Henry Walker Eltin (HWE) are the mining contractors for Gloucester Coal at Stratford mine, which is in an environmentally sensitive area in the Avon Valley, NSW, Australia. Normal blasting at Stratford is done in a æstand upÆ or æbox cutÆ mode to suit the truck and shovel operations. Recently an opportunity of doing a throw blast became available when part of a ramp had to be blasted to accommodate changes to the pit design while not damaging the remainder of the ramp. The objective was to maximise throw into the void in order to minimise excavation costs by reducing the amount of overburden to be moved by the excavation fleet. It was necessary that the best result be achieved while staying within the vibration and airblast limits at a neighbouring property and nearby township. Both objectives were achieved through the application of OricaÆs knowledge of blast design, modelling and i-konTM electronic detonators. The i-kon system was used because of its known benefits in cast blasting and environmental control. The i-kon system provides the blaster with much greater accuracy, control and the flexibility to tailor blast designs. It has been found previously to enhance blast throw and provide cleaner high walls (Brent, 2002). The blast was a success, producing a muckpile with a high degree of looseness and consistent fragmentation, with an average throw to final spoil position of 37.5 per cent. This was achieved without any environmental exceedance. In addition, high speed filming showed that the coal edge had remained largely in place, indicating minimal coal loss. The results exceeded the expectations of HWE Stratford and the overall cost savings to HWE Stratford from this blast were recognised to be substantial. Further throw blasting opportunities at Stratford have been followed using the i-kon system to maximise benefits.

Using normal low pressure filtration methods for the dewatering of fine china clays, the best that can be achieved is cakes with about 30% moisture. In order to get the moisture levels down to acceptable levels the traditional method used is thermal drying, which is both costly and dust creating. It was to improve this process that ECC International embarked upon a programme of development of filtration equipment using high pressure to achieve significantly lower moisture levels. This development work investigated several design philosophies and culminated in the production of two quite different solutions. The High Pressure Plate Press uses round plates / chambers of one metre diameter and a filtration pressure of 70 bar. This press is fully automatic and produces a surface dry cake that has sufficient plasticity for the further processing that is required on specific qualities of china clay. The TUBE PRESS on the other hand uses a unique design configuration and operates at a filtration pressure of 100 or 140 bar, depending upon the model. The TUBE PRESS produces a brittle, surface dry cake that is easy to handle and a filtrate that is usually crystal clear. The TUBE PRESS achieves a much higher degree of separation than is possible with conventional equipment, which is particularly important if the filtrate is the product. Over the past 15 years plants incorporating both HP Plate Presses and TUBE PRESSES have been installed in the china clay operations of ECC International and are giving excellent trouble free service. The TUBE PRESS has also proved to be extremely versatile, effectively dewatering a wide range of fine particled slurries, in a number of diverse industries.

A major breakthrough in extending the life of the wear material of high pressure roll crushers when treating moist, highly abrasive material has removed the last impediment to the widespread acceptance of high pressure comminution in the minerals industry. The system is very energy efficient. It has been demonstrated that in the cement industry energy savings of up to 50 per cent have been achieved compared to conventional hall milling. Besides being energy efficient, the process provides some remarkable and useful effects; ò better liberation of mineral constituents (as proven for diamond liberation). ò preferential comminution where induced micro fissures follow grain boundaries. ò higher reactivity of the product due to micro fissures. All these points will be described here together with a review of current flowsheet design and incentives for the use of this method of Comminution.

High Pressure Sulfuric Acid/Oxygen Leaching of Platinum Group Metals Bearing Ni-Cu Mattes The processing of platinum bearing Ni-Cu ores for the extraction of platinum group metals (PGMs) involves comminution, flotation, smelting, and converter treatment of the furnace matte. Leaching circuits are predominantly used for further processing to separate the base metals and PGMs contained in the converter matte. Nickel dissolution is primarily achieved in the first stage leach (high pressure or atmospheric leaching, or a combination of the two), which is followed by second stage high pressure sulphuric acid/oxygen leaching to dissolve copper and the remaining nickel. PGMs are recovered from the leaching residue in downstream processes, and their dissolution in the first two leaching stages must hence be limited. Studies have been conducted to investigate the leaching mechanisms and kinetics of base metals in different leaching environments. The key operating parameters that influence the leaching kinetics of these metals include the temperature, acid concentration, degree of agitation, feed particle size distribution, and oxygen partial pressure. There is, however, a limited understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in the high pressure leaching process. Consequently, this process is controlled based on operators' intuition despite its importance in the recovery of PGMs. An improved fundamental understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in this leaching environment is required to be able to accurately model the process. This in turn will allow the development of an improved control strategy and the estimation of optimum operating conditions. An overview of the leaching mechanisms of base metals and the effects of key operating parameters on their dissolution kinetics in different leaching environments are presented. Models that have been developed to predict the leaching behaviour of base metals are discussed and evaluated. Finally, initial results obtained with an experimental setup that will be used to investigate the behaviour of PGMs in high pressure leaching systems are discussed and compared with published results.

Hydraulic fill using surface sand deposits or cycloned tailings has been used in underground mining for at least fifty years. Current technology requires a permeable fill and high cement additions for strong fill. Shortages in quantities of acceptable fill with finely ground ore may require rockfill or aggregate to be introduced as a supplement and these usually incur additional distribution costs. Alternative approaches to the problem are now being developed whereby the pulp density of the fill is raised so that it is delivered either as a dense slurry or as a paste. These regimes of fill behaviour are defined together with the plant and pumping techniques required to prepare and deliver the materials. Test techniques to define the different regimes of behaviour are identified and the variation in material properties for fills with varying pulp densities are outlined. The results indicate that high pulp density fills are stronger and have less permeability restrictions than conventional fills and that aggregate can be carried with the pulp. Thus the disadvantage of finer materials can be turned into an economic advantage. Criteria are developed for defining the type of operation suited to this Technology.

High purity alumina (HPA) is a processed, premium non-metallurgical alumina product characterised by its purity level ie 99.99 per cent (4N) or 99.999 per cent (5N). The market price, application, and performance of HPA varies widely according to its degree of purity. High purity alumina is a form of aluminium oxide (Al2O3) with growing use in LED lighting and coating on the ceramic cathode separator sheets in lithium ion batteries. This paper describes a study on producing high purity alumina from feldspar to produce HPA and potash for use as a fertiliser. The project was positive for a number of reasons. High potassium extraction (>99 per cent) was achieved in the alkali leach using sodium hydroxide as the leaching agent and full dissolution of the alkali leach residue was achieved using hydrochloric and sulfuric acid. The potential to produce a high purity alumina product via a complex but promising emerging process was assessed. The potential to extract potassium as potassium sulfate to add value to the project was also demonstrated with the test work.

Tunnels are being built around the world using TBMs and prefabricated segments or in situ concrete as linings. Clients demand high quality of these linings to guarantee a long-term stability and density of the tunnels. This paper describes the development and the use of segmental lining systems, including joints, important design criteria, installation procedures, possible mistakes and consequences, repair works and final results for different sites in Europe and around the world. The experience on these sites shows that damages may occur, if some essential aspects are not considered. These aspects include:parameters of the TBMs and back-up equipment such as fixation of jacking rams, movement of the back-up on the lining or ring reformer;parameters of the segments such as quality of moulds, quantity of reinforcement or structure of the joints; andparameters of the tunnel drive such as advance rate, ring-gap grouting or experience of the tunnel crew.All these aspects have to be considered very carefully in detail to get a good lining accepted in total.

Ausmelt Technology has a unique capability of removing the impurities, phosphorus and sulphur, from the feed materials to the process. Sulphur is removed to the gas phase almost completely because of the interactions of ore and coal in the reaction region at the top surface of the slag bath. Phosphorus is removed to the slag phase, with both basic and higher, controlled iron oxide levels in slag being achieved in the process. The significance of these features of the process relate to the production of pig iron with very low levels of these impurities for the further processing to steel, and to the treatment of high phosphorus and high sulphur raw materials. The marketability of pig iron and the raw materials are discussed in relation to this feature of Auslron.

High resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric data have been shown to optimize exploration for epithermal gold deposits in the vicinity of Charters Towers, northeastern Queensland. The radiometric data allow extrapolation of poorly outcropping geology to provide a cost-effective mapping technique, even at exploration scales (eg. 1:25,000). At a regional scale (eg. 1:100,000) the magnetic data reflect the regional tectonics and divide the area into domains for the application of different genetic models. For example: 1. the Ravenswood Batholith is characterized by multiple intrusions dating from Ordovician to Permian age. The polarity of the magnetic anomalies implies an age for the intrusions and indicates a deposit style for exploration. 2. extensional and wrench tectonics along the northern margin of the Drummond Basin are interpreted from the magnetic data and indicate favourable blocks for detailed exploration. Genetic exploration models may be tested in favourable environments by the recognition of geophysical signatures. These signatures reflect structural, lithological and alteration patterns arising from controls on ore deposits and can be applied at regional or detailed scales.

Geological hazards such as faulting, basement ridges, and zones of "thin" (< 6 m) coal have a major impact on mining economics of underground operations in Huntly Coalfield. Experience has shown that drillhole-based investigations do not yield sufficiently detailed models of the coal seam to allow management of the planning risks associated with these hazards. Consequently, operational performance is affected by unplanned costs associated with lower productivity, loss of coal reserves, and expensive strata control remedies in problem ground conditions. Huntly Coalfield is a challenging environment for acquisition of good quality seismic reflection data due to the very thick (10-85m) weathering layer. Since 1994, successful acquisition of 2D and 3D data has been achieved through a combination of careful testing of technical parameters and experimental trials prior to committing to production recording. High resolution seismic reflection (HRSR) is proving to be an investigations technique which generates accurate and reliable models of the coal seam and associated structures, such as normal faults and topography of the surface on which the coal seam rests. The HRSR technique has been applied and developed in the Okowhao Sector where Huntly East Mine is developing and extracting coal reserves. Results of a recent 3D survey demonstrate that this technique is capable of revolutionising risk management in mine planning for underground mines in structurally complicated coal deposits.

Top outlet sediments from the National Geochemical Survey of Australia have been extracted by a partial extraction method for over 50 elements including gold. The partial extraction results from this low-density survey show discrete coherent anomalies for Au in the vicinity of many of AustraliaÆs known goldfields, and in the vicinity of some minor gold occurrences. In several instances catchment outlet anomalies for Au have been recorded from areas not known to contain significant economic gold. Several large economic goldfields are shown to not produce anomalies in catchment outlet samples. A survey of overbank samples in the Swan Avon catchment of Western Australia at double the sampling density shows that low level anomalies (>1 ppb) can be traced back to source using overbank sediments. Follow-up of one of the Au anomalies at Kent River in previously regarded non-auriferous terrain (western Albany-Fraser Belt) indicates a non-economic, but perhaps geochemically significant, Au anomaly with associated pathfinders including palladium. This may indicate that further exploration of the western part of Albany Fraser Belt for Au is warranted. The combination of catchment overbank samples and partial analysis technique has been shown to be effective at locating the source of gold anomalies from initial low-density continental and regional surveys.CITATION:Mann, A, Davidson, A and de Caritat, P, 2013. Mount Isa Mines (MIM) Copper Concentrator currently utilises Agitair 120 banks for its roughing flotation circuit. Apart from a rotor change, the only other significant work completed to the Agitair banks since their installation and commissioning over 40 years ago has been a like for like refurbishment in 2016. The Agitair banks at the MIM Copper Concentrator currently utilise the Pipsa rotor design which progressively replaced the original Chile X rotor design in the 1980’s and 90’s in the copper concentrator. Since the development of the Pipsa rotors, modern rotors such as the Dorr-Oliver (DO) high shear rotors have been released to the market with proven recovery and concentrate grade improvements over previous rotor designs. The unique chemical and physical properties that can be displayed by polypropylene and its copolymer derivatives are enabling its development as a truly versatile material for water filtration. Well known applications include spiral wound cartridge filters commonly used for household water or the office drinking fountain, to pressure membranes that provide micro, ultra or nano size filtration barriers, whilst needle-felt or woven cloth filter belts or inline pressure bag cloths are well known to the hydro metallurgist and process engineer. A relatively new filtration concept that is generating interest and applications across all industries including the mining sector involves use of a unique fabric type filtering media made from polypropylene fibres. This technology not only has a vastly wider window for potential applications, it delivers an attractive cost saving alternative to the traditional sand media or diatomaceous earth type filters, along with potential benefits for integrated filtration units. This paper discusses the proven potential of the fabric media technology with examples of performance comparisons and confidence gained from full scale operating installations at mine sites and other locations.

The pyrophyilite alteration zone forms an upward flaring cone, largely hosted within a breccia body that cross-cuts the Co, Mo, and Au-rich ore shell. This alteration zone contains pyrophyllite, dumortierite and diaspore and resembles alteration occurring in some high-sulfidation deposits, but which is barren. Fluid-mineral equilibria and fluid inclusion studies indicate formation at approximately 300 ¦C from fluids dominated by steam and gases. These fluids appear highly acidic, but sulfur poor, leading to extreme base leaching within the breccia body and surrounding rocks.

A narrow (200-300m) zone of amphibolite facies metamorphic rocks underlies the Papuan ophiolite near the Musa-Kumusi divide, SW of Popondetta, Oro Province. The amphibolite rocks are bounded up-section, to the NE, by peridotite and gabbro of the ophiolite; and down-section, to the SW, by mafic greenschist, which in turn overlies blueschist facies mafic schists of the Emo Metamorphics.Amphibole compositions within the narrow contact zone show a strong chemical zonation which reflects a steep thermal gradient, with maximum temperatures >800¦C at the peridotite contact. Carbonate-hosted massive sulfide ores of the American cordillera compose a distinctive genetic class. Discordant fea-tures of occurrence together with measured high-temperatures of formation indicate their essential epigenetic character and close spatial association with centers of thermal activity during evolution of the cordillera. Their metallogenic character is complex from region to region: Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag, Pb-Zn-Ag, and Cu-Zn-Ag-Au represent extremes of composition and each may be identified with specific terranes of occurrence, notwithstand-ing an inferred common process of formation. Beyond the presence of a thermal center, other controls that may be identi-fied include apparent but obscure properties of primary perme-ability or chemistry of hosting strata, and secondary controls are imposed by stratigraphic differences in which permeability is strongly contrasted. Structures that act as channelways may be identified in some instances. Notwithstanding their intrinsic value, search for these ores is difficult and requires the solution of complex geochemical and three-dimensional geometric problems.

The blast furnace cohesive zone has a profound impact on hot metal productivity and quality, fuel consumption, operational stability and the lining life of the blast furnace. The high temperature properties of ferrous burden materials determine the configuration and location of the cohesive zone and have therefore attracted particular attention. While numerous standard testing methods are in use to assess the quality of ferrous burden materials for the blast furnace, these simple tests are generally conducted under fixed conditions, which often represent the extreme situations encountered by the burden materials in the blast furnace. Furthermore, none of these simple tests provides information on the high temperature properties of the burden materials, such as their softening and melting properties. CSIRO is equipped with a fully computerised testing facility to characterise the high temperature properties of ferrous burden materials under realistic conditions similar to those encountered in the blast furnace. This paper will first review the CSIRO softening and melting test method and then discuss the softening and melting properties of a variety of blast furnace burden materials, including sinter, pellets and lump ore, and their implications for blast furnace operation.
