The Torington Lodes.This paper describes investigations into mineralogical, petrological and structural associations of cassiterite in occurrences of economic value. The work was carried out in three mines, during a number of years, in the hope that the, data collected might be helpfulin the search for occurrences of cassiterite in stanniferous zones and reduce unproductive exploratory work. Tin-bearing lodes at Torington, in the New England district, New South Wales, have been worked since 1880, and the locality is the most important centre of lode tin occurrence in the, State. The township of Torington is 18 miles westerly from Deepwater, a station on the Great Northern Railway, 446 miles from Sydney.The tinfield forms part of the Mole Tableland, which has an altitude between 3,000 ft. and 4,000 ft. above sea level. The country rock, in which the stanniferous lodes occur, is granite of Permian age, which has been intruded into Carboniferous claystone. An inlierof claystone is exposed to the west of the stanniferous area, 'and in it, close to' its contact with the enclosing granite, are occurrences of wolfram and bismuth. These minerals, together with chalcopyrite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, zinc blende, galena and molybdenite, in very small quantity, are associated with cassiterite in lodes traversing the granite, particularly near the claystone, but decrease in amount with distance from the contact. Their occurrence is sporadic and usually causes no trouble in dressing the cassiterite concentrate, the final product containing less than 1% of total penalisable impurity. In Curnow's mine, pyrite, galena and molybdenite have been observed at 700 ft. from surface.The granite is of the biotite type and its structure may be divided into four groups, or classifications, arising from segregation processes during cooling and consolidation. The four classes, in order of extent of distribution, are:1. Granite of normal type, in which the constituent quartz felspar and mica, have a particle size approximately 14, in.2. Porphyritic granite, in which the felspar particles are from % in. to lin. in size, that of the quartz and mica approximately % in.3. A fine-grained granite, in which the particles of all constituent minerals are % in. or less in size;4. A rock of highly siliceous ground mass containing very small particles of felspar and almost negligible biotite.Type 1 is the general type of granite in all mines of the field; types 2 and 3 may occur as large masses, or all three classes may merge rapidly one into the other, and all be disclosed in 20 ft. of driving. Usually, however, the segregations are massive, but are not associated with any special horizon. For instance, a mass of porphyiiticgranite extends from surface to a depth of 440 ft., for a distance of 350 ft. south from the New England main shaft. The upper levels of Curnow's mine, 14" mile south-east, are in normal granite, but a restricted mass 'of porphyritic granite occurred between Nos. 5 and 6 levels, or 400-500 ft. below the collar of the shaft...

Gold and Silver bearing epithermal veins of the Golden Cross deposit are hosted in Miocene and Pliocene calc-alkaline volcanics occurring 8 km northwest of Waihi at the southern extent of the Coromandel Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand. Veining occurred during a period of hydrothermal activity that began early to late Pliocene, and possibly continued into the Pleistocene.   Field relations and petrographic relationships reveal that multiple generations of FeS2 occur in the Golden Cross region, with FeS2 occurring in all nine rock types recognised at Golden Cross. The variability of FeS2 morphology was investigated by preparation of high purity FeS2 separates, and grain counting. Marcasite is the dominant FeS2 phase at Golden Cross, and along with pyrite is shown to have a systematic habit variation. Pyrite shows a sequence from cubes through octahedra to pyritohedra to dendritic growth. This pyrite sequence conforms to an experimentally determined sequence. The parallel sequence for marcasite at Golden Cross is from tabular through bladed aggregates to euhedral miscellaneous marcasite morphologies. The FeS2 sequences observed are believed to be due to increasing temperature, and perhaps also increasing FeS2-oversaturation and fluid flow.

A quarter of the North Island, New Zealand is covered by weathered volcanic tephras of mainly andesitic and rhyolitic compositions. Rapid weathering of basic volcanic glass and slower weathering of acidic glass have produced short-range order alumino-silicate clays such as allophane. Although amorphous to x-rays they have a high degree of local structure. Allophane comprises hollo spheres of approximately 40 diameter and 7 X wall thickness. This small particle size and morphology gives a very high surface area (up to 800 m2/g). Ferrihydrite is another short-range order clay of similar small size and high surface area; it has ò formed from the rapid oxidation of water containing ferrous iron derived from volcanic rocks. The quantity of allophane present in tephra depends upon the climate, the nature of the volcanic glass and the time it has weathered. In New Zealand highest amounts (-50%) occur in beds of andesitic ash deposited on old ignimbrite surfaces with mean annual rainfalls >1600 mm. Both allophane and ferrihydrite will react with oxyanions, such as phosphate, arsenate or borate, and remove them from solution. Other anions such as fluoride also react with aluminium sites on the mineral surface. At NZ Soil Bureau, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), New Zealand, techniques have been developed for granulating allophane to enable it to be used to remove pollutants from solution without dispersion into the liquid phase. This granulated allophane can be used to remove phosphate from sewage effluent or fluoride from tap water without having a sedimentation stage to remove the clay.

The mostly submerged New Zealand sub-continent has a complex geological history and an active oceanographic regime that provides opportunities and challenges for offshore mineral exploration. Known deposits include polymetallic Fe-Mn nodules and crusts, polymetallic massive sulfides, phosphatic nodules, titanomagnetitie ironsands and placer gold deposits. Currently exploration interest is high with some 3.5 per cent of the EEZ under prospecting permit or application.   Article 76 of the UNCLOS convention allows coastal states to have sovereign rights over areas of the seafloor that are natural prolongations of the landmass that constitute submerged parts of the continental margin as extended continental shelf. New Zealand has substantial areas of elevated ridges and plateaux beyond the 200 M EEZ that form extended continental shelf. New Zealand has nearly completed a ten year, $44.4 M programme to define its outer extended continental shelf. New Zealand will lodge its outer limits of the extended continental shelf with the UN-appointed Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in 2006, which if accepted, will enclose ~1.8 million km2 beyond the existing EEZ. Ocean Survey 20/20 is a follow-on marine mapping programme to underpin resource exploration and environmental management of the EEZ and extended continental shelf.

There is a lack of information concerning the movements of water on the continental shelf, particularly with regard to data obtained regularly over significant periods of time. The Horace Lamb Centre for Oceanographic Research has recently deployed data acquisition systems on the sea bed off the coast of South Australia to record tides, swell, and ocean temperatures. Some of these early records are described. The swell data are pertinent to future offshore operations with drilling rigs, barges, and other equipment, while the temperature variations give evidence of significant bottom currents, apart from those due to swell.

Man has always been and will always be part of his environment, in ,a good, bad or indifferent manner. Until quite recently, this environment has been the atmospheric boundary layer above the land masses, and to a limited extent the air-sea interface of the oceans. Since the days when he lived in caves, he has built up a wealth of observations on these two environments,-with ever-increasing scientific precision which unfortunately until quite recently was completely insufficient for modern capabilities of data analysis. Consequently, in a sense, he has left in his wake thousands of years of missed, opportunities for making exact observations and increasing his understanding. The data of the past are lost and he has to be satisfied with what he can assemble from now on when his environ- ment, largely as a result of his actions, is exhibiting more and more rapid variations in time; in other words, time series of observations of phenomena are required, the length of which is critical for most purposes of analysis.

The subject of octanes and knock in petrol engines is of general interest, not only to the engineers and chemists in the petroleum and automotive industries, but also to the motorist who wishes to see some light through the haze of propaganda regarding "super" petrols. A mixture of petrol vapour and air will explode when a spark is passed through it if it contains more than one and a half per cent. or less than six per cent. of petrol vapour by volume. In a petrol engine the mixture has to be within the explosive range before it will operate. When the spark is passed it 'ignites the petrol vapour-air mixture which burns with rapid but finite progress of the flame front 'through the unburnt gases in much the same manner that a charge of dynamite is consumed. The turbulence of the gases in the cylinder under normal operating conditions more than doubles the velocity of the flame front and enables the combustion to be completed by the end of the working (expansion) stroke:KNOCKIf the cylinder head 'is poorly designed or is covered with a deposit of carbon, it is possible for "hot spots" to develop, and these can ignite the mixture before the spark is passed. This pre-ignition gives rise to an engine knock but is accompanied by a dull thud rather than the ringing knock associated with the true "knocking" found in a petrol engine and attributed to the detonation of the mixture. The Hamersley Basin of Western Australia holds significant tonnages of detrital iron deposits. Formed by a cyclic weathering and eroding sequence of nominally barren banded iron formation, they may form rich proximal accumulations of iron cemented gravels distal from any obvious hard-rock iron mineralisation. While generally small, they nonetheless represent excellent economic targets as they are near surface and easy to mine. The relatively high density of iron detritals, when compared with their sedimentary hosts, makes the gravity method the primary method of exploring for these blind deposits. Identification of possible trap sites is used as a precursor to gravity surveying, with magnetics used as an ancillary method prior to drilling. Application of the gravity method in this terrain is not straightforward. Detrital trap sites are best developed next to the spectacular cliffs that form the range fronts to the Hamersley Ranges. Precise terrain corrections and use of first vertical derivatives are routinely applied to gravity data in an effort to map every possible gravity high that may reflect the presence of a detrital accumulation. Extensions to Hamersley Iron Pty LimitedÆs BS2D deposit were discovered by the routine application of gravity. This methodology has been used to create a model by which exploration for detrital deposits continue to the present day.

Modern off-highway trucks have evolved over 30 years from small 20 ton units to vehic- les with capacities of up to 170 tons. Diesel engines are used by all manufacturers while transmissions are either mechanical or electri- cal. Development over the years has kept pace with component availability from engine, trans- mission and tyre manufacturers.Computer simula- tion studies are recognised for purposes of vehicle evaluation and costing under various op- erating conditions. Several manufacturers are currently manufacturing or evaluating vehicles with capacities of up to 260 tons. This paper describes the essential facts associated with the operation of off-highway trucks of the rear dump type in the mining industry.

The extraction of drawbells in Lift #2 at Northparkes Mines E26 orebody was achieved by single shot blasting, enabled through the use of electronic detonators. This paper discusses the designs considered at the time of the feasibility study and the various changes made to these designs prior to and during the construction phase of the Lift #2 block cave. Operational issues encountered are highlighted, as are ways in which these were overcome. The amount of personnel utilised to mine the drawbells is also covered. Lists of design and operational considerations to be used for drawbell extractions have been included.

"AustraliaÆs mining sector faces challenges to its competitiveness; operating costs are being adversely affected as a result of volatile commodity prices and growing international market pressures.Diesel fuel-generated power used in typical remote mining projects is generally reliable and quick-to-deploy; however it is ongoing expensive operating cost.Many mines and communities in remote locations source electricity from diesel generation, and often pay over $300/MWh in fuel and carbon only (i.e. excluding CAPEX). These costs are expected to rise over time and are vulnerable to price shock events or supply chain interruptions in international markets.Solar photovoltaic (PV) and other renewables can be integrated with existing diesel units to provide a highly reliable power supply. Such renewables now provide a cheaper source of electricity while maintaining the mining industryÆs stringent reliability requirements; some renewables are now cheaper than diesel power ù supplying electricity at approximately $226/MWh.Also, significant funding and concessional rate financing have recently become available to support the development of remote solar-diesel (or solar-wind-diesel) hybrid systems, including: up to $2.2 billion of as-yet uncommitted grants through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and is now seeking mining industry partners, up to $10 billion of concessional financing for emerging renewable technologies through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) and this commences July 2013, ongoing revenue support through the Renewable Energy Target scheme, and other regional support programs administered by various governments.This paper explores: the business case for renewables - what applications and when to consider them, the potential operating cost savings if solar was integrated, the technical challenges and common pitfalls, and how to overcome them, and the upfront investment costs and whether the site is eligible for Government subsidy programs.CITATION:Chambers, C, 2013. The Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) and the Crown Minerals Act 1991 (CMA) both came into force on 1 October 1991. The purpose behind RMA was to integrate the existing laws dealing with town and country planning, land subdivision, water and soil, minerals and energy resources, coastal management, air pollution and noise control into one omnibus Act. Originally, there was a section in RMA dealing with minerals. However, this section was taken out of RMA and a companion piece of legislation - namely CMA - was passed with RMA.

THE following paper embodies the present practice and the results of past experience in the survey departments of two of the leading Broken Hill mines, the Central (Sulphide Corporation Ltd.) and the Broken Hill South S. M. Co. N. L.The authors intend to limit the scope of this paper to a consideration of office methods, as much has recently appeared in technical literature concerning field work, both surface and underground. Special reference may here be made to a valuable paper on 'Mine Surveying' by H W Gartrell, in Vol XIII of Transactions, in which the author gives considerable attention to field work. Moreover, much of the office work described in current literature is American, and sometimes not suited to local conditions, being ·often exceedingly elaborate and demanding a large staff of assistants. It is believed that the methods of recording information described in this paper are sufficiently simple and flexible to be adapted to most Australian mines. Brief acknowledgement must be made to the work done by Americans, who have raised mine surveying to the position of a separate profession, instead of being merely an unimportant branch of land surveying.

Good morning. I am very pleased to be invited to present the Opening Address to this inaugural New Zealand Minerals & Mining Conference. It is indeed a pleasure to see so many representatives of this industry, which is so important to New Zealand's economy, present here today.   I extend a warm welcome to all delegates, particularly those from outside New Zealand. To those of you who have travelled from offshore, please closely observe our industry, and do not hesitate to ask Crown Minerals staff here for any further information you may want. I trust you will soon come to the same conclusion that my two following speakers have; that New Zealand is a good investment destination, and further that many of you will decide to invest in New Zealand's minerals and mining industry.   In New Zealand the minerals industry - minerals, coal and petroleum - together constitute an approximate $2.5 billion per year business. In broad terms this is about 3% of our Gross Domestic Product.

Good morning and thanks for the chance to talk to you. It's really pleasing to see so many industry representatives here I want to spend a few minutes talking about issues relating to your industry. At the end of today I would like to leave you with three strong messages from government. The first is that this government supports environmentally responsible mining and the endeavours of the mining industry. The second is that explorers and developers are wanted and welcomed in New Zealand. And the last is that it is up to the industry to keep the public properly informed about how your industry and to constantly work on improving your public image. The mining industry is a high-tech industry which fits snugly with our concept of a growing knowledge-based economy. It has particular value for regional development, the gold mining industry alone provides more than 4,000 jobs û mostly outside of the main cities. The industrial minerals industry is twice as large as that. As well as those people directly employed by the industry there are greater downstream effects for the community. One example from the broader extraction industry of this is of the local pie shop down the road from one of Taranaki's petroleum industry locations. The shop sells over $4,000 worth of pies a week to workers in the industry. That's just one example of the positive benefits the industry brings to its local community and is the sort of real positive benefit you need to be telling people about

The coastline is. an incomparable stretch of sea coast known as Ninety Mile Beach. Two gas pipelines and two oil pipelines carrying hydrocarbons from thb'Bass Strait fields to the markets of Australia cross this beach. They cannot be seen as they are laid in trenching stretch- ing many miles out to sea and the beach was restored to its natural state. Even where the dunes were disturbed, suitable grass was sown thus consolidating the sand and preventing erosion. Ninety Mile Beach is but one of the many key.wildlife and recreational areas that our operations must be concerned with. Others include Westernport and Corner Inlet, but the one discussed in this paper in particular is the platform area of the Bass Strait itself. Never was the old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" more meaningful than in offshore oil production. All are well aware of some of the events of the past several years that resulted in large and costly oil spills. Far less is known, seen or publicised about the measures and developments that are undertaken to ensure that such events do not occur. We also have well developed plans for response in the event of an emergency situation, which can be initiated with great rapidity. Our responsibility is to ensure that with the best of engineering technology and operating procedures, spills do not occur.

A combined reflection seismic and magnetic survey off the south coast of New South Wales has revealed six distinct reflection horizons within the Lower Triassic-Upper Permian sequence, and has enabled the upper part of the lllawarra Coal Measures to be mapped in considerable detail. Large magnetic anomalies in the eastern half of the survey area appear to originate in the Gerringong Volcanic Sequence which forms the magnetic basement in the survey. Small residual anomalies in the western half of the area can be correlated with small scale faulting and folding in the upper part of the llawarra Coal Measures, as revealed by the seismic reflection survey.A synclinal axis striking at approximately 55° has been mapped near the western margin of the survey area, and areas of faulting and folding have been outlined by combined analysis of seismic and magnetic results.

The title of my address today is "Oil and Gas Valuations - A Simplistic View of Some Critical Issues". Alternatively I could have called this address "Pitfalls for investors' and corporates in accessing Independent Experts Reports" 'as in this brief 12 minute talk I will briefly comment on some common misconceptions with regard to the valuation of exploration areas and production interests, and comment on how the draft release guidelines address these issues.

A detailed study on oil agglomeration of fine metal oxide particles is presented in this paper. The major content embraces several aspects which may possibly reflect the current trends in oil agglomeration such as the effect of chemical and physical parameters, the activation of target minerals and the deactivation of gangue particles, the mechanisim of bridging liquid and the kinetics of oil agglomeration process. Systems of ilmenite-feldspar, manganese dioxide - quartz were seperated successfully through oil agglomeration followed by decantation or flotation technique respectively. A triple mixture of vandium-bearing titanomagnetite ilmenite and feldspar was processed satisfactorily using a composite technology: oil agglomeration-decantation-magnetic concentration.

Average annual growth in consumption of primary energy in Australia over the past ten years has been 5.5% compared to a world average of 4.1%. Over the next ten years growth rate is expected to increase to 6% per annum due largely to the rapid development in the mineral processing industry. By the end of the 1970's natural gas is expected to supply more than 9% of Australia's, primary energy market. Coal will supply 40% and petroleum products 47%. Nuclear energy will make its appearance but-will only make a small contribution in the period. Australia has adequate reserves of natural gas and coal to supply its needs in the 1970's and beyond. However the newly developed reserves of crude, while supplying 60-70% of requirements-in the initial years; will need regular and sizable additions if they are to .keep pace with the expanding consumption. For Australia to become self sufficient in the period 1970-1990 it is estimated *that new discoveries-will need to approximate. ten times the volume of recoverable reserves found in Australia to date. .
