PRESIDENT DOWLING'S ? ADDRESS I feel that it is a great honor to be invited to reply to this toast on behalf of the Canadian Mining Institute. I wish to thank you for your very cordial reception of the toast and for the sentiments expressed in your invitation to the Institute to cooperate in a series of joint meetings. It is an earnest of the mutual regard which the peoples of the two countries have for each other. We have been allies in a very great war and the feelings of good-will engendered by that alliance will survive, I believe, through the strenuous times of peace. The other nations of the alliance had through many changes in history, fought each other and for each other and had thereby gained a clear conception of the social aims and moral character of their peoples. With this knowledge came mutual trust-the one element necessary for united action or lasting agreement. On this continent the two peoples are drawn together by bonds of a common origin and, largely, a common language. No war has been necessary to force declarations of national aims on which to base terms of amity and now our peoples who had studied the arts of peace together have together passed through fire-drawn into the conflict by a like horror at the sacrilege of the crucifixion of the rights of humanity. Their courage and manhood has been tested at Ypres and Chateau Thiery by the great assayer war, and, together, with thankful hearts we see the triumph of right over night and better than ever know that we have the same conception of the government of the people for the people. We are met to celebrate the close of the association of our brethren it the front in the fight for freedom for the world-a freedom that to us hems natural but which to the majority of the allied nations is a heritage derived from the protest made by the American colonies against German ideas of government of which remnants had until then survived in Great Britain.

Advances in numerical methods of analysis and computer technology during the past decade have brought many formerly intractable ground control problems within easy reach of present day graduate mining engineers. However, the new technology brings with it new problems. The identity of these problems are largely those arising from a lack of familiarity with the capabilities and limitations of the new technology. In this regard, the central problem in ground control planning is the calculation of ground motion associated with mining. The fundamentals of this problem leading to a form suitable for computer programming are therefore reviewed. Solution procedures in the broad sense including the gathering of input data and the interpretation of output are described. Computer program capabilities necessary for ground control analysis are discussed and the steps necessary to implement an analysis are outlined.

The role of the filter medium in continuous-vacuum filtration and the special circumstances which influence the resistance to flow through the porous cake and filter cloth are discussed. Due to negative pressure differential, gas bubbles evolve in the slurry, constrict passages in the filter cake and medium, and further restrict flow through the tortuous channels. Filtration is a liquid-solid separation process taking place at a porous medium under a pressure differential. The liquid passes through the medium; the solids are retained on the medium as a partially dewatered cake. Filtration is far from a simple process and has been described in terms ranging from "complex" to "subtle." Because of the many variables involved, no unified filtration theory has been developed, and the filtration process is still considered very much an art. In industrial filter design, basic relationships, whether derived for idealized conditions or developed empirically, are usually adapted to suit local conditions. In the mining industry where continuous-vacuum filtration is the main dewatering process, the physical state of the concentrates and the relatively low pressure differentials permit the assumption that the cakes are noncompressible, an assumption which leads to the use of theoretically sound rate equations. Notwithstanding this simplification, there are other problems, unique in the application of vacuum to dewatering, and until now completely ignored, which demand special attention. The basics of filtration involve the capture of solids on, while permitting the flow of liquid through, a porous layer of cake and cloth. Flow is determined by the structure of the solids which make up the cake and the particles permanently attached to the cloth. The problem of this structure, essentially one of solid geometry, has been considered insoluble by Hatscheckl as early as 1907 and by Freshwater as recently as 1967. Since cake structure is determined by the slurry parameters, that problem is far too large for inclusion in this study. For theoretical considerations, uniform buildup of the filter cake must be assumed; and for efficient practical operation, the resistance of the medium must be kept constant over long periods. The latter can be achieved by careful selection of the filter cloth, since the greatest part of the total filtration resistance will develop at the cake-cloth contact. This paper discusses the role of the filter medium in continuous vacuum filtration and the special circumstances which influence the resistance to flow through the porous cake and the filter cloth.

THE present note is intended as an addition to my previous communication on the volumetric determination of manganese, read at the Roanoke meeting," it having been suggested that the circumstances under which my experiments had been conducted, were essentially different from those met with in the analysis of irons. The method used in these experiments is the same in all its details as that described in the paper referred to. I have made seven experiments in all: two of these were in duplicate on half a gramme of a sample of spiegel dissolved in hydrochloric acid; one was on the same amount of spiegel with the addition of 25 C.C. of a standard solution of potassium permanganate; one was on the same amount of spiegel with the addition of 35 C.C. permanganate and much organic matter, viz., one drop of castor-oil, two or three drops of coal-tar benzol arid of gasolene (petroleum), about ten of alcohol, portions of starch and of sugar about the size of a small pea, and about half an inch of a common match cut into shavings. This organic matter was added to the manganese solution after the hydrochloric acid had been replaced by nitric, and the solution was heated until the wood-shavings had disappeared. The fifth experiment was made by dissolving half a gramme of spiegel alone in nitric acid; the sixth by dissolving half a gramme of spiegel in nitric acid with the addition of 25 C.C. potassium permanganate, some oxalic acid, half an inch of a match, one filter-paper 7 cm. in diameter, and two drops each of castor-oil and turpentine; and the seventh experiment by dissolving half a gramme of spiegel in hydrochloric acid and adding 35 C.C. permanganate, without however taking the precaution to evaporate off all the excess of hydrochloric acid. Under these circumstances, one would expect that if organic matter exercises any influence on the determination, it would be plainly evident in the results obtained. W. M. Bertholf—This is an excellent report of a well-conducted investigation, of sufficient scope to provide generally useful information. Some years ago we had occasion to test the Humphreys spiral on the middling from our table plant. The conclusions reached in this investigation come as no surprise to us. In certain applications it is virtually impossible to improve on the spiral from the monetary returns point of view even though its "efficiency" may be low. We have noted that in all successful applications of the spiral the feed is "classified," hence we were somewhat disappointed in the showing the spiral made on the Poplar Ridge coal, the only one of the four which could really be considered the equivalent of a classified feed. As was noted in the paper, however, this coal contained a considerable amount of middle and high-gravity material, apparently more than enough to make up for the theoretical advantage of small particles in these categories. A comparison of particle size in the various specific gravity classes of the four coals is given in table XXV. Table XXV. Comparison of Particle Size in Various Specific Gravity Classes. Examination of figs. 3, 6, 7, and 8 reveals a general similarity of behavior for all coals except Black Eagle. Would the authors care to speculate on the reasons for the difference in the distribution curve for the sink 1.60 material in the washed coal of fig. 3 as compared to the others? This difference is particularly noticeable in the 8xl4-mesh size. Was there a "shape effect"? J. D. Price and W. M. Bertholf—The performance data on three of the coals studied appear to be typical, but there are certain departures from the general pattern in the case of the Poplar Ridge coal which are large enough to deserve special consideration. For example: 1. Despite the high proportion of sink 1.60 material in the feed, it was not possible to make a corresponding proportion of high-ash reject. (See table XVI.) 2. THIS study was undertaken primarily to determine the reasons for certain variations in the soundness of gravel aggregate taken from a number of widely separated points on the Tennessee River. Under laboratory tests, concrete made with these various aggregates in some cases exhibited marked differences in specific gravity crushing strength and durability. Gravel was studied in detail from Chattanooga to the mouth of the river and to a lesser extent from Chattanooga to Knoxville. The causes of variation were determined, and variational curves were constructed, which accurately predict the composition of aggregate at any point on the river and therefore its relative suitability for use in concrete. The aggregate at any point is suited for making sound concrete; the variance of suitability is due to varying percentages of sandstone and weathered material, which are less sound than other constituents. INTRODUCTION When it is stated that the aggregate from one point is inferior to that from another, it must not be construed to mean that the gravel is unfit for use. The classification upon which such aggregate ratings are based is largely arbitrary, thus inferiority or superiority is merely relative. Samples of gravel were selected from stockpiles at the dams of the Tennessee Valley Authority under construction, from the stockpiles of private companies along the river, and from samples taken by the gravel- exploration barge of the T. V. A. One hundred or more gravels of each size studied were selected at random by taking small handfulls while walking around the piles. These were separated according to the different mineral or rock constituents present, and the percentage of each constituent was obtained by counting. At least three such samples were taken from each size, and all checked with one another within a few per cent. The results were then averaged. In order to check on the accuracy of such sampling, a whole sample was taken from one point after the gravel was thoroughly mixed. The two methods gave approximately identical results. IT would be of great importance to our understanding of the phenomena of fracture in metals if a unique relationship could be established between stress and some easily measurable parameter of deformation up to the fracture. It is known that no such relationshir, has been found when the parameter was the mechanically measured strain,' the major part of which is plastic. To this end, annealed stress free*' specimens of 61s aluminum alloy were ** Freedom of stress in this particular case means absence of those stresses which can be checked by the technique employed. tested at room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature (—195OC), by first maintaining the same temperature from the beginning until the end of the test, and then with crossovers from one temperature to the other. Three major factors had to be taken into consideration in designing the specimens and testing equipment. The test setup must allow X-ray pictures to be taken while the specimen is under load (for as much as 2 hr at a given load). Provision must be made for maintaining the test specimen at the temperature of liquid nitrogen as well as at room temperature. In addition, the specimen must be able to rotate to allow the X,ray beam to take in as large a sample of grains as possible, to maintain centering, and to correct for effects of large grains. The final design of the specimen and equipment is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The specimen and grips are hollow, enabling liquid nitrogen to be poured in through a funnel-container arrangement while the specimen is rotating. The diameter of the specimens at the 2 in. gage section is 5/16 in. with a 3/16 in. diameter hole through the center. A small pilot valve in the lower grip allows a very small stream of liquid nitrogen to escape, thus assuring circulation of the liquid at all times. A low temperature silicone grease-tissue paper packing is used to seal all joints. The specimen is held in the grips by a pin. Spherical socket joints at top and bottom are used to allow for proper alignment. The grips are connected to the thrust bearings by means of plastic couplings to decrease the heat flow. Rotation is accomplished by means of a motor which drives a plastic gear (integral with the lower coupling) through a semiuniversal joint to allow for deforma- tion of the specimen. The torque applied to the specimen is very small. The maximum stress caused by this torque at the highest loads reached was found to be less than 200 psi, The whole unit was mounted in a 10,000 Ib testing machine. An insulation cage was placed around the specimen to cut down air circulation, and consequent frosting of the specimen, and also to reduce radiation and convection heat losses. A narrow window, covered on both sides with a thin plastic materiai allows the X-ray beam to reach the specimen. The solubility of aluminum in cryolite melts has been determined by measuring the weight loss of aluminum submerged in melts contained in closed silicon nitride crucibles. The solubility in pure cryolite has also been checked with radioactive isotopes. The solubility decreases with increasing A1203 concentration, decreasing temperature, and decreasing cryolite ratio. The change of aluminum solubility in pure cryolite with the activity controlled by using Al-Ag and A2-Cu alloys supported the assumption that aluminum would dissolve in the form of monovalent ions according to the reaction 2AI + A1' —3 A1'. DURING the electrolytic production of aluminum, the electrodeposited metal redissolves in the bath in some form and is subsequently oxidized back to the former ionic state. This dissolution is believed to cause a decrease in current efficiency. Reported data on the solubility of aluminum in cryolite melts are scattered. The mechanism of the dissolution has not yet been determined, although certain tentative interpretations have been proposed. Many previous studies were performed under different test conditions. Studies were performed in open Systems and closed systems,'o and some were apparently not given sufficient time to Saturate." The solubility can be determined either analytically or gravimetrically. The analytical determination involves measurement of hydrogen gas evolved when frozen cryolite bath saturated with aluminum is treated with sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid. The gravimetric determination, adopted by many investigators,'-37'3>14 involves measurement of weight loss of the metal after equilibration with a known amount of salt. It appears that the former technique yields much smaller values of solubility than the latter technique. This large difference in results strongly suggests that the dissolved metal in the cryolite melt is no longer in the metallic state. In the present study, the solubility was determined by the gravimetric technique at various activities of aluminum using A1-Ag and Al-Cu alloys. An attempt was also made to determine the ionic (or atomic) state of the dissolved metal from the solubility data. 1) EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus. Preliminary tests demonstrated that silicon nitride was suitable as a container material since it is compatible to both the fluoride melts and molten aluminum. Crucibles were made from silicon powder nitrided with Nz gas at 1600°C. The good compatibility between crucible and melts is due to the near perfect nitrogenation of silicon. Only small amounts of silicon were found in the aluminum metal after the experiments. The crucible dimensions were 90 mm inside height, 38 mm ID, 105 mm outside height, and 50 mm OD. Close-fitting lids made of silicon nitride were also prepared. The crucible was placed in a close-fitting graphite crucible heated by a vertical Kanthal furnace, Fig. l. The lid and crucible are fastened tightly together by the condensation of vaporized bath in the narrow gap between them. The temperature was measured in the wall of the graphite crucible and controlled within * 5°C. The temperature difference between the measuring point and the interior of the melts was initially determined. Materials. The materials used were: Greenland cryolite (impurities CaF,, 0.5 pct; AlzO3, 0.2 pct; high-purity aluminum metal (purity 99.99 pct); A1203 and AlF, (provided by Nippon Light Metal Co., Ltd); reagent-grade NaF and CaF2; and 99.9+ pct Ag and Cu. Powdered reagents were carefully dried before use. A1-Ag and A1-Cu alloys were prepared before the experiments; their composition was checked by analysis

This one has a small load, but barrow men carry ordinarily 250 lb., occasionally 400 if with a helper. He goes about 18 miles a day and the cost is about 25c. gold per ton-mile, though it varies widely. 4. Coolie delivering coal balls in Pekin. He carries about 65 lb. On some roads with a different arrangement a coolie carries 133 lb., making about one ton-kilometer per day. 5. Truck used by the Government Fuel Yard at Washington. Carries 71/2 tons in an hour as far as a barrow man carries 1/4 ton in a day.

The work described in this paper was carried out under the sponsorship of the Foreign Economics Administration and in cooperation with the Departamento Nacional da Produggo Mineral, Rio de Janeiro. The project was undertaken to obtain complete data on the variations in washability of coal to be used for coke manufacture in the steel industry and to determine the economy of preliminary hand-sorting operations. The coal-producing industry of Brazil is in that pioneering stage in which operating practices and methods are just being developed. Increased wartime demand for fuel, coincident with a drastic curtailment of foreign supplies due to lack of shipping facilities, has put a tremendous pressure on the national industry to furnish more coal. Under this incentive, production facilities are being -expanded- and new methods of operation are being tested. Such changes are being developed both by improvement of existing methods that originated in the field and by adaptation and modification of methods introduced from the United States and Europe. These mining conditions and mining practices in Brazil are typical of what the American mining engineer will find in many instances when he goes pioneering into the developing coal fields of the Southern Hemisphere. The producing coal fields of Brazil are all in the southern states of that country. The coal measures are in a band roughly paralleling the coast and extending in a generally southwesterly direction from northern Sao Paulo through the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul to near the Uruguayan border in the vicinity of Bajé. The accompanying map1 (Fig. I) shows the general location of these fields and also the principal routes of movement of both national and imported coal in a late pre-war year (1940). A rrevious paper1 reviewed some of the properties of clays and shales and presented some data on the nature of the gelling phenomenon. It included a brief discussion of origin of clays and shales, their composition, structure, retention of water, ionization, base exchange, and the nature of the gelling of water suspensions. Other publications of the Institute2-8 have discussed the properties of clays and their relations to drilling-fluid behavior and control. It is the purpose of this article to present some new data obtained and arranged in a different manner and making possible a better understanding of the chemical reactions involved in the control of drilling-fluid characteristics during the normal drilling operations. Experimental Procedure The difficulties involved in the measurements of the flow characteristics of plastic fluids are too familiar to recite. The possible applications of some of the well-known instruments to this problem have been adequately discussed by Hobson9 and he has given an excellent bibliography. Although there are many viscosimeters of varied design, none of them appear to fulfill the most obvious demands of accuracy in the measurement of clay or shale suspensions. Since the fluid characteristics are dependent on the rate of flow of the fluid, and the viscosity usually falls off very rapidly as the rate is increased, it is clear that the first requirement is that the instrument shall be capable of a wide variety of speeds. The viscosity of the fluid at any fixed and constant rate of flow is also a function of time, so that the second demand is that the instrument shall be capable of a constant and continuous motion for a prolonged period of time.

WHAT is mineral wool? This question is frequently asked by those unacquainted with its manufacture. The word "mineral" suggests that it is of mineral origin; the word "wool" suggests that it is of animal origin; but the only similarities it has to wool are its fibrous character and its white fleecyness. Mineral wool is a fiber produced by melting rock to a glasslike condition and blowing the glass into fine white, wool-like threads. A -number of the products fabricated from-mineral wool are used for some form of insulation, but mineral wool is adaptable to many other uses. It is used in the manufacture-of pipe covering designed to with; stand the high temperatures produced in steam pipes. In a similar form of insulation it is used to cover boilers and furnaces. It is used in ,the fabrication of upholstery tow for sofas and car seats: In acoustics it has many uses, such as acoustifibroblock, which is used in floors to destroy sound and vibration, and acoustic mat, which is used under carpets to destroy sound. In the insulation of houses, loose wool and granulated wool are used beneath attic floors and between the studding in frame buildings to prevent the escape of heat in winter and the entrance of heat in summer. Mineral wool is used also in fabrication of linofelt, which is a quilted form of insulation; in fibrofelt, which is an insulating board; in the fabrication of lith, which is an insulating block; in anti-fibroblock ,which is used in insulation and refrigeration; in flexfelt; in loose wool; in pressed block; in heavy oiled wool; in dark oiled block; and for many other purposes. The materials used in the manufacture of mineral wool are of two kinds. The first is a rock which contains silt, clay and silica, with smaller amounts of lime and magnesia. The second is a more highly calcareous rock which may carry a small amount of magnesia. The latter is used as flux to assist in the melting of the former. The relative proportion of the alumina-iron-silica content to the lime-magnesia content is normally as fifty to fifty but a considerable range is possible.

THIS survey is one of the more recent tests of geophysical methods of prospecting by the Dominion Observatory and the Geological Survey of Canada, of which the purpose is to find out what application such methods may have to geological problems in Canada. The Malagash salt deposit lies on the north shore of Nova Scotia about 40 miles east of the New Brunswick boundary, and forms a part of faulted and folded Carboniferous strata. The salt beds are exposed only in the mine workings, which are about 1000 ft. deep and at one place extend for 1000 ft. along the strike. Lack of rock exposures, complicated folds, and faults make it impossible to predict the location of salt away from the mine. A survey of an area in the vicinity of the mine was therefore undertaken to find out whether the salt could be located by the torsion balance and whether its extension from the mine workings could be traced. As the gravitational effects at Malagash may be fairly typical of those at other concealed salt deposits in the Carboniferous rocks of the Maritime Provinces of Canada, the survey has a direct bearing on prospecting for other deposits. The survey was made in 1934 by A. H. Miller in collaboration with Dr. W. A. Bell, of the Geological Survey of Canada. Observations began on June 15 and were completed four months later, on Oct. 15. Definite gravitational effects including a lowering of gravity were observed over the deposit. The survey also disclosed one other area of low gravity east of the mine but whether this area is underlain by a large body of salt is not yet established.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION by R. Q. Shotts The sizing of coal particles is one of the most important beneficiation operations performed from the time coal is broken at the face until it is delivered to the customer. Indeed, in many cases it may be virtually the only such operation performed in that interval, although it is most often accompanied by some comminution. Sizing, as the term implies, is a separation of the broken coal particles into arbitrary groups, each group containing particles within restricted mass, volume or size limits. Size itself is not a rigidly defined property, but is actually determined more by the operating principles of the sizing device than by unique properties of the particles themselves. Particle size cannot be uniquely defined independently of particle shape. Taggart l says, "In fact, it is not possible to state the size of a single irregular body by means of a single dimension; such possibility exists only for regular polyhedra and their limit, the sphere." In view of the scarcity of regular polyhedra among coal particles, even though most appear to approximate a cube, we actually define size in terms of a surface opening through which the particle barely will or will not pass, or of two openings, the smaller of which retains all particles of the group under study and the larger of which passes all of them. Alternatively, size is expressed in terms of rate of settling of particles in a fluid under closely controlled conditions. Historical Sketch2-Taken from Coal Preparation, 2nd Ed. "Sizing is the process of separating mixed particles into groups of particles all of the same size or into groups in which all particles range between certain definite maximum and minimum sizes. In coal preparation, sizing is generally accomplished by passing the coal over screens. Separation by differential settling in air or water currents has been adapted to the special field of separating very fine sizes, and these processes are in commercial use to a relatively small extent in the coal industry. Separation with screens is a very old industrial practice. Agricola described the use of screens for ore treatment in the middle ages. In the literature of the British coal industry references were made to the screening of coal as early as 1589, but the practice of extensive sizing for the market did not become general until the last half of the nineteenth century. "In America, the practice of sizing developed first in the Pennsylvania anthracite region, beginning with the use of rakes in the mine working places to recover coarse coal. EARLY in the month of August, 1877, a miner in Gold Hill, Nevada, made the unlucky remark that, according to his observation, that month was usually quite free from accidents in the mines. Never was presage wider from the truth. When the month closed twelve mishaps had occurred, killing six and wounding nine persons, and for the rest of that year the Comstock mining communities were kept in a ferment by the frequent occurrence of appalling disasters. There was a real tidal wave of calamity sweeping over the mines, which has not been repeated since, and according to common report was never known before on the Comstock. I was much interested in studying the character of these misfortunes, which also aroused concerted action on the part of the miners, and I have collected a list of the accidents which took place from July, 1877, to May, 1879. In 1774 a Swedish chemist, C. W. Schule, first recognized manganese as an element. That same year Schule&apos;s associate, J. G. Gahn, isolated the element manganese for the first time. In 1856 the Bessemer process of steelmaking gave birth to the economic importance of manganese. Later, in 1882, Robert Hadfield discovered high manganese steels. Although the primary use of manganese is in the ferroalloy industry, two additional important uses for manganese are making chemicals and dry cell batteries. Manganese is also vital to plant and animal life. Various chemical compounds of manganese are used in fertilizers, feeds, glass manufacture, paints, varnishes, and for numerous medicinal and chemical purposes. For the study of industrial minerals and rocks, only the chemical and battery grade material is of- concern, but for the sake of comparison, metallurgical aspects are included in this presentation. Although currently the world&apos;s largest consumer of manganese, the United States is producing only minor amounts of ore at the present time. This is due primarily to the fact that although huge deposits of manganese occur within our borders, all are of such low grade as to be economically unfeasible to mine. For many years various government agencies and segments of private industry have devoted sizable sums of money and time in an attempt to upgrade ores from the various deposits, and also in an attempt to recover manganese from blast furnace slags. In view of current world prices, and the quantity of high grade material available, there is little likelihood that any of these approaches will be found to be economically feasible in the near future. Geology and Mineralogy Mineralogy There are over one hundred minerals that contain manganese. These minerals vary from those with compositions that are predominantly manganese to those having only minor percentages. In general, it can be said that all primary deposits of manganese are carbonates or silicates. The most productive and profitable have been those of sedimentary origin and residual concentrations. Examples of these residual types of deposits are associated with the metamorphosed lodes of Madhya, Pradesh, India, and the lateritic deposits of Orissa and Bihar, India; nodules in the residual clays of the Philippine Islands, US southern Appalachians and Arkansas, Ghana, and Brazil. Sedimentary manganese deposits are best exemplified by the Nikopol district of Russia and the Tchiatouri area of Georgia, USSR. Hydrothermal replacements are characterized by the rhodochrosite deposits of Butte and Phillipsburg, MT.
