The range of environments which control the level of ground support required vary greatly in terms of rock type, rock structure and the mining method used. At the operating mines visited during this review the level of ground support was such that incidence of rock-fall- related accidents were rare. It was also found that methods existed to support most of the conditions encountered. The main problem areas were weak rock, major geological structures, areas of heavy jointing, high development density and areas affected by high mining-induced stresses and blasting. With stope support the level of success was much lower than that achieved in development; the larger spans and more rapid changes in geometry of open stopes compared with cut and fill stoping (where cables were originally used) led to significant problems. Before a useable design method for cable support of stope walls and pillars can be obtained the precise failure mode of the walls and pillars, and the interaction of the support and the rock mass must be investigated.

"Considerable metal values are often locked in stockpiles (ore, concentrates, heap leach pads, slags, reverts, etc.) and process equipment (bins, holding tanks, thickeners, etc.). This is more than enough to justify accurate accounting of such in-process metal inventories from both financial accounting and operational perspective. However, accurately determining the metal inventory of an in-process unit is often a challenge in industrial practice. Audits have shown that available indirect or direct measurements often carry large inaccuracies. Sooner or later, ignoring these measurement errors lead to unexpected incoherencies in reported metal balances. In such situations, coherent metal balances are then achieved through subjective and sometimes significant adjustments of in-process inventory levels. While such metal accounting methods applied by mineral processing engineers used to be rarely challenged, they are now being increasingly scrutinised by various stakeholders. Hence, metal accounting procedures that mitigate subjectivity in adjustments while still coping with the unavoidable uncertainty are more relevant than ever.This paper reviews three different metal accounting methods for reporting in-process metal inventory values. Their individual application strongly depends on the available measurements i.e. The indirect method where the metal inventory of a given process unit is determined by subtracting the cumulative reclaim from the cumulative feed carries important flaws. The direct method also comes with challenging accuracy issues so that emptying a process unit is often the best available inventory measurement. This reality is recognised for by further analysing a previously proposed operating mode where two interchangeable process units are alternately used. The third investigated method is the redundant method which combines indirect and direct methods for a given process unit. There are a number of current theories in relation to methane migration and emission into workings following underground coal mining activity and some controversies do exist. Mining causes changes in the stress regimes in surrounding strata and results in fracturing. Permeability increases and methane flows into workings under a pressure gradient. The effects of stress on permeability depend on the physical properties of the coal and surrounding strata. Methane emission also depends on the original methane content and the proportion which will be liberated. There are several methods for determining in situ methane content and desorption characteristics of coal samples and several methane prediction methods but clearly more research is necessary to achieve an adequate predictive model.

The mobility of radionuclides released into aquatic, terrestrial and subsurface environments by mining, industrial processes is an area that deserves significant scientific attention. The presence of microorganisms in these environments can influence the transport of radionuclides. Free-living microorganisms constitute mobile suspended particles that may have a radionuclide sorbing capacity higher than that of the environment. Radionuclide transport will then proceed faster with than without microorganisms. In contrast, if the majority of the microorganisms are growing in biofilms on surfaces, transport of radionuclides may be reduced. Microorganisms can directly sorb radionuclides either within the cell structure or on the cell wall. Radionuclides could also be sorbed by minerals precipitated by microorganisms. Microorganisms produce complexing agents that can influence radionuclide mobility. The involvement of microorganisms in biogeochemical processes is related to their ability to include various chemical elements and their combinations into biochemical redox reactions. Microorganisms can alter the extent of radionuclide oxidation that results in their deposition as a result of the formation of insoluble forms. Some studies have shown the bioremediative potential of stimulating reducing bacteria to use some of the soluble radionuclides as electron acceptors and thus precipitate them out of solution. The microbial involvement in providing a barrier for radioactive element migration (uranium, technetium) and the formation of ores (eg uranium) has been justified. The mediated impact of microbial activity on radionuclide migration occurs through its effect on the ambient geochemistry by geochemical speciation changes, pH changes and changes to the ambient redox potential. As the mobility of many radionuclides depends on the pH and redox potential of the environment, these microbially mediated geochemical changes can influence radionuclide migration through changes to both the dominant radionuclide species and mineral phases.

Mineral exploration conducted over a wide area of the State during the period 1960 to 1973 has resulted in the discovery of a number of significant deposits. Base metals, particularly copper, have been of prime interest while, more recently, the search for uranium and coal have assumed import- ance. Expenditure of $27.6 million by companies during the period under re- view has located 580,000 tonnes of cop- per, 370,000 tonnes of zinc, 350,000 tonnes of lead, 24 million Kg of uran- ium oxide and 2,500 million tonnes of coal. A variety of other metals and non metallic and industrial minerals have been investigated in a diversity of geological environments.

During the past eight years a vigorous drilling campaign resulted in large increases in the reserves of both copper and silver-lead-zinc ores.As a result the Company initiated an increased production programme.Some major capital works have been completed, others are in progress and more are needed to achieve the proposed daily throughput of 14,400 tons. The increased ore potential justified a copper refinery which has been constructed at Townsville. The increased production rate achieved to date, combined with improved techniques and greater mechanization, is assisting the Company to combat the general inflationary trends caused by increased costs for labour and materials.INTRODUCTION"Today we are armed with better weapons in our fight for lowered costs and greater efficiency, but we must not flag in our efforts to improve." Such was the resolution expressed by Mr. K. B. Gross, then General Manager of the Company, in his review lecture delivered to the First Ordinary Meeting of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy at Mount Isa on 18th August, 1952. This present review of the period 1952 to 1960 records our efforts to fulfil this resolution. At the th:ne of Mr. Gross's statement,copper production was commencing in earnest. Although the importance of Mount Isa's copper orebodies was well recognized, the major discoveries which led to Mount Isa's emergence as Australia's premier copper mining and smelting operation were not known. I take it the character of addresses to conventions, should, following precedent, avoid details, and treat subjects rather from a philosophical point of view so far as they will permit.In the subject about to be treated on, an endeavour will be made to find here we stand as regards the past, in order that we may the better, hope to look correctly in the direction to be followed.It may be assumed that the main object of the Institute is to forward mining interests and the ways in which engineers can aid those interests are many. If all of us were to try to follow many of those interests we should become like" jacks of all trades and masters of none". Mining engineering is consequently subdivided, all are necessary to the common end, and it is on one of those divisions I have undertaken to address you. The subject or steam pumping is a large one, and I regret, not having received such longer notice as would have enabled me to do better justice to the subject, and more respectful regard for yourselves. I must, however, under the circumstances, crave your generous consideration, and hope the topics mentioned may furnish material for discussion and future papers of far more value than this one, Ind.eed, the subject is so illtimately and historically associated with mining that if treated on its merits would be highly interesting or could be made so in more capable hands.

A short overview of the research program of SveBeFo, Swedish Rock Engineering Research, which was founded in 1993 is first given. Then four recent and ongoing projects in rock blasting and explosives engineering are presented in greater detail: 1. Burn Equations for Commercial Explosives. 2. Blast Damage in Contour Blasting. 3. The Role of Gas Pressure in Pit Wall Damage. 4. Fragmentation of Aggregate Rock. The goal of the bum equation project is to be able to control the energy release from explosive charges to the desired part of the expansion curve of the reaction products under various rock conditions. SveBeFo's work has reached the stage where a burn equation for a lab emulsion has been established which can model the influence of charge diameter on the VOD and detonation front curvature in a cylindrical charge quite well. This work now continues with other emulsion recipes. In the blast damage project the goal is to develop techniques and recommendations on how to minimise the blast damage in construction blasting. The project has gained extensive practical knowledge from the blasting of more than 200 holes in a granite quarry under controlled conditions. The cracks in the rock surrounding the contour holes have been cut open and measured. The influence of factors like charge concentration, decoupling ratio, hole and charge size, VOD and time delay in initiation have been investigated. A simultaneous initiation of a group of contour holes with EDD detonators is quite superior to single hole blasts, even when they are timed as closely as 1 ms.

Gas problems, largely instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas, arose in the early days of coal mining in Australia, leading to attempts at predrainage often including destressing. With deeper mining and new gassy areas being mined, gas problems have increased. This has led to more research, such as into coal-gas relationships, and more practical trials into seam gas drainage in both the Sydney and Bowen basins. Predrainage techniques have been devised to suit the special Australian geological conditions and to take into account the erratic occurrence of CO, (nearly 100 per cent in some cases) in the seam gas. Better mining methods and other improvements are continuing. The introduction of post-drainage has been simplified by the adaptation of long established overseas techniques and equipment.Utilisation of seam gases in Australia is complicated by the presence of CO, but even with pure CH. little has been done.Seam gas drainage has some disadvantages such as the need for, and the dangers of, complex and rigorously controlled plant. Also drained coal becomes harder and dustier.

Shear strength testing of rock discontinuity surfaces has been undertaken at a considerable number of open pit gold mining operations in Western Australia, as part of geotechnical studies of pit wall stability. These mining operations are located in geological settings that are typified by highly weathered and/or chemically altered rocks that contain significant structural fabric in which accurate and representative measurement of shear strength is essential.Little of the published rock discontinuity shear test work and back-analysis of failures has been conducted on weathered discontinuity surfaces, at low normal stress levels which are comparable to Western Australian conditions. Available shear strength data are reviewed and the following aspects of shear strength testing are considered:ò the need for shear strength test work and the amount of testing required;ò review of laboratory testing methods and the quality of the results; ò presentation of the test results;ò discussion of the shear strength failure criteria; ò interpretation of the test results;ò summary of test results for a variety of rock types, degree of weathering and discontinuity surface conditions;ò a review of laboratory and field shear strength data to illustrate the amount of variability that can occur; andò a monitoring strategy is proposed to manage the uncertainty associated with discontinuity shear strength.

Some recent and current research and development projects relating to strip type open cut coal mining are reviewed. The projects include a dragline-hopper-truck mining system, an overburden slusher system, improvement of dragline operations, continuous excavation and conveying of overburden materials, and a steep angle coal conveying system. Most of these projects offer prospects for reducing costs in deep strip mining operations, but only the overburden slusher project has the potential for large cost reductions. A project on highwall mining of coal has demonstrated that this coal mining system is viable and capable of achieving high productivity rates. Production highwall mining operations are now starting to become established in Australia.

Embankment dams constructed mainly of sand or non-plastic fine soils are susceptible to liquefaction, particularly in high-rainfall, high-seismicity environments where there is sufficient water to saturate the materials and sufficient energy from an earthquake to cause liquefaction. This paper shows the process adopted to review the stability of an existing cross-valley, centreline-raised cyclone tailings sand embankment dam.The study showed that two-dimensional stability analyses did not sufficiently capture the potential for instability, overestimating the depth of the critical failure surface. Instead, three-dimensional modelling was required to provide a reasonable representation. Post-liquefaction stability analyses carried out using the three-dimensional model indicated an adequate factor of safety (FoS). The FoS under seismic conditions was still considered to be a concern based on pseudostatic analyses (but noting the limitations of the analysis method).Earthquake-induced settlements were estimated using an empirical approach based on case history records (Swaisgood, 2003). The post-earthquake event settlement was estimated to be in the order of 600 mm, which is considered to be acceptable for the embankment, taking account of the proposed long-term freeboard of more than 8 m under operating conditions and 2 m under the probable maximum flood condition.CITATION:Chapman, P J, Wrench, B P and Gowan, M J, 2015. Underground mining with the cut and fill method has been declining during the past decade or so, being replaced mostly by sublevel open stoping methods. During 1983 the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Ltd. (AMIRA) commissioned a review of the method, with the aim of compiling the state-of-the-art, indicating future trends and recommending topics for research that would be needed to support this future mining. Mines using the cut and fill method in Australia and three other countries were visited to compile current practices and expected developments.Cut and fill is mostly used where geological and ground conditions are unsuitable for open or caving methods. These range from narrow, irregular orebodies to wide, massive orebodies where pillars are retained in ore. There is significant potential for improvement and further development of the method. It may then be used in a broader range of conditions and for orebodies that may not otherwise be viable to mine.

A general description of the geology of the Southern Coalfield is given. The relationship between the Illawarra Coal Measures, the overlying Triassic and the underlying Upper Marine Series, of Permian age as are the Coal Measures, is briefly explained and thestratigraphy of each is described. The eight coal seams are then treated in slightly more detail as to their thickness, quality, areas of distribution and best occurrences.In the last few years each of the authors has been concerned with one phase or other of the stTucture of the field in detail or in mining operations with the result that it is now possible to name a number of monoclines, anticlines, domes and synclines defined in detail. A minor quantitative study has been made of faults and dykes with regard to form, direction intensity and inter-relationship. It seems probable that with the further collection of data a more detailed study in these matters will be of considerable value to the economy of mining in the Southern Coalfield.

The search for an efficient and economic machine to excavate hard rock continues. Development of the Robbins Mobile Miner commenced in 1983 with the formation of a joint venture between Mount Isa Mines Limited and The Robbins Company. Construction of the machine ensued and preliminary trials to verify the cutting action were undertaken in the USA prior to transportation to and assembly at Mount I-sa where mining commenced in September 1984. Initially, the machine was used to develop the S60 Decline which serves as a combined access and conveyor drive for the Southern 1100 Orebody Ore Handling System.

There are many factors influencing the way in which a mining company disposes of tailings. Some of the more important factors include physical and chemical properties of tailings, cost, availability of dam wall construction materials, type of mining operation, topography and environmental constraints. As a result, the mining industry has seen a diverse and innovative range of disposal methods developed to satisfy the many conditions imposed at tailings disposal sites. This paper discusses a range of tailings disposal methods currently practiced in the mining industries in North America. These methods include various inpit disposal techniques, upstream, downstream and centreline dam construction and zoned earthfill or rockfill embankment construction. The thickened tailings disposal method and the disposal of fine clays are discussed. The importance of improving the depositional properties of tailings to enhance storage capacity, water reclaim, dam wall stability and final reclamation is stressed. It is important that mining companies are made aware of the full range of disposal methods and dam construction techniques available today. Such an awareness will help improve the planning, design and construction of safer and more efficient tailings disposal facilities in the future.

Variograms can be powerful tools for the analysis and control of process streams and their sampling. Their uses and proper utilisation have been described somewhat unclearly to date, and their limitations and precautions of use are too rarely mentioned. The general meaning and properties of the variogram tool and its use in geostatistics are therefore reviewed in details to derive a critical view of its proper use for process control: what to expect from it and what it cannot deliver and which uses are illusory or potentially misleading. Occupational exposure limits for diesel particular matter (DPM) are progressively being adopted in a number of countries. Many of these follow the lead of the US Mine Safety and Health Administration initiated in 2008. In line with adoption of best practice it is accepted that all exposures should be reduced to as low as reasonably achievable. The management of diesel emissions and occupational exposures to those emissions requires an integrated strategy incorporating efforts from all key departments on a mine, including management, production, maintenance, supply and occupational health and safety.Australian coalmine longwall moves rely on the use of high-powered diesel equipment such as chariots and other machines that produce exhaust pollutants of gases and DPM. To reduce mine personnel’s exposure levels to DPM a hierarchy of controls can be followed. Minimising the use of diesel equipment, better operator positioning in relation to exposure source, using efficient engineering methods and adopting better ventilation to reduce concentrations through dilution are some of the controls that can eliminate exposures. Approaches generally adopted in Australian longwall mines currently rely on a combination of strategies such as optimisation of ventilation, use of diesel particulate filters and use of diesel tag boards that minimise the number of vehicles through recording entry and exit into working panels.A study has been undertaken into the mine ventilation systems currently in use during longwall moves within Australian modern longwall extraction mines. This paper reviews current longwall section ventilation systems and discusses evolving changes being adopted to address the more complex problems in dealing with section DPM during phases of the operational moves. The effects of DPM on crew members as well as the diesel equipment operators within a longwall section are examined.
