IN a recent article,† it was shown that in the blast furnaces in Germany that are lined with carbon blocks no cooling plates are used, and that shower cooling is employed on the hearth and bosh sections. While one of the authors was in Germany he was told that one furnace was being operated without even the shower cooling on the bosh section, though the hearth section was shower-cooled. In discussion of this interesting situation with a number of blast-furnace operators in this country, it was made clearly and promptly evident that shower cooling was very unpopular, probably because of its messiness and its ineffectiveness. Both of the causes for the dislike of shower coolings are reasonable ones. Shower cooling can be and frequently is messy, but the present cooling of blast furnaces leaves much to be desired on that score. Shower cooling is ineffective as compared with plate cooling, so far as its usefulness in keeping the bricks cool enough not to melt or fall to pieces is concerned. However, the introduction of carbon linings changes the situation. No one is concerned with keeping a carbon lining cool, for no temperature in the blast furnace has any effect on carbon, which is just as stable at 3000°F. as it is at 70°F. The only concern is for the shell-to keep it cool enough for safety and comfort and for that shower cooling is sufficient. Of course, with only the shell to cool, instead of the shell plus all the refractory material, much less water would be required, and the necessity for constant attention to the flow would be lessened, as the hundreds of inlets and outlets would be eliminated. Probably half of the water used in cooling a blast furnace is used for cooling the shaft and tuyeres and the remainder for the bosh and hearth sections. However, in view of the dislike of shower cooling in the United States, and particularly because at least one German blast furnace is operated with no cooling of the bosh section, thought was given to the possibility that a carbon-lined blast furnace might be operated without any cooling of the entire carbon-lined portion. For that reason a series of experiments was performed to determine what might be the temperature of the shell of a blast furnace protected by a carbon lining and operated under varying conditions up to a maximum inside temperature of 3000°F. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A schematic diagram of the experimental setup is shown in Fig. I and a photograph of the entire assembly in Fig. 2. THE determination of suitable and safe annealing temperatures is one of the most important problems arising in the operation of a copper rolling mill. Certain of the larger mills have worked this problem out for themselves and in these mills the operation has become more or less standardized. In some of the mills pyrometers are used to measure the temperature of the annealing furnaces and careful watch is kept to see that overheating does not take place. In a considerable number of the mills, however, dependence is placed entirely on the judgment of the operator. The almost total lack of literature bearing on this subject seems sufficient warrant for the publication of this paper. The discussion of this subject naturally divides itself into two parts: (1) The effect of annealing temperature on physical properties; and (2) changes in the microstructure of refined copper due to cold rolling and annealing. I. THE EFFECT OF ANNEALING TEMPERATURE ON PHYSICAL PROPERTIES For the purpose of investigating this phase of the subject six test bars were selected, varying in oxygen content between the limits of 0.036 and 0.070 per cent. ENACTMENT of Public Law 290 by the 78th Congress authorized the U. S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, to conduct an experimental program to develop the technology for obtaining oil from oil shale. In adopting and later extending this legislation, the Congress recognized the impending necessity of supplementing ground petroleum reserves with synthetic fuels. Under the provisions of this legislation, the Bureau of Mines, among other things, was charged with the responsibility of developing mining techniques, methods, and equipment for mining the oil shales of the Green River formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.

ONE of the earliest investigations of ground water in Florida was made in 1513 when Ponce de Leon arrived at St. Augustine in search of the Fountain of Youth. The history of the development of the water resources of the State shows that the large artesian reservoir that underlies Florida was discovered in the latter part of the last century. Part of that history is given by L. C. Johnson' who states that the first successful artesian well in Florida was drilled at St. Augustine between 1880 and 1882. After the City of Jacksonville failed to obtain a flow of artesian water at a depth of nearly 400 ft and abandoned the drilling, R. N. Ellis, City Engineer, and L. C. Johnson, using Johnson's knowledge of the geologic structure of the artesian reservoir, estimated correctly that artesian water could be obtained at a depth of about 500 ft. Thus began the development of the large artesian system in the northeastern part of the State. In 1908, the Florida Geological Survey issued its first report on the ground water of central Florida. More recent reports give the results of investigations that have been in progress in cooperation between the Florida Geological Survey and the U. S. Geological Survey since 1930. As a result, the ground-water geology and hydrology of Florida are now so well known that ground-water problems such as confronted early investigators no longer exist. However, new problems arise and new discoveries are made as the demand for more ground water increases with the development of the State. Water-Bearing Formations Descriptions of the geologic formations and a map showing their distribution at the surface are given in a recent report by Cooke.' The geologic formations that yield the ground-water supplies in Florida represent only a small part (about 1000 ft) of the total thickness of the sedimentary rocks (more than 15,000 ft) that underlie Florida. The water-bearing rocks that yield fresh water include more than two dozen formations that range in age from Eocene to recent. The Eocene formations, which consist chiefly of limestone, are the oldest and the deepest of the formations in Florida that yield fresh water to wells. In 1944, on the basis of a study of the foraminifera, the Applins -ivided the limestone of Eocene age into six formations, which are as follows, from top to bottom: Age or group Formation Jackson Ocala limestone icAvon Park limestone Claiborne -j Tallahassee limestone aLake City limestone Wilcox Salt Mountain limestone xOldsmar limestone The Ocala limestone and the underlying formations of Claiborne age, along with some of the overlying limestone of Oligocene and Miocene age, constitute the principal source of water in Florida and southeastern Georgia and generally may be regarded as forming one artesian aquifer or water-bearing unit. This aquifer is referred to in this paper as the Floridan aquifer, a name proposed by Parker.' In part of Seminole County alone more than 1000 flowing wells yield water from the Floridan aquifer. A yield of 6500 gpm, or about 9.5 million gal per day, by natural flow from a well penetrating the aquifer at Jacksonville, Florida, was observed in 1942. A yield of about 7000 gpm by natural flow was reported for a well 1390 ft deep at St. Augustine in 1887. The largest yield reported from a pumped well penetrating the aquifer is 7500 gpm, or about 10.5 million gal per day. The aquifer is also the source of some of the large springs, such as Silver Springs, whose discharge, according to measurements made by the U. S. Geological Survey, has ranged from 526 to 1350 sec-ft, or from 340 to 872 million gal per day. The top of the Ocala limestone, as represented by contours in Fig. 1, indicates in a general way the geologic structure of the formations that comprise the Floridan aquifer. Contracts between The Anaconda Co. and its miners at Butte, Mont., are not contracts in the true sense of the word. They are weekly verbal agreements which tacitly admit that the company, on the one hand, will supply the place, the tools, the material, and the opportunity and that the miners, on the other hand, will supply such effective labor that both parties will profit from the arrangement. Prices are seldom discussed at the time of hiring. The miner, in effect, is hired for a definite working place, as a contract miner, and if satisfied, tries to earn as much as he can. If he is not satisfied three courses are open to him: he can quit, he can ask for a change, or he can discuss prices or improved working conditions with the mine superintendent. Drilling for oil and gas in Missouri in 1935 was mostly confined to proven areas, but was marked by the completion of one of the largest oil wells, 53 bbl., and one of the largest gas wells, 2,000,000 cu. ft., drilled in recent years. A new oil pool, discovered in southern Cass County late in 1934, was further developed; a new pool in southern Platte County is possibly indicated by the completion of a single small well, which flowed naturally; and a deeper sand was developed in the Marota gas pool in Jackson County. Completions dropped to a lower level than in any recent year. A total of 73 wells, which included the deepening of 8 old wells, was drilled. In Bates County, there was one gas well with an open flow of 100,000 cu. ft., and one dry hole. Cass County had six oil wells with about 100 bbl. initial production; one gas well with an open flow of 500,000 cu. ft., and three dry holes. In Jackson County there were seven oil wells with 25 bbl. initial production; 24 gas wells with 7,358,968 cu. ft. open flow, and 27 dry holes. Platte County had one oil well, one small gas well and one dry hole. The oil well flowed naturally about 4 or 5 bbl. per day. It is rather difficult to obtain production figures on either oil or gas leases, but in cases where the figures have been given to the writer in confidence, they disclose conditions comparable with many other regions. One oil lease of 32 acres has produced 125,000 bbl. in four years, or nearly 4000 bbl. per acre. Another lease has made 50,000 bbl., or about 3000 bbl. per acre. It is probable that the total daily production at the end of 1935 was close to 200 hill. per day. A gas pool covering less than one square mile has made 110,111,000 cu. ft. in about 18 months. In this period, the open-flow capacity has been reduced from about 10,500,000 cu. ft. per day to about 3,500,000.

In order to increase the efficiency of underground coal operations, it is necessary to understand not only the operating system in detail, but the interrelationships between system components and the operating environment. With such an understanding comes more exact application of simulation and other operations-research techniques to plan and operate mining systems. One aspect of the coal-winning system in need of better definition, namely, the performance of continuous miners, is dealt with in this paper. Detailed discussion of this research will be found in a report by the authors. Mining Rate The performance of continuous miners-that is, the rate at which miners can deliver coal from an underground face to the outby transportation system-is dependent upon the geometric and geological conditions of mining, the characteristics of the mining machinery, and the skill of the machine operators. In order to predict mining performance, it is necessary first to identify these factors, secondly to devise a data-collection technique, and lastly, to select a method of data analysis for drawing meaningful conclusions. Factors Affecting Mining Rate: The factors that affect the mining rate can be conveniently grouped in the following four categories: Geological Factors-The natural conditions such as seam thickness, hardness, and cleavage. Geometrical Factors-The height and width of the entries and the angle of drivage with respect to the main entries. Machine Factors-The mechanical characteristics and physical dimensions of the machine, condition of the machine, condition of the bits, and related items. Other Factors-Operator efficiency, size consist of cutter product, etc. A classification such as given here is not rigid; some of the factors can be included in more than one of the categories and some can be combined as ratios. Data Collection The empirical nature of this investigation required measurements of variables under operating conditions in underground coal mines. A majority of the variables measured were continuous over a specific range of values; for example, the "width ratio" varied in practice from 0.25 to 1.00. "Dummy" values were assigned to certain operational variables in order that the variables would have numerical expression, i.e.: [ ] Data Analysis The method of analysis was to test a large model containing potentially significant variables and then reduce the model to one containing only the essential significant variables. The procedure of "scanning" a large proposed model and subsequently condensing the model consisted of two cycles of the same series of computational procedures. Correlation analysis, factor analysis, and regression analysis were the three statistical procedures that were used to derive the rate-generating equation. Correlation and Regression Analysis: Multiple linear correlation coefficients between all of the variables were calculated using the Pearson product moment formula along with the statistical significance of the correlation

The effect of fluid-flow rate and fluid viscosity on oil-water relative permeability determinations was studied using the "dynamic flow technique." In this work relative per-nleability curves were obtained for homogeneous small core .samples from several sandstorle outcrop form-utions. Radio-tracers were used for the determination of fluid saturation and for the detection of saturation gradients. Cobalt-60 in the form of cobaltous chloride was used as a water-phase tracer in some of the experiments. Iodine-131 in the form of iodobenzene and Mercury-20-3 in the form of mercury diphenyl were used as oil-phase tracers in other experiments. Flow rates for each phase were varied within a range of 2.5 to 140.6 ml/hr. Oil-phase vis-cosities under flowing condition,> were varied from 0.398 to 1.683 cp. The relative permbilities ob-tained were found to he solely a function of saturation and independent of flow rare, provided there was no .Saturation gradient induced in the core sample by "boundary effect." Even though equilibrium with re-sped to flowing conditions was obtained at the lower flow rates, where a saturation gradient exists, this equilibrium is of a "contingent"-type rather than the "steady-state" equi-librium implicit in the relative per-meability concept. The only effect of increasing the oil or non-wetting phase viscosity was to decrease the flow rate required for the elimina-tion of the boundary effect. Fairly good agreement between experimentally determined and calculated values of the boundary effect was obtained when the non-wet-ring oil phase was the only Flowing phase. INTRODUCTION In the characterization of reservoir rock, as well as in the solution of reservoir production problems, it is most desirable to have reliablc rela-tive permeability measurements for the rock and fluids of interest. Many techniques have been developed for the laboratory determination of the relative permeability of both large and small core samples. In varying degree, difficulties attend the use of all of the methods. Each of the methods requires the metered flow of fluids of known viscosity through the core sample under conditions wherein the pressure drop in the individual flowing phases can be measured or closely approximated. Since the relative permeability is a function of the saturation and distribution of the flowing fluids, some means of obtaining such information is also required. The laboratory determination of the relative permeability of a sample should give the same relative permeability saturation relationship that would exist if the sample were in place in the oil reservoir. The attainment of this objective is complicated by the fact that the use of small core samples for laboratory measurements is usually necessary. As a result, errors in measuring the relative permeability arise from boundary effects at either the fluid input or output ends of the sample; no significant boundary effect is anticipated at the sides of the sample normal to direction of fluid flow. At the input end of the sample a boundary effect exists if the flow fluids are not com- mingled as they would be in the reservoir. At the output end of the sample a boundary effect exists as a result of discontinuity of the capillary properties of the system. Here the flowing fluids leave the small flow channels and enter a collecting system having much enlarged flow channels. Thus, there is a tendency for the wetting phase to be retained by the core sample because of the attraction of the core sample for the wetting fluid. No reference is made to these boundary effects in either Darcy's equation or in the relative permeability concept. As a consequence the saturation effect peculiar to the input end of the core sample may cause an error in the effective permeability measurement, since some portion of the core sample must be utilized for commingling of the flow fluids. At the output portion of the core sample a saturation gradient or a saturation change along the axis of flow results. Since relative permeability is a function of fluid saturation, this saturation gradient may cause a variable permeability measurement, especially since extent and character of the saturation gradient can vary with fluid-flow rate. The most convenient method of minimizing the boundary effect, especially at the output end of the sample, is to flow the fluids of interest through the core sample at such high rates that the capillary forces arc insignificant as compared to the viscous forces involved in the fluid flow. Since recent work of a preliminary nature has indicated that fluid dispersion in the porous medium increases with the flow rate, the high flow minimizes the boundary effect at the input end of the core sample by enhancing the mixing of the fluids.

This paper records the results of the earth resistivity surveys made in the Godavari River in connection with the Ramapadasagar project. After describing the topographical and geological features of the area, the results of the investigation at the several sites have been mentioned. Further, a detailed account has been given of the resistivity methods adopted, the apparatus used and the interpretation of the curves. The resistivity measurements carried out over the water course have been specially outlined, and a review of the verification of the electrical indications by drilling in a number of cases, has also been presented. Introduction The Government of Madras has under consideration the Ramapadasagar project which is estimated to cost some Rs.660,-000,000 (about two hundred million dollars). The most essential feature of this project is the construction of a high dam across the Godavari near Polavaram for impounding the waters of this great river of South India, whose maximum discharge is 2 million cu secs in flood time. It is estimated that when the proposed reservoir is constructed, about one million tons of rice could be produced annually under irrigation. To those who have had any acquaintance at all with the recent distressing famine conditions which India has passed through and is still undergoing, the Lounteous effects which this project will bring about to the country in the future, are obvious. In the region of the proposed reservoir, the river flows for several miles through a hilly tract, hemmed in between flanks of hard, solid rock; but the river bed is mostly sandy. A few bore holes put down in this sandy bed touched rock at a depth of 180 to 200 ft. The river bed is about jo ft above the mean sea level (m.s.l.) and the bedrock was found at —125 to —160 ft m.s.l. The crest of the dam is proposed at +162 ft m.s.l. The proposed dam mould therefore be about 120 to 130 ft above the river bed, and the foundations would have to reach down nearly zoo ft below the bed at the deepest part. A number of alternative sites were proposed for investigation, and it became necessary to quickly ascertain the bedrock topography at these sites. Dr. M. S. Krishnan,* who was consulted in the matter, furnished a detailed account of the geological features of the region and suggested a geophysical investigation which the writer carried out from February to April 1944, employing solely the electrical resistivity methods. The total length of the survey lines for the electrical measurements amounted to 62,600 ft and the number of resistivity determinations was about 2500. IT is now recognized that several important types of reactions in metallic systems proceed by the formation of nuclei and the growth of these nuclei. The process of freezing is a simple example of this, as Tammann pointed out years ago.1 Tammann held that ' the rate, of freezing is determined by a rate of nucleation, expressed as the number of nuclei formed per unit volume of unfrozen liquid per second, and a rate of growth of these nuclei, expressed as the linear rate of radial growth in units of length per second. For isothermal freezing the conception is simple; for ordinary freezing, extending over a range of temperature, it is not as simple, for the values of the two constants must change with change in temperature. There is ample evidence that the postulated mechanism is correct even though a quantitative derivation of the rate of isothermal or of ordinary freezing in terms of the two constants has been lacking. In recent years other reactions have been found to proceed in a similar fashion. It has been well established, particularly by Bain,2-8 that. the formation of pearlite from the eutectoid decomposition of the solid solu-tion austenite proceeds in such a way, and Polanyi and Schmid, Tammann and Crone, Karnop and Sachs, and others9-11 have shown that the process of recrystallization proceeds in a similar way. Isothermal reaction rates have been determined for eutectoid decom-position by a number of investigators. Bain's2-8 work on the formation of pearlite from austenite is especially valuable in this respect-the type of isothermal reaction curve obtained, as illustrated in Fig. 13, showed an initial slow rate, accelerating to an intermediate maximum rate which then decelerated to the completion of the reaction; similar curves have been obtained by Wever and his collaborators.12 Other eutectoid decompositions show similar behavior: for example, the decomposition of the beta eutectoid in the copper-aluminum system, studied by Smith

Crack propagation in the region of a statically pressurized borehole is investigated to determine a role of the sustained borehole pressure following detonation in a blast. The case of a single-hole bench blast is reduced to a plate model, which is considered both theoretically and experimentally. Based on the principle of least work, it is hypothesized that the path of any crack in the plate will coincide with one of a family of maximum principal stress trajectories. These trajectories were computed, and critical experiments in glass, designed to test the effects of controlled crack origin and of changed trajectories from different loading configurations, confirm this hypothesis. It is concluded that under ideal conditions the crack path can be predicted and that cracks can be produced in the absence of either high-amplitude stresses or stress waves. Energy considerations for crack extension are discussed, and, based on the strain energy distribution, a relationship between hole burdens and spacings is revealed, a critical burden is demonstrated, and a maximum crater width is shown to exist.

Previous investigations of E. L. Tucker and R. E. Head' related in particular to the effect of cyanogen compounds on galena, sphalerite, and pyrite, and their behavior in the presence of such compounds. The present contribution deals with the floatability of the copper minerals and of pyrite. All experiments were performed on minus 200-mesh material, the method of preparation being the same as that described in the previous article. Flotation tests were made in a small mechanically agitated machine of 50-gm. capacity designed in this laboratory by Gates and Jacobsen.2 General Naval Stores pine oil No. 5 and potassium xanthate were used in constant amount in all of the experiments; these agents were selected because of their present wide use in the flotation of copper minerals. Time additions were varied to secure four final hydrogen ion concentrations, namely, neutral, 0.0005 per cent. CaO, 0.003 per cent. CaO, and 0.02 per cent. CaO. The variation in lime addition was introduced to include the range of alkalinities employed in actual flotation practice. The minerals employed were the purest obtainable. A portion of the liquidus curve has been determined for the binary alloy systems Ni-Pb and Cr-Pb. The solubility of nickel is 0.53 atomic pet at 372° and 18.63 atomic pet at 1200°C. Chromium shows low solubility, 0.634 atomic pet at 1210°C. Molybdenum and tungsten were also studied and found insoluble in lead, less than 0.005 atomic pet at 1200°C. INCREASED use of liquid metals of low melting X point for heat transfer, coating, joining, and other purposes has renewed interest in the solubility of structural metals in these liquids. A study of Hansen1 and current literature indicates that few liquidus curves at the low melting end of the binary diagrams have been accurately delineated. This statement applies particularly to the binaries of lead. The present paper is limited to nickel, chromium, tungsten, and molybdenum in lead. In early studies2, 3 of the lead end of the Pb-Ni system, a monotectic at 1340°C was established. Tammann and Oelsen' determined the solid solubility of nickel in lead at 20°C to be 0.023 wt pet. Recently Pelzel5 determined the liquidus curve from the eutectic temperature of 327° up to 727°C using a segregation method. In the present paper this part of the curve has been checked and extended to 1244°C. The Pb-Cr system was first studied by Hindrichs.6 He pointed out the existence of a monotectic at 1470°C and indicated a tentative liquidus. Recent corrosion studies of Fe-Cr alloys in lead suggest that chromium is more soluble than iron in lead.7-8 The solubility of tungsten in lead according to Inouye8 is about 30 wt pet at 1200°C. Appreciable solubility of molybdenum in lead might therefore be expected. Experimental Various experimental techniques have been employed in the determination of solubility in liquid metals. For low solubility, thermal analysis is unsatisfactory. A segregation method was used by Pelzel3 in his study of the Pb-Ni system. In this procedure separation of liquid and solid is possible due to difference in density. In the technique of Kleppa10 a single piece of material is maintained in contact with the liquid metal in evacuated Vycor vials. After equilibration, solid and liquid are separated by tilting. Keck and Broder" measured the weight of a piece of the solid solute before and after immersion in a pure solvent bath; the weight loss was a measure of the solubility. All of the above procedures are time-consuming since they permit only one determination per run. Numerous samples for analysis may be taken from the melt in the method described by Gurinsky and CO-workers.10 The rate of extraction of samples is limited only by the time required for equilibration. In the present work, a modification of this method was employed. A 150-g charge of analytical reagent grade lead and the added metal* were contained in an Alun- dum crucible. All the tunneling machines discussed in this chapter are Calweld machines. I have divided the machines designed for soft-to-medium formations into three groups, correlated with typical formations and estimated compressive strengths: 1) Running sand and silt requiring blade cutters. 2) Chalk and clay, requiring drag-type cutters, for compressive strengths ranging from 0 to 2000 psi. 3) Sandstones, hard clays, and limestones, requiring disk cutters, for compressive strengths ranging from 2000 to 20,000 psi. All of the soft-to-medium-formation machines are powered by electric hydraulic or diesel hydraulic pumps. The pumps in turn drive hydraulic motors for the torque reaction. The soft-to-medium-formation machines are enclosed in a 360º shield with a cutting shoe, a center portion of the shield housing the mechanical equipment, and a tail shield. Tunnel supports are usually required, and the supports are normally erected in the tail shield. Our first machine was built in 1963, and all but five of the machines illustrated in the figures with this chapter were built in 1966 and 1967. Some of the machines manufactured will be discussed in the following sections; specific features as development has progressed will be pointed out. HARD-ROCK MACHINE The Calweld hard-rock machine has been designed along basic and accepted principles for a hard-rock mechanical borer. The features of this machine are as follows: 1) Direct electric motor drive through a planetary gear reduction ring and pinion gear, and then to the cutting head through a hollow drive shaft.

FOR many years kettles used in the melting and refining of lead and other nonferrous metals and alloys have been made of cast iron. The logic of this probably lies in the fact that cast iron has been known as a material of construction for vessels of this type much longer than steel, and satisfactory fabrication from it has been more easily accomplished and better understood. As the capacity of lead refineries has increased, it has been only natural to increase the size of kettles. Today kettles of 150 to 250 tons are not uncommon. As the size of the kettles increased and better shapes were designed, the uniformity of material of construction became more important. Records kept over comparatively long periods of time have shown that the length of service of kettles has not been uniform. Many causes contribute to this and the importance of each has not yet been evaluated. Kettle design, kettle setting, method of firing and material of construction have been changed from time to time to obtain better service, but the variation in length of service is still great. A kettle may fail during the first few heats or may last through more than one thousand heats. The purpose of this article is not to present the conclusions of a finished piece of research on kettle manufacture and use, but to present a series of observations made over considerable time in the hope that others will publish data and that all may be correlated into a logical scheme which will result in better service and longer kettle life.

In September, 1930, H. N. Eavenson, then Chairman of the Coal Division, appointed a Committee on Methods of valuing Coal Propelvties, with John B. Dilworth as chairman. The latter prepared a schedule' of features for consideration under the general headings of Undeveloped and Developed Coal Properties. These subjects were divided among the members of the committee and during the next year written discussions of his allotted subjects were received from each member. Mr. Grimes and Mr. Eavenson discussed the entire list,. These discussions were mimeographed and a set sent to each member before the meeting of the Institute in February, 1932. There was a general discussion at that meeting. At the meeting in February, 1934, Mr. Dilworth submitted a report12 which summarized the accumulated opinions and data and presented the conclusions of the committee as a whole on the subjects embraced in it's schedule. Members of the committee expressed the desire that some of the individual opinions be published for reference. Mr. R.
