The object of this paper is to present, a survey of some of the physical properties of sheet nickel silver when subjected to cold rolling and when annealed at temperatures extending from 350" C. throughout the coininercial annealing range.. A number of alloys were taken from stock and analyzed. Four of these, representing low nickel and high nickel both with and without lead, were chosen for the tests. The bars (which were then coiled) were annealed together in a mill muffle and afterwards pickled in a 10 per cent. sulfuric-acid solution and cold rolled in stages of approximately one number (B. & S.) at a time to No. 18 B. & S. gage. After each stage, suitable samples were set aside for physical tests. Additional samples were chosen for tests after the bars were rolled to Nos. 8, 10, 12, and 14 gage. These samples were annealed together in the mill muffle and, after pickling, were finished on 0.050-in. gage, yielding a series of specimens 2, 4, 6, and 8 numbers hard for the subsequent annealing tests. Tensile test pieces 9 by 1 in. (22.9 by 2.5 cm.) were cut from both lots and the central portion was milled to give a test section 2 1/2 in. long by 1/2 in. wide. A distance of 2 in. was marked off on the edge of each specimen with light punch marks. In the case of the annealed alloys, Erichsen test pieces 4 by 235 in. were also taken.

For the purpose of developing combinations of higher strength and conductivity than are obtainable by heat treatment alone in the age-hardening copper alloys, an investigation has been made of the effects of combinations of heat treatment and strain hardening on the properties in question. The investigation was limited to a study of the alloys containing nickel and silicon; nickel, silicon and cadmium; and cobalt and silicon. The experiments made in the course of the study are described in this paper in three groups: 1. The effect of hard drawing subsequent to heat treatment on the mechanical and electrical properties of the alloys. 2. The effect of low-temperature aging on the properties of heat-treated and hard-drawn alloys. 3. The effect of strain on the rate of aging of quenched nickel-silicon-copper alloys.

The broad picture of petroleum refining engineering during 1934 continued to show a tendency in the direction of highly specialized processing improvements, particularly in manufacture of lubricating oil. The slowing up of the trend toward higher octane products in non-premium gasoline noticed in 1933 was definitely established as a fact by 1934 development, with just a slight indication of recession. No outstanding engineering achievements can be credited to 1934 in refinery cracking, unless the completion and successful operation of the 30,000-bbl. crude capacity combination cracking and skimming unit at Texas City, Texas, and a 20,000-bbl. similar unit in the East can be listed as such. Development and improvement was largely a continuation of previous lines of endeavor. Such trend as there is shows a continnation in the direction of very large integrated skimming and cracking units. A lessening of the cost of ethyl lead, coupled with the reaching of the octane number "ceiling," kept the subject of "reforming" low-octane gasoline into high-octane products pretty well in the background. Considerable interest, however, was shown during the year in cracking and polymerizing of refinery gases into high-octane motor fuel. The commercial development and application of this activity was greater in 1934 than during any previous year. Fair yields of gasoline of satisfactory stability and high antiknock value were reported, ranging from 2 to 8 gal. per 1000 cu. ft. of fixed refinery gas, yields varying with both the nature of refinery gas treated and processing methods. Assuming economic feasibility, regarding which there is still difference of opinion, gas polymerization offers the industry a possible outlet for its gases more in keeping with its basic chemical composition and value. The increased interest of railroads and heavy-duty truck and tractor manufacturers served to focus more attention on diesel fuels. The publicity given the Union Pacific diesel train, the Burlington "Zephyr" and others operated on special diesel fuels served to revive the intimations and fears of several years ago as to the ultimate replacement of the gasoline motor by diesel engines in even the passenger car field. ALTHOUGH the number of minerals that are ferromagnetic) or highly paramagnetic is strictly limited, it has been known for some time that many minerals have slight but supposedly characteristic magnetic susceptibilities. With the exception of pyrrhotite, however, sulphides have been thought nonmagnetic. A new magnetic separator has been made available recently in limited quantity to research laboratories. This device, the Frantz Isodynamic Separator, has been used for the separation of various nonsulphides from each other. Its application to the separation of sulphides, however, does not seem to have been reported. In the Richards Mineral Dressing laboratories, the success achieved through the use of this device in separating associated sulphides has been so startling as to lead us to believe that it constitutes a magnificent adjunct to heavy-liquid separation and to quantitative mineragraphy as a tool for the mineral investigator. THE SEPARATOR The separator (Fig. I) consists of: I. A powerful magnet, the strength of which can be adjusted by means of a rheostat; 2. A vibrating chute of nonmagnetic metal on which the mineral to be separated is made to flow (Fig. 2); 3. A feed bin and adjustable feeder; 4. Receptacles for the collection of products; 5. Means for changing, setting, and accurately reading the two slopes of the chute; viz., the cross slope and longitudinal slope. The separator is made operative by the special shape of its pole pieces, which ensures a strongly converging field. It is said by the makers of the machine that the pole pieces apply a constant mechanical force to a particle of given susceptibility, regardless of its position in the operating space of the separators.* Susceptible particles, therefore, behave as though of lower specific gravity than under ordinary circumstances. This effect, combined with the slopes of the chute and the action of the vibrator, causes a stratification not unlike that obtainable on a shaking table. The chute is of rectangular cross section, and shallow; it is broadened toward the discharge end and divided longitudinally by a partition into two compartments that lead to the collecting receptacles. IT is somewhat surprising that among the many mechanical devices that were brought into the State of Colorado, that the Brückner cylinders alone have stood the test for roasting ores. The brick walls of the Arey and Stetefeld furnaces have been remodelled into reverberatories and compound reverberatories, their binding and anchor irons have been forged into hoes and shovels, while the Crosby and Thompson cylinders have been rent by the ruthless hand of the foundryman searching for a tough piece of boiler plate. Two only of these furnaces remain in operation, of the large stock that came into Colorado by car-loads several years ago, and they occupy only a subordinate position to some reverberatories on the North Boulder Creek. As the Appalachian mountains reach their maximum development in western North Carolina, we find also in that region indications of extensive dynamic disturbances and alterations undergone by the rocks in' connection with these mountain uplifts. Among the minor results of these changes have been the formation of numerous dikes or a veins " of exceedingly coarse granitic materials, which in some places are mined for the mica which they contain, and in other places are quarried for kaolin. These dikes are filled with quartz, feldspar, and mica, in varying proportions, very coarsely crystallized. Sometimes the mica (generally muscovite), sometimes the feldspar (generally albite or orthoclase) predominates. When the mica is present in considerable quantity, and in large crystals, the dike is usually spoken of as a mica-vein, and is often worked for mica. Sometimes these crystals of mica occur on one side or the other; sometimes on both sides; and sometimes they are largely concentrated toward the middle of the vein, or, it may be, distributed throughout the dike with a considerable degree of uniformity. In many cases the crystals of mica are too small and few to permit the working of the vein as a micamine ; in other cases, very little mica is present, and the feldspar constitutes the larger part of the material. This feldspar of the dikes undergoes, through the weathering action of the atmosphere, certain chemical changes, resulting in its alteration from feldspar into kaolinite—the kaolin of commerce. These dikes vary considerably in size, ranging from a few inches to several hundred feet in thickness, and up to many hundred yards in length. They are generally parallel to the schistosity of the crystalline rocks, which, however, in some cases, they cross at varying angles. The kaolin in those dikes which occur in the Unaka or

The high temperature physical properties of graphite are reviewed and interpreted in the light of present day knowledge of the mechanisms affecting these properties. The thermal and mechanical behaviors only are discussed and, whenever possible, comparisons are made with other refractory materials. Possible further studies are indicated, including some carbide work. AS long as the term high temperature implied only temperatures up to about 1000°C, the materials problems which arose could usually be handled by fairly conventional metal alloy types, such as the Co-Cr-Ni superalloys, for which there exists a great deal of technology. Perhaps this temperature can still be considered an upper limit for normal applications, but it is certainly true that the number of abnormal applications is increasing rapidly. The advent, in recent years, of ram-jet and rocket missiles and of high power nuclear reactor heat sources has raised a host of questions concerning the basic problem of what material to use in the temperature range up to 2000°C and higher. While there are, of course, many metals, in the second and third transition series, which melt at considerably higher temperatures than this, these metals are, at present, pretty well excluded from practical use by other considerations, such as re-crystallization, chemical activity, or excessive plastic deformation. The behavior of metals, from the standpoint of dislocation theory, is just beginning to be understood and thus there is some hope for the future development of very high temperature metals, but the immediate problems would most logically appear to have solutions involving the nonmetals, such as the refractory ceramics and graphite. For this reason, there is presently a great deal of engineering and experimental research being performed on the latter materials, much of this research being exploratory in the sense of gathering new property data. The situation, so far as graphite is concerned, is somewhat more fortunate than with the other refractory solids in the sense that a great deal is already known about its basic properties. This stems both from the fact that the carbon-carbon bond has been of interest to chemists for a long time (and graphite can be considered as a very large aromatic molecule, if desired) and the fact that its properties, both as a function of temperature and of radiation damage, are of critical importance to nuclear reactor designers. It is still true, of course, that such fundamental questions as why graphite remains solid to such a high temperature and why it has such a high thermal conductivity cannot entirely be answered at the present time. It is, nonetheless, meaningful and instructive to consider such problems in the light of existing knowledge. This is what the present paper will attempt to do. Before going on, it may be appropriate to classify graphite and justify its discussion before readers primarily interested in metals. Graphite is comparatively unique among materials in that there is always a property or group of properties which precludes calling it either a metal, a semiconductor, or a ceramic. It has the high electrical and thermal conductivities of a metal, but the artificial, poly-crystalline types show a negative thermal coefficient of electrical resistivity, generally characteristic of semiconductors. On the other hand, semiconductors, by definition, show an ever increasing resistivity as the temperature is lowered, whereas graphite approaches a finite, and, indeed, a rather low resistivity in the region of 10°K and, furthermore, a good single crystal of graphite has a positive temperature coefficient, as for a metal.' On still another hand, its porosity and brittleness at lower temperatures would put graphite in the ceramic class although, unlike most ceramics, it is readily machinable and has a high resistance to thermal shock. All things considered, it is probably more nearly appropriate to call graphite a metal than anything else. Although certainly outstanding in some ways, graphite has its peculiarities and, especially if the reader is unfamiliar with the data, it is probably valuable to review some representative property variations at high temperature. This review is meant to be mainly illustrative and no attempt has been made to be exhaustive. Review of High Temperature Properties At ordinary pressures, graphite does not melt, but sublimes directly into the gaseous phase at about 3700°C. Although the phase equilibrium diagram is still in some doubt, graphite will melt, at a slightly higher temperature, at pressures in excess of about 100 atm. The chief difficulty of using graphite in an oxidizing atmosphere is that the reaction rate becomes quite high at fairly low temperatures. If a threshold oxidation temperature2 is defined as the temperature at which graphite loses 1 pet of its weight in 24 hr, the value in air is 450°, the value in steam is 700°, and the value in carbon dioxide is 900°C. Efforts are presently being made to raise this threshold temperature either by impregnation with a retardant of some type (sodium tung-state and phosphoric acid, for example) or by a suitable metal or oxide coating. It is probably fair to say that, to date, these attempts have not shown any outstanding success in all respects. Platinum and palladium are the most generally useful, most ductile and least rare members of the platinum family. They have many important applications in the pure state but for other applications it is frequently desirable to harden them and otherwise modify their properties by alloying small amounts of the other platinum group metals with them. These alloys are frequently required to withstand very drastic forming operations and to possess certain mechanical properties to fulfill specific requirements. For these reasons a knowledge of the tensile properties and annealing characteristics of pure platinum and palladium as well as their more useful commercial alloys is important to the user and the fabricator. The present work was undertaken to fill this need. Rather brief (5 min.) annealing treatments were employed to render the data of maximum practical value and all tests were conducted upon 0.050-in. dia. wire, initially reduced 50 per cent in area by cold drawing, for the same reason. Conclusions 1. Pure (thermocouple grade) platinum reduced 50 per. cent by cold drawing exhibits the following tensile properties: ultimate tensile strength, 36,000 lb. per sq. in.; proportional limit, 27,000 lb. per sq. in.; elongation, 2.5 per cent in 2 in.; reduction in area, 95 per cent. When fully annealed by treatment at 1100°C. its properties are: ultimate tensile strength, 20,700 lb. per sq. in.; elongation, 30 per cent in 2 in.; reduction in area, 93 per cent. 2. The addition of alloying elements in moderate amounts markedly increases the strength and annealing temperature without much detriment to the ductility. In discussion of Mr. Macdonald's paper, I can say little more thau to add t~ the general acknowledgments of iguorae, and like several of the gentlemen who have preceded me, make one of those confessions which are thought to be good for the soul. Having had some experience in the erection of bridges during past years, I am aware that We yet need much information in order to proportion them to the best advantage. I would more especially like to emphasize three of the points mentioned by Mr. Macdonald, as among those upon which we lack knowledge; these are: first, the behavior of steel; second, the proportions of compression members; and, third, the influence of the size of a bar upon its strength per square inch. First, as to steel. While we all acknowledge this as the material of the future, our position map be said to be still one of expectaucy. On Aug. 5 and 6,1918, and Mar. 26, 1919, the writer made an investigation of the mine-water neutralizing plant at the Calumet mine of the H. C. Frick Coke Co. The object of this plant is to develop a process of treating the water pumped from the mines so that it may be rendered suitable for use at the power plants of the mines and also at the coke ovens; at the same time, eventually producing a byproduct which will have enough commercial value to provide a sufficient revenue to place the plant on a self-sustaining basis. The Calumet mine is situated in Mt. Pleasant Township, Westmoreland County, Pa., on a branch of the southwest branch of the Pittsburgh Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad. It is about 6 mi. (9 km.) southeast of Greensburg, the county seat of Westmoreland County. The coal, which is the Pittsburg or Connellsville seam, lies at a depth of about 200 ft. (60 m.) and is brought to the surface by means of a shaft. The output of the mine averages 200,000 tons of coal annually, all of which is made into coke, either at the ovens, at the mine, or at byproduct ovens. There are 260 coke ovens at the mine. The continued development of the coal fields of Pennsylvania and the increased use of electric power in the operation of the mines has brought the problem of an increased water supply for the plants to the attention of the coal operators. This is especially true in the Connellsville coking region, where large quantities of water are used in quenching the coke at the ovens. Many of the streams receive the drainage from the mines; and as this water is highly acid and contains sulfur in various forms, some method of treatment is necessary to render it suitable for use at the plants of the mines. With this end in view, the H. C. Prick Coke Co., about 4 years ago, installed at its Calumet mine a plant for experimental purposes, in an endeavor to develop a process that would provide a maximum amount of suitable water at a minimum cost. From a purely technical point of view, the result of these experiments has been encouraging. The company is now endeavoring to place the plant on a commercial basis.

A method was developed to quantify the three mineral species, sphalerite, galena, and pyrite in seven concentrator products. Intermineral effects were studied and a statistical analysis was undertaken to assess the accuracy and reproducibility of the method. The method is both rapid and suitable for plant control purposes. Furthermore, it requires only semiskilled laboratory personnel to carry out all the analyses.

CLAMER* (Philadelphia, Pa.).-Sulphur is not so detrimental in its effect if oxygen is also present, so that in sulphur-carrying bronzes and brasses, it is advantageous to maintain a certain percentage of oxygen. As a matter of fact, it would be possible sometimes to correct difficulties by actually adding oxygen. If the cathodes were charged directly into an electric furnace in a neutral or reducing atmosphere, a very high grade of copper would result by a simple melting operation. This would very largely eliminate the loss occasioned by melting in a reverberatory furnace. In such a furnace a large amount of slag is produced during the oxidizing stage of refining. Notwithstanding the fact that melting in an electric furnace might be somewhat more expensive than melting in a fuel furnace, the ultimate result would be a saving and the production of a very high grade of copper.
