The Sangdong Tungsten/Molybdenum Deposit is located in the Republic of Korea and was discovered in 1916. At this time Korea was a colony of Japan. It was mined for two years after discovery closing in 1918. Full production recommenced in 1933, and from that point until 1945, it was the major source of tungsten for armour plate for the Japanese military. After World War 2 the US government ran the mine until late 1946. The mine operation then passed to Korean ownership but production ceased during the Korean War and did not recommence until late 1953. The mine ceased operation in 1992 due to low metal prices. From the late 1960s to the time of closure, Sangdong was the largest tungsten mine in the world (Kim, 2002). An understanding of changing mining methods over time has been critical in assessing the potential of redeveloping the Sangdong Deposit.

This paper will introduce some innovative strategies for simulator training that are intended to improve the level of safety and operational performance of heavy equipment operators. The key strategy is to design simulator training to deliver improved work performance outcomes. This strategy is underpinned by a process for engaging workers in knowledge discovery and transfer that has been developed as an outcome of an Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funded project conducted at open cut coal mines in Australia. The process is expected to deliver improvements in the safety and operational performance of heavy equipment operators by informing training content about how experienced operators manage unexpected situations around the site. Tapping into the tacit knowledge that experienced operators gather over time can provide site specific and timely information about situational cues used to manage the unexpected. This type of information complements basic skills training by helping the trainee understand the operational context in which the acquired skills will be applied. Inexperienced operators have traditionally gained experience through their own actions, observing the actions of others and by taking the advice of mentors who have æbeen there, done thatÆ and developed operational decision making skills for safe and productive work performance. Leadership and mentoring techniques that contribute to effective knowledge delivery will also be discussed.Other simulator training strategies include refresher training, change management, emergency response training and testing the usability of new equipment and technologies prior to their introduction on-site. A key challenge ahead for the resources sector is the development of knowledge elicitation techniques that suit the operational workforce. The first 12 m diameter rakeless thickener in the Australian gold mining industry was installed to treat plant tailings at the St Ives gold plant in April 2000. The plant processes approximately 3.2 M tonnes of ore producing about 430 000 oz of gold per annum using conventional crushing, grinding, gravity and carbon in pulp processing methods.The main benefit sought from the thickener was to improve water recovery in the plant and provide water for a 55 000 oz per annum heap leach operation. The thickener design indicated that more than 128 m3/h of overflow water could be returned directly into the plantÆs water circuit, relieving the demand on the borefields. The resultant surplus in the water circuit would then be available for the heap leach project. Based on laboratory and pilot plant scale tests conducted by EIMCO the thickener was designed to handle up to 700 m3/h of tailings slurry (450 tph of solids) with a 40 per cent oxide component in the ore blend. The normal plant throughput is 565 m3/h of slurry (400 tph of solids). Gold mineralisation in most areas at St Ives comprises quartz-sulphide vein and breccia lodes with common albite-biotite-chlorite alteration assemblages. There are well developed supergene gold horizons in the clay-oxide profile above most of the deposits (Osborne, 2002). This results in a wide variety of ore types being treated. At times 40 - 50 per cent of the ore may be oxide in nature. After some commissioning difficulties associated with instrumentation, the thickener has performed satisfactorily although it has not reached its design capacity. The maximum density achieved under normal operating conditions with 20 per cent oxide ore is about two per cent below the design. The thickenerÆs performance deteriorates further with increasing amounts of oxide ore in the blend. The thickener has provided sufficient water for the successful operation of the heap leach and has also provided some down stream benefits for the gold plant by way of pH and cyanide conditioned thickener overflow water.

The value of Raman spectroscopy to undertake mineral and chemical characterisation of iron ores was assessed by applying the technique to representative samples of banded iron-formations (BIF) and a BIF-derived, martite-goethite ore. The common iron oxides haematite, magnetite and goethite as well as gangue minerals such as quartz and carbonates all show distinct Raman spectra that enables these phases to be easily detected and mapped in situ for either samples prepared as polished blocks or unprepared material. Raman spectroscopy also offers the potential of in situ chemical characterisation. Shifts in the excitation bands of carbonate detected in BIF were related to the Mg content of Fe-carbonate and confirmed the first world-wide occurrence of a high Mg-bearing siderite (pistomesite) in BIF.The discriminatory power of Raman spectroscopy coupled with the potential of the technique to offer large-scale (volumetric) characterisation of iron ore will be of great value not only to the existing BID and CID ore types, but also to the newly emerging magnetite iron deposits (MID).

PasmincoÆs Century Concentrator in North West Queensland commenced operations in November 1999. The nameplate production capacity of 500 000 tpa of zinc metal production in concentrate was achieved in August 2002. Completion of the production ramp up was successful due to the culmination of a number of initiatives throughout 2001 and 2002. Mine to mill interaction to understand and eliminate head grade related bottlenecks affecting Concentrator production and reduce feed variation. Grinding circuit process development û operating and process control strategies to improve stability and reduce grind size to support zinc recovery. Pumping upgrades to control spillage in ultrafine zinc flotation Low density zinc flotation strategy û to improve silica-sphalerite separation to improve zinc recovery while maintaining acceptable silica in final concentrate. Flotation circuit process development û froth crowders, froth cameras and reagent control strategies to improve primary zinc flotation performance. Review and implementation of longer campaigns between planned shutdowns to improve availability. Team reorganisation û to improve setting and implementation of metallurgical strategies. This paper describes these initiatives and their contribution in achieving the production target. It also notes the ball mill motor failures that delayed the successful achievement of the ramp up, and CenturyÆs response to minimise the production impact. The paper also outlines the capital improvement program that was implemented to improve zinc recovery to design 82.5 per cent recovery once the production rate had been achieved.

The GPM Gold Operation has been employing an Albion Process™ plant at its Sotk (Zod) gold mine in Armenia since 2014. Long term data from the operation is now being published for the first time. The data presented includes concentrate throughput, as feed to the Albion Process™ plant (tonnes per day), sulphur grade in concentrate (% S), total sulphide sulphur oxidation in the Albion Process™ plant (% SOx) and gold recovery from Albion Process™ plant residues (%). The data provides a basis for evaluation of the effectiveness of the commissioning, ramp up and operation of the Albion Process™ plant. Notwithstanding the impact of a slower concentrator commissioning than expected, the plant demonstrates Series 1 behaviour on McNulty ramp up curves, indicating successful commissioning and fast ramp up. Interrogation of the data and operational experience indicates that this successful operation is a result of a process that is flexible, robust and stable, one that was designed well based on solid testwork results and pilot plant trials during the study phase undertaken by Glencore Technology and Core Resources, and where the local operators were provided with appropriate training in operation of the plant. Energy Resources of Australia Ltd - Ranger Mine is located about 255 kilometres east of Darwin in the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory. The Ranger project is surrounded by Kakadu National Park which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. . Ranger Mine operates the largest uranium mine and processing plant in Australia. It is designed to produce 3000 tonnes of uranium oxide per year, but presently is producing a little less than one half that figure due to the depressed uranium market. The safety performance of the employees and Ranger as a whole continues to improve. The lost time injuries (LTI) have significantly reduced from 74 in 1985 to five in 1994. The total days lost due to LTIs have gone from 1543 to 14. These significant improvements have reflected directly on workers' compensation premiums in which a four-fold reduction has occurred. It is estimated that the actual monetary saving to the company is about $1.3 million per year and directly reports to the profit of the company. There is also an obvious and significant reduction in the less quantifiable costs such as the suffering of the injured employees and cost to society. The paper will review the various initiatives introduced and assess their effectiveness. Performance improvement is primarily dependent on the commitment, introduction of various initiatives and the subsequent change in workplace culture.

The general ranges of validity of some distribution functions are assessed from their behaviour with 119 sets of fragmentation data from bench blasting obtained by sieving. The emphasis is on determining the lower size/passing limit that the size-scaled Rosin-Rammler, Grady and Swebrec functions, and their bi-component versions, can represent with reasonable precision. By fitting these functions to the data using different weights, the accuracy of the fit varies in the different size/passing zones, so that an overall knowledge of the capacity of the function is obtained across the whole size range, from the coarse zone to the fines. Reasonable ranges of use of bimodal Rosin-Rammler and extended Swebrec (all of them five-parameter, bi-component distributions) are, in terms of percentage passing p, 99 > p > 2 per cent (up to 100 per cent for the extended Swebrec), or 90 > p > 0.5 per cent, in which the expected error of the calculated size is below 15 per cent in the extremes of the range, and less than five per cent in most of the central range; maximum errors (ie errors that will only rarely be exceeded) are typically less than 50 per cent in the central range, and up to about 100 per cent in the extremes. Ranges of use for the Swebrec and the size-scaled Rosin-Rammler (three-parameter distributions), with only slightly larger errors than the bi-components, are 100 > p > 5 per cent or 80 > p > 2 per cent. The classical two-parameter Rosin-Rammler can be used in the range 95 > p > 20 per cent or 90 > p > 10 per cent, with expected and maximum errors less than about 15 per cent and 100 per cent respectively.CITATION:Sanchidrián, J A, 2015. The Bulli and Wongawilli Seams, the two principal sources of coking coal for the Port Kembla steelworks of Australian Iron & Steel Pty. Ltd., vary in rank and in type over the Southern and South Western Coalfields.The Bulli Seam, ranging widely in type, produces coke varying from weak to strong. The Wongawilli Seam, more consistent in type, produces coke of more consistent strength, but considerably less strong than that from the best Bulli Seam coal.Plans of seam variation show the regional trends in rank and type for each seam.The strongest coke is derived from coal containing between 45 and 55 per cent vitrinite, m.m.f. This is obtainable from the Bulli Seam in a zone embracing Bulli and Appin collieries.A satisfactory correlation is achieved between vitrinite content and coke stability and hardness, enabling prediction of coke strength for Southern Coalfield coals.The use of vitrinite reflectance, as an indicator of rank, in addition to type to predict coke strengths is at present hampered by lack of data, particularly in the South Western Coalfield. Nevertheless, data available at present allow the use of both variables and give better correlations with coke strengths than type alone.A spread of comprehensive data across both coalfields will enable advance assessment of cokes produced from coals having known rank and type. Blending to a ranktype specification for optimum coke strengths would allow the best use of the coal reserves of the coalfields.

Prefeasibility planning and cost estimation of conveyor systems has historically been undertaken by comparing fi xed plant transport requirements to that of similar systems in service. This paper describes the development of a prefeasibility conveyor technical design and cost estimation application using Microsoft Excel Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) platform. The application tool known as D-Convey (Dachshund Convey) was developed with the goal enabling the end user: to develop a technical model for conceptualised conveyor systems, to perform economic analysis on the developed technical model, and to conduct a comparative and risk analysis. An Excel VBA based platform was utilised to draw upon both the analytical and graphical capabilities of a spreadsheet. Some of the features of D-Convey system include a revolutionary dynamic graphical help system, known as the 'information pane' in lieu of traditional help fi les as well as the use of familiar graphical user interface elements such as the MS Offi ce 2007 task ribbon. The D-Convey system incorporates material database allowing for mass handling prefeasibility estimation in other industries; it has been validated at a local quarry.

Compact and field portable infrared spectrometers have been increasingly used over the past few years by an exploration industry constantly searching for a technological edge and the ability to more accurately and rapidly assess project areas. In particular, this technology allows large amounts of data to be rapidly collected on-site and sample mineralogy, mineral crystallinity and mineral composition to be quickly assessed. In recent years, short wave infrared (SWIR) reflectance spectroscopy has proved useful in a wide range of geological environments and at various stages of exploration programs, from grass roots reconnaissance through drilling programs and resource evaluation. Unfortunately these data have frequently been analysed and interpreted in isolation using time consuming data analysis techniques removed from the realities of a fast moving exploration industry. This paper presents new analysis techniques which allow these data to be efficiently integrated in the exploration program. Although SWIR data contain a wealth of mineral information it is impractical to use this information in its raw form. A more effective approach involves the extraction of key characteristics of these data (ie mineralogy, mineral composition and crystallinity) as numerical values, and the integration of this ædigital mineralogyÆ with more conventional exploration datasets (eg geochemistry, coordinate data, etc). This paper demonstrates that the integrated analysis of sound geological observations, geochemical, spatial and spectral data can quickly lead to a greater understanding of the nature and distribution of target mineralisation. As a first step, software driven pattern matching routines enable the identification of the major clay mineral species in a series of samples (eg kaolinite, montmorillonite and sericite). This allows the major alteration facies and their spatial distribution to be identified. Quantification of diagnostic absorption feature characteristics then allows more accurate determinations of mineralogy to be made (eg mineral composition and crystallinity). Examples of the application of SWIR analysis for alteration mapping from selected porphyry and epithermal systems from around the Pacific Rim are discussed. The data presented are derived from a variety of locations and sample types including drill core, ridge and spur rock chip samples, soil samples and geochemical pulps. In these large alteration systems, the spectral data can be used to describe and map the distribution of various alteration facies as many of these are characterised by clay and phyllosilicate mineral assemblages and are detected by SWIR analysis (eg smectite, chlorite, biotite, illite, muscovite, kaolinite, dickite, pyrophyllite, alunite, etc). In addition, the ability to evaluate even subtle trends in mineral crystallinity and composition is often vital in these systems when looking for vectors towards higher temperature parts of the system. In addition to detailed evaluation of mineralogy, the integration of digital mineralogy data with geochemical data leads to the ability to describe not only geochemically anomalous intersections or regions but also to recognise associations between subtle changes in mineralogy and target mineralisation. This is often important because understanding these mineralogical associations can lead to more accurate targeting and rapid assessment of the project.

The flow function of an iron ore material governs its flowability characteristics in material handling chains within the resource industry. A uniaxial compression test is able to obtain a flow function more rapidly comparing to the Jenike direct shear test; nevertheless, the results often exhibit lower rankings using the former method. This study aims to investigate the fundamental stress states within the test specimen that lead to this phenomenon, and to introduce a new uniform density specimen preparation method for a uniaxial compression test, in order to achieve comparative flow functions as for a Jenike direct shear test. The minimisation of the wall friction effect and achievement of the critical state when preparing a uniaxial specimen are explicitly discussed. Experimental investigations on flow functions of a suite of Australian iron ore samples were conducted using both the uniform density uniaxial compression test and the Jenike direct shear test. Results from both methods were found to be comparable, providing the specimen exhibits cohesive flow behaviours. Looking back 25 years, the role of the drill and blast engineer in an Australian mine seemed relatively simple, with the primary focal points being scheduling of the drill rigs, oversize control, and budget control with respect to consumption of both explosives and drill consumables. The choice of explosive selection was relatively simple, though many mines were becoming involved in trials of slurry explosives, emulsion blends, and low density ANFO blends. Guidelines to assist the engineer towards specific fragmentation targets were scarce, environmental constraints were light, and computers were rarely found on the desks of any mining engineers. Wall control blasting was in its infancy, with the bulk of attention being given to appropriate slope design and little real attention given to factors such as explosive distribution, and optimum delay timing and sequencing. Quantitative measurement of blasting performance was rare. The science of blasting, for fragmentation control, wall control, and environmental impact control was about to be born, and was heralded in those years by intense efforts by the explosive manufacturers and a proliferation of research centres throughout the world. Since the early 1980s, the role of the Australian drill and blast engineer has gone through a major metamorphosis, and currently requires a greater depth of scientific understanding than any other specialisation within mining engineering.

Procedures employing thiocyanate and dithiol complexes of molybdenum have been developed for the determination of the metal in the presence of large quantities of ferric iron. The procedures are developed for field application and it is possible to complete 200 analyses per day with laboratory accuracy. Use is made of sulphuric acid extraction and ascorbic acid reduction in the case of the thiocyanate procedure whilst the reducing system in the dithiol procedure is potassium iodide-sodium sulphite. Using a simple photometer the range of determination possible is 0-10~g for the thiocyanate procedure and 0-5 g for dithioI.INTRODUCTIONOf the many colorimetric procedures that have been developed for the determination of molybdenum only those using the thiocyanate or toluene-3, 4-dithiol complexes of the metal are sufficiently free from interference to be of use in geochemical prospecting. Rapid methods based on both these complexes 'have been developed at the. Broken Hill Division of The University of New South Wales as part of a general programme designed to improve geochemical procedures. Whilst speed rather than high accuracy is the important factor in prospecting, the aim of the programme is to develop procedures which will allow determination of 200· samples per man-day without loss of normal laboratory accuracy for the methods concerned.In most geochemical procedures visual estimation of a coloured complex is used in the determination of the quantity of metal present. At the high rate of sample determination of the improved methods this procedure places severe strain on the eyes. After a methane explosion in a coal mine a pre-determined crisis management procedure is instigated. As the process rapidly evolves the inevitable question arises - are personnel trapped underground, are they alive and can they be rescued without putting the lives of the rescue crew at risk? This is a very emotive question with many sub-questions such as; could anybody have survived, is there the potential for a secondary explosion and is there a `window of opportunity' before that secondary explosion occurs?To determine if that window of opportunity exists two fundamental elements must be in place; a method of determining the atmosphere at key points in the mine and a method of predicting the course of change of that atmosphere with respect to time. The first element can be achieved if the tube bundle system is intact and drawing samples from known points, alternatively boreholes can be drilled from the surface. The second element can be realised by utilising a sequence of computer generated control charts which have a time axis, a percentage combustibles axis, the upper and lower explosive limits of the current atmosphere and a prediction option which allows the user to look at the potential changes in the atmosphere over a set period of time. These control charts would be part of the mines on-going crisis management system rather than a tool to be used after an explosion had occurred.

An automated method, which is believed to be the fastest in the world and which can be used by mineralogically-untrained technical assistants, has been developed for the rapid location of native gold particles and other gold minerals down to 1 pm in size in ores, concentrates, and tailings using a scanning electron microscope. Searching of a 25 mm diameter polished block in 1 pm steps usually requires 3-4 h. Examples of the location of native gold and gold tellurides in drill core sections, in crushed ore samples and gravity and flotation concentrates, and in various metallurgical test products are given. The results have application in ore exploration, in guiding metallurgical test programmes, and in assessing metallurgical per- formance in testwork and in operating plants.

Magnetic susceptibility measurements provide rapid, non-destructive testing of drill core, but cannot directly map magnetite and/or hematite content. Combined magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation measurements provide much more diagnostic information and, with sparse calibration constraints, are able to quantify magnetite and hematite concentrations and potentially map differences in grain size and texture. We have developed a travelling three-component vector magnetometer that can be run alongside core to map its external magnetic field. The logger has been designed to operate in core sheds and at remote drill sites. It is used to rapidly scan a length of core, with each core being scanned in different rotations. The magnetic field contributions from any remanent magnetisation rotates with the core and cause differences between successive measurements, while the field contributions from any induced magnetisations with isotropic magnetic susceptibility remain constant. Deconvolution of the magnetic field data with simultaneous three-channel inversions of the multirotation data separates remanent and induced components. Interpretation of this data provides estimates of the intensities of induced and remanent magnetisations, the orientation of the remanent magnetisations and the ratios of the induced and remanent magnetisation strengths. We expect these magnetisation parameters to correlate with stratigraphy through a banded-iron formation. Furthermore, we anticipate that we will be able to use this information to map zones of oxidation and other changes along the core. This novel instrument is one component of an integrated CSIRO program to provide new capabilities for iron ore exploration and development based on studies of magnetic fields and magnetisations at scales ranging from centimetres for these core investigations to tens of kilometres for formation studies.CITATION:Foss, C A, Leslie, K and Arnold, C, 2015. The increasing use of Ditch Witch trenching to define gold ore bound- aries in supergeme enriched near surface open cut mines has led to the consideration of using this technique for other sampling procedures. The use of Ditch Witch trenching for exploration has not been widely used and it is anticipated that the technique described will help stimulate more extensive use and new sampling techniques.

"Our understanding of mineral resources relies on three basic steps: data capture data interpretation model construction. Until recently, all three of these steps required significant time and manual effort to produce a single resource model for mine planning, typically taking more than a year to progress from drilling to the final block model. Over the past several years, BHP Billiton has been developing innovative workflows in rapid resource modelling projects to significantly reduce these time constraints and make the process more productive by replacing manual activities with automated ones. Rapid resource modelling is the process of combining recently developed off-the-shelf technology with internal technology developments to fundamentally change the way we collect, interpret, model and evaluate geoscience data. Initiatives include automated systems and standardised workflows to make it safer, faster and cheaper to continuously update multidiscipline resource models. Specifically, rapid resource modelling workflows combine: real-time analysis of drill holes and drill samples with downhole tools and hyperspectral scanning systemsautomated interpretation of drill hole intervals based on pattern-recognition algorithmscontinuous modelling workflows using implicit modelling software.
