Iron ore tailings typically containing 40 to 50 per cent Fe can be beneficiated to iron ore products containing 54 to 60 per cent Fe. The impurities are comprised of clay, quartz, cristabolite and TiO2. Goethite and hematite are also present. At high concentrations of 55–60 wt% solids, the tailings displayed high yield stress and viscosity and cannot be pumped over long distances. Composite additives comprising of NaOH, phosphate-based additives and sodium metasilicate are found to reduce the viscosity and yield stress very significantly by a few orders of magnitude. The yield stress of 100 Pa can be reduced to almost zero. At this state, dilution of the tailings with its process water to 40 per cent solids causes the coarse and high-density iron ore particles to separate from the colloidal fractions located in the supernatant after a few minutes of sedimentation. Separation by decantation produces a sediment with an Fe content of 54 per cent from tailings with 47 per cent Fe. Another tailings sample with 48 per cent Fe was beneficiated to greater than 57 per cent Fe using NaOH-metasilicate-polyphosphate additives and employing an additional washing step. The use of other composite additives, NaOH and polyphosphates, increased beneficiated product Fe content to greater than 60 per cent from the same tailings. With the current iron ore spot price of more than US$180 per tonne, the cost of this treatment process even including a desalination step, if necessary, is relatively insignificant. This study has given tailings an economic value that should be exploited as soon as possible.

SITUATED in the county of Manchcster, in Northern Eyre's Peninsula, the Iron Knob ore-deposits form the basis of the industry. These deposits are connected by the Iron Knob tramway to the port of Whyalla, aal miles distant, on the western shore of Speneer Gulf,and to-day another tramway is under construction to link up with the same port, a second group of iron ore leases known as Iron Baron, which is situated 18 miles south of Iron Knob. Fig. 1 indicates the geographical relationship of these three places, Iron Knob, Iron Baron, and Whyalla, which together comprise this field of the company's activities.

When a joint venture is established between a major and a minor, the co-venturers often have a number of divergent interests; the major may have put up significantly more capital into the project and will want to protect its investement; the major may have more financial resources and be more readily to commit capital to the project; the major may have more technical resources and expertise to provide to the project; the major may have other competing demands for its capital; the minor may be relying on rapid development of the project as its sole source of cash flow. Successful joint ventures arise when the co-venturers understand each others' interests and attempt to satisfy these interests. This could be achived by having a clear process and timetable for development of the project coupled with clear rules for distribution of income, the commitment of capital to the project and the provision of inter-company services. If divergent interests are either regulated clearly or eliminated, both co-venturers are more likely to seek common objectives in the joint venture with less scope for conflict. This paper, written from the perspective of a major, examines means of establishing successful joint ventures between majors and minors.

"The Australian mining industries approach to life-of-mine planning has improved considerably in recent decades. It now needs to be matched by, and embedded in, mining governance systems that utilise a comprehensive whole-of-mine-life approach within a jurisdictional, industry and regional regime rather than just focusing on specific impacts in isolation. The need for a more comprehensive approach is supported by the many mining legacies, from historic, recent and some operating mine sites around Australia. There are sites that are leaving enduring environmental, community and public health impacts that are yet to be accurately assessed. While a number of these sites in Australia are estimated to be more than 50 000, this is probably an underestimation, with a lack of data and different state-based approaches complicating attempts to quantify mining legacies as a national issue. Qualitative assessments about the extent and nature of mining legacy impacts on nature and communities across Australia are also required if we are to understand and avoid ongoing and future mining legacies.This paper commences with an exploration of mining legacies as an umbrella term for previously mined, abandoned, orphan, derelict or neglected sites. This is followed by a discussion of the current status of mining legacies as an Australia-wide issue, contrasting the Australian response with overseas examples. Common themes from past workshops are explored recognising that mining legacies are a growing public policy issue and identifying key ingredients for a successful response. Supporting this, and based on national data which re-enforces the need for action, is the changing scale and intensity of mining in Australia that, while lowering costs for mine operators, increases the liability that may eventually fall to the state if mine sites are not rehabilitated effectively. Though a national issue, mining is a state and territory responsibility, so the current approach to mining legacies is then examined state-by-state. Given the widespread application and recent changes to bonds and levies in Western Australia (WA) and the Northern Territory (NT) the merits of both are examined with reference to specific case studies. Despite the current division of responsibility and diversity of approaches, however, mining legacies remain a significant and growing problem with a recognised need and repeated call for cooperation and coordination at a national and international level. The mining industry views with the utmost concern, legislative or administrative action that inherently reduces the scope for exploration activity. Is there any basis for this concern in relation to Victoria? This paper will outline the role of the Department of Minerals and Energy and the main features of legislative provisions affecting exploration effort. The practical difficulties that confront the Department and explorers alike will be examined. The importance of industry representation to influence the direction that policy and legislative review might take, will be highlighted. Above all, the paper will establish that one essential duty of government is to ensure the provision of appropriate mining titles and security of tenure.

Sufficient time has elapsed since the enactment of the amendments to the mining legislation in 1981 to enable an examination to be made of the way in which the licensing system operates in practice. One of the most important decisions in resource management in New Zealand is whether or not rights of access to the resource should be conferred by the Crown upon an appropriate private sector participant. The licensing system is the means for allocating these rights of access. The manner in which the licensing system is administered, therefore, is crucial to natural resource management in New Zealand. What is the mining licensing system in New Zealand designed to achieve? This simple question admits of no easy answer. Is it the identification and development of the mineral resources of New Zealand? Are these objectives tempered by issues of resource conservation and environmental protection? Is a balance to be achieved among these competing factors? Does the legislation contain any priorities? Does the system respond in an ad hoc manner to particular facts and circumstances or does it operate within a more predictable framework? To what extent are decisions made on access to minerals with reference to the development or conservation of other resources? These questions may be summarised in the title to this paper which poses the question whether mining licences are instruments for resource management.

The East wall of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Fimiston Open Pit (KCGM Superpit) has a history of wall instabilities impacting mining operations; the most significant of which occurred in May 2018, when more than 1 Mt of rock dislodged over six, 30 m high bench stacks and impacted the pit floor. Since 2011 approximately 1.250 Mt of material has fallen from the East wall at Fimiston Pit across three failure events (2011, 2018 and 2020). Each failure has been associated with major structures intersecting the pit walls: the Fiji Fault, the Australia East Secondary Splay Fault and the EWD3 Fault. In each instance the trigger for failure has been transient pore pressure in the pit walls. Northern Star will mine a cut back behind the failure area over a vertical distance of 180 m. Cut back mining will include the extraction of a remaining in situ wedge, which is assessed as kinematically able to fail, and a subvertical failure backscarp in Stage 1. A substantial amount of rill material from the 2018 and 2020 failures will be extracted in Stage 2. This paper presents the methodology in use to mine Stage 1 of the cut back, safely, through this potentially high-risk area, detailing the specific mining methodology employed, the controls put in place and the monitoring required. Day-to-day monitoring will be undertaken using the already installed slope stability radar and will feed into a daily assessment of activities which may be undertaken in the cut back area. Initial activities will focus on eliminating the potentially unstable wedge and vertical backscarp with use of innovative drill and blast techniques/products and the extensive use of remote capable equipment to limit personnel exposure.

The Mount Isa property has been in operation since June, 1931; during this period operations have changed from the production and treatment of carbonate ores to the mining, milling, and smelting of sulphide ores. This change involved revision of ore-extraction methods.Stoping methods have been designed to apply to parallel lodes ranging from 10 ft. to over 100 ft. in width and dipping at 50° to 60°. The hardness and strength of the ore and enclosing wall rocks, together with the strength and thickness of the country rock between lodes, have permitted the selection of a sub-level stoping method for mining the sulphide ores.

In setting out to describe the methods and machinery employed at Iron Knob the writer does not attempt to give any information as to the situation, topography or geological features of the locality. This, together with estimates of the quantities of ore still available, has been carried out in a most thorough manner by R. L. Jackr and F. R. Hockey. This essay is intended to deal with working methods as they exist to-day, beginning with drilling, blasting, quarry traction, etc., and touching on such details as the supplyof electricity, water and compressed air.At the present time almost the entire output of ore is won from the hill known as Iron Monarch. THE millng methods employed in the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company's mines are, perhaps, less known to the milling world than those of other important districts, due to the geographical remoteness and isolation of the Mount Lyell field,but they present many features which are unusual, and should be of interest to the mining engineer. Typical mining is carried out on an open-stope system, details of which are the result of local experience and evolution, and of which the outstanding feature is that the ground is so worked as to be largely self-supporting by virtue of domical form given to the stope roofs. It is locally termed "rill" stoping,' but differs widely from what is generally understood by that designation, chiefly in that the "rill" or slope is developed in every direction from a central focus, and not merely in directions followllig the strike of a lode or ore-body whose longitudinal dimensions are very much greater than its width. Such terms as "donie stoping" or "arched-back stoping" would be more appropriate and descriptive.The company's active operations' at the present time extend to the Mount Lyell and North Lyell mines, and, though the fundamental principles of stoping methods are the same in each, the dissimilarity of the ore-bodies, both in nature and mode ofoccurrence, necessitates considerable variation as to details to meet the respective conditions. The Mount Lyell pyritic body lends itself to the adoption of the .system in its simplest and almost ideal form, and a description of stoping in this mine willserve best to illustrate it, while later reference to details of practice in the North Lyell mine will indicate how it may be varied to meet more difficult circumstances.

The small party of mining men who formed the original Mount Morgan Syndicate in 1882, commenced operations on the top of the mountain with what were practically nothing more than small hillside quarries, It was not until 1891 that underground stoping began, and open-cut mining therefore commenced with the commencement of operations. This hillside quarrying, however, seems to have been quite haphazard and unsystematic ; there is no trace or sign of any properly devised mining scheme. This can be seen plainly enough from an examination of old mine plans; for in less than five years after stoping was; adopted, the open-cut was down into the stoped-out ground. The following table, prepared from these old plans, shows the downward trend of the excavation in the past fiftyseven years:-

MINING operations in the Waihi mine began, under the present proprietorship in the year 1889. Previous to this, and as far back as the year 1880, the presence of reefs in the Martha Hill had been known, and surface working on a small scale had beencarried out, without any great measure of success. The only method of treatment in use at this time was the old system of light stamps, amalgamating tables and berdans, and recovery by this method being low, little margin for profit was left, so thatthe property in these days was not considered of great importance and work on the area was only carried on spasmodically by different owners.On the transfer of the leases to the present company, calcining, dry crushing, and hot pan amalgamation was adopted as the method of treatment, and this system was continued till the more modern cyanide process was introduced and applied. As themethods of treatment and gold-saving became more efficient with the application of more modern and scientific processes, the importance and future prospects of the mine became more and more pronounced, and mining on a larger and more comprehensive scale was gradually established.As in the case of ore treatment, mining methods in the early stages were not as far adv.anced as the adopted practice of today, and numerous shafts, levels close together in vertical height.

This paper gives a description of the methods of mining employed at North Broken Hill Limited, Broken Hill, N.S.W.GEOLOGICAL NOTESThe main Broken Hill lode occurs as a replacement of tightly folded pre-Cambrian sediments. Replacement has followed certain stratigraphical horizons and the main bulk of the ore is found where these have been packed into the noses of anticlinal and synclinal folds.Throughout the mine the ore-bearing folds pitch north fairly consistently at 45 degrees, as a result of which two favourable horizons in the same fold appear in plan as separate orebodies and these are referred to as the "Southern Orebody" and the "Northern Orebody" respectively.The general dip of the orebodies to the west is about 60 degrees. A typical sill is shown in the plan of the 1,400-ft level (Fig. 1).Both the hanging wall and footwall rocks throughout the mine are weak and, as a result, it is necessary that the hanging wall must be well supported after ore extraction, to prevent subsidence. The weakness in the footwall is confined to a narrow zone, approximately 60 feet in width. The Fitzpatrick area is the deepest section of the North Mine, with the orebody located between 1450 and 1800 m below the surface and some 600 m NE of the main No. 3 Shaft orebody and separated from it by the intensely sheared Globe Vauxhall Shear Zone. Development towards the Fitzpatrick area commenced in 1977 after earlier initial exploration drive development. However, it was not until 1982 that mining in the Fitzpatrick area actually began with the silling out of No. 36 level at a depth of some 1600 in. Since that time mechanised cut and fill mining from an incline ramp system with connecting stope accesses has progressed some 25 m above No. 36 level. Initial sill development on No. 37 level at 1660 m depth also commenced in July 1987 to further develop the Fitzpatrick area.

The OK orebody comprises a steep dipping narrow quartz reef averaging 0.4 m in width hosted in basalt and gabbro with porphyry bars cross-cutting through it. The following paper tracks the mining of this orebody, challenges encountered, measures undertaken to address these challenges and changes in mining conditions and methods as the mine matured in both depth and age. The initial mining method was narrow vein hand held shrink stoping accessed by shaft, that over the period of the mines life was superseded by gallery stoping, shrink stoping and ultimately mechanised narrow vein long hole sublevel open stoping. The reasoning behind the change in mining methods is detailed, including safety and cost benefits. The transition presented many challenges that were overcome, resulting in the successful development of a narrow vein long hole stoping method. The lessons learnt during the transition period and the practices and principles developed for successful mining of narrow vein orebodies using long-hole open stoping methods are summarised in this paper. The final section of the paper takes a retrospective view of how the knowledge gained through the mining of the OK orebody would be applied to a new mine containing an orebody of this type, with consideration given to the initial excavation design, equipment selection, mining sequence, geotechnical investigations and mining method used.
