The decline in deliverability of conventional natural gas supplies and the general energy crisis have resulted in national programs directed toward the commercialization of energy conversion technologies. Foremost among these efforts is the gasification of coal. Coal reserves represent our most abundant fossil fuel resource. Its utilization is hampered both by its form value and its pollution qualities. Coal gasification is commercially feasible today and projects requiring hundreds of millions of dollars and years of construction time are underway. This paper provides a perspective for the scope, time, and cost of these venture projects. Resource requirements, plant products, and coal gasification processes are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the effects of coal feedstock and prices on plant economics.

IN 1930, Taggart, Taylor and Knoll1found that addition of various electrolytes to suspensions of ground minerals resulted in the stopping or starting of Brownian movement of the suspended particles. On the basis of the many new facts found, they rejected the "classical "[t] theory of Brownian movement and proposed an "ionization" theory. This new theory was further supported in later publications by Taggart.3,4 The acceptance of the ionization theory by men in the field of flotation may be judged by the mention given this theory in Gaudin's "Principles of Mineral Dressing,"5 Wark's "Principles of Flotation,"6 as well as in a recent paper by Fitt, Thomas and Taggart.7 The proponents of the ionization theory have gone further than the mere statement of the new theory. A parallelism between the Brownian movement of mineral particles and their behavior in flotation was reported.1,3,4 Likewise, the correlation between flocculation-dispersion of mineral particles and the Brownian movement of these particles has been investigated.7 Bankoff15 has suggested that "slime-coating" can also be directly correlated with the Brownian movement of the slime particles. In each of the instances mentioned it is the ionization theory of Brownian movement that has been used to "explain" the correlations that were found. The essential conflict between the kinetic theory and the ionization theory can be understood best by a brief description of each. The kinetic theory* proposes that Brownian movement is caused by the impacts of liquid molecules against the solid particles. At any instant of time, the molecular impacts on all sides of the solid particle will not balance, and the particle will receive a push in some direction. According to this theory, all particles suspended in a liquid are in Brownian movement. However, if the particle is very large, the impacts on all sides will very nearly balance and the motion will not be noticeable. Another factor, besides the size of the particle, that affects the magnitude of the Brownian movement is the viscosity of the liquid-the greater the viscosity, the less the displacement of particles by Brownian movement. This theory has been verified experimentally by measurement of the velocity of Brownian movement, and by measurement of the compacting of suspensoid particles under the influence of gravity.2 The originators of the ionization theory found that the addition of various electrolytes to slime pulps caused cessation or commencement of Brownian movement, depending upon the chemical nature of the particle and the electrolyte. At the Chicago meeting of the Institute, May, 1884,I had the pleasure of announcing the introduction of a new machine for fine crushing, or The Blake multiple-jaw crusher, which, in combina tion with the ordinary Blake breaker, could be used in the reduc tion of ores or any hard and brittle substance to almost any degree of fineness. I am now able to give some practical results derived from its use on an extensive scale, on the gold ores of South Caro lina and the iron ores of Lake Champlain, together with some accurate and detailed statistics of the cost of crushing over one hundred thousand long tons of magnetic iron ores of the Chateaugay Ore and Iron Company at Lyon Mountain, Clinton County, N. Y., about thirty miles west of Plattsburgh. The construction of the multiple jaw-crusher, since the date of my first paper, is the same, except in the substitution of main swinging, instead of main sliding, or toggle jaw,—thus doing away with the upward thrust on the tension rods and the wear incident thereunto. (See Fig. 1.) It has also been found, in case of the fine crusher, that is, in machines of not over 4 inch width of opening, that the use of several small machines with a series of jaw openings, say 15 inches by 4 inch, is better than one large machine with a series of openings 24 by 4 inch, or 36 inches by 4 inch, as at first constructed. Many details of the method of holding in jaw-plates, etc., have been perfected. Without giving any details with respect to the different mills built upon the Blake 'system, let me state that, although it has proved possible to carry any hard and brittle material with crushers alone to a fineness such that all particles will pass a 30-mesh wire screen, still the economical limit of such crushing will be found somewhere between 14 and 20. Michigan has had another record year. Its production has been maintained by the development of fields discovered in 1938. Two minor fields were listed as discoveries in 1939. These are in the southwestern part of the state, where the greatest drilling activity took place. During the year 1465 tests were completed, of which 828 were oil wells, 56 gas wells and 581 dry holes. The four southwestern counties—Allegan, Ottawa, Kent and Van Buren—had 1077 tests drilled, while nine other southwestern counties had 70 tests, making a total of 1147 for this part of the state, 78 per cent of all drilled during the year. Michigan's production of 23,400,000 bbl. during 1939, equal to an average daily production of 64,110 bbl., exceeded 1938 by 4,655,000 bbl., thus establishing another annual record, which brought the cumulative amount for the state to a little over 125,000,000 barrels. A map showing location of Michigan oil and gas fields was published in the TRansactions in 1939 (Vol. 132, p. 353). Active Oil Fields.—The Walker field, near Grand Rapids, Kent County, had a rapid development during the year. Traverse limestone production was discovered here in September 1938, and development has been rapid during 1939. At the end of the year 5500 acres have been proved by drilling. The Traverse limestone is found in Walker field at a depth of about 1810 ft. The Temple field, Clare County, was the most active in Central Michigan. Its production is from the Monroe dolomite at a depth of 3890 ft. In this field 2500 acres have been proved by 125 producing wells. Michigan's largest producer for 1939 was drilled in the Temple field, with a rated potential of 8760 bbl. per day. The Wise field, Wise township, Isabella County, discovered in 1938, had a steady and orderly development because the operators agreed on a staggered 20-acre spacing program. So far 760 acres have been proved for production from the Dundee limestone, found at 3650 feet. This situation, coupled with ECA spending abroad, has caused American capital to look outside our national boundaries for investment opportunities which are further made attractive by some relaxing of restrictions to gain American dollars and patronage.

The distribution of the oil phase in Berea sandstone resulting from increasing and decreasing the water saturation by imbibition was investigated Three types of distribution were recognized: trapped, normal and lagging. The amount of oil in each of these distributions was determined as a function of saturation by carrying out a miscible displacement in the oil phase under steady-state conditions of saturation. These conditions were maintained by flowing water and oil simultaneously in given ratios and by using a displacing solvent having essentially the same density and viscosity as the oil. A correlation shows the amount of trapped oil at any saturation to be directly proportional to the conventional residual oil saturation Sor The factor of proportionality is related to the fractional permeability to the water phase. Part of the oil which was not trapped was displaced in a piston-like manner (normal part) and part was eluted gradually (lagging part). The observed phenomena are more than of mere academic importance. Oil which is trapped may well provide the fuel essential for forward combustion and thus be beneficial. On the contrary, in tertiary recovery operations, it is this trapped oil which seems to make current techniques uneconomic. INTRODUCTION A typical oilfield may initially contain connate water and oil. After a period of primary production water often enters the field either from surrounding aquifers or from surface injection. During primary production evolution and establishment of a free gas saturation usually occurs. The effect and importance of this third phase is fully recognized. However, this investigation is limited to a two-phase system, one wetting phase (water) and one non-wetting phase (oil). The increase in water content of a water-wet system is termed imbibition. In a relative permeability-saturation diagram such as the one shown in Fig. 1, the initial conditions of the field would be represented by a point below a water saturation of about 35 per cent, i.e., where the imbibition and the drainage curves to the non-wetting phase nearly coincide. When water enters the field the relative permeability to oil decreases along the imbibition curve. At watered-out conditions the relative permeability to the oil becomes zero. At this point a considerable amount of oil. called residual oil, (about 35 per cent in Fig. 1) remains unrecovered. Any attempt to produce this oil will require that its saturation be increased. In Fig. 1 this would mean retracing the imbibition curve upwards. In addition, processes like alcohol and fire flooding, which can be employed at any stage of production, involve the complete displacement of connate water and an increase, or imbibition. of water saturation ahead of the displacing front. Thus, in several types of oil production it is the imbibition-relative permeability curve which rules the flow behavior. For this reason a knowledge of the distribution of the non-wetting phase, as obtained through imbibition, whether "coming down" or "going up" on the imbibition curve, is important.

GENERAL treatment of the various minerals of importance in refractories appears in the chapter entitled "Refractories" elsewhere in this volume. The present chapter is restricted to a discussion of minerals of the sillimanite group and brings up to date the excellent information contributed by Prof. Paul F. Kerr to the first edition (1937). Since the appearance of that edition, the status of the group has changed some- what. Kyanite remains the preferred source material for mullite refractories but total consumption of kyanite has increased considerably.85 The exigencies of World War II forced an increased dependence on domestic sources and led to an intensification of the search for higher-grade deposits of kyanite and allied minerals. The first discovery of massive kyanite similar to that of India has been reported from Georgia.37 British East Africa has joined India as a substantial supplier of our imported kyanite, but that from India continues to hold preference.85 During World War II, prices of both domestic and foreign grades reached peaks unparalleled since the earliest years of the use of kyanite and as yet have shown no tendency to return to prewar levels. Topaz, by virtue of the deposit outlined in South Carolina, merits inclusion in the group.20,36,95 Large andalusite deposits, which threaten to rival our one large domestic occurrence, have been found in Russia.69,88 Sillimanite has not yet attained an important position among these useful minerals because of the lack of accessible deposits of high-quality material in adequate supply.37,50,58 Tests by the Bureau of Mines have indicated the possibilities of economically beneficiating low-grade sillimanite and kyanite.105.106,140 Government, university, and industrial

AN apparatus and procedure for the determination by X-ray reflection of preferred orientation of crystals in rolled metal with the Geiger counter X-ray spectrometer was described by Schulz.' This is an excellent procedure and we have used it continually for several years. In our use of the procedure, two modifications have been made and used during most of this period. One of these provides for automatic scanning and recording of the reflections, and the other makes possible the application of the procedure to coarse-grained specimens and permits measurement of almost all orientations without resort to the transmission technique. The automatic scanning and recording are accomplished by a motor drive of the inner ring of the Schulz apparatus (see R, in Fig. 2 of his paper and R2 in Fig. 1 of this note) in synchronism with the chart recorder of the North American Philips 90" X-ray spectrometer. A rate of 10" per min is used. A scan of 180" is obtained corresponding to poles on the stereographic projection whose locus is a great circle. The modification for coarse-grained material is accomplished by allowing a larger area of the specimen to contribute to the X-ray diffraction. In the Schulz apparatus the incident X-ray beam is confined by a slit system to rays in the plane of the spectrometer. Schulz demonstrated that this restriction of the X-ray beam permits a survey of the X-ray reflections without correction up to about 80" on either side of that specimen position in which the specimen is perpendicular to the plane of the spectrometer. This is the angle + of rotation of the inner ring R2. One of these slits is horizontal and extends across the X-ray source side of the specimen. In the modification this slit is removed, thus permitting greater divergence in the X-ray beam and the irradiation of a larger area of the specimen surface. Fig. 1 shows the apparatus with the motor drive and with the slit removed. Discontinuities in the recorded X-ray intensity plot due to the few participating crystals in coarse-grained metal are much lessened. The increased divergence does not cause reflections from other crystal planes to enter the Geiger counter slit. An important advantage of the original Schulz scheme is thus lost and a system for correction is required. To do this, a compact of atomized copper powder was prepared and tested by the original Schulz method for the absence of preferred orientation. The horizontal slit was then removed and a curve recorded showing the variation of intensity with angle +. In our arrangement the intensity was uniform within the range + equals ±30°. Beyond this the intensity fell off rapidly reaching zero at ±90°. The curve thus produced is then used to correct measurements made on preferred orientation specimens. In practice this is accomplished by constructing from this calibration curve a family of curves which, as a transparency, can be superimposed on the recorder chart to read corrected intensity directly. Not only does this method permit the handling of coarse-grained material but it also makes possible the plotting of intensities almost to the circumference of the stereographic pole figure projection. Thus, nearly the entire pole figure can be plotted without the necessity of using the transmission technique. Moreover, intensities are much greater, an advantage when surveying crystal planes of poor reflecting power.

The application of wet cleaning processes for the beneficiation of bituminous coal has created in some localities a problem in the recovery and disposal of fine solids in the washery water. The maximum allowable concentration of these solids in the washery circuit that is consistent with satisfactory operation of the cleaning units remains a controversial point. It has, however, been generally recognized for a number of years that some degree of control should be exerted over the concentration of such material. Early methods of control involved intermittent or continuous discharge of a portion of the plant slurry into near-by streams or settling ponds, and this persisted even after the adoption of settling tanks or cones. The practice is not always economical, for two reasons: first, because of the waste of coal, and, second, because it is sometimes difficult and expensive to obtain an adequate supply of water. The latter condition often is aggravated by chemical treatment of the make-up water that is necessary to prevent excessive corrosion of plant equipment. The modern approach to this problem has been the adoption of continuous thickening devices. However, because such equipment occupies considerable plant space and is somewhat expensive to construct, the practice of loading these thickeners beyond their rated capacity is widespread, therefore often the performance of such units is not altogether satisfactory. In recent years, European washeries have increased the rate of settling of the fine coal from the slurry by the addition of specially prepared starch solutions. These reagents cause flocculation of the solid particles and thereby increase the rate of sedimentation. The first important work on the flocculation and clarification of coal slurry was done by Henry, who developed the Henry process and used it successfully in Belgian preparation plants. A simple correlation is presented for the prediction of saturation pressures in condensate-gas and volatile-oil mixtures. Saturation pressure is related directly to the composition of the mixture with the aid of two generalized composition characteristics, B, the molal average boiling point, and W, the modified weight average equivalent molecular weight. The need for hydrocarbon equilibrium constants is entirely eliminated. Only the values of the two conlposition parameters need be obtained, and these are calculated in a simple and reproducible manner from the stream analysis of the mixture and the ASTM distillation for the heavy ends. The correlation is given .in the form of a set of 14 working charts in which saturation pressures, either retrograde dew points or bubble points, are plotted cs temperature, forming partial phase envelopes for mixtures having discrete values of the composition parameters, B and Wul. A locus of critical states on each chart intersects the partial phase envelopes, distinguishing retrograde dew point pressures from bubble pressures. A comparison Between experimental and predicted saturation pressures reveals that: the probable error of the predicted values, when considering the data as a whole (214 experimental points), is five per cent; for high gasjoil ratio condensate fluids (approximately 40.000 or more cu ft/bbl) the probable error is about 8 per cent. In either case, however, the probable error is comparable with the overall uncertainty of the data from which the correlation is derived. INTRODUCTION There is a present need for a simplified, yet reasonably accurate method for predicting upper phase boundaries of reservoir fluids. In the case of high gas/oil ratio fluids, namely the so-called highly volatile oils and the condensate gases, no simple method, accurate within 5 to 10 per cent, is now available by which bubble point and retrograde dew point pressures may be predicted. In order to calculate the upper phase boundary of a volatile reservoir fluid, using correlations now available, it is necessary to find and employ the proper K-values (equilibrium volatility ratios of the hydrocarbons in that fluid). This process of finding the Proper K-values usually involves a double trial and error computation. Since the K-values are in themselves dependent upon the composition of the fluid, their use in the calculation of a saturation pressure actually represents an unnecessary complication. The correlation described in this paper relates saturation pressure directly to the stream composition, entirely eliminating the need for K-values. The only data required to calculate the Stream composition are obtained from the customary low temperature fractional analyses of separator gas and liquidt and from the ASTM distillation of the c,+ fraction of the separator liquid. A considerable simplification in the procedure for predicting saturation pressures is thereby effected without significant loss in accuracy. BASIS FOR A CORRELATION Empirical relationships between the saturation pressure and the composition of the fluid in question have already been partially explored by one of the authors.V n particular, a relationship between the critical pressure for a hydrocarbon mixture and its composition was developed. The critical pressure is in reality a saturation pressure, as it repregents a limiting case either of a dew point or of a buhhle point pressure for any given mixture. It was found that the critical pressure may be correlated as a function of two generalized composition characteristics or variables. THE Fremont test for measuring the energy consumed in breaking a notched bar of steel is not so well known in this country as it deserves to be. The test specimen used in this test is about 3/8 by 1/4 by about 1 1/4 in., notched with a hack saw on the lower side to cause the piece to break at a fixed point. A weight of 10 kg. falling 4 m., and provided with a knife or chisel which strikes the specimen, breaks the test piece by impact. The residual force in the falling weight after it has broken the specimen is recorded by a suitable device, and the difference between the total energy and the residual energy of the weight (in kilogrammeters) is the force consumed in breaking the specimen. An experience of several years with the Fremont testing machine has shown its great value in readily detecting brittleness not revealed by tensile testing or slow bending testing. I this paper it is proposed to discuss (1) the supersensitiveness of the test as applied to cast steel and (2) its value in revealing the effect of heat treatment under certain conditions. .

The disturbing erect of this mineral upon the magnettic needle in land surveying must have been very early observed. The difficulties arising from this source are still almost insurmountable in making accurate surveys in districts where this ore occurs to any extent, either as a rock

The Library of the above-named Societies is open frond 9 A.M. to 10 P.M., except on holidays. It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90,000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated front sources of information. To these the Library, through Its Library Service Bureau, can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining neaps, and to furnish general information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should he made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be, sent more promptly and in more usable shape.

"The pumping of the underground water of the Butte mines is largely done from two central plants of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. The mines of one part of the mining district are served by a modern and mechanically efficient underground plant at the High Ore mine, and the remaining part by a similar one at the Leonard mine. Properties not affiliated with the A. C. M. Co. have separate pumping plants, although in several instances that company handles the water of outside companies, under which arrangement costly single plants are dispensed with. An extensive system of underground crosscuts and drifts connects these mines to both the main pumping plants, so that either may receive the water from all the mines in case there should be a failure in the other to perform its designed service.Quintuple) vertical electric pumps, 7 inches by 12 inches each, of a capacity of 600 gals. per minute under a head of 1,203 feet, are installed at both the plants. Each pump is direct connected to two 150 h-p. motors using 2,300 volts, the motors being on top of the pumps.At the High Ore plant the power cable of 400,000 c. m. is placed in a nearby shaft, the cable at present being hung from the surface to the 2,200 level. From this cable feeders of 300,000 c. m. are laid in connecting crosscuts to the pumping station at the High Ore shaft.The Leonard motors use 440 volts. The practice of building the pumps with the motors on top requires stations with high roofs, but permits the operation of the pumps if they should be submerged by an unusual flow of water."

This report deals with a study of the effects of extreme hydrostatic pressure on a polycrystalline material which exhibits a high degree of elastic anisotropy. Metallographically prepared polycrystalline bismuth samples were subjected to pressure levels up to 20,000 atm in a piston type gas-liquid system. The observed structural changes consisted of deformation localized along the grain boundaries, which appears to be a boundary migration phenomena, and widespread slip and cross slip. Subsequent deformation is progressive with increased pressure, and is substantially different in type from the deformation characteristic of uniaxial compression. A large amount of interest has been shown in recent years in the effects of extreme pressure on metals. In this connection, many investigations into the effects of pressure on physical and mechanical properties and reactions have been undertaken. Due primarily to the experimental difficulties involved, there has not been a great deal of study of the structural changes resulting from exposure of metals to extreme pressure. It has been difficult, for instance, to produce a true hydrostatic stress state in many of the extreme pressure devices used, and also to directly examine specimens metallographically before and after pressurization. The results of a preliminary investigation into one of the effects of extreme pressure, and its associated true hydrostatic stress state, on the structure of metals are discussed herein. Metals exhibit varied degrees of anisotropy in their physical and mechanical properties. Significant among the anisotropic properties is the modulus of elasticity, which varies by a factor of as much as three in some of the fcc metals, and by much larger factors in some of the less symmetrical elements. As a result of the variation of the modulus of elasticity with crystallographic direction, shear stresses will be induced in polycrystalline samples under true hydrostatic compression. Depending on several factors, these shear stresses could become of suffi- cient magnitude to cause localized plastic deformation. Presented herein are some of the structural changes observed in polycrystalline bismuth as a result of exposure to hydrostatic pressures of up to 20,000 atm. Although several other materials in both bicrystal and polycrystalline form are also currently under investigation, bismuth was chosen initially, due to its low symmetry and moderately high degree of anisotropy in the elastic properties. The fact that extreme hydrostatic pressure can induce structural changes in some elements in the polycrystalline state is of importance in itself. However, it may also be a factor in many of the other extreme pressure effects. For instance, this localized plastic deformation could substantially lower the recrystallization temperature, thus altering the effects of extreme pressure on this phenomenon. Also, as commented on by ridgman,' the hysteresis in the polymorphic transition of polycrystalline bismuth under extreme pressures could possibly be attributed to structural changes brought about by unequal compressibility. Therefore, to accurately determine the true effects of extreme pressure on metallic substances, one first must determine if any structural changes due to hydrostatic compression are also simultaneously occurring. The purpose of this work has been to determine whether the shear stresses induced by hydrostatic pressure in an anisotropic polycrystalline material, such as bismuth, could reach a magnitude great enough to cause plastic deformation and to study the resultant structural changes and effects. THEORY In a metallic crystal, the elastic properties are dependent upon the crystallographic direction and plane. Depending upon the degree of anisotropy of the elastic properties and other factors, internal shear stresses of sufficient magnitude to cause localized plastic deformation may be induced in polycrystalline material by true hydrostatic compression. The following highly simplified two-dimensional model of two adjacent grains in a polycrystalline aggregate under hydrostatic pressure serves to schematically demonstrate how these shear stresses arise in an anisotropic material.

Many experimental and theoretical investigations have been made on the processes involved in annealing and recrystallization of metals. Most of these, however, have treated the time element as constant and heat-treatments used have been for relatively short times. Aside from the early work by Carpenter and Elam,' the few that have investigated the effect of time on the processes have usually done so for fairly short time periods. During recent years the growing interest in long-time creep properties of metals and alloys under stress has made increasingly important a better knowledge of the recrystallization during prolonged heating. The recrystallization temperature of 70-30 brass given by Clark and White" in 1932 was somewhat above 400°F. (204°C.) but under 500" (260°C.), whereas in our laboratory recrystallization has been observed in creep specimens at 204°C., the lowest temperature of Clark and White's range. Since the creep properties are quite different above and below the recrystallization temperature, erroneous conclusions can readily be drawn by the application of short-time recrystallization data to creep problems. It was thus considered of both practical and theoretical value to make long-time annealing studies near the minimum recrystallization temperature. In this way useful additions could be made to data on recrystallization temperatures and, since the reactions in this range are relatively slow, additional insight could be obtained into the factors involved in annealing. Several comprehensive reviews of recrystallization processes have been written,3-6 therefore only a brief review of the generally accepted facts will be given here. Though the effects of heat-treatment usually are expressed as related to observations with varying temperatures, it is logical to assume that the same order of occurrence will exist with time as a variable. As legislation to minimize pollution in effluent streams becomes stricter, it is important to treat used acid pickling baths before discharge. This is usually achieved by neutralization of the acids and precipitation of the dissolved metals in such a way that neither acids nor metals can be re-used. A process has been designed and tested on a pilot plant scale to recover both acids and metals from a stainless steel pickling bath leaving only Na2SOs in the effluent. In this process, H2SOr is added to the spent pickling liquor and the recovery of the pickling acids HN03 and HF is achieved by solvent extraction, using TBP in kerosene as the organic solvent. The extracted acids are stripped with water, giving an acid concentration high enough for direct use in the pickling bath. Molybdenum is also extracted by TBP and is recovered in a separate step. The other metals, Fe, Cr and Ni, are precipitated from the raffinate as hydroxides, dried and recycled to the metal process. In evaluating this process, comparative experiments with mixer-settler and pulsed column have been performed. The process described is being considered for use by a Swedish company pickling 70,000 tons per annum of stainless steel.
