Classical electroslag remelting of consumable electrodes is a drop-by-drop melt feeding through a slag layer into a renewing molten metal bath, slowly solidifying into a homogeneous, dense, defectfree ingot in a copper water-cooled mould. The new look at the additive nature of the electroslag remelting (ESR) process in a protective atmosphere allowed us to formulate the principles of a comprehensive thermodynamic-based model that can predict dynamic changes in slag and metal composition at certain ingot remelting. The model considers drastically different slag-to-metal mass ratios at the beginning and end of remelting and predicts gas, slag and metal composition in a chain of thermodynamic subsystems. Despite consisting of calcium fluoride and stable oxides, the ESR slag can oxidise main and active elements from steel and alloys (primarily aluminium, titanium and silicon) due to chemical reactions between slag and metal. ESR is not an electrochemical process in its nature. However, slags are ionic melts and deviation in their composition causes a change in their properties, affecting both operation mode and ingot quality. Another important understanding derived from the modern metallurgy technological route is that the ability to refine metal from impurities is not a priority for the ESR because consumable electrode has already passed all stages of refining and deep degassing at ladle treatment that changes ESR slags engineering principles. The critical importance became slag’s ability to generate process heat and keep the melting composition in the metal bath unchanged (except for non-metallic inclusions assimilation). Slag engineering for ESR required a compromise between chemical inertness to a metal composition and desired physical properties deriving from technological reasons. The Directed Chemical Bonds Concept (DCBC) in a multicomponent oxide system was used to build predictive models of electric conductivity and the melting temperature of fluoride-oxide slag based on their chemical composition. Both models help to design a customised composition of effective slags for steel and alloy groups or individual grades, and they are significant steps in the development of a comprehensive model of electroslag remelting.

The prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium has been reported by Denny, Robson, and Irwin in two papers. The first was published in 1937; the second, in 1939. The results definitely established that silicosis was prevented in animals by the inhalation of small quantities of aluminium. The present communication records subsequent progress in this field of research.

A question for immediate consideration was: Is aluminium harmful to man when inhaled as a fine powder? While the animal experiments were reassuring, since they conclusively showed the powder to be innocuous when breathed by animals, it was, nevertheless, desirable to have additional reassurance with regard to its effect upon human beings.Through the courtesy of the Aluminium Company of America and especially the valued interest in this problem displayed by that Company's Director of Research, Dr. Francis C. Frary, a study was made of the records pertaining to the health of a group of 125 employees who had for many years been engaged in the manufacture of finely powdered, metallic aluminium for the paint and ink industries. The conditions were such that these employees had inhaled varying and oft-times very dense concentrations of this powder daily over periods ranging from 6 to 23 years, the average 101 the group being 12 years. X-ray pictures of their chests showed no abnormalities attributable to aluminium. Their general health seemed better than that of the 3,000 workers in other sections of the plant. In fact, the early films of three employees in this group of 125 showed shadows suggestive of minimal tuberculosis, which shadows were not discernible in films taken after considerable periods of exposure to aluminium powder.The harmlessness of aluminium was; by this study, reasonably well established at the outset, a finding subsequently verified by Ontario research on humans.PROPOSAL TO TREAT HUMAN SILICOSISBased upon these findings, a proposal to treat silicotics with aluminium was discussed by officials of the Mclntyre Mine and the Banting Institute.

An important aspect of geometallurgy is quantifying mineral processing attributes, which leads to improved orebody understanding. One of these attributes is flotation performance. Several methods have been developed as indicators for flotation performance, including batch testing leading to kinetic information and the standard grade-recovery curve. This paper makes a preliminary statistical comparison between a newly proposed geometallurgical batch flotation procedure and the æstandardÆ batch flotation test commonly used to measure flotation performance in the laboratory. The new test uses much less material than the standard test, and is much faster. It is concluded that the new method follows the final recovery of the standard method well, suggesting that it will be effective in reflecting ore variability for geometallurgical purposes. Comparison of the methods based on the full grade-recovery curve shows less agreement, but this may be due to the fact that the curve is sensitive to the particular experimental set-up and conditions, which make such comparisons quantitatively challenging. Recent work on computerised mineral resource databases at the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited has concentrated on the development of the GERM, REGCHEM, and MINLIT databases, and their integration in a Geographic Information System using MapInfo software on an IBM-compatible microcomputer local area network. GERM (GEological Resource Map) is a mineral deposit inventory with national coverage and more than 10 300 entries. REGCHEM (REGional Exploration GeoCHEMistry) is a database of stream sediment analyses from open-file mining company reports, containing more than 14 000 sample sites from the Coromandel and west Nelson regions. MINLIT (MINeral LITerature bibliography) is an annotated bibliography of literature on topics relating to the exploration and geology of mineral deposits in New Zealand, and includes more than 5000 entries for published books and papers, and unpublished mining company reports, university theses, and government reports. Master sets of GERM and MINLIT continue to be maintained on a VAX mainframe network but REGCHEM is operated only in the PC environment using the Microsoft ACCESS database management system software.

To the advances of this relatively new technology a substantial contribution has been provided by the research being carried out at the University of Cagliari on samples of granite rocks from different Sardinian stone quarries. On the basis of field experiments and laboratory test data, the mechanism of diamond wire cutting has been assessed. In particular the influence of the rock features and operational variables on tool performance (cutting rate and bead wear) has been Elucidated.

Nickel phytomining is a low cost alternative to traditional nickel mining and a complementary process to existing mining operations in areas with low-grade nickel soils or nickel waste material. The process of nickel phytomining consists of growing selected hyperaccumulator plant species (‘metal crops’) on Ni-rich (ultramafic) soils, followed by harvesting and incineration of the biomass to produce a ‘bio-ore’ from which Ni salts or Ni metal may be recovered (Chaney et al, 2007). The ‘metal crops’ are selected on the basis of high biomass yield combined with high Ni concentrations (>1 per cent) in the above-ground biomass (Chaney et al, 2007). Currently, Alyssum murale and A. corsicum have been used for Ni phytomining trials, mainly undertaken in Albania and USA (Bani et al, 2015; Li et al, 2003), while the agronomy of <10 species has been tested in temperate regions (Nkrumah et al, 2016). Nickel phytomining has high economic potential; however, large-scale demonstrations are needed to provide ‘real-life’ evidence for commercial operations (van der Ent et al, 2015). Unrealised opportunities exist in tropical regions for commercial scale Ni phytomining. To date, the agronomy of tropical ‘metal crops’ has not been tested. The Kucing Liar skarn deposit is located in the Ertsberg mining district, which also contains other skarn deposits and the Grasberg porphyry copper û gold deposit. The Ertsberg district is located in the province of Irian Jaya, IndonesiaÆs easternmost province. Mining development began in the Ertsberg district in 1972 with the mining of the Ertsberg deposit. Daily production in the district now averages about 230 000 tonnes of ore, with the bulk of the ore coming from the Grasberg open pit and the balance from underground mining of skarn deposits. During 1998, 45 218 additional metres of drilling were conducted to delineate and understand the Kucing Liar orebody. The deposit was first intersected in drill holes in 1994 and then was intersected in underground workings located about 1000 metres from the discovery drill hole in 1995. Initially, the two intersections were thought to be different orebodies but are now realised to be different parts of the same orebody. The Kucing Liar deposit consists of magnetite û copper û gold replacement and skarn mineralisation in favorable Tertiary and Cretaceous units. The deposit is approximately 2000 metres in length and averages about 200 to 250 metres in thickness. The width varies from 400 to 600 metres. Drilling in 1998 was directed towards delineating the deposit on its NW and SE ends and to determine its down dip extension. Reserves for the deposit at the end of 1998 stand at 320 million tonnes at 1.4 per cent copper, 1.4 g/t gold, and 5.3 g/t silver. Many important questions remain to be answered concerning the relationship of the Kucing Liar orebody to the major faults in the district and to the Grasberg intrusive complex which contains the Grasberg orebody. Continued exciting developments are anticipated as work to understand the deposit by drilling and geologic study continues.

The paper gives details of the performance of a 6-ft. by 6-ft. grate discharge ball mill which was converted into a rod mill of the overflow type and then into a grate discharge rod mill. Proposals for further alterations are outlined.INTRODUCTIONThe mill of King Island Scheelite (1947) Limited recovers scheelite by gravity methods.Crushed ore at the rate of 34 tons per hour is divided between two mills. (6 ft. by 6 ft. and 8 ft. by 6 ft. respectively), the mill discharges being pumped to a common distributor which feeds seven Hummer Screens. Each screen has three 4-ft. by 2-ft. Ton-cap sections and repulping compartments are provided. The screen oversize is returned to the mills whilst the screen undersize is finished grinding section product. A third (6 ft. by 6 ft.) mill regrinding the coarser table tailings also discharges into the common Hummer Screen Distributor.The screen undersize is pumped to a bowl classifier which separates at 200 mesh. The bowl classifier sands are treated on tables whilst the bowl classifier overflow, after thickening, is treated in the slime plant by flotation. The flotation concentrate is further concentrated on vanners and slime tables.A recovery of 80 per cent. is possible by tabling whereas only 50 per cent can be recovered in the slime section. The object of comminution is, therefore, to reduce all the new feed to less than a certain mesh (22 mesh Tyler) with the production of a minimum quantity of minus 200 mesh material. cheelite is, a very friable heavy mineral (Sp.Gr. 6'0) and is therefore susceptible to overgrinding. I should like to congratulate Dr. Salamy on his most informative paper.Under the heading of "future development" Dr. Salamy states the intention of using 3 in. lifters. In this connection I should like to mention one or two of our findings at the Croesus Plant of North Kalgurli (1912) Limited. We have converted a 5i ft. x 11 ft. grate discharge ball mill to a high level overflow rod mill. When we were considering this conversion we explored the literature and decided on using 2t in. lifters on alternate liners-the results were not encouraging. "As the cost in time and money of data from sensors and small-scale tests has reduced, additional challenges have arisen. Although many mine data sets are not big relative to those in other disciplines, they are complex in other ways, and becoming too large to manage efficiently on personal computers. In order to take advantage of the opportunity offered by increased data, a diverse team from Universidad de Chile and CSIRO Mineral Resources has developed a virtual geometallurgical laboratory to support the computational requirements linking data acquisition with data-driven business decisions. A particular focus to date has been the development of user-guided workflow ensembles to enable comparison between plausible geometallurgical hypotheses.A case study has been undertaken using publicly available data from the Rocklea Dome iron deposit in Western Australia. A hypothetical mining schedule was produced from geochemical and hyperspectral drill core/chips data via the following steps: data preprocessing, exploratory data analysis, geochemical interpolation, block modelling, ultimate open pit design and scheduling. The key outcome of this study was the integration of workflow stages through new plug-in methods or modification of existing software. A better connection between laboratory- and pilot-scale test results, and heap bioleaching performance can be achieved by generating reliable information on the fundamental microbial, chemical and physical processes that occur in heaps and incorporating this information into a comprehensive and robust model. More efficient heap bioleaching, particularly of chalcopyrite, has the potential to add value to the mining industry as well as deliver attractive environmental and social benefits to the communities within which those companies operate.The results of fundamental chemical and microbiological studies of the leaching mechanism, the temperature dependence of chalcopyrite bioleaching, and the optimisation of leaching conditions are described with examples from full-scale heaps. The development and application of a number of novel techniques and tools has assisted our understanding of heap subprocesses mineralogy, hydrology, chemistry and microbiology. The heap bioleaching model HeapSim, which embodies a large number of effects not previously accounted for in other models, continues to be refined and has been applied successfully to the study of several heap bioleach systems.

Ongoing mining of the East Ertsberg Skarn System orebody below the Gunung Bijih Timur and Intermediate Ore Zone caves has been relatively successful and a ramp up to 80 000 t/d was achieved in the Deep Ore Zone Mine. However, the distribution of production, the overall drawpoint availability as well as the rate of change of the cave back profile has not followed the anticipated path. Several key factors influencing cave growth and progress, grade variation, fragmentation, wet muck and surface subsidence have been recognised over the life-of-mine that now have to be taken into account for planning the later stages of mining.The paper will discuss the influence of geological controls of lithology and structure – how this as well as other contributing aspects have impacted ore flow, contributing to some of the widespread panel damage, and been a key factor in compacted draw columns and caused an accelerated appearance of water ingress. This in turn has rapidly changed the distribution of wet drawpoints requiring remote mucking and special controls that also affect the call from the remaining dry drawpoints. In 1955 the annual production of steel at Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd., Port Kembla was 1.2 million tonne and over the following two decades this had progressively increased to the present capacity of 5.4 million tonne per annum. This increase in productivity has also been accompanied by important developments in steelmaking technology and these are explained in the chronological order in which they have taken place. Reference is made to the use of oxygen in open hearth furnaces, the B.O.S. process, the Argon-Oxygen decarburisation process for stainless steel, vacuum degassing and continuous casting. When the vacuum degassing and continuous casting units are commissioned, the Port Kembla Works will have achieved a standard of steelmaking technology equal to any in the world.

The Resource Management Act 1991 provides for activities to be classified as permitted, controlled, restricted discretionary, discretionary, non-complying or prohibited in district and regional plans. This paper looks at the use of the prohibited activity status to restrict, in particular, mining. Often the use of prohibited activity status for mining appears to have no basis other than the negative perceptions that the local community and/or the planner drafting the plan has toward mining and quarrying.   The paper will address the current appeal regarding the use of prohibited activity status now before the Court of Appeal, and the history to the litigation. The relevance of the outcome of the appeal to the minerals sector will also be explained.

The project management and construction plans adopted by Davy McKee for the Cooper Basin Liquids Project resulted in a project notable for the Relatively short duration from initiation of the design through to liquids production. Two locations were involved, one at Moomba in the far northeast of South Australia some 800 km from Adelaide, and the other at Port Bonython some 40 km from Whyalla. Total expenditure by the owners at the two sites was in excess of $600 million. Matters covered include organisation, transport, construction, industrial relations, project services and commissioning.

The Odysseus Project is part of the high-grade Cosmos Nickel Complex that lies 30 km north of Leinster. The Odysseus definitive feasibility study (DFS) was approved by the Western Areas’ board in October 2018. Early works commenced in January 2019 with rehabilitation of the existing underground infrastructure. In June 2022 Western Areas was acquired by IGO Ltd. The project is now well advanced to meet its target of first concentrate. The project included the construction of a haulage shaft. The design of the hoisting equipment and the shaft barrel evolved from the initial DFS design stage to the final execution, as the data were made available from the initial investigation to the data gathered during execution (although this did not change from its initial concept). The design philosophy for the haulage shaft incorporated, from the beginning a multidisciplinary approach with inputs from three main areas involved in such projects, namely excavation techniques, geotechnical assessments, and infrastructure construction. This interaction is a fundamental component for the success of such a critical project. In fact, each of these three areas influences each other in a cyclical manner, triggering a continuous review of the project inputs and outputs, while maintaining the original project goals: the design of an infrastructure able to deliver the desired throughput. The throughput dictates the infrastructure that needs to be built, which in turn controls the size of the shaft. The key assumption applied to this is that the rock mass can accommodate the excavation void, and the excavation technique with its tolerances and limits that ultimately need to be verified back with the initial assumptions used for the infrastructure design. The aim of the paper is to present a case study of the experience gained with the Odysseus hoisting shaft and to propose a possible logic path for similar projects elsewhere.

Project Controls cost and scheduling systems provide the Leaders with timely information on which to base their decisions.The Client (Owner) will invest up to three per cent of the project cost on Project Controls. To ensure that this investment is effective, the Owner or Manager must have a clear understanding of the information required from the Project controls systems. If appointing a single Managing Contractor, the Owner or Manager must stipulate what is and what is not required from the Project Controls Systems. There are numerous computer programs available for scheduling and cost control and it is important to select systems which best serve the Owner's needs.

Project delivery strategies are determined by project context, business case requirements, scale of project, market conditions, ownerÆs capability and preference, contractorÆs experience, resource and skill availability, project location and type of project or facility.Successful project management requires the setting of coherent, effective and realistic business objectives and success criteria. The management team needs to lead, prioritise, resource, align, plan, track and communicate the processes that enable the realisation of these business objectives and success criteria.For any given project there is a unique balance between selection of a simple project delivery strategy that minimises interfaces and a complex strategy that necessarily engages the use of expertise and experience from numerous parties. The right balance for a project between these "book-end cases" is a function of how the project owner or managing contractor defines its objectives and chooses to manage risk, cost, schedule and project quality, in the context of the conditions affecting the project.Selection of an effective project delivery strategy requires a detailed appreciation of the range of external and internal environmental / shaping factors which influence the project. These factors include the project constraints imposed by the business, market or operational environments and the selection of an effective mix of primary (head contract), secondary (mix of vertical and horizontal packages) and tertiary (type of individual contract) strategies. The selection of the primary, secondary and tertiary strategies also shapes the project, the size and responsibilities of the ownerÆs team and the framework for delivery of outcomes.How does an owner or prime contractor decide? What is the optimum for a given project? Those with operations management backgrounds will have different views to those with project and construction management backgrounds.Is the simplest practical approach the best approach? Each and every interface needs to be managed.The owner will want a very experienced team that is engaged directly with the owner. The team will have a track record of successfully performing projects using contractors skilled in their respective disciplines and selected using competitive tendering on brilliantly designed scopes of work and good contract terms, with a fully defined project scope and appropriate schedule, for which all significant risks have been addressed and no scope changes are outstanding. Budget and schedule will be expected to have been developed with a full understanding of the scope, situation, risk management requirements etc.The problem is that these conditions rarely exist. The challenge in selection of a project delivery strategy is to resolve how best to address the inadequacies between the ideal case and the present reality. Successfully managing project development and construction has often been a challenge in the mining industry. This is reflected in the number of projects that have taken longer to build, exceeded their budgets and then struggled to achieve the performance targets so confidently predicted beforehand. This paper outlines the fundamental elements of project management necessary to deliver mining projects on time and on budget, and performing as originally intended. It looks at areas such as the study process, project planning, team selection and structure, project controls, types of contracts used and approaches to contract management.
