This paper presents the design and construction approach adopted for the widening and stabilisation of the existing decline tunnel forming part of the Scenic Railway Upgrade project at Katoomba in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales (NSW), Australia. The overall upgrade project included new trains and track, rebuilding of the top and bottom station and installation of a new winch and control system. All the works were undertaken over an eight-month period between August 2012 and April 2013 as part of a $30 M upgrade of the railway.The railway is the steepest cable-driven line in the world at a maximum of 52° extending over 350 m and descending from the escarpment into the Jamison Valley. The track was built in the 1880s for coal haulage and is recognised as a remarkable engineering achievement for its time. The tunnel section extends for about 120 m at the start of the decline and is about 3.5 m wide and 3.5 m high. The tunnel was excavated principally within medium to high strength Banks Wall sandstone and given that the widening only involved about 200 mm of trimming of the crown and sidewall this aspect of the work was not a critical support issue, except at the upslope portal. The tunnel crown however is entirely intersected by a major near vertical shear zone which presented significant challenges for the tunnel stabilisation works.Three-dimensional laser survey scanning was used for definition of the tunnel clearance envelope for the widening, and also to subdivide the tunnel into various geotechnical sections to assist in support design. Specifically oriented rock bolts extending beyond the shear zone into stable rock were used together with mesh, shotcrete and extensive strip drains and flushing points for drainage of the shear zone.Unique aspects of this project were included into the specifications and work methods. This included construction of a mobile working platform for tunnel works, the use of dry shotcrete application, difficult access for rock bolting and limiting vibration during the tunnel trimming works due to the risks associated with crown instability. The works also took into consideration particular safety constraints/work exclusion areas to address the risk of detachment of rock which could mobilise downslope to the track area below. The producers of mineral sands on the East Coast of Australia might be regarded as having a simple task of selling Rutile and Zircon. Such is not the case. Differing quality and grain size requirements plus the dramatic increase in the percentage of mineral sold in a processed form have meant a large increase in the number of different end products handled. The resulting sales control problems are compounded by the need to be able to deliver against a large number of separate contracts which may relate to spot or long term sales in small quantities or in bulk shipments. Methods of helping management control this situation have been devised and incorporated into a suite of computer programs. Experience with the approach has been very satisfactory. The effect of changes to shipping schedules, commitment to new or changed orders, or proposed changes to production can be evaluated as and when necessary with little bother. Costain Resources Limited operates two open cut coal mines in the Hunter Valley coalfields of New South Wales, Ravensworth Mine and Warkworth Mine. The location of the Ravensworth operation is shown in Figure 1. In the case of the Ravensworth Mine, Costain Australia is essentially a contract miner and is contracted to supply coal to Pacific Power (previously The Electricity Commission of New South Wales), on contracts won through a tender system. Due to the existing infrastructure and the lease area that associated with the contract, the mining strips at Ravensworth South have a maximum strike length of 1500 metres. This paper deals with the methods of scheduling used to overcome the challenge of mining the short strike length, multi-seam deposit at Ravensworth South.

Scheelite mineralisation east of the main divide in' the Southern Alps of New Zealand was originally identified by Royden Thompson who is now a geologist with the NZ Geological Survey. This mineralisation was brought to the attention of CRA in 1978. Reconnaissance surveys were carried out in 1979 to delineate the extent of the mineralisation. This was undertaken using ultraviolet light examination of the sediments within the major drainages in the Southern Alps. This defined tentative zones of prospective mineralisation. As a result of this, preliminary reconnaissance, exploration licences were applied for -those areas in which indications of scheelite mineralisation were strongest. A total of 1737 km2 of ground was applied for within four exploration licences. These covered the main Southern Alps mountain chain between the Haast/Wanaka highway and the Mt Cook National Park.

Although the mining of metals was well established by the time of the Roman Empire mining skills did not really advance greatly for many centuries. Miners did not have the scientific knowledge to distinguish minerals, to process them, and to obtain the best recovery. Each mine essentially developed its own methods in isolation, most of them dangerous. However, with the beginning of the industrial revolution in the early 18th century there was a rapid increase in mining activity in Central and Western Europe and an accompanying need to educate professionals in the developing fields of science and technology. There was also a need for specialised schools (for example, Schools of Mines) to accomplish this since the universities of the time, formed as early as the first half of the 12th century, were cloistered institutions, focused on the study of classics, theology and law. The earliest attempts at organised technical education were made in 1702 with the establishment of a School of Mines in Frieberg, Germany (Table 1) to service rich copper mines, and in 1747 with the establishment of a School of Mines in Paris. By this time, the industrial revolution was well under way and other Schools rapidly followed, at Clausthal in the Ruhr region of Germany in 1775; in 1777 at Almanden to service the mercury mines of Spain (later transferred to Madrid); in 1780 at St Petersburg, Russia and at Falun, Sweden in 1819. The academic staff for these new institutions were often trained in the original School at Frieberg.

Resource estimates are the corner stone of technical and investment decision-making. Prior to mining, resource estimation uncertainty has the greatest potential to lead to poor investment decisions, despite a significant component of resource estimation uncertainty being unknowable at this critical stage in the mining cycle. This presents a conundrum to the resource geologist in terms of risk evaluation and resource classification. Ahead of mining, there is normally considerable focus on drill hole spacing analysis to determine the ‘optimal’ drill hole spacing, taking grade and geological continuity into account; cost-benefit analyses balance improved resource definition against cost; the law of diminishing returns and the exponential cost increases acting together as spacing is reduced. Typically, a lower limit to the drill hole spacing is identified. After completing the resource drilling to an agreed spacing, resource estimation is then undertaken. At this point it is common to attempt to bracket the resource estimation uncertainty. In many cases conditional simulation is used, based on a modelled, but largely assumed, variogram model. It is also assumed that the histogram of the available drill hole sample data is representative of the in-ground mineralisation. The purpose of this paper is not to diminish the importance of drill hole spacing and simulation studies, but rather to illuminate an important aspect of estimation uncertainty that, although previously recognised, is typically overlooked – the question of how representative the available data set is in characterising the true (but unknown) distribution of mineralisation. To do this, we lift the lid on one of OceanaGold’s former operations, the mined-out Globe Progress Mine, by resurrecting a high quality, close-spaced, reverse circulation (RC) grade control data set. The Globe Progress Mine is within the West Coast Region of New Zealand, it was closed and transitioned to rehabilitation in 2016 and is now known as the Reefton Restoration Project. The exhaustive Globe Progress grade control data was used to repeatedly ‘redrill’ the deposit by extracting 35 m × 35 m spaced subsets from the original 5 m × 5 m spaced grade control data. Utilising closely spaced grade control data removed the need for assumptions regarding short range continuity, which are necessary with forward-looking analyses that are based upon broader spaced resource drilling. The extraction process used a nearest neighbourhood algorithm, repeatedly moving the origin in 5 mE, or 5 mN increments. Individual resource estimates were then completed for each of the extracted drill hole data sets (49 in total) as well as a grade control estimate based upon the exhaustive data set. Whilst the data unpinning each of the 49 estimates changed, the geological assumptions, variography, and modelling parameters remained constant. This approach was taken to isolate the impact of changing the input data. The 49 estimates were then compared against each other and the grade control estimate. The mean of all 49 sensitivity estimates was close to that of the grade control estimate in terms of contained gold, tonnes and grade. Whilst it is acknowledged that the grade control estimate itself is subject to some degree of estimation uncertainty, the close match between the average of the 49 estimates and the grade control estimate suggests that the resource estimation methodology is reasonable and appropriate. Whilst this comparison is important, the focus of this study is on the component of estimation uncertainty related to the underlying data, and this is reflected in the spread across the estimates. The spread across the 49 global estimates (highest to lowest) for this particular Mineral Resource Estimation Conference 2023 | Perth, Australia | 24–25 May 2023 142 case study was found to be significant (approximately 20 per cent in grade and metal) and that is attributable solely to the underlying data. This exercise quantifies a component of the estimation uncertainty that is inherent to all drill hole data and is distinct from the uncertainties associated with modelling methodology choices, sample and subsample quality and drill hole spacing-related interpolation uncertainty. Importantly, this uncertainty is unknowable prior to mining; we can only directly compare the resource drill hole data against grade control data after mining has taken place. For the case study, approximately 65 per cent of the estimates fell within 5 per cent of the grade control estimate for contained-gold, suggesting that for many projects the histogram of drill hole data is unlikely to differ noticeably from that of the in-ground resource. However, about 15 per cent of the estimates in this study differed by more than 7.5 per cent, suggesting that a not-insignificant proportion of estimates will be materially compromised. Whether or not the available drill hole data is representative comes down to the ‘luck of the draw’ and cannot be known at the time of resource estimation. Given the challenge of attempting to evaluate forward-looking estimation uncertainty, a component of which that can only be quantified retrospectively, what should we do as resource geologists? What are the implications for risk evaluation, resource classification and reconciliation? Furthermore, without rigorous post-mining data checks, resource geologists may conflate suboptimal modelling with the shortcomings of the underlying data. An example of this problem is discussed in the following section.

Engineering education has become a matter of national concern, at last, so I would like to talk about the links between the mining industry, the universities and technological developments. The Australasian mining industry and the mining schools have collaborated closely since the first school was established in 1871 and during those years there were a series of remarkable technological developments. For example:In the late 1880s George AndersoIl Richard developed chloride leaching of gold at Mt Morgan. This made a large difference to the wealth of Mt Morgan Mining Ltd.In the mid 1890s Robert Sticht demonstrated that pyrite smelting was an economically feasible process at Mt Lyell and the wealth which came to Mt Lyell Mining Co from his outstanding work made it one of the great companies in the country.During the first 15 years of this century flotation was developed at Broken Hill and it has proved to be one of the great technological inventions of this century.In the 1920s G K Williams started his outstanding work on lead smelting and refining at Port Pirie, this was work which ultimately re-wrote the text book on lead metallurgy and established Port Pirie as the mecca for lead metallurgists.In the 1920s also Frank Stillwell, later joined by Austin Edwards, established the new science of mineragraphy at the University of Melbourne. They were both great geologists, both were superb scientists and oddly enough both were outstanding athletes.In the 1930s Dr Ian Wark, a man in the front rank of Australian scientists of any period, started his outstanding work on flotation, work which resulted in a text book which remains a leader in its field today.In the 1930s also Arnold Black at Broken Hill South Ltd picked up the work which had been done at Mt Lyell many years previously and eventually wrote the papers on hydraulic fill which demonstrated that he led the world in fill technology. What a remarkable story of achievement it was, it laid the groundwork for the great industry we have today. It was possible because the industry was well supported by outstanding university schools and I would like to talk about some of these.

The theme i wish to develop in this talk is how we might make use of the scientific and technological knowledge we now have ofextraction metallurgy to meet the present-day needs of the production industry.Before doing so, I would like to say a few words in tribute to Dr. G.K. Williams since he was a past master at precisely what I wish to talk about. I knew G.K., as everybody called him, during the time he spent at Avonmouth in the late 40's and in the 50's. Later, when he was ostensibly retired, I had the pleasure several times of lunching with him when I was visiting Melbourne.When G.K. was at Avonmouth, the Imperial Smelting Process was in that capricious adolescent stage in between the pilot plant and the full-scale commercial unit. G.K. was a great collector of process plant data which hung in cascades from the walls of his office and-from his hand-operated desk calculator. What G.K. understood very well were the basic metallurgical and engineering principles of what was going on in the sinter machine, the shaft furnace and all their ancillaries.

A survey is made of changes in the technical status of a number of western world copper extraction and refining operations over the past 20 years. Specific developments in pyro- and hydro-metallurgy and refining practices are identified together with factors in the changing environment of the industry which has influenced their adoption. Nickel extraction and refining is similarly discussed.The replacement of traditional technology by more attractive alternatives has occurred in a considerable number of operations. The develop-ment and status of new continuous smelting processes, advances in hydrometallurgy and refining innovations which emerged during the 1960s and early 1970s is discussed. The varying experience in commercial acceptance of these new technologies is noted.Finally some possible future directions are canvassed for both operators and the research and development institutions.

In his letter of resignation as General Superintendent of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters (BHAS) prior to taking up aconsulting position at imperial Smelting, G.K. Williams wrote that he considered his major contributions at BHAS were:the development of large scale sintering machines;the double tuyere-row blast furnace; continuous lead refining.Despite his well deserved reputation as a scientist, based on his advancement of the metallurgical chemistry underlying lead refining processes, Williams reveals that he considered commercial implementation as the ultimate measure of technological success. Furthermore, he clearly did not differentiate between the scientific and the empirical as a means of achieving that end.

The Rio Tinto (Mount Bruce Mining Pty Ltd) Koodaideri Iron Ore Project is located approximately 110 km north-west of Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. During detailed ecological studies of the project area, a significant maternity roost (containing around 430 individuals) of the Orange Leaf-nosed Bat (OLNB) (Rhinonicteris aurantius) was discovered within the boundaries of the proposed mining area. The OLNB is listed as Vulnerable under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and is listed as a Schedule 1 species under the Western Australian Wildlife Conservation Act 1950.With a good understanding of blast vibration attenuation in the Pilbara’s different geologies and in the absence of other known studies, it was considered that appropriate buffer distances between mining and bat colonies were not scientifically determined. Therefore, to inform the environmental approvals process that was underway, a series of seismic blasts was planned to assess and measure the sensitivity of the OLNB to trial-sized seismic blasting activities to develop a more scientifically based buffer zone for the protection of the OLNB. This was to be achieved by testing ground attenuation of the site and measuring any response from the OLNB to the firing of seismic charges. Rio Tinto sought the independent expertise of ecological consultants to evaluate and participate in the work to quantify the level of sensitivity of the bat colony and to outline the proposal to government authorities.After detailed risk assessment and project mapping, the seismic blasts were implemented, with the aim of firing individual charged and measured vector peak particle velocity (VPPV) at the OLNB roost cave, combined with monitoring OLNB disturbance activity within the roost that was invoked by the blasts. A series of six charges were fired with the VPPV ranging from 0.66 mms-1 to 18.70 mms-1. The OLNB activity was monitored using high frequency microphones, which detect bat calls emitted during flight. Under daytime conditions, the bats would normally be dormant, so the null hypothesis was for no calls to be detected if the bats displayed no disturbance behaviour. This work has improved understanding of mining activities (blasting) on the OLNB species, assisting in establishing mining exclusion zones that are based on scientific data, contributing to a sustainable future for both the environment and the mining industry.CITATION:Martin, D, 2015. How often does one hear that a recent feasibility study was not a success? Alternatively, when scope of the feasibility study was sent out to tender there was a large discrepancy in tendered prices. If the tendered prices were to be compared to the consumer market, for instance the purchase of a car, where the concept is transport in a controlled and safe manner, prices vary by large factors, but then so do the specifications. In the case of a feasibility study, prices should be within a tighter margin as the tenderers are all quoting against the same concept and specification. Why do these discrepancies occur? Price discrepancies will in every likelihood be attributed to two main factors; one, the perceived amount of work and two, the ability of the bidder to carry the risk associated with the feasibility study. It is, therefore, important that the scoping of the feasibility study covers the detailed requirements as clearly as possible stating what level of accuracy is required. The feasibility study is one of the first activities in the life of a project. The study, like the project it is investigating, is subject to the constraints of time, cost and quality. Its primary objectives are to demonstrate the viability of a project within the outlined scope and constraints.

The Pajingo ore bodies consist mainly of auriferous quartz veins hosted by a suite of hydrothermally altered andesitic pyroclastics, volcanics and epiclastic sediments. Scott lode, the main economic deposit in the area, lies in a zone of major structural disruption and contortion. High grade gold and silver mineralisation is selectively mined by open pit methods. Standard grade control techniques and extraction methods were adapted to minimise mining dilution and to maximise metal recovery. Basic blending of grade ranges at the crusher has produced an average 10 gram/tonne gold head grade. The estimation of ore reserves calculated by both standard polygonal and geostatistical methods proved acceptable. Mineable reserves when compared to in pit reserves defined by blast hole drilling, indicate a decrease in tonnes and an increase in the grade resulting in an acceptable comparison of the total ounces of contained gold. The ore reconciliation of mined against milled ounces indicates that both ore reserve and grade control models underestimate the metal content in the orebody. Sampling techniques are being examined in an attempt to reduce this discrepancy.

Screening is a critical part of many mineral processing circuits and keeping the aperture of the screening media within specification is vital to ensure efficient performance of the processing plant. Typical ways of estimating and/or measuring the wear of the screening media vary from very subjective methods (for instance, using the human eye) to manually checking the width of a few of the more severely worn gaps with a measurement device. Subjective methods can be flawed by human error while manual checking can distort the polyurethane or rubber materials that are used in several types of screening media. All of these errors can cause either premature replacement of panels or, even worse, poor screening of the material.Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) and Metso Screening Media Solutions (SMS) have developed an innovative method that measures screen aperture using advanced image processing techniques. Field trials of the device are presented in this paper, which shows the comparison between the different methods of measuring apertures. Case studies demonstrate how the system, when combined with ScreenTrack, MetsoÆs industry leading maintenance system, and screening media, is providing users with the best possible screening solutions.

As partition curves are widely employed to characterize screening efficiency which, by definition, should include a time parameter, it is shown, perhaps for the first time, that time is already included in the partition curves and how. Laboratory and plant results are used to show how screening efficiency depends on feed composition, near-mesh and oversize material and screen motion, and how these factors may combine to give an erroneous result that two identically efficient screens are different and two screens of different efficiency are identical. Reasons are given which show why a renewed interest in screening would benefit not only screen engineers and operators but also those concerned in formulating standard specifications of screen analysis methods.

The screening of iron ores, sinter and coke, and investigations undertaken to improve screening efficiency and cloth life are discussed. The major modifications to coke screening proposed with the construction of No. 7 coke ovens battery are briefly described. The major problem areas were identified as screen cloth blinding and pegging, feed presentation and screen overloading. Blinding and pegging have had a significant effect upon screening efficiency with the screening of sinter, coke breeze and wet iron ores in particular. Pegging can be reduced or eliminated by the correct selection of aperture size and shape, screen excitation and slope, and screening medium. Blinding encountered with wet coke breeze was a particular problem in which no significant progress was made.

This paper is related to the problems of the mathematical modelling of vibrating screening process and to predicting the screening operation results. The authors propose a model of screening based on the interpretation of granular material segregation on a screen surface as an instantaneous process. Results show an agreement with laboratory and pilot plant tests. Derived formulae can be used for screen sizing and screening result estimating.

UNDER a contract relating to the sale of a Broken Hill concentrate, the differentiation between granular and slime concentrate is determined by the proportion of the material which will pass a 200-mesh (I.M.M. standard) screen, and this has led to considerable attention being devoted to the question of laboratory sizing tests with screens of this order.It was found that many of the screens turned out by the makers during the war, and also since its termination, did not conform with the I.M.M. specifications as closely as some supplied in pre-war days. A perfect screen is hardly to be expected, but when the above contract was framed the parties anticipated that, by special care being taken during manufacture, a screen at least as good as the best pre-war screens would be available. This, however, has not proved to be the case, and the large irregularities in screens recently supplied render them useless for sizing determinations under the contract. The makers were approached through the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London, with the view of obtaining a few screens conforming as closely as possible to the 200-mesh I.M.M. standard, and in response to a request twelve pieces of screen were...

Evidence abounds for sea-level change having occurred throughout geological and recent time. Driven by climatic changes, by cycles of glaciation and deglaciations, and by tectonics the position of sea-level relative to the crust has been going up and down since oceans first formed. Rates of these differential movements have been as high as 10 mm/year during the last major deglaciation as sea-level rose by about 150 m in about 15000 years. Tectonic processes can also produce change in sea-level relative to the crust of several mm/year as in, for example, the uplift of the Huon Peninsula in Papua New Guinea. To understand what is happening to sea-level today and what may be happening in the future it is necessary to understand the geological and climatic processes that have caused sea-level to change in the past and the best laboratory for the study of these processes is the geological and geomorphological record. Evidence for observations of sea-level change throughout Late Pleistocene and Holocene time is plentiful in the Australian region. Temporal variability is characterized by a low-stand, at more than 100 m below the present level, at about 20 000-18 000 years ago followed by a rapid rise and transgression of the continental margin up to about 6000 years ago. After this time sea-levels remained within a few metres of their present value but the patterns of change are not everywhere the same. The depth of the low stand at about 18 000 years ago does not appear to have been the same everywhere. Nor does the time at which sea-level first reached its present value appear to have been everywhere the same. The fluctuations about present sea-level during the past 6000 years appear to have been different in different localities. As yet there has not been a wholly satisfactory quantitative explanation for this spatial variability. How much, if any, is indicative of vertical tectonics? How much is the result of the Earth's response to the changing surface loads as mass is exchanged between ice sheets and the oceans? Can any of it be attributed to past changes in global climate? Or are the observations just wrong?

The Greenhouse Effect, with its potential for global warming, is strongly linked to industrial carbon dioxide emissions. Global carbon mass balances indicate that absorption in sea water is the major natural sink of carbon dioxide. However the surface waters of the oceans are close to chemical equilibrium with the atmosphere with respect to carbon dioxide, while the deep ocean waters are not. Consequently, the transfer of carbon dioxide from the surface limits the rate at which the oceans can absorb carbon dioxide. It is proposed that direct transfer of carbon dioxide from industrial installations to deep ocean waters be evaluated as an interim measure to slow the rate of increase of carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere and hence allow time for the development of sustainable industrial practices. As an aid to thinking on the development of suitable technology, equilibrium calculations are presented which demonstrate that sea water in equilibrium with flue gases will dissolve six times the quantity of carbon dioxide that is dissolved in equilibrium with the ambient atmosphere. Sea water saturated with calcium carbonate and in equilibrium with flue gases will dissolve 20 times the quantity of carbon dioxide that is dissolved in equilibrium with the ambient atmosphere. However the absolute concentrations of dissolved carbon dioxide are still very small.
