It has been identified that particulate matter in the form of suspended solids and bed load has the ability to adsorb heavy metals. Each year Ranger Uranium Mines Pty Ltd (RUM) identifies potential danger areas which could become major sediment sources during the wet season. Methods of suppressing sediment uptake such as hydromulching and coating areas with Poly Vinyl Acetate (PVA) glue are used. Other methods of reducing the sediment load after uptake such as diversion bunds, filters across drains, stone filters, minor sumps and settling ponds are also used. The 1983/84 wet season saw drain sediment loads reduced to acceptable levels before the water reached the outside environment. Studies to qualify and quantify flows from minor drains are still underway.

In the human body, the balance between heat production and heat loss is continuously being disturbed, either by changes in metabolic rate (work being the most influential) or by changes in the external environment (heat stress), which alters heat loss. These changes in body temperature can adversely affect the function of body systems and organs. As a result, heat production or heat loss processes are triggered in order to restore normal body temperature (36 - 37¦C). If the heat generating systems of the body are excessive or the environment hostile then the capacity of the body to maintain thermal homeostasis is exceeded and can lead to a serious threat to health, or even death. This health deficit can severely affect an individualÆs capacity to work optimally; the end result is both poor productivity and health. Strategies to minimise or eliminate this effort will benefit both the health of workers and the productivity of companies. The principal strategies to reduce the effects of the environment on workers are: engineering interventions: to improve environmental conditions and reduce heat stress; and a comprehensive working in heat protocol: with provisions to identify risk situations and procedures to be adopted in relation to these. The above points will be discussed in detail with practical and simple strategies proposed to combat the deleterious effects of heat in mining.

The total cost of horizontal development can be minimised by optimising the cost of each of the component operations (eg drilling, blasting, etc). Component costs should not be minimised. To optimise blasting results (ie the mean advance per round, muckpile characteristics and overbreak), operators need to optimise the blast design and drilling and blasting procedures. The costs of pulling extremely long (say >6 m) rounds, producing unnecessarily fine fragmentation, and minimising overbreak are excessively high. Operators should continually consider how they can shorten the cycle period by saving time at the face. To enable it to be matched to the pertinent rock properties, the blast design needs to be based on as much relevant experience as possible. To develop the most valid correlation between blasting results and blast design, the latter must be implemented carefully and accurately, but without sacrificing speed excessively. The total cost can often be reduced by using: 1. computer-controlled jumbos (to reduce the period and cost of drilling and to increase drilling accuracy); 2. larger diameter (51 mm to 64 mm) and longer (4.5 m to 6 m) blastholes; 3. at least three large diameter ( ¦89 mm) relief holes that are 0.2 m to 0.3 m longer than the blastholes; 4. explosive products that are selected on the basis of proven reliability and overall cost efficiency rather than price; and5. stemming (to increase the amount of effective work done by each kilogram of explosive and, hence, to reduce the powder factor and possibly the number of blastholes and the costs of drilling and initiation). Non-perimeter blastholes should be charged with ANFO or a bulk emulsion of established performance. Upper perimeter blastholes should be charged with a bulk explosive with a much lower effective density. But where geology varies considerably, greatest control over overbreak could possibly be achieved with the versatile pre-assembled charge shown in Figure 1. This paper presents numerous potential ways in which the total cost of development can be minimised. It concentrates on recommending blast design features and the safe, rapid, cost-effective implementation of designs.

Water is the main medium for removing impurities from iron ore during wet processing to achieve a higher quality product. However, there is a substantial increase in freshwater consumption due to an increase in demand from the following two factors: in the past 55 years the world population has doubled from 3 to 7.5 billion and crude steel production has increased five times from approximately 350 to 1662 Mt/a (IISI, 2008). Furthermore, social development in developing countries exacerbates water consumption making freshwater an increasingly valuable resource with an average distribution of 70 per cent for agriculture, 20 per cent for industry and only ten per cent for domestic consumption (Hourtolle, 2005; OECD, 2009). Rapidly changing regulations over the access and preservation of water across the world indicates the growing importance of this issue, so the mining industry must adapt to this continual change and must be committed to increasing the efficiency of water usage.Tailings dams receive most of the water used by the process plant. In arid regions where evaporation is high and availability of water low or non-existent, technical solutions other than the conventional tailings dam, such as thickened and/or filtered tailings, exist to optimise the recovery of water and reduce the need for external water consumption. However, these solutions present additional challenges, such as energy consumption and transportation from the process plant to the ultimate storage area.This paper considers a range of alternatives covering thickening and filtering, transportation and storage, water return, closure and rehabilitation. Mining projects in the future will be more affected by the rising cost in water and tighter regulations in accessing water and energy. Good tailings management can contribute significantly to reducing the dependence on these two key commodities (water and electricity), improving the resilience of iron ore projects especially in arid regions and areas with high competition for water.CITATION:Vuillier, C and A Roshdieh, A, 2017. A review is made of the limited published experience of the effects of cemented fill in flotation.A general approach is adopted in listing and discussing possible sources of, and reasons for, ore contamination by cemented fill, together with basic, fundamental approaches to minimizing this contamination. These approaches involve basic mining design, effect of fill placement density, optimization of curing time and of cement content, variation of fill particle grading, use of flocculants and of pozzolans, fill placement and dewatering, and or blasting and handling practice.

Gold rooms represent a high security area and preventing theft is a challenging task. Where gravity concentrates or high value unit intermediate products are present, particular and specific security procedures must be put in place. This paper describes the development and implementation which reflects best practice in gold room security. Procedures involving key holder systems, key locks, swipe cards and double locks preventing any one person having access to the gold room, including specific procedures for gravity gold concentrators, will be addressed. The use of monitoring and how to deal with alarms and potential hold ups will be reviewed. The use of cameras and archival DVD recorders is common in gold rooms. The use of electronic surveillance, movement detectors, seismic monitors and the two person policy and gold room entry procedures are described, including how to deal with visitors. The importance of confidentiality regarding smelting and gold pick-up days, plus strategies employed to minimise storing large quantities of gold on site will be presented. The role of metallurgical accounting in providing quality auditable information and the minimum standards of record keeping required is discussed. The role of the Gold Squad will be outlined. Regular auditing and risk analysis and several case studies are cited where security was deficient or improved.

The Rocklands copper project is a multilode, iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) + cobalt mineralised system located in the Eastern Fold Belt of the Mt Isa Inlier. Rocklands orebodies cover a range of oxidation zones from oxide, to supergene and primary. Each zone contains different economic minerals of interest. The supergene zones contain significant amounts of native copper and the primary zones are dominated by chalcopyrite. The juxtaposition of these oxidation zones and minerals make it an interesting mineralisation system.Current mine production sampling collects a nominal 3 kg drill chip sample from a 1 m composite, RC drilled interval. A site specific sampling procedure was needed to quantify introduced sampling error when taking grade control samples. Due to oxidation and mineralogical variation in ore zones we needed to develop a practically achievable sampling methodology that ensures minimum sample mass and sample error requirements are achieved to ensure ‘representative’ samples for all ore types.These issues are planned to be resolved using an experimentally derived method using principles from the Theory of Sampling. This method uses an experimental calibration of parameters K and a for Gy’s fundamental sampling error formula using a modified 32-piece sampling tree experiment to compile sampling nomograms for the primary and supergene ores. This paper demonstrates the process undertaken to improve the quality and standard of existing mine production sampling procedures at the Rocklands operation.Results indicate a sample mass of 5 kg for RC drill chips is appropriate for both the primary and supergene ores to achieve a fundamental error below 0.01 or 10 per cent relative error, which is slightly higher than the existing sampling protocol of 3 kg. An additional experiment is recommended to compile sampling nomograms using the exact laboratory comminution and mass reduction stage information to assess the use of a 3 kg sample. The results also indicate no changes are required to existing sampling protocols when sampling RC drill chips in primary and supergene ore at Rocklands.Sampling nomogram results also provide a useful ‘rule of thumb’ reference guide to other mining and exploration companies to help understand minimum sample mass requirements and sampling error during exploration drilling, resource evaluation and mining production stages when targeting similar IOCG mineralised systems. A sample mass of 5 kg is recommended when RC drilling similarly IOCG mineralised prospects and deposits in the Cloncurry area. Future test work is recommended when additional open cuts become active as well as including resource drilling drill core to provide better three-dimensional sample representivity.CITATION:Hawtin, M G, 2017. At the outset I want to thank you for inviting a representative of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa to address you on the subject of mining and its future at this, the 13th Congress of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions. It is indeed a pleasure and an honour to be here. As many of you will recall, four years ago I, as the then President of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, had the privilege of hosting and welcoming you to the 12th Congress, the third such congress hosted by South Africa. The late Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, President of the 1930 Congress - the first to be held in South Africa - in his opening address foresaw the mining industry as "the most potent factor in spreading the benefits of civilisation over the sub-continent." We have come a long way since those halcyon days but, as I noted four years ago, it still remains true that mines have been, and will continue to be, the missionaries of development in many, if not most, of the Third World countries. I have been asked to address you on the subject of "mining" and to let my imagination roam widely so that delegates can leave the congress with a broader vision than they brought on arrival. It is a tall order and in my attempt to fulfil it I ask you to cast your minds back 120 years to a sultry, rustic day when the first diamond was discovered in South Africa at the now famous town of Kimberley. At that time the South African economy, predominantly pastoral, was still at subsistence level. Almost overnight the ensuing diamond rush turned the then British- owned northern Cape Colony's semi-desert scene into a hive of mining activity, every prospector bent on making his instant fortune. It was very little different, I am sure, to the gold rushes that hit California in 18+8, Australia in 1851, New Zealand in the 1860s. and the Yukon in the 1890s.

The overall success of a mining operation is directly impacted by the reliability and availability of mining equipment. Heavy-duty vehicles such as excavators and haul trucks are used for conveying of bulk material and improving such assets’ availability helps reduce costs, increase throughputs and improve safety (Ravande, 2022). If a mining operation’s key performance indicators (KPIs) are tied to operational performance, then overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) is an essential metric to track progress and to identify areas of improvement.

There were three major incentives for developing this mining system. The first was the prospect of high ultimate recovery of the orebody. The target is 100 per cent recovery. Also the proposed stoping layout appeared to offer significant advantages in development and production costs. Finally, extensive subsidence above the northern end of the orebody could have disturbed permanent surface installations and jeopardised a possible future open cut. The full implications of this ambitious strategy were not apparent in the early years. Now, after 12 years of production the benefits are being realised and they can be weighed against the costs. Probably the most interesting result which comes from this analysis is the significance of cutoff grades and dilution factors in balancing mining and filling rates.

Innovative mining and blasting techniques were demanded at the Richmont Mines, Francoeur Mine in Quebec, Canada, by a narrow, shallowly dipping high grade gold ore body. The ore body being mined occurs as a thin tabular deposit varying in thickness between 1.5 and 3.7 metres, and dipping at 36¦. The mine proposed experimenting with open stoping techniques using small diameter drill-holes. The hangingwall required progressive, full face rockbolting after each production blast, utilising a specially manufactured machine which provided access to the hangingwall for both scaling and bolting. Blasted material is mucked from the stope by scraper and hoisted directly to surface without benefit of primary crushing.

Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company Limited operates one of the largest producing gold mines in the world. The annual production of 76 tons of gold from 12 million tons of ore treated is obtained mainly from underground sources. Daily some 6.6 km of stope face is blasted and 41 tons of explosives is used to break the rock. The mine employs 45 000 men of whom 35 000 work underground. The company operates nine large vertical shaft systems of which seven extend more than 2000 m below surface and an eighth, currently being sunk, will bottom at 3700 m below surface.

During the last two decades, restrictions on access to land for mineral exploration and development in Australia have intensified. State and Federal legislation relating to Aboriginal land rights, national parks, marine parks, wilderness areas and other conservation areas, the surface rights of farmers in New South Wales and Western Australia, national, State and world heritage, urban developments and acquisition of land by governments for other purposes have all placed limits on mineral exploration and mine development activity. More than 20% of Australia's land area is now either unavailable for mineral exploration or available only under severe constraints. Access to this land is denied at a significant economic cost to the Australian community. There have been few attempts to quantify this cost. More importantly these restrictions have developed on an ad hoc basis promoted by single interest government departments often with little regard for rational land use planning. The mining industry has embraced the community's conservation ethic and accepted that conservation areas should be set aside and that within those areas mineral activity should be restricted. In some cases the restrictions on exploration near areas of outstanding scientific, historical, archeological or scenic importance may amount to an effective prohibition. The industry has vigorously opposed the exclusion of mineral activity in conservation areas on purely emotive grounds, unsupported by scientific evidence and in disregard of land use potential, consideration of multiple use potential or consultation with existing or potential land users likely to be effected.

As an environmental "pollutant", noise is different. For one thing, it is localised (as opposed to transfrontier) and, for another, relatively low levels can trigger very strong human reaction. The reactions, which are annoyance-based, range from mild to violent and do not always correlate well with the levels experienced. This paper draws on technical aspects of noise to consider control and control principles and balances them with the subjective nature of the perceptions and reactions. It is critical to bear in mind that health effects resulting from noise are secondary to the primary human reaction. It is also important to appreciate that annoying noise levels are usually well below those which cause hearing loss. Large mines tend to be remote from cities and towns and the country surrounding such mine sites is often inhospitable. In general, residences near large mines are committed for use by mine personnel and annoyance from mining noise would be rare. Noise problems at long term operations are often a result of secondary activity or land use. As a pioneer mining community develops, secondary and service industries may be established and a township created. With changes in way of life, the perception of problems also changes. Therefore, it is never too early to plan for noise abatement, particularly because noise is only one of a number of environmental and community concerns. Ihny environmental problems are associat- ed with development or expansion of smaller open cut facilities such as hardrock quarries. There is an ever-present need to reduce product cost by mining or quarrying deposits close to the end user and many local authorities have to operate quarries for undertaking their civil engineering responsibilities.

The Palmer River rises in the Windsor Tablelands area of the Paleozoic Hodgkinson Basin, 110 kilometres northwest of Cairns. It flows west across the Palmerville Fault and Proterozoic Dargalong Metamorphics to the Mitchell River. East of the Palmerville Fault, its course lies immediately south of the onlapping Mesozoic Laura Basin conglomerates, sandstones and siltstones.Gold occurs in quartz reefs in the Hodgkinson rocks of the Maytown District, in narrow quartz veins in the Dargalong Metamorphics, in the basal conglomerates of the Mesozoic, and more importantly, in alluvial bars within the Palmer River.

Although the last decade has seen the growth of many new licencing and approval requirements for the exploration and mining industries, there remains in each State of Australia and the Northern Territory a predominant "Mining Act" containing provisions for the grant of exploration and mining tenements. What then are the rights and duties of tenement holders either by virtue of a Mining Act or through other approval and licencing mechanisms? What rights and duties does a person acquire when he is granted an exploration licence or a mining lease? In this paper I will attempt to cover these types of questions using in particular examples from New South Wales. I will also refer to a range of other subordinate approvals and licences which today's society requires and the need for ethics and recognition of liabilities.
