to that found in the heat-affected zone.3 In order to obtain grain sizes in the end-quench hardenability bar comparable to those resulting in the base metal from the welding cycle, a quenching temperature of 2100°F. has been used. In studies of the end-quench hardenability specimen quenched from 2100°F. instead of from a lower temperature of 1700°F., it is important to ascertain the relative cooling rates for various distances along the bar. It is a question as to whether the cooling occurs at the same rate or whether there is any significant difference from the standard cooling-rate curve published by Jominy and confirmed by others.4,5 This paper reports experimental evidence concerning the effect of quenching temperature on the cooling rates in the end-quench hardenability test. The effect of quenching temperatures on cooling rates has been studied by a number of investigators.6,7 French has considered this effect from both theoretical and experimental aspects. In French's studies on complete quenching of spheres and rounds, an increase in the quenching temperature caused an increase in the cooling rate at 720°C. at the center of the specimen. The center cooling velocity also has been shown to be dependent upon the surface per unit volume for the type of specimens studied; the velocity of cooling increases with an increase in the surface per unit volume. Three methods of indicating the rapidity of cooling of a body of metal during a quenching operation have been proposed: I. The time it takes for the metal to cool from the quenching temperature to a temperature halfway between the quenching. temperature and the temperature of the quenching medium (half-temperature time): Grossmann, Asimow and Urban7 justify the use of this criterion by the fact that the half-temperature time includes the temperature and time of incubation as well as the zone of formation of pearlite and, further, the data so derived accord very closely with experimental values. 2. TO determine the optimum inside dimension of an airshaft, it is necessary to strike the proper balance between the cost of power for air friction and turbulence losses within the airshaft, on the one hand, and the cost of sinking the airshaft, on the other. An airshaft larger than necessary is extravagant because the increased amortization rate exceeds the reduction in power cost. Conversely, an airshaft smaller than is needed wastes more power than can be justified by the corresponding reduction in amortization rate. The simultaneous adsorption of water and hydrocarbon vapor from natural gas by three grades of alumina has been studied at atmospheric pressure and temperature. Results of this investigation reveal that the presence of water vapor in the gas inhibits the adsorption of hydrocarbon vapor, although the presence of the latter does not have a pronounced effect upon the adsorption of water vapor. Adsorption of water-hydrocarbon mixtures from gas is divided into three phases. In the first, both water and hydrocarbon vapor are adsorbed; in the second, adsorption of water vapor proceeds while desorption of hydrocarbon takes place; in the third phase, the adsorbyt approaches complete saturation with respect to both water and hydrocarbon vapors. Both theory and experimental data can be applied to design and operation of commercial dehydration plants, and an illustration is presented. Introduction Dehydration of natural gas becomes increasingly important as the operating pressures employed in gas processing and transmission are increased above 500 ib. per sq. in. Gas produced from high-pressure wells is saturated with water vapor when it leaves the reservoir and it continues into the processing plant or transmission system in a saturated condition because of the substantial decrease in temperature due to expansion at the wellhead. Usually this gas is accompanied by liquid water and hydrocarbons that have condensed with the change in temperature and pressure. Without dehydration, gas temperatures must be held at relatively high levels to prevent solidification of gas hydrates. According to Hammerschmidt's data8 on the relationship of pressure to the freezing point of natural-gas hydrates, the minimum safe operating temperatures range from 55' to go°F. for pressures ranging from 500 to 3000 lb. per sq. in., respectively. Often it is difficult to maintain gas temperatures above the hydrate-freezing temperature because of climatic conditions, unless flow-line heaters are installed. Also, in processing gas for its gasoline content at high pressures, it is desirable to employ operating temperatures lower than the hydrate-freezing point. In distributing high-pressure gas, the large pressure drop from line pressure to town-gate pressure often prbduces sufficient cooling to freeze the regulators and disrupt consumer service. Therefore, it is highly essential to dehydrate high-pressure natural gas if smooth and economical operation is to be maintained at all times. Few published data are available on the simultaneous adsorption of water and hydrocarbon vapors. Mica is a platy mineral occurring in a variety of complex hydrous aluminosilicate forms with differing chemical composition and physical properties. Principal minerals in the mica group include: Muscovite-potassium mica (colorless or pale green/ ruby) Phlogopite-magnesium mica (dark brown or amber) Biotite-magnesium-iron mica (black or dark green) Lepidolite-lithium mica (lilac) Selected properties are given in Table 1. Muscovite is most important commercially with phlogopite of lesser use. The laminated structure of mica enables it to be split into very thin films which are transparent and tough as well as having outstanding dielectric and insulating properties. Commercially, mica is used in a number of forms (Chowdbury, 1941; Rajgarhia, 1951; Skow, 1962). Sheet mica consists of flat sheets mined from naturally occurring books of mica, free from defects and capable of being punched or stamped into required shapes. Sheet mica is separately classified into blocks, films, or splittings according to thickness. Built-up mica, or micanite, is made by arranging overlapping splittings in layers , cemented with a binder and pressed together at high temperature. Reconstituted mica, or mica paper, is made by depositing fine flakes of high-quality scrap mica in a continuous film impregnated with binder. Scrap and flake mica are normally unsuitable in quality or size for making sheet mica. Originally the term scrap mica referred to the waste byproduct of mining and fabricating sheet mica, and distinct uses were developed for this material. Subsequently it became economically feasible to mine lower quality mica for these uses, and the term flake mica was introduced. Although the two terms are still used somewhat synonymously, it is considered better, at least in the United States, to use the term flake mica in referring to mica mined for uses other than as sheet mica; and to restrict the term scrap mica to mica mined for or with sheet mica, but which will not meet the specifications. Synthetic mica, such as fluorophlogopite, is produced by slow crystallization of a melted blend of pure raw materials. Mineralogy In the true sense the term mica does not relate to, a particular mineral, but to a group or family of minerals of similar chemical composition and to some extent similar physical properties. These minerals are predominantly potassium aluminum silicates with varying amounts of magnesium, iron, and lithium. The precise formulas and isomorphic relationships of the various group members have been studied, but general agreement has not been reached (Grimshaw, 1971; Hurlbut, 1952; Skow, 1962). The general formula describing the chemical composition of micas is [X2Y4-6Z8020(OH, F)4, where X is mainly K, Na, or Ca; Y is mainly Al, Mg, or Fe; Z is mainly Si or Al (Deer, et al., 1962).] These minerals have an internal structure of the layered lattice type where the silicon atoms are in the center of a tetrahedral grouping of oxygen atoms. The groups are linked together in a single plane by three oxygen atoms that lie within the common plane. Each of these oxygen atoms is shared by two tetrahedra. These linked tetrahedral groups, when continually extended, produce a hexagonal network within the plane. This internal structure of the mica has been used to explain the ex-

THIS paper reports the results of static tension and torsion tests made on single crystals of alpha brass for the purpose of determining its elastic coefficients. 70-30 alpha brass was chosen because it has been used extensively in the study of the plastic deformation and because it has the following desirable characteristics: (1) face-centered cubic structure, (2) marked elastic anistropy, (3) low elastic modulus. In 1928 Masima and Sachs' using static methods reported the following values for the elastic coefficients of 72-28 pct alpha brass: S11 = 19.4 X 10-13' cm2 per dyne S12 = —8.35 X 10"' cm2 per dyne S44 = 13.9 X 10-13= cm2 per dyne These values were obtained from the measurements shown in fig. 1. The experimental points for both tension and torsion lie consistently below the lines drawn to represent them. Fig. 2 shows the stress-strain curves for their specimens. Only a few points in the elastic range of these curves were available to obtain their values for Young's modulus. Therefore, it was considered that a re-evaluation of these data was desirable. In addition a variation of from 1.13 to 1.485 kg per mm2 was found in the values of the critical resolved shear stress for 70-30 alpha brass reported by Burghoff,² Treuting and Brick: Martin,4 Maddin, Mathewson and Hibbard5,6 and von Goler and Sachs.' Therefore, it was desired to evaluate the conclusion of Boas and Schmid8 that a constant resolved shear stress and not a constant elastic shear initiates plastic deformation. Theoretical Considerations*: The elastic deformation of cubic crystals may be defined by three elastic coefficients (S11, S12, S44,) or three elastic parameters (C,,, C,, C,,). These coefficients or parameters are sufficient to define the stress and strain relations for cubic crystals in the generalized form of Hooke's law referred to Cartesian coordinates. Elastic parameters and coefficients in the cubic system are related by the expressions: C11 —S11+S12/(S11-S12)(S11+2 S12) C12=-S12/(S11-S12)(S11+ 2 S12) (S11 — S12) (S11 + 2 S12) [2] C44 =1/S44 PI It is possible to determine all the elastic coefficients for a cubic metal by measuring two of the three elastic constants: Young's modulus (E), torsion modulus (G), or compressibility (S). A study co.mbining stress-strain .measurements in conjunction with transmission electron microscoPy has been made with near equiatomic Fe-Cr alloys which were aged for various times at 500°C. Associated with this aging is a marked increase in deformation twinning. The outstanding feature of these twins is that they generate stress fields sufficiently great so as to give rise to spontaneous dislocation loop nucleation nearly normal to the propagating twin. This observation is in agreement with the theoretically predicted elongation of the stress field of a dislocation Perpendicular to its direction of motion as it moves near the speed of sound. Dislocation loop nucleation is more difficult in the longer aged alloys so that this energy absorption mechanism is not effective in hindering twin propagation. Since crack nucleation can readily occur near the tip of a twin, the aged alloys become extremely brittle when deformed in tension. Iron-chromium alloys in the vicinity of the equiatomic compositions become severely embrittled when aged at about 500°C. Fisher et 01.' have shown that this embrittlement is related to the decomposition of the original random Fe-Cr solid solution into a chromium-rich and an iron-rich phase. In addition, Mar-cinkowski et a1.' have shown that twinning becomes an increasingly more important mode of deformation as the aging time is increased. These results have been recently corroborated by the transmission electron microscopy study of Mima and amauchi . The Fe-Cr alloy thus seems ideal for verifying the predictions made in Parts I4 and 115 of this investigation where the behavior of large static or blocked twins and those of large dynamic or propagating twins, respectively, were investigated numerically. It was thus decided to measure the stress-strain curves generated by embrittled alloys that were aged for various times and to examine sections by transmission electron microscopy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Electrolytic iron and electrolytic chromium were vacuum-melted and poured into ingot form. The composition of the resulting alloy was found to contain 46.0 wt pct Cr (47.8 at. pct), the remainder being iron. The resulting ingot was swaged above 850°C into 0.250-and 0.400-in.-diam rounds. Compression samples of 0.250 in. diam and 0.400 in. long were cut from the smaller-diameter rounds. These samples were then sealed in evacuated quartz tubes and annealed for 30 min at 1150°C to produce a uniform and equiaxed grain size of mean diameter equal to 1.73 mm. They in turn were rapidly quenched from 850°C so as to preserve the condition of random solid-solution characteristic of the elevated temperature. The samples were then aged for various times up to 300 hr at 500°C in a massive Pb-Bi alloy bath. The samples were next polished and tested in compression at room temperature as described in Ref. 6 using an Instron tensile testing machine. The strain rate used was 0.05 in. per in. per min. The remaining larger round was converted into compression specimens of 0.325 in. diam and 0.500 in. long. This larger diameter enabled wafers of sufficient size to be prepared for examination by trans-mission electron microscopy techniques after subjecting them to a suitable strain. Foil preparation is described in some detail in Ref. 6. All foils were examined in a type HU-11A Hitachi electron microscope operating at 100 kv. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Fig. 1 shows the effect of aging at 500°C on the room-temperature stress-strain curves of the FeCr alloys. For greater clarity the origin of each curve has been displaced upward. The same origin has been used for both the 0 and the 0.1 curves. It is apparent that with increased aging times a sharp drop in load is observed at the yield stress which becomes more pronounced as aging proceeds. A loud sonic burst accompanies this drop and subsequent metallographic examination shows the sample to contain numerous twins. For intermediate aging times, a number of smaller twin bursts follow the initial large one. The total plastic strain associated with the twinning mode of deformation can be obtained by adding up the contributions AE~ from all i twin bursts, i.e., £,¦££,-, in the manner illustrated schematically in Fig. 2. The contraction of the specimen, as measured from the strip chart of the Instron, after suitably correcting for the elasticity of the machine, was converted into true strain using the assumption that there was no volume change and that the sample remained cylindrical. The elimination of metalloids in the open-hearth process depends on oxidation of the metal by diffusion of FeO from the slag (or absorption of FeO by the metal), with subsequent reaction between dissolved iron oxide and the metalloids carbon, manganese, phosphoms, and silicon. During an investigation on deoxidation with silicon, data on rate of oxidation of the metal were obtained, and these combined with certain other information, are presented here in an attempt to show the fundamental principles governing the diffusion of FeO from slag to metal. Inasmuch as the aim of the investigation was not a study of diffusion, certain data are lacking and it has been necessary to make assumptions on metal viscosity and effect of temperature on diffusion. These factors are known to exert a considerable effect on diffusional processes. Overoxidation, or supersaturation of the metal with iron oxide, is not taken up in this paper. Overoxidation has little effect on diffusion except under a few special conditions, and the discussion has therefore been limited to diffusional processes. Though the results given in this paper should be regarded as preliminary, certain of the conclusions drawn are definitely applicable to any steelmaking process. Previous Study of Absorption An extensive study of absorption has been made by the Department of Chemical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The results are of such direct interest in the problem of slag-metal reactions that it is feIt worth while to summarize them here. The cause and the effect of disposing of tailings water from sulfide ore milling operation were examined. Dissolved metallic ions as well as dissolved sulfur-oxygen compounds (polythionates) can prove injurious to life in water streams. Polythionates originate in alkaline flotation circuits and may cause a severe drop in the pH of stream waters. It is proposed that a suitable "aging" period be allotted to tailings water to ensure complete conversion of polythionates to sulfate prior to neutralization and clarification treatment. Discharging alkaline solid-free tailings water without aging will cause downstream acidification. Artificial oxidation of tailings water can be economical only if the concentration of thiosulfate in solution is low. When the concentration is high, it is possible to reduce the concentration greatly by first acidifying the solution, because at a pH below 4 thiosulfate in water reacts to produce a precipitate of elemental sulfur and higher order polythionates. The residual polythionates can then be oxidized at great savings by natural aging or by chemicals such as ozone, chlorine, or peroxide. Chlorine may be an economical reagent for converting polythionates to sulfuric acid but the residual organo-chlorinated compounds can prove to be toxic to aquatic life. Ozone and hydrogen peroxide which do not leave a residue are preferred oxidizers.

THIS paper is not the result of recent research with regard to any particular feature of iron metallurgy, blast-furnace practice or mechanical engineering. It is rather a series of notes with regard to contemporaneous progress in blast-furnace construction and operation, together with some suggestions as to changes and improvements that seem to be desirable. On April 1, 1930, a committee of the Chicago District Blast Furnace and Coke Association presented to that association a rather ambitious study of blast-furnace equipment, together with recommendations for the design of construction of a complete blast-furnace unit for the production of 1000 tons of pig iron per day. This report represented the result of months of study by members of the committee, all of whom were actively engaged in operation or design of blast-furnace plants. It is natural, therefore, that comments on the present state of the art should take this 1000-tons furnace, as recommended by the Association, as a basis for comparison with corresponding features of construction or design. See Table 1. In looking through this report at the present time, the significant difference is in the nature of the gas-washing equipment that today would be specified. In other respects, the installation would remain generally very much as it was outlined in 1930. The change in furnace dimensions would be very slight and of no especial significance, except with respect to changes in stock-line diameter, of which more will be said hereafter. The high-efficiency stove as developed by various designers is thoroughly described within this report, and few changes have taken place since. Blowing equipment shows refinement and reflects the improvement in steam engineering. For the past six years gravity surveys have been used for underground prospecting in the copper mines at Bisbee, Ariz. The primary purpose of the surveys has been to reduce the diamond drilling and crosscutting necessary for exploration. Since many of the orebodies are small, and geologic control is not always apparent, any information that will direct the drilling and crosscutting is highly desirable. Because of extensive development and exploration work in the copper mines at Bisbee, it has been possible to cover more than 630,000 ft of crosscuts on 30 levels with the gravity surveys. In the process the gravity procedures have been refined to a high degree.

The oil shales of the Green River Formation in the United States have been considered as a source of liquid hydrocarbons since 1908, with the first retort constructed in Colorado in 1917. However, it was not until 1944 that the mining characteristics of oil shale were investigated in a systematic manner. During the period 1944 through 1956, the Selective Mine and the Demonstration Mine (also referred to as the Anvil Points Mine) were operated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) near Rifle, Colorado. Significant progress was made in developing a room and pillar mining method by which oil shale could be mined safely at a very low cost per ton. Mechanical properties of oil shale were determined, safe room spans and roof support techniques were established, and drilling and blasting methods for oil shale were developed. As a follow-on to this USBM effort, a consortium of six oil companies with Mobil Oil Company as project manager carried out a research program during the period 1964-68 at the Mobil mine, located in the vicinity of the Anvil Points mine. Rock mechanics investigations were conducted as a part of this research program, and consisted of laboratory studies, in-situ stress determinations, and roof and pillar instrumentation. This paper will discuss the findings at the Anvil Points mine and Mobil mine to illustrate the stability considerations in underground oil shale mining.

THE principal producing areas of fire clay in Missouri are: (I) the east central district, which includes Audrain, Callaway, Montgomery, Warren, and Boone Counties [ ] (Fig. I); (2) the St. Louis district, which includes St. Louis and St. Louis County; (3) the north central Ozark district, which includes Franklin, Gasconade, Osage, Maries, Phelps, and Crawford Counties. [ ] Most of the semiplastict fire clay is found in Audrain, Callaway, Montgomery and St. Louis Counties, and in St. Louis. Flint fire clay is found in Callaway, Audrain, and Montgomery Counties and in most of the north central Ozark district. High-alumina [ ] diaspore clay is found only in the north central Ozark district, except a few deposits found in Montgomery County. This paper is concerned with the semiplastic fire clay that occurs in the east central Missouri district near Mexico, Audrain County, Missouri, which is mined by the open-pit method as practiced by the A. P. Green Fire Brick Co. About one-fourth of the semiplastic fire clay in that district is mined in shaft mines, and three-fourths in open pits.
