This is in part a review paper, indicating the various steps that have been taken in developing hindered-settling apparatus, some of the standard data that have been obtained, and some of the conclusions one is led to as to the effect of it in improving concentrating-methods and machinery, and in part it brings in some unpublished work. Causes oF Loss in ORe-ConcEntration. In making a study of the separation of valuable minerals from the waste gangue, particularly by water concentrators, it is necessary to define, first of all, what are the causes of loss that are likely to interfere with the concentration. Having made this definition, we can then study to see in what may the machines make their losses, and plan remedies for them in an intelligent way. Losses may be stated to occur as included grains, as flat or long grains, as fine free mineral, and as absolute slime. We will take these up one by one, as follows: Included Grains.—Fig. 1 shows by a set of diagrams how included grains may occur : first, where the heavy mineral grains attached to the quartz are of large size; secondly, where they are of small size; and thirdly, where very fine particles of heavy mineral are included in the quartz. We have to decide in regard to included grains whether they are rich enough to go direct to the furnace, or poor enough to throw away, or whether they lie between these two points and require recrush-ing as the only means of severing the values from the waste. This last case is the orlly one requiring special treatment at our hands. We will therefore consider that next.

The writer of this article has not attempted to write a technical paper; on the contrary, he has tried to express in "steel-plant English," for steel men, a viewpoint drawn from his practice and experience. It is not his thought that it shall be taken as the "last word" in the making of this class of steel, or that good rimming steel cannot be made by any other practice. The paper was written to serve as the basis of a discussion from which it is hoped much benefit may be derived. The paper deals only with rimming steel made by the open-hearth process, and with the lower carbon steels, such as sheet and tin bar, rivet stock, skelp, etc., although good rimming steel as high as 40 to 50 carbon can be made by having good open slags and giving proper attention to working and tapping temperatures. Definition of Rimmed Steel Rimmed steel is sometimes called open or effervescing steel to differentiate it from killed or partly killed steel. It is steel made by a process which permits the free escape of gases from the metal in the molds. In passing up through the metal, the gases keep it in a rolling action from the walls of the mold inward. The top of the ingot rims in as the metal chills and the walls of the ingot get thicker, the center part remaining fluid until it reaches a pasty condition when it is covered with a cast-iron cap. The Charge In making up a charge for rimming steel, clean stock of a known composition must be selected, special attention being given to the analysis of the materials. The silicon in good rimming steel must be eliminated to a trace, therefore it is advisable to have a uniform amount going into the charge. Too much silicon gives a raw melting heat from which rimming steel is unlikely to result. For this reason a charge containing not to exceed 40 per cent. pig iron and 60 per cent. scrap, with no iron ore, is preferred to the Monell type of charge in which as high as 65 to 70 per cent. pig iron is used with a proportional amount of iron ore for the removal of the excess silicon and carbon. THERE has been much progress in the last two decades in understanding the hardenability of steel. Roughly, the progress has been along two lines, which may be designated as empirical and fundamental. This empirical work has progressed to the point where steels may be manufactured to the desired characteristics quite closely and heat-treatment and application problems can be approached with considerable confidence. Particularly noteworthy among the empirical work is that of Grossmann,12 who has given formulas for calculating hardenability as a function of composition, and the establishment of the isothermal transformation curve by Davenport and Bain.13 The latter does not fall entirely in the class of an empirical study, for while it provides a means of presenting a tremendous amount of empirical data in the form of a single curve, it also outlines clearly the problems that face the fundamental investigator. The isothermal transformation curve shows clearly that the phenomena occurring in the neighborhood of the knee of the curve are those that limit the hardenability of steel. Above the knee of the curve, the product of decomposition of austenite is lamellar pearlite and fundamental progress has consisted chiefly of a detailed study of structure and formation of pearlite, largely at the hands of Mehl and his collaborators.1-5 They have shown that formation of pearlite proceeds by a process of nucleation and growth and they measured both the nucleation and growth rate. However, there is still a wide gap between our empirical knowledge and fundamental knowledge, owing largely to the fact that there is no satisfactory theory of nucleation rate or of growth rate. This paper is being written in an attempt to fill in a small part of the gap. A method was presented recently14 for calculating the velocity of edgewise growth of pearlite using an expression for the carbon concentration that satisfies the diffusion equation. The edgewise velocity of pearlite growth in a plain carbon eutectoid steel was calculated, using linear extrapolations of the ferrite and cementite solubilities. While the results are in fairly good agreement with the experimental facts, the calculated velocity of edgewise growth is smaller at 600°C. than G, the radial growth velocity of pearlite nodules, whereas one would expect it to be larger. In this paper the calculation will be repeated using a new extrapolation for the ferrite solubility, which gives better agreement between G and V, the calculated velocity of edgewise growth. A calculation will also be made of the effect of carbon content on velocity of edgewise growth, and the problems of calculating the effects of other alloying elements on growth rates will be discussed. Theory, operational characteristics, and indicated precision and accuracy of analytical methods based on vacuum extraction, equilibrium pressure, and combustion approaches are reviewed. At the present time vacuum extraction at 1400°C and the equilibrium pressure method are recommended for determination of hydrogen in titanium and titanium-rich alloys. UNTIL a few years ago the role of hydrogen in titanium was an unknown factor with regard to its effect on the physical and mechanical properties of the metal. However, following the work of Jaffee and othersa-" it is now generally acknowledged that hydrogen has a degrading effect on titanium and its alloys. The chief manifestations are a decrease in impact strength in -systems and delayed cracking in a-ß systems. Since hydrogen does have a de- grading effect on titanium it is essential to control it within tolerable limits. It then follows that procedures for quantitative estimation of hydrogen are a primary requirement for the industry. For greatest benefit these methods should be simple, rapid, and precise. In addition to having these virtues, methods must be easy to duplicate in both equipment and technique to gain widespread use. After inherent accuracy has been established, the, required precision to make a method acceptable is dependent largely on the nature of the work at hand. The U. S. Geological Survey has been actively engaged in work on coal for more than 50 years. During this long period we have released more than 300 publications containing information about coal and coal reserves, including details on the thickness, distribution, and quality of coal, and the structure and stratigraphy of the coal-bearing rocks. We have also cooperated with state surveys on many similar publications. For many areas these reports are the only reliable published data on our resources of coal. During the last several years we have substantially increased our activities above the wartime low. We now have field work in progress, or reports in preparation, on 13 detailed mapping projects distributed as follows: 1. Pennsylvania anthracite field 2. Casselman Basin, Md. 3. Leslie County, Ky. 4. Deep River field, N. C. 5. Coosa field, Ala. 6. Powder River field, Mont. 7. Spotted Horse field, Wyo. 8. Yampa field, Colo. 9. Paonia field, Colo. 10. Trinidad field, Colo. 11. Durango field, Colo. 12. Chaco River area, N. M. 13. Lewis and Thurston County fields, Wash. For two of these areas; the Paonia field, Colo., and the Coosa field, Ala., we have published recently preliminary reports, and final reports are in preparation. In addition, we are nearing completion of a coal reserve study of Montana, and are beginning similar studies in several other states, as part of a program of revising our estimate of national coal resources on the basis of presently available data. Factors Involved in Making Estimates Our responsibilities include detailed field mapping to secure information on areas of outcrop of coal beds, their range in thickness, nature of roof rock, amount of overburden, correlation of the beds, stratigraphy and structure of the coal-bearing rocks, and the preparation of coal reserve figures based on these data. The computation and estimation of resources of coal in the ground, like that of resources of other mineral commodities, involves consideration of many additional purely geological factors that can be appraised best through such regional studies. Regional variations in the thickness and texture of rocks overlying and underlying coal beds, for example, give evidence as to the probable position of the edges of the basin of coal deposition, or may aid in the delineation of sand-filled channels that sometimes cut out coal beds. It is apparent that the detailed field studies, in which data are gathered, are the basis for coal reserve studies, and in our present program these two phases of work are being carried on together. IN the year 1874, when the price of pig-iron was still high, that staple product became the subject of discussion in the newspapers and among those philosophers who are determined to know the "reason why" for all things. The object of the inquiry was to find out why iron did not fall in price as much as some other things had fallen. Indeed, there seemed to be an impression that iron and gold ought to move on nearly parallel lines, for the fact was constantly brought forward that iron then cost twice as much as it did before the war, though gold had returned to within twelve or fifteen per cent. of its former value. After some time the papers, by what seemed to be nearly unanimous consent, reached the conclusion that the maintenance of high prices was the work of the furnace proprietors, who, as the result of their shrewdness, were pocketing enormous profits. No proof was given to support this opinion, and the figures of cost and sale that were produced were of the most general kind, and used in the most vague manner. Visiting the president of the Thomas Iron Company, whose great works at Hokendaqua and Catasauqua, in Pennsylvania, are so well known as the largest and among the best conducted in America, I found him quite willing to meet the vague suspicions of the newspaper wiseacres, by a publication of the figures contained in the furnace-books of his company. These were accordingly given to the world through the Engineering and Mining Journal, and attracted the general attention they so well deserve. Though my own name became connected with these statistics, from the fact that I used them as the basis for the first attempt ever made to calculate the furnace economy of an American works, I can, without the suspicion of egotism, say that the statistics referred to are the most valuable contribution the literature of American blast-furnace work has yet received, for their interest is independent of personal considerations, and due entirely to the fact that they represent faithfully the details of practice in one of the most prominent American works. They are an exact transcript of the furnace-books, and form a body of accurate information of the greatest value to the metallurgical student. Their importance is shown by the fact that though the theoretical conclusions which I based upon them have been several times attacked, not one of my critics has made the slightest contribution to

Complex underground mining problems are increasing as mining depths increase. Many of these problems have been solved mainly by unsystematized trial-and-error methods based on individual experiences. This system of solving mining problems has resulted in over-cautiousness whereby a large quantity of our mineral resources are left in the ground, or not enough caution with a resultant failure of the underground opening. From studies made of physical properties of rocks, large volumes of data have been collected as a source of finding correlation among the different physical tests or among certain rock types. Most of these studies have not produced satisfactory results because the investigator usually arrives at the conclusion that the results are too scattered to be reliable. The reasons usually given as the cause of this scatter are that rocks are nonhomogenous and non-isotropic. Similar types of poor correlation that were being obtained from compression tests in the Colorado School of Mines Mining Research Laboratory led to an investigation of a good method of making a simple unidirectional compressive strength test.

There is a wide difference of opinion among rifle experts in the matter of barrel steel, and the relative importance to the life of the barrel of the steel's composition, heat treatment, structure, and physical properties. In order to promote discussion, which it is hoped may' lead to the discovery of the source of some of the traditional beliefs on the subject, the results of some tests are presented here, with data on heat treating, physical tests, and erosion. The detailed metallographic study of this steel is given in another paper.l The conclusions from these tests should be capable of wider application than their direct bearing on the barrel-steel problem. The Government specifications for barrel steel for model 1903 rifle (Springfield) call for carbon 0.50 to 0.60 per cent., manganese 1.00 to 1.29 per cent., silicon under 0.25 per cent., sulfur under 0.06 per cent., phosphorus under 0.08 per cent. The minimum physical requirements are: Tensile strength, 110,000 lb. per sq. in. (7733 kg. per sq. cm.); yield point, 75,000 lb. per sq. in (5472 kg. per sq. cm.); elongation, 20 per cent.; reduction of area, 45 per cent. Material fulfilling these requirements gives practically no failures when proof-fired, with charge of 70,000 lb. per sq. in. pressure, which is 40 per cent. in excess of the service charge. The turning and drilling operations show up any seams or laps such as accidentally occur even in the best heats of open-hearth steel, so that faulty stock is practically all eliminated before proof-firing. These physical requirements are met either by rolling billets at a proper temperature down to the form of tapered barrel blanks or by heat treating bars that have been upset to cnlarge the breech section. The transformation temperature of this steel, on heating, is around 1350" F. (732' C.), varying somewhat with the composition and the rate of heating. The actual treatment of the barrel blanks, as carried out by different manufacturers, gives four kinds of barrels, which will be called A, B, C, and D, for convenience. Nationalization of the coal mining industry in Great Britain was one of the first pieces of major legislation enacted by the post-war Labor Government in 1964. It followed a long period of economic depression with high unemployment and bad industrial relations in the coal mining industry during the 1930's, and shortages of coal during the last war. Upon nationalization, the National Coal Board took over control of the industry in 1947 and so became the biggest single employer of labor in the western world. As well as the coal mines themselves, it assumed responsibility for a great variety of other assets including coke ovens, byproduct plants, land, houses, railways and shipping wharves.

The marketing of nonferrous metals and of the ores and concentrates from which these metals are recovered is a fascinating trade, international in character, sensitive to every change in the economic tide, and complex in its organization. Each individual metal has its own marketing mechanism; no two are exactly alike. The differences sometimes are a matter of tradition rather than of necessity, but usually they have developed because of the very nature of the problems of producing or consuming the individual metal. This description, because of limitations of space, can do no more than indicate the major aspects of the trade and touch lightly on the marketing structure of each metal. The dictionary states that a market is a "meeting of people for selling and buying." In the case of nonferrous metals this meeting may occur on a half-dozen different occasions between the time the ore has been first mined and the time the refined metal is available for use by industry; or it may not occur at all until after the metal itself has been rolled, drawn, stamped, cast, or forged into a useful semifabricated shape. To illustrate: A Chilean miner may sell his small ore production to a custom mill, which produces concentrates that are sold to an ore dealer, who finances shipments of the concentrate to a custom smelter, which buys them for conversion into blister, to be subsequently refined into electrolytic copper (sometimes by a refinery having no corporate ties with the custom smelter) and sold. Conversely, aluminum production is mostly by integrated concerns that mine bauxite, convert it to alumina, smelt that to produce aluminum, and then fabricate that into semifinished or even finished products before title to the material changes hands for the first time. Some nonferrous ores are not converted into metal at all but are sold by the miners or dealers directly to the ultimate consumers. A good example would be chrome ores used by the chemical industry. And of course a substantial part of the commerce in nonferrous metals is in scrap, which is the reconversion into useful form of metals that have long since been mined and smelted. THE investigations of Crussard,' of Guinier and Tennevin,' and of Dunn and Daniels," indicate that the subgrains formed in a cold worked and annealed metal are capable of growing at each other's expense during annealing, if the temperature of annealing is sufficiently high and the time is long enough. The results of Dunn and Daniels are particularly convincing in showing that subgrain growth is essentially the result of the free surface energy associated with the subboundaries. In subgrain growth, as in ordinary grain growth, energy is gained as a result of the decrease in total subboundary surface area per unit volume. Recently, Wood and Scrutton4 found that the rate of subgrain growth upon annealing increased very considerably, if simultaneously a creep strain was applied to the specimen at a low strain rate. Working with 99.98 pct pure fine-grained aluminum, these investigators found that the continuous X-ray diffraction back-reflection rings of material strained at room temperature remained continuous after heating for ten days at 250 °C. However, when heated at the same temperature under a stress of 1000 psi even for only three days, the formerly continuous X-ray diffraction rings broke up into numerous dots, which were fairly clearly separated from each other. The continuous X-ray diffraction rings were interpreted as indications of a very small subgrain size, not resolved by the X-ray diffraction method used. The breaking up of the continuous X-ray diffraction ring during annealing under stress was taken as an indication of a great increase in subgrain size, so that the individual subgrains could then be resolved. The effect of simultaneous strain at a low strain rate in accelerating subgrain growth, discovered by Wood and Scrutton and designated by them as "cell growth," is of fundamental importance. The experiments described in this note were carried out in order to confirm Wood and Scrutton's results by direct metallographic observation. Also, information was sought as to the minimum creep strain necessary to produce this effect. A fine grained high purity aluminum strip was prepared by alternate 33 pct rolling and annealing treatments for 1 hr at 350°C. Specimens cut from this strip were subjected to a relatively fast creep strain of 7.2 pct in 3.5 min at 300°C under a constant load initially corresponding to 1185 psi. The subgrains set up were large enough (about 0.015 to 0.03 mm) to be clearly observed (Fig. 1) at X200 magnification with polarized light, after electrolytic polishing and anodic etching, producing a fine oxide film." The corresponding X-ray diffraction pattern is shown in Fig. la. After the fast creep strain treatment a portion of the specimen was subjected to a creep strain of 8.3 pct in 44 hr at 350°C under a constant load initially corresponding to 320 psi. Another portion, annealed under the same conditions, but not strained, served as control specimen. The subgrain size of a typical area of the specimen annealed under strain and of the one annealed without strain is shown in Figs. 2 and 3 (X-ray diffraction patterns, Figs. 2a and 3a). Annealing without strain produced clearly observable subgrain growth (subgrain size: about 0.03 to 0.05 mm). The effect of simultaneous strain was to increase greatly the rate of subgrain growth (resulting in a subgrain size of approximately 0.05 to 0.13 mm), in accordance with Wood and Scrutton. In another experiment, the effect of the amount of simultaneous strain was studied. The initial subgrain structure was set up by fast creep, as described previously. The specimen was then heated at 350 °C under a constant load initially corresponding to 320 psi, as above, for 2.2 hr (0.24 pct strain), and 8.8 hr (0.58 pct strain). Comparison with the corresponding unstrained control specimens by means of X-ray diffraction showed that 0.58 pct strain definitely had an effect, but the effect of 0.24 pct strain was doubtful.

The annual Jackling Award Lecture, sponsored by the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME, is intended to honor and commemorate one of the greatest mine-makers of all time, an innovator whose vision and determination made ore out of waste rock. He ushered in a new philosophy of mining which revolutionized some segments of the industry and notably affected our economy generally. To have been asked to given the Jackling Lecture this year is an honor that I scarcely deserve, but which I have accepted in humble gratitude. Although it is true that "many a mine has made the man," it is also true that while ore bodies are found, mines are made. That statement has been hammered into my skull many times by a man whose own career exemplifies its truth, a man who has been first and last a steadfast friend, who for a while was my boss and mentor, and who as one of this country's great mining geologists has laid his hand to the making of many a mine. I will doubly cherish the memory of the honor bestowed upon me because the presentation of the Jackling Award was made by this man. After the Lord made Dick Hunt he threw away the mold. Metals and other mineral products are essential ingredients of the social economy of the modern world. No well informed and thoughtful person can doubt that they will be indispensable to mankind as long as the fabric of civilization as we know it today can be held together. They are mined from ore bodies, which, unlike some other kinds of bodies, are physically inorganic and wholly incapable of reproducing themselves. Since in time they become mined out, an endless procession of new producers must be made by someone if the fundamental needs, to say nothing of the not so fundamental whims of an affluent society, are to be gratified. In saying that these mines must be made, I mean exactly that. It is my purpose to comment upon some of the problems we must cope with in making them. I shall try to avoid dwelling needlessly upon aspects of new mine development with which most people in this business are thoroughly familiar, and will attempt to discuss in a useful way some of the newer and more significant features of the economic climate in which these endeavors must be conducted. To begin with, an Almighty force put the ore into the ground, and selected the places in which to put it. Mankind was not consulted. Beyond that stage, however, mankind must find the ore deposits and contrive to extract their contents and put them into useful service. In doing this, he must use tools and techniques devised by man to overcome obstacles created in part by nature, but also in part by man himself. And most importantly of all, in making the tools and applying the techniques, he must use people. In the whole process the most pliable ingredient at hand-and also the most unpredictable-is people. Mines play out, and men die. As time goes on, we will have new mines, and they must be made by new men. The Environmental Dilemma It is perhaps timely to touch first upon the newest and in many ways the most potent consideration affecting the feasibility of developing new mines-the problems related to protection of the environment and to the

During the past 20 years. research and development in the study of reservoir behavior have dealt principally with flow of oil through sandstones. Many reservoir studies of sand fields have proved valuable in promoting recovery efficiency. This paper discusses fundamental principles governing oil and gas production from sandstone and limestone alike and presents the results of investigations relating to the application of analytical techniques used for sandstone reservoir studies to the study of limestone reservoir performance. The characteristics of limestone porous systems, porosity-permeability relationships, distribution and occurrence of oil, and characteristics of flow through such systems are discussed. Recognition is made of the similarities or differences which these factors exhibit in limestone and sandstone systems. Comparisons between operating data for typical limestone and sand reservoirs are presented. It is indicated that the distribution and movement of fluids in and through porous limestones follow the same fundamental principles underlying such processes in sandstones. This fundamental similarity may readily be discernible in the performance of many limestone reservoirs. The volumetric balance and unsteady state radial flow equation, the fluid displacement equation, use of electrical analogue devices, and other analytical techniques to study the behavior of limestone fields appear fundamentally applicable, but do require thorough understanding of the properties of the formation, of the fluids, their behavior during flow, and adequate production operating data. Need for more complete coring and comprehensive examination of core properties is stressed. The results of "active oil" studies, and of flow and interference tests are presented. Well spacing, well completion, and efficient rates of production in limestone reservoirs are briefly discussed. INTRODUCTION Limestone and dolomite reservoirs constitute the largest source of supply of crude oil in the world. an estimated 60 per cent of present production coming from carbonate reservoirs. In many large geologic provinces such as Mexico. the Middle East, and more recently Canada, almost all the oil is found in this type of rock. In the United States, all of the major oil-producing areas except California and Pennsylvania contain oil-bearing carbonate formations. The discovery in recent years of large oil reserves in the Silurian, Devonian, and Ordo-vician formations in West Texas, in addition to the large reserves in the Permian, has accentuated the interest of operators, geologists, and engineers in limestone formations and in the many problems associated with understanding the performance of these reservoirs. The rapid increase in discovery of oil in limestone formations and the present-day position of prominence held by these fields in the production and reserve picture in all parts of the world emphasize the horizons opened to the reservoir technologist in the field of geological and production research. Pertinent to an interpretation of the behavior of limestone reservoirs are the methods of analysis which may be utilized and a possession of full knowledge of the many factors which influence the analytical procedures. During the past 20 years a well-developed science of reservoir engineering has been built upon the research of many workers who studied the fundamental nature of oil reservoirs, characteristics of the porous media, properties and behavior of the contained fluids, and the mechanics of flow. Application of these studies to production practice has resulted in greater recoveries and more efficient field operation. The major portion of this evolutionary process has been founded upon studies of sand fields. The applicability of these more thoroughly developed techniques for studying sand fields to the study of the behavior of limestone fields becomes a factor of technical and practical significance. In the light of the technological background available to the reservoir analyst, this paper discusses fundamental principles governing oil and gas production from sandstone and limestone alike and presents the results of investigations relating to the application of analytical techniques used for sandstone studies to the study of limestone reservoir performance. LIMESTONE RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS The characteristics of limestone and sandstone reservoirs are similar in many respects and they both may occur under similar structural conditions. Fundamentally, the distribution and movement of fluids in and through the porous limestone media follow the same basic principles which dictate such processes in sandstones. Herein lies a fundamental similarity, which may readily be discernible in the performance of many limestone reservoirs. In some limestone fields, as in many sand fields, widely varying formation properties and distribution may reveal themselves in deviations in the performance of the reservoir, in the behavior of wells, and in fluid flow through the rock, and make difficult the delineation of reservoir behavior. Only by reservoir studies, core analyses, and coordinated laboratory and field experimentation can the effects of the many influencing factors upon the nature of limestone production be determined. FORMATION CHARACTERISTICS The chief difference between limestone and sandstone, aside from their chemical compositions, is the difference in the geometry and origin of the porous systems in the two kinds of rock. Coal reserves of the Rocky Mountain area are vast and are more than adequate to meet significantly increasing demands in the immediate future. Practically all of the increase in coal demand for the next decade or so will be in the electric power utility sector. All ranks of coal are available in the area, and from a technological viewpoint, all are suitable for electric power generation. Location of economically recoverable coal deposits, location of generating plants with respect to power demand areas and sources of cooling water, and availability and price of other fuels are the major factors which, individually or in combination, will determine the ultimate selection of Western coal deposits to be developed for electric power generation. The low sulfur content of most western coals and the non-urban location of many power plants should tend to minimize problems of air pollution. If projections for nuclear power prove correct, increases in demand for Rocky Mountain area coals beyond about 1980 will depend primarily on the extent of commercial development of synthetic fuel processes. Current research activities on the conversion of coal to liquid and gaseous fuels are promising. Most western coals range in rank from lignite through high-volatile bituminous coals and are particularly amenable to conversion. Vast reserves of Rocky Mountain coals have long lain dormant primarily because of their remoteness from major market areas. Recently, however, innovations in coal transportation and electric power transmission methods, combined with unprecedented demands for electric power in the West, have resulted in large-scale development of some of these coals. In the past few years, announcements of coal mine openings and transportation plans in the Southwest have been filled with superlatives: The Navajo mine in northwest New Mexico is expected to be the largest mine in the country in the near future. The largest single coal agreement ever made provides for coal shipment from northeast Arizona to Nevada via the largest and longest coal-slurry pipeline ever used. An 1100-mile haul of coking coal from northern New Mexico to California by unit train began last year. It is the purpose of this report to evaluate the coal resources of the Rocky Mountain area, and to project their potential utilization. In projecting energy demand levels on a national basis, the Bureau of Mines has developed some rather complex techniques to cope with uncertainties. Using these same techniques, an estimate has been made of consumption of Mountain area coal in 1980. No attempt was made to estimate coal consumption beyond 1980, but new market potentials are discussed briefly. The present and potential coal-producing fields of the Rocky Mountain area are in six states comprising the Mountain Region - Arizona, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. THE Elko Prince mine is in the Gold Circle district, Nevada, about ½ miles(2. 4km.) from the town of Midas, 55 miles (88.5 km.) west of Battle Mountain and 50 miles (8.5 km.) northeast of Golconda. The district is described by Emmons in U. S. Geological Survey Bulletin 408, 1910. Little was said of the Elko Prince, however, as only a small amount of work had then been completed. The geological structure of the region is simple. The oldest exposed formation, covering most of the area, is rhyolite, which has a light-colored devitrified groundmass enclosing phenocrysts of feldspar, quartz, and magnetite. It has been somewhat weathered and partially stained with oxide of iron. There are several outcrops of andesite which cut the rhyolite. The ore deposits occur as fissure veins, replacement veins, and sheeted zones. The Elko Prince vein is of the first type. The rhyolite near the veins is silicified, stained with oxide of iron, and, at some localities, replaced by ore, or is so permeated by metals as to be classed as ore. The vein filling consists chiefly of quartz, and the values consist entirely of gold and silver. Part of the gold exists as the native metal and part is associated with pyrite. Silver occurs free and its argentite in handed streaks through the vein. These veins trend in a northwesterly direction, with dips varying from 65° to vertical.

ALL industrial establishments whose operations depend upon chemical reactions use gases. In the simplest case the oxygen of the atmosphere, heated or not, as the case may be, is used, and in other cases, gases which are produced by a special apparatus of more or less complex composition. The manufacturer depends, for the success of his operations, entirely upon having these gases arrive at the right time, in the proper proportions, at the required temperature. It often requires but a slight variation in their composition to make a given process a success or a failure. In most cases the gas used is formed from fuel, and according as variations in its composition are produced by alterations in the manner of charging the grate, not only different, but often directly opposite, results are obtained. The great industrial question of the present time, and one upon which the prosperity of the world depends, is how to get the greatest amount of useful effect from fuel, whether the caloric is used directly or is transformed into horse-power. In almost all industrial pursuits this translates itself into the question of how to construct a fireplace and its adjuncts in such a way that the heat of the flame and of the products of combustion shall be made to produce a maximum effect. Unfortunately, until very recently, except by comparison, there was no means of ascertaining whether the loss of useful effect was 80, 40, or 20 per cent. of the total amount of fuel employed. It seems now strange that there should have been furnaces so constructed as to produce 20 per cent. of carbonic acid in the fireplace, but this has been proved by analysis to have been true. It does seem incredible that, notwithstanding the immense number and variety of furnaces used for different processes, and the great difference in kind, quality, and quantity of fuels consumed, there should formerly have been used for them all, the same stereotyped fireplace, varied only in its dimensions of height, length, and breadth. It is true that, with a good fireman, excellent effects may be, and have been, produced, but the manufacture is here, as in many other cases, dependent on the intelligence of the workman, a very uncertain reliance for capital to rest upon. I. An Outline of the Theory of the Sintering of Pure Metal Powders SINTERING may be defined as the process by which powders bond themselves into coherent bodies, usually, although not necessarily, under the influence of pressure and elevated temperature. For the sake of clarity and simplicity, the present survey will exclude from consideration the sintering of mixed or alloyed powders, with attendant complications, but at the risk of overlooking information of general applicability. Sintering in the presence of a liquid phase is thus automatically eliminated. The sintering of alloys involves much additional subject matter and deserves separate consideration. Since the literature of the subject is extensive and widely scattered, it will not be feasible to consider the contributions individually. Instead, the subject matter will be classified according to experimental observations and theory, and will be presented in summary form. It should be noted that the appended list of references does not constitute a complete bibliography; it includes only those works quoted below. More extensive bibliographies are included in several of the references; see particularly references 7, q, 28, 34, 38, 50, 52, 54 a "Bibliography on Powder Metallurgy" published by the Library of Congress and a pamphlet published by the Metals Disintegrating Co. entitled "The Field of Powder Metallurgy and Bibliography." II. Summary of Experimental Observations The following classified list is composed of general statements of established fact derived from the experimental results reported in the published literature. A few contested observations are included, because of their potential importance; these are labeled as such. Any satisfactory and complete theory must be capable of explaining all of the uncontested facts.
