Online cyanide analysers have been successfully used to control free cyanide in the gold/silver leach process for over 15 years. Use of such analysers leads to cyanide savings and improvement in recoveries. Plants with leach cyanide analysers show both lower and more consistent cyanide levels in tailings. Cyanide code compliance requires meeting residual cyanide targets in tailings. Monitoring and logging of the residual cyanide in plant tailings and effluent is required. Meeting targets may require cyanide recovery/destruction processes to be implemented. The operating cost of destroying cyanide is often the same order of magnitude as the cyanidation cost. Various cyanide destruction and/or recovery processes are reviewed. Choice of a process consistent with the environmental and operational requirements is illustrated. Online weak acid dissociable cyanide (CNWAD) analysers have recently been developed and introduced on gold plants. The application of a WAD 1000 online CNWAD analyser at a large gold plant is presented. The analyser ensures code compliance, reduces cyanide destruction process operating costs and forms a historical record of CNWAD values in tailings.

Online analysis of metal content can be used to optimise the grade and recovery of a flotation circuit. Compared to conventional laboratory analyses, the benefit of an online analyser is the speed of the measurement, therefore disturbances (eg changes in feed grade and decrease in recovery) can be reacted to in real time by an operator or automatic process control system. In some cases traditional X-ray fluorescence analysers can be applied to silica analysis in iron ore when the SiO2 grades are high enough and have a negative correlation with iron; however, generally a laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyser is more suitable for low Z elements.The Outotec Courier 8® analyser is a LIBS based analyser able to measure elements starting from lithium (Z = 3), thus being able to measure impurities; eg silica and aluminium directly in iron ore slurries. Besides online elemental analysis, the analyser can be combined with optical measurements for rapid continuous measurement of each sample line. Online analysis of continuous and batch processes has seen a dramatic increase in recent years, with examples ranging from petrochemicals to pharmaceuticals, to industrial biotechnology and food and drink. The particularly challenging environment of alumina processing has meant that instrumentation needs specific features and characteristics to be truly suitable, features such as: robustness, resistance to caustic conditions both in the analyte and the ambient environment, and reliability for long-term continuous use. Here we present the development of a novel FTIR spectrometer that achieves these requirements through the use of a static optics arrangement of mirrors, and stable diamond-tipped light-pipe probe. Firstly we give a very brief explanation of spectroscopic analysis, and the difference between FTIR and other infrared methodologies. Next we outline the novel arrangement of mirrors required to produce an interferogram without moving mirrors, and compare the benefits and drawbacks of this approach instead of conventional designs. We then share the results of laboratory analysis of synthetic Bayer liquors, with detection limits for aluminium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate and various sodium salts of organic acids. We then share the results of analysis on production samples, both in idealised laboratory conditions and then online in the process itself. Lastly we present work on in situ ultrasonic descaling solutions to avoid scale build-up and provide continuous cleaning of the probe – preventing the need for probe removal and manual cleaning.

Concentrating lower and more variable grade ore resources to meet acceptable concentrate quality criteria requires removal of significant amount of gangue minerals. Monitoring plant feed mineralogy and concentrate by on-stream analysis has significant economic benefits in concentrate quality and recovery optimisation. There is a need to develop a sensitive slurry on-line analyser for silica, aluminium, magnesium and other light elements.On-line XRF elemental analysis technology, which is a routine practice in base metal concentrators is not able to measure lighter elements than calcium from slurry. Too much of the X-ray fluorescence signal from lighter elements is absorbed by water. The limitations in the direct measurement of silica and other light elements have restricted its use in some applications. Some light element slurry analysers have been developed based on prompt gamma neutron activation (PGNAA) method but they have not performed up to the expectations. The performance of prototype magnetic resonance sensors suited to mineral measurement in conveyor, slurry or portable applications is described. The sensors can be positioned around conveyors and modified slurry pipes, providing deep penetration of the sensing field, relative insensitivity to ore surface conditions and high mineral discrimination. Measurements on slurry, concentrates and ores sourced from mine operations are presented for two applications. Firstly, the quantitative measurement of chalcopyrite in slurry was demonstrated in laboratory measurements. In a calibration test, a standard error of 0.1 wt per cent and detection limit of 0.3 wt per cent was obtained. Secondly, results were obtained for the discrimination of iron ore texture. Signals were readily observed using measurement integration times of seconds to several minutes, depending on ore material. The results demonstrate the feasibility of online quantitative analysis of selected minerals in processing applications using magnetic resonance.

Knowledge of fuel qualities is of ultimate importance for the efficiency of chemical plants or power stations. Although most blending yards are equipped with automatic samplers and the derived samples are processed in the laboratory, the quality variation of the blended product may still be strong. This is caused by several reasons. First of all the process of sampling, crushing, dividing and analysis is time consuming. Results are available only with a delay of two to 24 hours. During this time blending is operated without knowledge of the main parameters. Conveyors with high throughput require expensive sampling systems capable of handling samples which are representative. The frequency of sampling needs also to be high in order to be representative. This results in high maintenance costs and also downtime of the sampling system.Online analysis of bulk materials has matured over time and today it can supplement but not replace laboratory analysis. As an example, J&C Bachmann has realised a coal quality monitoring system on the coal supply of a South African coal processing plant. The plant consumes ~42 Mt of coal per annum. The blending yard consists of two sets of three heaps where coal of six different mines is blended according to the factory’s requirement. From there, the blended coal is fed to the factory on two different belts.In 2010 the plant installed a TEXAS X-ray fluorescence analyser as a trial. It was tested under different conditions on several belts before the customer decided to install six TEXAS analysers on the feed belts to the stackers and two more analysers on the reclaimer belts. All analysers are installed directly on the belt and not on a substream.During the test period blending strategies were developed in close cooperation between the customer and J&C Bachmann. The use of the analysers in conjunction with the blending model has proven that the variation of the reclaimed coal quality was decreased significantly, which results in increased process performance and significant cost savings.CITATION:Bachmann, C C, Bachmann, J F, Cipold, M P and Ha, J, 2017. This paper presents the art of on-stream particle size and elemental analysis used at iron ore concentrators, followed by the results and experiences from several sites.Online particle size analysis is rather common at medium- to large-sized concentrators. Online X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental analysis, however, is only used in some iron ore concentrators, while it is a routine practice in base metal concentrator plants. Online XRF analysis is applicable for process monitoring and control down to four to five per cent silica by measuring Fe assays accurately. With lower silica content, direct measurement of silica and other light elements is required. Some light element analysers that are based on the prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) method have been developed, but they have not performed up to expectations with slurry analysis. Other methods have been tried though these have not been used beyond prototype installations. Operating online light element slurry analyser installations are not common in iron ore applications.There is an economic incentive to mine lower and variable grade iron ore resources, which require concentration and removal of several impurities to produce high-quality concentrates for pellet production. Monitoring such operations by on-stream analysis has significant economic benefits, and there is a need to develop a dependable slurry online analyser for Si, Al, Mg and other light elements. Improving liquid blending operations in production plants is of paramount importance in many industries like mining, oils, petrochemicals and food. For accurate blending of different types of process streams, like homogeneous, heterogeneous, cold or hot streams, it is essential that the composition can be accurately monitored in real time. Advances in energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) technology offers the possibility to apply XRF for online elemental analysis. In this paper we discuss an online EDXRF analyser for accurate blending control in many industries.EDXRF has the advantage that multiple elements can be measured simultaneously over a wide concentration range of wt per cent down to a few mg/kg, for elements between sodium (Na) and americium (Am) in the periodic table. To reach the desired accuracy and precision in an online XRF analyser, it is important to bring a representative and homogeneous sample of the process flow into the optical path of the analyser. The combination of a laminar flow cell design and advanced EDXRF technology leads to low detection limits and high performance. The obtained precision and accuracy allows for much tighter process control. The considerations which led to the decision to_ install discs at the Dampier Pellet Plant of Hamer ley Iron Pty. Ltd. are described. Initial testwork showed that the ore could be ground dry in open circuit to a Blaine index of 2500 cm2/g and that it pelletized readily. The various design criteria including diameter, slope, speed, motor size, depth of sidewall, feed point and water spray location were then determined. Plant performance after commissioning is described including the various problems encountered and the modifications since carried out to overcome them. The main problem was quickly identified as disc feed rate control. Various bin and bin feeder modifications were tried to overcome the effects of the fluidising characteristics of the dry ground ore. Other factors found to affect disc operation are ore size distribution, additives and operator competence.

Many of the ‘new paradigms in mining’ and notions of ‘sustainable mining’ have at their core the requirement for reliable, continuous centimetre-level positioning accuracy to enable increased automation of mining operations. The deployment of precision systems for navigating, controlling and monitoring machinery such as drills, dozers, draglines and shovels with real time position information increase their operational efficiency, and reduce the need for humans to be exposed to hazardous conditions. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is the best known, and only currently fully operational, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) providing positioning capability anywhere in the globe, on a continuous 24/7 basis, with accuracies ranging from the dekametre-level to the sub-centimetre-level depending on hardware and operational configuration. Despite this versatility, GNSS cannot satisfy the high accuracy positioning requirements for many applications in mine surveying, and mine machine guidance and control. The reason is that increasingly open cut mines are getting deeper, resulting in a reduction of the ‘sky-view’ necessary for GNSS systems to operate satisfactorily. Yet, to date there have been no viable alternatives to GNSS that can be deployed in mine environments that can meet the challenging requirements in open cut mines.Locata Corporation, a Canberra-based company, has invented a terrestrial high accuracy positioning system known as ‘Locata’ that can augment GNSS with extra terrestrial signals to permit cm-level positioning accuracy even when there are insufficient GNSS satellite signals for reliable positioning and navigation. Locata relies on a network of synchronised ground-based transceivers that transmit positioning signals that can be tracked by suitably equipped user receivers. Hence Locata can be considered a new type of ‘local constellation’, able to provide high accuracy positioning coverage where GNSS fails. This paper introduces some of the technical aspects of this Australian technology and describes tests conducted by Leica Geosystems over the last few years at Newmont Boddington Gold in Western Australia. A recent news announcement by Leica Geosystems (12 January 2011) has confirmed that their new mine management system will have combined GNSS + Locata positioning capability – the first commercial product that integrates GNSS and Locata capabilities into a single high accuracy and high availability navigation device for open cut mine machine automation applications.

The Pilbara region, located in the north-west of Western Australia, is significant as the second-largest source of iron ore on the planet. Iron ore mines owned and operated by Pilbara Iron are located within the Hamersley Basin. This paper refers to the Greater Paraburdoo mines, the 4WEST and 4EAST pits, located on the southern margin of the Hamersley Basin. The groundwater model refers to ephemeral watercourses: Seven Mile and Pirraburdoo creeks, which are adjacent to the two pits, and Ratty Springs, located upstream from 4WEST and within Pirraburdoo creek. The spring and creeks hold cultural heritage significance for local Aboriginal communities. Two of these, the Gobawarrah Minduarra Yinhawanga (GMY) and Innawonga native title claim groups, initiated hydrological work on the two creeks and Ratty Springs, with the aim of determining the affects of dewatering on the natural water flows of these systems. The numerical model used to simulate drawdown in the Pirraburdoo and Seven Mile Creeks was derived from PMWIN Pro software and covered an area of 77 km2. The modelling period was from January 1998 to December 2004, and the prediction period was from January 2005 to December 2015. The model has four layers and incorporated effects caused by mining voids, 4WEST and 4EAST pits, creek bed material, weathered bedrock below creeks and surrounding banded iron formations (BIF). The model has been calibrated using the trial-and-error method set down by Middelmis et al (2001). The current dewatering schedule (12 ML/day) in the 4WEST and 4EAST mining areas does not affect the water table levels in the adjacent creeks significantly or for any considerable periods of time. However, changes to mine plans may occur, for example, in response to changed commodity price and may lead to significant increase in rates of vertical advancement. This, in turn, affects dewatering schedules, as greater vertical advancement requires increased dewatering effort. When an accelerated mine plan is applied to the model and dewatering rates increased to 18 ML/day, drawdowns in the creeks are more noticeable. The model has therefore helped to indicate the extent to which increased dewatering rates may be acceptable, especially in terms of immediate and longer-term damage to riparian species, ie Melaleuca and Eucalypt. Predictions from the model may also allow mine planners to schedule decreased rates of vertical advancement, where these are required to meet environmental constraints.

McLeod: Without getting into the argument as to how well we can know our resource levels specifically in the immediate short term, I would like to make one or two points about the future, and perhaps try and persuade people that they are not really facing a doomsday. It is fair to say that over the last few years the rate at which we have increased our resources has far exceeded the rate at which we have used them, and this is likely to continue for quite a few years yet. As people are now looking for a substitute for petroleum, later on we will be looking for a substitute for coal, should the position get serious. After all man is pretty versatile, has plenty of initiative-and makes allowances for experience. It has been demonstrated here by the way people are looking at use of low quality coals and better use of the coals that are available. It would be fair to say that what now we regard as economically submarginal deposits will, by the time we need them, become economic. I think that there is quite a lot in front of us in exploration and finding new reserves. I would like to have comment from yourself sir, because I recall reading a report of a meeting, here in Wollongong I think it was, in which you addressed the local branch on the future of coal in Australia, and you said that the coal basins of Australia had been well explored and there was not much chance of new discoveries. Since that time we have seen some thousands of millions of tonnes turned up in the Galilee Basin of Queensland, we have seen five hundred million tonnes turned up in Lake Phillipson in South Australia. Do your previous comments still apply? I would like to hear from some of the exploration people, who are operating on an Australia-wide basis, as to how they regard our chances of discovering significant new deposits and significant extensions of known deposits. H,artnell: Mr. McLeod has asked me to comment on what he has just said. I think that the important thing is that our knowledge of the main coal basins in Eastern Australia is increasing in detail but for the most part the extent of coal basins is not being increased in respect of their superficial areas. There are additions but they are not substantially changing our expectation of what the main coal basins will be. I believe that our task is essentially to intensify our knowledge of the main coal basins that we know about. This is important for example for the various reasons that Mr. Roach was talking about, that is the problem of surface alienation, jeopardising the chance of recovery when you go to underground operations. My approach to this whole problem is predicated on the belief that coal has a special destiny to perform in the next fifty years. I believe that it is going to take up to fifty years and maybe a little longer before the enormously demanding technology for nuclear power recovery is in fact achieved. When it is achieved the supply of energy to the world will be enormous, much beyond what we have ever even dreamed about. The mind boggles at what the people of the middle of next century, of two thousand and fifty, will command in the way of physical resources. It is going to be, I believe, tremendous, but the technology involved is very demanding. I mentioned to Mr. McLeod the other day that according to the information that I got in November last, 60% of the nuclear power stations in the United States were out of action, by automatic cut offs because of safety requirements. The technology of breeder reactors seems each year to be a bit further off. In the meantime coal I am sure is going to be called on to supply power directly to fluidised bed and other technologies for power generation. It is going to be called upon in the near future, I believe, to supply liquid fuel on a vast scale and the only thing in my view that we should be thinking about is whether the coal producing countries of the world will succeed in producing as much coal as is going to be demanded. I believe the real challenge to the coal mining industries of the world is that they may fail to do what is going to be demanded of them. This is a challenge I believe to mining technology. I think that we should be working deliberately and energetically finding ways and means where underground recoveries, instead of averaging 50%, can average 50% plus, plus, plus, and this is the first requirement. We should be spending many millions every year, here and overseas, on increasing our means of winning coal because every tonne of coal that is alienated and left irrecoverable in the earth is going to weaken the capacity of the coal mining industry to fulfil, what I believe to be its destiny in the next 50 years.

In Europe, a major interest in the infrastructure and tunnelling fields is in the new crossings of Alps in the form of base tunnels, which are important components of the high-speed (for passengers)/high-capacity (for freight) Trans European railway corridors. These tunnels cross the mountain belt at the elevation of the main cities and basins located all around the Alps and are longer (up to 57 km) and deeper (up to 2500 m) than all tunnels constructed in the centuries before. The excavation of the first Alpine railway and road traffi c tunnels could in general be carried out successfully by conventional excavation methods. With the great lengths of the new base tunnels, mechanised excavation by using tunnel boring machines (TBMs) is imperative as it contributes significantly to savings in construction time and costs. Questions are however posed on the adoption of such a systematic tunnel construction method given the severe ground conditions which are some time anticipated along the tunnel alignment, with possible major geological hazards such as water inflow in heterogeneous fractured or karstifi ed rock masses, stress-induced tensile failure of hard rocks, and plastic shear failure and squeezing of weak rocks, etc. This lecture is to briefly review the current state-of-the-art in the understanding and modelling of two such critical hazards as spalling/bursting and squeezing ground behaviour. With the present interest in the design of mechanised tunnelling with TBMs in such conditions, the complex interaction between the rock mass, the tunnel machine and its system components, and the tunnel support is studied in detail by numerical modelling. The research and development efforts presently underway with the intention to provide the designer with a novel three-dimensional (3D) simulator of mechanised tunnel excavation are presented. Case examples are discussed with reference to the Lyon-Turin Base Tunnel design.

This paper describes the latest open pit optimisation techniques,which now go beyond merely finding an optimal outline. The paper starts by briefly reviewing pit design techniques before optimsation. It then goes on to describe the pit optimisation procedure and the extensions to it which allow the automatic generation of nested families of pits. Next, the properties of families of nested pits are examined and the paper explains how they can be used to simulate certain mining sequences and schedules. Finally, we describe an actual study which was done using this kind of Software.

This case study reviews the Charters Towers vein systems for potential open-pittable bulk tonnage resources in' stockworks, horsetails or multiple vein systems. The review summarises district evaluation undertaken over the last 18. months before specific drill evaluations.Historical mining from Charters Towers includes in excess of six million ounces at head grades of one ounce per ton. A review and structural studies show most veins as simple, tight systems without significant horsetails or multiple sheeted systems. In addition the normal gold content of the pyritic selvages ('formation') is low and disseminated gold is virtually absent. Shoots are structurally controlled on vein/vein and vein/contact intersections. Historically high production vein systems are hosted by .,.t o of the younger granodiorite phases.Geometrically most veins dip shallowly (from 45¦ to as low as 200) in a north or easterly quadrant. Flat dips permit open cut exposure of considerable vein area at a favourable stripping ratio.

In most surface mining operations, overall project economics is driven to a significant extent by the slope angles that can be achieved within the rock masses present. This is particularly true of precious metal pits in which stripping ratios can be relatively high, although examples from other non-precious metal operations (such as large iron ore and copper pits) can also be found. As a consequence, it is not surprising that in most large (deep) open pit mines, relatively small changes in slope angle (of the order of two or three degrees can translate into changes in project value measured in the tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars. Understanding how this potential value can be realised, and quantifying the associated risks, should be one of the key outcomes of modern slope engineering practice. In striving for optimised slope angles, therefore, mining companies and their specialist consultants are increasingly turning to more sophisticated methods of engineering open pit walls. This paper summarises contemporary slope engineering practice as well as some of the key technical issues that are either currently being researched or will need to be researched in the future. It is written in the context of the slope engineering process; namely, data collection and analysis, failure mode identification and stability assessment, slope design, slope formation, and slope (face) mapping and monitoring (the latter two activities being the primary on-going data collection functions that close the design loop).

Coal has been mined in New South Wales for nearly 200 years and prior to 1970 the vast majority of this coal was mined from underground mines using bord and pillar or similar systems.Since 1970 there have been two notable changes in coal production trends in New South Wales as can be seen from Figure 1.1. The steady growth in coal mined by open cut methods. Open cut output grew from about seven per cent of the State's output in 1970/71 to 43 per cent in 1990/91.2. The steady growth in coal mined by the longwall method. longwall output grew from negligible amounts in 1970/71 to 48 per cent of underground production in 1990/91. mines operating longwall units produced 61 per cent of underground production in 1990/91.

The long-term production schedule of open pit mines that maximises the net present value (NPV) of a given project relies on the proper design of phases (pushbacks) within the ultimate pit limits. There is not a phase design algorithm applied in the mining industry today that gives yearly production schedules that are optimum.The majority of phase design algorithms currently in use by the mining industry aims at grouping the blocks that fall within the ultimate pit limits into phases such that the average value of the blocks within each phase decrease as the size of the phases increase. Current phase design methods are typically based on a pit limit optimisation algorithm, originally introduced by Lerchs and Grossmann (LG) in 1965. To obtain multiple pit shells to be used for the phase design, the LG pit limit algorithm successively applied to economic block models by changing the price of the commodity or some other factor that properly parameterises the size of the pit. These modified economic block models are developed by predetermining the destination for each block in the model based on a breakeven analysis and highest economic outcome between alternative destinations. Phase designs determined by these existing algorithms may be suboptimal if a given project utilises multiple processing facilities for metal recovery and particularly if these facilities have restrictions (constraints) that require blending of attributes in the feed. To overcome these problems in obtaining phases that optimise overall production schedules, a new algorithm is developed at the Colorado School of Mines. The algorithm determines the phases of an open pit mine by taking into account multiple process options for the blocks and period by period blending requirements. This algorithm has been implemented within a software program (the software) and is being prototyped successfully in the design of improved pushbacks at a copper mine in South America and on a gold mine in Nevada. This presentation will demonstrate the shortcomings of the traditional phase design methodologies based on comparison of results coming from the new approach versus the traditional.

A strategic mine plan is a fundamental part of any mining operation. It must provide a realistic and operative extraction and processing schedule, and yield the highest value for the business. For open pit mines, the problem can be modelled as a set of blocks representing the deposit, for each of which we need to decide if it is going to be mined, if so, when and where it will be sent (process, stock or dump).This problem can be proven to be of NP-Hard complexity. The traditional approach used by mining engineers to tackle this complexity is to separate the problem into more tractable components, solving each separately. The first step is to use the Lerchs-Grossman (LG) algorithm to obtain the final pit limit, as well as a set of optimised pit shells (nested pits), using different input prices. Then, using this input, operational phases are designed. Third, the set of phases can be used as an input for a phase-bench style optimisation, usually using a mathematical programming-based algorithm.There are, however, several problems with this approach. First, dividing the problem into simpler parts has the consequence that any compromises made at early stages limit the potential value left for the following steps. Second, LG is a static algorithm, with no concept of the time-value of money, capacity limits, opportunity costs, etc. Phase design is essentially a manual step, for which nested pits provide insufficient information in practice, and therefore the quality of the result in terms of potential net present value (NPV) depends strongly on the experience and expertise of the designer. This means that key input data such as commodity prices, different processes capacities and mine movement limits, are considered only at scheduling, when there is little room for optimisation. This sequential approach limits the potential value in each step, where a simplified problem is addressed, instead of addressing the real, and more complex problem, which is dynamic and should be solved as a whole.We present in this paper an algorithm, and its commercial software implementation, that addresses the dynamic problem as a whole, simultaneously and automatically creating a high-value strategic mine plan that adheres to basic operational constraints, determining dynamic cut-off grades and delivering a set of phases which can serve as a much stronger guide than nested pits for the final design. We discuss some of the key elements of the algorithm and propose a new methodology for strategic mine planning, where phase design dynamically responds to mining strategy definition.
