This paper details how the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), as a disclosure and conduct regulator, approaches regulation of continuous disclosure, capital raising and control transactions in the mining and resources sector, and the reasons for the approach. In examining this topic the paper considers the Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code (JORC, 2004), the VALMIN Code (VALMIN Committee, 2005), the relevant ASX Listing Rules and the relevant provisions of the Corporations Act 2001 (Corporations Act). The quality of the external water source for a mineral processing plant may influence the extent to which the environmentally desirable practice of recycling of water from plant products is possible. This is particularly likely for froth flotation plants where the chemical quality of the water may affect the plantÆs performance. The quality of the external water source or the recycled water can be improved by a water treatment step, and in turn the extent of recycling which can be tolerated is able to be influenced. The quality of the external water can range from very high quality, soft water derived from melting snow, to poor quality, hard water (high levels of dissolved calcium and magnesium) from underground aquifers, and to even lower quality sea water (very high levels of dissolved species including sodium chloride). It can be noted that some underground water is more saline than ocean water as well as containing high levels of dissolved calcium and magnesium. Occasionally, a different source of water is utilised in the wet and the dry seasons. Increasingly, sewage water from cities is becoming a potential external water source with sustainability implications. If the initial quality of the external water is high, the scope for recycling of water from all the products is maximised. Such reuse or recycling of water from the products allows chemical species from oxidation of the ore and from other inputs to the process such as reagents to increase in concentration in the water returned to the plant. Such accumulation of species can have negative effects on the performance of a process such as froth flotation but instances of positive effects exist. Some reagents which are used in flotation plants such as lime or sodium carbonate also happen to be commonly used for independent water treatment plants. Hence, the flotation process may inadvertently provide some aspects of water processing. Where the quality of the water in the feed to a mineral processing plant (external water plus recycled water) is not an issue, more powerful solid-liquid separation processes can be considered to maximise the removal of water from the products and its reuse. Such processes may also have complementary benefits in a sustainable mineral industry by, for example, producing a tailing stream with a higher per cent solid value which is more suitable for safe storage on the surface or underground. This paper documents findings on the effect of water quality on the flotation process. It also considers current directions of change in the need for increased removal of water from plant products. It then considers the implications of these trends for maximisation of water recycling by such operations.

This paper reviews the issues of mining machinery automation with special emphasis on underground applications. Automation is desirable because it offers the following advantages: ò increased safety by reducing human exposure to hazards of underground mining; ò higher productivity; and ò reduced wear of equipment. In spite of these advantages and in spite of numerous attempts over the past several decades, mining automation has been a difficult proposition, partly because no two mining operations are exactly alike and these operations are carried out in an unpredictable environment. This is the main difference between automation in factories and in mines and that is why mining automation has been lagging so far behind factory automation. Automation is possible only when the machine 'knows' its workspace. In a factory, this workspace can be 'described' to the machine because it is sufficiently controlled. In a mine, the environment undergoes continuous change and the only way the machine can 'know' its workspace is through real-time sensing.

The expansive, open cut iron-ore mines in Western Australia typically experience few days of rain per annum, often amounting to less than 250 mm. Unlike mines where rainfall is frequent, they may be less prepared for extreme rainfall events. Such events can cause erosion, flooding and sedimentation, drainage alteration, spoil and stock heaps wetting and effect slope stability. Such impacts may threaten personnel safety, infrastructure, and production. The CRATER (‘Climate Related Adaptation from Terrain Evaluation Results’) framework collates and interprets a mine’s pre-existing data and semi-quantitative information to assess vulnerability to, and ultimately plan to avoid or minimise, flood-related hazard to infrastructure, people, downtime, environment and revenue. Outputs assist decision makers to design investment strategies for minimising mining operations’ vulnerability to climate. Previously developed for smaller, wetter mines in Queensland’s coal region, the outputs provide a hot-spot map, fault tree analysis and an assessment of the mine’s capacity to adapt. The multicriteria evaluation (MCE) within a geographic information system (GIS), equally suits iron-ore mines’ siteconditions (elevation, slope, drainage, soil and vegetation) to identify critical inundation areas. Hotspot results provide target zones for in-depth fault-tree analysis that, in turn, present a range of sitespecific adaptation options. Rainfall-intensity and the number of rain days since the 1970s have increased over central and eastern parts of the Pilbara Region. While tropical cyclones may become less frequent, they are projected to increase in intensity. Although some parts of the Hamersley Ranges receive more than 500 mm per annum, rainfall in the Pilbara is generally very low. Therefore, experience of the impacts of extreme rainfall events in the constantly changing topography of Western Australia’s iron ore region may be sparse. Minimising potential effects can be proactively assisted using CRATER.

The Treasurer, the Hon Wayne Swan, has nominated ‘maximising our advantages’ from ‘Mining Boom Mark II’ as the focus of the 2011/2012 Australian Budget. Australia therefore requires a bolder and better integrated economic reform agenda if it is to convert current strong demand for mineral commodities into lasting prosperity that benefits all Australians. Lasting prosperity, well past 2012, will only be achieved if Australia can effectively reverse a decade-long deterioration in the minerals industry productivity performance due largely to capacity constraints that inhibit growth. This requires improving the efficiency of energy networks, transport infrastructure, water markets, health and education services, access to skilled people and by streamlining costly, inefficient project approvals’ processes. The common thread that holds this economic fabric together is the importance of having the right people using the most appropriate technology within the correct policy framework.In December 2010, employment in the minerals sector stood at 187 200; 21 per cent higher than one year earlier, 15 per cent higher than the industry employment peak prior to the global financial crisis in 2008 and 14 per cent greater than anticipated by industry modelling published in 2008. Managers and professionals make up approximately 15 per cent of the total workforce, yet minerals-related higher education programs (mining engineering, metallurgy and geoscience) continue to be chronically underfunded, requiring direct industry subsidies of more than $25 M over the last decade. Also, the publicly-funded Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector continues to fail the industry in the delivery of quality training programs. Importantly, the industry is a key driver of economic activity in regional and remote Australia and is the largest source of private sector employment for Indigenous Australians who comprise up to a quarter of employees in certain locations.This presentation looks at what our industry and country need to achieve to ensure we have the right people for the challenges ahead. **This is an abstract only. Evaluation of the construction method used for the pedestrian underpass construction at Ipswich Road, Brisbane, Australia is presented in this paper. The pedestrian underpass was constructed through the existing railway embankment between Harrogate and O’Keefe Streets on the eastern side of Ipswich Road. This underpass construction is part of the CLEM7 tunnel project (formerly known as the North-South Bypass Tunnel) which is the longest toll road in Australia at a total length of 6.8 km. The jacked box construction technique was initially identified as a preferred option during the tender and concept design phases. However at the final design stage, the cut and cover technique was selected as this method can reduce the construction time and cost significantly. The design and construction teams effectively managed the challenges, complexities and risks associated with undertaking cut and cover tunnel through the existing heavily utilised rail embankment. The on-site construction time for the underpass using the cut and cover technique was reduced to less than 42 hours.

"The Jaguar project is relatively unique in that it was evaluated, financed, built and operated to completion within the last ten years, providing the opportunity to holistically review and reconcile expectations against the actual outcomes. It is a case study that allows wider conclusions to be drawn with respect to the risks and opportunities involved with project evaluation and execution.Jaguar is located in the Leonora Mining District of Western Australia and was commissioned in mid-2007 as an underground accessed, single high-grade volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposit with an on-site concentrator, producing copper and zinc concentrates exported via the Port of Geraldton to South-East Asian markets.The feasibility study (FS) had several iterations (JML, 2005a); the last dated July 2005 was specifically targeted to secure project funding, and summarised the reserves-only portion of the resource and its planned exploitation. The commissioning of the mine was the transition for the owner Jabiru Metals NL from junior explorer to producer and the project was the dominant asset of the company.Jaguar operated through several significant deviations from the linear project plan set out in the FS, including the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), a corporate takeover and disruption to the mine plan from the onset of material geotechnical issues. Whilst the GFC or mining disruption were not specifically predicted in the FS or peer reviews, the generic effects of the events were assessed in the project risk assessment and they influenced subsequent management decisions. In parallel to the internal project-specific risks, the short planned life of Jaguar was a risk to the continuation of the corporate entity which was being addressed by significant investment into brownfields exploration to extend or replicate the project, and ultimately added value such that attracted a corporate takeover.Holistically, the project delivered the returns predicted in the FS, but in a much different guise than was expected. This paper will describe the reality of operations compared with the study predictions and expectations through the perspective of the project and corporate risk assessment.CITATION:Jacobs, R, 2016. This paper looks at the design of the Bentayga raisebore with subsequent back analysis using a LiDAR survey. A search for LiDAR raisebore assessment publications shows little work has been done on this subject. The paper examines the empirical design and RS2 modelling assessment with the bored condition. The high resolution of the LiDAR enabled mapping of weak structures that were located on the geotechnical investigation hole the orientations of which could not be determined. In addition, the scan showed were water ingress was occurring, potential stress overbreak and structural controls on stability. The LiDAR results were able to confirm no additional support work such as a shotcrete liner is necessary. The LiDAR results have been analysed in one metre increments as volume of overbreak against the empirical stability criteria (McCracken & Stacey 1989). The future use of LiDAR mapping over a range of rock mass conditions will provide quantification of the established empirical assessment improving its reliability. It is also a useful and accurate tool to monitor long term stability of a raisebore due to stress change or ore pass due to wear.

Two major issues are to be addressed in the Copper Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines Limited. The first of these is the need to increase concentrator flotation capacity to increase copper recovery, while the second is the need to reduce the iron sulphide dilution to meet future smelting requirements. Extra capacity in the cleaner and retreatment sections of the concentrator have been identified as key target areas, with additional copper recovery of at least one per cent identified from plant trials. Extensive pilot plant tests have been undertaken to evaluate the performance of the Jameson cell compared to conventional mechanical cell and column circuits. This work has shown that Jameson cells present an opportunity to achieve the desired grade and capacity specifications at lower capital cost than available alternatives. This paper outlines metallurgical results of work undertaken in the Copper Concentrator, together with a summary of pertinent Jameson cell operating parameters investigated during the period.

More than ten seafloor massive sulfides (SMSs), which tend to be enriched in Au and Ag with varying amounts of Zn, Pb and Ba, have been reported in Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) including the Jade hydrothermal field in the Izena cauldron Okinawa, theSunrise deposit in Myojin knoll Izu-Ogasawara, and other active deposits found in the past 20 years. From the fiscal year 2008 some universities in Japan will begin development of sensing devices to delineate surface distributions of known SMSs and to find new ones. The devices would be deployed by an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) or remotely-operated underwater vehicle (ROV) later in active hydrothermal fields and potential areas in the EEZ. On the other hand, different laboratories are planning to research and evaluate SMSs with state-of-the-art methods such as the benthic multi-coring system and geophysical devices to collect information in deeper parts of the SMSs. In this session recent projects on exploration and evaluation of SMSs with some new trials including geophysical and geological surveys in Japan will be reported. Underground coal gasification (UCG) is a promising process for obtai- ning energy from coal, which is either unmineable with current mining techno- logy or uneconomic to recover, using conventional methods, in the present energy market situation. There are several coal fields, which could become new coal reserves, if the UCG process were successfully applied. In the 1960's Japanese researchers made a number of basic studies and field tests into UCG, although not all of them produced favourable results. This paper reviews Japanese research on UCG. This includs basic studies into coal gasification using a small, tube reactor fed by air and oxygen, and also large scale model stu- dies(reactor size of 8.Om x 2.4m x 1.5 m). Field test results from Akabira colliery in Hokkaido and a feasibility study of power generation using UCG from a coal field in Hokkaido are also Presented.

Formation of either sodium jarosite or lead jarosite from concentrated chloride solutions containing small concentrations of sulphate has been demonstrated. Sodium jarosite is precipitated at 95-100°C from FeC13-FeCI2-NaCI-PbCI2 solutions to which was added Na2SO4 or Li2SO4 in amounts greater than 0.05 M. In the absence of alkali metal ions capable of forming jarosites, lead jarosite was precipitated from either FeCI3-PbCI2 or FeCI3-FeCI2-LiCI-PbCI2 solutions to which had been added small amounts of sulphate. Many of the factors affecting jarosite precipitation from chloride solution have been elucidated, and the most critical were sulphate concentration and initial pH. Concentrations of HCI in excess of O. I M essentially suppressed the production of jarosite in chloride media. Alkali jarosite, precipitated in the presence of dissolved lead, incorporates a small amount of this metal into the alkali jarosite lattice. Small but significant amounts of copper can also be incorporated into alkali jarosite and the amount is further increased in the presence of lead. Other divalent base metals such as Zn, Cd or Ni are not significantly precipitated. Sulphate control in either FeCI3 or FeCl3-NaCI leaching systems could likely be maintained by jarosite precipitation provided that the acid concentration of the solution was low.

In a previous paper the writer dealt -with the jasper bar formations and their relationship to the structural geology of older pre-Cambrian rocks in the goldfields districts of Western Australia (24). He has pointed out in this ahd other papers that jasper bars, or banded iron formations, banded hematite or ,magnetite quartzites, jaspilites and related banded ferruginous or non-ferruginous cherts, occur in abundan'ce in the Older Greenstone Series of Western Australia (22), (24), (26). They are considered to represent special forms of banded ferruginous sediments, and are usually fpund in the field interbedded with more or less metamorphosed pasaltic 01' andesitic lavas and tuffs, now amphibolites, together with occasional thin bands of normal pelitic sediments, which go to make up a large proportion of the Older Greenstones in thfs State (26).Great thicknesses of fiat-bedded ]:landed ferruginous cherts are also found associated with cherty' carbonate rocks; quartzites, shales and thin-bedded dolomite whicIi constit'ute the Nullagine (Pl'oterozoic) system in the northwest of Western Australia. In the Hamersley Range district these banded ferruginous chert beds are the hosts of important deposits of blue amphibole asbestos.In the paper mentioned above brief reference was> made to the importance, of geological structure in relation to economic geology, particularly in the goldfields regions of Western Australia, and it was shown that jasper bars may have an important role in the study of 'the structural geology of many of these regions. Of possibly more immediate economic importance is the part that these rocks play, both directly and indirectly, as host rocks for mineral deposits-the chief of Which are gold, iron ores, blue asbestos, and manganese ores. The blue asbestos bearing banded iron formations mentioned above are confined to the younger pre-Cambrian Nullagine formations. They have been described in detail elsewhere (23). In this paper it is proposed to discuss the economic geology of the jasper bars found in the older pre-Cambrian series.The jasper 'bars have in themselves little or no intrinsic value except perhaps some of the more highly coloured and banded varieties which may be utilised for ornamental and decorative purposes. Probably the best known of such varieties is the so-called "marble bar;" a belt of, strikingly coloured banded chert occurring just south and west of the famous town of that name (see Fig. 1t). This consists of a hard, very fine, even-grained rock with alternate individual stripes varying from the thickness of a sheet of paper up to an inch or more in width, and ranging in colour from clear white to yellow, from various shades of pink to brilliant...

In the introduction to a recent paper dealing with, the relationships of magnetite and hematite in the banded iron formations or "jasper bars" of the Western Australian pre-Cambrian(17)t the author made a brief mention of these interesting rocks, of the principal series in which they occur and of a few of the rock and mineral types to be found within them.He drew attention to the essential shnilarity of these Western Australian banded iron formations to those of the pre-Cambrian of such other countries as the United States Lake Superior region, Sweden, South Russia, India, South Africa and Brazil, and gave a brief summary of his views as to the origin of the formations in Western Australia. Furthermore he stated that the banded iron formations have proved of considerable direct economic importance in the goldfields and other' regions of Western Australia, and he referred to the assistance they have provided the field geologist in geological mapping and the determination of geological structures.It is in elaboration of this last statement that the present paper has been written. In the following pages will be found some examples of the use to which the jasper bars have been put in the determination of the geological structure of critical areas in the goldfields of the State.Firstly, however, it may be as well to recapitulate the features of interest in these rocks. The true jasper bars or banded iron formations including the types jaspilite, banded hematite quartzite and banded magnetite quartzite or chert, together with their higher grade metamorphic derivatives such as banded magnetite-gruneri~ quartzites, magnetitegrunerite schists, fayalite ,and hedenbergite bearing handed magnetitegrunerite quartz rocks and' to 'a lesser extent magnetite-hypersthene grunerite quartz rocks, are abundant in the older series of the Western Australian pre-Cambrian. They are best developed in the older Greenstone or Kalgoorlie series of the goldfields districts, interbedded with metamorphosed basic lavas, tuffs and sediments. The mineralogy andpetrology of these rocks, the history of their metamorphism and their origin have been discusseq elsewhere in some detail by the author(19), (20). In one of the papers(20) it was clearly demonstrated that in the light of the true facts the old silicified shear zone theory of the origin of the jasper bars is quite untenable and that the formations undoubtedly represent sedimentary horizons as was recently pointed out by McKinstry(14).It has also been shown that banded ferruginous cherts, quartzites and cherty carbonate rocks of much lower metamorphic grade are well developed...

THE nature of the ore deposit of the Broken Hill line of lode is such that it can be broadly divided into two the calcitic and siliceous ore bodies. The principal minerals occurring in these ores are: Galena, sphalerite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, calcite, rhodonite, garnets, feldspar, fluospar, quartz.Whilst these minerals persist in both classes of ore, the following typical analyses of Broken Hill South Limited ore bodies will give some indication of the disposition with regard to each:

A considerable debate has arisen regarding the best route for the beneficiation of iron ore. Supporters of jigging technology claim that although the technology is old, due to recent advances in jig control and a better understanding of the separation processes within jigs, it offers significant advantages over dense medium separation, especially in terms of reduced capital and operating costs and simplicity of design. Supporters of dense medium separation claim that this technology is proven to provide the best possible separation and that the gain in efficiency over the life of the plant, compared to that of a jig, will more than offset any differences in capital or operating costs. The truth is that both viewpoints are valid and that the choice is ultimately determined by specific characteristics of the ore being treated. Factors that need to be taken into account in deciding upon the correct option include the size/density distribution of the ore to be treated, the different size fractions which must be treated (lumpy or fines), differences in yield at grade, plant layout and capital and operating costs. Each of these factors will be discussed in detail and a case study for both lumpy and fines will be presented.

The whole layer of material lying on top of the jig screen.Ragging. The layer of denser material lying immediately above the jig screen, which is too coarse to pass through this screen and is confined horizontally by the cells of the top grid.Ore Column. The layer of ore pulp between the ragging and the top-water.Top Water. The water, carrying fine material in suspension, which flOiWS over the surface of the jig bed.Hutch Water. The water added to the jig below the screen. (Except for the water discharged with the hutch concentrate, the "hutch-water" eventually becomes "top-water.")Feed Water. The water in the ore pulp fed to the jig.(This water becomes part of the "top-water.")Pulsion. The period of the jigging cycle during which the water is moving upwards relative to the particles in the jig bed.

The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) has recently commercialised a variety of new products for the mining industry through its commercial division (JKTech). Although the products cover a wide variety of niche applications, a common thread runs through the Research, Development and Commercialisation (RD and C) process: they have emerged from industry sponsored projects. The development history of JigScan (a control system for the mineral-processing jig) is a good example of how this RD and C process works in practice. It involves building mutually beneficial partnerships between the JKMRC and the mining industry through several incremental projects with one or more industry sponsors. All research projects have objectives to demonstrate but these projects also feature a degree of product development to actively encourage and support the longer-term vision for the mature commercial technology. The process to develop JigScan as a commercial product worked because each incremental project recovered costs, provided an immediate benefit for the sponsor and contributed to the longer-term development objectives of the JKMRC. Integrating development with research need not greatly increase the cost of research objectives generally provides a more robust research outcome for the sponsor and greatly reduces the overall development risk. Successful projects often feature industry mentors actively participating in the RD and C process. Additional funding from government appears to be easier to obtain when such close partnerships with industry are apparent. Finally, the business structure of the JKMRC within the University of Queensland ensures that commercial outcomes, developed within the contractual arrangements of the underlying RD and C projects, are used to benefit and support further RD and C with the mining industry. This paper tells the story of the development and commercialisation of JigScan, and draws conclusions about this kind of RD and C model.

On January 21, 1986, a methane ignition and subsequent mine fire occurred in the under- ground workings of the Jim Walter Resources, Incorporated No. 3 Mine located near Adger, Alabama. The fire, which began on a longwall face and eventually spread into the adjacent gob area, could not be extinguished directly and raged out of control for several hours. Sealing operations were begun underground by Mine Rescue Teams and the fire area was successfully sealed with the mine able to resume production in about one month. The No. 3 Mine liberated over sixteen million cubic feet of methane in twenty-four hours. The operation was unique, in that, the successful underground sealing of a fire in an ultra-gassy mine had not been attempted or com- pleted for several years. Maps and charts are included to give explanation of the typical data used to manage the recovery effort.
