MARCEL R. DALY (communication to the Secretary?).-The fundamental disagreement between Eugene Coste and the writer proceeds essentially from the contradictory views they hold on the origin of petroleum. This difference cannot be bridged, nor can inorganic and organic theories be discussed here. The writer has suggested that the proper thing in such a case would be to agree to disagree. Coming to the detailed objections further presented by Mr. Coste, the writer feels that, in the main, they take their source in a wrong interpretation of the theory, and the writer is sometimes too generously invested with views that are not his own. 1. The only requirement for the theory is that the oil proceeding from organic remains be distributed in a water-laden sediment, and that this sediment be submitted to the increasing compression due to the continuous accumulation of superimposed strata, which would tend to squeeze out the liquid contents (p. 1152). This squeezing out would be further aided by the distortion of the strata (p. 1148, a). Nothing here makes impossible the slow formation of the oil, if this is considered necessary, as the piling up of the strata in the syncline would require by itself a protracted length of time, and, further, the squeezing-out process is a slow one. Possibly the formation of the oil may even continue during part of the process of distortion. But the mode of formation of the oil and the time and temperature required for it are left to the chemist to decide. The diastrophic theory, which is essentially a theory of motion and accumulation dependent on the laws of mechanics, is not directly concerned with them, provided the general points heretofore outlined be agreed upon. Perhaps it would be wise not to claim too many "eons" for the formation of the hydrocarbons, if the statement made by Sir Boverton Redwood is correct that "the coral reefs of the Red Sea are charged in places with recent petroleum, formed in that torrid climate from the swarming organisms occupying the shallow pools."1

The more stringent ventilation requirements of the 1969 Act have created a greater need for improved network analyses. More air is required at the last open crosscut (9000 cfm) and for the first time a minimum quantity is specified for the face (3000 cfm). Severe restrictions are placed on both belt and track haulage, and the intake air cannot contain more than 2 mg per cu m of respirable dust, to be reduced to 1 mg later. Larger tonnage and longer life mines are the trend today, necessitating multiple fans and shafts. Yet relatively little engineering goes into designing the mine ventilation system. In this paper a ventilation system is designed for a typical Pittsburgh block system, manual calculations are made and then checked by a computer solution. The computer is the ideal tool to try out proposed changes on paper to insure that the entire mine is properly ventilated and no costly adjustments need be made by dumping air. While it is theoretically possible to solve complex ventilation network problems by hand, it is not practical to do so because of the tremendous man-hours required and the many opportunities for errors. Thus the digital computer is indispensible to the ventilation engineer and newer improved ventilation programs are being developed to more realistically model mine ventilation networks. Suggested ventilation changes to comply with the new regulations are also critically evaluated.

On Feb. 16, 1948, the Board of Directors of AIME authorized the publishing of "Technical Notes" in METALS TECHNOLOGY. The purpose is to provide prompt publication of very short items of the following general types: I. Results of short investigations which do not warrant a paper. 2. The conclusions of extensive investigations of insufficient general interest to justify a regular paper. 3. Conclusions arising in the course of an investigation, which, because of interest to others in the field, the author wishes to present prior to completion of the investigation. 4. Pertinent factual comment (not mere argument) on the subject matter of previous "Notes." Such Notes will be subject to the approval of the Auxiliary and AIME Publications Committees, but can be handled more promptly than regular papers because they need not be referred to readers. The recommended maximum length is 500 words; notes in excess of 1,000 words will not be considered for this type of publication. A graph or photograph may be included as part of the note when particularly illustrative. As with regular papers, contributions to the new section should be submitted to the Secretarv of the AIME. Please furnish two copies, each complete with illustrations.

This case study compares the actual production figures for the No. I and No. 2 copper orebodies of the Société Miniére Louvem, Val d'Or, Quebec, with the preproduction estimates and a postmortem geostatistical estimation using kriging techniques. The deposits considered are small subvertical sulphide orebodies which were mined from August 1970 to April 1973, producing 648,000 tons at 2.04% Cu versus the 1968 computed reserves of 671,000 tons at 2.51% Cu (with 20% dilution), thus showing a 25% overestimation of the copper contained. The postmortem geostatistical estimation based on the same 44 D.D.H. intersections available in 1968, shows 2.24% Cu (no dilution), compared to 3.23% Cu (no dilution) given by the conventional section method. Block by block kriging techniques were used, but within the ore contours as determined by the geologist. In this case, Characterized like many sulphide deposits by highly dispersed sample values, geostatistical kriging techniques permit a more realistic estimation of the metal contained within a given volume, than the conventional methods which overestimate it. This study has been conducted by the Mineral Exploration Research institute (IREM-MERI) for SOQUEM, and is one of the few case studies released with all pertinent data. More postmortem of this kind are required for geologists and geostatisticians to improve their methods and their "batting average".

The deposit of rock-salt which is known to exist along the eastern shore of Lake Huron, in the province of Ontario, has lately been more completely explored than before, by a boring with a diamond drill, put down by Henry Attrill, Esq., of New York City, and the results obtained are so important in every way that I make no apology for presenting them to the Institute of Mining Engineers. I may be permitted to preface an account of this remarkable exploration, and of its results, with a historical sketch of the discovery and development of this salt-region. It was in December, 1865, that a boring was begun near the town of Goderich, in the hope of finding petroleum. In this the adventurers were disappointed, but, after passing through about 800 feet of limestone, they encountered a series of variegated marls, in which, at a, depth of 964 feet from the surface, a bed of rock-salt, 30 feet in thickness, was met with in May, 1866. The boring was carried to a depth of 1010 feet, ending in hard rock, and yielded, by pumping, a very pure saturated brine when examined by me in August of the same year. In the report of the Geological Survey of Canada for 1863-66, published early in 1867, I described this salt-well, with many geological details, and gave an analysis of the brine. In the next three years a considerable number of wells was sunk in and around Goderich, and numerous trials were made in various other parts of the region. Salt was found at Kincardine, thirty miles north-northeast from Goderich, at a depth of about 900 feet, and also at Clinton, thirteen miles southeast, at 1180 feet. Records of these wells, with analyses of the brine from them, were given by myself in a subsequent report of the Geological Survey, 1866-69, published in 1870 (pp. 211-244), together with accounts of various unsuccessful borings in the neighborhood, analyses of the brines from the various wells (including one analysis by Dr. Goessmann), with many details of the salt-manufacture at Goderich, at Syracuse, New York, and at Saginaw, Michigan. We have shown in former papers the influence which aluminum exerts when added to cast-iron, and we have presented in another paper, accompanying this one, the physical properties of the metal aluminum and of some of its alloys. The present paper continues the investigation. The reader will find, in our paper on "Aluminum and Other Metals Compared,"* explanations not here repeated, which will render the diagrams in this paper intelligible. The scale of stresses is laid off on the ordinate which rises from the zero-point of the diagram. The scale of deflections is laid off on the abscissa which runs horizontally through this zero-point. By applying a given amount of stress, then running back to zero, and again applying the same stress, we describe a spring-line, in which the deflections are proportional to the stresses. Generally the deflections exceed this proportion during the original application of stress; and the excess is the permanent set. By laying off from the zero-point a line parallel to the springline, we shall generally find that this new spring-line and the diagram coincide for some distance; that is, that the test-bar is

This study outlines the history of metal mining in Japan and the characteristics of the industry as they existed from 1925 to 1945. Mining and milling operations are described together with the role of the Japanese Government. A description of post-hostilities conditions and the present state of the industry is included. MANY of Japan's larger and better known mines date back to the early centuries of the Christian Era. The first stimulus to mining in Japan came through the growth of Buddhism, A. D. 600 to 700, and the attendant need for copper and other metals for temple ornaments and statues. During the Feudal period, 1333 to 1568, mine operations were expanded to meet the demand for ornament metal and for financing of campaigns. After removal of the seat of government from Kyoto to Tokyo, about 1600, the Tokugawa Shogunate placed great emphasis on mining, and many new mines were opened, some of which are still operating. Toward the end of the Tokugawa period, mining had declined sharply from its earlier peak. The easily worked, high grade portions of the orebodies had been exhausted, and the mining techniques then available could not exploit the deeper, lower grade ores. Similarly, extraction of metal from the sulphide ores presented a major problem. With the Meiji Restoration in 1868 and the rapid opening of the country to western ideas came a rejuvenation of the mining industry. Mining, milling, and smelting processes were greatly improved, resulting in the extension of development work into hitherto inaccessible portions of orebodies. The demand for metal during World War I stimulated activity throughout the industry; copper mining, particularly, expanded to a point where Japan ranked second among world producers.* During the depression following the war, mining underwent a severe contraction in activity, recovering slowly during the late 1920's only to undergo a further setback in the worldwide depression which started in 1929. Mineral output declined in 1930, but the beginning of Japanese expansion, 1931 to 1932, brought about an increase in the output of mine products starting between 1932 to 1934. Production continued to rise, the peak output being attained 1939 to 1943 in virtually all commodities. The greatest production of iron ore, chromite, and manganese was not experienced until 1944 when blocked imports, coupled with strong demands for steel, provided the needed incentive. Through necessity, Japan produced much of her mineral needs from her own mines at high cost during World War 11. Taking the 1932 to 1936 period as an average, however, Japanese mines produced only 16 pct of the iron available to industry, 8 pct of the lead, 33 pct of the zinc, and 68 pct of the copper. Nearly all of Japan's output of gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc between 1925 and 1945 came from 30 to 49 pct of the mines for which production data are available; for example, 66 of 174 gold-silver mines accounted for 98 pct of the output of this group. Further analysis of mine output indicates that a large part of Japan's metal output was derived from a few large mines; about 10 gold-silver, 15 copper, 3 lead-zinc, 5 manganese, and 2 iron mines account for most of the production. TARNISH films on some of the common metals (particularly on copper and silver) have been of much scientific and commercial concern for a long time, but before the development of the electrical method1 of measuring film thicknesses there was no satisfactory quantitative approach by which to study the separate parts of these complex films. This method has been adapted to the measurement of duplex (cuprous-cupric) oxide films on copper .2 In the present work it has been used to measure tarnish films on copper when they were mixtures of cuprous oxide and cuprous sulphide, and also when they contained cuprous oxide, cupric oxide and cuprous sulphide, each component part being measured at a different potential value. Oxide-coated copper specimens, prepared by heating copper in air at chosen temperatures for given periods, were exposed to moist hydrogen. sulphide in air to form the various oxide-sulphide films studied. The comparative resistances afforded by (1) different thicknesses of oxide films, and also (2) equal thicknesses of oxide and sulphide films, against severe attacks of hydrogen sulphide were measured. The electrical method requires that the time be observed for the cathodic reduction of each part of the film substance, and these respective time values multiplied by the constant current give the corresponding quantities of electricity expended. Then each millicoulomb per square centimeter represents a film thickness of T= MX10 8 2D X 96,494 X 103 (a) where M is weight of oxide (or sulphide) giving one gram-atom of oxygen (or sulphur) for cathodic reduction, D is density of the oxide (or sulphide) and t is the thickness in Angström units per millicoulomb per square centimeter. The value of t for cuprous sulphide (cubical) is 14.27, and is obtained by substituting 5.78 for D and 159.20 for M in equation a. Previous values2 of t for cuprous and cupric oxides (12.36 and 6.39, respectively) were used in the present work.

The regions of New Mexico referred to are in Socorro, Grant, and Dona Ana counties, and a portion of Lincoln County, embracing in the aggregate a very large area, of most of which our knowledge is as yet very fragmentary and superficial. It is only very recently that large portions of this region have been accessible. It has been full of danger from hostile bands of wandering Apaches, whose murderous raids have slain many adventurous miners and seriously prevented developments. But this evil has now been largely abated, and in many of the mining camp of this region there is no longer any danger from this cause. SOCORRO MINES. About three and a half miles back of the old Mexican town of Socorro, on the Rio Grande, chief town of the County of Socorro, are two or more large veins of heavy spar, cutting across the fat* of Socorro Mountain in a northeast and southwest direction, and dip ping at an angle of about forty degrees into the body of the mountain. These veins are in rhyolite, and, so far as could be seen in openings on the Torrence Mine, which I examined, are without any clay parting or selvage. The average thickness of the Torrence rein may be about five feet, the thickness varying from pne or two feet to thirteen feet. It is suggested that at high temperatures both sulfur and iron combine with oxygen. Iron may precipitate at the high temperatures as the oxides of iron, and sulfur also in combination with oxygen as the low solubility sulfates of barium, strontium, calcium, and potassium (alunite). At lower temperature the precipitation results from change of sulfate sulfur to sulfide sulfur, and the iron precipitates as the sulfide.

A severely technical article, however well written, can not be an agreeable form of literature. It suffers from the defects of its qualities. One defect is a congestion of language, due to a multiplicity of adjectival nouns. The sentences are packed with words of unpleasing sound, charged with complex ideas, crowding one another so closely that the phraseology moves like an ice-pack in Bering Sea or a log-drive in a river; the undercurrent of meaning may continue to move, but the surface is obstructed. This verbal congestion is made evident by ugly compoundings, many of which are adopted by the technical writer in the mistaken belief that they give directness to his statements. DISCUSSION OF RESULTS The qualitative correlation between low-temperature ductility and prior high-temperature creep strain in nickel obtained in this investigation confirms the result obtained on high-purity brass by Chen and Machlin. However, the quantitative effect is much smaller in nickel. Comparison can be made on the basis of a prior high-temperature strain that is a certain percentage of the total high-temperature elongation to rupture. In the research of Chen and machlin, the prior high-temperature strain of 1/2 pct equaled 8.5 pct of the total high-temperature elongation at rupture. For nickel, in our experiments, 8.5 pct of 21.2 pct equals 1.8 pct. For eh = 1.8 pct, the loss in ductility in percent equals x 100 = b.5 pct. Schmatz IRON-aluminum alloys have gained much interest in the past few years for use as a base material for elevated-temperature alloys because of their excel- high-temperature strain the loss in low-temperature ductility is 8.5 pct for nickel as compared to 60 pct for pure a, brass. It is also interesting to note the observation that in nickel the low-temperature fractures, even at the most extreme high-temperature pre-strain, were partly trans crystalline and partly intercrystalline. In the case of a brass, these fractures were completely intercrystalline. According to the data on the percent of the grain boundary area that is cracked, at 22 pct high-temperature elongation, about 12.5 pct of the grain boundary area does not carry load. Thus, the inter-crack areas are carrying a stress that is about 11 pct higher than the nominal stress. A simple model predicts that the overall elongation, which is primarily the elongation in the bulk of the specimen, will correspond to the nominal stress when the stress in the intercrack area equals the tensile strength. Quantitatively this model predicts the equation The form of this equation will agree with that found if the strain-hardening exponent, n, equals unity. Actually this model is too gross an approximation to yield good quantitative results. The question naturally arises as to whether in ordinary hot-working, such as hot-rolling, intercrys-talline cracks are introduced that affect the low-temperature properties. It appears that the answer is that such a possibility cannot be overlooked, if the hot-working induces tensile stresses at temperatures above the equicohesive temperature and if the material tends to be notch sensitive at low temperature. Analytical and experimental procedures are descrihed for quantitative determination of volume-fraction microporosity in metals by mimorarlio-graphg. The analysis assumes spherical pores but allows for the observed fact that pores or portions of pores smaller than a given thickness do not project an image on the film. Volume-fraction microporosity was measuured in cast low-alloy steel and shown to vary from 0.6 x 10-4 to 10 x 10 depending on mode of solidification and on whether the material was air- or vacuum-cast. The aim of work described herein was to develop a method of quantitative measurement of the volume fraction of microporosity in cast metals. Microporosity, present in nearly all castings and ingots, is always interdendritic in nature and may be large enough to be seen on a polished surface with the naked eye. More generally, it is smaller in size, and its detection more difficult. Three techniques might be considered for measurement of microporosity: 1) lineal analysis of a polished metallographic surface, 2) density measurement, or 3) quantitative microradiography. As will be shown later, volume fractions of porosity in directionally solidified castings may be the order of 10-4 to 10-3; such small amounts of porosity are difficult to identify and measure on a polished surface. Density measurement is also not a suitable technique (for alloys) when the volume fraction of porosity is low. This is because the density of the base metal is often not known within the necessary accuracy, due to microsegregation or partial phase transformations. In general, it is not possible to completely eliminate microsegregation without also altering the porosity. Because of the limitations of the foregoing techniques, quantitative microradiography was employed to determine amount of porosity. In recent work, microradiography has been found to be useful for qualitative measurement of porosity, including determination of size and shape of individual pores;&apos;)&apos; however, quantitative determination of amount of porosity has not been attempted. I) CALCULATION OF VOLUME-FRACTION POROSITY The following analysis employs procedures similar to those of Cahn and Nutting3 and Hilliard.4 Major simplifications are that pores are assumed to be spherical and to be present in sufficiently small quantities that no overlapping occurs. A basic difference from the previous treatments is that the limited "sensitivity" of microradiography is considered. Assume first 1) cavities are spherical and of uniform diameter, 2) cavities are randomly distributed, 3) volume-fraction porosity and specimen thickness to pore radius ratio are sufficiently small that overlapping of the projected images of cavities is negligible, 4) sensitivity is limited (i.e., holes or portions of holes of less than a given thickness do not project an image on the film). The sensitivity, is defined as: where 5 = minimum thickness of void from which an image will be projected on the film and t = specimen thickness. Now, from Fig. 1, it is possible to distinguish between two different types of holes. These are 1) holes whose centers lie within the region t/2 > X > 6/2, where X is distance from one surface of the specimen (positive into the specimen), and 2) holes whose centers lie within the region (6 — r) < X < 6/2, Holes whose centers lie outside X = (6 -r) project no image on the film. These two types of pores are considered separately below. Type 1 Pores. When 6 is greater than 0, the image of a spherical cavity of radius r appears on the film as a circle of radius a which is smaller than r. In a previous paper, ozone was shown to remove residual xanthates in flotation pulp solutions as well as to destroy the xanthate coating on bulk copper-nickel sulfide concentrates before differential flotation (Iwasaki and Malicsi, 1985). The oxidation and decom- position mechanisms of xanthate solutions in the presence of commonly used oxidants such as oxygen, chlorine, hypochlorite, bromine, iodine, and hydrogen peroxide at different pH levels have been reported in the past (Rao, 1971). Most of these studies have been restricted to xanthate solutions of pH less than 10. Very few references are available on xanthate decomposition in highly alkaline (pH > 12) solutions (Jones and Woodcock, 1983; Philipp and Fichte, 1960; Tipman and Leja, 1975). No systematic study of xanthate oxidation by ozone has been reported, although its use in flotation has been recognized of late (Allegrini et al., IWO; Ishii et al., 1970; Matsubara et al., 1978). To improve the efficiency of ozone use in flotation, it is essential to understand the mechanisms involved in the decomposition of xanthates with ozone, more specifically, to establish the stoichiometry and decomposition rate. In the present work, a preliminary attempt was made to investigate the effect of pH on xanthate decomposition, and probable mechanisms of xanthate oxidation with ozone.

The others are July, January, September, April, November, May, March, June, December, August and February." -Mark Twain Although the preceding chapters describe the type of preliminary evaluation frequently performed in the mining industry, it has been assumed that input data are known with certainty-clearly an enormous simplification. In reality, estimates of ore grade, mining cost, metal price, etc., are subject to varying degrees of uncertainty due to the inability to predict the future with much precision. Management would probably not, for example, be equally attracted to two projects each offering a 20% DCFROI-one for a new gold venture in Nevada and the other for an undersea manganese nodule operation in the Pacific. The high risk with the latter investment tells the obvious; there is more to investment decision-making than a deterministic analysis using "best estimates" of input parameters. The science of decision theory normally distinguishes between decisions under uncertainty, where probabilities of various outcomes are unknown; and decisions under risk, where such probabilities can be estimated. The first case is rarely en- countered in practical capital investment analysis in mining, so the remainder of this chapter focuses on that class of problems where rational probability distributions for the future states of input variables can be estimated. RISK IN MINING Risk in the context of this chapter is the unforeseen deviation of individual cash flows from expected values for a capital project. A PREVIOUS paper1 has summarized the effect of A all metallic elements on the lattice parameters of magnesium. The present paper deals with the effect of temperature on the lattice parameters and the way in which that effect is modified by alloyed elements. The experimental techniques for sample preparation, exposure to the X-ray beam, measurement of line diameters, and calculation of the parameters were the same as reported in the previous paper. The temperature of the specimen was raised by surrounding the mounted compact with a conical Glas-Col,* the base of which was sealed with Saran film. In this way the temperature of the specimen could be raised to 200 °C, which was the maximum desired in the present study. Control of temperature was effected by maintaining a constant, desired voltage to the resistance coils of the Glas-Col through a Variac. Temperature was measured by an iron constantan thermocouple embedded in the body of the specimerl so that the thermocouple bead was within 1/16 in. of the surface exposed to the X-ray beam. Variation of temperature during an exposure was less than + 1/4 oF. A series of eight alloys, consisting of pure Mg, Mg+Ag, Mg+Al, and Mg+Sn were studied. All percentage values are in atomic percent. Heine&apos;s " blue test" for copper, as described by the authorities generally, calls for a set of standard colors; and there has been some discussion concerning the relative superiority, for this purpose, of sulphate and nitrate solutions. The whole matter evidently hinges on the preservation of the standard colors in well-stoppered bottles. The apparatus described by Q. L. Heath* cannot be much improved, when very accurate readings are required. The following method was devised for the purpose of doing away with preserved sets of standard colors, by making a fresh standard for each batch of assays. The solutions are prepared in the usual way, each ammoniacal solution being filtered into its separate bottle, and then filled up to the containing-mark and thoroughly mixed. A similar color-bottle, with an " S " etched upon it, to distinguish it from the other bottles, which are numbered to correspond with the samples, is kept to run the standard. About 150 C.C. of water is put into it, and then the amount of acid (sulphuric or nitric) present in each determination, followed by 30 C.C. of ammonia (s. g. 0.90), which should make the mixture strongly ammoniacal. The liquid is now made up almost to the containing-mark (200 c.c.), say within 1 C.C. The lowest assay is selected first and placed alongside the standard, which, at the beginning, contains no copper. A copper-solution is then dropped into the standard from a burette ; and after each addition the bottle is well shaken and compared with the assay-sample. This operation is repeated until the two shades match exactly, when the burette is read and the assay-result is calculated. The assay next in order of depth of color is now taken and treated in the same way, and so on, until the batch is completed. It
