It has been a matter of concern to the petroleum industry to determine what effect the capillary term has on saturation profiles, since these profiles determine ultimate economic oil recovery. In their original solution of the non-capillary two-phase flow problem, Buckley and Leverett&apos; showed that solutions of the two-phase flow equations became multiple-valued in saturation. Since it is physically unrealistic for saturation to have more than one value at a given position, Buckley and Leverett resolved this difficulty by introducing a saturation discontinuity or "shock". They evaluated the strength and position of the shock from material balance considerations. Recently Sheldon, Zondek and Cardwell&apos; have demonstrated that the method of characteristics can be used to solve this and related problems. Owing to capillarity it is physically unlikely that saturation shocks occur in an oil reservoir. Buckley and Leverett suggested that the effects of interfacial tensions should be included in the fluid flow equations, if the solutions are to give continuous single-valued saturation distributions. An analogy to this problem is encountered in the theory of wpersonic compressible flow where the introduction of the viscous term eliminates shock behavior. However, the mathematical form of the capillary term in the porous medium fluid flow equations differs from the viscosity term in the Navier-Stokes equation. This paper demons~rates that capillarity does eliminate the triple-valued behavior and indicates the magnitude of capillary and gravity effects on the saturation profile for a variety of systems. DERIVATION OF LAGRANGIAN AND EULERIAN FORMS OF THE DISPLACEMENT EQUATION The equations representing capillary, two-phase flow are given by applying Darcy&apos;s law and a material balance condition for each phase. In my paper on the estimation of manganese, etc., presented at the Halifax meeting, in September, 1885 (Transactions, xiv., 372), I said that the colorimetric process "can never be made to give reliable results." This statement was based on the results of many trials made by my assistant, Mr. E. D. Campbell, and myself, following in our work the printed and oral directions of others, and such modifications as suggested themselves from time to time. The accuracy of the statement having been questioned, I have, since then, endeavored to find some method of conducting the operation which would give accurate results; I have also tried the methods used by five different chemists; and I am not able to bring the process within the limits of an exact method. While it can fairly be ranked with the colorimetric carbon-process, and can be used for checking the operations of a steel plant, yet it requires more care to obtain uniform results, and is liable to greater variations from slight causes than the carbon-process, and, in my judgment, is not a safe method to employ when exact results are sought.

IN the past few years many men, including technically trained engi-neers, have been asphyxiated in metal mines, coal mines, tunnels and surface wells where a few relatively simple precautions with regard to ventilation and air testing would have saved them. Death from mine gases is analogous in some respects to death from poison and from drowning. The respiratory passages of a victim who has breathed oxides of nitrogen from burning explosives are badly irritated and a few hours or even a day after exposure he may develop a quick and fatal pneumonia; if, however, he enters without respiratory protective apparatus an atmosphere deficient in oxygen (a condition that may occur in unventilated or poorly ventilated parts of all underground mines) he collapses and if not rescued dies more quickly and surely than a lone nonswimmer who falls suddenly into deep water. An example of an atmosphere virtually without oxygen was demonstrated by an air sample taken by a Bureau of Mines engineer wearing oxygen breathing apparatus in a Cripple Creek shaft some years ago, during the recovery of the bodies of two victims of asphyxiation; analysis of the sample by the Pittsburgh laboratory of the Bureau showed the presence of 18.40 per cent of carbon dioxide, 0.27 per cent of oxygen, and 81.33 per cent of nitrogen, although the atmosphere apparently was clear and normal. In a mine one can pass from good, breathable air to an atmosphere that will kill as quickly as one can dive from a board to deep water below.

This paper describes a computerized simulation system developed by KETRON, Inc., in cooperation with the US Bureau of Mines. The system is designed for use by mine managers and engineers rather than computer specialists and allows the novice user to arbitrarily create room-and-pillar mine plans, with the computer illustrating the simulation of face activities on a video screen. Extensive visibility of the simulation is provided by visual display of the machine elements and their movement in the section to accommodate the extraction, roof control, place changing, and haulage operations. Performance statistics are also generated to analyze the operations. Both conventional and continuous mining methods can be simulated. In addition to simulating arbitrary scenarios, the system can also be used to display actual time-studied operations and maintain a file of these activities. Practical applications and case studies are provided in the paper to demonstrate the usefulness of the system. The system is designed to operate on a desk-top mini computer and is currently installed on a Hewlett-Packard 9854B system with 450 K bytes of memory.

Activities of aluminum in solid Fe-Al alloys have been determined between 0 and 75 at, pct Al and 1100" and 1400°K by an isopiestic method in which iron specimens, heated in a temperature gradient, are equilibrated in a closed all-ceramic system with aluminum vapor. The activity of aluminum in these alloys shows a strong negative deviation from Raoult&apos;s law at low concentrations but increases rapidly above 40 at. pct Al. The enthalpy and entropy of mixing me both negative. For an alloy with equiatomic composition the values are: HM = -7300 cal and SM = -0.85 eu. Sodium chloride has been added at lower temperatures to accelerate the evaporation of aluminum. Equations have been derived to calculate activities of aluminum from experimental data. THE Fe-Al system has been the object of a great number of investigations.&apos; Most of these studies have been concerned with the phase diagram and specifically with the order-disorder reactions in the range of solid solutions of aluminum in iron. The results have been compiled by Hansen2 and presented as a complete phase diagram, Fig. 1. More recently, Taylor and ones&apos; have found that both ordered and disordered alloys can exist in the a field up to the solidus curve separated by a line starting at 18.75 at. pct Al at room temperature up to 37 at. pct Al at 1375°C. Grinding in steel mills adversely affects the flotation of pyrrhotite. The electrochemical nature of inter action between pyrrhotite and active metals was investigated by contacting pyrrhotite with platinum at different applied potentials. Flotation tests, scanning electron microscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were wed to examine the surface properties of pyrrhotite. The formation of hydroxide or oxide and sulfate species of iron through the oxygen reduction reaction at the cathodically polarized surface of pyrrhotite was shown to be the mechanism responsible for the reduced floatability of pyrrhotite.

At the Kidd Creek mine operated by Ecstall Mining, Ltd. near Timmins, Ontario, Honeywell has installed a sophisticated new quick- thinking computer system that keeps tabs on conditions along three separate processing streams at once and relays continuous 60-second data to the mill operator. Believed to be the first of its kind, the system picks up data from two independent x-ray spectrometers simultaneously. A digital computer from Honeywell&apos;s Computer Control Division receives and interprets real-time information gathered by online x-ray analyzers, and the system then advises control room operators of the relative amount of each of five elements at five points in each of the three process streams. The system is reported to provide a quantitative analysis of the five elements at a given point in the process within one minute-which is about 120 times as fast as a chemical laboratory assay could be performed. With this instant data at his command, the mill operator can make timely process adjustments to correct any deviation from optimum flotation results, thus salvaging valuable minerals that would inevitably be lost with slower detection methods. The minerals recovered at Kidd creek are copper, lead, iron, silver and zinc.

Activity in the oil industry in Peru during 1930 was confined almost entirely to the three old producing fields in the northern coastal area. In the eastern part of Peru, in the valleys of the Maranon, Ueayali and Huallaga rivers, additional geologic work was carried on, but no drilling was undertaken. The Peruvian Government granted a concession on June 27, 1930, to W. R. Davis and associates for the building of a railroad from the west coast at Bayovar to Yurimaguas on the Huallaga River. This concession contemplates the construction of 800 to 900 km. of railroad across the Andes and carries with it a grant to the concessionaire of 12,500,000 acres of land with oil and mineral rights. A similar concession was granted in 1926 but after several extensions was rescinded in July, 1929, on the grounds that the concessionaire had failed to begin work on the railroad within the time limits of the contract and its extensions. The reduction of approximately 8 per cent. in 1930 as compared with 1929 is the result of the world&apos;s overproduction and the attempt on the part of the International to restrict the output to conform with the available market. Among the rich mineral deposits of the great Appalachian field, the Pittsburgh coal bed stands pre-eminent. Other coal beds may cover a wider area, or extend with greater persistence, but none surpasses the Pittsburgh seam in economic importance and value. It was well named by Rogers, and his able assistants of the First Geological Survey of Pennsylvania, in honor of the city to whose industrial growth and supremacy it has contributed so much. Whether or not the prophetic eye of that able geologist ever comprehended fully the part which this coal bed was to play in the future history of the city that gave it a name we do not know; but certain it is that the 7 ft. of fossil fuel, which, in Rogers&apos; time, circled in a long black band around the hills and, overlooking the site of Pittsburgh from an elevation of 400 ft. above the water of the Allegheny and Monongahela, extended up the latter stream in an unbroken sheet for a distance of 200 miles, has been the most potent factor in that wonderful modern growth that has made the Pittsburgh district the manufacturing center of America, and that bids fair to continue until it shall surpass every other district in the world, even if it does not now hold such primacy.&apos; The Pittsburgh coal bed stands today as probably the largest contributor of wealth of any single mineral deposit in the world. If it is not, what other deposit is? It has contributed to Pennsylvania alone more than 2,500,000,000 tons of high-grade coal worth nearly $4,000,000,000; since 1910, it has added more than $2,500,000,000 to the value of Pennsylvania&apos;s mineral output. Two separate but closely related projects now under construction on the St. Lawrence River- the Seaway and the St. Lawrence Power Project- are providing the impetus for what may become one of the most significant economic expansions in the Northeast. By 1959, or even earlier, electric power will be flowing from the largest single hydroelectric installation east of the Rockies. Simultaneously there will come into existence a great new commercial waterway which will provide cheap transportation from the farm and industrial heartlands of the U. S. and Canada to the markets and resources of the world. When the Seaway is completed, vessels with five to ten times the capacity of those now using the Canadian canal system will be able to move from the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Superior.

By treating the dislocation like a surface and ap-plying the usual thermodynamic treatment to the adsorption process a Gibbs adsorption equation for dislocations was derived. For extended dislocations in binary solutions the adsorbed concentration on the fault, X2a, may be computed from (jo/da2b) where a2b is the activity of the solute in the bulk material and s is the stacking-fault energy. Using the data of Howie and Swann for s the adsorption concentration goes through a maximum at 2 at. pct Al in Ag-Al, 10 at. pct Zn in Cu-Zn, and 8 at. pct A1 in Cu-Al. The pinning stress calculated from this concentration difference goes Ihrough a maximum at the same concentration us the peak in X2 a. The computed pinning stress thus does not vary with composition in the manner predicted by Suzuki, as was also pointed out by Hendrickson. The results are compared with the stress increment which can be attributed to Suzuki locking in Cu-Zn and Cu-Al stress-strain curves. They both agree in magnitude and in the location of the maximum. The predicted and observed maximum values for the Cu-Zn system (where activity data are available) are 700 g per sq mm (predicted) and 1000 g per sq mm (measured, laking into account the orientation factor of 2.2 to convert poly-crystalline to single-crystal data). CERTAIN simple internal surfaces may be regarded as dislocation grids. This fact suggested that it might be profitable to consider certain phenomena related to segregation of solute atoms at dislocations from the point of view of the thermodynamics of surfaces and surface adsorption. A general treatment of this type is given and then the results are applied to Suzuki segregation and pinning. Confirmation of the results is obtained from comparison of stress-strain behavior for copper and copper-base alloys. Two kinds of dislocations need be treated: perfect and extended dislocations. In either case the line tension of a dislocation, ?. the work which must be done to increase the length of dislocation by a unit length, is analogous to the surface tension. For an undissociated dislocation ? is the self-energy of a unit length of dislocation; for an extended dislocation where is the self-energy per unit length of a pair of partials far enough apart so that there is no interaction energy, is the interaction energy per unit length, is the stacking fault energy per unit area, and w is the equilibrium separation of the paired partials. In the absence of an applied stress the force pushing the dislocation partials apart in a close-packed structure is Gb2/12p where G is the shear modulus, b is the Burgers&apos; vector of the complete dislocation, and is the separation of the partials. A CONSIDERABLE number of experiments in recent years have definitely established the fact that the internal friction or mechanical hysteresis of a metal under cyclic stress is a property that is highly "structure sensitive." Because of this fact, it has been suggested that an observa-tion of this property, which often is referred to as "clamping capacity," might he a useful indicator of structural changes taking place when a metal or alloy is subjected to any of a number of metallurgical treatments. Damping capacity is of interest to both engineer and metallurgist, but from a rather different point of view, and the information that each desires from such observations is of a different nature. The metallurgist is in search of various external indications of changes taking place in the interior of a metal; changes which are in themselves not directly observa-ble. Even if the observed phenomenon cannot be explained in funda-mental terms, it may be empirically related to certain characteristics of the material and prove of real value in research. Internal friction or mechanical hysteresis occupies such a position, and, although it is not well understood in terms of basic metallic theory, an observation of its changes can serve in a very useful capacity. Of course, there is nothing new in the measurement of damping, but the use of this property in metallurgical research constitutes a vast field, which has received all too little attention. The present work is essentially of an exploratory nature in this field and is an attempt to evaluate the process as a research tool. The phenomenon of age-hardening was chosen as a typical example of a structural change and one method of measuring damping was examined in considerable detail.

Definition An industrial mineral, says the Glossary of Geology, is "any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metallic ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones; one of the nonmetallics." Probably most geologists and engineers would accept this simple and straightforward definition, at least as a general statement. On analysis, however, certain anomalies crop up. For example, it may be considered arbitrary to include industrial diamond and corundum and to exclude their precious varieties, gem diamond and sapphire. So the present volume has a section on gems and gem materials, in spite of the definition. Another problem arises when we try to define precisely what is metallic and what is nonmetallic. Bauxite and ilmenite certainly qualify as metallic ores, but both are also raw materials of important nonmetallic substances; hence they are included in the book, A third anomaly is that, by common consent of geologists, engineers, mineral economists, and others concerned, the term industrial minerals may include not only rocks and minerals but also certain manufactured products like cement and lime, and even mixed groups of natural and artificial products, such as abrasives and refractories. Thus the central realm of the industrial minerals is clear enough, but its boundaries tend to be indefinable. Since a definition that allowed for every irregularity in the outer fringes would be excessively unwieldy, the one quoted above may be considered satisfactory. The expression industrial minerals is commonly equated with nonmetallics, and with the somewhat more precise phrase industrial minerals and rocks as in the title of this book. Characteristics of the Field The industrial minerals as broadly interpreted are a highly diverse group of materials; indeed, we may say paradoxically that diversity is about all they have in common. At one end of the spectrum are ordinary earth materials such as gravel and crushed stone, with a value of perhaps $3 per st; at the opposite end are industrial diamonds, which sell (by the carat) at the rate of roughly $18,000,000 per st. Neither the metals nor the fuels, and few if any categories of manufactured products, include items that differ in value by more than six orders of magnitude. Most gravel and stone are of no value unless close to a market; diamonds and other exotic substances possess such unique and desirable properties that their occurrence in remote corners of the earth is no deterrent to their use. The broad range of industrial minerals falls between these extremes of unit value and place value. The industrial minerals penetrate the entire fabric of modern industrialized society, from such fundamental operations as drilling for oil and smelting iron ore to the manufacture of virtually the whole array of consumer products. There is no industrial-minerals industry; there are many industries. The simple term field is convenient as an all-inclusive expression. An industry is considered to belong in the industrial-minerals field if its operations consist of extraction and processing, but not manufacturing. Thus the mining and beneficiation of feldspar is a mineral industry, but the manufacture of ceramic products is not. In the cement and lime industries, processing merges into manufacture, and the line is less distinct. It disappears altogether in a plant that extracts salt as artificial brines, and makes sodium and chlorine chemicals, all under the same roof.
