EVE have studied the gold-aluminum system by X-ray diffraction and by the microscope over the entire range of composition for temperatures between 300° and 500° C. Results obtained are shown in Fig. 1, com-bined with the work of Heycock and Neville1 at higher temperatures. The diagram differs in important details from that given by Hansen2 in his critical compilation of the literature of binary alloy systems. This work was, undertaken both because of the intrinsic value of a knowledge of the phase diagram of this system and because of the need of theoretical metallurgy for precise and accurate data, particularly X-ray diffraction data. Systematic studies of equilibrium diagrams, particularly by Hume-Rothery,3 have shown regularities that yield a certain insight into the nature of alloying forces. It has been shown, for example, that solid solubility depends on the concentration of free electrons in the alloy, on the relative radii of solvent and solute atones, on the forces of attraction between atoms, and on the relative stability of intermediate phases. The well-known Hume-Rothery rule states that the crystal structures and compositions of many intermediate phases depend on the electron-to-atom ratio. This has been confirmed and extended by wave mechanical calculations.4 A knowledge of the forces between atoms in alloys, even an imperfectly developed empirical one, should be a valuable guide in the preparation of technological alloys of desirable properties. Furthermore, such informa-tion is basic in such problems as rate of diffusion, age-hardening, phase transformations, and others. The outstanding development in the Rocky Mountain region for 1937 was the discovery of oil on the Wilson Creek dome in Rio Blanco County, Colorado, in the Morrison formation of Jurassic age. This discovery opens up a vast territory to exploitation and definitely establishes the western slope of Colorado as one of the region's more important oil areas. In former years, a large number of structures on the western slope were tested dry in Upper Cretaceous rocks but are now believed to hold possibilities in older formations, and a number of such structures are in line for drilling in 1938.

RECENTLY, areas of abnormal rock pressure have been drilled on the Gulf Coast of the United States. These pressures may be caused by the recent and pronounced raising of some of the structures without loss of the formation pressure that existed when the reservoir was developing and the producing sand much more deeply buried. It is possible also that a permeable fissure may connect a shallow accumulation of gas with the gas cap of a much deeper reservoir of oil, gas and water. The pressures are so great that dependence on blowout-prevention equipment alone is hazardous to life and property. Fortunately, wells with excessive casing-head pressures, such as the Stanolind Oates No. 1 of the South Houston field, an 8700-ft. gas well with 6000 lb. per sq. in., and the near-by Stanolind Candelari No. 1, and 8100-ft. gas well with 5000 lb. per sq. in., have not blown out and cratered. A case is on record of drill pipe in a, well in Harris County, Texas, (Oates No. 1) rotating for 8 hr. through blowout-prevention rants holding a back pressure of 2900 1b. per sq. in. at the casinghead after the mud was altered by salt-water intrusion. Such conditions warrant the use of extremely heavy muds having low viscosity, made from galena (PbS) or specially prepared mixtures of hematite (Fe203) and galena suspended by bentonite. In some Gulf Coast wells, sodium silicate mixed with concentrated brine is used to drill through heaving shale formations. Such a fluid inhibits heaving remarkably, but it is expensive and costs as much as $10 per barrel. Barite has been used to weight this mixture. However, this mineral too rapidly increased an already excessive viscosity and it was thought that galena might be better for weighting such drilling fluid. The operator was anxious to try the latter, but none was available in the district.

IT has been shown elsewhere1 that the data on the rates of diffusion in solid metals are fragmentary and in many cases unacceptable. As a result, relatively little is known concerning the factors determining rates of diffusion and the variations in these rates with temperature. The first form of Fick's law (equation 1 below), ? in which the diffusion coefficient D is assumed invariant with composition, has been recognized for many years as only an approximation. The differential equation representing the second form of Fick's law (equation 4 below) has only recently been integrated by Matano,2 and unfortunately only in cases where a full diffusion-penetration curve (concentration-distance curve) has been obtained can the Matano solution be applied. The proper analysis of diffusion data is thus confined to the data of Grube and Jedele and of Jedele.§ These data are essentially for one temperature alone and do not furnish any information on the variation of the activa-tion heat of diffusion, Q, with concentration: no information exists on the variation of Q with concentration within a singles olid solution field. Much of the argument concerning the properties of metals that deter-mine D and Q has been drawn from data in which variations of the quan-tities with concentration are unknown, for these data- have been taken from experiments that could not furnish this information. Speculation concerning the properties of metals that may be effective in determining D and Q on the basis of data in which the chosen D and Q values are averages over wide concentration ranges of values at particular concen-trations, ranges often of 100 per cent, is likely not to be fruitful.

1. Healthy and active Local Section organizations are vital factors in promoting the vigor and growth of the Institute. 2. Activity on the part of Local. Sections should be recognized and stim¬ulated by appropriation of funds from the Institute's treasury; and these appropriations should be as large as is consistent with the relative needs for other activities. 3. As between different Sections, the amount of such appropriations should be based primarily on the extent of activities as reflected in the number and character, of meetings held and the attendance of the members at such meetings. 4. In making a request for funds for any year, the officers of a Local Section should submit a report on the printed form approved by the Directors at their meeting on November 19, 1937. 5. A . standing Committee on Local Section Appropriations, consisting of one past chairman of a Local Section, one member of the Institute's Executive Committee, and one member of the Finance Committee, shall be appointed by the President and shall pass upon requests for appropriations and authorize payments within bounds of the budget. The committee will be guided by the principles herein outlined, always having in mind the vital importance of healthy, active sections to the welfare of the Institute as a whole.

Development of the lime industry in Ste. Genevieve County began in a crude way in 1840. According to information furnished by the Missouri Bureau of Geology, in the early days small vertical kilns built of stone were used, and wood was the fuel. Modern development began in 1904 when one company introduced steel shells lined with firebrick. Within a few years two more companies erected similar plants, and in 1925 a fourth company began operations. Thus there arc today four lime companies at Ste. Genevieve, all operating at high capacity and with a gradually increasing production. Geology The limestone of Ste. Genevieve County, which has the chemical composition and purity required for lime burning, is the upper 80 or 90 ft, of Spergen formation. The Missouri Bureau of Geology, in its geological map of Ste. Genevieve County, gives the Spergen formation a total thickness of 160 ft., but only the upper portion is pure enough for lime burning, with an average raw-stone analysis of 98.7 per cent CaCo3; 0.35 SiO2; 0.3 R2O3; 0.35 MgCO3; 0.3 SO3. The Spergen, one member of the Meramac group, Iowa series, of the Mississippian system, underlies an area approximately 12 miles long north and south, by 5 miles wide east and west (Fig. 1) in Ste. Genevieve County. The entire eastern two-thirds of Ste. Genevieve County is sedimentary, the formations dipping gently toward the east on an average grade of about 4 per cent, or 2 1/2°. Thus the outcrops of the various sedimentaries run approximately north and south. A line running west from Ste. Genevievc crosses the outcrops of the sedimentaries, ranging from the top of the Mississippian to the Ozarkian geological system in a space of 12 miles. Thus with the gentle dip of 2 1/2° the 160-ft. thickness of the Spergen formation stretches out in its outcrop so that it is approximately one mile wide. FROM the Pittsburgh coal bed in the four states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland and West Virginia has been produced an output that, at mine prices, represents a greater value than any other single mineral deposit in the world has yielded.12 While this distinction may in a few years pass to the gold reef of the Witwatersrand, it is possible that eventually, owing to the tremendous reserves still remaining, the ultimate yield of the Pittsburgh bed will be greater than that of any other known single deposit. Considering its importance, not a great deal has been written of its early history and development as a whole; most of the accounts have been of limited localities, or, at the most, of the area within a single state. In "Coal through the Ages" the writer mentioned some references to its early history, but this study will deal not only with its history but with the character of the bed, where and why it was first developed, and its effect upon the states in which it is found. It has not been the intention to write a detailed history of the development of the seam in each locality, as neither time nor inclination were available for doing such work, but only to show the influences that tended to hasten or retard such development. In general the historical matter ends about 1830, when geological surveys began to be made. Some of the maps show data available only since that time, and the sections about coal preparation and coking have been extended to the present time to show the changing conditions. It is believed that the early history includes all published records, and many more sources than those shown in the bibliography were consulted. It is quite likely that some references to coal in this area may be found in the unpublished papers of some of our early soldiers and colonizers, which exist in several libraries, and it is hoped that some future

At its meeting in the fall of 1937, the Executive Committee of the Coal Division considered the growing scarcity of young engineers entering coal mining with serious intentions. This scarcity was the cause of considerable alarm and a committee consisting of C. T. Hayden, E. A. Holbrook, C. E. Lawall and L. E. Young, with the writer as chairman, was appointed to gather factual data on the current trend. A questionnaire1 was designed and mailed to the heads of the 60 mineral technology schools listed by Prof. W. B. Plank in his article in September 1937.2 Replies were received from 46 institutions, not all from heads of coal-mining courses but all from men that at one time or another have had experience with some kind of coal-mining curricula and know current student impressions. Our committee is indebted to all of these gentlemen for their cooperation. Our committee hoped by this means to quickly reach the root of the trouble and make a set of comprehensive recommendations to the Coal Division for relieving the industry immediately from the growing dearth of youth who yearn for coal-mining careers, but the condition is more serious than at first diagnosed. We must now refer the question back to the Coal Division, with the recommendation that the Division get the industry's permission for still another major operation on its frame of mind. In addition to 10-year statistics on the first pay received by graduates in coal mining and other technical work, we requested enrollment data for 20 years from all schools with either mining engineering or mineral technology curricula. Nine leading questions were also plied, as shown in the Appendix. Every one of the answers was significant and interesting. Fortunately, we encountered positive frankness that was extremely helpful.

Peru produced approximately 17,466,620 bbl., of oil during 1937, or slightly less than the record high of 17,593,700 bbl. established during 1936. As in 1936, the entire output of the country was derived from the La Brea-Parinas, Lobitos-Restin and Zorritos fields in the northwestern part of the country. Outside of the proven areas, drilling was 'continued by the Peruvian Government in the northern province of Tumbes on the reserved zone at Zorritos. Drilling was carried out on three locations, two of which are understood to have been abandoned during the year. In southern Peru, further attention was given by Government engineers to the Pusi and Saman districts and plans are being worked out for the commencement of drilling operations in the near future in the vicinity of Pirin. Activities in the montaiia region in eastern Peru were continued by the Compafiia Petrolera El Ganso Azul. This company acquired the interest of the Selden Breck Co., and holds some 90,000 acres along the Pachitea River a few miles above its confluence with the Ucayali. During the year, the preparation of a landing place, the cutting of a 12-km. (71/2-mile) road from the river to the drill site, and the construction of a camp were undertaken. Equipment for drilling on this company's concessions has already arrived in South America. La Brea-Parinas Estate.—Production of crude oil on the La Brea-Parinas Estate of the International Petroleum Company Limited amounted to 14,722,754 bbl. during 1937, a decrease of 403,736 bbl. from the all-time high reached during 1936. The total production from 1890 to Dec. 31,1937, was 178,390,767 bbl. During 1937, a total of 141,653 ft. was drilled, 129,516 ft. in new wells and 12,137 in deepening existing wells. In all, 57 wells were completed, 47 of which produced oil, 2 were gas wells and 8 dry. holes. Twenty-nine wells were cleaned out or deepened during the year. The average depth of new wells completed during 1937 was 2367 ft. compared with 1984 ft. for the new wells completed during 1936. There was an increased use of rotary tools during the year and this method is now used to a greater extent than the cable-tool method, which formerly predominated. IN the past few years many men, including technically trained engi-neers, have been asphyxiated in metal mines, coal mines, tunnels and surface wells where a few relatively simple precautions with regard to ventilation and air testing would have saved them. Death from mine gases is analogous in some respects to death from poison and from drowning. The respiratory passages of a victim who has breathed oxides of nitrogen from burning explosives are badly irritated and a few hours or even a day after exposure he may develop a quick and fatal pneumonia; if, however, he enters without respiratory protective apparatus an atmosphere deficient in oxygen (a condition that may occur in unventilated or poorly ventilated parts of all underground mines) he collapses and if not rescued dies more quickly and surely than a lone nonswimmer who falls suddenly into deep water. An example of an atmosphere virtually without oxygen was demonstrated by an air sample taken by a Bureau of Mines engineer wearing oxygen breathing apparatus in a Cripple Creek shaft some years ago, during the recovery of the bodies of two victims of asphyxiation; analysis of the sample by the Pittsburgh laboratory of the Bureau showed the presence of 18.40 per cent of carbon dioxide, 0.27 per cent of oxygen, and 81.33 per cent of nitrogen, although the atmosphere apparently was clear and normal. In a mine one can pass from good, breathable air to an atmosphere that will kill as quickly as one can dive from a board to deep water below.

A CONSIDERABLE number of experiments in recent years have definitely established the fact that the internal friction or mechanical hysteresis of a metal under cyclic stress is a property that is highly "structure sensitive." Because of this fact, it has been suggested that an observa-tion of this property, which often is referred to as "clamping capacity," might he a useful indicator of structural changes taking place when a metal or alloy is subjected to any of a number of metallurgical treatments. Damping capacity is of interest to both engineer and metallurgist, but from a rather different point of view, and the information that each desires from such observations is of a different nature. The metallurgist is in search of various external indications of changes taking place in the interior of a metal; changes which are in themselves not directly observa-ble. Even if the observed phenomenon cannot be explained in funda-mental terms, it may be empirically related to certain characteristics of the material and prove of real value in research. Internal friction or mechanical hysteresis occupies such a position, and, although it is not well understood in terms of basic metallic theory, an observation of its changes can serve in a very useful capacity. Of course, there is nothing new in the measurement of damping, but the use of this property in metallurgical research constitutes a vast field, which has received all too little attention. The present work is essentially of an exploratory nature in this field and is an attempt to evaluate the process as a research tool. The phenomenon of age-hardening was chosen as a typical example of a structural change and one method of measuring damping was examined in considerable detail.

DoctoR Albert Sauveur, distinguished scientist and Honorary Member of this Institute, predicted in the first Howe Memorial Lecture that the privilege of delivering' this annual address would be considered a highly significant honor. The intervening years have well borne out Sauveur's prophecy. I wish to assure the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers that I also deeply appreciate this honor, recognizing at the same time the present and even more the future responsibilities with which it is accompanicd. Several of the previous lecturers had the good fortune to attend the classes of Professor Howc and to work in his laboratories. I was similarly favored, although in my instance and to my great regret the period was all too short. However, Howe's book, published in 1903, "Iron, Steel and Other Alloys," afforded me abundant opportunity to continue these studies. How well I remember the inspiration I derived from this famous book by Howe, the metallurgical master, pioneer, and educator! Remembering that Professor Howe contributed numerous papers to The Metallographist, a magazine supported from a technical point of view by the world's pioneers in metallography, I was curious a few days ago to learn the nature of Howe's early contributions to this magazine. The first paper by Howe in the first year of The Metallographist (1898) dealt with the allotropic theory; the second also treated of allotropy, and I quote the first sentence of that paper: The allotropic theory of the hardening of steel may, like so many other important theories, have to be accepted or rejected not on direct proof or disproof, but on the accumulation of circumstantial evidence for or against it. Howe's ability to stimulate others by his deep understanding and clarity of expression was truly remarkable; but just as striking was his intuitive judgment concerning the implications of metallurgical data in the arts and scienees. It therefore seems fitting that this lecture comprise a broad treatment of the subject chosen, rather than a closely documented thesis on any one phase of the problem; that in it attention be focused

MANY of the platinum metal alloys are hot-forged in the early stages of reduction from ingot and substantial quantities of platinum alloys are commercially employed at very high temperatures in ammonia oxidation units, orifices for forming glass rods and fibers and as cathodes in long-life thermionic amplifiers. They are used also for electrical heating resistors, safety blowout disks, thermocouples and crucibles. The tensile prop-erties at elevated temperatures are important in many of these situations but data on the subject are limited. Creep data also are important, but will not be covered at this time. SCOPE AND CONCLUSIONS Tensile tests were carried out at room temperature and elevated temperatures up to 1100° C. on previously well annealed samples of platinum, palladium and several of their important alloys with composi-tions shown in Table 1. The results are presented graphically in Figs. 1 to 4. The tensile strengths of platinum and the platinum-base alloys (with the exception of the 10 per cent rhodium-platinum alloy) at 1100° C. are from 16.6 to 18.8 per cent of the strengths of the same alloys (well annealed) at room temperature. The strength ratio of the 10 per cent rhodium-platinum alloy is 22.3 per cent, which is appreciably higher than that of the other materials tested.

IN applied mechanics and in metallurgy the transition from elastic to inelastic action is a matter of considerable interest and importance. Often the first inelastic deformation is apparently quite homogeneous; that is, uniformly distributed throughout the specimen. Sometimes this deformation is heterogeneous; that is, localized; inelastic deformation proceeds to some definite amount in restricted regions before adjacent regions of the specimen are inclastically deformed. In such cases the deformation does not become homogeneous until the whole specimen has been deformed the amount corresponding to that for each localized deformation. If the test is stopped before uniform extension sets in, the heterogeneous character of the deformation is apparent on the surface of the specimen through characteristic markings, which have been called "Lüders"' lines, "Hartmann's" lines, the "Piobert effect," or simply "flow figures." These markings are the source of considerable trouble in fabricating operations, particularly in the deep drawing of steel sheet. In many cases where the transition is of this nature, the stress developed at the upper limit of the elastic range is greater than the stress during the period of heterogeneous deformation, giving rise to the familiar "drop of the beam" effect in testing. The amount of the yield-point elongation, as well as the value of the stress at the lower yield point (the value to which the stress drops when yielding begins), are functions of the tempera-ture and the testing speed. Lower temperatures and faster rates of testing increase both the yield-point elongation and the yield-point stress. These matters have been ably discussed in a recent paper by Winlock and Leiter1 though, as brought out by the discussion of that paper, the phenomena are but little understood. The purpose of the present paper is to clarify the problem through the application of a simple principle, and to show that, through the application of this principle, a number of phenomena in the plastic deformation of metals become more read-ily understood.

ONE of the most important contributions to the art of electrolytic zinc production has been the aluminum cathode. This has been used in all major production since its commercial development in 1916. The literature is replete with important contributions, some of which may have been replaced by better ones, but thus far there appears no other metal to take the place of aluminum as cathode material. Credit for this innovation goes to Sherard Cowper Coles, of England. When experi¬menting on the extraction of zinc from Broken Hill ore at Hayle, Cornwall, in 1893, he introduced the aluminum cathode, and in 1895 obtained British Patent No. 20073. The reason for this dominant position of aluminum as cathode material in zinc sulphate electrolytes is its unique surface, to which electrodeposited metals usually do not tightly adhere. The metal must be of high purity for best results. It is possible to develop a starting-sheet method by which thin electrodeposited sheets of cathode zinc are made and stripped from a smooth aluminum plate. Such thin sheets of cathode zinc may be used as are the copper sheets in standard electrolytic copper-refinery practice. However, complications arise because of extreme warping of the zinc starting sheet after a few hours of deposition, and thus special arrangements must be made to compensate for this abnormality. Reasons advanced for the ease with which deposits may be stripped from the aluminum surface are: (1) presence of a permanent oxide coating on the metal, (2) failure of aluminum to alloy with the deposit, (3) differences in coefficient of expansion, (4) high position of aluminum in the electromotive series of metals. Of these reasons for nonadherence, which may have some application in general deposition, probably the oxide coating has the greatest bearing on the subject of zinc deposition. THE Montreal mine, operated by the Montreal Mining Co., is four miles west of Ironwood, Mich., in Iron County, Wisconsin. It is the westernmost producing property on the Gogebic Iron Range of the Lake Superior district. Its production is 4000 tons of hematite per day from an average depth of 2300 ft. This tonnage is hoisted through a five-compartment vertical shaft. Several mining methods are in use but in the larger orebodies the method is sublcvel caving. ORE OCCURRENCE AND CHARATERISTICS The main orebodies of the Montreal mine lie in eastward-pitching troughs formed by the intersections of intrusive dikes with impervious members of the iron formation. The formation has an average width of 425 ft., strikes east and west and dips north at approximately 62°. The dikes dip south at 45° and bear north 20° from the strike of the formation, making the intersections with various members pitch east at 16°. The dikes are not continuous across the formation but are interrupted by a longitudinal bedding fault, which has a throw of 380 ft. vertically and 885 ft. horizontally. North of the fault zone the formation is called "hanging," south it is called " footwall" formation. The faulting has created two ore-bearing horizons; viz., at the inter- section of hanging dikes with the slate members and the foot dikes with the quartzite footwall. In each formation the main ore-bearing member consists of wavy beds of hard chert interlaid with hematite. In the most productive part of the mine, where the sublevel caving method is employed, a hanging-formation dike lies in juxtaposition with a footwall dike and the iron formation carries ore in certain sections from the quartzite footwall to the hanging dike. Here a horizontal section of the orebody may be 300 to 400 ft. wide for a length of 150 ft. or more and tail out lengthwise in both the foot and hanging formations. The footwall ore section is much longer than the hanging wall because of the orebody's greater height above the "pitching dike."

The stresses which initiate deformation processes in metals are fundamentally important in the study of the mechanical properties of metals. A point of inflection in the load-elongation curves obtained for single crystals' has been rather too readily interpreted as a true yield point, and the critical resolved shearing stress on the plane of slip taken as a material constant. Even early work showed that the stress at this point varies with rate of loading, but it has not been generally appreciated that creep tests under static loads alone are suited for determining the existence or nonexistence of a yield point.* It has now been shown by Miller that single crystals of zinc3 when loaded statically begin to yield at loads too small to measure; as a result there is no case now known, apart from that cited in the present paper, in which a true critical stress for yielding has been demonstrated for single crystals of metals. The case of iron has especial interest: the existence of an upper and lower yield point and of an elongation at the yield point in ordinary iron and steel marks this substance as unusual, though the effects have been found to a very minor degree in other metals and alloys. $ Most alloys do not show such marked phenomena when appreciable yielding begins, and accordingly modern practice is to speak of the yield strength of such materials, a stress read from the load-elongation curve after elongation has begun, rather than yield point. The special behavior of iron suggests that it is more likely that single crystals of iron should have a true yield point than other metals. The study of the mechanical properties of metals and alloys requires a determination of the crystallographic mechanism of deformation, wlletller deformation proceeds by slip, twinning, or cleavage, or a combination of these, and a determination of the stresses that induce these modes of deformation. AT the present time there are four base metals being used for automotive bearing alloys. Of course there are numerous variations in the amounts of alloying elements added to each base metal and nearly all of these alloys have the conventional, if not classical, duplex structure; that is, they are composed of a hard constituent embedded in a soft matrix. The well-known theory is that the former will wear well, while the latter will be plastic enough to allow the bearing to be broken in and conform to the contours of the shaft. The requirements of the modern bearing have been most aptly described by W. M. Corse: In order to meet the engineering demands of today a good bearing metal must be able to carry the weight of the shaft and stand up under steady or suddenly applied loads, or even blows in some types of service. A certain amount of plasticity is desired to compensate for minute irregularities in the shaft or bearing surface, and to permit yielding, thereby avoiding dangerous stresses in bearing and shaft and preventing overheating and rapid wear of parts. Less plasticity is required in a bearing metal if the surfaces of bearings and journals are machined accurately, aligned, and kept in alignment. It is desirable, of course, that a bearing metal have a low coefficient of friction. Under most operating conditions the friction depends on the unit pressure of the bearing, the speed, the temperature, and the properties of the lubricant. A good bearing metal must have a low rate of wear to reduce the necessity for frequent replacements, and adjustment of the bearings. It must wear more rapidly, however, than the journal or shaft running on it, because replacement of the journal or shaft is more difficult and costly than replacement of the hearing., The hardness of, the bearing alloy is a property closely related to several of the foregoing. With a duplex microstructure, the measurement of hardness with any of the usual commercial devices means little. The Bierbaum method of measuring the hardness of the individual constituents was developed to, fill this need.
