In the scope of the project named CAPUME II (EEC BRITE/EURAM contract - project MA2M-CT90,-0042(SMA)) for the development of an integrated mine planning system for underground mines, two of the main tasks were the development of a short-term mining planning procedure (module) and a numerical simulator of the mineral processing plant of Pirites Alentejanas - PA. The short-term mining planning module defines the mining sequences by solving a constrained minimisation problem. The ore grade variability is the objective function subject to the geometrical constraints of the mining method and to the maximum of `internal blending'. The optimisation problem is solved by applying a dynamic programming algorithm. The plant simulator is an essential tool of the planning system allowing the preview of metal grades/recoveries of copper, lead and zinc of concentrates streams, given the corresponding metal assays of the run-of-mine ore, defined by the short-term mine planning module. This way, the management can plan the short-term mining operations (the weekly sequence of exploration blocks and the internal planning) in order to fulfill given required conditions, based on a shipment schedule and on a purchaser's formula. In this paper, after a short description of the short-term mining planning module and of the simulation package named SIMUL, a synthesis of the main model development steps and the results of some simulation runs are presented and discussed.

In order for the Australian underground coal mining industry to achieve the high productivity rates demanded of it without compromising its good safety record, improved geotechnical monitoring systems are required. One of the main problem areas affecting underground coal mining is the deterioration of previously stable roadways.CSIRO Division of Geomechanics has been working on a NERDDC funded project to develop an instrument to monitor coal mine roof deformation. The instrument which has been developed, Roof Alert, is a self contained, battery powered, intrinsically safe device. It can monitor the magnitude and rate of deformation and give multiple, variable visual alarm signals where preset levels ate exceeded.

Observed mineral assemblages in the Mt. Lyell copper deposit can be correlated with phase equilibrium investigations in the systems Cu-Fe-S and Fe-Zn-S. The trend of crystallization (or paragenetic sequence) of the ores is reflected in a progressive increase in the Cu: Fe and metal: sulphur ratios of the assemblages. This trend agrees with the regional zoning of the district. Tentative relationships between the paragenetic sequence, sulphur vapour pressure, and temperature are presented graphically. The absence of a suitable geological thermometer prevents precise elucidation of the range of temperatures and pressures which existed during crystallization.INTRODUCTIONRecent phase equilibrium investigations of metal-sulphur systems at the Geophysical Laboratory, Washington, D.C. provide valuable information on the stability relations of a number of important sulphide minerals. This data, when applied to natural ore deposits, may be expected to clarify two special problems which confront the ore petrologist seeking to interpret observed data in terms of a particular physical and chemical environment of ore deposition. These two problems are the sequence of formation of sulphide minerals (commonly designated the paragenetic sequence) and an elucidation of the range of temperatures and pressures which existed during crystallization. The object of this paper is to make such an interpretation of the copper mineralization of the Mt. A short discussion of the salient aspects of a dispersed flow model in relation to the gas flow in blast furnaces is given. The use of the theory in assessing vessel performance is mentioned. Tracer results of a blast furnace (688 m3) from three furnace levels and different radial positions are analysed and results presented as D/ud values. The significance of the shapes of experimental tracer curves are included and comparison is made with results obtained on other furnaces.

The description, characteristics, advantages and application of a new bulk explosive for medium to large diameter dry blasthole conditions is described. A brief outline of the delivery system for the product is also included. This explosive has been designed to provide an alternative to ANFO, currently the most common bulk dry hole product available to the mining and quarrying industry. The selection of the optimum explosive for any blasting operation is of prime importance. It is a major factor contributing to the production of the desired results in terms of muckpile fragmentation, shape and diggability. The optimum explosive can be defined as the most cost-effective in producing satisfactory breakage and displacement of the material. ANFO satisfies this prerequisite for a significant proportion of dry hole applications. This unique, low density and low velocity of detonation explosive has been developed to provide the industry with a cost competitive alternative to ANFO. Typical loading or average inhole densities nominally range between 0.40 g/cc to 0.70 g/cc, depending on the application. Characteristics of this explosive allow for specific and common applications in open cut coal and metalliferous operations. These include ore/waste control operations, prestripping and presplitting applications, sites confronting cap rock problems, and large hole diameter quarries.

A discrete fracture network (DFN) approach involves numerical modelling that explicitly represents how defects may be spatially distributed through a rock mass. A DFN is a 3D realisation of the ‘smaller scale’, non-deterministic defects; it is not an attempt to model larger, deterministic structures that should be identified as part of an engineering geology model. The approach utilises structural data in stochastic analyses to give a range of possible models that provides a tool for visualisation and analysis of a rock mass and indicates the potential large-scale slope or tunnel performance and stability.Stochastic fracture modelling for rock mass characterisation has significantly advanced over the past 25 years. With recent improvements to field data collection and computational power, it has become recognised internationally as a valuable tool for modelling some geomechanical problems encountered when designing excavations in fractured rock masses.This paper provides an introduction to the DFN approach, particularly the necessary input parameters and derivation of these from typical structural data sources, such as boreholes or scan line mapping. Of particular importance for engineering applications is validation of the simulated fracture network and techniques for doing so are discussed here.CITATION:Weir, F M and Fowler, M, 2014. The Mineral Resources Act 1989 was assented to on 25th October, 1989 after more than two years of consultation and negotiation between Government, the mining industry and other affected parties particularly the major rural organisations.The legislation proposes major conceptual changes in a number of areas and adopts a totally new approach to the definition of land and the mechanisms available to the mining industry for accessing such land.Unfortunately the passage of the legislation through Parliament coincided with the lead-up to the State election. Ultimately it became an election issue generating much adverse comment in the media particularly from rural and landholder groups. It was obvious that much of this anti-mining propaganda resulted from a lack of understanding of the legislation and the benefits that flow to the majority of landholders as well as the mining industry.It is essential that the contents of the Mineral Resources Act be thoroughly understood by all parties. Only then will all the State's resources be able to be developed in a multiple land use environment.This paper outlines the philosophy behind the new Act and the more important provisions contained therein.

The brown coal resources of the Latrobe Valley, which include over thirty thousand million tons of coal suitable for open cutting, provide the main source of fuel for the power generation for the State of Victoria. They also provide the basis for the development of a supply of cheap hard fuel for industrial and domestic use, and for the development of the Lurgi process for manufacture of town gas for most of the State. The production of hard char for metallurgical processes and liquid hydro carbons will each, no doubt, play its part in the industrial growth that will be based on these resources.The State Electricity Commission of Victoria, which has been allocated the task of developing these deposits since the early 1920's, is faced with problems of economic selection of deposits for development, and excavation and transport of huge tonnages of coal and overburden-in this year, 19'59, about 12,000',000 tons of brown coal will be won, and over 7,000,000' cu. yd. of overburden will be removed in the four open cuts operated by the Commission; by 1967, eight years from now, the demand will have doubled.This paper deals with the nature and importance of various factors effecting the planning of the development of these resources. It is in essence an introduction to the papers by C. S. Gloe, H. C. G. Rodgers and J. M. Alexander, also being -presented at the Institute conference in Victoria in August, 1959.INTRODUCTIONIt is the intention in this paper to define the factors that come under consideration in the planning and development of the brown coal fields in the Latrobe Valley, whose exploitation by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria was initiated almost 40 years ago. It is proposed to enumerate, and in sorile cases evaluate, the physical and economic criteria that play their part in determining planning for the future.

A methodology for the inversion of a scaled charge weight superposition model to predict peak particle velocity (PPV) has been examined. The inversion involves two steps: first simulated annealing is used to get an initial estimate of the model parameters; and second, these parameters are used as input to a quasi-Newton non-linear optimisation method, used to refine the value of the parameters. The methodology recovers the three required parameters (two charge weight scaling parameters and a time window width) and does this directly from a single production blast for a given point of interest. It has been tested on a synthetic example and recovered the input model parameters successfully in the presence of introduced noise with a coefficient of variation ranging up to ten per cent. Another test used the vibration measurements of three tunnel blasts monitored during the construction of the Citybanan tunnel in Stockholm. In this case, the three model parameters are found from one blast and for a given point of interest, and the PPV at the same point of interest is predicted for the second and third blast fired in the same vicinity as the first blast. The three blasts used different firing sequences. The predicted PPV limits use a confidence interval determined from the scatter in the peak levels obtained from the single calibration blast. The methodology was able to predict an upper bound for the PPV in 21 of the 26 tunnel blast vibrations studied. These predictions improve on a previous study involving the same model but which did not use the inversion process above. Given this reasonable success, further testing of the method on other data sets and alternative forward prediction models is recommended.CITATION:Lawlor-O’Neill, M L and Spathis, A T, 2015. Platinum Group Metal (PGM) bearing ores from the Upper Group 2 (UG2) reef often contain significant concentrations of chromite which can potentially be upgraded to produce a saleable product. A common approach is to implement gravity separation on the PGM flotation circuit tailings. However, where the particle size range of interest is broad and the lower size limit ultra-fine, the challenge is how to maximise the recovery at a saleable product grade without compromising throughput. This study was concerned with the performance of a REFLUX™ Classifier for beneficiation of a PGM bearing chromite ore and the benefits of size classification. The sample had a nominal top size of 0.5 mm and was processed over the complete size range and in two discrete size classes following classification at 106 µm. The primary goal was to produce a concentrate exceeding 40 wt. per cent Cr2O3, ideally approaching 42 wt. per cent Cr2O3, with minimal PGM losses above 106 µm. A major challenge was to process at the required solids throughput in a single stage with the feed pulp density constrained to a nominal upper limit of 30 wt. per cent solids. It was found that varying the controller density set point of the REFLUX™ Classifier produced strong control of the product grade. Products as high as 41.1 wt. per cent Cr2O3 were produced at 78.6 per cent recovery for the +106 µm material, while in the −106 µm portion the product grade was as high as 41.4 wt. per cent Cr2O3 at 83.2 per cent recovery. Processing the feed in discrete size classes enabled the volumetric feed and fluidisation rates to be optimised for a given application; hence, superior performance was achieved at the finer sizes. This work has demonstrated the value in considering feed preparation as well as technology selection in developing a robust process solution.

The sequence of development and back analysis of the failure of a spoil pile in the 1B pit of the Moura Mine are given. The mode of failure was a two-wedge mechanism with a basal slip plane passing through a clay band about 2 m below the pit floor. Remedial actions for improving spoil pile stability are discussed.

At Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold MineÆs (KCGMÆs) Fimiston Operations, located on the periphery of Kalgoorlie Boulder in Western Australia, roughly 7.5 million tonnes of rock are broken each month for the extraction of gold. With the close proximity of neighbours to the mining operations in the Chaffers Cut Back, special blasting techniques and tools were employed by KCGM to manage the blast induced vibrations and noise in this area. The i-konTM initiation system coupled with OricaÆs complementary modelling and analysis tools offered the complete blast management package. With these tools KCGM management and Orica Mining Services commenced an investigation into the benefits of electronic initiation. Prior to the commencement of electronic blasting, initial modelling was conducted to examine the vibration time waveforms and their frequency content, as these were expected to have an impact on vibration interaction with structures such as large buildings and urban dwellings. This work looked at results measured for a previous conventionally (pyrotechnic) initiated blast in the area and compared it to the results obtained when the blast was modelled with electronic initiation and faster timings. The predicted peak particle velocity (PPV) and structural vibration factor (SVF) were calculated. From the results it was concluded that the investigation into using i-konTM electronic initiation system and SHOTPlus«-i blast design software had some real potential to improve blast vibration management on the cut back. The use of the electronic initiation system and complementary software allows intricate timing designs to be accurately placed into blasts. The system has a number of working modes that allow either the precise design timings to be logged automatically into each detonator or to be manually logged where a variation from the design exists. Where such variations from the design occur, the electronic system permits the actual timings used to be uploaded back into the design file. This allows both design and real actual timings to be stored for future analysis or reference.

This work was commenced at a time when information on the manufacture of cemented tungsten carbide was urgently needed in Australia. Much information of a general type has been published, but many of the details of the processes used are still undisclosed. The aim of this research was to determine a satisfactory way in which cemented tungsten carbide could, be made, and to investigate the problems which are associated with the process. As the work proceeded, its ramifications grew continually, and it was necessary to limit the possible lines of investigation. After much experimental work, a 9% cobalt-tungsten carbide alloy was developed which had satisfactory properties when used as a cutting tip. The effect of certain variables on the properties of this particular alloy was investigated.The tungsten carbide was prepared in stages from King Island scheelite concentrates under strict laboratory control, whilst the cobalt (1) used was made from cobalt oxide prepared from crude cobalt oxide obtained from Eisdon.In order to clarify the detailed experimental work, a brief summary of the method used for the preparation of cemented tungsten carbide follows.Tungsten carbide and cobalt are prepared in a very finely powdered state, and are then thor,oughly mixed by a ball milling operation. The resultant mixture is pressed in a suitably shaped die into small compacts which are subsequently '''presintered,'' i.e., heated' in hydrogen between 800°C. and 1000°C. The final sintering is carried out in hydrogen between 1,400°C.and 1,600°C. for about half an hour. These "alloys" may contain from 3 to 13% cobalt, depending on the particular properties required of them.PREPARATION OF MATERIALSThe tungsten oxide prepared as described by Smithells (2) was extremely finely divided, and after a few hours' grinding in a ball mill, the powder consisted of material below 10 microns iJ;l size. The oxide was reduced to tungsten metal with hydrogen in a tube furnace. Under platform exhaust (UPE) systems are often designed into metro stations as a means of removing heat generated by trains as they come to a halt in the platform. These systems are designed to extract heat from the brakes and brake resistors directly at the source in order to capture as much heat as possible before it can enter the public areas of the station, or contribute to the temperature build-up in the tunnels. Due to space requirements for the associated duct and air handling units, the UPE plays a significant role in the geometric design of the platform and station as a whole.In recent years questions have arisen as to the effectiveness of UPE systems. However, very little data is available for designers to use when making important decisions on the station designs for new metro systems. This is important as significant savings could be achieved by omitting or re-designing these systems for new build stations; not only due to the capital costs of space provision for the duct itself but also due to the associated operation and maintenance cost of the UPE system.This paper will present recent measurements of the UPE system of the Copenhagen metro together with one-dimensional (1D) simulations, looking at typical dispersion of heat into the station plenum box and air exchange through draught relief shafts as the train enters the station in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the UPE system. The aim of this paper is to disseminate the results of measurements and analysis to increase awareness of the issue and to provide discussion relevant to designers in their evaluation of heat removal systems in new build station designs.

Common brattice cloths in use in Australian coal mines are compared by permeability measurements. The respective advantages of twill weave and tarpauling* weave cloths are listed, and the improvements to be obtained in the ventilation of a mine by using tarpauling cloths instead of the commonly used twill cloths are stressed. Plastic cloths are widely used overseas and are briefly discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe onset of extensive full-scale mechanization in Australian coal mines during the past few years has increased attention given to the ventilation of working places. Many inadequacies of the present system have been brought to light and not the least of these is connected with the use of brattice cloth, both in directing the flow of air around the face and in acting as a temporary sealing mechanism. A well-constructed line of brattice will only provide fair ventilation for a distance of 100 ft. Beyond this point the volume or air reaching the face falls off rapidly.Some of the shortcomings associated' with the use of brattice cloths are:1. Hurried installation, necessitated by a rapid advance, often results in poor workmanship with, consequently, an excessively high leakage rate.2. High places caused by falls of roof are difficult and time-consuming to seal.3. Curtains, in lines of brattice crossing transport routes, are difficult to maintain.4. Pyrrhotite is pyrophoric when in a finely divided form. The problems of disposing of large quantities of finely divided pyrrhotite separated out by metallurgical processing from ore are formidable. In the case of an underground mine, a solution to the problem of disposal is to place the pyrrhotite in the stoped out areas and seal from any air supply. Further, the pyrrhotite could be diluted with tailings which would reduce the possibility of combust- ion. Several enquiries to various centres and authorities have shown that the products of the slow oxidation of pyrrhotite with moisture present can cement an inert matrix into a stable fill similar in physical prop- erties to fill stabilised with Portland cement. Stabilised fill can be used to advan tage with a suitable mining method to provide high recovery. The investigation demonstrated that air and 15% w/w water must be present for the fill to harden and that the sizing of the particles is a critical factor in drainage of a hydraul- ically placed fill and subsequent even harden- ing of the fill in a stope. With the materials used in the experiments in which the - 51 micron component of the tailings had been dis- carded, an optimum mix was found to contain 4:1 tailings/slag ratio and an overall pyrr hotite concentration of 8% (all proportion by weight). Approximately 34 days after drain- age to 15% moisture in natural air flow condit- ions, an unconfined compressive strength of 1.862 MPa was attained. A subsequent experi- ment was conducted with a sample of optimum mix in a pipe one metre long in forced air flow conditions. At a superficial velocity of 3.Om per hour the mix required 155 hours to harden to 1.862 MPa after drainage to 15% w/w moisture content. The pressure drop bet- ween the top and bottom of the mix in the pipe remained constant at 9 KPa/metre length. This result suggests that forced air flow conditions will increase the rate of hardening. No dangerous effluents were detected in the course of the experiments which could affect mine equipment or personnel.

Management of respirable dust on longwall face remains a challenging issue for mine operators, particularly for the new generation of thick seam longwalls. A fundamental understanding of the airflow behaviour around the shearer is critical for dealing with the dust control issue on longwall faces. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling techniques have been used in this study to conduct a detailed investigation of the air and respirable dust flow patterns around the longwall shearer. Three CFD models have been developed to represent different longwall cutting heights. The results of these modelling studies tallied well with field measured airflow data from different mines. The validated thick seam longwall face model was then used for detailed parametric studies to simulate the effect of various parameters and dust control concepts. The dust control options investigated include various spray configurations, shearer clearer, modified cutting sequences and shearer scrubbers of various capacities to minimise the respirable dust migration towards the walkway area of the longwall face. This paper presents a summary of the results of these CFD modelling investigations.
